At Tamano Smelter, part of the furnace settler is electrically heated by electrodes placed internally. This practice provides good control of the settler conditions. The authors have been investigating improvements in furnace operations, especially to decrease the copper content in the slag discarded from the settler. The important operational points on the control of magnetite in liquid matte and slag are discussed on the basis of the thermodynamic calculation method developed by Prof. S. Goto. The behaviour of magnetite in the practical furnace has been studied by using a torsion magnetometer and a solid electrolyte oxygen-sensing cell.

The successful processing of arsenopyritic ores is difficult and will be facilitated by a better understanding of the mineralogy of gold within arsenopyrite and the type of arsenopyrite in which gold is taken up. Solid solution gold in arsenopyrite is now well documented, and is a significant cause of refractory behaviour in gold processing. Investigations of the crystal structure and stoichiometry of arsenopyrite by X-ray diffraction, electron microprobe analysis and convergent beam electron microscopy have been carried out in order to understand how the gold is incorporated into the structure. Variations in stoichiometry, particularly the As:S ratio, of arsenopyrite leads to variations in structural parameters. These variations result in slight changes in thermal behaviour. The distribution of invisible gold in an arsenopyrite grain is generally non-uniform and synthesised samples contain up to 2 wt per cent gold. A transmission electron microscopy (TEM) technique called ALCHEMI is being used to identify the substitution site. The process of gold agglomeration together with evidence of an ordered breakdown of arsenopyrite to pyrrhotite has been documented with the use of TEM. An arsenopyrite grain containing invisible gold was heated with an electron beam resulting in recrystallisation of arsenopyrite to pyrrhotite with arsenic being expelled. The gold is mostly insoluble in the pyrrhotite lattice and therefore exsolves out and combines with other gold atoms to form droplets at the boundary of the pyrrhotite.

In 1979, a test operation of an experimental blast furnace was carried out to investigate the behavior of a sort of formed coke, which was used safely by 30% of total coke charge in No.2 B.F., Sakai works, NSC, in 1975". The Mashec-type formed coke of 60 x 60 x 40 mm in dimension was crushed and screened so that it had the same size range (1011,20 mm) as ordinary coke used in the base operation. Preceding to the operation, some experiments on the properties of the formed coke and the effects of crushing on them were performed.

May I, at the very outset of this second gathering, congratulate the Institute on the great progress that has been made in the interval. At the first meeting in New Zealand in the year 1903, I understand that less than 20 persons were present, and now in the large concourse before me I believe there are not fewer than 140 persons, while if every member of the Institute to-day where here there would be over 500 which is a great change from a membership of only 250 in 1903. I feel deeply appreciative of the honour you have conferred upon me by electing me your President for the year 1911. The detailed work done by Stillwell and Edwards on the occurrence of cobaltite and safilorite-Iollingite at the South Mine, followed by its presentation as a paper to the Institute, calls for, a few notes on its occurrence elsewhere in the Broken Hill field. No massive cobaltite similar to that in the South Mine veinlet is known except from the Consols Mine (as mentioned in the paper). Fine grained cobaltite has, however, been found in low-grade ore from the North Mine. Microscopic grains occur in a mineralized green feldspar pegmatite. The feldspar has been replaced in part by graphite, and the cobaltite occurs in association with the graphite. In its hardness, pinkish-white colour, and resistance to the standard etchingqeagents it is similar to the South Mine cobaltite; it is etched by acid permanganate solution. An interesting feature of this occurrence is the way in- which some of the minerals (notably galena) have forced apart the graphite lamellae in crystallizing, forming lenses enclosed by the curved cleavage surlaces 0;[ the graphite.StillwelI and Edwards cite a note by G. Smitht for the statement that "cobaltite has been recorded from the Australian Broken Hill Consols Lode in the vicinity of the rich silver deposits, though not in contact with them."Smith, however, is here referring to the oxidized zone. Elsewhere in the same article he states "... a deposit of cobaltite in a very much altered condition was found. This was impregnated with silver, and assayed as high as 3,000 ounces," Of the cobaltite in the unoxidized zone, Smith simply states that it became rarer with depth.Cobaltite has also been recognized by Mr. H. F. Whitworth, M.SC., Curator of the Mining Museum, Sydney, in specimens from Burt's Copper Mine eight miles south of Broken Hill.

Unplanned dilution has the potential to seriously undermine the economic viability of a mine, and in some cases results in mine closure. The effect of stress damage on dilution has become increasingly relevant as mining depths increase. In the case of narrow vein mining, the incremental extraction of long-hole rings has the potential to result in a moving high stressed zone at the stope brow. This leads the hanging wall and footwall to experience a spike in the stress to strength ratios as the brow passes. In some cases, the stress to strength ratio may be high enough to result in fracturing or damage to the rock mass. The aim of the study described in this paper was to investigate whether stress damage results in a significant increase in dilution. The study involved analysis of overbreak from 410 case studies from the Kundana Gold mine in Western Australia. Site personnel had already undertaken calibration studies of the stress levels that result in rock mass damage. This calibration, in conjunction with numerical modelling showed that stress damaged stope walls at this mine had on average 50 per cent more overbreak than stope walls where stresses had not exceeded the damage criterion. For a design mining width of 1.5 metres, and with both walls impacted, this represents 36 per cent increase in dilution. After adjustment for possible sources of bias the difference reduced to an average 0.10 metres per stope wall, representing 13 per cent dilution for the mining width under consideration. The potential for stress damage related overbreak should therefore be considered as part of any assessment of narrow vein dilution.

Garnierite mineralogy in saprolitic ore of the Goro lateritic nickel deposit, New Caledonia , was investigated using X-ray diffraction (XRD), optical and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and electron microprobe (EMP) analyses. These conspicuously, green-coloured phases occur either as submillimetre to centimetresized veins or as æbookletsÆ arranged in, macroscopic (subcentimetre sized), accordionlike structures supported in an undifferentiated matrix of mixed ÿ7+ and ÿ10+ phases. Within the veins, nickel for Mg solid solution increased from ten wt per cent NiO at the edge to 34 wt per cent NiO at the core, with vein edges comprising Ni-kerolite with <1.5 Ni per formula unit (pfu) grading to pimelite containing >1.5 Ni pfu at vein cores. The æbookletsÆ comprised nTpouite of formula, (Mg0.67Ni1.59Fe3+0.05)(Si2.17Al0.22)O5(OH)4 and averaged 30 per cent NiO. SEM element mapping highlighted the distribution and mineralogical association of Ni and Mg and emphasised the inverse relationship between Ni and Mg at the macroscopic (thin-section) scale. This paper is based on the technology and functionality of a Modular Mining IntelliMINE« system which is a real-time decision-making tool. The IntelliMINE« system, incorporating Dispatch, is a fully Integrated Mine Management System. Measuring, quantifying and analysing the performance of mining is considered a fundamental and strategic step towards changing the nature of technical and operational decision-making at the majority of international mining corporations. Successful implementation of electronic data capture devices and computerised tools have enabled many mining operations to improve their competitive position with an improvement in the utilisation of the key assets, mineral resources, capital mining equipment and human resources. Real Time Mine Management Systems are designed to direct the emphasis away from collecting data and focus decision makers on the real issues with well-presented and reliable information. The systems provide a common stream of information to enable senior management, operations, maintenance, technical and process plant staff to make complementary decisions based on reliable, accurate and timely data. The mine asset information tools focus all employees on performance and give them feedback on their area of responsibility. The resulting tangible benefits can be delivered in different forms depending on the mining method, ore type, workplace culture and the current competitive position. Typical areas of improvement reported by system users are:reduction in capital expenditure on mining equipment fleets; more effective planning and budgeting parameters and procedures; increased control over ore-extraction and processing; increased employee accountability and organisational performance; and improved co-ordination between planning, operations, maintenance and processing. These improvements can be delivered in different forms depending on the status of the mine and commodity markets. In times of market oversupply and low commodity prices, the benefits can be delivered to the bottom line in terms of reduced cash costs, reduced capital and operating resources to maintain constant production. In times of market expansion, existing capital resources will be more productive delivering increased production and revenue. Mine management systems have the potential to transform a traditional mine operation into a learning organisation with an improved understanding of the critical performance issues and enable development of relevant strategies to continually identify and eliminate operational inefficiencies. The effectiveness of each strategy and operational change can be accurately monitored and its success (or otherwise) will be quantified. The latest downturn in the world metal prices has forced many mining companies to focus on cost reduction and productivity improvements as a means of remaining competitive. Maintenance represents a significant proportion of the overall operating costs in the mining industry. A structured proactive maintenance approach such as Reliability Centered Maintenance (RCM) can achieve significant cost reductions and productivity improvements. Remote condition monitoring systems are becoming increasingly commonplace and have the potential to identify problems prior to failure. Detection of equipment degradation prior to failure will enable repairs to be scheduled, thereby reducing costs and interruptions to production.

Palaeomagnetic work on the red beds of the Hervey Group from central N.S.W., and on the Mount Eclipse Sandstone from the Ngalia Basin, Central Australia, reveals a pre-deformational magnetization from the Hervey Group, which indicates a semi-equatorial palaeolatitude during the latest Devonian or earliest Carboniferous and a syn-deformational magnetization from the Mount Eclipse Sandstone which places Australia at a palaeolatitude of about 70¦ ¦ 20¦S during the early Late Carboniferous. By comparison with the existing data from Australia, the new results indicate that: (1) Australia (and thus eastern Gondwanaland) underwent a rapid southward movement of about 60¦ during the late Early and early Late Carboniferous, (2) the Lachlan Fold Belt has been part of cratonic Australia since at least latest Devonian or earliest Carboniferous, and (3) the New England region and cratonic Australia were at a similar palaeolatitude during earliest Carboniferous, but they may have undergone the rapid southward movement separately.

The San Cristobal gold district is located 110 km east of the port of Antofagasta, Chile. It contains the San Cristobal gold mine, where Niugini Mining Ltd. commenced a heap leach operation, with initial reserves of 10.1 million tonnes grading 1.34 g/t An, in December, 1990. The San Cristobal district occurs within an upper Cretaceous-lower Tertiary magmatic arc. The main mineralisation occurs within a northwest trending subvertical zone, 1km long and 70-100 m wide, which contains rhyolite porphyry and minor breccia, and is locally termed the "subvolcanic complex". At the San Cristobal mine, most gold mineralisation occurs in subvertical quartz-pyrite veins which were emplaced in dilational sections of an imbricate fault system. The bulk gold resource comprises four ore shoots which formed where the vein system intersects the subvolcanic complex. Gold-bearing quartz-pyrite veins also occur at separate prospects, the Three Sisters and Sol prospects, west and south of the San Cristobal mine. Hydrothermal alteration consists of potassic and propylitic assemblages related to intrusion of the subvolcanic complex. This alteration is overprinted by a phyllic stage which is associated with the emplacement of the quartz-pyrite veins. The oxide zone is 180 m thick, and contains native gold, electrum, limonite, and manganocarbonates. The underlying hypogene zone contains pyrite with minor chalcopyrite, sphalerite, galena, covellite, bornite, chalcocite, and arsenopyrite. Fluid inclusion studies indicate that the deposit formed at approximately 270¦ C, and the mean salinity of the fluid was 4% NaCl equivalent. These observations enable the San Cristobal deposit to be classed as a porphyry-related, mesothermal quartz-vein system of the low sulphidation type.

Indonesia has the largest coal reserves in the south-east Asian region. According to estimates from the World Energy Confer- ence, it has reserves of 18 billion mt lignite, 4.4 billion mt sub-bituminous coal and 774 million mt bituminous coal (Wyllie,1988). In recent years, substitution of coal for oil in power plants has been the goal of the Indonesian government since proven deposits of coal are about five times as large as national hydrocarbon reserves and most of Indonesia's power stations are still oil fired. Recently a coal fired power plant has been built in Java Barat, which will have a full capacity of about 3000 MW. It is intended to supply coal for this power plant from Bukit Asam mining area (South Sumatra). Coals from Bukit Asam - which are of the lignite or brown coal type - usually contain considerable moisture . It should be noted that reference to moisture in coal pertains to the total moisture content. This is comprised of what is commonly termed as equilibrium moisture and surface moisture. Surface moisture typically affects combustion process as well as pulveriser performance since it possibly influences the relative ease with which coal may be ground. In practice, the surface moisture produces agglomeration of the fines in the pulverising zone and reduces pulveriser drying capacity because of the inability to remove the fines as quickly as they are produced. This agglomeration has also the same effect as coarse coal during the combustion process because the surface area available for the chemical reaction is reduced, hence the combustion efficiency is also reduced. The influence of the moisture of some coals on their grindability (Hardgrove Grindability Index) has been previously correlated by several authors; some of them will be mentioned later. Those correlations, however, could not be immediately applied to any coal since it is still believed that there are other factors which influence the grindability of the coal, such as type and rank of the coal. The relationship between coal moisture content and its grindability has been investigated by Ellmann and Belter (1955). It was found that, for North Dakota lignites, the grindability varied as the moisture content changed. In Britain, Fitton, Hughes and Hurley (1957) stated that, for Bilsthorpe coal, over a wide range of free moisture content (from air-dried to about 30 per cent moisture), the Hardgrove Grindability Index (HGI) remains virtually unchanged. In addition to that, it was suggested that it would be slightly advantageous to dry the coal below its air-dried moisture content (at temperature ¦ 100¦C) to increase the ease with which coal could be ground, especially for low-volatile coal and high-volatile non-caking coal. Furthermore, it was also concluded that a broad relationship appeared between coal rank and Grindability.

Studies of the minor element content of sphalerite and pyrite have generally been concerned with individual deposits or localised groups of deposits. However, a small number of more regional investigations have been reported (e.g. Davidson, 1962; Groves and Loftus-Hills, 1968; Loftus-Hills and Solomon, 1967; Price, 1972; Bralia et al., 1979) which have used the minor element abundances to evaluate the petrogenesis and geological affinities of diverse ore types and to fingerprint metallogenic provinces (e.g. Ivanov, 1964). While generally held to be valid, some doubts have nevertheless been cast on the reliability of minor element abundances in petrogenetic deliberations (e.g. Mercer, This paper reports on the distribution of he. Cpl and Mn in sphalerite, and Co, Ni and Mn in pyrite, from sulphide mineral occurrences within the "eugeosynclinal" prism comprising the New England Region of north-eastern New South Wales and south- eastern Queensland (Fig. 1). The occurrences examined are representative of two well-defined styles of mineralisation (Stanton et al., 1974) within which clear patterns of ore-rock distribution give rise to specific metal associations (Herbert. 1977).

the results of an experimental study aimed at beneficiating a complex ore containing bastnaesite and other rare-earth minerals, with associated barite and fluospar are illustrated. Owing to its minero-petrographic, physico-mechanical and structural characteristics, the crude ore is not amenable to classic concentration methods, such as flotation, magnetic and gravity separation. Therefore the technical feasibility of selective disintegration followed by size classification has been studied, whereby bastnaesite and the other rare-earth minerals can be concentrated into the finest size fractions. Leaching and subsequent extraction of rare-earth metals by liquid-liquid separation represents the final stage of beneficiation.

The colliery is owned by the BHP Collieries Proprietary Ltd., the principal shareholders being the Broken Hill Pty. Company Ltd. and Hebburn Limited.It is situated due west of Newcastle and 6 south-east of Cessnock, N.S.W., and is conneeted by 36 miles of railway to the port of Neweastle. Of this mileage, 3 miles are owned by the Company, 3 by Hebburn Limited, 9 by the South Maitland Railways Ltd., and 21miles by the Government Railways.The seam worked is known as the Main Greta Seam of the Greta Coal Measures and is on the southern slope of the Lochinvar anticline.At the shaft, the seam is 1190 ft. below the surface, and the section of the coal measures is:-Upper or Main Seam, . 24 ft. 0 in.Conglomerate and shale 70 ft. 0 in.'Middle Seam 8 in.Conglomerate 25 ft. 0 in,Bottom Seam 1 ft. 2 in.These lie between two marine measures, and are the lower coal series of the permo-carboniferous period.Only the upper seam is workable in this area, the lower seams being too thin for eompetitive working. The section of the workable seam at the shafts is as shown on Fig. 1.Unfortunately, only the lower 12 ft. 5 in. of the seam is saleable.

The Palaeozoic rocks of north-eastern Laos are an attractive target for gold explorers due to the complex tectonic history and lack of past exploration in the region. Alluvial workings along the Nam Xiang River and its tributaries have highlighted the potential for gold mineralisation in the Vieng Kham region. The Nam Xiang River follows a regionally-extensive NNE-striking thrust fault. Adjacent to the Nam Xiang fault, the dip of the main foliation steepens, and in many places the stratigraphy is overturned as a result of this faulting.United Minerals and Mining Company conducted a regional exploration program to explore for gold. This included stream sediment and rock-chip sampling, and airborne geophysics. Geochemical anomalies were followed up with more detailed exploration, including geological mapping and soil sampling. Despite the relatively deep weathering profile, gold mineralisation is associated with a low-level but well-defined gold-in-soil anomaly. Drilling has shown that gold mineralisation occurs on structures and fabrics parallel to the main Nam Xiang fault. The highest gold grades are associated with brecciated sandstones that have experienced strong carbonate alteration. This suggests that late-stage structures such as the Nam Xiang fault are the major control on gold mineralisation in the region.CITATION:Greentree, M, Cunningham, M J M and Liu, J H, 2015. Four field test plots were constructed in 1998 on a sloped waste rock surface at the Myra Falls Operations of Boliden Westmin (Canada) Limited to evaluate hydraulic performance of alternate cover system designs. The field test plot cover systems were designed to control oxygen ingress and water infiltration to the underlying waste rock while providing a medium for a grass and legume vegetation cover. The test plots consisted of a bare waste rock surface (control plot), and three additional plots consisting of native compacted till placed directly on the waste rock surface, overlain by non-compacted till. Two of the test plots included a compacted till layer ameliorated with flyash and bentonite, respectively, to improve moisture retention and reduce permeability. The third test plot consisted of a compacted layer of native till overlain by non-compacted till. A performance monitoring system was installed in each test plot to evaluate net percolation and oxygen ingress to the underlying waste rock. In addition, each test plot has profiles of matric suction, water content, and temperature sensors installed at up-slope and down slope locations. A review of four years of monitoring data shows that the compacted till/bentonite cover system has been most successful in limiting the infiltration of meteoric waters and oxygen ingress to the underlying waste rock material. The compacted till/flyash and compacted till cover systems have produced similar net percolation results and neither have functioned well in maintaining an oxygen ingress layer throughout the year. The amelioration of bentonite with till to produce a compacted barrier layer shows promise in reducing water and oxygen ingress at the MFO site, while the incorporation of flyash with the till did not result in a significant increase in performance. The field performance data clearly demonstrates the need for developing field trials prior to full-scale construction, as opposed to relying solely on an un-calibrated numerical modelling to design the full-scale cover system.

The seam gas content at Westcliff Colliery is 12-15m3/tonne of coal.Composition ranges from 99% CH4 to 52% C02 in one area. Desorption rates are proportional to gas contents and CH4 is preferentially desorbed. A crushed zone of reduced permeability advances with the face - at Westcliff ribside crushed zones are 2.5 to 6.5m wide. Poor strata control widens crushed zones. 12 months of pre-drainage allowed 2 heading development and longer pillars to be used in a virgin area instead of 3 or more headings without drainage. Machined coal may lose as much as 1.6m3/tonne being conveyed out of Westcliff Colliery. Experience differs from mine to mine. Permeation is affected by time, strata movements, changing water content, and changing stress. Permeabilities vary from lOmd for Pittsburgh Seam to less than 1 and for the Bulli Seam. All these data and differences await further investigation.

Key blocks occur on the surface of excavations and on the walls of the ornamental stones and limestone quarries due to the formation of joint planes, fissures, microfaults and quarrying operations. Movements of these key blocks have produced numerous important failures and are responsible for routine overbreak and rock falls accounting for great costs. The thrust of this work is to demonstrate how to delimit zones of poten- tial key blocks (danger zones) in the wall of Bani-Khalid quarry of lime- stone by using the block theory technique (stereographic projection). The final result of this study indicated that, there are three potential key blocks, the most critical one has been determined. To treat the problem, we sug- gest either to provide timely support to prevent the movement of this block, or to analyze it further in hopes that available friction on the faces will hold it safely in place.

Gold mineralization belt of eastern China in the adjacent part of the northwestern Pacific rim is orientated NE to NNE and as-sociated with Mesozoic faults and igneous intrusives and Mesozoic to Cenozoic volcanism and subvolcanism extending more than 3000 km in length and 300 to 800 kni in width affected by the movement from the Pacific Plate subducted against the Asian Plate.The relative movement between the Pacific and the Asian plates give rise to two types of fracture zones, the tensional ones providing the space for the formation of fissure-filling type of auriferous quartz veins and the shear zones providing the space for the formation of hydrothermal replacement type of gold de-posits in Shandong Peninsula. The fissure filling type of quartz vein, is represented by Linglong gold deposit which is hosted in Mesozoic Linglong Granite and consists of hundreds of quartz veins filling fractures trending NE to NNE and the hydrothermal replacement type is represented by Sanshandao gold deposit which is hosted in crushed and hydrothermally altered Mesozoic Linglong Granite in contact with Archaean metamorphic complex of Jiaodong Group along a Mesozoic upthust fault zone trending NE.

The satisfactory testing and characterisation of mineralisation amenable to heap leaching, is of prime importance to successful operation of a project. This paper outlines a methodology for assessing material suitability. A general model is used for classing material types for suitability for treatment and for economic analysis. The four levels of these are overburden, oxide, transitional and unoxidised materials. During exploration, reverse circulation (RC) drilling can be used effectively to define these zones by a combination of logging, analysis and provision of cuttings for column leach and bottle roll trials. RC cuttings can he used effectively for column leach trials, when calibrated against conventional processing-sized samples, obtained from surface. Tbis allows metallurgical testing to depth and definition of transitional ore types and the base of oxidation, accurately and economically with an acceptable density of samples. The accurate prediction of base of oxidation and variations in recovery with depth and ore types can be used to develop 'economic' pit designs with zones of variable recovery. Petrological studies of leaching results and examination of mineralisation types carried out on concentrates, provide information on gold distribution and physical and chemical constraints. The examination of concentrates can be particularly useful for types of mineralisation when overall gold content is frequently at or below one pan per million. Explanation of anomalous recovery of gold grains in dense goethite and solution-robbing by carbonaceous material can be identified by use of petrological and scanning electron microscope. An understanding of the role of the host rock in leaching characteristics can also he provided by petrology where siliceous or clayey materials can require significantly different treatment.
