The Zeehan field has yielded over 190 000 tons of lead and 26,000,000 oz of silver. Moh of the production took place between the initial discovery of silver-lead ore in 1882 and 1920, and the greatest part was extracted from fissure lodes in the Proterozoic to (?) lower Cambrian rocks. It is demonstrated that the prosperity of the mines relied upon the silver content, which is apparently highest in these beds, particularly where spilitic rocks are associated with them. In contrast, galena occurring in orebodies emplaced in the Gordon Limestone is low in silver.Most of the workings are relatively shallow due in some cases to enrichment related to erosion surfaces.Fault zones within a complex anticlinal structure exposing the Proterozoic to (?) lower Cambrian formations appear to have been major factors in the control of mineralization.

The share of electric arc furnace based steel production is increasing - New technologies for the production of virgin raw materials for EAF production are under development and on the market - VAI has a strong position in the field of scrap substitution technologies with their COREX«-, COREX«-DR and FINMET«-technology. In late-1998 the steel plant SALDANHA was started up successfully. This integrated compact mill is using the COREX«-technology as hot metal and a combined DR-plant as DRI production unit. Also in 1999 the BHB FINMET« plant Port Headland went on Stream.

Prominent among the ore minerals at Mt. Ellison, in the Brock's Creek district, Northern Territory, are a number of copper-bismuth sulphides wittichenite, aikinite, emplectite, in association with nativebismuth, chalcopyrite, bornite, chalcocite, sphalerite and linnaeite.Linnaeite and aikinite formed first and were followed by native bismuth. Wittichenite was later and substantially replaces earlier minerals. Replacement of aikinite by wittichenite has produced secondaryor reaction bismuth.INTRODUCTIONThe Brock's Creek district of the Northern Territory lies to the south east of Darwin and has been the locale of intermittent mining of small but rich deposits of diverse ore type. Gold, tin, and copper ores were recovered especially between 1890 and 1910 with minor exploitation up to the present time. Copper ores were of prior importance, the main production coming from supergene enriched deposits of chalcocite.The mines are situated in strongly folded Precambrian strata comprising slates, sandstones, volcanics and amphibolites with replaced haematitic rocks (Sullivan, 1953). The strata in the Brock's Creek area immediately north of the Darwin-Birdum railway line are domed around a roughly circular granitic mass some 5 miles in diameter. The Mount Ellison mine is located near the N.E. margin of the granite in metamorphosed basic country rock.Study of a series of polished sections from Mt. Ellison revealed the presence of linnaeite, chalcopyrite, bornite, aikinite, wittichenite, emplectite, bismuth, sphalerite, and chalcocite. With the exception of sphalerite and emplectite each of these minerals is prominently developed and intimately intergrown with the other constituents.

During the last 125 years, the steel industry has witnessed revolutionary changes in the process of steelmaking. The Bessemer process was the predominant steel production technology during the last two decades of the 19th century. The open hearth process accounted for the lion's share of world steel production for six decades from 1910 to 1970. With the appearance of the LD process on the industrial stage in 1952, the importance of open hearth process declined and currently the basic oxygen processes are contributing more than 60 per cent of the world steel production. The LD process also led to the development of several other oxygen blown processes such as LDAC, OLP, OBM, QBOP, EOF, Clc.

Gas well tests were performed on 17 wells in the Roma area. The procedure used in the test programme incorporates an initial isochronal test followed by what is described as the "two flow drawdown" technique. The second flow of the two flow drawdown test was conducted for sufficient time to allow transient investigation of the surrounding reservoir. This combination of tests allows the evaluation of stabilized production capacity in addition to the determination ,of several important reservoir characteristics.It also provides a qualitative indication of reserves, by reflecting the presence or absence of reservoir boundaries within the drainage area affected during the test.

Department of Pathology, British Post-graduate Medical School, London:The experiments here recorded were devised and carried -out during the last two years in an attempt to corroborate the important work of Denny, Robson and Irwin (1939) in which they found that experimental silicosis could be prevented by means of metallic aluminum. By causing rabbits to inhale powdered quartz for several months they induced experimental silicosis. These animals then served as controls for comparison with another group which were dusted with a mixture of quartz and aluminum. In the second group silicosis failed to develop.Our experimental procedure was somewhat different. We resorted to intratracheal insufflation instead of simple inhalation, and we used rats instead of rabbits: otherwise the essential features of the original experiments were carefully duplicated.EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES.A single dose of dust was delivered into the lungs of each animal. The dust was suspended in a fluid medium and injected by means of a syringe directly into the trachea in known quantity (technique of Kettle and Hilton, 1932). The suspensions were autoclaved before use and were injected with aseptic precautions. Having had a long experience of this technique we employed it with confidence and usually secured a fairly uniform dispersal of dust throughout both lungs. To carry out injections successfully one requires, above all, an even suspension of dust which will flow smoothly and quickly from the syringe. This is not difficult in the case of quartz, for, though it tends to settle out rather quickly, this can be avoided by constantly agitating the suspension. The syringe containing the inoculum may be shaken gently right up to the moment of injection and then emptied quickly to prevent sedimentation. Powdered aluminum is more difficult to handle, for the particles tend to flocculate and are not readily made to disperse evenly in saline, even by violent shaking. For this reason an emulsifying agent may be used to advantage, provided it does not complicate the experiment, a point to be mentioned again presently.THE EXPERIMENTSExperiments with quartz alone: Extensive silicotic lesions were produced in 23 out of 26 rats by the administration of pure quartz dust in doses of from 50 to 200 mg. per rat. The dust was so finely pulverised that the particles averaged about 1-p. in size: none was larger than 5 p. and 99 per cent. were under 2.5 p.Eight of these animals survived for seven months and were then killed...

Over half of the molten aluminium produced at the 52,000 tons/ year eapacity plant operated by Comalco Aluminium (Bell Bay) Limited in Tasmania is cast into saleable produets by the direct chill process. Considering the importance of direct chill casting to the aluminium industry it is surprising that so little published literature on the subject is available, although Easton (1947), Smart (1954), and Uppert (1940, 1944, 1945) have contributed much toward lifting the veil of secrecy surrounding the process.The direct chill, or D.C. process as it is commonly called when related to aluminium, consists basically of feeding molten aluminium or its alloys into; water-cooled mould from the bottom of which solid aluminium is continuously extracted. Although the casting procedure is continuous in principle, the equipment is normally operated in an intermittent manner. Castings up to 20 ft long are formed during a cycle. At the end of the cycle casting is stopped and the pit into which thc castings are dropped is cleared before a new cycle commences. Depending on the size of the casting in relation to the cross sectional area of the pit and the support mechanism (commonly a hydraulic ram), 'drops' of up to 15 tons are not uncommon. This method of D.C. casting IS termed vertical D.C. casting and is the one most commonly employed in the aluminium industry.Horizontal casting has come more to the fore in recent years with the casting being extracted from the mould in the horizontal plane and is a truly continuous casting method since flying saws can be simply used to cut the continuously cast shape into required lengths as it emerges from the mould...

Uranium exploration over a wide area of the Southern Frame Embayment, South Australia, has defined a number of Lower Tertiary fluvial palaeochannels incised in older rocks. The buried channels contain similar stratigraphicsequences of interbedded sand, silt, and clay, probably derived from the adjacent uranium-rich Olarv Provinee. Uranium mineralization is pervasive within two major palaeochannels, and four small uranium deposits have been found in the basal sands of these channel sequences, at the margins of extensive tongues of limonitic sand.One of the channels is examined in detail with respect to channel morphology, stratigraphy, and rock alteration and the geology and ore controls of the contained uranium deposits are described.A geochemical zonation reflected by variation in limonite, pyrite, carbon, and humic malleI' is defined across one of the deposits. A genetic model is proposed suggesting formation by a uraniferous geochemical cell which migrated down the stream gradient and concentrated uranium on its lateral margins adjacent to the channel bank.

The concept of a magnetic hydro-cyclone is undeveloped, possibly because studies by Bragard (1965) and the Royal School of Mines in London (Robinson, 1965) were not encouraging. Its role for the concentration of ironsands is attractive in that the classifying effect within a hydrocyclone may be comparable to the classifying effect in the gravity concentration of ironsands, and thus two steps may be achieved in one. Furthermore it should be a very simple and cheap process. The idea has been explored intermittently since 1976 but more energetically since the offering of a magnetic hydro-cyclone thickener by Boxmag Rapid (1983). This study provides quantitative data on vein distributions within seven selected epithermal systems, four deposits hosted predominantly in rhyolitic rocks: Ohui, Wharekirauponga, Neavesville and Komata, and three major deposits mainly hosted in andesite: Martha Hill, Golden Cross and Karangahake. The technique of fractal analysis was used to help quantify vein distribution patterns. The fractal dimensions (D) obtained are related to the number of veins per metre, the degree of vein clustering, and vein thickness. An increase in any of these tends to increase the fractal dimension.   It is the relative relationship of these parameters that is important for the characterisation of vein distributions, and the comparison of different deposits. Within the same systems, the rhyolites are characterised by lower vein thickness and vein density, but have a higher degree of vein clustering compared to the andesites. Sections that are deeper and more centrally located within the epithermal system and/or close to major structures tend to have a greater degree of vein clustering, higher average vein thickness and density, and higher thickness to density ratios. This depth control is most pronounced in epithermal gold-silver systems because they have formed at shallow crustal levels where physico-chemical conditions change drastically both vertically and laterally. In addition to lithological and structural control at vein scale, deposit scale structure is of great importance in the deposition of economic mineralisation. Large open vein structures capable of sustaining high fluxes of hydrothermal fluid, favourable for the formation of large, high-grade gold deposits, are best developed in andesite sequences.

AngloGold Ashanti Ltd nominated Sunrise Dam Gold Mine as a case study via their involvement with the long-running Australian Mineral Industry Research Association (AMIRA) International P9P research program (AMIRA, 2015) . A group of researchers from the Global Comminution Collaborative (GCC) conducted a comminution circuit survey and review together with a large group of graduate metallurgists, senior metallurgists and operators. Fundamental and applied research understanding was used to identify productivity and efficiency improvements around the crushing and grinding circuits. The limitations of current scientific knowledge were identified through this process and this will allow future research to be more focussed on what is required by industry.The comminution circuit at Sunrise Dam comprises three stages of crushing followed by two stages of ball milling. The secondary crusher and primary ball mill classification were identified as the primary limitations of the circuit. The secondary crusher was found to be underperforming through overall equipment efficiency (OEE) analysis and an improved chamber design was identified by Chalmers University. This improved design will promote higher power utilisation, choke feeding and a finer crushed product for the milling circuit. The primary ball mill product is classified by a combination of a trommel, 3 sieve bends and a hydrocyclone. The combination of poor classification and coarse, competent feed led to a situation where the primary mill was overfilled with rocks, reducing grinding rate due to cushioning of impact. Size specific energy (SSE) benchmarking methodology was used to identify that a 10% increase in throughput could be achieved with improved primary classification.CITATION:Ballantyne, G R, Clarke, N, Elms, P, Anyimadu, A and Powell, M S, 2015. I would take this, opportunity of thanking you for the high honour you have conferred on me in electing me to the responsible position of President. You may rest assured I will use my best endeavours to promote the interests of the Institute in every way that lies in my power. In reviewing the work of the past year, it is a matter for congratulation to find the Institute in a position at once so healthy and robust, and that notwithstanding the acute depression which has prevailed in the mining industry.Owing to deaths or departures from the colony, the names of six members have disappeared from the roll of membership, but you will be pleaed to learn that several new members have been elected, the register now, showing 56 Members, 25Associates and 2 Students. A complete record of the papers read and the discussions that took place will be found embodied in the splendid volume of Transactions which has just been issued, and which I am sure will be welcomed by mining engineers in all parts of the world.

Increasing demands on quality of metallurgical grade alumina and for lower production costs led to the development of a new fluid bed calcining process. The process, jointly developed in Germany by Vereinigte Aluminium Werke A. G. and Lurgi Gesellschaften m.b.H., takes advantage of modern chemical engineering methods such as counter-current flow of combustion air and solids, direct heat-exchange between combustion air and fine solids, and near stoichiometric combustion of oil in a fluid bed. Using a two-stage Venturi-type suspension preheater for heat-recovery from combustion flue-gases, the circulating fluid bed technique with internal oil combustion at 220°F for the calcining step and a five-stage fluidized bed cooler for heat-recovery from calcines, the process gives an outstanding heat-efficiency. In a first industrial plant for 560 sh. tons/day of alumina heat consumption figures of less than 1·400 B.T.U./lb Al203 g were achieved.

Yallourn brown coal and its characteristics have been the subject of innumerable papers and discussions. The Lurgi process adopted for the production of Towns gas by the gasification of brown coal has been described frequently in literature.The application of the Lurgi process for the gasification of Yallourn briquettes has naturally lead to some unexpected problems. Rather than attempt to review the whole field of experience gained in the first two years of operation of the gasification plant at Morwell, this paper attempts to describe two problems encountered, peculiar to the fuel used, and the steps taken in overcoming them.THE PROCESS AND PLANTTo clarify the conditions surrounding the problems, it is necessary to briefly describe the gasification and cooling processes and plant.Brown coal briquettes are gasified in a pressure generator, using a mixture of steam and oxygen as a gasifying medium. Crude gas produced in the generator is washed and cooled in the waste heat boiler and coolers. Figure 1 shows an arrangement of the generator and coolers. The gasifying medium enters the generator through a hollow shaft in the base. In the course of the last twenty eight years the copper lodes of New Caledonia have been periodically worked or abandoned, until quite recently, probably attracted by the higher price of the metal, British capital has again been induced to embark upon the further development of several copper properties, which at present give reasonable promise of becoming regular producers. Owing to its proximity to Australia (only a three day's journey by mail steamer from Sydney) New Caledonia becomes of additional interest to Australian commerce in general, and it is to be hoped that the French Government may see their way before long to make the best of this natural position, to the mutual benefit of both countries concerned.Op till now all copper ores and concentrates which have been shipped from New Caledonia, were treated in Australian smelting works furthermore, Australian mine managers and miners have from time to time been connected with New Caledonian mining ventures, but, unfortunately, it must be said that nearly everyone of them returned to Australia thoroughly disgusted with his experience over there. Even to the casual observer, it is not so very difficult to find a proper explanation for these shortcomings in the peculiar economic conditions of the 'French colony, as many of the objections which have hitherto existed in connection with mining operations, were the direct consequences of a system of colonisation which could not possibly have been productive of better results.

Grinding of iron ore is an essential step to utilise ore fines for pelletisation needed for DRI units. While preparing iron ore pellets for DRI production, the iron ore needs extensive grinding which is highly energy consuming step causing the process to become non-viable in some cases. In the present paper an attempt has been made to evaluate grinding performance of thermally treated ore compared to normal ore grinding. Such thermal pre-treatment has been found to reduce the energy requirement with lower consumption rate of grinding media. It has been observed that by applying thermal shock the ore is rendered weak with improved grindability. The stresses generated due to thermal treatment may extend existing micro-cracks in the ore and in some cases it may even nucleate fresh cracks. Experimental studies carried out on thermally treated hematitite ore reveals that the heating to 400¦C followed by water quenching can cause a reduction of 45 per cent in grinding energy. THE following notes were accumulated during the years 1905 to 1911, when the writer was employed at Stannary Hills. The writer's duty took him over the underground workings daily. In odd moments the geology of the surrounding country was worked out. As the time for this purpose was limited, many interesting points had to be left, untouched. The faulting system in the mines was of such a puzzling character that it seemed as if the geology of the surrounding district might throw some light on it. Dr Jack, in 1907, reported on these mines for the shareholders, but came to no definite conclusions. Unfortunately, the writer has not had access to this report for many years. At the time of his visit the larger develbpments in the Ivanhoe and, Kitchenen orebodies (see Fig 1, B2) were only being opened up. Mr. H. Herman mentions Stannary Hills on p 320, Proceedings Aust Inst ME, new series, No 14, and on p 326 expresses the opinion that the pipe or joint-veins (as at Irvine bank and Stannary Hills) were more valuable to follow than lodes in the granite in that district.GEOLOGY OF DISTRICTThe main feature of the area mapped is a band of altered sedimentary rocks which carry no fossils. It is a mile wide, and consists of a hard band of greywackes 200 ·t ·300 yds. wide, flanked on both sides by contorted shales which become more micaceous as the granite-area to the east is approached. The strata have a general strike of N. 30° W., with a steep westerly dip. A large area of acid intrusive rocks occurs to the west of this band.
