The first continuous pressure disk filter took up industrial-scale operation in Germany in 1976. This paper comments on major components of pressure filter facilities from the point of view of industrial-plant suppliers. For lack of time aspects of economy have not been commented upon. The paper elucidates a number of process-engineering inter-relations. It outlines important development trends from the angle of a machine-building company.

The Bendigo Goldfield is AustraliaÆs second largest goldfield, having produced 22 million ounces of gold between 1851 and 1954. Development of the modern decline mine, initially for underground exploration and bulk sampling, commenced in 1998. The project is targeting new reefs below and along from historic workings beneath the city of Bendigo. The major technical challenge for the project is the inability to solely use drill core gold assays to estimate the grade of reefs, due to the coarsegrained nature of gold mineralisation, known as the nugget effect. In 2002, a program of bulk sampling commenced, resulting in the development of factors for converting drill hole grades to in situ reef grades. In mid 2006 commercial production commenced following the construction of a 600 000 t/yr processing plant adjacent to the Kangaroo Flat Mine portal, with plant feed being derived from four reefs in the Sheepshead and Deborah lines of reef. In early 2007 it became clear that the initial ore reserves had been overestimated, leading to an immediate change of strategy from production to exploration. A cash conservation program was also put in place. Exploration refocused onto the more historically productive Garden Gully and New Chum lines of reef, whilst a new grade estimation tool based primarily on the visual assessment of drill core was implemented. Immediate exploration success occurred with the discovery of four reefs in the Garden Gully line in early 2007. Successful step-out drilling during the year led to the decision to undertake trial mining in Gill reef. Trial production commenced in June 2008 and includes the processing of discrete ore blocks and the introduction of selective mining techniques. This paper examines the steps that have been taken to refocus exploration and to gain confidence in new exploration results, particularly through the visual grade estimation technique and assessment of trial mining Gill reef on the Garden Gully line. In addition, project factors relating to human skills, community relationships and financial management in a dynamic external environment are also addressed.

Sampling and e.m.f. probes were used in the liquid flow from the blast furnace and in the forehearth to evaluate the performance of the copper smelting system at E.R. & S. Significant variations in temperature, oxygen potential and copper content with slag depth and with position in the forehearth indicated that convective currents were causing considerable stirring in the forehearth. This was attributed to temperature fluctuations in the stream from the blast furnace, which resulted in colder slag being underlain by hotter matte. Tracer tests in the feed to the smelter and in the feed to the forehearth revealed considerable holdup of material in the plant and confirmed that the forehearth involved small scale turbulence but little large scale mixing. The results indicated that the copper content of slag continuously tapped from the forehearth could be lowered by at least 0.15% if better settling could be achieved and means of attaining this are discussed. As part of the investigation the recovery of copper from spent refractory bricks recycled through the smelter was evaluated. It was found that the recovery was high but it seems likely that the brick material is partly responsible for a build up of solid material in the forehearth.

The narrow quartz vein deposits at Konongo and Ghana Main Reef gold mines in Ghana were emplaced during the plastic flow cross folding of pre-existing sub-isoclinally folded volcanic and perivolcanic deposits of Proterozoic age. The older fold structures tightened differentially according to their position in relation to the axes of the cross fold pattern giving complex outlines to the reefs in both plan and cross section.Some 4500 measurements of bedding plane linears were used in the resolution of the Boabedroo footwall structure at Konongo. The methodology developed at the Boabedroo mine was then successfully applied to other complex bodies at the Konongo and Ghana Main Reef mines.All mine development, especially stope preparation, of the folded quartz reefs at Konongo and Ghana Main Reef was controlled by the geologist to ensure that the veins were removed with as few geologically enduced hiccoughs as possible.

A background characterisation study was carried out in the Sangre de Cristo mountains, New Mexico, to: quantify naturally occurring contaminant loads from mineralised areas; define site-specific background concentrations; and to determine key factors controlling spatial and temporal variations in contaminant concentrations. The study included a comprehensive sampling and testing program (paste pH/EC, ABA, leach extraction tests) of soil/bedrock from mineralised areas (including erosional scars), and a ground water and surface water quality monitoring program in selected mineralised watersheds. Results demonstrate that high concentrations of contaminants occur naturally in ground and surface water draining the mineralised area of the Red River basin. The erosional scars were found to represent the major source of acid rock drainage (ARD) (~66 per cent) in this area due to: high rates of weathering and erosion, which continually exposes sulfide-bearing outcrops; and high rates of run-off as a result of high elevation and lack of vegetation. The scar material is generally very acidic (paste pH ranges from 8.5 to 1.5; average = 3.6) with highly elevated concentrations of sulfate and leachable metals. The composition and concentration of leachable metals vary significantly, not only between scars but also within a given scar. While all streams draining the various scar watersheds are highly acidic, each has a characteristic æfingerprintÆ of sulfate and metal concentrations. Most of the run-off from the scars infiltrates into alluvial debris flow aprons and reaches the Red River via groundwater flow.

The concentrating plant of the Broken Hill South Limited was described in Proceedings No. 44, Australasian Institute Mining and Metallurgy, December, 1921, by Wainwright and Read. It was erected on the present site in 1907 and 1908.From that date, the plant has undergone various alterations consistent with metallurgical improvements. By 1925, the timber work of the gravity secti"on had seriously deteriorated, so much so, that, when the machinery was working, the floors and supports vibrated badly, causing heavy maintenance costs.In 1928, it was decided to erect a new gravity-treatment section, to be followed later by a new flotation section.

Blastholes fired in a pattern with a constant initiation delay create a frequency in the ground vibration similar to that from a percussion instrument, such as a drum, in the air. A constant firing delay generates a prime or forcing frequency into the ground motion. The forcing frequency may then be modified by ground transmission characteristics into subharmonics of the forcing frequency. The moving vibration source between blastholes also creates a frequency shift because of a Doppler effect. Other wave interactions may form beats. The effects are exacerbated by the accurate firing times of electronic detonators. This paper demonstrates how observations of wavetraces and frequency spectral analysis were used to recognise:Doppler effect and frequency ellipsoidssubharmonics (and sub-subharmonics) of the forcing frequencybeat formation that may double or triple peak particle velocity (PPV) levels.Recognition of beats permitted techniques to be used to control ground vibration from coal overburden blasting to limits deemed to cause no further instability in a slip failure. The mining industry, and in fact the world, has undergone significant changes in the past five to ten years, ranging from the metals boom, the global financial crisis and the rise and fall of national economies, to name just a few. There has been a focus on sustainable development for projects and operations in the mining industry, mainly pushed onto the industry by communities, governments and other agencies. While sustainable development and operation is a worthy priority for mining operations, discussions with mining industry personnel (with a strong slant on the mineral processing perspective) have shown other issues have surpassed the typical issues of water resources, energy availability and the environment. These include staff turnover and skills shortages, extracting metal from more complex orebodies and the uptake of new step-change technology.A number of key operating mineral processing personnel were interviewed to determine their perspective on the current issues facing the mining industry. "The paper introduces the structure and work processes of outside auger hollow claw tipped mechanical sampler for coal. Twenty sets of claw tipped sampler performance tests show that: The design of inner hollow cylinder-type (?180 mm) can ensure to take a coal sample with nominal top size of 60 mm. Built-in self-cleaning piston pusher ensures no adherence and blocking of the sample. The operation practices show that the mechanical sampler can operate in order for taking coal sample with up to 16 per cent of total moisture. Claw closing design can avoid sample leaking or spilling during the claw lifting and ensure the integrity of primary increment. Ultrasonic positioning device makes the sampler capture the materials no less than 10 cm from the bottom of the wagons, basically meeting the requirement taking full depth of the sample. The precision and bias test indicates that the moisture and ash have no relative bias under the sampling process; the sampling precision is in accordance with the requirement in IS013909.At present, the spiral mechanical sampler is widely used for coal sampling but there are many limitations during application, for example: It is difficult to capture a large size sample, so the size range of a coal sample taken is limited. There is easy adhering or blocking for high moisture coal, which will result in the mixture of different increments, wear of sampler and the difficulties for cleaning and maintenance of sampler. It is difficult to capture the coal sample at lower than 30 cm from the bottom of the wagons, in order to avoid damage of the vehicle. It is possible for coal sample loss and spilling during the sampler lifting, due to the unsealed sampler.For the outside auger hollow claw tipped mechanical sampler designed for solving the above problems, the opening distance of the claw is the opening size of the sampler and makes the size range of the coal sample to be taken wide. During sampling, the two pieces of claws open and the sampler rotates vertically downward to capture an adequate coal sample after reaching the specific point. Then the two pieces of claws close tight automatically to ensure there is no coal leaking or spilling. Carrapateena is a copper-gold sub level caving operation located in the Gawler Craton, South Australia. One of Australia’s largest undeveloped copper deposits, the project will be a 4.25 Mtpa underground operation, with an estimated mine life of 20 years (OZ Minerals, 2017). First concentrate production was achieved in December 2019, within the Iron Ore Copper Gold (IOCG) hematite breccia complex. The Carrapateena orebody is overlain by 500 m of barren sediments of the Stuart Shelf, which hosts two aquifers. The cover sequence is dominated by shales, quartzites and sandstones in order of thickness. The cover sequence presented challenges to the mine ventilation system as a result of highly variable rock strengths. On this basis, the site developed the first vent rise, Vent Rise 5 (VR5), earlier than required as a means to test the empirical stability assessment. Assessment for VR5 was completed in 2017, with the mine yet to develop through much of the cover sequence. Due to the geotechnical data available at the time, it was anticipated that break out would occur within the vent rise walls as a function of the low strength Woomera shales. VR5 was developed to 4.5 mᴓ in late 2018. The timing of the VR5 development enabled the site technical team to calibrate empirical stability factors for the assessment of future vent rises. At the time of writing, four additional vent rises have been successfully developed to a diameter of 5.5 m. No significant overbreak has been observed within any of the vent rises. This paper is intended for geotechnical practitioners designing large-diameter vent rises in geological environments similar to the Stuart Shelf where a similar approach to vent rise design may be warranted.

The East wall of the Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines Fimiston Open Pit (KCGM Superpit) has a history of wall instabilities impacting mining operations; the most significant of which occurred in May 2018, when more than 1 Mt of rock dislodged over six, 30 m high bench stacks and impacted the pit floor. Since 2011 approximately 1.250 Mt of material has fallen from the East wall at Fimiston Pit across three failure events (2011, 2018 and 2020). Each failure has been associated with major structures intersecting the pit walls: the Fiji Fault, the Australia East Secondary Splay Fault and the EWD3 Fault. In each instance the trigger for failure has been transient pore pressure in the pit walls. Northern Star will mine a cut back behind the failure area over a vertical distance of 180 m. Cut back mining will include the extraction of a remaining in situ wedge, which is assessed as kinematically able to fail, and a subvertical failure backscarp in Stage 1. A substantial amount of rill material from the 2018 and 2020 failures will be extracted in Stage 2. This paper presents the methodology in use to mine Stage 1 of the cut back, safely, through this potentially high-risk area, detailing the specific mining methodology employed, the controls put in place and the monitoring required. Day-to-day monitoring will be undertaken using the already installed slope stability radar and will feed into a daily assessment of activities which may be undertaken in the cut back area. Initial activities will focus on eliminating the potentially unstable wedge and vertical backscarp with use of innovative drill and blast techniques/products and the extensive use of remote capable equipment to limit personnel exposure.

The objective of this paper is to present the potential applications of geostatistical analyses in planning CPTu investigations, as well as interpolation of CPTu data. The paper presents a case study of a geostatistical analysis of CPTu data undertaken between 2004 and 2017 for an upstreamraised TSF located in the Goldfields region of Western Australia. An initial model is developed using the 2004, 2009 and 2017 CPTu data. The model is used to predict in situ cone tip resistance (qc) measurements, as the interested primary variable, at the selected locations where 2019 CPTu were undertaken, and the results of the prediction and the actual data are compared.

Ferrous chloride solution pyrohydrolysis is a successful IICI regeneration process which is carried out in either a spray roaster or a fluid bed. Pyrohydrolysis is not restricted to ferrous chloride only, every metal chloride can theoretically be hydrolysed. In practice, however, the conditions for ferrous chloride pyrohydrolysis differ from those of many non-ferrous metal chlorides eg zinc, lead and cadmium. Hence, a pyrohydrolyser could function as a ferrous/non-ferrous separator, eg an iron oxide and zinc chloride separator. Most pyrohydrolysers operate on solutions, in which case more than 50 per cent of the process energy is needed for heating and evaporating water. However, this disadvantage would be diminished by feeding a slurry to the reactor. Against this background it was decided to investigate the chloridisation of zinc ferrite which is an iron bearing solid with a non-ferrous impurity, and subject to processing and disposal problems. Synthetic zinc ferrite was chloridised in a tube furnace. The gas atmosphere in the tube furnace resembled that of a fluid bed pyrohydrolyser and consisted of HCI, 1120 and nitrogen. Gas composition, temperature, residence time and sample mass were varied. The experiments showed that complete (99.6 per cent) zinc extraction from synthetic zinc ferrite was possible in a simplified pyrohydrolyser atmosphere at 1100 K in four hours. The zinc ferrite was converted into gaseous zinc chloride, and hematite and magnetite solids. It was also found that zinc removal from the zinc ferrite lattice caused not only rccrystallisation of the zinc ferrite into hematite, but also hematite crystal

Gold production from The Granites - Tanami Goldfield during 1993 is expected to exceed 8 t, eclipsing that of the traditional Northern Territory gold mining districts of Tennant Creek and Pine Creek. This is the result of dedicated and successful exploration, and the consequent discovery of new orebodies such as those at Dead Bullock Soak.Following granting of access to regional exploration areas in 1988 and identification of favourable host rocks in the Schist Hills area, North Flinders Mines (NFM) began a methodical exploration program of detailed geological mapping, rock chip sampling, costeaning and various types of drilling. The first resource of 600 000 t of 3.3 g/t gold was announced in mid-1989. This has grown progressively with systematic exploration to the currently published resource inventory of 6.6 mT @ 5.4 g/t, (as at 31.12.92) contained in six separate orebodies within the Dead Bullock Soak Mineral Lease at Schist Hills.

The Twin Hills Gold Deposit is an example of a preserved, high level, epithermal system, with mineralisation introduced contemporaneous with deposition. The deposit is hosted within sediments of the Late Devonian to Early Carboniferous Saint Anns Formation, of Cycle 1 Drummond Basin stratigraphy, situated in central Queensland. Prior to epithermal activity in the Twin Hills region, a lacustrine fan delta depositional environment existed, together with minor tuffaceous activity. An and palaeo climate, with occasional periods of torrential rainfall, together with a basin with faulted margins, allowed alluvial fan prograda- tion. Cyclical repetitions of the fan indicate repeated faulting and seismic activity took place during deposition. Significant gold mineralisation was first intersected at Twin Hills by Metana Minerals NL in 1988, after drill testing a "blind" target outlined by geological mapping and bedrock geochemistry.

Surface oxidation of sulfide minerals, such as that found in the regions of a sulfide ore body near the water table, can have a significant impact upon flotation. This theme has been explored for Merensky ore type sulfides where an ore containing pyrrhotite, pentlandite and chalcopyrite was thermally oxidised and the role of potential remedies investigated. Back-scattered scanning electron microscope images are presented showing the oxidation layer which formed in the mineral surfaces. These oxidation layers were depleted in both sulfur and iron with incorporated oxygen. Flotation recovery rapidly decreased with increasing oxidation, particularly after 27 days and reached a plateau after 50 days. Up to 27 days, this effect could be partially overcome with higher collector additions. Oxidation had more impact upon the finer size fractions, particularly for pyrrhotite. For more heavily surface oxidised samples, ultrasonic treatment prior to collector conditioning was found to improve flotation recoveries. This treatment had the greatest effect upon chalcopyrite particles. Sulfidisation was successful in restoring the flotation recovery of the heavily oxidised sulfide minerals. Longer sulfidisation conditioning times were not conducive to good flotation recoveries of both oxidised pyrrhotite and pentlandite due to oxidation of the freshly formed sulfide surfaces. For maximum flotation recoveries of oxidised pyrrhotite, pentlandite and chalcopyrite, different sulfidisation conditions are indicated. It appears likely that in a mineral processing operation treating oxidised Merensky type ores, two stages of sulfidisation employing different conditions would be required.

The Boddington Gold Mine, operated by Worsley Alumina Pty Ltd, is located about 100 km south of Perth and is one of the largest-producing gold mines in Australia.Multiple open pits are planned and several extend below the water table, through the deeply weathered lateritic profile and into the underlying Archean bedrock. Groundwater related mining problems, such as poor trafficability, wet floor conditions and slope instability began to occur early in 1990.The mine is located within Archean greenstones which are steeply dipping and faulted. Rock types include mafic to felsic volcanics, pyroclastics and sediments. These rocks have been regionally deformed and metamorphosed and are intruded by quartz micro-diorites and post-mineralisation dolerite dykes. Deep weathering has produced a typical oxide profile consisting of laterite, clay and saprolite zones underlain by weathered to fresh bedrock.

The need to solve the problems associated with spontaneous combustion, system of ventil- ation and methane drainage in gassy coal mines has brought about the development of mining and degassing methods which has made possible up to 80% gas recovery in retreating longwalls. Beneficial results also were obtained mostly in the double or multiple-entry systems, but for single-entry systems and for a seam thickness exceeding 3 m, gas recovery rate is still very low. With some single-heading systems, such as those where a return roadway is not maintained in the goaf behind the face line, a new methane drainage technology is practiced. Attempts were made to extract methane from roof holes drilled from offsets in the ribside of the longwall block. The inclinations and lengths of the boreholes were planned and designed on the basis of the geological and mining condit- ions encountered at the time and every second hole was terminated precisely at the point where the previous hole intersected the immed- iate roof goaf area above the face. There are mathematical relations approp- riate to the design of the above drainage systems to give optimum methane recovery under the given conditions. Some examples of drainage have reached 87% recovery and have attained 94% CH4 purity.

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. The Baizhangzi gold deposit is located in the northern North China Craton. The structural and lithological controls on the location and geometry of orebodies were studied through geologic survey, ore spatial configuration analysis and structural analysis. The orebodies of the deposit comprise auriferous quartz-sulfide veins and disseminated gold-bearing sulfides. The auriferous quartz-sulfide veins are dominantly hosted by the NNE- (and NE- and NW-) trending faults, which are subsidiary structures of the regional NNE-trending F2 fault. The subsidiary NNE-trending faults, having sinistral reverse kinematics, are associated with the sinistral reverse kinematics event of the F2 fault, which happened under a regional S–N-oriented compression stress field. The subsidiary NE- and NW-trending faults appear to be compressive and extensional respectively. These NE- (and NW-) trending faults are restricted to the granite intrusion and are associated with a sinistral strike-slip event of the F2 fault, which reactivated under a NW–SE-oriented compression stress field. It makes significant influence on geological evolution and distribution of different ore types that the strike of the F2 fault presents significant transition from NNE- to NE-trending in vertical. The ore-bearing disseminated host rocks, with widespread silicification and pyritisation, distribute in the lower inner contact zone of the granite intrusion, especially in the lower wavelike boundary of granite intrusion.CITATION:Xiong, L, Wei, J H and Shi, W J, 2015. In primary copper smelters, the received copper concentrate and other materials contain a certain amount of moisture, ranging from six to 14 per cent. Moisture in wet concentrate has a negative effect on the performance of the smelting furnaces when it is fed directly to the furnaces, namely increasing the energy consumption and the off-gas flow. There are several drying technologies available for drying copper concentrate, varying from direct heated rotary dryers and flash dryers to indirect heated steam dryers. Application of steam dryers has changed the drying process for copper smelters. Produced from a waste heat boiler, steam as heating medium enables plant-wide heat utilisation. Fossil fuel used from outside sources to remove water is no longer required and the combustion chamber is not required. In addition special attention has been paid to overcome the known problems of pollution emissions, excessive wear, clogging and frequent maintenance. The Kumera steam dryer is featured with many advantages based on principal improvements in reducing tube element wear and increasing drying efficiency. Thus, it has been considered as the first choice for those smelters where steam is available.
