The new field of environmental investiga tions introduces new problems of ethics, res- ponsibility, conflict of interest and technical procedures. Such investigations involve four elements: developer, consultant, approving authority and the public. It is essential that the consultant provide technical competence, speed and efficiency, impartiality and credibi- lity. Despite allegations to the contrary, it is not in the consultant's own best interest to omit, ignore or obscure significant adverse en vironmental impacts.

It is well known that most roof falls in coal mines typically occur at and around intersections. Room-and-pillar and longwall coal mining systems typically develop 3-way and 4-way intersections. This research develops an improved scientific understanding of stress distribution and associated instability behaviour around 3-way and 4-way coal mine intersections through 3-D numerical modelling and limited field observations. Numerical analyses were performed for an Illinois longwall coal mine to identify factors that influence intersection stability. The stability of immediate roof, floor strata, and coal ribs at and around intersections are considered with pre-mining regional horizontal stress. Non-linear failure analyses used the Hoek-Brown failure criterion for rock mass. Progressive failure zones in and around intersections were developed. For a typical 4-way intersection, pillar corners across the intersection fail first and lead to progressive failure of the immediate roof and floor layers. The mechanism of failure is similar for a 3-way intersection but the shape and extension of failed zones differ. For the 3-way intersection, the effect of off-set distance was analysed. It was found that minimum off-set distance of about 10 m (centre to centre distance between two 3-way intersections) was required to minimize interaction between two intersections. A simple instrumentation program monitor ground movements around intersections. These data were used to design the intersection geometry that is now being practiced by the mine. Refractory ores need to be pretreated prior to cyanide leaching for acceptable gold recovery. Pressure oxidation is one method of rendering the ores more suitable for cyanidation. The focus of this work is optimisation of autoclave configuration for pressure oxidation. An autoclave for the pressure oxidation of a feed containing pyrite and arsenopyrite was modelled, using the population balance framework. The autoclave model takes into account feed particle size, reaction kinetics and retention time. Mass balance calculations were incorporated into Cycad Process« software. This allowed for the investigation of different circuit configurations. The base case model consists of a single autoclave. The feed was then doubled and additional autoclaves were added to provide the same residence time as the base case. Four different configurations for the additional equipment were simulated. These were parallel, series, series with inter-stage thickening and parallel-series circuits. The options are compared in terms of extraction and productivity. The parallel circuit behaves similarly to the base case. The series and series-parallel circuits have higher recoveries and productivities than the base case. The series circuit with inter-stage thickening provides the highest extraction and productivity. This is because the thickening reduces the slurry volume and increases the residence time of the solids in the downstream autoclave.CITATION:Saloojee, F and Crundwell, F K, 2013. A survey is made of changes in the technical status of a number of western world copper extraction and refining operations over the past 20 years. Specific developments in pyro- and hydro-metallurgy and refining practices are identified together with factors in the changing environment of the industry which has influenced their adoption. Nickel extraction and refining is similarly discussed.The replacement of traditional technology by more attractive alternatives has occurred in a considerable number of operations. The develop-ment and status of new continuous smelting processes, advances in hydrometallurgy and refining innovations which emerged during the 1960s and early 1970s is discussed. The varying experience in commercial acceptance of these new technologies is noted.Finally some possible future directions are canvassed for both operators and the research and development institutions.

With the increasing demand for quality-specific ores, coupled to the reality of even more complex minable iron ore reserves, there is a growing need for real-time online material analysis of plant feed and product. For a full system mass balance, the combination of conveyor weight scales, flow and density transmitters are required. This alone does not guarantee product grade. For optimal process control and material blending, real-time online elemental scans in combination with the mass weighting is becoming more than a ‘nice to have’. These elemental scans located at key positions, enable the mining and plant operators to make informed decisions timeously, therefore ensuring product outcomes and optimising operations where material grade and the control thereof are important. Typically, these units follow the mining and primary crushing circuit as well as on the product conveyors, low-grade conveyors and tailings lines. Deployed after the primary crushing circuit, an analyser acts twofold:1. guaranteeing mining production, and2. processing facility feed blends.The analysers on the product conveyors guarantee saleable product. The analysers on the low-grade conveyor and tailings line complete the elemental balance and identify the potential of the low-grade and tailings for future processing. The system losses (accumulation) are calculated to determine the amount of material ‘lost’ during the processing stage which does not report to any of the aforementioned and can be used as a measure of the efficiency of the plant. A further advantage of the real-time online analysis of material is that immediate intervention can be taken in the event that the product is not of saleable product grade requirements. In the Khumani Iron Ore mine, Northern Cape, South Africa, run-of-mine (ROM), product and control analysers were included. Run-of-mine and product stockpiles are certifi ed, low-grade material is not currently directly measured, but calculated from the internal control loops. Iron units are reconciled between product and feed material.

Among the problems of the flotation of sulphides by the thiol collectors is the dependence and varieties of the flotation starting with the time and oxygen contents in the slurry. For sulphides, the flotation stage follows after the electrocatalytic oxidation of the collector with oxygen on the surface of the conductor minerals. The necessity of the oxygen for sulphide flotation (Plaksin and Bessonov, 1957) is in accordance with a corrosion model of a collector surface sorption (Salamy and Nixon, 1954). As Golikov and Nagimyak (1961) showed, the sulphides possess catalytic activity which provides the autoxidation of the xanthates in the sluny to the dixanthogen. This stage can be rather protracted, which limits the speed of the total process. Disulphides constitute important collectors for the sulphide flotation and the optimal degree of the xanthate oxidation is about 20 per cent for different ores (Abramov, 1978) or, following Chanturiya and Nazarova (1977) the surface compositions for various sulphide ores are different and an optimal oxidation degree is variable from five to 25 per cent according to the ore nature. The optimisation of the surface composition is possible by application of the dixanthogens, or by a partial chemical, electrochemical, or catalytic oxidation of xanthates (Desains, 1847; Schall, 1896; Vigdergauz, 1989). According to Rand (1977) and Vigdergauz (1991) sulphides possess different catalytic activities for oxygen electroreduction. In neutral solutions, for example, the following decrease in the order: FeS2 (Fe,Ni)9S8 CuFeS2 FeS; Cu5FeS4 Cu2S; PbS (Vigdergauz, 1991). For the cases of low catalytic activities of the sulphides, the preflotation oxidation of xanthate could be useful to optimise the process kinetics.

A cut-off grade is used to distinguish an economically viable block of ore from non-economical ones in mining operations. In order to obtain a high Net Present Value (NPV), a strategic and precise determination of cut-off grades (mill feed/marginal, marginal/waste) is required. In recent years, the significant depletion of feed grades and increasing mining operating costs have affected the viability of new and existing mining operations. Hence, the introduction of a pre-concentration system to process ore before sending it the main processing plant has gained increasing attention for its potential improvements in resource exploitation processes, mineral processing, energy consumption and environmental impacts. The primary potential advantage of implementing a pre-concentration system is the improvement of resource utilisation and increased reserves as a result of a reduction in cut-off grade. The objective of this paper is to present a new cut-off grade method, which can be used in the presence of a pre-concentration system for underground metalliferous mining operations. The results of this study illustrate the potential economic benefits of using a pre-concertation system prior to a mineral processing operation as a result of the reduced cut-off grade and increased NPV.

Declines for both access and rock haulage are replacing shafts for mining relatively shallow deposits of down to 1000 m below surface. Where the orebody does not outcrop and where surface access may be restricted, it is often necessary to drive long dead end headings before a connection can be made back to surface and a ventilation circuit created. In hot tropical areas and where large diesel powered equipment is used for mining, heat may also be a problem at these relatively shallow depths. The normal design criteria based on statutory limits and good practice used to evaluate ventilation and cooling requirements in terms of air velocity, dust, gases, diesel exhaust dilution, re-entry after blasting and heat stress are described in this paper. These are then used to design and cost alternative auxiliary ventilation systems that include leakage based on general fan performance curves and typical duct systems. The implications of the current European Community recommendations regarding nitrous fumes are also briefly considered. The actual problem relates to a 2100 m long decline that may have to be extended to 3000 m long without a connection to surface or through ventilation and is located in a hot tropical area where the surface wet bulb temperatures may exceed 25¦C for more than a third of the summer period. Once the preliminary ventilation design is completed, the auxiliary ventilation system can be modelled and simulations undertaken that incorporate heat and moisture transfer routines with the objective of determining the cooling load and amount of refrigeration required. Cognisance is taken of cyclic diesel operations and the thermal flywheel effect of the surrounding rock on the wet and dry bulb temperatures resulting from these operations.A suitable modular cooling system located at the portal is described and optimised with capital and operating costs of both the ventilation and cooling systems provided.

Silicon is a vital element in many products today, such as electronic components, solar devices, high-quality alloys, and many others. The growing global demand highlights the need for the development of sustainable production methods to meet this demand as an alternative to the current carbothermic reduction, submerged arc furnace (SAF) based process. An alternative to this is the aluminothermic reduction of quartz in a CaO-SiO2 slag, which not only reduces direct carbon dioxide emissions but also promotes the utilisation of secondary raw materials such as quartz fines, aluminium dross and scrap as well as secondary alumina (SA) from dross recycling. In the current study, the effects of SA and CaF2 additions to slag on the resulting metal composition and metal yield were explored. Results were compared with thermodynamic simulations using FactSage™ 8.1. Experimental results show that, in agreement with thermodynamic simulations, the silicon content of the alloy is increased, while the Ca is decreased for starting slags where CaO-SiO2 is partly replaced by CaF2. Similarly, the addition of SA to the initial slag results in an alloy with a higher silicon content.

Computational models are very useful for studying many of the physical mechanisms which can cause sample bias. Within such models we can predict the trajectories of all individual particles and thereby make observations which are not possible for physical systems. Physical mechanisms highlighted include congestion at the cutter aperture, particles bouncing over the cutter aperture, air drag on fine particles, waves of material being bulldozed off the belt by the upstream side of the body of square cutters, and particles being thrown by the leading edges of cross-belt cutter blades. Having identified relevant physical mechanisms for an existing cutter, we can estimate the extent to which they are likely to result in unequal representation of portions of a stream of material and thereby estimate the maximum likely sample bias.

Economic recovery of gold from complex gold ores, including poly-metallic deposits, is impacted by the presence of cyanide-soluble base metals. These base metals can create both a metallurgical challenge plus waste handling and disposal challenges. Base metals such as Cu and Zn compete for the cyanide reagent and often increase the total cyanide consumption to the point of making precious metals recovery uneconomic. In addition, the accumulation of base metals in cyanide solutions represent a challenge for cyanide detoxification and waste water treatment as these metals report to waste sludge. Such sludge requires safe handling and disposal, with possible long-term liabilities.Base metal interference can be removed with sulfidisation-acidification-recycling-thickening (SART) process technology. SART liberates the base metal from the cyanide complex and precipitates the metal as an insoluble sulfide product that can be recovered as a commercial grade concentrate. With the base metal precipitated, the cyanide can be regenerated as free cyanide and recycled to the gold extraction circuit.BioteQ completed laboratory testing for two projects, one employing cyanide leaching of copper-gold sulfide flotation concentrate and one employing a Merrill Crowe process, to determine the effectiveness of SART to remove and recover Cu and Zn in high-grade sulfide concentrates and to reduce the impact of cyanide-soluble metals on gold recovery and cyanide consumption. The search for economic mineral deposits is becoming more difficult as exploration goes deeper in the established mining camps and spread out to the surrounding covered areas, which may have an `overburden' some hundreds of metres thick. Geophysics is finding an ever increasing role in such exploration. When the target is zinc, the task often becomes even more difficult since sphalerite, the most commonly mined mineral, is non-magnetic, resistive, and relatively light compared to other sulphides. Fortunately, sphalerite commonly occurs in association with other sulphides, which are magnetic and/or conductive and/or heavy, thus most zinc-rich orebodies have at least one contrasting physical property to aid exploration. This paper presents the physical properties of sphalerite and other potentially important zinc minerals. Results of petrophysical measurements of samples from various zinc-rich ores are presented together with examples of geophysical surveys over a number of zinc deposits. The results show that the physical properties are not merely dependent upon the properties of the orebodies' constituent minerals. For example, the small (0.4 Mt) and low-grade (five per cent Zn + three per cent Pb + two per cent other sulphides) Flying Doctor deposit at Broken Hill, New South Wales (NSW) is much more conductive than the large (3+ Mt) and high grade (14 per cent Zn + five per cent Pb) Cadjebut deposit in Western Australia (WA). The Canadian mining industry was in turmoil in the early 1980s. The post-war era based on reconstruction faded away after the high demands for minerals in the 1950s and 1960s. Also, the industry had the misconception that the demand growth would continue for ever but the rapid growth of resource industries in the third world in the 60s and 70s, resulted in worldwide production overcapacity. The Canadian mining industry eventually recognised the facts and took drastic action for cost control and innovation in technology. The cost control had an immediate effect on the survival of the industry but resulted in only limited incremental gains. The economic problems that the Canadian mining industry faced in the early 1980s can be viewed now as a blessing in disguise. It was realised that for the Canadian mining industry to survive in the 21st century further gains were possible only through innovative technology. This conclusion led to a flurry of activity to establish mechanisms and delivery systems for innovative technology in the mining industry. Despite the initial difficulties in accepting high technology in the mining industry, it is being used increasingly in mining operations and will make future mining operations unrecognizable to present day mining engineers. The concept of an underground mine without underground staff seems to be far fetched, but it is possible that mines of the 21st century will approach the concept of very few underground operating personnel.

At the outset, I guess we should define what we mean by "com- modities". In the 20 minutes or so which I have for this paper, it is impossible to tackle all commodities -one would need to con- sider not only the base metals but also the ferrous iron and steel products as well as energy commodities such as coal, oil and even uranium. For the purpose of this address however, I would prefer to refer to the principal non-ferrous commodities: copper, lead, zinc, aluminium and nickel and, I would like to consider some of the changes which have taken place in the industry over the past 20 years-and the likely reasons for these changes. I would also like to dwell a little on the future and some of the key issues which-may influence the future path and direction of the metals industry.

Environmental legislation for the process and manufacturing industries is frequently formulated without considering the fundamental limits of physics, chemistry and thermodynamics within process technology. Recycling of end-of-life goods is used in this paper to show how the limits can be evaluated on the basis of the theory of minerals processing and metallurgical engineering. This theory has been applied on European Union level to re-examine the legislation for automobile recycling in a recent stakeholder discussion involving the automotive industry (http://www.assurre.org). This theory and our models are finding their way into the computer aided design (CAD) tools of the automotive industry, developments that form part of a project to design the super light car of the future (http://www.superlightcar.com). Only such fundamental approaches will in future be able to provide the basis to argue and define realistic and sensible environmental legislation.

On January 21, 1986, a methane ignition and subsequent mine fire occurred in the under- ground workings of the Jim Walter Resources, Incorporated No. 3 Mine located near Adger, Alabama. The fire, which began on a longwall face and eventually spread into the adjacent gob area, could not be extinguished directly and raged out of control for several hours. Sealing operations were begun underground by Mine Rescue Teams and the fire area was successfully sealed with the mine able to resume production in about one month. The No. 3 Mine liberated over sixteen million cubic feet of methane in twenty-four hours. The operation was unique, in that, the successful underground sealing of a fire in an ultra-gassy mine had not been attempted or com- pleted for several years. Maps and charts are included to give explanation of the typical data used to manage the recovery effort.

The Channel Tunnel is an outstanding example of an undersea tunnel and its design illustrates most of the unique features of this type of tunnel. The marine site investigation was partic- ularly vulnerable to adverse weather conditions. To minimise this interference the time the drilling vessel was required to remain on station was kept to a minimum by expediting the drilling and the insitu tests as far as was practicable. To avoid additional unforeseen costs the contract documents were framed to take particular account of marine practice. The limited access at the coast line meant that for economy, maximum tunnel advance rates had to be attained. Ground excavation, handling and disposal methods and the provision of the lining were optimised and equipment specified in detail to ensure that no one com- ponent was delayed by a lack of capacity or mechanical failure in any other.

During the 1950's there was a flurry of activity on the design of main ventilation shafts for mines. More recently, a new ana- lysis was commissioned in relation to the multi-shaft, nuclear waste isolation facili- ties currently under design in the United States. This paper presents the major find- ings of that study and should prove of value as a reference in the design of proposed new shafts. An overview of mine shaft resistance introduces the effects of the shaft walls, fittings, conveyances and shaft stations. Each of these is analyzed in turn. A com- pletely new technique is described, which facilitates the estimation of wall resis- tance. The effect of size of a conveyance is quantified and shown to be dominant when the cage occupies more than 30 per cent of the shaft cross-section. The dynamic effects of a moving conveyance are also analyzed.

As an environmental "pollutant", noise is different. For one thing, it is localised (as opposed to transfrontier) and, for another, relatively low levels can trigger very strong human reaction. The reactions, which are annoyance-based, range from mild to violent and do not always correlate well with the levels experienced. This paper draws on technical aspects of noise to consider control and control principles and balances them with the subjective nature of the perceptions and reactions. It is critical to bear in mind that health effects resulting from noise are secondary to the primary human reaction. It is also important to appreciate that annoying noise levels are usually well below those which cause hearing loss. Large mines tend to be remote from cities and towns and the country surrounding such mine sites is often inhospitable. In general, residences near large mines are committed for use by mine personnel and annoyance from mining noise would be rare. Noise problems at long term operations are often a result of secondary activity or land use. As a pioneer mining community develops, secondary and service industries may be established and a township created. With changes in way of life, the perception of problems also changes. Therefore, it is never too early to plan for noise abatement, particularly because noise is only one of a number of environmental and community concerns. Ihny environmental problems are associat- ed with development or expansion of smaller open cut facilities such as hardrock quarries. There is an ever-present need to reduce product cost by mining or quarrying deposits close to the end user and many local authorities have to operate quarries for undertaking their civil engineering responsibilities.

During Gepp's lifetime, Australia was in the forefront of science and art in metallurgical practice. This did not come easily for although blessed with a unique mineral deposit at Broken Hill large in size and rich in values much courage and daring was needed in the development of processes whereby they could yield the best results.The resultant development of the flotation processes at Broken Hill is one of the most important inventions of the 20th century.
