This paper presents a metaheuristic solution to the optimisation of open pit long-term production scheduling with a stockpile and geological uncertainty. The optimisation formulation is a two-stage stochastic integer programming (SIP) model that determines the optimal mining sequence that maximises the total discounted cash flow, while penalising for high deviations from production targets. A parallel implementation of Tabu Search is proposed to accelerate the solution of the SIP formulation and take full advantage of multicore computer processing. Different variants of the proposed algorithm are applied to a case study to assess the performance of the parallel approach. The proposed algorithm and variants are benchmarked using linear relaxation of the complete problem to determine robustness and provide a better overview of the related performance. The results show a net improvement over the sequential solution, and the new proposal seems to be promising when working with a large-scale data set.CITATION:Senécal, R and Dimitrakopoulos, R, 2014. DCF Valuations are very important to individuals and companies involved in the mining industry. Such valuations are critical to investment decisions in relation to new and existing projects. In particular they provide fundamental information to shareholders in the event of a capital raising or takeover and to financiers supporting mining companies and projects. Also, DCF Valuations are often used to support asset carrying values in the financial statements of mining companies. This paper presents a Chartered Accountant's (CA's) perspective on the main issues to be considered in preparing, analysing and relying upon DCF methods in mineral valuations and provides some practical examples relating to key issues. The paper makes the important point that DCF methods involve making assumptions about future events and circumstances that inherently contain uncertainty which results in a valuation prepared on a DCF basis providing a range of values that are not perfect or accurate. In order that DCF valuations provide meaningful information the underlying methodology used and assumptions made must be consistent, sound and well supported. Credibility of those involved in preparing mineral valuations is vital and this paper supports the adoption of sound practices by all concerned.

Froth flotation is one of the most widely used beneficiation processes for fine and ultrafine coals and minerals. Maintaining optimal metallurgical performance in industrial flotation operation is still a challenging task owing to the lack of an effective tool to diagnose the flotation performance in realtime. For this purpose, a number of flotation performance monitoring systems with different working principles have been developed to provide instant feedback for process control and optimisation. In this paper, for the first time, five different flotation performance monitoring systems were systematically compared through an on-site trial in a coking coal flotation plant in Queensland, Australia. The monitoring systems were used to measure (i) gas holdup, (ii) overflowing froth velocity, (iii) overflowing froth height, (iv) air recovery and (v) drag force exerted by overflowing froth, in an industrial flotation column and the outputs of these systems were collected simultaneously at a wide range of operating conditions. For each monitoring system, the best regression model describing the correlation between the system output and the flotation performance was selected from various regression models (eg linear, quadratic, power-law and logarithmic) using the Akaike information criterion (AIC). A comparison of the coefficient of determination (R2 ), residual sum of squares (RSS) and measuring accuracy at 95 per cent confidence level of the best regression models of these monitoring systems suggested that the drag sensor outperformed the other systems at a wide range of flotation operating conditions. The superior performance of the drag sensor was attributed to its distinctive design that enabled intimate sensing of variation of the overflowing froth properties. Furthermore, the drag sensor had the ability to monitor feed ash content variation when the other operation variables were set almost constant.

BHP BillitonÆs new rotary iron ore car dumper installation at Finucane Island (Port Hedland) was constructed to increase the total capacity of the port facility from 110 Mtpa to 120 Mtpa and to allow for incremental capacity increases in future. The arrangement of the dumper is similar to other car dumper installations existing on site. To construct the facility, approximately 120 000 m3 of material was excavated in six months, to a total depth of 22 m. The saline water table was nominally 6 m below ground level and the materials excavated varied depending on depth, ranging from sand to mangrove muds. There was a need to retain the sides of the excavation and limit the amount of water from entering the excavated area. This was required to allow excavation to progress and had to be maintained during construction of the permanent concrete and steel facility. The excavation was backfilled progressively as construction progressed. Various retaining wall methods were investigated with the preferred option being sheet piles secured by walers and ground anchors. Detailed electronic models were developed and assessed to complete the final design arrangement. Dewatering bores around the perimeter of the excavation removed the groundwater to intercepted sumps within the site. A strict and methodical program was developed to monitor the integrity of the temporary works and the quality of the groundwater. The works were completed on time despite the following challenges being encountered: availability of resources and equipment, movement of mobile plant on æboggyÆ materials, difficulty driving sheet piles into material at depth, drilling of ground anchors to 32 m, grouting of ground anchors, greater than expected groundwater flows, and the risk of hydrocarbons within the groundwater. The lessons learned from the use of the retention system and, in particular, the associated construction challenges overcome, provide a sound basis for similar work in this buoyant resource market. The conference paper describes the temporary works options investigated, design considerations and processes, construction methodology and challenges encountered, and the monitoring systems developed. Lessons learned are also discussed.

The first target of mining activities on the surface of the moon is to find and extract water from the icy regolith on the moon. A test drilling unit was designed and fabricated under a NASA Early Stage Innovation (ESI) grant. A high-frequency data acquisition system was used to record drilling responses at 1000 Hz. Parameters like weight on bit (WOB), torque, rev/min, rate of penetration (ROP), mechanical specific energy (MSE), field penetration index (FPI), and the uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) were recorded for 40 boreholes in the analog samples made of regolith simulant and specialised cement. Development of the AI system and machine learning (ML) algorithms for analysis of data to evaluate strength and hence water content of icy regolith required a large data set. In this case, the data set comprising of more than one billion data points recorded while drilling into various analogue samples and cryogenic lunar formations to optimise power consumption and make bit wear adjustment during drilling operations. The tests were also repeated in the samples of icy regolith at various water content at -190C to verify the ability of the algorithms to analyse the data and to estimate the strength of the frozen formation and hence water content. The paper will discuss the objectives and methodologies used in the project and reviews the testing program and the machine learning (ML) algorithms ability to identify various formations along the exploration boreholes.

Accurate geometric models of orebodies establish the framework for reliable mineral resource estimates that provide a basis for further exploration and mine planning, as well as for financial models that ultimately determine the economic viability of a deposit. Traditional, explicit geometric modelling techniques that are utilised for resource modelling by the general mining software packages, such as MineSight«, involve manually digitising interpreted ore outlines that must be carefully linked to create valid geometric solid models. An alternative, implicit modelling method, employed by LeapfrogTM software relies on a fast method of global interpolation, which offers several advantages over traditional modelling techniques. Although previous case studies have documented the relative efficiencies of the two approaches, the accuracy of the two methods has not been previously quantified and compared. This study quantifies the accuracy of solid models created using explicit and implicit methods, and compares the differences between the models. Solid models of the Doris Hinge vein gold deposit (located in the Hope Bay district, Nunavut, Canada) are constructed from preliminary and follow-up drilling data using both modelling techniques. The accuracies of the solid models generated using preliminary drilling data are determined by measuring the 3D distance between the surface of the models and the actual contact location defined by the follow-up drilling data. Additional comparisons based on volume, cross-sectional area and surface differences were made between both phase 1 solid models and solid models constructed from phase 2 drilling information. The overall results of this study find that the MineSight« and LeapfrogTM solid model accuracies are virtually the same, and that their volume, cross-sectional area, and surface differences are comparable. This study concludes that the implicit modelling technique generates accurate solid models that can be used in place of explicit models as ore shells for resource estimation in certain circumstances.

The Geita gold mines in north-western Tanzania have produced 5 Moz of gold from an estimated endowment of 15 Moz. They are generally classified as typical Archaean orogenic banded iron formations (BIF)-hosted gold deposits in banded iron formations as described by Goldfarb, Groves and Gardoll (2001); Neall and Phillips (1987); Phillips and Powell (1993) and Neall (1987). The controls on gold mineralisation have been reassessed to conclude that Nyankanga, and we conclude that Nyankanga, the largest deposits within the group, developed during a dynamic and protracted deformation history intimately associated with several stages of hydrothermal fluid flow and alteration. The fluid-induced fractures associated with gold mineralisation are primarily manifested as submillimetre to metre-scale fractures and breccias developed preferentially in rocks that have been previously deformed and altered by silicification or seafloor metasomatism. This realisation detracts from the exploration and mining strategies that would solely concentrate on fluid pathways and associated wallrock alteration and veining solely within the BIFs as hosts for economic gold mineralisation.

Responsibility for the administration of mineral resources is divided between federal and provincial governments. The paper traces the evolution of mineral policies at both levels of government, from the end of World War II to the present. In the immediate post-World War II years, the emphasis was on supplying the raw material needs of a rapidly growing world economy. Policies favouring growth and development of the Canadian mining industry were instituted during this period. Two decades of uninterrupted expansion (the 1950s and 1960s) ensued. The decade of the 1970s was a turbulent one for Canadian mineral producers. Governments intervened more substantially than ever before. Moreover, the industry suffered from an intense period of competition for resource revenues by the two levels of government. At the same time, far reaching changes were taking place in the structure of world mineral markets. To date in the 1980s, the mineral industry has, perforce, adapted to existing mineral market structures. Mineral policies, too, have shown signs of adapting to the needs of the mineral industry. Whether the resulting mix of policies will permit the revitalization of the Canadian mining sector remains to be seen.

The competition between various options for the use of land is ever increasing. Commonly in Australia large tracts of land were un-encumbered by sweeping land use option limitations, but this situation has been rapidly altering in recent decades as governments are obliged to maximise the utility of the land for a broad range of competing interests. While the interests of miners have always been considered, the effects on limiting access to land for exploration and possible mining have not always been effectively incorporated into decision-making processes. As a result the challenge for national and state organisations representing these interests has been to develop a transparent process to allow for the mineral potential of an area to be systematically assessed and for information to be presented for use by specialists and non-specialists. Government agencies are called upon to implement government policy but also to provide accurate and meaningful advice which can assist in policy and land use decisions. Commonly timeframes are short and information can be less than complete. Nevertheless on-going decisions are made based upon the best available understanding. It is in this operational framework that the methods described in this paper are set. The paper describes a process for quickly and systematically providing advice on mineral potential for use by government agencies and ultimately the community within tight time and resource constraints. It is a method of combining the accumulated knowledge about mineral resources and their potential and presenting this information in an easily accessible form which can be used in a negotiation and policy development environment. Development of the method was undertaken to meet the needs of the Regional Forestry Agreement process in Australia. The method has been applied to study areas in New South Wales, Tasmania, Western Australia and elsewhere. Examples in this paper are taken from north eastern New South Wales.

Production scheduling optimisation in open pit gold mining is a complex problem as it is driven by economic criteria reflecting particular economic interests of the concerned parties in the mining business. The contemporary organisational forms of mining, such as owner-operator and contract mining, are a good example of this relationship. These forms are complex and contradictory by nature as the contractor aims to get more waste at the beginning of mine exploitation in order to make more profit with favourable discounting effect over time, while the owner-operator aims to mine less waste at the beginning, which is a precondition for implementation of the mine planning principle of waste deferment and maximising the net present value (NPV) by accounting for the time value of money. Both forms are vital for the successful performance of the Australian mining industry as their competition is a powerful driving force of the market-oriented national economy.The present paper offers a new vision about the economic effectiveness of contract and owner-operator forms in surface gold mining through the prism of a novel production scheduling approach with a multistage stabilisation of the mining rate that implements the mine-to-market concept of modelling. The comparison of the forms is demonstrated with a case study that reveals the specific features of the new scheduling approach and the benefits of its implementation in the exploitation of Australian gold resources.CITATION:Halatchev, R, 2013. I congratulate The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy on its decision to hold its Annual Conference here in Western Australia. Western Australia, with its abundant mineral and energy resources, plays a key role in the Australian mining industry... and Western Australia will continue to figure prominently in this vital industry for many years to come. The success of our gold, iron ore, bauxite, mineral sands and other primary industries has enabled Western Australia to contribute significantly to Australia's export revenue and, therefore, to the nation's economic strength. The State's mineral wealth has also provided the impetus for a recent surge in mining related activity, including a dramatic increase in downstream processing of our raw materials. Billions of dollars worth of new project investment is either committed or awaiting final approval - and most of this new investment is a direct result of a healthy and vibrant mining industry. The North West Shelf Project - which has been providing natural gas for homes and industry in Western Australia since 1984 - has also played a key role in stimulating industrial development. The availability of abundant, competitively-priced gas from the North West Shelf has - along with the availability of other raw materials - made Western Australia a more attractive proposition for industrial investment. The company I represent, Woodside Offshore Petroleum, is operator of the North West Shelf Project on behalf of the Project's six Joint Venture Participants - Woodside Petroleum Ltd, BHP Petroleum (North West Shelf) Pty Ltd, BP Developments Australia Ltd, Chevron Asiatic Limited, Japan Australia LNG (MIMI) Pty Ltd and Shell Development (Australia) Proprietary Limited. The theme for this Annual Conference: "Excellence - the key to the continued success of the Australasian mining industry" is appropriate to the North West Shelf Project. The pursuit of excellence has been a hallmark of the Project. The Joint Venture Participants have been conscious of the need for stringent quality control at all stages of development. Procurement and purchasing policies, for instance, have demanded strict adherence by contractors and suppliers to the highest standards and specifications.

In the present study infrared attenuated total reflection (IR-ATR) was used to monitor the rate of in situ adsorption of heptyl xanthate on a layer of zinc sulfide synthesised on a germanium ATR crystal. The zinc sulfide surface was characterised using x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The absorbance of heptyl xanthate measured increased with increasing bulk concentration of the adsorbate up to an equilibrium plateau value corresponding to a fractional coverage of the surface sites of the substrate. For the adsorption from solutions of concentrations between 10-3 and 10-5 M, the rate of adsorption increased with increasing bulk concentration. At higher concentrations the measured absorbance should be corrected for the absorbance due to the concentration of xanthate in bulk solution. The present work provides a discussion of this correction. Assuming the adsorption stage to be rate-controlling and proportional both to the concentration of the adsorbing species in solution and unreacted surface area, a rate law governing this type of transient adsorption kinetics was derived. By means of absorbance data for the concentrations 0.1 and 0.01 mM, the rate constant of adsorption was calculated. From the initial part of a Langmuir adsorption isotherm, the absorbance at monolayer coverage and the equilibrium constant of adsorption could be estimated.

Cerro Vanguardia SA (CVSA), property of AngloGold Ashanti, mines gold and silver from a system of vetiforme orebodies located in the south of the Argentine Patagonia, in the Province of Santa Cruz.Surface mining techniques are applied to develop a series of narrow pits with an average waste to ore ratio of 26:1. This quite unique constraint brings into focus the need to maximise inter-ramp and final wall angles, leading to a strong need to optimise wall control drilling and blasting in order to reduce back-break damage to an absolute minimum.The paper describes a program of applied investigation and design modification implemented during?2008?and?2009 in?two?separate pits of Cerro Vanguardia. Three distinct yet complementary damage mechanisms were identified and observed during the field components of the work; vibration induced strain fracturing, surface cratering around blasthole collars and quasi-static loading and unloading of the surrounding rock mass as a consequence of poorly controlled confinement.With these mechanisms identified, a measurement, modelling and modification campaign was conducted in order to reduce the incidence of each source of damage. Interactive design analysis and modelling, near-field vibration measurement, video capture and the application of electronic initiation technology were supported by seed wave modelling and topographic evaluation of the achieved results.Results point to the usefulness of simulation techniques for determining optimum delay timing to reduce vibration impact, while the visualisation of explosive energy distribution produced by drilling and explosive loading decisions assists in reducing the probability of over-confinement.This paper presents relevant aspects of the two fieldwork campaigns:1) describing the application of the techniques, and2) summarising the results obtained.

Indian blast furnaces operate with coke gener- ally containing 24 to 28% ash compared to 10-15% ash in coke in most other parts of the world. The operating problems are further aggravated by the high alumina content and the adverse alumina to silica ratio in the ore. The above factors not only increase the coke rate but, at the same time, increase the flush slag volume, make the bosh slag highly limey and thereby viscous, and produce a flush slag containing 24 to 26% alumina. Relative- ly low flame temperatures (RAFT) make conditions more difficult. The high basicity of the bosh slag limits the maximum flush slag basicity to around 1.0, beyond which the burden movement is adversely affected by the viscosity of the bosh slag: This effect is partly controlled by operating blast furnaces with high MgO in the flush slag (around.10%), which also improves the desulphurizing power of slag. Steps are underway in some plants to inject lime through theòtuyeres to control the bosh slag basicity and also to neutralise the large quantity of silica which is released at the tuyere level from the coke ash, so that the silicon content of the hot metal can also be controlled. High bosh slag basicity coupled with the characteristics of iron ore/aggolmerates, widens the softening-melting zone and alters the shape of the softening-melting zone. This leads to operat- ing difficulties and poor hot metal quality. This paper discusses the above aspects of Indian blast furnace operation and steps being taken to surmount some of the above difficulties.

Microseismic monitoring is regularly used in the mining and geotechnical industries to provide detailed information about rock mass response to operational activities. This paper implements a variable 3D velocity model (VM) at a North American hard rock mine with the aim of further improving the accuracy of seismic event locations. A collapsing method is also used to help analyse two individual seismic event clusters at another North American hard rock mine. In the first case study, the location accuracy of events is shown to improve by moving from a conventional single VM to a variable 3D VM that accounts for voids and different geological domains. The modal average for the event location accuracy improved from 14 m to 5 m when the 3D VM was used. Additionally, the single VM failed to locate 26 per cent of the seismic events that were located by the 3D VM. In the second case study, the distribution of seismic events was further enhanced by using a collapsing method that highlighted planar structures. The collapsing method was performed on two large event sequences that occurred in close proximity and identified different seismic event distributions. One aftershock sequence aligned along a plane, suggesting an activated structure, while the other large event sequence had a more 3D distribution of events, suggesting a complex stress redistribution on smaller structures.CITATION:Pinnock, I, Collins, D S, Toya, Y and Hosseini, Z, 2016. The Bottle Creek mine, when opened next month, will consist of three open cuts, Emu, VB and Boags, feeding ore to a central mill. The open cuts cover a strike length of 4.5 kilometres which forms part of a linear structure, which can be traced geochemically for 26.0 kilometres. With the exception of a few small gossanous outcrops at Emu, the deposits are completely covered with insitu laterite and alluvial overburden. Since its discovery in 1984, the deposit has been subjected to three major reverse circulation (RC) drilling programmes which have successively closed up the drill spacing on the main mineralized zone to 25m horizontally and less than 25m vertically. All resource calculations have been based primarily on samples of RC drill cuttings from these programmes. Ore reserve calculations have been completed after each drilling phase. They began with a simple polygonal technique, progressed through two sectional half-distance calculations and are now being completed with a 3-D geostatistical technique. Because of the style of mineralization, Norgold personnel paid particular attention to assessing the variability of the mineralization by using repeat samples, repeat analysis and diamond drill vs RC comparisons. In addition, close attention has been paid to obtaining an accurate estimate of the global SG of the ore bodies. Particular care has been taken to obtain complete drill intersections of the orebody and to maximize wet sample recoveries. Extensive re-sampling and re-analysis of samples has confirmed that Bottle Creek is unusual for an oxidized gold deposit in that all the gold appears to be very fine grained, and evenly distributed within the mineralized zone.

The City of Kalgoorlie/Boulder is situated approximately 600 kilometres to the east of Perth (Fig. 1), and is the major regional centre of the Eastern Goldfields, supporting a population of approximately 25,000. The formation of Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines in 1989 brought the existing operat- ing entities adjacent to the city under common ownership and management. The Joint Venturers forming the management company are Homestake Gold of Australia and Gold Mines of Kalgoorlie (a Normandy/Poseidon com- pany). This traditional underground mining centre has been worked since 1893, yielding 40.8 million ounces of gold from ore with an average head grade of 10 grams per tonne. Historically the heart of the operation has been the famous Golden Mile located on the Eastern perimeter of the city, in the area known as Fimiston. The other significant operations that form KCGM are the Mt Percy Open Pit and the Mt Charlotte Underground Operation. KCGM's current production is 520,000 ounces per year, with the com- bined Fimiston operations (open cut and underground) contributing 400,000 ounces. The current expansion will increase production levels by a further 150,000 ounces. Traditionally 98 per cent of gold has been sourced from underground areas, however the recent upsurge of open cut operations is rapidly overturning this historical relationship.

New developments are taking place in the recovery of gold from leached pulps that are based upon the adsorption of the metal cyanide species onto ion exchange resins. Despite the success of several resin-in-pulp pilot plant operations in the Western World and large-scale plants in the former Soviet Union, the process is yet to gain recognition as a viable alternative to the carbon-in-pulp process. An experimental research program has investigated the use of a variety of different types of resins for the recovery of gold, but to-date no resin studied has the desired properties of high selective loading capacity for gold cyanide and a simple inexpensive elution procedure. In addition very little is known concerning the physical strength of resins and their ability to resist shattering due to osmotic shock during cycles of adsorption and elution. The ability of ion exchange resins to enhance the leaching of refractory and re-adsorbing ores has not been investigated. This paper highlights the necessary factors that need to be addressed before commercialisation of ion exchange technology for gold extraction is feasible.

In steelmaking processes, it is known that P2O5 in dephosphorisation slags often exists in solid solutions between Ca2SiO4 and Ca3P2O8, <C2S-C3P>SS, and thus the solid solutions play an important role in the dephosphorisation reaction. Hence, the knowledge of thermochemical properties, ie phase relations and activities of components, in slags containing <C2S-C3P>SS are necessary for the effective removal of phosphorus from hot metal. In this study, the P2O5 activities in <C2S-C3P>SS were measured through the gas equilibrium method. In the present experiment, oxide samples were equilibrated with Cu-P liquid alloys at 1573 K under a stream of Ar + H2 + H2O or Ar + H2 + CO2 gas mixture in which oxygen potential was fixed and then equilibrium phosphorus concentrations in the Cu-P alloys, [mass%P]Cu, were analysed with ICP-OES.

The Avebury nickel mine in Western Tasmania is a disseminated nickel sulfide deposit hosted in intensely metasomatised Cambrian ultramafic resulting from later Devonian granite related hydrothermal activity.Variable metasomatism of the ultramafic has formed two distinct gangue mineral assemblages. Less metasomatised ultramafic is comprised of fine grained black antigorite with minor disseminated chromite, magnetite and pentlandite. Intensely metasomatised ultramafic is altered to a pale grey or green, coarsely crystalline tremolite/actinolite and diopside assemblage with minor magnetite, chromite and sulfides. Both gangue mineral assemblages are frequently intermixed in ore grade mineralisation.The bimodal gangue of either serpentinite or metasomatised ultramafic presents challenges to drilling, mining, resource estimation and mineral processing as they possess very different physical properties. Mineralised serpentinite has a mean bulk density of 2.8 g/cc and the ultramafic skarn a mean bulk density of 3.2 g/cc. Physically, the ultramafic skarn is hard to break percussively creating difficulties in the crushing circuit and reducing mine development rates. However, it is non-abrasive and grinds readily, resulting in increased diamond drilling rates and increased mill throughput. Conversely the serpentinite gangue is softer and breaks easily resulting in accelerated development rates and crushing circuit throughput.
