"The Pacific Nickel property lies 7 miles northwest of Hope and 100 miles east of Vancouver, in the Coast Mountains of southwestern British Columbia. Nickel-copper sulphides were discovered in ultrabasic rocks on this property in 1923 and the deposits were explored by Pacific Nickel Mines until 1937, then again between 1951 and 1954 by Pacific Nickel Mines and by Newmont Mining Corporation through its subsidiary,Canadian Ore DepositsWestern Nickel. The property was studied by C. E. Cairnes (1) in 1924, by W. E. Cockfield and J. F. Walker (2) in 1933, by H. C. Horwood (3), (4) in 1936 and 1937, and by the writer in 1951 and 1952. Except for a few thousand tons for trial shipments, the property has never been mined. Indicated ore reserves now total somewhat over one million tons averaging about 1.4 per cent nickel and 0.5 per cent copper, with lesser values in precious metals and cobalt.GEOLOGIC SETTINGThe nickeliferous ultrabasic rocks form part of the core of a 15-milewide block of Late Palæozoic metamorphic rocks and Mesozoic intrusives which extend north-south between the coast batholith of British Columbia and the Chelan batholith of Washington. Margins of this block are faulted in part against less metamorphosed volcanic and sedimentary rocks largely of Jurassic and Lower Cretaceous age (Geo/. Surv., Canada, Map 737 A, 1942). Serpentinites, suggestive of deep transgressive structure, occur within the block, and also at its east margin along faults which are southern extensions of the regional Yalakom-Fraser River fault zone. Some of the other mineral deposits in the Hope area appear to be spatially related to these major faults.The mineralization at Pacific Nickel occurs almost exclusively within a stock-like mass of ultra basic rocks which mingle with, and partly cut, a larger batholithic mass of genetically related diorites and norites of late Mesozoic age (Figure 1 ). The ultra basic mass consists essentially of fresh, medium-grained hornblendic pyroxenite with peridotitic cores and with a remarkable margin of pegmatitic hornblendite. The most hornblendic rocks appear to be chiefly products of reaction and replacement of the pyroxene and olivine rocks. The mineralization consists of disseminated and massive pyrrhotite, with subordinate pentlandite and chalcopyrite, amongst fresh olivine, bronzite, and, Jess commonly, augite and hornblende. Both the ultrabasics and mineralization are cut by small hornblenditic and dioritic dykes, and by veins and alteration zones."

"Le gisement Isle-Dieu est situé sur le flanc sud de l'anticlinal de Galinée. La stratigraphie locale comprend, de bas en haut, la rhyolite du Groupe du Lac Watson surmontée par le basalte du Groupe de Wabassee. Un horizon repère, siliceux et sulfure, d'origine sédimentaire, appelé ""Tuffite Clef', est présent au sommet du Groupe du Lac Watson et pend à 45° vers le sud.Le gisement Isle-Dieu est constitué par une lentille qui recoupe, en partie, la ""Tuffite Clef"". Elle est séparée en deux trorçons par un dyke de tonalite. Les données obtenues à partir des forages effectues à travers la rhyolite sous-jacente permettent de définir les zonations chimiques et pétrographiques de la cheminée d’altération.Ces transformation minéralogiques et chimiques sont caractérisées par un enrichissement en MgO, Fe2O3, MnO et un appauvrissement en CaO, SiO2 et Na2O. La zonation spatiale de ces altérations permet de mettre en évidence la géométrie et l'extension des conduits hydrothermaux. L'épaisseur maximale des sulfures massifs au sein de la lentille est en étroite relation avec l’importance des zones d'altération. Les patrons de variations chimiques dénotent une orientation préférentielle WNW des conduits hydrothermaux. Les parties les plus altérées et les plus déformées présentent localement de fortes variations positives en Zr, Nb, et terres-rares; ces concentrations sont vraisemblablement imputables a /' enrichissement résultant de la diminution du volume lors de l'altération.L'étude pétrographique montre que la porosité et la perméabilité du milieu ont joué un rôle important dans la circulation des fluides car les roches de la cheminée présentent des phénomènes de dévitrification, de bréchification et de microfracturation très prononces. La nature magnésienne de certaines chlorites et la perméabilité accrue du milieu semblent en accord avec le modelé propose par Roberts et Reardon, ( 1978 )"

This paper describes a collaboration between McGill University and Hatch Ltd. to expose undergraduate students to real-world industrial projects. As part of the final-year design course, the students receive a detailed lecture on Scale-Up of New Technologies', including seven case studies drawn from over fifty years of full-scale industrial projects. The students are taught the basic concepts of scale-up, including the limits of pure theory and the need for empiricism. Insights from real scale-up failures and successes are fictionalized as Projects A, B, C, etc. The students are then asked to identify the guiding principles that can be distilled from these case studies.

"This study presents the results of a set of sound level measurements carried out in three underground mines where auxiliary fans are used regularly. Sound levels as high as 100 dB(A) by the workings and 115 dB(A) by the fans were measured in these mines. These levels are quite high even for intermittent noise. Ventilation layouts and best practices used to overcome potential problems related to overexposure to fan noise in underground hard-rock mines are presented here. Factors such as fan type, rotational speed, and silencer-duct arrangements and their effects on noise attenuation are discussed. INTRODUCTION Auxiliary fans are used in hard-rock mines extensively. They are used to ventilate development headings, crusher rooms, conveyor transfer points, and underground shops. They are also used in developing long tunnels and ramps. Depending on the flow requirements and space restrictions, single or double stage axial fans with rigid or flexible ducts are used. Usually, they are high pressure (3.75 kPa) fans with flow rates ranging from 7.1 m3/s to 30 m3/s. The input power varies from 15 kW to 113 kW (Mutama, 2004; O’Connor, 2008). Typically, a 113 kW fan can produce sound levels as high a 113 dB(A) (Howes, 2005). Silencers are often omitted for cost reduction purposes or when used, they are not well maintained. Furthermore, silencers provide limited attenuation depending on their length and type. Typically, the sound attenuation ranges from 10 dB(A) for a 1 × D silencer to 14 dB(A) for a 2 × D silencer, where D is the fan diameter. In a mine, the silencer is subject to wear and tear, especially when the silencer is used in harsh environments. The interior lining can get clogged and the acoustic fill can get covered by dust and diesel soot, thus reducing the silencer performance. Periodic cleaning of the interior casing can increase the attenuation capacity of a silencer by 6 to 9 dB(A) (Dabson & Acuña, 2017). However, this requires a special silencer design in which the inner cartridge can be removed, the sound absorbing material replaced, the inner casing cleaned and the whole set retrofitted. A number of techniques can be used to reduce auxiliary fan noise in underground mines. These range from selecting the right fan for the job to installing adequate silencers. The choice depends on the air quantity requirement at the working place, cross-sectional area of the opening, duct diameter, fan type (axial or centrifugal) and local restrictions. Auxiliary ventilation layouts and best practices used to overcome potential problems related to overexposure to fan noise in underground hard rock mines are presented here. Factors such as fan type, rotational speed, duct diameter, and silencer-duct arrangements and their effects on noise attenuation are discussed."

"IntroductionThe Hull iron range, comprising the Forsyth, Scott , Baldwin and Lawless properties (Fig. I), is in Gatineau Park, on the outskirt s o f the city of Hull , and about 6 miles (10 kilometres) northwest of the Federal Parliament Buildings.The deposits have been known many years and described numerous times, although the history has been treated lightly in former publications. Total ore shipments have been calculated at 122,700 long tons, of which over 80% were mined before 1900 and 74% in two brief periods: 1870-74 and 1880-82. It is surprising that the period 1870-74 has been overlooked by most authors and 1880-82 ignored altogether. More surprising, the essential data for these two periods are contained in manuscripts of the Robert Bell collection, which must have been available to officers of the Geological Survey o f Canada.The period 1801-1874 ha s already been covered by the writer in ""Pioneer mines”, but much information has come to light since publication. The present paper is therefore based o n new data and a fresh appraisal. However, little additional data were found for the early history (1801-1854) or for the legal cases involving A.H. Baldwin, and these parts were mainly summarized from the relevant sections of the above-mentioned publication.GeologyThe ore deposits are all situated somewhat below the middle of a graphitic, calcitic marble horizon, here folded into a northeast-plunging synform. The Forsyth, Scott and Baldwin deposits are on the south limb of the synform; the Lawless is on the north limb. The marble is underlain by three non-carbonate groups: biotite gneiss with interlayered quartzite (top), granite gneiss and skarn (middle), and biotite-garnet gneiss (bottom). Below these groups is a lower horizon of graphitic, calcitic marble. The whole sequence is Precambrian and has been subjected to high-grade (Grenvillian) metamorphism, but, in the north, is cut by an unmetamorphosed Cambro-Ordovician diabase dyke. "Newmont’s Mike prospect, currently undeveloped, is a blind Cu-Au(-Zn) deposit on the Carlin Trend, containing >8.5 M oz. Au, 1027 M lbs. Cu, and 809 M lbs. Zn as Carlin-type gold and polymetallic Cu-Zn minerals in Paleozoic lower-plate carbonates and shales. This project was undertaken 1) to examine the effectiveness of different lixiviants for leaching the Mike supergene Cu-Au ores via bottle roll tests, and 2) to determine what ore minerals resist dissolution in each leaching agent by comparing the mineralogy and chemistry of head and tail samples. Sulfuric and sulfurous acids were used to leach copper and cyanide was used to leach gold. Thiourea, glycine, and other lixiviants were used to leach both base metals and precious metal. QEMSCAN and SEM study of six samples of different ore types and grades indicate that the Au occurs as varieties of native gold, including auricupride and electrum. Major Cu minerals are native Cu, cuprite, malachite, chrysocolla, and conichalcite (Ca-Cu arsenate), with locally significant Cu in jarosite and goethite. Gangue mineralogy is dominated by quartz, sericite, chlorite, alunite, smectite and kaolinite, K-feldspar, and iron oxides (sensu lato). Results of bottle roll tests and leach residue mineralogy will be presented and discussed at the conference.INTRODUCTION Resource and Geologic Setting The Mike deposit is a large, blind Cu-Au(-Zn) deposit in the Maggie Creek district of the Carlin Trend of Nevada, USA, near the Gold Quarry mine (Figure 1). The mineral inventory, based on drilling, is 8.568 Moz. Au, 1027 M lbs. Cu, and 809 M lbs. Zn at average grades of 0.72 g/t Au, 0.34 wt% Cu, and 2.13 wt% Zn (inventory for a cone at $400/oz Au and $0.80/lb Cu by Norby and Orobona, 2002)."

There appears to a definite trend toward the hoisting of greater tonnages from greater depths. There is every indication that this trend will continue and we feel that improvements in the design, fabrication and installation of mine guides will be of significant importance in the future. The present state of the art in mine-shaft guide systems is reviewed and the parameters required for improvement are derived in this paper. Finally, a proposal is made for a new steel guide system which meets the parameters and is economical to fabricate and install.

Semisolid casting provides grain refinement of the cast structure and prevents macro-segregation. The conventional semisolid slurry is obtained by electromagnetic or mechanical stirring. In our process, the magnesium alloy (AZ31) slurry is made using an inclined cooling plate instead of the conventional methods. The slurry obtained is cast into a twin-roll caster and makes a continuous sheet of 2 or 3 mm thick. The most important factors that influence the sheet casting are the casting temperature and twin-roll speed.

This work presents early results from the first study to optimize the hydrodynamics of a Plasma Lift Reactor (PLR). The PLR is designed to break down organic contaminants in aqueous solutions. New experimental results are presented for air/water tests and for plasma degradation of organic contaminants in Bayer liquor. In addition, a multiphase Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) model has been developed which predicts the hydrodynamic behavior in the PLR. These results of this work suggest the PLR is effective at reducing contaminants in the Bayer liquor and that the CFD model adequately describes the hydrodynamic flow.

Cold rolling is one of the most important techniques in metal forming since the cold rolling products are almost finished product, The product quality of this process is widely influenced by friction in the roll gap; therefore, controlling the friction and other parameters affecting the cold rolling is very important in order to have a product with high quality, Among the cold rolling parameters, the pressure distribution or friction hill within the roll gap is known as the most significant one, In this study, a new software (Matroll), is introduced which can determine the coefficient of friction (COF) and plot the friction hills for an industrial mill, Besides, based on rolling equations, it offers about 25 rolling parameters as outputs. To verify the software operation, the real industrial rolling data was used as inputs, The results (outputs) are in good agreements with the findings of other researchers, The COF values are very reasonable, The friction hill shows that COF is not constant over the whole arc of contact.

"New generation of Al-Mg-Si alloys with thermally stable dispersoids that prevent recrystallization and grain growth during hot deformation are currently used in automotive components requiring good formability. Alloy chemistry controls the phase formation especially age-hardening precipitates, dispersoids, and primary intermetallic which have pronounced effect on grain structure, strength and formability. In this work, thermodynamic calculations have been used to predict the effects of varying levels of Si (0.5-1.5wt%), Mg (0.5-1.5wt%) and Mn (0.1-2.5wt%) on phase selection. Thermodynamic calculations have been performed in equilibrium and non-equilibrium conditions via the FactSage™ software using the FTlite database. Selected compositions have been cast, heat treated, extruded and characterized through scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive spectroscopy and electron channeling contrast imaging techniques. The calculations showed that at the hot deformation temperature of ~540 oC, exceeding certain Mg and Si levels would lead to retained *-Mg2Si intermetallics and Si particles at the grain boundaries in addition to a-Al-(Mn,Fe)-Si. It was found that retained *-Mg2Si phase which adversely affects formability can be avoided for Si+2Mg levels lower than 2.3wt%. FactSage calculations also showed that increasing Mn from 0.5wt% to 1wt% leads to an increase in the amount of dispersoids (from 1wt% to 2wt%) that can potentially slow down recrystallization and grain growth during hot deformation and improve formability. Calculations at room temperature also show that for an alloy with 0.7wt% Mg, excess Si beyond 0.7 wt% promotes the precipitation of Si clusters in the Al matrix that accelerate natural age-hardening. Results were confirmed by experimental investigation.INTRODUCTIONAluminum alloy 6082 (Al-Mg-Si) is used in the automotive industry because of its high strength, and good weldability (I. J. Polmear, 2006). The alloy is age-hardenable through the precipitation of ß-Mg2Si and its precursors, and the recrystallization is usually inhibited by Mn- and Cr-containing dispersoids formed through high temperature heat treatments (I. Polmear & Couper, 1988). However, it is known that minor changes in alloy chemistry (Mg/Si ratio) can have significant influences on the ductility and formability of these alloys by altering phase selection and the resultant microstructure (Gupta, Lloyd, & Court, 2001; McQueen & Celliers, 1997; Zajac, Hutchinson, Johansson, & Gullman, 1994). For automotive applications where wrought alloys (usually extrusions) are cold-formed to produce suspension components, the chemistry of the alloys and the extruded structure are of crucial importance as they determine the formability at room temperature (Asensio-Lozano, Suárez-Peña, & Vander Voort, 2014). In this study, thermodynamic calculations along with experimental investigations were carried out on the Al-Mg-Si system to understand their phase formation and precipitation hardening as a function of alloy composition."

"Three stages, each characterized by a particular sedimentation, magmatism, mineralization and deformation, are recognized in the geological history of Gaspe. The first stage led to the formation of the Taconian orogen, the second to that of the Acadian orogen and the third stage to the accumulation of a post-orogenic cover. The Taconian orogen includes volcanic and detrital rocks of Late Precambrian or Cambrian and Lower to Middle Ordovician ages in which ultrabasic intrusions have been emplaced. Folding is severe. Mineralization is of the Cr-Ni-Cu type, related to the igneous facies.The rocks constituting the Acadian orogen include two distinctive sequences corresponding to two successive sub-stages. The second substage began in Early Devonian time with the first pulses of the Acadian orogeny. The rocks of the first substage grade southward from a nearly platformal sequence to an assemblage implying less stability and spotty volcanism. The second substage was one of synorogenic deposition of elastic rocks, first in a marine environment and later under terrestrial conditions. Granitic intrusions, surrounded by aureoles of skarn and hornfels in which Cu-Pb-Zn mineralization is found, accompanied the Acadian deformation. The second-stage"

"With the requirements of air pollution codes becoming more and more critical, the role of the ventilation engineer in industry has become an extremely important one. The ventilation engineer must provide the expertise for the selection of equipment and the design of systems which will reduce pollution to an acceptable level. Seventy years ago a period of prospecting and mining activity began in the Eastern Townships of Quebec that seems to have been quite equal to that of recent years in the Rouyn field. In the following six or seven years a large amount of work was done over a widespread area. About fifty deposits gave some shipment of ore, from a few tons upwards, and as many as five hundred occurrences of copper were made known in the district by official records. Comparing the scale of commercial undertakings of that time and of the present day, these developments must have occupied quite as large a share of the capital and man-power of the Province as northern Quebec employs today. Working conditions at that time were not very favourable. The country was then only newly opened for settlement, and colonists were few and widely separated. Roads of the class built today were unknown. A single line of railway, the Grand Trunk, crossed the district from east to west. Colonization companies controlled large blocks of land on which they owned mining rights and usually reserved these rights in whole, or in part, when selling the lands. Then, as now, the precious metals belonged to the Crown. Yet the work was not without its successes. One of the first deposits discovered, the Acton, was, for a few years, one of the most profitable producing copper mines of its time. Another, the Eustis mine, has been in almost constant operation ever since, and is now vigorously pushing further development. At least two others, now quiescent, proved profitable operations, and several made considerable production. The manufacture of sulphuric acid in Canada was begun by the founder of the Nichols Company at Capelton, on a deposit that is now being re-developed, after a long and creditable career.

"In-pit crushing and conveyor (IPCC) systems have become increasingly popular in the mining industry as an alternative to truck-and-shovel systems. Deciding whether to haul waste rock by truck or IPCC represents an important gap to be investigated in semi-mobile IPCC systems. A cost analysis is presented to evaluate the feasibility of crushing and conveying waste material in IPCC systems, along with sensitivity and risk assessments through Monte Carlo simulation. Although the capital expenditure is higher, results showed waste crushing will be feasible in deep pits and over long mine life and haul distances.RÉSUMÉ La popularité des systèmes de concassage et de transport dans la fosse minière (IPCC, de l’anglais In-pit crushing and conveyor) n’a cessé de croître dans l’industrie minière ; ils constituent en effet une option intéressante de remplacement des systèmes par camions et pelles mécaniques. Le choix entre le transport des stériles par camions ou par IPCC est encore difficile à faire et devra faire l’objet d’une étude approfondie au niveau des systèmes d’IPCC semi-mobiles. Une analyse des coûts est présentée pour évaluer la faisabilité du concassage et du transport des stériles par les systèmes d’IPCC, de même que des évaluations de la sensibilité et des risques par le biais de la simulation de Monte Carlo. Si les dépenses en immobilisations s’avèrent être plus élevées, les résultats ont cependant montré que le concassage des stériles sera envisageable dans des fosses profondes ainsi que sur une longue durée de vie et de longues distances de transport. INTRODUCTIONThe mining industry is currently facing many challenges such as low commodity prices, increasing environmental concerns and regulations, lower grades, deeper mines, and greater waste-rock quantities. As a result, the profitability of mining operations has decreased, with many mines stopping or suspending operations, and many new projects being postponed. Mining companies have therefore focused on improvements and innovations to increase the cost effectiveness of operations, for example, increasing production capacity to take advantage of the economies of scale (Crowson, 2003) and decreasing the unit operation cost. Changes in production capacity force mining companies to evaluate alternative material handling systems.During the past few decades and within material handling systems, significant improvements have been made to truck performance and capacity. Consequently, operating expenditures (OPEX) associated with fuel and maintenance have risen swiftly. In a mining operation, truck hauling systems now represent 40–50% of the capital cost and approximately 45% of the OPEX (Tutton & Streck, 2009). Additionally, material transportation costs are expected to increase due to longer haul distances arising from deeper and larger mines (Fleet et al., 2015). Finally, large fluctuations in fuel prices result in high risks associated with truck OPEX. According to the United States Energy Information Administration (2015), the cost of crude oil—the largest component of the retail price of diesel fuel—increased from US$24.31/barrel in 1986 to US$46.92/barrel in 2016, peaking at US$151.72/barrel in 2008 (Macrotrends, 2016)."

While the concepts of Aboriginal title share a similar jurisprudence in both Australia and Canada resource development regimes on Aboriginal title lands differ significantly. In Australia, the process is the right to negotiate with mining proponents. In Canada, the process is the duty to consult with government regarding mining projects. This paper compares and assesses the processes for ?consultation and negotiation? with Indigenous peoples when development actions (particularly in the context of mining resource development) impact Indigenous property rights and how agreement making can be progressed. This paper will question whether the resource development processes afford Indigenous people?s property rights full respect when mining developments on Indigenous lands are proposed.

The Sigma-Lamaque Complex is considered a lode-gold deposit characterized by narrow vein structures, which have been mined historically by underground methods. In addition to the narrow vertical structures, mining also took place on horizontal veins, ?North Dipper? veins and dykes mineralized with sub-horizontal veins and stringers. Over the 60 + years of production, mining took place to a depth of 1.8 km. The upper portion of the deposit was considered all but exhausted, when viewed from an underground mining perspective. The year 1998 is considered a turning point for the Complex when a small open pit was mined at Sigma. The resource evaluation methods used underground were applied to surface mining, which allowed small pits to be mined. The resource evaluation method considered only the narrow vertical structures and was not well adapted to open pit mining. As a consequence, resources were consistently under evaluated. It became clear that a new geological approach was necessary to more accurately define resources (i.e., what was being mined). In order to integrate all characteristics (geometry, mechanics and chronology) of this complex lode-gold deposit, a new geological model was proposed. Due to this new approach, dating to February 2000 and updated in December 2000, the reserves evaluated in the first 180 meters now stand at 15 million tonnes @ 2.61 g/t Au (1,265,350 oz). Those reserves cover an east-west corridor extending 1,500 m by 750 m.

This is because for effective arching mechanism to develop in the roof minute block displacements must take place and some of the available discontinuities shear strength must be mobilized. If from the beginning of the simulation the underground opening already exists in the numerical model, block displacements into the excavation space will initiate and develop from time zero, before the initial stresses in the model have attained their actual initial level in the field. These initial block displacements are therefore artificial and exist only in the numerical model, not in the physical reality, and may lead to erroneous assessment of the stability of the designed structure, typically on the conservative side. We have introduced sequence excavation capabilities both in the numerical manifold (NMM) and the discontinuous deformation analysis (DDA) methods and show here the advantages of this modification using three different case studies, each illuminating a different aspect of this enhancement.We begin with the 25 meter deep 2000 year old underground Zedekiah limestone quarry below the old city of Jerusalem, Israel, which is still standing today unsupported with a free span of 40 m. We show that when the opening exists from the beginning of the numerical simulation the required friction angle for roof stability is 25 degrees, whereas when the opening is removed after all stresses and displacements in the model have been stabilized the required friction angle for stability is only 15 degrees.We then model the excavation sequence of a tunnel model representing a 2500 meter deep research tunnel in the Jinping hydroelectric project, China, in order to determine the in situ stress field at this depth by a grid search inversion of displacement data obtained using the sliding micrometer technology in the course of tunnel excavation. Thus we are able to constrain the in situ stress field at these depths where standard in situ stress measurement procedures are extremely difficult to execute properly.Finally, we use sequence excavation modeling capability to find the total height of the expected loosening zone around tunnels excavated through columnar jointed basalts which pose a great engineering challenge because of the characteristic dense network of slender prismatic blocks that transect the opening at a steep inclination. We use MPBX data obtained during excavation of a deep tunnel through such a rock mass to validate our numerical results and show that application of standard empirical guidelines for dimensioning rock bolt reinforcement in such rock masses may in fact result in very un-conservative design because existing empirical approaches typically ignore the anisotropic nature of the structure of such rock masses which, as we show, plays a very significant role in determination of the extent, shape, and geometry of the loosening zone around the opening."
