Geotechnical investictations and monitoring have been integral to development of the Porgera Gold Mine. The steep, unstable terrain has required a program for monitoring of slopes and foundations which includes survey stations, borehole inclinometers and piezometers. Case studies of the Maip Pass landslide, Yakatabari land-slide, Anawe Plant Site CIP pond excavation and batter, and a load test study for mine waste dumps are presented.Monitoring is needed to ensure that geotechnical risk is kept to a minimum. A vigilant program will be required for the life of the mine.

The Western Desert of Egypt is a part of the arid Great Sahara of Africa which extends from the Nile Valley in the east to the Atlantic Ocean in the west. It is covered by a sedimentary sequence of Mezozoic and Teriary rocks. Recently this part of the country (about 65% of its surface area) has attracted an increasing attention in the plan of finding new agricultural and industrial communities outside the crowded Nile Valley. The plan aims to reduce the high population density in the narrow Nile Valley and to cover a considerable part of the increasing food demands in the country of Egypt. Accordingly, the groundwater exploration work in the Western Desert has been remarkably increased in the last decade, however it is still limited compared with the vast area of the Desert. The present work is a part of the groundwater exploration in the 6th October City, a new community located at 40kms west of Cairo. The rock exposures belong to a sedimentary stratigraphic section starting from the Cretaceous in the east to the Pliocene in the west. The Cretaceous outcrops due east are attributed to an almost N-S uplift and forms a thick massive limestone plateau which separates the present area from the Nile Valley. The Teriary section in the west have alternations of different porous formations such as the sands and sandstones which may acquire a good potentiality of groundwater resources. The previous groundwater exploration work included combined geological and geophysical investigations followed by exploration drilling. Although the area lies directly to the west of the Nile Valley, the discovered groundwater is saline and located at deeper reserviores compared with the groundwater in the Nile Valley. This groundwater was described as marine fossile water by the oil companies working in the Western Desert. From the geological point of view, it is believed that the Cretacious massive limestone plateau, in the east, roots to a depth which far exceeds the groundwater levels in the Nile Valley and acts as an impervious barrier between the aquifers in the Nile Valley and the area under investigations.

ATTENTION has recently been directed to the subject of dust production and methods of allaying same in the Broken Hill mines, so that the time would seem opportune for the local branch of the Institute to discuss certain features of an important phase of the health question in connection with underground work. Tests conducted in the Broken Hill South mine and at other mines at Broken Hill have shown that the ordinary operatioils of mining, such as boring, blasting, and shovelling, may be accompanied by the production of considerable dust unless water is judiciously used.In South Africa·dust particles under 5 microns size are regarded as dangerous, becailse they are so small as to be invisible to the naked eye, and wm esc'ape the protections set up by nature in the nose and throat, and thus may be inhaled in large quantity. A micron is 1 25000th part of an inch. This paper contains an account of the work done on the Broken Hill South mine chiefly, though some tests were done on other local mines.An acknowledgment is due to Mr. T. A. A pyritic gold concentrate from the Golden Mile, Kalgoorlie, was roasted over a range of temperatures in a pilot scale fluid bed reactor. The calcines were subsequently cyanide leached. Mineralogical studies of the con- centrate, calcines and leached residues were also undertaken. Calcines produced at 500'C gave the poorest gold extractions and high cyanide consumptions. Gold recoveries of approximately 90 per cent were obtained from calcines produced at 550-600'C but higher roasting tempera- tures resulted in an increase in the residual gold content of the leached calcine. There is some evidence of flash smelting of the pyrite at the higher roasting temperatures and encapsulation of gold particles. Mineralogical examination of the calcines shows that the mechanism of oxidation is temperature dependent. At 500'C pyrite is directly oxidized to hematite with a concentric layered texture which appears to inhibit lixiviant access to enclosed gold particles. At higher temperatures the conversion sequence pyrite-pyrrhotite-hematite produces a spongy calcine which al- lows easier penetration by the leaching medium.

The discovery of nickel sulphide deposits at Kambalda in 1966 heralded the development of ò an industry with a capital value of over $1.5 billion producing about 10% of the western world's nickel. ò an unprecedented exploration boom in which over $200 mil- lion was expended in 10 years in the search for nickel deposits. ò a major new class of nickel deposits stimulating exploration for similar deposits overseas. and rapidly propelled a struggling small mining and exploration company to become one of Australia's corporate giants, provid- ing a much-needed stimulus to economic activity in a region suffering from a severe downturn in its principal industry, gold mining. Production of nickel in Western Australia commenced at Kam- balda in 1967 and grew rapidly to a rate of over 30,000 t of con- tained nickel per annum in 1970, 40,000 t in 1973 and 50,000 t in 1975. Early production was aided by a shortage of nickel on the world market due to disruption of supply from the major Canadian producers, resulting in high free market prices for the metal. Since these early years, the industry has experienced a number of cycles of indifferent health due principally to market developments overseas, although the level of production of nickel in Western Australia remained fairly consistent. The two most serious of these, in 1977-8 and 1985-6, forced the closure of a number of mines. Current nickel prices are allowing remaining producers to enjoy a measure of relative prosperity, although there is little general speculation that this will be long-lived. Nickel deposits discovered in the exploration boom were almost exclusively related to ultramafic rocks. Volcanic peridotite (komatiite)-associated deposits, exemplified by the Kambalda ore- bodies, were the targets of initial exploration which was concen- trated on ultramafic sequences near lower stratigraphic contacts with underlying mafic rocks. Subsequently, discoveries made in coarse-grained dunites in interpreted intrusive settings broadened the search parameters.

Since 1969, a substantial number of geophysical methods have been applied in the search for porphyry copper and mesothermal type -sulpha-de deposits. These have assisted with geological mapping as well as the definition of various sulphide depos-its. The application of these methods at the Frieda-Nena deposits, Papua New Guinea, can be used as a case study for exploration in other parts of New Guinea.In 1993, Highlands Gold Limited carried out an intensive geophysical program over the Nena deposit. The methods employed included, CSAMT (controlled-source audio magneto-tellurics), airborne and ground elect-romagnetics, IP/resistivity and ground magnetics. The magnetic method was used as a regional mapping tool as well as a way of mapping alteration zones over both the Nena and Frieda River copper deposits. Electromagnetics, in part-icular FLAIRTEM, is a rapid reconn-aissance tool as well as a detailed mapping tool for the location of Nena-style massive sulphide deposits. IP/ resistivity is an expensive but most useful tool for mapping out Frieda porphyry copper style disseminated sulphides as well as Nena style deposits. The Barra Mine was the most significant mine of Australia's earliest mining era, which took place in South Australia between 1841 and 1851, the decade prior to discovery of gold in eastern Australia. Between 1845 and 1860, Barra was the largest metalliferous mine in Australia and employed up to 1000 men and boys, most of them Cornish.""Today the site is also important in a physical and archaeological sense as it contains extensive remains of mining and processing operations of the period 1850 - 70. Most significant are three cnginchouses which housed Cornish beam engines.

Cable bolts and rock bolts are used as primary and secondary anchoring systems in many underground mines. Reports on the premature failure of cable bolts and rock bolts due to stress corrosion cracking (SCC) in underground coalmines have been increasing in the past two decades. The previous studies found that the SCC in both rock bolts and cable bolts occur as a consequence of atomic hydrogen diffusion into the material, which is known as hydrogen-induced stress corrosion cracking, HISCC (Craig et al, 2016; Wu et al, 2018b). While research to understand the process of SCC occurrence in underground mines is still required, finding a prevention solution to protect the bolts from HISCC is crucial. In this study, we analyse a variety of commercially available coatings for steel corrosion prevention, including barrier coating (ie epoxy, polyester TGIC) and sacrificial coating (hot-dip galvanising). We test the coating on coupons manufactured from rock bolts and cable bolts used in the coal mining industry.

Many ore reserves are harvested by a combination of open pit and underground mining methods. In these cases, there is often material that could be mined by either method, and a choice has to be made. The area containing this material is referred to as the transition zone. Deciding where to finish the open pit and start the underground mine is referred to as the transition problem and it has received some attention in the literature since the 1980s.In this paper, we provide a review of existing approaches to the transition problem encompassing: graph theory-based optimisation employing an opportunity cost approach, heuristics and integer programming. The conventional CaO-SiO2-based mould fluxes are not suitable for high-Al steel casting because of the strong reaction between silica in the flux and aluminium in the steel strand. In the process of casting of high-Al steel, flux composition changes; with the decrease of the silica concentration and increase of alumina. Knowledge and understanding of the effect of the Al2O3/SiO2 ratio on flux structure and properties are useful for flux design for the high Al-steel continuous casting. This paper investigated the effect of the Al2O3/SiO2 ratio on structure, viscosity, phase composition of fluxes quenched at different temperatures and heat transfer of CaO-Al2O3-SiO2-B2O3-Na2O-Li2OMgO- F fluxes. It was found that flux melting temperature increased with the increase in Al2O3/SiO2 ratio. Viscosity of the flux melts increased significantly with the increase of the Al2O3/SiO2 ratio from 0.7 to 1.2, reaching the maximum value, and then decreased with further increase of the Al2O3/SiO2 ratio. Raman spectroscopy analysis revealed that the change of the Al2O3/SiO2 ratio led to the change of aluminate and silicate structural units. The turning point for viscosity was attributed to the change in the degree of flux polymerisation. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis showed that increasing Al2O3/SiO2 ratio increased crystallisation tendency of the fluxes. Heat transfer measurement by infrared emitter technique (IET) revealed that increasing Al2O3/SiO2 ratio led to the decrease in heat flux which is correlated well with the increased crystallinity of the flux. The results suggested that the flux with Al2O3/SiO2 ratio 4.3 is the best candidate among the studied CaO-Al2O3-based mould fluxes for casting of high-Al steel.

This paper deals with the modernisation of the brakes on an electrically coupled Blair multi-rope hoist and covers the removal of the old calliper brakes and hydraulic control system, and its replacement with brake discs, disc braking units and hydraulic control systems. The paper covers the braking requirements of the hoist, which is made up of two electrically coupled single-drum hoists, together with the theory behind the choice of brakes and control systems supplied. The paper also covers the project logistics that were required in order to install and commission the new brakes and control systems with the minimum disruption to production on the only rock hoist on a major production shaft. Items covered include the modifications to civil works, pre-installation of bearing lubrication systems, brake discs and hydraulics and the interfacing of the new hydraulic control system to the existing electric control system. It had to be designed to be compatible to a new electric drive and control system due for installation at the end of 2005.

At Hilton Mine, 18 kilometres north of Mount Isa, the silver-lead-zinc sulphide bodies have undergone strong deformation in the form of folding and later faulting and brecciation in the hangingwall region of the mine. Variation in grades and widths over compara- tively short distances causes problems regarding accurate sampling of orebody exposures in underground development, and in defining confidence limits for the extrapolation of ore intersections in ore reserve calculations. The paper gives a preliminary insight into the problem of obtaining representative samples for exposed orebodies and discusses the sampling techniques employed. Results gained from these sampling methods could not be verified due to lack of individual bulk samples for comparison but strong evidence for precision was provided. INTRODUCTION In a developing mine like Hilton, accurate grade information is of extreme importance. Original grade information for a potentially viable ore deposit is gained from surface drilling, and initial ore estimates are calculated from the resultant ore widths and grades. Kidston Gold Mines, located in semi-arid North Queensland, Australia is currently in its closure phase. Highly innovative and comprehensive rehabilitation strategies were employed at the site, including the direct revegetation of the surface of the tailings storage; the construction of a tailings sediment entrapment pond; the construction of a spillway to drain large rainfall events from the surface of the tailings; the construction of store/release covers over the tops of the waste rock dumps; the sheeting with oxide waste rock of the waste rock dump slopes; the partial back-filling of the initial Wises Hill Pit with waste rock and thickened tailings produced from the subsequent Eldridge Pit; the partial flooding of Eldridge Pit following the end of mining; and the construction of wetland systems to treat contaminated tailings and waste rock dump seepage. These closure strategies involved the careful consideration of water management. Specific water management issues included understanding the water balance of the tailings dam; the operation of the tailings dam sediment entrapment pond and spillway; understanding the water balance of the store/release waste rock dump covers; the importance and sustainability of vegetation on the tailings, store/release waste rock dump covers, and on the sheeted waste rock dump slopes; the level and quality of water in the partially flooded Eldridge Pit; and the treatment of contaminated seepage in the constructed wetlands. The seasonal and highly variable rainfall experienced in this semi-arid climate posed a number of challenges for the management of water on the site post-closure. The paper details these challenges and highlights how they were resolved over the period leading up to and following the end of mining.

I would like to build on the keynote address given by Peter Stoker to the Fourth International Mining Geology Conference (2000) entitled æThe Role of the Mine GeologistÆ. He concluded that à the important aspects of the professional contribution of a mine geoscientist to a mine operation include: The geoscientists prime task is to maximise the profitable extraction of the ore deposit on which they are working û that is to add value. They must maintain and develop their own expertise. By ensuring a truly professional approach to all they do, they will provide the best service to the community, to their company or client, their shareholders and their family or close associates. In that process they will also assist in protecting themselves in this increasing litigious world. I intend to build on these points and, in particular to expand on what it really means to take a truly professional approach to mine geology. Mine geology is different from other forms of geological practice. As a mine geologist you are the advocate for the orebody. After all the orebody is the one thing that is unchangeable.

The Coastal Cordillera of northern Chile hosts the youngest and possibly best preserved iron oxide copper gold (IOCG) belt yet discovered and includes important deposits such as Candelaria and Mantoverde. The spatial and temporal relationships of hydrothermal alteration and mineralisation (Fe and Cu-Au) related to structural and lithologic features were investigated through geologic mapping and petrographic and geochronological studies along two W-E-transects crossing the Coastal Cordillera to the north of Vallenar. The project aimed to determine vectors for district-scale and regional exploration. Along with magnetite-apatite deposits (Central Iron Belt) and manto-type copper deposits, the IOCG deposits are hosted in a N-trending volcano-sedimentary sequence formed in a Jurassic to Early Cretaceous arc/back-arc setting (Sillitoe, 2003; Ramos and Alemßn, 2000). Calc-alkaline plutonic rocks intrude and metamorphose the volcano-sedimentary sequence, and become progressively younger from west to east reflecting a shift of arc magmatism (to Paleocene in the far east). From west to east along the Agua Grande-Chehueque profile, four domains of different economic potential are recognised. An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. Plant trials are at the best of times difficult to perform; given variations in the ore, operating practice and economic constraints placed on a plant. Testing grinding media at industrial scale adds a further level of complexity that needs to be accounted for.Laboratory test programs consistently demonstrate that altering the grinding chemistry through the application of inert grinding media has the potential to provide significant metallurgical benefit. However, prog- ressing from laboratory testing to industrial trial is often an agonisingly slow process that can lead to inconclusive results which raise more questions than give answers. There are many factors that need to be considered when conducting plant trials aimed at demonstrating the impact of inert grinding media on metallurgical performance. The decisions (or lack thereof) made during the planning stage can heavily impact on whether a statistically meaningful result is achieved. Various factors such as how the trial is conducted (dumping or purging the charge); the circuit configuration; collection of the right data; and even the human factor will affect the outcome. The authors will use examples to demonstrate the importance of proper planning and controlled operation on grinding media plant trials.

Major changes occurred in the management of loss prevention and risk management at operations in North and South America due to increased insurance premiums following the Olympic Dam fire in Australia in 2001. There are many different scenarios on how fires can develop and the estimated maximum losses (EML) those fires can incur. The EML is utilised by insurance companies to determine the cost of insurance premiums. The cost of insurance can be controlled at existing and newly designed solvent extraction (SX) plants by using risk reduction methods and design criteria to limit the fire exposure. A review of data collected during several loss prevention risk assessments can show how a budget can be protected from dramatically increased premiums and see which design of SX plant and fire protection standards best apply to your operations. The paper will investigate the pitfalls of existing materials of construction, capacity, geography, management practices, fire risk minimisation, and fire suppression systems. Intelligent engineering and managerial improvements implemented by the operations in the Americas in the past two years have further minimised the fire potential and benefited companies in insurance renewal negotiations.

Traditionally, the term ætotal systemÆ design applied to comminution conjures images of a design that addresses the usual business and operational drivers, including health, safety and environment (HSE), capital cost, operating cost, throughput and product size. In terms of the physical process, the mine to customer type studies also exemplifies an approach that satisfies a normal ætotal systemsÆ approach. As an industry there are drivers that are forcing a re-consideration of what we regard as our total system. This modification of drivers will require changes in approach and implementation to provide the best solutions. Some of the major changes that impact the drivers are shortage of skilled personnel, changing social attitudes to remote mine site work, greenhouse gas emissions (GHGE), quality of available orebodies and geographical location of new mine sites. One approach to the challenges presented by the changing business environment is to expand the system envelope around comminution to ensure that comminution, in its widest sense, helps to meet the new realities. Background to the new drivers and constraints is provided and some of the appropriate responses are examined in relation to the impact on the total system.

Ranger Uranium Mines Pty. Ltd. operates an open pit mine and ore treatment plant in the Northern Territory designed to produce 3 000 tonne/yr of U308 in yellowcake from 3 500 tonne/day of mill feed. The construction of this project was completed in 1981, 12 years after the discovery of the orebody. Wright-Davy, a Joint Venture of Wright Engineers and Davy McKee Pacific, were the Project Managers and Designers of the $270 million ore treatment plant and associated infrastructure. The project was designed in Sydney in -an office integrated with the Client, staffed by 35 key personnel drawn from Wright Engineers and Davy McKee, supplemented by personnel hired for the project. The peak Wright-Davy workforce in Sydney of 200 contained 113 design staff. The design principle of using the best practicable proven technology resulted in a plant which easily produces its design output using ore types outside the design criteria. The structuring of the project systems and industrial relations policies contributed to construction being completed within time and under budget. The plant was built without any major industrial dispute occurring and no dispute arose due to the uranium issue.
