The coal basins that formed near the margin of Permian Australia were comparable in size with the Appalachian coalfields and with the European fields between Wales and Poland. They formed on the foreland side of a growing orogen in a system of linked transform basins formed by transtension on strike-slip faults. They were terminated and compressed when the Gympie volcanic arc was accreted to the orogen. Another huge system of Permian coal basins extending far inland from the Permian coast was also terminated when the Gympie Terrane was Accreted.

The Ore Reserve System implemented at Mount Isa for Mount Isa Mines Limited is a comprehensive' computer system designed to process assay, geological, structural and survey data for Isa and Hilton Mines. This paper outlines the achievements of this system to date and by example, discusses the various reports and plotted output available. __ The impact of the ore reserve system particularly within the-Geology and Mine Plan ning Departments is reviewed in terms of new approaches to ore reserve calculations, evaluating the economics of various mining methods and reviewing preliminary stope designs. The compilation of metal distributions for both copper and lead orebodies at varying cut offs and reducing the involvement of skilled personnel in preparing non-standard plots of borehole paths are discussed. Options available through the system and their applications are outlined together with the planned future development of the system.

The richer, shallower sapphire deposits of the New England region of New South Wales which have been traditionally mined by the small miner are almost worked out. Larger mining and exploration companies are replacing the small miner and exploring for the primary source of sapphire or lower grade alluvial deposits.Although in recent years considerable exploration effort has been directed at locating the primary source, commercial exploitation of sapphire is still restricted to the working of alluvial deposits.If the Australian industry is to compete against Asian and African producers it must use cost effective exploration, mining, processing and marketing methods.

Mining operations must become more predictable to overcome the volatility that has characterised the mining industry. Comparisons of production against predictions will become more consistent as mining operations merge and expand, as personnel move from site to site, and as public reporting of reconciliations becomes more prevalent. More consistent approaches are already being seen in the industry using the terminology used in this paper and elsewhere.Examples are provided that show how use of the waterfall chart as a reconciliation management tool can provide objective analysis to improve practices.Geometallurgical modelling is becoming more useful and will continue to do so as we move from a few bulk samples to better interpretation of material properties from geological mapping and drill sampling. Reconciliation has evolved to the stage where predictions of geometallurgical properties to optimise mill performance, and of geotechnical properties derived from better 3D geological models, should also be reconciled.CITATION:Shaw, W J, 2014. World urban expansion puts constraints on the available land surface area of our major cities both for accommodating people as well as providing infrastructure and services whilst at the same time attempting to preserve the remaining natural environment. Whilst consideration is often given to underground planning for private and public transport infrastructure, the author is of the opinion that the current lack of underground planning of our cities that are suitable for underground development will have major long implications when finally the need for underground space planning is critical and ultimately recognised. This paper identifies the need for our city planners to integrate surface planning and underground planning as a ‘total planning solution’ where the city plan incorporates the elements of underground space planning as identified in this paper. Investigations by the author reveal that there are very few cities in the world that actually incorporate underground space planning in their city plans. The author uses the City of Brisbane as a case study for the potential introduction of underground space planning as part of the city plan. Despite efforts by the author to include the planning concept of underground commercial development in the latest Brisbane City Plan 2014 as well as four underground space workshops in Brisbane over the past 20 year through the Australasian Tunnelling Society (ATS), underground space planning for the City of Brisbane, apart from infrastructure projects, is not considered of significance to the City of Brisbane.CITATION:Robertson, A C, 2014. Digital photogrammetry is revolutionising the task of geotechnical mapping of jointed rock masses and has greatly increased in popularity and sophistication in recent years. Modern commercially available digital photogrammetry software systems can provide geotechnical practitioners with a user friendly tool for rapid data acquisition. The data can be acquired remotely from large exposure areas, some of which may be otherwise out of reach due to restrictions on time, access or safety.Photogrammetry is a complimentary technology to discrete fracture network (DFN) modelling because it can provide the large, statistically significant, spatially located geotechnical data sets required to produce the most robust results. It also provides the flexibility to selectively map structures at a range of scales, depending on the focus of the DFN modelling.Integration of the interpreted rock structure data derived from photogrammetry with modern DFN modelling methods really advances the rock engineering process. The ability to generate 3D fracture models driven by the statistical structural data and conditioned to the features observed by the photogrammetry yields a synthetic rock mass on which improved design methods can be applied. The generation of multiple equi-probable conditioned DFN models allows the use of probabilistic methods for assessing kinematic stability, rock block size distribution as well as a range of other applications.CITATION:Rogers, S F and Booth, P W, 2014. This paper describes a hybrid ventilation system, which uses secondary fans that also act as de-facto primary fans to extract fresh airflow from the mine intake raise system. Also discussed are the associated problems such as uncontrolled recirculation, inadequate decline airflow, fire safety issues, prolonged blast fume clearance times, high air temperatures in main access routes, neutralisation of mine air cooling by heat from secondary distribution fans, increased ventilation system complexity, reduced flexibility and high pressure differentials (which cause safety issues with personnel access and reduce secondary ventilation system performance).Practical suggestions are provided on options to avoid these problems listed.CITATION:Derrington, A S, 2013. With the recent emphasis worldwide on environmental protection and sustainable development, finding an enriched mineral deposit no longer guarantees mining development. Only if the identified resource can be exploited in an environmentally-friendly manner is it possible that a mine may be developed. Designed primarily to aid with exploring for similar deposits of a particular type, traditional genetic ore deposit models tend to ignore the fact that all mineral deposits are characterised by type-specific environmental signatures. In fact, how an ore deposit can be mined, the commodities of interest extracted and the resultant mine wastes managed are all largely dictated by the geology and mineralogy as well as the environmental setting of the deposit. An environmental ore deposit model integrates such related information to identify the environmental challenges associated with mining an ore deposit of a particular type and facilitates the selection a suitable combination of methods to minimise environmental risks and impacts. Given that environmental management consumes a large portion of the budget for a modern mining project, making informed decisions at all stages of mining development can reduce the overall project cost. Through case examples, this paper demonstrates how environmental ore deposit models may be useful in mine permitting, active mining and in site decommissioning. It is only through an innovative and flexible approach that the mining industry can shed its tarnished image and gain the social license to mine.

Hamersley Iron's pellet plant at Dampier involves ore drying, dry grind- ing in ball mills, disc balling and, indurating by use of the straight grate system. After five years of operation, the plant's output has been increased from the design capacity level of 2 M.T.P.Y. to 2.5 M.T.P.Y. Steps taken in equipment modifica- tion, improvements in process control, and changes in maintenance procedures are described.

Covers on waste rock and tailings remain the primary choice for closure planning where the purpose is to create an environment where water ingress into reactive material can be controlled and/or prevented. In semi-arid and arid environments, dry cover systems are the preferred option with the design intention to absorb rainfall and to prevent deep drainage. Although the average amount of rain typical for semi-arid environments is relatively low and evaporative demand is high, the seasonal and annual distribution may vary greatly. Rocky substrates are often the only choice for the construction of covers due to economic constraints or availability of suitable materials. While the water holding capacity may be suitable for the application of a dry cover design in arid and semi-arid climates, some of these covers bear the risk of preferential water flow when rain events are intensive or occurring at high frequency. The objective of this presentation is to demonstrate the occurrence of preferential flow through rock containing dry cover systems. A regional classification for the applicability of dry covers is attempted to delineate those regions of Australia where the characteristic of the rainfall pattern increases the risk of failure for dry cover designs. The Weipa bauxite mining operation on the west coast of Cape York currently mines lb million tonnes of crude ore per year from the Andoom and Weipa mines. Andoom ore is trucked up to 4 km to a rail load station and hauled 20 km by train to the Beneficiation Plant. Weipa ore is trucked up to 7 km to the Beneficiation Plant. Increasing haul lengths and production requirements have led to a progression of larger two axle rear dump trucks and currently he intrcducticn of 145-tonne, three axle L t Dm dump trucks. bith the introduction of the Andoom a operation in 1972, the decision was made to use a railway system to haul crude ore from Andoom to Weipa. This system has proved to be successful from both an economical and operational view point. Due to the successful combination of a truck and rail haulage operation in Andoom, future :evelopment of orebodies requiring increased haul distances and increased production tonnages will probably result in extension r>f the railway system to compliment the trucking operation from the mine face.

The Cadjebut orebody is a MississippiValleyType (MVT) zinc-lead deposit, and is located approximately 80 km southeast of Fitzroy Crossing in the Kimberley region of Western Australia. It is one of five zinc rich orebodies discovered by BHP Minerals in the region.The participation in the Cadjebut Joint Venture is BHP Minerals limited (Manager), 58 per cent and Billiton Australia Limited, 42 per cent.The mineralisation is contained in gently dipping dolomitised limestone sediments (part of the Lennard Shelf carbonate sequence) with an orebody width of between 60 and 120 m and a strike length of approximately 3 km. The deposit consists of two thin, stratabound shallow dipping orebodies, one overlying the other, to provide discrete but not independent mining areas. The orebody contains approximately 2.1 million tonnes of recoverable ore at an approximate grade of 12 per cent zinc and four per cent Lead.

The selection of an appropriate mining method should take into account the geometry of the deposit and its physical properties. Other factors which assist in the determination are the requirements for flexibility in the mining process, minimisation of risk factors and maximising the financial return. Several established mining methods exist which can encompass the requirements to deliver the optimum mining method, this can be in both an underground or open cut environment. The objective is to outline these methods and where they can be applied in a mining project.

The ash content of coal can be determined using radioisotope X-ray techniques. A number of overseas applications of X-ray techniques are described; however these suffer from the disadvantage of either not compensating for iron variations or, if compensation is used, using X-rays of low penetration with consequent sampling difficulties. Current Australian Atomic Energy Commiss- ion (AAEC) research on X-ray techniques is aimed at overcoming the limitations of these methods. The AAEC method involves making measurements proportional to mass absorption coefficients of X-rays in coal at two energies. Calculations and experiments with X-rays up to 35 keV have shown that ash content can be determined to about 1 wt.%. This work is being extended to higher X-ray energies to enable the technique to be used directly on a conveyor belt or in a hopper. Neutron techniques can be used to measure the concentration of specific elements such as carbon, hydrogen and silicon in coal. Their con- centration is correlated to the coal parameters of interest. Methods of moisture determination based on hydrogen measurement and ash determina- tion based on silicon and aluminium measurement are described. "Sandfire Resources NL- (‘Sandfire’) DeGrussa definitive feasibility study (DFS) identified geometallurgy as a major factor in achieving optimum plant performance at the DeGrussa mine. A geometallurgical initiative was created to proactively investigate this issue, and a key initial achievement was the 2013 paper by Condon et al (2013) on developing a working geometallurgical model from first principles. Significant advancements in Sandfire’s geometallurgical understanding since that publication now shape how information is presented and communicated.The main geometallurgical parameters so far identified as critical factors affecting plant performance are Cu:S ratio, iron sulfide mineralogy, talc carbonate content and sphalerite content. Apart from specific mill strategies, geometallurgical issues have been managed through communication between departments and strategic run-of-mine (ROM) pad management.This paper uses the current theories of geological evolution of the volcanogenic massive sulfide (VMS) deposit at DeGrussa, to discuss the variability between the orebodies C1, DeGrussa (sea floor mounds) and C4, C5 (sub-sea floor replacement) to highlight the different issues each orebody is expected to encounter when processing.A zone of altered low-grade mineralisation surrounds the main orebodies at DeGrussa, referred to as a halo. Talc minerals are often patchy within this halo and often cause significant recovery issues during processing. This halo has been successfully modelled using MgO as a proxy. The ability to model the talc material assists with both identifying potentially problematic zones for processing and geological interpretation of the ore deposits evolution.Early in geometallurgy studies at DeGrussa it became apparent that it would be useful to identify processing performance prior to mining. This necessitated the incorporation of specific sulfide species into the mining block model. These attributes are interpolated from the logged sulfide estimates allowing a clear picture of the abundance of each mineral type within a defined area.In conjunction with the block model a geometallurgical factor (GMF) graph was developed, identifying sulfide mineralogy based upon mineral assays. These two recent additions to the model provide a clear picture of the nature of the ore sources that will be presented to the processing plant.The future of geometallurgy at DeGrussa will see these tools used to aid mine scheduling with a view to further improve processing recoveries.CITATION:Butler, C, Dale, R, Robinson, S and Turner, A, 2016.
