Supergene processes in banded iron formation (BIF) result in important dissolution, material transport and simultaneous disorder of the residual bands. The rock physical properties such as density, porosity and rheology change during the weathering attack. The itabirite, Paleoproterozoic metamorphic BIF from Quadrilßtero Ferrffero (QF) û Brazil, shows several weathered facies. Strong linking between topographic surface, rock density and iron grade occurs within the weathered zones. This linking is due to partial dissolution of silica and carbonate from itabirite and gravitational rotation and break of the remaining blades, generating kink-like slump structures. The original itabirite density, 3.7 t/m3, decrease at the first leaching steps, until 2.7 t/m3, and increase at the end of the leaching process until 3.6 t/m3. Iron grade increases from 38 per cent to 68 per cent and depressions (sinkhole), subsequently filled by Cenozoic basinal sediments, are developed over the enrichment zones. The formation of important supergene iron ore deposits of QF is intimately related to such a process. Several iron deposits at QF, such as Pico do Itabirito, Fßbrica Nova, Casa de Pedra, Tamanduß, -gua Claras, Cappo Xavier, etc., reveal the aspects related to the proposed evolution, implying that the formational process of the soft iron ores had a regional character. Granular medium model helped in the understanding of the development of the structure and the formation of the deposits. A numerical model has been developed in order to simulate a leaching system in a two-dimensional matrix, composed of two types of materials: leachable and unleachable. Equal volume proportion and vertical banding were considered. Drilling data was used as multipoint attractors to remove leachable matrix nodes.

Cliffs Natural Resources Pty Ltd (CNR) operates iron ore mines in the Koolyanobbing region of Western Australia. Ore is mined from three locations, separated by many kilometres. The ore is stockpiled at these locations, according to an in-house ore classification system (based on grade and source) and then trucked to the crushing and screening plant at Koolyanobbing. Lump and fines products are railed to Esperance for ship loading and export to Asian customers. CNR prides itself on the relatively low inter-shipment grade variability of the products. The Koolyanobbing crusher is fed using a daily blend plan, generated to maintain lump and fines product grades within acceptable tolerance ranges around targets. Achieving low variability requires predicting lump and fines grades as accurately as practical from the estimated head grades of the ROM ores potentially going into the blend. The grade prediction model may be either a direct prediction of crushed lump and fines grades and lump percentage, or be split into two stages: the bias between blasthole estimated head grade and crusher head grade and then the lump-fines algorithm for splitting the head grade between lump and fines products. The lump-fines algorithm comprises the percentage of lump and the difference between the lump and fines grades. We describe a weighted least squares (WLS) regression model for predicting crusher grades and lump proportion from the estimated head grade for Fe, P, SiO2, Al2O3, Mn and S. The method is applied to CNR production data, where the regression model explains approximately 60 per cent of the variance in the crushed ore grade, for both lump and fines. A further small but significant improvement in prediction can be achieved by including the ore classification data in the model. The regression errors exhibit strong positive serial correlation, indicating trends in grade error across multiple blend records. To compensate for the longer-term error, an exponentially smoothed model was developed and applied to the daily grade blend errors. This gave an increase in the longer-term variance explained and therefore an improvement in grade prediction.

In 2005, Glass Earth Limited (GEL) commissioned two large area detailed airborne geophysical programmes in the Taupo Volcanic Zone (TVZ). In the first survey Bell Geospace Ltd of Scotland conducted an Air-FTG« (airborne Full Tensor Gravity Gradiometry) survey covering 2338km2 at 300m line spacing. The second survey by UTS Geophysics, Australia included detailed airborne magnetic, radiometric and digital terrain data capture covering 5341km2 at 150m line spacing.   From the detailed geophysical data collected it is possible to identify major deeply penetrative crustal structures within the TVZ, as well as define subsurface geological features, such as intrusive bodies and alteration zones. These major deep crustal structures are thought to have a controlling influence on the distribution of epithermal gold mineralising systems, and along the corridors defined by these deep crustal zones, the chances of discovery of an economic epithermal gold discovery are greatly increased.   In this paper GEL gives some examples of the application of its integrated data driven approach to exploration in the TVZ at both regional and project scale. The paper focuses on how GEL identifies regional scale highly prospective deep crustal structures. Then, using the Horohoro epithermal gold system as an example, we show how GEL applies innovative geological and geophysical data processing to model and understand detailed subsurface geology, focusing subsequent exploration to ensure the best opportunity for a new economic epithermal gold discovery.

Computer software systems have been developed to assist in a wide range of specific mine planning and scheduling applications. In selecting appropriate systems for any mining operation it is apparent that certain features have particular advantages for each mine site. The ideal solution to this problem is to select a range of systems which best relate to sections of each mining operation. This approach raises potential data linking difficulties where output from one system is incompatible with input requirements for other systems. A study at the University of Queensland investigated the problems related to the integration of a number of mine planning and scheduling software systems. The project used data from large scale coal strip mining operations in Central Queensland. Two major computer packages used extensively in the study were the SURPAC mine planning and XPAC mine scheduling systems. Dragline and truck and shovel operations were analysed in the project. Results of the work have been directly applied at the mine site to assist current strip design by effectively automating the design procedure. This enabled sensitivity studies to determine the effects of changing dragline working levels and varying pit dimensions. Coal blending studies and procedures to optimise operations have been investigated using linear programming within a spreadsheet software application. Output from the SURPAC and XPAC programs was directly linked to the linear program for this analysis. The simulation program GPSS/PC was also used in a similar manner to assess optimisation parameters.

The orientation and location of the hydraulic legs are two very important parameters for the design of shield supports in longwall mining. Studies have shown that leg orientations and locations of a support determine the magnitude, orientation and location of the resultant support resistance which in turn affects the efficiency of the support and the ability to prevent premature roof falls in the face area. Therefore, there is a need to determine the best combination of orientation and location of the hydraulic legs for each type of shield support under various geological conditions. This paper attempts to evaluate, first, the individual role of each parameter (orientation or location) and then to determine their integrating functions in terms of ground control employing finite element analysis. Three types of shield support (2-leg and 4-leg shields and 4-leg chock shield) with various combination of the parameters are simulated and their effects are discussed. The optimum design for each parameter for each support type under various geological conditions is also discussed and recommended.

Orica Mining Services (Orica) in partnership with Coal and Allied’s Hunter Valley Operations (HVO) has developed a risk management process to maximise mining efficiency whilst controlling vibration and maintaining critical electricity continuity to New South Wales (NSW) electricity grid in the Riverview Pit. The issue is a high tension tower which supplies electricity located within 40 m of mining and blasting activities. The process involved developing an understanding of the relationship between vibration, explosives, geology and the location of the blasting in the geological horizon. From this an optimum methodology for blasting in each region was developed.

Tourmaline-bearing rocks are a rare rock type of Suites 3, 4 and 5 at Broken Hill. Minor laminated plagioclase-quartz-tourmaline rocks occur in association with the quartz- magnetite rocks of Suite 3 with the greatest abundance of tourmaline-bearing rocks present in Suite 4 intimately associated with lode horizon, scheelite mineralisation and zinc mineralistion - all approximate strike equivalents of the Broken Hill Pb-Zn-Ag deposit. Bedded quartz-tourmaline rocks, tourmalinites, tourmaline-rich pelite and tourmaline-bearing lode horizon have been recorded from suite 4. The bedded tourmaline rocks rarely display cross bedding, graded bedding, slump structures and small scale intraformational breccias. Minor tourmaline-gahnite-bearing pelites are present in Suite 5. The sedimentary structures, metamorphic textures, the stratigraphic position of the tourmaline-rocks and the presence of quartz-tourmaline-gahnite-spessartine (-fluorapatite) lode rocks indicates that the mineralisation at Broken Hill and the tourmaline-rich rocks are all products of submarine exhalative hot spring systems which were most active during deposition of Suite 4 rocks. Tourmaline is chemically different from that associated with granitic activity and from other submarine exhalative tourmaline-rich rocks because the premetamorphic alteration at Broken Hill involved addition of Fe, Ti and F and subtraction of Mg - a feature reflected in the chemistry of tourmaline from Broken Hill.

"One of the contributing factors to the extreme cost escalation in the first decade of the 21st century was the increase in the amount and cost of engineering work that went into studies and projects. Various reasons for this were identified, including unsatisfactory productivity due to a shortage of experienced/qualified engineers, the increased complexity and infrastructure requirements of many projects due to location, metallurgy that is more challenging and increasing environmental and social requirements. These conditions often led to unsatisfactory project results in terms of cost and schedule blowouts and created a loss of confidence – both internally and externally – in the industry’s ability to complete projects on time and on budget.Technical fundamentals aside, the experience and effectiveness of project teams has had, and continues to have, a major impact on project cost, schedule and ramp-up to nameplate capacity and operating parameters. There are unfortunately too many examples of where project teams have not been as effective as they could or should have been, all to the ultimate detriment of the project.Using the authors’ extensive experience on both owner’s and engineer’s teams, this paper discusses some of the main reasons for suboptimal team, and hence project, performance and offers thoughts on how best to build and maintain project teams. The analysis and conclusions drawn are built around the Tuckman model of group development known as ‘forming-storming-norming-performing’, which was first proposed some 50 years ago. In the narrow stopes of South African gold mines, rockbreaking is carried out by drilling and blasting with safety fuse and igniter cord being used as the initiation system. The fuse/gniter cord system is used primarily because of its low cost, however several limitations of this method include: inaccurate delay time, unreliable firing, inflexible application to varied configurations, and the absence of dynamic interaction between holes. Alternative initiation systems that incorporate millisecond timing are being developed to overcome the limitations of fuse(tgniter cord systems. Current investigations by the Stoping Technology Division of the Chamber of Mines Research Organization (COMRO) into the effects of millisecond initiation are being conducted at a deep test site. Experimental blasts using various millisecond delays and the independent firing of holes with fuse/igniter cord are being studied in order to quantify the influence of delay time on the blasting process and to identify the best methods of applying millisecond initiation systems. The effect of design variables such as delay time, hole firing pattern, stemming, and panel layout are discussed. Blast results including throw distance and direction, muckpile profile and rock cleaning times are used in the discussion of different combinations of blasting variables.

With staff productivity and retention a crucial factor in the longevity of AustraliaÆs mining industry, some mining companies are increasing their focus on the health and well-being of their people, to minimise the risks of deteriorating health in an ageing workforce. Many of AustraliaÆs mining operations rely heavily on long distance commuter (LDC) rosters, which are argued to have a significant impact upon worker health, wellbeing and lifestyle choices. The potential impact of workforce health on mine safety performance, efficiency and operating practice is an interesting additional line of enquiry. Food choice, exercise and recreation initiatives offer living and working conditions that æempower healthy choicesÆ in the shift worker community, but do not guarantee improved worker wellbeing. This paper explores first-hand the experiences of one individual over two and a half years of employment at different mine sites, under different shift conditions and across different operating crews. Heavy fuel oil has been injected into blast furnaces in order to reduce the coke rate, to improve productivity and to control the furnace heat condition. However, in the first oil crisis at the end of 1973, it became necessary to develop an injection technique of new fuels into blast furnaces to reduce oil consumption. In Kobe Steel, Ltd., it was thought that the injection of a coal-oil mixture (COM) into blast furnaces could be developed in a shorter time than pulverised coal injection. The development of this technique was under- taken in 1974, and COM was injected through two tuyeres of the No.3 blast furnace at the Kobe works in 1977 and 1978. In addition, in order to study the combust- ibility of COM and the phenomena in the tuyere zone, the development of a gas sampling method was under- taken in 1975. In this paper, the results of the injection tests and gas sampling tests are reported.

Based on the blasting crater theory, the equation between k under typical cases and burden line, charge height was obtained by open pit bench blasting analysis model. The model was calculated with mine production blasting. The efficient and profit-maximising daily and long-term management of the Vera Nancy resource depends on decisions based upon assay data. This paper examines the range of sample sources, the methods of sample collection, assay techniques and Quality Assurance used by the mine. The orebody has a relatively low nugget effect for a gold mine (around 25 per cent) and this greatly assists in reducing sampling error and producing reliable assay data for production decision-making. Reconciliation between mine and back-calculated mill grades generally sees the mine under-calling mill grades by around four per cent.

The 4 km long Huguenot Toll Tunnel in the Western Cape region of South Africa celebrated its tenth anniversary on 18 March 1998. At present a single (South) bore with bi-directional traffic flow is operational. The North bore was originally excavated but not lined and equipped.The tunnel is fitted with a semi-transverse ventilation system comprising 45/350 kW two speed fresh-air and 1 MW exhaust air fans at each of the portals. These provide ventilation through fresh and exhaust air ducts above the ceiling separated by movable partition doors. Secondary air ducts deliver air at low level. The fan control depends on the levels of CO pollution or visibility measured at six positions along the tunnel.The system performed well during initial tests and under conditions of low traffic volumes. As traffic volumes increased, and user complaints of bad air in the tunnel were received on several occasions, we realised that we had a problem. Tests confirmed that natural airflow within the tunnel induced by prevailing meteorological conditions outside the portals affected the performance of the ventilation system causing a plug of bad air to be trapped at varying positions along the operating tunnel.The control systems in the tunnel are presently being upgraded as described by Gray, Rieckert and Bullock (1998). As part of the retrofit we are implementing a new control strategy for the ventilation system which takes into account the external weather conditions. This paper discusses the 24 month long meteorological data gathering exercise, which is on-going, and explores the philosophies planned for controlling the ventilation system. The correlation between winds external to the tunnel and induced airflow inside the tunnel are examined. The effects of the weather induced airflow on the existing ventilation system are considered and proposals given for taking these effects into account in the new control strategy. These include the implementation of an expert system to predict ambient airflow from prevailing weather conditions, and the use of airflow measurements taken in the uncompleted North bore as a cross-check.The paper highlights the need to take cognisance of external weather conditions when designing tunnel ventilation systems.

A production information management system (PIMS) was recently implemented at Queensland NickelÆs Yabulu Refinery. Although a strong business case was developed to justify the significant investment in PIMS some potential beneficiaries remained sceptical of the anticipated benefits. The decision to install PIMS was justified as the on-line availability of continuous production data enabled the optimisation of some crucial operations resulting in significant cost savings, improved throughput and final product quality. Furthermore the rapid access to extended historical data has allowed the cause of repeated failure of equipment to be determined. The investment is expected to pay for itself within two years and has already contributed towards significant savings. This paper focuses on some of the diverse production improvements gained and compares the anticipated benefits in the business case to those achieved. A brief outline of the phased implementation of the OSIsoft PI data historian and complementary client software at Yabulu is included, along with details of the lessons learned.

In addition, the outcome of negotiations with overseas customers is often uncertain for long periods, or even unfavourable. The industries and companies represented at this Conference are in an arena of high competition, risk taking and enormous capital outlay. They are industries which our overseas markets (rightly or wrongly) have criticised for industrial relations problems, unreliable production and uncertain deliveries. They are industries which have an urgent need to be cost effective and competitive at all levels of activity.A critical factor in the mining and metallurgy industries is, therefore, its human resources and its human resource management. It requires the full use of available talent, innovation, skills and qualifications within its workforce, and the appropriate management of these resources.

Quantitative mineralogy is an established discipline in the geosciences and is aimed at providing mineral grade and texture information for geological and mineral processing applications. The two core technologies underpinning Quantitative Mineralogical Analysis (QMA) are Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) in combination with Energy-dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDS). Technologies such as QEMSCAN and MLA are now routinely used to optimise the performance of large-scale mineral processing plants in the base and precious metal sectors. One of the major disadvantages of the QMA methods used today is extensive sample preparation requirements which make application of this technique to real-time mineralogical characterization not feasible. A breakthrough has been achieved by the National Research Council Canada in collaboration with CRC ORE by developing a novel Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) based technology capable of real-time mineralogical characterization of process streams without sample preparation. The potential applications of this technology include, but not limited to, in-pit muck piles, underground draw points, cross-belt analysis as well as slurries. This paper describes the development of the LIBS-based technology from a proof-of-concept (TRL2) to the construction of a prototype sensor and its validation in a simulated environment (TRL5). Future work is being planned to test and further validate the LIBS sensor on a mine-site which will progress the technology to its next readiness level (TRL6).

Raise drilling (or raise boring) is not a new technology or methodology. The first raise drilling machine was developed by The Robbins Company (TRC) of the USA in 1962. TRC manufactured the first tunnel boring machine (TBM) in 1952 and Jim Robbins, the founder of the company wanted to ‘turn the TBM concept on its head’ so to speak.Many improvements have ensued in the 50 years since the first machine. Such improvements include advances in the drill rod and thread design, cutters and reaming heads. Raise boring would not have been possible without the development of the tungsten carbide insert cutters and there have been big advances in both the carbide technology and in the mechanical design of the cutters.Over time mines have developed deeper with a greater use of diesel equipment resulting in greater ventilation requirements. This in turn means larger and deeper ventilation shafts. There have also been improvements in directional drilling techniques. This all combines with the need and ability to construct larger shafts using the safe method of raise drilling. With suitable geotechnical conditions the RBR900VF is capable of drilling shafts to a diameter and depth of greater than 8 m and 2000 m respectively. Greater diameters are possible over shorter lengths with suitable ground conditions.The RBR900VF was designed and manufactured to specifications developed by Macmahon. This machine has the greatest thrust and torque capability of any machine in the world. It enables cutters to be more heavily loaded in the larger diameter heads and this is essential for efficient rock excavation. Additional features of the new machine include minimal manual handling to provide a safer working environment and higher strength steel for the drill rods providing additional safety margin.CITATION:Wood, R J, 2014. As Australia’s mining industry painfully retrenches, mining executives and managers strive to remain viable by seeking significant productivity increases directly through process improvement and indirectly by improving leadership and workplace culture, the most powerful determinant of productivity. Culture is the combination of people’s attitudes and behaviour, together with leadership values and focus.Comprehensive new and automated data collection and management systems promise much for improving productivity, yet despite rapid advances in measurement and sharing of data, the use of data can reduce productivity unless behavioural aspects are considered and designed as part of implementation. This is because systems drive behaviour that in turn shapes attitudes to determine culture.Experience from many mine sites and other industries in three countries confirm that the most powerful drivers of people’s behaviour are the Measurement-Analysis-Reporting system and business leadership.This paper discusses fundamentals of practical, statistically valid process measurement, analysis and reporting systems before discussing associated leadership considerations for sustained improvement in safety, productivity, employee retention, leadership, accountability and commercial returns.The key to productivity improvement is improving core processes and important support processes. In turn, the key to process improvement is identifying the major process components and their interaction by measuring and then analysing their variation and level of performance. Understanding variation is often neglected yet is usually highly significant. It is essential that the fundamentals of statistically valid yet practical process and data analysis are understood and incorporated into system design to ensure productive, informed behaviour.The design and use of Measurement-Analysis-Reporting systems influences behaviour most profoundly and determines people’s effectiveness. Behavioural aspects are detailed by focusing on six primary drivers of human behaviour and five basic systems for managing businesses. These are integrated in a seven-step process and productivity improvement methodology that combines statistical, analytical, systems and behavioural factors.The paper includes development, implementation and tracking of a project plan for improving management and leadership systems to drive aligned behaviours. The Fimiston Open Pit (commonly referred to as the æSuper PitÆ) is a part of the Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines Pty Ltd (KCGM) operation in Kalgoorlie-Boulder. KCGM manages the Fimiston Open Pit, the Mt Charlotte underground mine, the Fimiston Mill and the Gidji Roaster for its Joint Venture Owners, Newmont and Barrick Australia. KCGM produces up to 850 000 ounces of gold per year. The KCGM operations are located on the historical Golden Mile on the outskirts of the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder, about 600 kilometres east of Perth Western Australia. This traditionally underground mining centre has been worked since 1893, yielding in excess of 50 Moz of gold from ore with an average head grade of 10 g/t. This represents approximately ten per cent of the gold produced in Australia and one per cent of the gold produced in the world. The Fimiston Open Pit is essentially an aggregation of what were known as the Judd, South, Paringa, Croesus/Eclipse, Central, Brownhill, Drysdale, Morrison, North and Horseshoe pits into one continuous large-scale operation. The old Fimiston Underground Operations (included the Main, Croesus, Chaffers, Lake View, and Perseverance shafts) were also located within the area of the Fimiston Open Pit. The underground operations closed in 1992 due to high mining costs.
