High stress conditions in underground mines push the performance envelope of support systems to their limit. In weak rock masses these conditions lead to large deformation and breakdown of the rock material, while stress release events in hard rock mines can lead to sudden and usually violent rock and support failure. In typical support systems, a combination of different reinforcement and support mechanisms provide the required convergence control and retainment. These systems usually involve a multi-pass support installation. The advantages of a single pass support system are investigated and several bolting combinations are compared. Criteria for design are reviewed and new criteria are proposed to include cost and effectiveness in commonly used engineering approaches. Field observation and testing is used to illustrate the difference between the proposed approach and more conventional systems.

"Hydraulic fracture (HF) growth through naturally fractured rocks challenges the development of accurate predictive HF models. The authors present laboratory experiments differentiating behaviours associated with orthogonal and oblique intersections between HFs and natural fractures (NFs). HFs were created in sandstone and crystalline (gabbro) rock specimens, impinging orthogonally or obliquely on an unbonded machined frictional interface. Ultrasound monitoring was used to observe the rate of propagation through the interface. A contrast was observed between direct and offset crossing for orthogonal and oblique intersection, respectively. The stresses required to promote crossing depended on the intersection angle between HFs and NFs.RÉSUMÉ La propagation des fractures hydrauliques (FH) dans les roches naturellement fracturées pose un défi pour le développement de modèles prédictifs. Nous présentons des essais en laboratoire qui différencient les comportements associés aux intersections orthogonales et obliques entre les FH et les fractures naturelles. Des FH ont été créées dans des spécimens de grès et de roches cristallines (gabbro), heurtés de manière orthogonale ou oblique sur une interface machinée, non liée, de frottement. Un suivi par ultrasons a servi à observer le taux de propagation à travers l’interface. Un contraste a été observé entre un croisement direct et un croisement indirect des intersections respectivement orthogonales et obliques. The expansion project in Naoshima smelter and refinery to meet enhancing recycling business of E-scrap was successfully completed in 2016 to have a capacity of 110,000 tpa of E-scrap treatment. Increasing treatment of E-scrap has raised the Ni content of copper anode to 4000 ppm on average, which is double the level of 10 years ago, and to 6000 ppm or more occasionally. The tank house has refined such copper anode to copper cathode with starter sheets. Since most Ni in Copper anode dissolves in copper electrolyte, the Ni content of the electrolyte has increased to 27 g/L and more. Ni accumulated in the electrolyte has increased power consumption during the electrolytic refining of copper, although cathode quality has been controlled satisfactory so far. In order to ensure sustainable operation while growing E- scrap business, the NiSO4 process has been expanded recently so as to recover Ni in the electrolyte more and the pressurized-leaching technology will be introduced to the slime leaching process so as to enhance the capacity of slime treatment and to improve Ni recovery in the near future. INTRODUCTION In recent years, the treatment amount of E-scrap at Naoshima smelter and refinery has increased according to the growth of its recycling business as shown in Figure 1, while impurities from E-scrap have concentrated in copper anode as well. Especially, Ni content in anode has been increasing remarkably since 2012, causing to raise Ni content in the electrolyte as shown in Figure 2. The increment of Ni content in copper anode and electrolyte has adversely affected the electrorefining process, slime leaching process, and NiSO4 crystallization process at the tank house. Such severe conditions provided opportunities to redesign the tank house to establish a robust process to which more Ni is acceptable.

This work presents visible-near infrared (VIS-NIR) spectroscopy measurements, and signal analytical techniques to characterize minerals and relevant pyrometallurgical process variables for the copper extractive industry. Data signal processing techniques such as baseline correction and numerical analysis are used to estimate the continuous and discontinuous spectral components. Such spectral components are used to estimate the process temperature, and patterns such as the integrated radiation. Also, metal combustion emissivity calculation are depicted. Our findings suggest that VIS-NIR spectroscopy may be a suitable technique to assess the process condition state, appearing as an interesting sensing alternative. INTRODUCTION Although the flash smelting process is one key stage in the copper extractive industry, representing about 40% of copper matte production worldwide (Cantallopts, 2017), few attention is dedicated to develop sensing solutions to assess process variables, such as mineralogical composition and temperature, in the feeding and bleeding stages, compared to the steel industry (Strakowski, et al., 2014). In this process and other industries, e.g. the thermoelectric power generation one, combustion and particularly the generated flame are the production chain’s heart. Since the flame is a highly radiative emitting process where chemical and physical transformations take place, many works had been dedicated to characterize the combustion state by sensing its radiation using optical and photonic technologies (Ballester & García-Armingol, 2010). In this context, this work aims to contribute with visible-near infrared (VIS-NIR) spectroscopy and pyrometry techniques to retrieve relevant information from a laboratory scale flash smelting process. On the other hand, since photonic instrumentation allow us to perform contactless measurements of emitted, absorbed, transmitted or scattered radiation, it appears as a suitable technique for sensing process properties in harsh environments, e.g. high temperature processes. One of these techniques is the Visible- Near Infrared (VIS-NIR) spectroscopy, which provides information about the spectral radiation intensity distribution, in this work, the emitted flame’s radiation. It is well known in combustion research that the spectral emission from a flame is composed by a black body continuous radiation background, molecular emissions, elemental emissions and additive noise features (Arias et al., 2011). To make sense of such information signal processing techniques are needed, here we propose to analyse the continuous and discontinuous spectral components separately.

Sossego Mine was the first Vale SAG mill operation to process copper-gold ore. It is located in the state of Para, in the south-eastern Amazon region of Brazil. In the first six years of continuous operation, Vale investigated different alternatives for improving circuit performance by investigating operating conditions, mainly focusing on the SAG mill. Today, after a steady increase over five years the annual production rate seems to have stabilized. It is hoped this work will show how the SAG operating practice have been perfected with time and as new data are collected. Historical data of mill grind-outs and crash stops helped create operation curves depending on the ball charge volume and total charge volume. Also noted were impacts on throughput due to the effect of reducing liner weight and the ore type characteristics.

SHERRITT GORDON Mines Limited annually produce 300,-000 pounds of pure cobalt by processing a nickel-cobalt-copper-iron sulphide ore which is mined at Lynn Lake, Manitoba. The ore (containing 0.04 per cent Co) is •concentrated to give a concentrate containing l 1-12 per cent nickel, about 2.0 per cent .copper, and 0.25-0.35 per cent cobalt, which is treated at the Refinery in Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta. The concentrate is leached in an ammoniacal solution of ammonium sulphate using compressed air as the oxidant. After filtration the leach solution contains, besides nickel and cobalt, copper ammines, sulpharnates and salts of various thionic acids. The copper is removed by precipitation as sulphide and the sulphur compounds converted to ammonium sulphate by a combined oxidation and hydrolysis treatment. The purified solution •Containing about 45 gpl of nickel and 1 gpl of cobalt is treated with gaseous hydrogen under pressure at 350°F to precipitate metallic nickel powder, the precipitation 'being terminated when the nickel content of the solution is about 0.8-1 gpl. "The Marvast monazite deposit is located 35 kilometres south - southwest of Marvast in Yazd province of Iran. A representative sample weighing approximately 10 tons was prepared to study the amenability of the ore to physical beneficiation. The size fraction of +1000 µm was removed due to low monazite content and the –1000 µm size fraction was concentrated by the gravity-classification-magnetic methods. According to the results of sample characterization, the representative sample contains 220 ppm REO that is contained in monazite. It was concentrated to 41.5% REO by the above mentioned methods. The recovery of REO in the monazite concentrate was 41.5%.INTRODUCTIONRare earth elements are critical metals in many countries (Gupta, 2005; UK Geological Survey, 2011). Increasing application of these metals in hi-tech industries and price fluctuation caused by Chinese production policy has led other countries to focus on their local resources (UK Geological Survey, 2011). In this case, Iran is not an exception.REE mineralization in Iran is mainly located in the central zone. Regarding the exploration data, these deposits are divided into two categories. The first group is iron ore deposits in which the REE are carried by phosphate minerals. The other group is placer deposits where monazite is the major mineral of the deposit. The Marvast placer deposit is one of these types of deposit (Daliran, 1990; Mokhtari, 2008; Torab, &Lehmann, 2007; Alipour, 2014)."

"While the uniaxial compressive strength of rock has been extensively investigated, the relation between the saturation and natural compressive strength is relatively unexplored. This paper studies on 1865 statistical data of Chongqing Rail Transit Line 1 and Line 6, which located in the Middle Jurassic of Shaximiao formation. The research focuses on the relation between the saturation and natural compressive strength. The statistical data are categorized and quantified in order to ascertain the softening properties of sandstone and sandy mudstone. The findings suggest that the saturation compressive strength is significant effected by its natural compressive strength, and an empirical formula is introduced to explain the relation. These findings have implications for researchers and engineer who concerned with Chongqing rail transit construction.INTRODUCTIONIn the engineering construction and surrounding rock classification, the uniaxial compressive strength index (Ministry of Water Conservancy, 1995; Ministry of Railways, 1999) is one of the essential parameters of rock mass. Usually, there are two types of the uniaxial compressive strength index, natural and saturation compressive strength, and the ratio of them is the softening coefficient. Most of the previous studies on rock strength had focused on the influence factors (Liu et al., 2008; Liu et al., 1998; Liu et al., 2013; Wang, 2013; Zhang et al., 2008; Zhang et al., 2010; Zeng & Lin, 2003) with experiment and in-situ tests. But few publications that reports a long and formal research project on the relationship between natural and saturation compressive strength. In order to figure out this issue, this study investigated the distribution of Solidity Classification of Rock Mass and softening coefficient based on the statistical data of Chongqing Rail Transit Line 1 and Line 6. MR. T. L. McCALL: Planning ahead in coal-mining is essential, but the question may be raised, just how far ahead can we plan. You can overdo it: chat is, you can get in a rut. Never let planning get a hold on you to chat extent. You must be prepared to deal intelligently with any new conditions that arise, and to apply new discoveries. It may become necessary to abandon ? .your plan, make the best you can of the ground you have developed, and start again, with a new plan. So far as the submarine workings of the Dominion Steel and Coal Company are concerned, we cannot know definitely what lies ahead of us under the sea: we must ?base our tentative plans on assumptions, and, as we meet changing conditions, we must change our plans. In the case of inland mines it is possible to bore in advance, and consequently it is generally possible to set out your plans in advance, block out a section of the mine, and develop to obtain a uniform product for a whole year, or perhaps even longer. MR. J. B. MORROW: While planning in coal mining, we must bear in mind chat the consumer also is planning ahead. Some people will tell you that, in ten years time, the demand is going to be all for pulverized co al; others believe that the field for such fuel is limited. Needless to state, planning for a pulverized-coal market is quite a different matter to planning for a general grade, ore stoker, market. In planning, therefore, our endeavour must be to keep a jump ahead of the work being undertaken by the anthracite producers. This year, they are spending about two million dollars-money contributed, not by the Government, but by the industry itself-in the study and promotion of new and improved ways of burning anthracite. For example, they are perfecting small hot-water heaters, and one they have brought out weighs only about ten pounds. I feel that research of this type must be regarded as an essential part of planning in coal mining. We, in the soft-coal industry, are also planning types of more efficient burning equipment and doing other investigational work.

"At Craigmont Mines Limited, Merritt, B.C., tests were begun in March, 1965 to evaluate the use of shotcrete as a method of ground support m development headings; previously, ail drifts had. required support, which was accomplished mainly by timber and occasionally by the use of rockbolts. The tests demonstrated conclusively the effectiveness of shotcrete for supporting Craigmont's ground. Gradually, the use of timber for ground support was virtually eliminated in favour of shotcrete. This paper describes the equipment used, the operation of the equipment, pertinent cast data and opera ting details. Also discussed are other uses developed for the shot-creting equipment, the use of reinforcing bar rockbolts, and a method used at Craigmont for lining long vertical ore passes with steel plate and concrete as part of the raising cycle."

Recovery of vanadium from LD (Linz-Donawits) converter slag was evaluated by means of microbial leaching. Vanadium leaching was performed in two stages. In the first stage, the bacteria were grown in a culture medium and in the second stage; vanadium containing slag was added to the metabolites produced by bacteria. Bioleaching was performed using heterotrophic bacteria Pseudomonas Putída. Control tests without bacteria inoculation were also performed and the results were compared with bioleaching outcomes. Optimal conditions for the bioleaching of vanadium containing slag were determined.

With the present-day trend of rising labour costs and a lowering of production efficiency of workmen, it has become imperative that every effort be made to use manpower to the greatest advantage and to mechanize mining as much as possible. During the past few years this trend has gained much prominence in the Porcupine camp. In view of this, the executive of the Porcupine Branch considered that the Mechanical Movement of Muck would be a very timely subject for a Symposium. Accordingly a Committee was formed, with A. K. Douglass, Mine Superintendent for Delnite Mines, Ltd., as Chairman, and the Symposium was held in the Auditorium of the McIntyre Community Building, Schumacher, on March 25th last. Papers dealing with shovel loader and mechanical scraper operation at six of the larger mines of the camp were presented and discussed, and a tabulation was prepared giving data on the machines in operation at a total of eleven mines. The papers and tabulation, reproduced below, will doubtless be of considerable interest to operators of mines in all parts of Canada.

"A model was developed to use near-infrared (NIR) analysis of pulverized ore samples to estimate the recoverable gold content for ores from the Barrick Cortez Hills underground mine. Current routing practices use a ratio of the cyanide soluble gold content and fire assayed gold (CN/FA) to classify ores as oxide or refractory. Prediction accuracy of the NIR model was equivalent to the CN/FA ratio. Prediction accuracy was improved by combining the CN/FA ratio and the NIR spectra. Bootstrap validation estimates the root-mean-square error to be 9.92% with an estimated r-squared value of 0.893. This model will allow more accurate estimates of the variability in recoverable gold content throughout this mine. These data will aid in building an improved geo-metallurgical model or in making better informed routing decisions during the production cycle.INTRODUCTION The contained gold of an ore available for cyanidation is often related to subtle variations in the mineralogy. It is difficult and expensive to collect enough mineralogical information in order to predict how the variable mineralogy will impact the metallurgical results and project economics throughout the life of the mine or mill. Near-infrared spectroscopy may be an effective tool to rapidly and inexpensively collect discrete, quantitative mineralogical data for minerals that contain transition metal oxides, metal sulfides with semi-conduction properties, rare earth metals, and some chemical groups having di-pole covalent bonds such as carbonates, sulfates, and various types of clays (Hunt, 1977). Near-infrared spectroscopy can be a powerful tool for geo-metallurgical characterization of deposits where the presence of these minerals has direct or indirect relationships to metallurgical results such as grindability, regent consumption, or recovery. Near infrared spectroscopy is a rapid analysis that measures the intensity of reflected light in the near-infrared spectrum. The ranges for the ASD-Panalytical units used in this study extend through the visible spectrum and into part of the UV spectrum, reporting reflection by wavelength from between 350 nm to 2500 nm. Absorption peaks visible in this range are a result of interactions with outer valence elections or chemical bonds. The location and intensity of the peaks vary depending on the chemical composition and crystal structure of a solid indicating the presence and abundance certain minerals (Hunt, 1977; Clark, 1984)."

"The magnesite flotation operation of Magnesita Refractories, in Brumado – Brazil, has four parallel ball mills working in closed circuit with hydrocyclones to grind the ore for the reverse flotation of silicates in mechanical cells. The modification proposed here opens the circuit for three of the ball mills so that their products are collected together to feed a high frequency screen. The oversize of the screen feeds the fourth ball mill in closed circuit for secondary comminution. The product reports to dewatering and flotation. The undersize undergoes desliming and subsequent flotation operation. According to pilot tests performed, the modification on the magnesite flotation operation will promote a 20% increase in the productivity, 8.5% increase in mass recovery and a 26% reduction in water consumption. The gains are due to the fact that the silicates in the feed are concentrated in the smaller particles (<100µm) with over grinding in the existing closed comminution circuit, making it impossible to take advantage of this natural selectivity. The combination of open circuit, more selective milling, and the high frequency screen, ensures high efficiency particle size classification. This renders the process more effective, both to the screen undersize with its high contents of silicates and fines, and to the screen oversize, which is almost without fines and has a higher magnesite grade. This situation allows for the setting of specific parameters for the flotation of both the primary milling undersize and the secondary milling product.INTRODUCTIONMagnesita Refractories, with its operations site in Brumado, is the largest producer of high purity dead burned magnesia (DBM) in Latin America. The magnesite ore is extracted from an open pit mine, named Pomba, after which it is crushed and handpicked. Due to the presence of disseminated silicate the ore has to be ground and concentrated by means of reverse flotation, before feeding the high temperature kilns for sintering and conversion to DBM.The magnesite flotation unit has an impact crusher to reduce the size of the feeding ore, which is transported to the mills by conveyor belts. The milling operation is composed of four ball mills in closed circuit with hydrocyclones. The closed circuit generates a high circulating load with excess fines, which is detrimental to the selectivity of the desliming and flotation operations, reducing both mass andmetallurgical recovery.In the current scenario, the capacity of the flotation plant is insufficient to meet the demand of the DBM kilns, forcing the operation to work with high purity ores in order to attain the highest possible mass recovery in the concentration process. This is not an ideal situation as it requires the mining site to work with higher stripping ratios.The objective of this work was to improve the magnesite flotation unity to increase its productivity. After a detailed analysis, the milling was identified as the limiting process, which made the authors to focus on this operation."

In mineral processing plants, cyclones typically perform the classification duty prior to the downstream recovery process. Particle size distribution of the cyclone overflow is an important parameter and can be viewed as the product of the comminution process. Too coarse of a product will likely have poorly liberated valuable minerals and make recovery difficult. Too fine of a product may represent a missed opportunity to increase plant throughput and/or also result in low recovery due to poor kinetics. “Near-line” particle size measurement instrumentation has been in place for several decades, its availability and low measurement frequency have typically been inadequate for reliable use in automatic control. CiDRA Minerals Processing has developed a novel and robust technology that provides a highly reliable and low maintenance system for “on-line” measurement of the particle size in the overflow of individual cyclones. The system is based around a wetted sensor design with no moving parts and provides a real-time trend of the desired target grind size parameter. The system does not require sampling and associated sample transfer piping that is prone to plugging, thus avoiding high maintenance requirements. Plant data and benefits realized from the latest installations of the CYCLONEtrac PST will be presented. INTRODUCTION Impact-based real-time hydrocyclone particle size measurement Acoustic impact-based particle size tracking is a unique method for measuring and controlling the particle size in cyclone overflow streams. The implementation of this technology is centered upon a sensor probe that is inserted into the overflow slurry stream via a two-inch (50 mm) hole in the overflow pipe (Figure 1). Particles within the slurry stream impact the surface of the probe generating travelling stress waves within the probe. A sensor converts these travelling stress waves into an electrical signal and proprietary signal processing techniques convert these signals into a particle size measurement that is output every four seconds. The sensor is constantly in contact with many particles in the slurry stream, thus obtaining information from orders of magnitude more particles than traditional sample-based technologies. The sensor has no impact on cyclone performance because it is located downstream of the hydrocyclone and the presence of an air core ensures there is no change in the back pressure seen by the hydrocyclone.

"In order to improve zinc plant productivity, areas of low efficiency were identified. As a result, solution purification was improved, additional dust precipitator capacity was made available and a new zinc casting plant was installed. The effects of these and other changes are discussed and the expenditure and benefits reviewed. HistoryThe operation of the Flin Flon metallurgical complex including an electrolytic zinc plant commenced in October 1930. The design of the zinc plant was based on that of the Commonwealth Mining and Smelting Company at Trail, British Columbia, the Anaconda Great Falls Montana Plant and the Electrolytic Zinc Company plant at Risdon, Tasmania.The plant began with a design capacity of 60 tons per day and currently produces 255 tons per day. Since plant start-up, approximately 3.5 million ton s of zinc metal have been produced, most of it exceeding special high-grade specifications.IntroductionThe facility incorporates the basic process steps of roasting, leaching, purification, electrowinning and casting. Figure I details the flowsheet. During the late 1970s, management recognized that in order for the zinc plant to continue operating, it was necessary to introduce cost-effective practices.Study groups, consisting of design engineers and operations personnel, were formed to investigate the details of plant revisions.The objectives were to improve productivity by reducing manual labour, reducing energy usage, increasing zinc recovery, increasing metal output and reducing costs.This paper details the changes made during the period 1979to 1986 and shows how these changes have affected the productivity and economics of the zinc plant operation."
