As underground mines become more geotechnically challenging with increasing depth and excavation size, the requirement for ground support to be installed as per design becomes more critical. The verification of installation quality for cable bolts and grouted rock bolts is difficult to assess. Current methods to control quality have limitations; pull testing is largely inconclusive with only extremely poor installation being identifiable. Audits during installation can only capture a small percentage of installed bolts. Following large rock mass displacement from either squeezing ground or seismic events, even previously well installed bolts may have yielded and require replacement. A method to provide an improved understanding of the reinforcement installation quality is Non- Destructive Testing (NDT) using acoustic reflection. To validate the accuracy of an NDT system, both plain and bulbed strand cable bolts were grouted in clear plastic tubes. The encapsulation grout quality was deliberately varied from full encapsulation through to partial encapsulation and a range of different size voids. The clear tubes allowed the ground encapsulation to be observed. Cable bolts strands were cut at varying lengths and different water cement grout ratios were used. Acoustic testing of the cable bolt specimens was completed blind; the technicians were not aware of what was being tested. The NDT results correlated well with the grout encapsulation, with differences between full encapsulation, minor voids and major voids being determined. The different water cement ratio and bolt lengths (including when partially cut) were also identifiable but with some discrepancies. Trials of the technology underground have also shown the data collection process to be relatively quick with each bolt taking 1-2 minutes to test, with interpretation of the results able to be completed soon after. The NDT results collected from the underground trial showed a wide variance in cable bolt grout encapsulation quality indicating that there were installation issues.

This paper describes a CFD modelling study which was carried out to investigate possible improvements in the design of an alumina precipitator tank at the Jajarm plant of Iran Alumina Company. In particular, the tank has an impeller located very close to the tank bottom, such that it quickly becomes covered with settled solids after a shut-down of the agitator, making it difficult to restart. A CFD model was firstly set up in which the existing design was evaluated in terms of flow pattern, off-bottom suspension and distribution of solids, and power consumption. Further simulations were then carried out to test alternative designs, leading to a recommended design, which maintains good mixing, with the same power consumption and without the use of a low-clearance impeller.

A rigorous methodology for prediction of flotation plant performance is presented, which is based on a standardised batch flotation test called the MFT. The work is part of the FLEET program, developed by MinnovEX with the support of seven large mining firms. The methodology is divided into three key steps: direct measurement of the kinetics of true flotation in the pulp, independent of hydraulic entrainment and other froth effects in the batch cell; benchmarking of the industrial plant over a broad range of ore types and operation conditions; and model calibration to describe froth effects in the plant, with a minimal number of parameters. To date, the methodology has been applied with success at several industrial plants, encompassing copper, gold, nickel, iron, lead, zinc and coal operations. This paper includes a description of the laboratory testwork procedure and scale-up to full industrial circuits. Examples of industrial application are also presented.

Orebodies in the Mt. Charlotte-Hannan's North area N. and E. of the town of Kalgoorlie provide a marked contrast to the pyritetelluride lodes of the Golden Mile, although both groups of orebodies appear to be fundamentally related.These highly siliceous telluride-free orebodies N. of the Golden Mile are closely related to strong oblique faulting. The Golden Mile lodes, while possessing an apparent overall relationship to the oblique faults also have a close relationship to E. dipping strike faults.INTRODUCTIONThe Mt. Charlotte-Hannan's North area lies N. and E. of the town of Kalgoorlie and is separated from the Golden Mile by the Golden Pike fault. The orebodies discussed lie in an area approximately 3 miles long by 1 mile wide (Fig. 1).The area includes the site of the original discovery of gold in the Kalgoorlie district in 1893. There have been numerous mining operations over the years, the bulk of the production coming from two orebodies, Mt. Charlotte and Hannan's North. These have provided approximately 900,000 tons of the 1,100,000 tons of ore mined in the area.Production to date from the principal orebodies in the area has been as follows.1. Hannan's North orebody, 582,000 tons of ore for 275,000 oz of gold2. Mt. Charlotte orebody, approximately 230,000 tons for 75,000 oz3. The need to continue the development of the Ensham mine has led to blast up to 75 m to the Eastern side of a water dam in the vicinity of Ramp 23. The water dam wall is exposed to blasting over a distance of approximately 500 m. The first decision was to determine that the existing rock pillar between the Eastern side of the water dam and the blasting operations may not be less than 75 m in order to minimise the damage that the blast could generate to the dam wall. It was also necessary to define blasting practices to minimising the blast damage to the rock properties of the dam wall and to avoid adverse effects from vibration and gases generated by the detonation on structures.For this purpose analytical designs and test blasts were conducted to assess the ground vibration attenuation within the rock pillar. From this analysis, it was concluded that the best practice to reduce the rock damage was to create a zone of fractured rock adjacent to the side of each production blast. This fractured zone would create an effective filter both for vibration and for gases generated by the blast. This zone of fractured rock was created by firing two buffer rows. In terms of pattern size and powder factor the two buffer rows were designed just to generate a fractured rock zone. To date approximately 500 m have been excavated along the eastern wall of the water dam where each production blast was preceded by a Trim blast. This practice has given good results with regard to minimising the damage generated by production blasting.

The Meekatharra mining district lies in the northern pan of the Murchison Province of the Archaean Ynlgam block of Western Australia. Since dis- covery of the Paddy's Flat belt in the district in 1897 total gold production has been 67 tonnes and a further 33 tonnes in resources have been defined by drilling. The Paddy's Flat gold deposits occur within the Gabanintha Formation, a basal formation of the Murchison greenstone sequence containing komatiitic basalts, ultramafics and minor banded iron formations. The regional control on the distribution of deposits is an anastomosing shear belt which extends over 350 km and incorporates the Mt Magnet, Reedys and Meekatharra deposits. The following gold deposit styles may be recognized based on lithological association and alteration: Albite porphyry hosted, Carbonate-fuchsite- quartz alteration hosted deposits, Banded Iron Formation hosted sulphide replacement gold deposits and quartz vein deposits. With the exception of the banded iron formation hosted deposits, the Paddy's Flat alteration zone shows strong similarities to the alteration styles at Kerr-Addison (Ontario).

The Cosmo Project falls within the Archaean to Palaeo-Proterozoic Pine Creek Orogen, one of the major mineral provinces of Australia.The Cosmo Deposit is interpreted to be a series of steep north-west-plunging gold mineralised vein, breccia and shear systems within the tight Howley Anticline and hosted within interbedded siltstones, mudstones, banded iron, phyllites, dolerite sills and greywacke.A folded environment poses a number of technical challenges, particularly for estimation.Handling of tightly folded and in some cases narrow domains might include subdomaining for orientation, omni-directional three-dimensional (3D) estimation within constrained domains or software-enabled unfolding/un-wrinkling procedures (transformation of the data and estimate space into a two-dimensional environment). Each technique has its own unique set of advantages and disadvantages.A further method (one applied at Cosmo) is where the estimation parameters (specifically search and variography orientation) are modified in a frequent or ‘dynamic’ sense to suit the orientation of the domain whilst maintaining 3D space. Control of the resource estimation orientation can be done in several ways, including the use of sectional panels of a specific size or, alternatively, orientation sector divisions. The sector approach provides some significant reductions in processing time over the panel technique and could be applied in a number of software packages.Three-dimensional ‘dynamic’ interpolation reconciles well with production data from Cosmo, whilst the sector method provides a practical technique that can be executed without the complications of transformation or the need for labour-intensive orientation subdomaining and with acceptable resource estimation run time.CITATION:Finch, A and Pridmore, C, 2014. Optimisation of Blast Design and Execution must be done right the first time. It is too late after the ore is broken. Consequences of poor design and execution negatively affect productivity from load and haul through the primary crusher to processing and hence reduce mine site profits. Harnessing and utilising ‘big data’ from geology, geometallurgy, drill hole location, powder loading, blast timing, blast movement and fragmentation to close the loop in blast design and optimise the blast increases productivity across the entire value chain from Mine to Mill. As the internet of things and artificial intelligence increases the quantity of data available, being able to capture and utilise this data to advantage is a challenge. Recent advances in software and hardware together with the increased power of cloud computing allows engineers to close the blasting loop to increase mine site productivity. Numerous case studies over the years detail significant gains from implementing the innovative technologies available to Mine to Mill projects. The opportunity is available for all members of the multi-discipline teams at each mine site to actively ensure productivity improvements are realised and maintained not only in their area, or silo of responsibility but across the entire mine site. This paper refers to recent case studies which outline how significant improvements in productivity are available to all mining operations to increase mine site profitability and dividends to shareholders.

The Operation of the LAROX PF-50 Pressure Filter at 'Ellatzite-Med' Flotation Plant, Bulgaria The implementation of Larox pressure belt filter, type Larox PF-50 provided within 6˜8% moisture content of the produced copper concentrate, which allowed good market realisation. The start-up of the pressure filter in 2009 reduced the electricity costs several times and had a positive impact on the technological regime of flotation. This article reveals the investigation results from the operation of the pressure filter according to different situations (density of the pulp, time for filtration, pressure of the material, pressure of the drying air, time for drying with air and other factors). The investment made in the pressure filter application is a guarantee for the successful operation of 'Ellatzite' flotation plant, Bulgaria in the coming years.

Rock blasting outcomes are often a shared responsibility of both the mine operations group and the mine geotechnical group. From an operational logistics and planning perspective, blasting concerns include optimal fragmentation for subsequent crushing, ensuring the blast is energetic enough to allow easy digging, and understanding the effect of muck from a previous blast on the current blast. From a geotechnical perspective, wall damage and catch bench capacity are the primary concerns. Other concerns for both teams include damage to mine infrastructure by fly rock or blast-induced vibrations, and the stability of open stopes under the pit. This work presents two blast modelling applications (or ‘apps’). The basic app instantly gives fragmentation and wall damage predictions for a given generic blast design. The advanced app loads the current pit contours, reads the blast design from a spreadsheet, and calculates the expected vibration magnitude and peak frequency. The apps have been developed specifically for the Rio Tinto Borates and Lithium Mine in California and are used to support blast design between the operations group and geotechnical group. The basic app instantly gives fragmentation and vibration predictions given a blast design by combining the Kuz-Ram fragmentation model with the scaled distance model for vibrations. The advanced app uses the signature hole method. Blasting outcomes at the mine have improved since using the apps.

There have been many changes in the Australian mining industry during the last 30 years. One of the most dramatic changes, from a geological perspective, is the reduction of in-house geological staffing and an ever increasing reliance on contract and consulting services. As a result, there has been a change in the way geological information is generated, managed and retained within the industry. This paper describes the changes that have taken place in the industry, provides two case studies of how companies manage their geological Intellectual Property and reviews some of the issues associated with management of in-house and outsourced geology services.

The application and development of monitoring and control techniques of coal mines in China is mainly described in the paper.The techniques of mine control and monitoring system have been developed as an important means of production dispatch, command and management with ever-increasing coal production and gradual raising of the level of mechanization and centralization of continuous mining. The continuous stage monitoring and control system in China coal mines has been developed from the initial single fixed plant monitoring, and the technique of computers has also been applied in the system for productive and environmental monitoring, featuring a new type of mine control and monitoring equipment of China.

Longwall mining is by far the most common method of underground coal extraction in Australia. Industry trends and expectations are placing increasing emphasis on the reliability and productivity of these operations. Longwalls are becoming wider and longer while retreat rates are continuously increasing due to significant improvements achieved in longwall equipment reliability and automation. This increased longwall productivity is placing significant emphasis on the reliability of longwall panel development.Although there have been significant improvements in the reliability of continuous miners and hydraulic drill rigs, the traditional resin-encapsulated bolt installation is still the principal method used in all major coal producing countries around the world. Anglo American realised that an opportunity existed to introduce an alternative roof bolt installation technique called ‘spin-to-stall’ (STS) into Australia. STS was first introduced by Anglo American Coal in South Africa, where it has been successfully used for over a decade, though implementation of South African STS resin in Australia has proven to be near impossible. Therefore, a new STS development project was initiated between Anglo American Coal and Jennmar Australia. In heavy minerals separation, the titanium and iron oxide phases are separated from silicates in the coarser particle size range (80 - 150 mm) using magnetic and electrostatic separators. With the ongoing challenge of heavy mineral ore deposits getting increasingly finer in particle size, conventional separation equipment suffers from the ability to process this material at the same throughput rate as coarser particles. A variety of magnetic separation technologies were developed to perform at a much finer particle size range, down to 2 mm in the clay industries mainly to remove titaniferrous oxide particles. Complementing the developments made on the physical aspects of magnetic separation, Cytec Industries has recently developed a ‘bolt-on’ chemical enhancement technology for magnetic separation (CEMS). This is to enable separation of finer particles, and weakly paramagnetic titanium phases from diamagnetic silicates that are not amenable to magnetic separation. This paper will provide an outline of the technology, illustrate its ability to process a wide variety of ores, and also discuss plant limitations. The major advantages of chemical enhancement technology to magnetic separation includes: simple dosing equipment extension to existing magnetic separation technology; ability to produce product of comparable quality with improved cost effectiveness, when compared to incumbent flotation; removal of impurity minerals over wider size range; enhanced removal of non-magnetic impurities; and improving the process robustness. Furthermore, chemical enhancement technology for magnetic separation has also emerged as a platform for removing impurities at lower levels in other mineral systems as well.

An unprecedented, quantitative, deposit-scale understanding of major clay mineral distribution throughout the Yeelirrie uranium deposit has been achieved by adapting the existing HyLogger™/HyChips™ analytical technique to measure resource assay pulps. Spectral analysis via HyLogger™ and HyChips™ systems has previously been used as a small-scale geometallurgical research tool, but never before has it been quantitatively applied to an entire resource sample population for the purpose of developing stand alone block models for major clay minerals. Economic uranium mineralisation within the thin but extensive Yeelirrie?palaeochannel?primarily exists within the transition zone between a groundwater-derived calcrete and the underlying clay-quartz regolith. Early geometallurgical investigations identified that certain clay minerals could be deleterious to the efficiency of the uranium recovery process. Accurate calculation of clay mineralogy from resource assays proved too difficult due to chemical similarities between co-existing kaolinite, smectite and magnesium carbonate minerals. A relatively low-cost, efficient and accurate method of quantitative clay mineral analysis was required to measure over 70 000 resource assay pulps. After initial testing and comparison with QXRD, the HyChips™ 3-1 spectral logging system was implemented as a primary method of clay mineral analysis for the Yeelirrie uranium deposit. The resultant spatial data set allowed the interpretation and geostatistical analysis of geometallurgical domains across the deposit. Clay block models were generated and used in geometallurgical resource calculations to benefit the mine planning process.

Forty years ago Dr Pierre M Gy, a metallurgist, introduced variography as applied to monitoring a process. Consequently, his followers used the variogram to elaborate meaningful process control charts, especially since 1993. The name æChronostatisticsÆ was suggested several times by Gy as a logical name for this new science. The intent was to draw a parallel between the variogram identifying the variability components affecting a process parameter as a function of time, and the variogram used in geostatistics identifying the variability components of a given mineral content as a function of space. Heterogeneity problems encountered have indeed strong similarities. However, there is a fundamental difference. The variogram used in geostatistics is often stationary within a given type of mineralisation. While investigating a dynamic process through Chronostatistics, there is no such thing as a stationary variogram. Still, the evolving variogram provides essential information about subtle, often overlooked process difficulties. Chronostatistics is especially useful for management to take advantage of existing data that are often a forgotten source of valuable information to pinpoint recurring structural problems. The superiority of Chronostatistics over conventional statistical process control approaches is that it links observations to the inherent heterogeneity of materials under investigation, therefore to the sampling theory. Chronostatistics is like opening a new world to the metallurgist, making the process variability speak in a more comprehensive and in-depth way. Several case studies are presented to demonstrate the potency of this new science. For each of them, observations lead to solutions for continuous process improvement, therefore attractive economic opportunities. The philosophy is this: if a control chart shows a process is out of control, it must also suggest logical and pragmatic directions for solutions. The intent of this presentation is to vastly expand on these valuable, almost forgotten ideas.

This report will differ slightly from the traditional scientific and technical discussions given at this type of conference. It will focus on the personal experiences and choices that I undertook when deciding on my graduate position and location after completing university studies. Throughout the duration of my course I had experience in both fly-in, fly-out operations in the Pilbara and residential operations in the West Australian Goldfields. These experiences, though limited, allowed me to explore the two different methods and their pros and cons, and consequently to make my choice for graduate employment. Throughout the duration of my degree I believed it was important to gain a basic understanding of the two methods, focusing on lifestyle and personal interactions. The decision that a residential site suited my personality and lifestyle then allowed me to refine my job applications to a more specific list of mine sites and companies, resulting in a residential position with BHP Billiton at their Iron Ore operations in the Pilbara, Western Australia.

Independence Group’s Jaguar Mine treats a polymetallic ore producing a copper concentrate and zinc concentrate. Effective separation of the sulfides requires relatively fine grinding with flotation feed P80 of about 75µm. Zn losses to final tails are greater than 60 per cent and <32 µm. When magnetic conditioning was first installed in 2010 it showed about an 8 per cent reduction of zinc in final tail and on some ores a similar benefit for silver as well. Current testwork is showing about a 12 per cent reduction in zinc and silver in final tail, consistent with the original testwork. Sizing of the final tail during the tests showed that the reduction of zinc and silver losses were only in the <32 µm fraction, as would be expected from an aggregation process. However, the most surprising result was about a 4 per cent reduction in zinc and silver in the plant feed with a >99 per cent statistical certainty. The reduction in zinc and silver in the feed is also only in the <32 µm fraction. Therefore, because the magnetic conditioning of Zn flotation feed cannot impact plant ore feed grade the hypothesis is that the magnetic conditioning is reducing the fine mineral from downstream processes, like filtering and thickening, returning to the plant feed in the recycled process water. This hypothesis is consistent with plant observation of dirty concentrate thickener overflow and measurements of solids in the overflow, as well as the average % Zn grade in cyclone overflow that correlates with the magnetic conditioning ON and OFF days. The Mount Isa Mines (MIM) Copper Concentrator has an extensive history of reagent trials, with different reagents coming in and out of favour over the years. The research and use of carbon depressants is particularly prevalent, as carbonaceous pyrite is a major source of concentrate dilution. Years of research led to the use of naphthalene sulphonate due to its excellent carbon depression properties. However, due to rising reagent costs carbon depression ceased in the late 1990s. This led to the loss of knowledge about the use and value of naphthalene sulphonate. Cyanide is used at the Copper Concentrator for the sole purpose of pyrite depression and over the years multiple projects have been devoted to finding alternatives to it. In 2012 the neighbouring MIM Lead-Zinc Concentrator replaced cyanide with naphthalene sulphonate which resulted in cost savings and the elimination of a hazardous reagent. In 2013, plant trials were conducted at the Copper Concentrator in hopes to replicate the outcomes obtained at the Lead-Zinc Concentrator. The results of the trials conducted at the Copper Concentrator showed that naphthalene sulphonate could not replace cyanide and this work was set aside to pursue more promising projects. Further research conducted in 2014 found that mineralogy and a better understanding of the depressing mechanism of naphthalene sulphonate held the key to improved pyrite depression at the Copper Concentrator. The findings showed that Mount Isa copper ore contains two forms of pyrite; euhedral pyrite (cubic pyrite) and framboidal pyrite (carbon rimmed spheres of pyrite), both of which require different reagents to sufficiently depress them. Naphthalene sulphonate was found to be an excellent carbon depressant, suitable for depressing graphite and framboidal pyrite, whilst cyanide specifically targets euhedral pyrite.In 2015 laboratory test work was conducted to examine the use of naphthalene sulphonate in conjunction with cyanide to selectively target both forms of pyrite. This work led to a full plant trial, the results of which showed a significant increase in plant performance, with higher copper concentrate grades and recoveries being achieved. Metallurgists frequently use a small number of large samples to characterise expected mill performance, with the a priori assumption that these few samples are representative of the entire deposit. Geometallurgical sampling is becoming more prevalent as a way to use many smaller samples to indicate the expected recovery as part of the Mineral Resource or Ore Reserve estimation.Recent increases in prices for iron ore, together with the potential to produce high iron and low contaminant concentrates, have resulted in a renewed interest in recovering magnetite from banded iron formation and other deposits.Geometallurgical evaluation of magnetite involves approaches to sample preparation, sample analysis and resource estimation that are different from the methods commonly used for haematite iron ore. The magnetite sampling protocol is specific to each deposit, and is typically designed around a specific metallurgical flow sheet.The sampling protocol will typically include the use of Davis Tube analysis. The Davis Tube is a bench-scale test that is used for determining the mass magnetic recovery from a small amount of sample ground to a specific size. The magnetic concentrate may then be analysed and together with the mass magnetic recovery, may be used to simulate the expected mill recovery.During resource modelling, the mass magnetic recoveries and concentrate grades may be assigned to a block model using regressions with other chemical constituents, or may be estimated directly. For estimation of the concentrate grades, a weighting can be applied to account for the different mass magnetic recoveries from each sample and the impact of these differences on the concentrate estimates.This paper presents an overview of the use of metallurgical test data in resource evaluation for magnetite deposits.
