Conventional techniques for resource estimation generally involve the laborious analysis of variograms and the specification of parameters for covariance functions. In large deposits, construction of resource models and their update require significant amount of manual work, expert knowledge and time. In this paper we take a machine learning view to the problem of resource estimation. This is a non-parametric Bayesian method, leading to automatic parameter estimation (learning). Through Bayesian learning, the parameters of the model can be obtained by optimising a quantity known as the marginal likelihood. The main advantage of this approach over conventional maximum likelihood estimators is that the objective function incorporates the OccamÆs razor principle. This allows the comparison of different statistical models û for example, models designed with different covariance functions û and naturally penalises complexity, thus avoiding overfitting. Our technique presents significant flexibility for the definition of mean and covariance functions and permits the usage of more sophisticated models.The second contribution of this work is the formulation of a data fusion mechanism that continuously updates the resource model. As mining progresses, more information becomes available. For example, the hardness of the rocks can be measured while drilling blast holes, grades of ore and contaminants are obtained from cone logging. This information is in general available at a finer spatial resolution but can be more uncertain. The data fusion mechanism can seamlessly estimate the uncertainties of the different types of information and fuse them as new measurements are acquired. This procedure can significantly improve the quality of the resource model, defining new grounds for stochastic mine planning. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach in estimating iron ore deposits by integrating information about different grades.

The effect of sodium sulfite (Na2SO3) on the flotation behaviour of bornite and tennantite is reported in this work. Flotation tests were performed using pure minerals of bornite and tennantite under various concentrations of sodium sulfite at pH 9. The flotation results indicated that sodium sulfite exhibited a depressing effect on the floatability of bornite in the presence of 0.1 mM PAX. However, tennantite remained floatable after the addition of sodium sulfite in the presence of 0.1 mM PAX. The flotation tests using mixed bornite and tennantite confirmed the flotation results of single minerals. Surface characterisation using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) was performed to explain the flotation results. A mechanism is proposed based on the XPS analysis results.

"Mine-derived sedimentation in rivers can have significant impacts on the processes and features of the receiving environment and impact on communities reliant on this environment. However, identifying and quantifying the contribution of mine-derived sediment to the receiving environment can be complex. This is particularly the case in remote environments and where little/no baseline assessments have been undertaken. One approach that can be used involves sediment fingerprinting, whereby a unique tracer is identified within the mine-derived sediment to discriminate between mine- and non-mine derived sediment sources downstream. The technique typically involves sampling of sediment at upstream, control and impact sites and sites within the mine deposit. Laboratory analyses are run on all the samples to determine whether the chemical signature (eg presence/concentration of specific metals) differs between each group of samples. In complex environments where the mine-derived signature may be difficult to detect from a basic review of the data, or where sampling constraints may limit the number of samples for analyses, statistical methods can be used to help identify sediment groups. Removing the ledge formation in the Hall-Heroult cell during the electrolysis process may significantly reduce the energy requirement of the aluminium production process. In the absence of the ledge, however, the sidewall-material types become heavily restricted since the cryolite is very corrosive at the electrolysis temperatures. This paper study the corrosion behaviour of sintered nickel ferrite, nickel aluminate, and magnesium aluminate refractories (as possible candidates for sidewall material) in molten aluminium and cryolite melts with various alumina content at 980°C. Immersion tests of refractories with various porosity were conducted to assess the suitability of the refractories in the corrosive environment of the electrolysis cells. Microstructural change of the refractory after immersion were analysed using secondary scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Sampling of the melts were taken at 0, 10 min, 30 min, and each hour up to 6 hrs, and subsequently analysed by Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP) spectroscopy. Based on the projected concentration of the refractories constituents in the melts, it was predicted that the corrosion rate of NiFe2O4, NiAl2O4 and MgAl2O4 in cryolite with 11 wt per cent Al2O3 were 461 × 103, 1.03 × 103, and 798 × 103 cm/a, respectively. Much lower corrosion rate of 2.3 cm/a for NiFe2O4, 2.6 cm/a for NiAl2O4 and 0.3 cm/a for MgAl2O4 were predicted if the refractories in contact with aluminium melts. Erosion played an important role in the corrosion as the concentration of the refractory constituents in the melts were beyond its solubility limit. It is therefore crucial to increase the densities of the refractory and improve its wetting characteristics.

Mont-Wright mining complex is an important asset of ArcelorMittal located in the province of Quebec, Canada. It is composed by Mont-Wright and Fire Lake mines, operating 365 days per annum, and producing 25 Mtpa of iron ore concentrate with 66 per cent Fe. Mont-Wright concentration plant is composed by seven lines with a flow sheet encompassing AG/SAG milling, primary and secondary classification stages, spiral concentrators (rougher, cleaner and recleaner stages) and dewatering unit operations. In this context, an equation called ‘Wrec’ was developed in 1971 with the objective of estimating the mass recovery of the different blocks in the beneficiation plant and support the mining planning works of Mont-Wright complex. This equation was based on the correlation between the results of heavy liquid tests performed with drill core samples and spiral concentrators pilot scale tests, returning an estimative of concentrator yield. However, since its first development, no updates have been done in the equation, which lead to some deviations from expected recoveries in the last years. This is probably due to the changes in the process and in the ore fed into the concentrator during the period. In this way, the study presented here corresponds to the execution of heavy liquid/spirals pilot scale tests with 26 composite samples collected at Mont-Wright deposit aiming at revising and updating ‘Wrec’ equation. Based on test work results, an updated formula was established to estimate the plant recovery and a comparison performed using industrial data showed that the old formula overestimated the real yield by 5.40 per cent, on average. At the end of the study the new equation was incorporated into the mining planning process.

PT Freeport Indonesia is a copper-gold mine operation located in West Papua, Indonesia about 3500 km east of Jakarta. Current ore production is about 270 000 tpd, of which 30 000 tpd comes from underground. In the future, the production from underground will be gradually increased to reach a maximum of 115 000 tpd, as the Grasberg open pit production decreases. The current and future challenge for PT Freeport Indonesia is to fill the quota of underground miners, as Indonesia does not have a long culture of underground work. At present, there are only three active underground mines in Indonesia. The lack of underground skilled labour incited the company to develop its own skilled workforce. In the mean time, to overcome the shortage of personnel, the underground management had to find a way to improve the productivity. Since 21 May 1998, PT Freeport Indonesia Underground Mine has operated with the new roster of two rotating shifts a day, 11 hours per shift. The previous schedule consisted of three nine-hour shifts per day, six days a week, for a total of 26 working days in a month. This change was intended to increase the productivity of the miners. With the previous roster, studies determined that the effective working time was only seven hours per shift. The new roster produces an improvement of effective working hours to about nine hours per shift. As a result, total production has increased by 33 per cent and the utilisation of production equipment has increased by 16.5 per cent. This paper describes the background of the decision to change the work schedule, the study carried out to evaluate the benefits and drawbacks of the new shift roster, the challenges, and then compares the results for various parameters between the old schedule and the new one.

To accommodate the fast growing need for services in Singapore’s Marina Bay downtown area, Marina South, the construction of a common services tunnel (CST) was required. The CST includes various services such as telecom cables, power lines and water pipes. A deep excavation and temporary earth retaining system (TERS) was required to facilitate the construction of the tunnels. Marina Bay is reclaimed land over thick soft marine clay which is likely to be still consolidating. The deep soft marine clay poses a big challenge for deep excavations in downtown areas where highways and sensitive structures are close by. This paper presents a case study of part of the CST Phase 1B and 2 at Marina South, in particular a 26 m deep excavation supported by a 46 m diameter temporary caisson. The construction started in late 2006 and the basic structure was completed in early 2011. The caisson was formed by 1.0 m thick overlapping diaphragm wall panels with a capping beam and three ring beams at different depths. Two-dimensional finite element analyses were conducted to predict the ground settlement, lateral displacement, bending moment and hoop stresses in the diaphragm wall and ring beams during different excavation stages. A comprehensive instrumentation and monitoring scheme was established to verify the design predictions, control excavation safety and trigger the contingency plan to protect public safety. A great range of contacting equipment is used in solvent extraction. However, a tower filled with a regular packing offers many advantages in the direct extraction from slurries. A study was made of the flow of a dense slurry through a packed tower in which the continuous phase was kerosene. The grid type packing, which was preferentially wetted by the slurry, had slats inclined at an angle of 30¦, to the horizontal. On the sur- face of the slats there were uniformly spaced longitudinal indentat- ions. These were of a height slightly less than the film thickness and divided the slurry discharging from the bottom of the slats into a number of uniform streams. When slurry entered the tower it was distributed by means of a troughs and weirs type of distributor. Because of the relatively high slurry velocities that occur at the entry region, it was necess- ary to have the distributor and the first two grids above the solvent level. The interface at the bottom of the tower was located at the mid-point of the bottom grid, so that the slurry entered the interface as a continuous film across the full width of the slats. Using the above system, stable flow with low entrainment was achieved at slurry flow rates of 3.4 mis/cm/sec. This would be equivalent to a flow rate of 177 gallons per minute through a tower of cross-section 4 ft 4 in. by 4 ft 10 in., or 1200 tons per day of solids of specific gravity 2.6 when the pulp density was 65 per cent. Previous tests indicated that a total tower height of about 30 ft would be required for a recovery of better than 99 per cent.

Material transport plays a significant role in the efficiency of horizontal grinding mills - autogenous (AG)/semi-autogenous (SAG)/ball mills. The magnitude of benefits that can be achieved with efficient material transport in AG/SAG mills has been demonstrated in a greenfield milling operation at Mirabela MineratpoÆs SantaRita Nickel operation located in north eastern Bahia in Brazil. This grinding circuit was commissioned in October 2009, was designed as a typical SABC circuit to grind 4.6 Mt/a (575 t/h) to produce a P80 of 125 ¦m with ten to 12 per cent ball charge in the SAG mill. However, it has been operating as an ABC circuit without any grinding media in SAG mill. The nameplate design capacity was achieved in few days and was gradually increased to an average of +800 t/h, still operating in ABC mode. The Santa Rita grinding circuit consists of one 30 ft + 15.4 ft 8.5 MW SAG mill fitted with Outotec patented Turbo Pulp Lifters (TPLÖ) in closed circuit with a HP400 short head pebble crusher and one 20 ft + 28.4 ft 5.5 MW Ball Mill in closed circuit with a Warman cyclone cluster fitted with 10 + 26 in CAVEX cyclones. This paper examines the comminution design process, operating philosophies, experiences, post commissioning optimisation and future development works. This paper outlines a laboratory-based design method, founded in critical state soil mechanics, for identification of an appropriate compaction specification to ensure dilative conditions prevail across the design TSF stress range. The method makes use of the critical state line (CSL) and consolidation tests prepared at varying compactive efforts. The CSL and consolidation curves are plotted together in e-log p’ space, with the compaction curves transformed from vertical effective stress to mean effective stress using the coefficient of earth pressure at rest (K0). Consideration is given to the sensitivity of K0 as it is generally not available during the design phase. An example of the design method is illustrated with laboratory data.

Rampura Agucha open pit mine has successfully been excavated to a depth of 320 m, incorporating multistage working. The key to success is the implementation of presplitting as control blast measures at every stage of mining, including intermediate cut backs, in addition to the final wall. The major challenges encountered in establishing presplitting in the hang wall as compared to the footwall of the mine are:reversely dipping foliation, ie dipping into the hang wall itselfstriking obliquely at an angle of 20–30° with regards to the general strike of the pit wallthe presence of numerous geological planes of weaknesses like major faults, slips, etc.Control blast parameters like hole inclination, spacing and stand-off with buffer row were chosen initially from the literature survey and were subsequently fine-tuned by field trials to the mine geo-mining conditions of the hang wall. Olympic Dam is the eighth largest Cu deposit and the largest U deposit in the world, with approximately 35 million tonnes of contained Cu and 1.2 million tonnes of U. The most recent resource estimate was for 2.95 billion tonnes of mineralised material with average grades of 1.2 per cent Cu, 0.4 kg/t U, 0.5 g/t Au, 2.6 g/t Ag as contained mineral resources. Olympic Dam is expected to produce >200 000 tonnes of Cu and 4200 tonnes of U3O8 from 9.8 million tonnes of ore in 2004, making it the 12th largest Cu producer in the world. One of the impediments to achieving targeted rates of production has been oversize material (>0.9 m) reporting to stope draw points. A major contributor to oversize material may be overbreak along pre-existing structural weaknesses from stope walls and backs during the production life of a stope. Underbreaking to structures can also have a detrimental effect on the performance of a stope. In an effort to understand the influence of structural geology on stope performance, WMC Resources and SRK Consulting partnered during 2003 to refine the current system of structural mapping, and to use historical data to produce a structural interpretation covering a large part of the mining area. The interpretation has been wireframed in DATAMINETM into a three-dimensional structural framework model. To date, there are more than 600 structures of >50 m strike length incorporated into the structural framework model, which covers a study area 1500 m + 600 m + 350 m. A back-analysis exercise to assess the influence of interpreted structures on overbreak and underbreak was completed for laser-surveyed stopes.

A comparison was made between chemical analysis and ocular mineral/rock classification in health-based risk assessment of historical mine waste produced between 1625 and 1975. Large parts of the mine waste are heavily weathered and secondary minerals are abundant. The field was divided into several areas from where composite samples were collected. Seventy-five mine waste samples were selected for chemical analysis (As, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb, V and Zn) and ocular mineral/rock classification (silicate, mica, granite/pegmatite, carbonate, iron oxide ore, sulfide ore, distribution between chalcopyrite, sphalerite and galena and distribution between pyrite and pyrrhotite). The waste has been produced in conjunction with mining a complex sulfidic ore with increasing iron oxide content (mainly magnetite) towards the northern part of the field. Elevated concentrations were found for Cd (average 26 mg/kg dw), Cu (average 3500 mg/kg dw), Pb (average 4100 mg/kg dw) and Zn (average 11 000 mg/kg dw). Large differences between average and median values indicated that the data was not normally distributed, ie the metals occur as discrete minerals (eg chalcopyrite, galena and sphalerite). The ocular classification indicated low carbonate content, chalcopyrite dominating over sphalerite and galena in most samples and an even distribution between pyrite and pyrrhotite. Both analytical and ocular mineral/rock classification data were combined into a common matrix that was evaluated using multivariate statistics. Principal component analysis (PCA) showed, for instance, that chromium and vanadium were mostly associated with harder minerals and rocks. PCA also indicated that a similar graphical picture could be obtained for chemical data and ocular mineral/rock classification data, respectively. The comparison indicates that ocular mineral/rock classification can replace or at least reduce the numbers of chemical analysis in health- based risk assessment of historical mine waste.

One of the regular tasks of geotechnical and mining engineers is the measurement and management of deformation in underground excavations. Although several methods are used to do so, the incumbent methodologies for monitoring deformation and ground support serviceability are limited to the use of visual observations or measurements at discrete points, resulting in a qualitative assessment only. The introduction of LiDAR technology allows a quantitative assessment across the entire excavation volume and its rock surface, by collecting a full three-dimensional image of the entirety of an excavation such as an underground drive, decline, or a tunnel. Comparisons between epochs of complete 3D data coverage allows for change detection over time that doesn’t feature otherwise typical omissions. The implementation of regular scanning has shown to be highly advantageous for mines with swelling or squeezing ground, but also at mines with rapid deformation. Despite the LiDAR potential, its adoption has been slow. A key reason for that is that working with point clouds is foreign to most geotechnical engineers. Point clouds have long been the realm of surveyors, but to fully adopt their use in geomechanics requires retraining, upskilling, and devotion by the individuals and the company. Sites are already stretched, so often there are insufficient resources to be applied to bringing the new technology into use. The solution to this hurdle is to partner with subject matter experts to achieve the desired high-quality outcomes without the commitment of time by geotechnical personnel. This paper presents a new solution of fully automated raw LiDAR point cloud data processing that not only enables geotechnical engineers to avoid having to learn unrelated skills by allowing for deformation monitoring without associated training or expertise, but it also provides instant reporting results as well as a sophisticated database with features otherwise not available. All data processing time and effort is completely replaced by an automated process which at the same time opens up the opportunity to monitor many more excavation volumes at a higher frequency than is possible with conventional tools and methodology.

The Telégrafo copper – gold deposit is located in the Centinela district of the Antofagasta region in northern Chile. Telégrafo is a porphyry copper deposit of Eocene – Oligocene age which has a total mineral resource in measured, indicated and inferred categories equal to 2.6 billion tonnes with an average grade of 0.38 per cent copper.Currently the project is in the prefeasibility study phase, including an infill drilling campaign to improve the knowledge of the deposit that should result in an improvement of the mineral resource classification. In this context was decided to review the classification criteria in order to optimise the drill hole density necessary to support the project.This paper presents an application of conditional simulation to evaluate the risk related to drill hole spacing, using a geostatistical approach that mimics the process of evaluation of resources from the perspective of geological modelling and grade estimation. The first step of the approach is the generation of conditional simulations using the available samples to generate several plausible scenarios of the deposit in terms of copper grades and geological units. These scenarios are considered as the unknown reality of the deposit and sampled by synthetic drill holes in order to replicate the geological model process and copper resource estimation. In this way it is possible to establish differences between the possible scenarios and the generated resource estimation models for several simulated drill hole spacing alternatives. These differences or errors can then be quantified in terms of estimated mean, metal content and tonnage over different production volumes.The resulting errors were useful in assisting the decision making process related to the design of drill hole spacing for each category of mineral resource in the Telégrafo project, and to redistribute the budget associated to the drill campaigns for the next stage of the project.

In 1948, it became clear that the ventilation system of The Zinc Corporation Limited and New Broken Hill Consolidated Limited mines, would be inadequate for future operations. The,paper describes in detail the process of designing an entirely new ventilation system for a large underground mining operation. The system was based on a single new upcast airway to be located on the boundary of the two properties, which were to be ventilated in parallel as two separate ventilating districts.From calculations of resistance, and assessments of future air requirements, the duties of a new exhaust fan to be located on the collar of the upcast airway were specified as 700,000 cubic feet per minute at 2·6 in. w.g. total pressure for initial operation in 1953 increasing to a maximum of 900,000 c.f.m. at 3·6 in. w:g. total pressure ten years later. The economic size of the new airway was calculated from a consideration of the first thirty years operation of the system, and it was decided to provide a 20 ft. diameter concrete-lined shaft.The new system went into operation five years after the initial planning, and the effect of the difference between actual and predicted rates and distribution or production are discussed. The final result was entirely satisfactory.INTRODUCTIONThe first proposal for an investigation of The Zinc Corporation Limited-New Broken Hill Consolidated Limited ventilation system with a view to putting it on a proper technical basis was made in 1938. Philosopher, essayist, poet and novelist.The minerals industry requires specific technical expertise in mining and mineral process engineering, geoscience, environmental science and social sciences to maintain and operate its current business and to develop future projects. A steady supply of new graduates is essential to replace not only retirees, but also those who left the industry during the recent downturn. The supply of trained graduates is however not instantaneous, and there is a four-year lag from entry into university to graduation. It is essential that this lag in human resource supply and a likely shortage of knowledgeable, qualified talent is taken into account when considering risks to the business of mining. The shortage of skilled professionals has in the past resulted in unsustainable salary expectations and is likely to pose financial and execution risk to new projects. This paper will review some recent statistics of students in training from around the world and explore what action is required to not only sustain the training courses that provide future ready talent to the mining industry, but also ensure that graduates from these courses are equipped to create change and be leaders in the industry. The future prosperity of the industry is dependent on delivering sustainable stakeholder returns through the cycle. This will be achieved by developing capable individuals that can respond to the complex, adaptive challenges facing the industry.*This is an abstract only. The scope of this report is to examine the aforementioned hypothesis by performing a detailed analytical comparison of a P&H electric rope shovel to an O&K diesel powered hydraulic excavator. In order to complement the integrity of the concluding results, two different size categories will be analysed in order to demonstrate that the findings can be extrapolated and applied to all the machinesÆ size classes. These two size classes are categorised by their bucket sizes and they are in the range of 43 - 58 cubic metres and 23 - 26 cubic metres. It should be noted that electric powered hydraulic excavators will not be considered in this report. In order to compare the electric and hydraulic types, the machine variants that will be analysed are commercial cost-effectiveness and operational flexibility. Although operational flexibility can be an ambiguous characteristic, a clear and thorough definition describing its exact meaning has been included. In order to simplify this study, all the data collected for this comparison have been for overburden removal, eliminating the variation that occurs with the movements of the shovel when selectively mining in the ore deposit. Thus, it ensures that all the data that is compared stems from a common origin for all the shovels. In other words the information will be compared when digging in the same material, loading into the same sized haul trucks, and when possible, with the same operators. Theoretical data received form the respective manufacturers, and actual data obtained from Mount Whaleback, was used for this comparison. This leads to the final comparison, where the operational flexibility and the cost-effectiveness are evaluated, with respect to their individual importance, ultimately influencing the final recommendation.

Following the United Nations initiative to fingerprint the origin of conflict materials, the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development has decided to fund a pilot study on coltan ores. Since 2006, our working group has been investigating columbite- tantalite (coltan) mineralisation, especially in Africa, also within the wider framework of establishing certified trade chains. More than 300 samples were obtained from the worldÆs major coltan producing areas. Special attention is, however, directed to samples and concentrates from Ta-Nb-Sn provinces in Africa: Democratic Republic of the Congo, Rwanda, Mozambique, Ethiopia and Namibia. Using state of the art analytical tools, we investigate mineralogical and chemical parameters obtained from columbite-tantalite ores and concentrates in order to distinguish between ore provinces, likely even down to the deposit scale. Methods employed include fully automated electron microscopy (mineral liberation analysis), electron microprobe analysis (major and minor elements), laser ablation plasma-source mass spectrometry (trace elements and U-Pb dating), X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (bulk major and trace elements), X-ray diffraction analysis (mineralogy and structure) and thermal-ionisation mass-spectrometry (U-Pb dating). Major and trace element concentration patterns, mineral assemblages in the ore concentrates, and zoning characteristics in the different pegmatites from Africa distinctly differ from each other. Furthermore, the following age populations are evident:Archaean (>2.6 Ga);Palaeoproterozoic (1.9 - 2.1 Ga);early Neoproterozoic (æKibaranÆ; 0.98 - 0.93 Ga); andlate Neoproterozoic to early Palaeozoic (ca 0.5 Ga). Currently, we focus on the resolution of the fingerprinting system from region via ore province down to deposit scale. Our preliminary analytical results indicate that a certification scheme including fingerprinting of sources of coltan ores is feasible.

Properly designed evapotranspirative (ET) cover systems can greatly reduce the amount of infiltration and groundwater recharge (deep percolation) into potential acid generating mine waste. In arid and semi-arid environments, infrequent precipitation, low measurable subsurface fluxes, spatial variability within mine waste and cover material, and evapotranspiration from below the cover system create challenges to monitoring moisture flux in these systems. Sloped ET single-layer (monolayer) cover depths and a variety of reclamation treatments are being studied at a copper tailing impoundment in Arizona, USA. To monitor the performance of different ET cover systems in response to precipitation patterns, four different test plots consisting of two different cover depths and two different vegetation densities were instrumented with heat dissipation sensor nests. The sensors measure the soil water pressure potential and allow hydraulic gradients to be determined within and below the cover systems to depths of 180 cm. Three replicate sensor nests were installed in each test plot to account for variability in materials and test plot treatments. Data collection occurs twice daily and is ongoing. Weather during the 26-month monitoring period was characterised by two months of greater than normal precipitation followed by nine months of normal precipitation and 15 months of abnormally dry conditions. Monitoring data indicate that deep percolation occurs in response to periods of extended precipitation, however, drying was observed to depths of six feet below the surface in all test plots. Using conservative assumptions regarding tailing hydraulic properties, one-dimensional downward flux predictions based on the monitoring data indicate very low (Additional long-term monitoring and installation of deeper and replicate monitoring sensors into tailings without cover systems are recommended to evaluate the long-term ET cover system performance and develop a better understanding of deep percolation rates at the sites.
