"Uranium may be leached to some extent in situ from the Blind River conglomerate uranium ores by using the products of bacterial activity from the bacterium Thio-bacillus ferrooxidans his paper describes some of the laboratory techniques used to investigate the characteristics of the bacteria, and to utilize their properties in uranium leaching. The application of some of the laboratory results underground at the Milliken mine of Rio Algom Mines Limited are de-scribed, along with the method of uranium recovery from the mine waters."

"Roof bolts are subjected to axial stresses, shear stresses, or both. Axial and shear stresses were compared between roof bolts machined with two and three slots. Shear stresses perpendicular to and at an angle to the shear planes were evaluated by analyzing a three-slot instrumented roof bolt, performing laboratory tests on two- and three-slot roof bolts, and conducting in-situ test analyses. Threeslot bolts appear to provide a complete bending strain profile, requiring no prior knowledge of the estimated shear-plane orientation. Minimum displacements occur in roof bolts installed perpendicular to rather than at an angle to the shear planes.RÉSUMÉ Les boulons d’ancrage dans le toit d’une mine sont sujets à des contraintes axiales, des contraintes de cisaillement ou les deux. On a comparé les contraintes axiales et de cisaillement de boulons d’ancrage usinés avec deux ou trois fentes. Les contraintes de cisaillement perpendiculaires et à angle aux plans de cisaillement ont été évaluées en analysant un boulon d’ancrage de toit à trois fentes, en effectuant des essais en laboratoire sur des boulons d’ancrage de toit à deux et à trois fentes et en effectuant des analyses de tests in situ. "The Cumberland Basin of Nova Scotia has long been considered a structural basin by virtue of the elliptical outcrop and inward dip pattern of the Pennsylvanian outcrops. Recent published and unpublished data indicate that subsidence began in the late Devonian, perhaps resulting from a graben or rift. The Mississippian sediments which filled the growing depression were continental, lacustrine and marine with evaporites. The cessation of the riftforming processes is recorded by the alluvial swamp-type sediments of the Pennsylvanian which filled the depression. In excess of 25,000 feet of Carboniferous rocks are believed to be present in the deepest part of the Basin. Starting with the rift hypothesis, we can speculate on the kinds of sediments, their location and the structural features present beneath the Pennsylvanian surface. Using surface exposures and a limited amount of subsurface data, we theorize that (1) the Mississippian evaporites acted as glide zones which effectively divided the Basin into two horizontal structural layers. The rocks above the evaporites, responding to Appalachian stresses, formed the long diapiric folds with cores of overthickened evaporites. Below the evaporites the structures are related to movements of the rift floor, compaction closures and structures formed by differential horizontal movements of the rift walls. (2) The rift, in its deeper parts, will have more and a greater variety of marine rocks than the outcrops indicate. Should the rift hypothesis be correct, the possibility of finding hydrocarbons is enhanced."

"Tensile strength of rock samples is measured by direct and indirect tensile tests in accordance with standard guidelines. Due to the difficulties in performing direct tensile test, the indirect tensile (Brazilian) test is conventionally carried out to obtain the ultimate tensile strength. A limited number of studies have been conducted to investigate the role of sample size (length to diameter ratio = L/D) in the stress distribution of the Brazilian test using numerical and analytical methods. These investigations showed that the tensile stress distribution along the loading diameter is not uniform. They also indicated that the difference between the tensile stress at the middle part and at the sides of the sample with higher L/D ratio is greater than that in the other samples.The objective of this study is to show the effect of tensile stress distribution on the fracture surface created by the Brazilian test from a morphological point of view on the samples with different L/D ratio. Hence, a series of fracture surfaces created using the Brazilian tests on the rock samples with L/D of 0.5, 0.75, 1, 1.25 and 1.5 were investigated.In this study, all fracture surfaces were scanned by a 3D laser profilommeter. A number of roughness profiles parallel and perpendicular to loading axis have been selected from the samples with different L/D ratio and spacing of 1 mm. The results show that the roughness of the profiles perpendicular to the loading axis increases with an increase of L/D ratio, while the roughness of the profiles parallel to the loading axis decreases. Furthermore, some roughness profiles parallel to the loading axis were chosen and divided into three segments. The results revealed that the segment in adjacent to the upper loading platen possesses higher roughness than the other segments."

"In 1991, the Canadian Council of Ministers for the Environment (CCME) charged its Waste Management Task Group with developing a nationally coordinated strategy to measure, monitor, and achieve the objective of decreasing the generation of waste (solid and hazardous) by50% from 1988 levels by the year 2000.With the encouragement of the CCME, which viewed hazardous waste as largely an industry problem, a committee, the “Industry Action Group”, representing eleven industry trade associations with a strong interest and involvement in hazardous waste was recruited.The Municipality of Markham, Ontario was also recruited (Appendix 1)."

Regeneration of hydrochloric acid steel pickle liquors has traditionally been accomplished by pyrohydrolysis. However, a number of factors have recently conspired to reduce the attractiveness of this approach. Moreover, the process is not amenable to small-scale operations. On the other hand, the standard technique for regeneration of sulfuric acid pickle liquors, which is the low-temperature crystallization of ferrous sulfate is applicable to any size operation. A similar technique has recently been developed to regenerate hydrochloric acid. Sulfuric acid is added to the ferrous chloride-bearing spent HCl pickle liquor. The temperature is then reduced to below 0°C, resulting in the crystallization of ferrous sulfate heptahydrate and liberation of free hydrochloric acid. Depending upon the crystallization temperature, variable concentrations of sulfate are left in the regenerated acid. Although this residual sulfate has an impact on the pickling characteristics of the regenerated acid, tests have shown that by adjusting the conditions, pickling rates will be at least equal to those using pure HCI, and an acceptable surface finish will be produced.

A DIGHEM survey was flown in the Belford-Montcalm Township area of Ontario in November 1975. This 600-linemile survey resulted in the detection of 134 EM anomalies. The Montcalm Township copper-nickel discovery yielded a single-line anomaly having a conductance of 154 mhos. This anomaly was highly visible because (a) it had the highest conductance in the survey area, (b) it correlated with a 175-gamma thumbprint-shaped magnetic anomaly and (c) it was isolated from long conductive bands. The deposit is a copper-nickel pyrrhotite body which occurs in gabbro and strikes north-south, parallel to the flight lines. The DIGHEM survey was flown north-south, because the exploration program was primarily concerned with locating copper-zinc sulphides in the east-west-striking felsic volcanics. The flight line passed close to the deposit and yielded a 9-ppm anomaly on the chart record. The computer analysis showed that a deposit of exceptionally high conductance (154 mhos) caused the relatively weak (9 ppm) anomaly. The ground follow-up program of magnetics and EM led quickly to the discovery drill hole, which penetrated the orebody in September 1976. Subsequent geophysical surveys consisted of horizontal-loop EM, pulse EM, magnetic and induced polarization surveys over an area of about 8 claims. In addition, a detailed DIGHEM" airborne survey was flown at a line spacing of 100 m to evaluate the entire property of 620 claims. This detailed survey yielded EM conductor maps and contour maps of resistivity, magnetics and enhanced magnetics.

A SHORTAGE of cement in the Prairie Provinces, together with an aggressive policy on the part of the Saskatchewan Government in bringing new industries to the province, combined to create a favourable set of conditions for the establishment of Saskatchewan's first cement plant on the outskirts of Regina. Built by Saskatchewan Cement Corporation Limited, this single-kiln plant, tl1e latest addition to cement producers on the Prairies, began operations in the Fall of 1956. Location of the plant followed the trend of building cement manufacturing facilities in market areas rather than at raw material sources. In 1957, all assets of the Corporation were taken over by Inland Cement Company Limited and the plant and quarry now operate as Saskatchewan Cement Company, an Inland division. The Regina plant's production makes up approximately eleven per cent of the productive capacity of all plants in the Prairie Provinces. At present, two types of cement are manufactured -normal portland and sulphate resisting.

"The Preston East Dome gold mine is in the southeastern part of Porcupine district, Ontario, 5 miles southeast of Timmins, and immediately south of the property of Dome Mines, Limited.The claims now owned by this Company were originally staked in 1909. After the property had remained dormant for many years, the present Company was organized in 1936 to resume development operations. Two shafts had been sunk: at the time of the early work on the claims, but lateral work from these failed to reach the ore deposits. A successful diamond drilling campaign undertaken under the direction of D. G. H. Wright, however, was followed by the sinking of a five-compartment shaft arid the erection of a mill. From the start of operations to the end of 1944, 1,292,000 tons of ore averaging $11.60 in gold a ton have been mined.An outstanding feature in this mine is the occurrence of the major gold deposits in quartz porphyry intrusives, though minor deposits are also found in the adjacent Keewatin volcanics. Most of the ore occurs in fractures, but the filling was accompanied by varying degrees of replacement of schistose wall-rocks. The ore deposits may be classified as:"

Higher prices for natural gas or oil have motivated the copper industry to reexamine the modes of oxygen and oxy-fuel burner usage at operating plants. With rising energy costs and the growing importance of environmental protection, burner usage and burner operations have become the focus of several investigations and optimization efforts. One possible approach to lower energy usage is through combustion using tonnage oxygen. When such oxygen is used, the flame temperature increases and operational efficiency is improved. As well, with the correct technology, due to the presence of lower levels of harmful substances such as NOx in the off gas, there is improved environmental performance. As regards copper production, furnaces are employed for both concentrate smelting or for melting and casting operations. The use of tonnage oxygen in concentrate burners for smelting provides for a higher thermal efficiency. For furnaces employed for melting, air-operated burners may in fact have an initial advantage because a long radiant flame is typically generated, thus providing for a higher degree of heat transmission. This paper describes the new experimental burner chamber of Messer Austria GmbH which provides for testing of the combustion of natural gas with oxygen or oxygen-enriched air and the use of special water cooling ducts that simulates a metal charge during melting, The operational effectiveness of the burner is determined from temperature and off-gas analysis data. "This paper presents the result of the research done on the effect of temperature on the dilatancy of rocks from the Bushveld Igneous Complex (BIC), where the South African Platinum mines are located. The BIC has higher virgin rock temperature (VRT) than the gold mines of the ‘Witwatersrand Basin Complex’. If the platinum mines advance to ultra-deep levels as the gold mines, since the Merensky Reef has been reported to extend beyond 5km, then the virgin rock temperature at 5 km below surface would be approximately 140oC. Hence, there is a need for the investigation of rock behaviour at high temperatures. Five different rock types (norite, leuconorite, mottled anorthosite, pyroxenite and chromitite) were tested in a 2600 kN servo-controlled multi-purpose triaxial testing machine. The tests were done at a constant strain rate of 5 x 10-1 S-1 and a confining pressure of 10 MPa within temperature range of 20 °C (ambient temperature) to 140 °C. The results show a general strength reduction and increasing dilation angles with increasing temperatures. The results also demonstrate that dilation angle is close to the internal friction angle at lower temperatures; however, they are greater at higher temperatures.INTRODUCTIONMany challenges are faced with increasing depth of mining in underground mines. The most obvious are heat, in-situ stresses and those associated with logistics. Issues related to underground heat have mainly focused on the side effect of heat on workers' health, increasing production costs as a result of higher cost of ventilation. The effect of increasing temperature with increasing depth on the behavior of rock has not been given much consideration. Generally, gold mines in South Africa are deeper than the platinum mines but the latter have higher temperature gradient, which makes the platinum mines to be warmer at similar mining depths. Although the study of the effect temperature on the behaviour of rock can be beneficial to both gold and platinum mines, the focus of the research is limited to the platinum mines because of their higher temperature gradient. Donoghue (2004) stated that the virgin rock temperatures (VRT) and air temperatures increase with depth, due to the geothermal gradient and auto-compression, that is, compression of air by its own weight."

Prior to 2006, the filtration unit for leached sludge treatment (filter press) permitted the filtration, washing and drying of cake to 17% (w/w) moisture. That year saw moisture content abruptly increase to 20% (w/w), drastically changing the rheological properties of the cake. The cake became sticky and agglomerated. This led to major disruptions of operations and plant capacity (cake release and cake conveyor problems, complicating the subsequent steps of the process). The conditions for the filtration, washing and drying, were simulated to ease cake unloading without aggravating dust emissions (moisture about 17% (w/w)). All of the laboratory tests yielded a moisture content above 17% (w/w). Therefore, we concluded that the moisture problems were not due to a recipe change in primary material, but to an operational problem in the filter press. Through the laboratory results, the filter press operating conditions (washing ratio, drying pressure and drying time) were optimized to enable a reduction in cake moisture to 17% (w/w).

"The Quesnel Trough is underlain by a thick sequence of mainly Upper Triassic and Lower Jurassic volcanic-clastic and sedimentary rocks that lie between the highly deformed Proterozoic and Paleozoic rocks in the Omineca Geanticline to the east and the Upper Paleozoic Cache Creek Group in the Pinchi Geanticline to the west. Broad areas of the Trough between Kamloops and Williams Lake are covered by Eocene volcanics and sediments and by Miocene-Pliocene plateau lava. Granitic intrusions were apparently mainly confined to two major episodes; one about 200 m.y. ago (coeval with the Guichon batholith) and one about 100 m.y. ago. In addition, the region includes small granitic and syenitic intrusions, some porphyritic, that may be all or partly still younger. Exposures in the region are generally small and scattered, obscured by widespread, not necessarily thick glacial deposits. This, together with the extensive Tertiary cover, makes prospecting difficult. The part of the Quesnel Trough discussed here is the direct northwest-ward extension of the copper-rich Kamloops-Merritt-Princeton region. It contains the Boss Mountain molybdenum mine, related to a breccia zone induced in a batholith of the oldest group by a younger intrusion, and the Cariboo Bell copper deposit in Lower Jurassic volcanic-elastic rocks and syenitic intrusions. The Gibraltar deposit, in a 200-m.y. intrusion, is within the Pinchi Geanticline close to the margin of the Trough. Molybdenum prospects are mainly restricted within or near the 100-m.y. granitic rocks. Copper prospects, on the other hand, are most prominent in the volcanic-elastic rocks and in the 200-m.y.-old granitic rocks, although they can also be spatially related to younger intrusions. Copper thus has a wide potential distribution.The writers believe that the region is deserving of careful and comprehensive exploration by directly applying the knowledge and techniques developed in the important producing areas to the south. All of the major pre-Tertiary geological elements seem to have potential for mineral deposits; none should be ignored. A thorough knowledge of the thickness and distribution of the Tertiary rocks and the development of geophysical methods to ""see through"" them is of particular importance."

The prediction of machine utilization time and determining machine performance plays an important role in scheduling and planning tunnel excavation and data base created serve a major role in further applications. In this study, the construction methods of two twin tunnels situated between Basak Konutlari station and Istoc station are summarized. Geology in the study area is composed of fill and weak rock, respectively starting from the surface. The tunnels of 5.6 km in length were excavated with two different earth pressure balance machines (EPBM). Excavation diameters of the EPBMs were 6.564 m. The performance of the machines are analyzed and compared in order to accumulate data for further applications in similar ground conditions in Istanbul. The distance between two twin tunnels is 14 m from center to center and the EPBM in the one tube was almost about 100 m behind the other tube. Segmental lining with 1.4 m of length and 30 centimeters of thickness were used as final support. The overall performances of the two Lovat TBMs are found to be respectively as; the best daily advance rates 30.8 m/day and 30.8 m/day, the best weakly advance rates 115.0 m/day and 153.9 m/day, the best monthly advance rates 388.7 m/day and 400.5 m/day. Total waiting and maintenance times were 25.2 and 16.7 %, respectively.

THE Britannia Mining & Smelting Company, Limited, have been operating their property at Britannia Beach, B.C., continuously for nearly forty years and have mined over 33,000,000 tons of ore from orebodies within a belt of highly sheared rocks, five miles long by 2,000 feet wide. The property is in the Coast Range mountains, about twenty miles due north of Vancouver. The mountains rise abruptly from sea level to elevations of 4, 500 feet within a horizontal distance of 7,000 feet. The topography has enabled the orebodies to be developed by adit tunnels. The active mining levels are connected to the adits by incline and vertical service shafts. The main service adits are the 2200, 2700, and 4100 levels (see Figure 1). The mine surface shops, three bunk-houses, and over one hundred dwellings form the townsite camp at the portal of the 2200 level adit. A small camp of one bunk-house and a few dwellings is situated at the 2700 level portal. The beach surface shops and camp, adjacent to the 4100 level adit, service the mill, foundry, and other beach installations as well as the mining from the 4100 level. The ore mined from the various orebodies is delivered to the 4100 main haulage level through a system of rock raises and intermediate tramming levels and is hauled on the 4100 level to the mill.

"The Gregg River project is located 40 kilometres southwest of Hinton, Alberta, adjacent to and east of Jasper National Park. This metallurgical coal mine has been developed as a joint venture between Gregg River Coal Ltd. (a subsidiary company of Mana/ta Coal Ltd.) and seven Japanese companies. This 200-million dollar project consists of a conventional truckshovel open-pit operation and a coal preparation plant rated at 2.14 million tonnes of clean coal per year. Mining operations started in October 1982 with plant start-up following in April 1983. Introduction This paper is an overview and update of the Gregg River project, a metallurgical coal mine being developed as a joint venture between Gregg River Coal Ltd. (a subsidiary of Manalta Coal Ltd.) and seven Japanese companies. The Gregg River Coal leases cover 3440 hectares and are located 40 kilometres south of Hinton, Alberta, adjacent to and north of Cardinal River Coal Mine (Fig. 1). This 200-million dollar project consists of a conventional truck-shovel operation and a coal preparation plant rated at 2.14 million tonnes of clean coal per year. A total of 31.5 million tonnes of clean metallurgical coal will be sold to the Japanese over a fifteen-year term. At present, mining operations are ahead of schedule and the plant started up on schedule in April 1983. Access and Climate An all-weather road, Highway 40, connects the minesite with Hinton (the nearest commercial centre) and a Canadian National Railway (C.N.R.) spur line connects the minesite with the C.N.R. main line in Edson. Hinton is accessible by road chartered airline and rail. ' ~h~ rug~ed and varied topography in the area creates large vanations m temperature and precipitation over short distances. The region is characterized by precipitation throughout the year long cold winters and short cool summers. The mean temperatur~ of the area range from a low of -14°C in January, the coldest month, to a high of 12°C in July, the warmest month. Long-term precipitation data indicates a mean yearly precipitation of 870 mm of which 620Jo occurs during the summer months."

Since closure in 1968, the Wedge Mine, situated adjacent to the Nepisiguit River in New Brunswick, has been flooding with acidic water containing toxic levels of heavy metals. Cominco Ltd. has undertaken a series of pollution control measures to mitigate the threat posed to the river quality. Included has been a successful treatment campaign in 1976 which discharged in excess of 30 million gallons of high-quality effluent from the accumulated volume of mine water. The sources of contamination have been identified as actively leaching waste dumps. A comprehensive program of permanent corrective measures has been prepared which will culminate in mine backfilling. Once completed, the unacceptable burden of water treatment in perpetuity at a non-producing property will be removed.

The Mattagami mining district encompasses a favour-?able belt of folded Keewatin-type rocks, with intercalated sediments and intrusives of late Keewatin age. This environment has been subjected to periods of basic and acidic intrusion. The orebodies lie within the fold structure and are associated with faulting and shearing of considerable magnitude. The No. 1 orebody contains 60 to 70 per cent massive sulphides. The minerals, in their order of abundance, are generally: pyrite, sphalerite, pyrrhotite, magnetite and chalcopyrite. It is evident that the broad geological structure of the district is amenable to ore deposition. There are two ? prominent linear expressions which comprise this broad structure. Both strike directions lie at the edge of, or are related to, a complex gabbro-anorthosite-peridotite zone. The fact that eleven of the ore zones discovered to date coincide with the broad structure indicates its over-all importance. It is estimated that the production from Mattagami Lake Mines will be in the range of 600 to 700 tons of zinc concentrate and 70 tons of copper concentrate per day.

Some industrially relevant applications for pyrite nano/micro-particles have been proposed in the literature, such as the catalysis of chalcopyrite leaching, the removal of As(III), As(V) and Cr(VI) from solution, as photovoltaic devices, and others. Even though pyrite can be recovered from solution by flotation, for some applications it may be beneficial to provide pyrite with magnetic properties. In this work, a methodology to synthesize magnetic shell/core composites made of pyrite as the shell and either natural or synthetic magnetite as the core is presented. The size of the magnetic composite may range from tenths to hundreds of microns. The synthesis is basically made by stoichiometrically mixing iron nano/micro-particles with sulfur microparticles with magnetite particles, and bringing the mixture in an oxygen free atmosphere from 200 to 300 °C for 4 h. The composites were characterized by optical microscopy, Scanning Electron Microscopy and X-Ray diffraction.
