"The induration of iron ore pellets has always utilized prefired pellets to protect the pallet cars from the environment of the induration furnace. This paper presents the process used to obtain superior upper sidewalls. These heat resistant castings are used on induration pallet cars, and their life improvements by as much as 400% is a significant step towards the reduction of the prefired (or hearth layer pellets.) The benefit to the industry in the removal of the hearth layer is improved overall productivity. IntroductionThe Iron Ore Company of Canada (IOC) operates with production facilities located in Labrador City, Newfoundland and Sept Iles, Quebec. It has recently been acquired by North Limited, an Australian based resource oriented company. Prior to its acquisition, IOC has examined several methods of operational cost reductions. One of these was an examination of indurrating pallets. Pallets are composed of numerous assemblies and sub-assemblies. The examination of the upper sidewalls began as an intent to increase the operational life of the component. The anticipated net effect was to be a reduction in the overall pallet maintenance cost. All of the components and assemblies have undergone a severe scrutiny. IOC has found that the success of the project has depended upon not only the technical competency of all parties involved, but also upon the ability to share risk, to be innovative, and to find a partner with whom the development can proceed without fear and yet with accountability. IOC has found in Cast Steel Products (CSP) such a partner in the field of pallet development. This paper will undertake to explore the progression into the arena of partnering between IOC and CSP. CSP and IOC met in the fall of 1994. The work of re-engineering the pallets began with an initial order for 36 pallets in March, 1995. The work on the upper sidewalls involved segregation of the effect of alloy development versus physical geometry development. The nature of partnering between the two companies allocated alloy development to IOC and physical geometry development to CSP, yet no advancements were made in either area without the close co-operation or the involvement of both partners."

Sociedad Minera Cerro Verde S.A.A leaches secondary copper sulfides. In recent years, the mine has introduced innovations that have improved the management of mineral crushing, agglomeration, curing, and leaching. The crushing plant, for example, uses the concepts of degree of balance and percentage of time in an operationally balanced state which, displayed in real time, facilitate more intensive and uniform utilization of the crushers. High agglomerate quality is ensured with the correct dose of moisture, which is adjusted to the changing characteristics of the mineral through the use of electrical conductivity measurements. The amount of acid used for curing the agglomerate is also adjusted by using quality control information. Finally, the stockpile irrigation regime is managed using the criteria established by the "Lixiviant Request Rate", which optimizes the addition of leaching solution, creating such benefits as faster recovery, and reduced acid and energy consumption.

At present there is considerable confusion in the asbestos industry with regard to density and porosity measurements of asbestos. In order to clarify the situation, various notions of porosity and density are defined by means of simple schemes and clear symbols are proposed to denote them. An experimental procedure is then preposed and outlined, which is based upon Archimedes' principle. Experimental conditions at each stage of the method are explained clearly in order to minimize the opportunity for errors. Finally, the results of a study on the porosity and density of asbestos minerals having various characteristics are presented.

A DISCUSSION is presented of natural gas production and field processing equipment as now utilized in the gas producing areas of the United States, with reference to use of such equipment in Canadian gas areas. The scope of the paper is confined to a general description of various types and methods of using surface production equipment. The discussion is divided under two general groups: well-head production equipment, and field processing. The first will be concerned primarily with indirect heaters, separators, knockouts, and special versions of this equipment. The second major group includes the field processing equipment for handling natural gas. A delineation should be made here as to the meaning of field processing as used in this discussion. We will limit our term to mean such processing equipment as may be used in producing fields to process gas or its by products in a manner that does not require conventional plant practices either in operation or supervision. This covers such equipment as is necessary to complete preparation of gas for sale to pipeline and/ or is necessary to recover valuable components. Under this heading we will discuss glycol dehydration, solid desiccant dehydration, low-temperature separation, mechanical refrigeration, and desorbtion-stabilization. These are all processes involved in preparing gas for final sale or disposal. They do not include the more conventional and large-scale plant process systems.

"This paper presents a phenomenological model of the rate of iron(III) precipitation in batch and continuous autoclaves at medium temperature operating conditions. The rate expressions are based on information obtained from the literature and experimentation at low and high pulp densities. Special allowance is made for the formation of surface nuclei, which appears to be promoted at a higher iron(III) precipitate surface area, especially in suspensions of lower terminal acidity. This leads to the formation of secondary particulates and provides the required link to simulate high pulp density leaching-precipitation systems, using low pulp density batch precipitation data. In particular, the model allows direct application of the simulation to the autoclave oxidation of iron-containing copper sulfide concentrates and provides a good estimation of the relative precipitation rate of hematite, the preferred product, compared to hydronium jarosite. Some interesting mechanistic understandings of iron(III) precipitation in autoclaves are further elucidated.INTRODUCTIONThe objective of this work is to describe the rate of iron(III) precipitation and the relative amounts of hematite compared to hydronium jarosite precipitation during batch and continuous chalcopyrite oxidation under medium temperature (MT) (~130 to 160ºC) autoclave conditions. Published information has not yet revealed sufficient mechanistic insights about this sparingly soluble salt system under these conditions. The rate expressions in this paper are based in part on current literature information, supplemented by qualitative experimental observation at low pulp density conditions, in particular the high-resolution backscatter electron (BSE) images and particle size distributions (PSDs) of the precipitates. A summary of this work and insights from the literature are presented first, after which the behaviour of iron(III) in high pulp density leaching systems is used to derive a phenomenological expression of the effect of existing iron(III) precipitate surface area on the precipitation rate. The overall regression encapsulates all the experimental results, i.e., those obtained in both batch and continuous autoclave configurations (Steyl, 2012a)."

"The TankCell® 300 forced air flotation cell designed and built by Outotec, with active volume of over 300 m3, was installed at Codelco’s Chuquicamata concentrator in September 2008. After that, a program was conducted, where the new cell was tested against the plant’s existing flotation cells of type TankCell® 160, with an active volume of over 160 cubic meters.Testing program was exhaustive and detailed. Grade-recovery curves for each setup were reported, along with recoveries by particle size. Secondly, operational characteristics like air feed and froth height setpoints, and power consumption are compared side-by-side. As the third topic, gas dispersion characterization included velocity mapping, holdup, bubble size and bubble surface area flux operating range. The fourth area of interest was the retention time distribution (RTD) of the 300 and 160 m3 cells in comparison. A detailed campaign using radioactive tracer tests was conducted to clarify this.All of the investigations mentioned above are reported in separate papers for more detail. The aim of this paper is to collect the key findings, and present them in real terms, always referring to operability and metallurgy of the cells. It is destined for people designing new plants and to those improving and expanding existing ones. The most frequently heard question is: will the new large cells operate at same efficiency as the smaller ones. In short, the answer is: NO. They operate at improved efficiency!INTRODUCTIONIn the last two decades of minerals processing, there have been three dominant trends of development in the flotation technology: equipment scale-up, cell characterization and circuit modeling. Equipment scale-up has been rapid in the past two decades. In the year 1990, the largest flotation cell in use was 50 cubic meters of size. This year, 300 cubic meters is the largest installed cell. Characterization of flotation equipment and circuits is a very popular subject nowadays and has helped many operations to improve their recoveries through better control strategies, for example by using optimized air feed and level control profiles (Gorain, 2005), (Doucet, Gomez, Finch, 2006), or through better maintenance (Coleman, Urtubia, Alexander, 2006). Characterization work is closely linked to circuit modeling. The aim is to produce sufficient amount of data to allow reliable model building. These models are then used to design new circuits and to improve existing ones. So in summary, these three lines of development have slightly different aims – from capital and operational cost to performance optimization. Ultimately, they converge in the same end result – maximizing the profitability of the operation. Following chapters will summarize the extensive test work and scientific studies at Codelco Chuquicamata. The aim was to compare a TankCell® 300 cell, with nominal volume of 300 m3, against two TankCell® 160 machines, with 160 m3 volume in each. The work should yield answers to questions: does the larger cell produce similar results – is the scale-up successful?"

SYNOPSIS Canadian Refractories, Limited, produce a wide range of basic refractories. The chief raw material use in their manufacture is the magnesite which is mined, and beneficiated in a heavy media separation plant, at Kilmar, Que. This paper describes the underground operation and the plant and explains how the gravity separation of light, siliceous gangue from the ore has changed the mining practice, increased the ore reserves, and improved the chemical uniformity of the crushed ore. HISTORY REFRACTORIES are essential in the production of steel and base metals and in other high-temperature processes. Basic refractories, chiefly composed of magnesia which is obtained by burning magnesite, are used to line and repair basic furnaces. When World War I cut? off the importation of Austrian magnesite, upon which North American industry had depended, domestic sources bad to be found. In Quebec, work was begun on deposits of magnesite at Kilmar, half way between Ottawa and Montreal and about ten miles north of the Ottawa river. By the end of the war substantial tonnages were being quarried and calcined, but, when Austrian magnesite again became available, the industry declined rapidly. In 1925, the National Research Council, in co-operation with the Federal Department of Mines, began an investigation of the industry's technical problems. The result of this research work, which was taken over fully by the Company in 1943 and is actively continued, is that the single product of the early 1920's has been supplemented by more than forty specialized products serving the metallurgical and chemical industries across Canada and in more than thirty other countries.

"Enormous deposits of gypsum of exceptionally high grade are readily accessible in southwestern Newfoundland. Coming large-scale production from one of these is resulting in renewed interest in deposits which have been known for more than a hundred and twenty years. General stratigraphy and structure of the Carboniferous rocks in which the gypsum occurs are de-scribed. The stratigraphic position of the basal gypsum-anhydrite zone is described. This massive evaporite horizon, which reaches a thickness of about 1,0001 feet, appears at Fishels-Heatherton, where it is largely undeveloped, and again on the nose of an anticline east of Flat bay, where a present production of 20,000 to 40,000 tons per annum is soon to be expanded to make it one of Canada's major producers. Detailed descriptions are given of the several types of gypsum, the relation of the gypsum and anhydrite, and the distribution of sodium chloride in the evaporite beds, and the bearing of all these on the origin of the gypsum are discussed. Brief reference is made to relation to world markets, mining and transportation, grade, and reserves."

"Several mineralogical investigations have revealed the composition of modified kimberlites and the mud generated during treatment of diamonds, which contains up to 50% clay minerals (e.g., talc, talcsaponite, chlorite-saponite, Na-saponite) and X-ray amorphous phase. We investigated the composition of the natural diamond surface in relation to the diagnosed minerals and established the sequence and conditions for mineral formation on the crystal surface under kimberlite processing conditions. This article suggests a method to destroy and further dissolve minerals on the crystal surfaces using water system electrolysis products, which makes it possible to restore the diamond hydrophobic properties. The application of chemically treated water in the foam separation cycle under the conditions of high recovery of diamonds made it possible to increase the content of the factory concentrate by 8.0%.INTRODUCTIONThe high content of the modified minerals in the kimberlite ore results in the formation of hydrophilic slicks on the surface of the crystals which decreases the diamond’s hydrophobic properties and increases the losses thereof in the process of grease and foam separation to 20-30% (Kurenkov, 1957; Chanturiya et al., 1998, 1999, 2005; Duikarev et al., 2000).The previous researches have revealed the fact that the prospective way of solving the problem of intensity of mineral impurities formation on the surface of the crystals and the increase of concentration parameters is reached due to application of physical and chemical stimulation techniques on the solid and liquid pulp (Stricland-Constable, 1971; “Improvement of the technology…”, 2006; Makarskii, Adodin & Tarasova, 2011; Chanturiya, Dvoychenkova & Trofimova, 2012). "Rare earth elements have unique properties because of the special electronic structure. In this paper the improvement of refractory material performance by the light rare earth oxides was introduced. The experiments showed that adding a bit of rare earth oxide could obviously improve the performance of the refractory material. INTRODUCTIONIn recent years, refractory materials are widely applied in the steel smelting process as a ladle lining material. In China, although the total production of fire-proof material exceeds normal demand, but the quality and variety of fire-proof material still have a big gap with world advanced level. A number of refractory products need to be imported from abroad. With the rapid development of domestic steel production, the ladle lining with refractory is gradually running after the world advanced level on production technology, production variety, and quality level. It replaces some imported products meeting the needs of the development of the iron making production. Therefore, there is an important significance to research on solving the problems of the ladle refractory reasonably and avoiding or reducing blind and not proper use of the imported refractory ( Jing, 2007).On the other hand, rare earth oxide has some special excellent properties. Firstly, they are very good refractory materials with their high melting point;Next, they have good resistance to water and alkali resistance function;Thirdly, it is easy for rare earth oxide to generated composite oxide reacting with other metal oxide,achieving the purpose to improving the material properties (Xu, 1978; Diao, 1979). China has a variety of rare earth resources,and rare earth resources is more advantageous in Baotou,taking up about 36 percent of world reserves,which is the world's top of rare earth mineral. In recent years the rare earth products output has risen sharply and many varieties and specifications have appeared. So it is necessary to study the new field of rare earth compound to open up new markets. Thus, it has a very vital significance to promote the further development of rare earth industry, adjust the rare earth products structure, ease the contradiction between supply and demand, and improve refractory products quality and grade in order to better serve the main body production.I In this paper, the experiments are mainly for 210 tons of Al2O3-MgO style series refractory materials belong to ladle lining bag from Baotou Iron & Steel Group Corporation Sheet Factory. Introduction The greater portion of the information presented in this paper was obtained in the course of an investigation on clay gathering and its cost in the provinces of Quebec and Ontario (1). For assistance in the preparation of the paper, the writer wishes to record his thanks to Mr. Howells Fréchette, Chief of the Ceramics and Road Materials Division of the Mines Branch. Clays are mineral substances consisting essentially of hydrous aluminium silicate which become plastic when wet, fairly hard when dry, and stony masses when burned to a sufficiently high temperature and re-cooled. Shales are clays which have been indurated by the processes of nature. Millions of tons of clays and shales are won yearly for the production of brick, tile, sewer pipe, drain tile, roofing tile, fire-brick, china-ware, wall and floor tile, cement, and a host of other products. There are certain types of clay which, due to their particular qualities and limited distribution, are mined entirely or in part for sale to manufacturers, and are even exported from one country to another, as for example china-clays or kaolins, utilized in the manufacture of white-wares and in the paper industry, due to their consistent whiteness; ball-clays, utilized in the white-ware industry, due to their bonding power and whiteness; slip-clays, used in the stone-ware industry because of their glazing properties, and in the grinding-wheel industry for their burned bonding properties; and suspension-clays, such as are used in the enamelling industry. However, the great bulk of clays and shales won are used in the production of heavy clay products, and the manufacturer of these generally owns and operates his own deposit of raw material.

The mining of high-grade, narrow vein deposits is an important field of activity in the precious metal mining sector. The principle factor that has undermined the profitability and effectiveness of mining such ore zones is the substantial dilution that occurs when blasting with explosives during extraction. In order to minimise dilution, the Thermal Fragmentation Mining Method enables the operator to extract a narrow mineralised corridor, 50 cm to 1 metre wide (according to the width of the vein), between two sub-level drifts. By inserting a strong burner powered by diesel fuel and compressed air into a pilot hole previously drilled directly into the vein, a thermal reaction is created, spalling the rock and enlarging the hole to 80 cm in diameter. The remaining ore between the thermal holes is broken loose using low powered explosives, leaving the waste walls intact. This patented method produces highly concentrated ore, resulting in 400% - 500% less dilution when compared to conventional mining methods. The mining method reduces the environmental affects of mining operations since much smaller quantities of rock are displaced, stockpiled, and treated using chemical agents. The fully mechanised equipment operated by a 2-person team (1 thermal fragmentation operator, 1 drilling operator) maximises the effectiveness of skilled personnel, and increases productivity and safety. The Thermal Fragmentation is currently employed in 3 mining operations in North America.

One of the oldest settled portions of Canada is that "strip of land" extending into the Gulf of St. Lawrence, known as the Gaspe peninsula, with the Bay of Chaleur on its southern boundary. This "strip of land" is still so very sparcely populated that only at a few places does settlement extend more than a few miles from the coast. ? The peninsula is 160 miles long, 75 miles wide and with the exception of the above mentioned settlements is a mountainous wildness-void of all roads or inhabitants. Developments in the interior, of all nature, out-side of the cutting of timber by limit holders, was entirely lacking until the year 1915, when mining was first commenced. In the summer of 1844 Sir William Logan made a preliminary survey across the peninsula, from Cape Chat on the Gulf of St. Lawrence to Cascapedia on the Bay of Chaleur, passing through a country ?of which very little was known at that time. After a rather rough trip to the headwaters of the Grand Cascapedia river, Logan's party descended this river to its mouth, passing ten miles west of what is now known as the Federal mines. There is no record of Logan, or of any of his party, finding zinc or lead ores of any character on their journey across the peninsula, and until 1909 no precious or base metals were discovered within reasonable distance of Logan's survey.

The preparation of high-purity zirconyl compounds was studied in order to develop an economical process for obtaining pure zirconium via the caustic fritting of zircon sand. The direct dissolution of caustic frits with concentrated hydrochloric or nitric acid at 80c. followed by the addition of a small amount of acidified gelatin, gave high-purity zirconyl chloride or nitrate. The addition of a small amount of gelatin caused a mutual flocculation between colloidal silica and gelatin. The precipitation of this silica floc markedly lowered the content of silica in the product. The silica content of the compounds (or solution) so produced, generally less than 100 ppm., was sufficiently low for tributyl phosphate extraction for nitrate solutions. It was found that the degree of purification de-pends not only on the procedures employed but also on the nature of the frit itself. Silica was more effectively eliminated from the fritted product produced at higher temperatures, and less silica was present in the com-pound prepared from the frit produced in a shorter heating time. "To understand the operation of jigs and other separating processes based on differences in gravity, it is desirable to analyse the motion of various particles in given media under specific conditions. A summary of the earlier theories shows that they lead to unsatisfactory or excessively complicated formulae in cases such as coal jigging. By adopting a simplified theory of the motion of particles in a fluid, the size and duration of the initial accelerated motion of a particle falling in hindered settling can be calculated. Based on this mathematical analysis, examples referring to actual coal jigging practice show that it is desirable to prolong and/or repeat, as frequently as possible, the optimum conditions corresponding to an effective acceleration of the particles. The separation is then obtained according to gravity rather than to particle dimensions, as would be the case if the velocity of the particles• were allowed to approach its terminal value. To achieve this gravity separation, it is suggested that the suction phase of the jigging cycle be artificially prolonged and the frequency of pulsations increased as much as possible for washing the coals of smaller sizes."

ABSTRACT The Redwater pool, in north-central Alberta, was discovered in October, 1948, and at the end of 1950 was about 85 per cent developed. Production is from a Devonian coral limestone reef and is found at an average depth of 3,150 feet. The pool has an estimated .productive area of 37,000 acres, and a maximum oil zone thickness of slightly over 200 feet. Wide variations exist in both type and values of porosity, with the average value determined for the reservoir being 6.16 per cent. The total stock tank oil in place is about 1.24 billion barrels. The crude has a saturation pressure of 485 psig, com-pared to the original value of 1,050 psig for the reservoir, and the principal recovery mechanism so far has been the natural water drive. Cumulative production to January 1st, 1951, has been about 15.5 million barrels. These withdrawals resulted in a reservoir pressure decline of slightly over 100 psi. Predictions of future behaviour indicate that the water drive will not be of sufficient magnitude to maintain the reservoir above saturation pressure past 1953, and that, with natural depletion, the pool will be produced largely by a solution gas drive. Pressure maintenance by water injection has been considered and the possibility of raising the pressure to the original value of 1,050 psig is also discussed. INTRODUCTION WITH the discovery of the Lewduc pool, early in 1947, the Devonian limestone became the major geological formation contributing to Western Canada's rapidly growing petroleum reserves. Redwater, discovered in October, 1948, is now the largest known Devonian pool in Canada, with a recoverable reserve estimated at approximately 500 million barrels. Until recent years, the knowledge of the nature and characteristics of this type of limestone reservoir has been comparatively limited.

Why A Friction Hoist? B EFORE discussing the equipment, it would be instructive to review the factors that influenced the management of Opemiska Cop-per Mines to purchase a friction hoist rather than a conventional double drum hoist. The mine required that 250 tons per hour be hoisted from a depth of 2,100 feet. They also specified that the top speed should not exceed 1800 feet per minute. DURING the past year the Cadillac-Malanie area in northwestern Quebec has been catapulted to the front as one of Canada&apos;s most active gold mining districts. Late in 1934 the area was lolling along in the doldrums, with one producing mine and a handful of active prospects. 1935 passed with only slightly increased activity, but saw the start of production at Canadian Malartic mine. Lightning struck in April, 1936, when a new and phenomenally rich ore-body was found in O&apos;Brien Gold mine, and by midsummer the camp was ablaze with activity. An important new discovery on the Pan-Canadian property, and pleasing underground developments at Sladen Malarric, East Malartic, and Lapa Cadillac, in addition to other new developments, lent fodder to the flame, and at present several dozen properties are being actively developed. For the past three seasons, the Geological Survey of Canada has been engaged in a fairly detailed study of the geology and mineral deposits across Cadillac, Malarric, and Fourniere townships. Ir is the purpose of this paper to present a brief preliminary statement of the structural and economic geology and to discuss some of the more important problems that have been found to exist. The reader is requested to remember that the paper is a preliminary one and that therefore the conclusions presented are open to revision. It is impossible to make full acknowledgment for help received, for the writers are indebted to practically every operator and prospector in the area for generous co-operation in the work, and to several private, provincial, and federal geologists for data and frank discussion of problems encountered. Over a score of student assistants from McGill, Queen&apos;s, and Toronto have given excellent service. Published reports by Wilson, Cooke, James, Mawdsley, L. V. Bell, and J. J. RISKGATE is an interactive online risk management system developed by the Minerals Industry Safety and Health Centre (MISHC; University of Queensland) to maximise health and safety performance in the mining industry through implementing continual improvement in management of major unwanted events. A comprehensive knowledge base has been captured for risk management of tyres, collisions, fires, isolation, strata underground, ground control open cut, explosions, explosives, manual tasks and slips/trips/falls. This will be extended to outburst, coal burst and bumps, interface displays and controls, tailings dams and inrush in 2013. RISKGATE presents substantive and leading edge controls to assist industry stakeholders in the design, management and reporting of organisational and regulatory compliance requirements. From a broader industry perspective, RISKGATE provides an environment for knowledge capture and knowledge exchange to drive innovation and best practice in the identification, assessment and management of risk. By capturing operational knowledge from industry experts, RISKGATE provides a cumulative corporate memory at a time of high personnel turnover in the coal industry. All major Australian mining companies are contributing topic experts to this broad industry initiative. In the first 24 months, nine coal mining companies nominated over 80 different experts who contributed over 400 days of individual time to the knowledge capture workshops. RISKGATE is the largest single Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP) occupational health and safety (OHS) initiative to date.

"This paper presents a short history of the development of milling at Buchans, Newfoundland, and a description of the operation.History and DevelopmentTHE original ore discovery was made at Buchans in 1905 by Matty Mitchell, a Micmac Indian who was prospecting for The Anglo Newfoundland Development Company, which company was then preparing to build a paper mill at Grand Falls, some 50 miles east of Buchans. A development program, initiated in 1906, was terminated in 1911 because of metallurgical difficulties. Intermittent testing was carried out by The American Smelting and Refining Company, and in 1925 a satisfactory method of concentration by flotation was found. Following this, intensive geophysical reconnaisasnce, succeeded by diamond drilling, uncovered two additional orebodies similar to the original discovery at Buchans River."
