Gravity gold recovery has been practiced for thousands of years, making it one of the oldest forms of mineral processing. Gold is 19 times heavier than water although the barren rock is generally only 2.7 times heavier. Any potential gold ore needs to be characterised to assess its amenability to a gravity recoverable gold (GRG) process based on well planned and executed test work. Scale up considerations need to be considered in designing a gravity circuit. The economic impact of a gravity circuit should be justified based on the installed cost and likely benefits. Maximising gravity gold recovery results in a faster cash flow, lower operating cost per ounce and higher overall gold recoveries compared to the several weeks required to recover gold adsorbed onto carbon. The advent of centrifugal concentrators such as the Knelson and Falcon, coupled with intensive leaching of concentrates (ILR), has revolutionised gravity gold circuit designs. Considerations associated with the sizing of the centrifugal machines and the percentage of the circulating load (bleed) that should be processed is discussed in this paper. The trends with gravity circuit layout, engineering, as well as optimum dumping cycles, are important areas which require close consideration. Key aspects of these are presented in this paper. There are a number of circuit configurations to be considered, including the integration of different gravity concentrators. Other gravity process design considerations such as fewer modules, the effect of equipment size and enhancement of process efficiency using preconcentration, together with factors that affect OPEX and CAPEX are addressed. Practical considerations of maintenance, security from theft, minimisation of risk and water balance considerations are discussed using different equipment and circuit configurations. The trend towards using gravity recovery in flotation plants is also reviewed. A number of examples are cited and good design aspects highlighted.

At Binebase mineralisation is hosted within an andesitic Neogene volcaniclastic succession on Sangihe Island, Indonesia. Two major alteration types occur; an initial widespread phyllic assemblage of quartz -illite with chlorite, smectite, gypsum and pyrite, and a superimposed quartz - barite - sulphide assemblage. The phyllic alteration arose from a neutral to weakly acidic hydrothermal solution of greater than 200 degrees C, and the quartz - barite - sulphide assemblage arose from a cooler slightly more acidic fluid. This second alteration event is interpreted to have selectively replaced permeable volcaniclastic breccias and coarse lithic tuffs within the altered sequence. Gold and silver mineralisation is associated with the latter alteration, and is locally controlled by the degree of silicification and sulphide abundance. The sulphides present are pyrite, covellite and chalcopyrite. The sulphides are very fine grained with colloform and framboidal textures and were deposited contemporaneously with the bulk silicification of the coarse sediments. A large portion of the mineralised rock has been oxidised to a quartz - barite -limonite - goethite - jarosite assemblage.Coincident gold, silver and antimony geochemical soil anomalies gave the best correlation with anomalous gold and silver grades in bedrock as identified by drilling. Resistivity proved a reliable geophysical method for delineating zones of silicification.

Investigation of the differential flotation characteristics between arsenopyrite and pyrite in a ore concentrate have been carried out on a laboratory Leeds flotation cell. Experimental results indicate that some limited separation between arsenopyrite and pyrite is possible by differential flotation under the conditions of high pH and low pulp redox potential. The best performance in this testwork was achieved by using an oxidizing agent at pH 10.7. Of the oxidizing agents tested, NaOCI gave better oxidizing effect than KMnO4. It has also been observed that the pulp redox potential depends on the pulp pH value. At high pH values a hydroxide layer is formed on the arsenopyrite surface, which has the effect of a depressant on the arsenopyrite.

The elements listed above represent major topics and require a great deal of expansion in the body of the document. We offer these notes as a practical contribution. All the arguments we advance have been tested by practical experience.In its preparation we realised that our subject was one of such importance and covered so wide a field that, dealt with by one of us alone, it might easily have been too much for him, so we have endeavoured, by mutual criticism and advice and a pooling of ideas, to bring forward a few points that may be of advantage to members. If any of the paper is of benefit to mining on the "Golden Mile," or elsewhere, we shall feel amply repaid for our efforts.It is obvious to all that the longer the machine is working productively per shift the greater the return, to all concerned; the machine-man himself and the company. Furthermore, if a man commences a shift with a definite objective in view; for instance, to bore and fire a specific cut, which he recognizes will give him a good financial return, then that man will exercise all his capabilities to attain that objective.In this paper we hope to demonstrate the value to the machine-man of the knowledge of the capabilities of each hole he bores, so that he will be enabled to utilize his drilling time to the greatest advantage. Also, we hope to show that such drilling time can be advantageously extended.After the war, with the influx of new men to the industry, some education on the finer points of machine work may be desirable, and any instruction in this branch must stress the realization of the value of each hole.We realise that most of those present have a sound workable knowledge of machine-mining, and we are not trying to teach anyone the fundamentals of machine work, but we would like to bring to their attentIon some of the finer points which we believe are very important.The machine-man has control of gear of a capital value of over £150, and the use or misuse of that material has a direct bearing on working costs. In the metal and mineral industry, different empirical techniques are used to estimate the remaining thickness of the lining within an operating furnace. The disadvantage and costly factor when using these methods is that production needs to be halted. Hatch has developed an accurate and reliable technique based on stress wave propagation principles to determine the condition of the remaining lining whilst the furnace remains online and operational.The technique involves test data collected and compiled to generate 3D imagery used to assist operators and maintenance planning personnel with valuable information showing areas of metal penetration in the lining, remaining lining thickness, exact location of voids, cracks, poor contacts and deterioration due to chemical attack. In this paper, the principals of the AU-E technique will be explained both theoretically and practically. In addition, the use of ultrasound technology for determining the condition of copper cooling elements will be briefly addressed.

Mining organisations grapple with the same problems year after year, wasting incredible amounts of time and money. According to estimates from the International Labour Organization (ILO), over one million work-related deaths occur annually, and hundreds of millions of workers suffer from workplace accidents and occupational exposure to hazardous substances worldwide. Many accident reports cite human failure as a primary cause (Busse and Johnson, 1998). The workers at the Bhopal chemical plant pumped methyl isocyanate into a leaking tank (Morehouse and Subramaniam, 1986). On 3 December 1984, more than 40 tons of methyl isocyanate gas leaked from a pesticide plant in Bhopal, India, immediately killing at least 3800 people and causing significant morbidity and premature death for many thousands more. The company involved in what became the worst industrial accident in history immediately tried to dissociate itself from legal responsibility (Broughton, 2005). Australia is not spared from safety problems either (Lucas, 2022). The ILO Convention 176 (1995) as a response provides that national law should inter alia provide for the supervision of safety and health in mines; the inspection of mines by designated inspectors of the competent authority; the procedures for reporting and investigating of fatal and serious accidents; the compilation and publication of statistics on accidents, occupational diseases and dangerous occurrences; the competent authority to suspend or restrict mining activities on safety and health grounds until conditions giving rise to the suspension are addressed; and worker consultation on matters related to safety and health in mines. This has assisted in getting enough data to define the magnitude of the problem to the mining sector.

In surface mining operations, the ease with which a muckpile may be dug is a dominant factor in mining efficiency. Within broad limits, this is largely dependent on muckpile shape and looseness within a muckpile. Moreover, prediction of grade boundary movement and subsequent dilu- tion is of interest to most open cut mines. Such a predictive tool would enable blast design changes to be made to reduce mixing of certain grade regions. At the very least, a good knowledge of post-blast region bound- aries can reduce layout of the grade boundaries and decrease grade dis- crepancies between pit and plant. The model presented in this paper is able to consider various options for a production blast and predict consequent muckpile shapes and grade boundary movements in a three dimensional manner. The overburden geometry, hole patterns, hole inclination and charge distribution are all explicit model inputs. The model divides the rock mass into blocks and calculates a velocity for each block. Three controlling parameters are used in the model, which are related to the explosive energy per unit length of blast hole, energy attenuation of the rock mass and inter-row delay, respectively. The output of the model is a 3 dimensional muckpile shape (contour or any cross section) and a contour map of grade distribution within the muckpile. The model parameters are site specific, since their values depend on the rock condition and explosive-rock interaction which varies from site to site. In order to "tune" the model to a particular site, parameter values must be found which reproduce an observed muckpile profile shape from a given blast design. This calibration of the model requires at least one surveyed muckpile profile shape from a production blast. The model parameters which best reproduce that shape are found by a pattern search technique, and may then be used to predict the effect of changes in blast design on muckpile profile shape and grade boundary movement.

Answers to many questions arising in the different phases of exploration, estimation and production of a mineral deposit, can be found in the geostatistical theory of G. Matheron. It is shown that all these questions regarding sample size, number of samples, shape of drilling pattern can be answered as soon as the continuity of the mineralization is quantitatively characterized by means of a variogram. Next a formula which gives the variance of the error associated to any estimation procedure (i.e., any method and any sampling pattern) is given. Applications to the computation of the standard error of the'mean for various sampling patterns are shown, as well as how to use the formula to simulate several possible sampling strategies and choose the best one. Altogether it is shown how to answer the often heard question, "what happens if such and such sampling procedure is used?", rather than giving an hypothetical "optimal" solution.

An ongoing challenge in the coal industry is pyrite removal using the flotation method for fine particles. The use of a æseparation in frothÆ (SIF) technique to recover coarse particles of up to a few millimetres in size has presented a potential solution. However the commercial success of SIF is still limited due to the poor understanding of the separation mechanism. The particle floatability in SIF is determined by the constructive or destructive stresses resulting from the forces exerted by the particle on the bubble films. Hence, the surfactant properties and the mineral characteristics (eg hydrophobicity, shape, etc) are the key factors that control the interaction between the particle and froth. In the present work, the interaction forces between different particles (ie crushed glass, pyrite and coal) and a single air bubble are measured in a non-ionic surfactant solution (pentaethylene glycol mono n-dodecyl ether, C12E5) using an atomic force microscope (AFM). Experimental results show that the interaction is primarily dependent on the contact angle (ie the degree of hydrophobicity of the minerals). For crushed glass, the transition from repulsion to attraction was observed as the contact angle increased. As the concentration of C12E5 increased, the adhesion force was suppressed due to wrapping effect. For coal and pyrite with much higher hydrophobicity, long-range attraction was observed. The effect of shape factor was only visible at high surfactant coverage where sign of destabilisation became noticeable on the retracting force curve. These results provide a fundamental understanding of the direct interaction forces of a complex real system between an irregular particle of either crushed glass, pyrite or coal and a single air bubble. Theories developed for interpretation and modelling are thus far based upon the study of ideal systems of glass or polystyrene spheres and an air bubble and were incapable of explaining the interactions in complex real systems. The presented measurements were a first approach to the problem of real mineral-bubble interaction in flotation systems. Thus, the results can only best be interpreted semi-quantitatively.

The sampling time, the costs and its quality are the three factors that determine the best method of drilling in mineral exploration. The two principal methods of reverse circulation (RC) and diamond core drilling are often used in combination by mine operators. RC is used for drilling shallow holes and in-pit grade control, and core drilling for deeper holes to identify future resources. The RC method is faster and more flexible than coring and provides virtually uncontaminated cuttings (ranges from dust to 25 mm chips) to the surface cyclone suitable for geochemical anomalies. The diamond coring produces core samples to increase the level of geological knowledge and the 3D extension and distribution of the orebody. However, both of these methods are subjected to certain limitations and inefficiencies in reaching deeper depths and drilling complex hole geometries. Examples of such shortcomings include the inability to provide enough air pressure for RC drilling and high friction between drill pipe and the hole wall in diamond core drilling.Considering that delivering large volume of reliable samples from deep zones to the surface in shortest possible time is of paramount importance in mineral exploration, and assuming that obtaining core samples over whole overburden is not always essential, then drilling small size holes as fast as possible and delivering the small chip samples to the surface would be a good alternative with several advantages over conventional drilling methods for deep hard rocks mineral exploration. As a result, the use of coiled tube (CT) drilling technology has been proposed recently for such applications. CT is a continuous length of ductile steel or composite tube stored and transported on a large reel; and allows fast drilling by eliminating the connection time and providing continuous circulation during drilling. This enables quick access to the zone of interest to collect the cuttings or obtain core samples. CT is advantageous particularly in drilling directional boreholes and multi-laterals. In this paper, feasibility of using CT delivering reliable samples is discussed for deep mineral exploration. Having passed through a number of previous phases the best longwall results in Australia have shown a significant increase in the last two years. The results expected from a longwall face can be estimated from the ideal production rate, determined by the capacity of the equipment and the conditions in which it is installed, the utilisation, and the available operating hours. Back analysis of the results achieved suggests that, on average, recent improvements arise from the higher capacity equipment recently installed; the utilisation has in fact reduced slightly. Review of the constraints which limit the longwall results, i.e. shearer speed, AFC capacity, support, advance rate, and man travel speed, shows that little improvement can be expected in the ideal production rate in thinner seams. In thicker seams the AFC often proves the overriding constraint and further increase in equipment size could lead to increased future ideal production rates and is expected. In all cases a concerted effort to increase the utilisation achieved is likely. For deep mines with thin to medium seams this offers the most viable path to improvement; by contrast thick seams with highwall/shallow access may benefit from further increase in equipment size.

Thirty two polyacrylamide flocculant samples were selected from the wide range offered to the Australian coal industry. An extensive test program was conducted to consider the properties of the flocculants, the substrates, the process conditions and the water chemistry encountered in coal preparation plants. The study indicated that flocculants with molecular weights of 12 to 14 million and degree of hydrolysis around 40% gave the best "average" performance over a wide range of process conditions. The pick-up and filtration of fine coal was demonstrated on a pilot scale to be a critical function of flocculant properties. This study also showed that the agitation intensity during flocculation was a critical parameter in determining the settling rate of the slurry and the clarity of the resulting supernatant. An electronic meter to measure agitation intensity was designed, constructed and tested to demonstrate how, for the first time, laboratory results can be implemented in operating plants.

The Mt Lyell Mine, situated in Queenstown on the west coast of Tasmania, has a production history of more than 100 years. Previous mining activities have resulted in substantial modifications to environmental conditions at Mt Lyell and disposal of sulphidic waste rock across the lease has left a legacy of on-going environmental impacts including acid drainage (AD). In 1995 Copper Mines of Tasmania (CMT) was granted a mining lease Irons the Tasmanian State Government for redevelopment of Mt Lyell and indemnity from actions concerning pollution from previous occupation and use of leased land. The Environmental Management Plan (EMP) for the Mt Lyell redevelopment committed CMT to be responsible for waste rock dumps generated from their activities and to ensure that management is in-line with best practice environmental management principles. CMT commenced commercial production in December 1995 with sulphidic material from development of the underground Prince Lyell mine reporting to a single waste rock dump constructed according to a management plan developed in July 1995 and superseded by a management plan for extension in May 1997. The CMT waste rock dump currently has a total capacity of 220 000 m- and approximately 120 000 m3 of rock have been placed to-date. Material reporting to the dump is placed in a densely compacted state to a controlled surface profile. The dump is clay capped and a final revegetated soil layer placed on top. A rock pitched drain extends down to a wetland area in order to remove stormwater and minimise possible soil erosion on the revegetated sections. An integral part of the management plan for the waste rock dump involves characterisation of waste rock to identify geochemical rock types according to acid forming potential with provision for selective placement within the dump. High-risk materials are selectively placed and covered within the core of the waste rock dump, where possible, to control sulphide oxidation. Monitoring equipment has been installed in the waste rock dump by the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO) and an on-going monitoring program has been established to demonstrate the integrity of the dump cover as a barrier to the influx of atmospheric oxygen into the dump. The overall objectives of this program of work are to control the oxidation of sulphidic waste rock in the waste rock dump, minimise the risk of AD, prevent pollution of the aquatic environment and thereby demonstrate the integrity of the CMT waste rock dump management Strategy.

The Bulli and Wongawilli Seams, the two principal sources of coking coal for the Port KKembla steelworks of Australian Iron and Steel Pty. Ltd., vary in rank and in type over the Southern and -South Western Coalfields. The Bulli Seam, ranging widely in type, produces coke varying from weak to strong. The Wongawilli Seam, more consistent in type, produces coke of more consistent strength, but considerably less strong than that from the best Bulli Seam coal. Plans of seam variation show the regional trends in rank and type for each sear. The strongest coke is derived from coal containing between 45 and 55 per cent vitrinite, m.m.f. This is obtainable from the Bulli Sean in a zone embracing Bulli and Appin Colleries.

The paper will review the marked upsurge in the installation of new continuous metal coating lines, both hot dip and electrodeposition. Although some of this new capacity has been replacement for obsolete facilities or directed at traditional markets, eg building products, consumer durables etc, by far the major portion is targeted at the automotive industry. The reasons for the rapid growth of coated automobile panels are discussed. A comparison of the installed capacity with projections for this market indicate that a severe over-supply situation has arisen. Many coatings are now available for the automotive industry, each with their own strengths and weaknesses, but none as yet wholly satisfactory. Coating development has mainly been cost driven. This favours hot dipped coatings, providing surface quality and pressing problems can be overcome. The high cost per unit thickness of electrodeposited coatings has also seen pure zinc coatings being replaced by thinner, more corrosion resistant alloy coatings such as zinc-nickel and zinc-iron. Recently resin overlays have been introduced to improve the performance of electrodeposited coatings. Developments in coatings for the more traditional markets will be described. The fastest growing market in the last decade has been prepainted product for the building industry. This has led to the installation of extra painting capacity and again it appears an excess capacity situation has occurred. Over the same period the traditional zinc coatings have continued to lose market share to the zinc/aluminium alloy coatings, Galvalume and Galfan. These have been joined recently by '1'aiyo Crack-Free which has been taken up by some metal coaters. Galvalume is now widely accepted as being the best available coating for unpainted applications. It is also suggested that 'spin-off' coatings from automotive developments might find a niche in the consumer durable market. The end users of coated products, particularly the automotive industry, have demanded improvements in quality, such as surface smoothness, formability, etc. At the same time the new coating lines have to process wider strip and run at faster speeds. To reconcile these somewhat incompatible needs has required numerous process improvements, many of which need in-line instrumentation and computer control. The more important of these changes are discussed briefly. Finally the paper will describe the recent developments which have occurred in continuous galvanising in Australia and put them into context with the rest of the world.

"The financial valuation of mining assets has a number of fundamental differences to the valuation of many other asset groupings. One such difference is that typically, the greater proportion of both the cost and revenue sides of the cash flow are inherently governed by systemic market forces.As a result, the range of outcomes for the valuation of each mining asset is more unpredictable, with higher levels of risk and uncertainty. In contrast, the management function of many other non-mining businesses or industry groups can control at least a portion of the cash flow by maintaining the margin or controlling the sales price. The management teams of mining businesses and operations typically have limited options, and are thus price-takers for both costs and revenues. As mining is an inherently cyclical industry, large, long-life operations can exist through several price cycles, making valuation both subjective and challenging.The outcomes of both static- and stochastic-based valuations, as well as the internal probabilities of the associated cash flow statements, are significantly impacted when the correlations between the appropriate parameters are quantified, modelled and incorporated into the valuation framework. The appropriate parameters for correlation modelling primarily include those that are governed by systemic market forces. Applying this process results in a different risk profile for the asset by allowing the risks resulting from systemic market movements to be more accurately quantified and then objectively minimised. Grinding media is a major consumable in mineral processing and therefore decreasing costs associated with its consumption is regularly considered a key goal for the minerals processing industry. Grinding media manufacturers have historically developed steels with improved wear life for their products as a way of delivering incremental media quality improvement. This has included increasing carbon levels from low-to-medium carbon steels up to the eutectoid carbon composition of 0.77% where the relationship between higher carbon and better wear performance is well understood. Producers today will regularly use grades in excess of 0.8% to further improve wear performance particularly for rolled grinding media.This paper first introduces the demonstrated relationship between this increased carbon content and improved wear resistance along with metallurgical rationale behind the high carbon production process and limitations. To test the performance improvement associated with the higher carbon steel grade, a series of Marked Ball Wear Tests (MBWT) were carried out. This paper also explores the relationship between ball properties, test methodology and wear performance and concludes by correlating increased carbon grade with a reduced consumption rate of between 3.1% and 6.1% in the tests conducted.CITATION:Bovell, M, Bose, R and Cheong, G, 2018. Manganese nodules cover great areas of deep ocean floor far from land, and have long been considered a major potential resource of nickel, copper, cobalt and perhaps manganese. A decade ago there was a period of intense evaluation of nodule fields, especially those lying between the Clarion and Clipperton Fracture Zones in international waters southeast of Hawaii. There, nodules are abundant and of high grade (average of 2.4% Ni+Cu+Co). The evaluation activity has since declined, but a recent agreement on lease boundaries among all interested parties may lead to a resurgence of work. Indeed, French and Japanese groups have pushed ahead with field and economic assessments.The Southwest Pacific, where there are large nodule fields in the waters of the Cook Islands and Kiribati, has seen considerable assessment of resources in the last ten years, especially through a major field programme of the Japanese Metal Mining Agency. The best prospect appears to be in the South Penrhyn Basin, in Cook Islands waters, where nodules are very abundant but of only moderate grade (1% Ni+Cu+Co). Using a cut-off of 5 kg of wet nodules per m2, Cronan (1989) and Cronan et al. (1989) have estimated the total resource to be a huge 110 million tonnes of Ni+Cu+Co.

Many flotation plants use pH to adjust the pulp chemistry of their system to achieve optimum separation. For example, in a sequential lead/zinc circuit the pH during sphalerite flotation is increased to 10.5 or greater to depress galena and pyrite, thereby improving selectivity for sphalerite. However, maintaining a pulp at a particular pH value does not necessarily provide the operator with an abundance of information regarding the chemistry changes occurring within a plant. This paper provides the reader with a number of pulp chemical observations in several plants, showing that the same trends are noted over time; however, the magnitude of the measured values do change. Further, the changes in magnitude are invariably associated with a change in mineralogy. Thus, is measuring pH enough? Can the Eh, dissolved oxygen and temperature be measured at the industrial scale reliably? And, are these measurements useful?
