Amongst the unavoidable studies of the mining engineer who desires to reach the maximum efficiency, is the subject of patents. With the fundamental principles of the patent laws of this and other leading countries he should of course befamiliar, but still more should he keep abreast of that practical knowledge which will enable him to act or advise wisely when the patenting of a new invention, or the sale, purchasing, or adoption of a new patented machine or process becomes amatter for consideration. As every engineer worthy of the name is an inventor and more particularly every mining engineer he has a direct interest in watching the progress of legislation and administration concerning patent monopolies.His worldly prospects may indeed, to a considerable extent, depend upon the defeat of bad patent laws and the removal of incompetent officials, or the appointment of better ones. Better patent administration is always in Australia a valid requirement, and until engineers generally take up and press the demand, bad administration is likely to continue. Even though every engineer is not a patentee, nevertheless his interests in patents must always be direct and powerful, and ignorance or apathy in regard thereto must inevitably injure either his own interests or those of his employer. The classification of Mineral Resource estimates for reporting in accordance with the JORC Code is a statement of the Competent PersonÆs confidence in the estimate and an attempt to convey that confidence to the various users of the resource estimate. In general the classification process is either largely subjective, relying on the Competent PersonÆs experience, or relies on statistical measures derived from the estimation process. These statistical measures may not necessarily relate to the overall confidence in the resource which must also take account of the confidence in the geological inputs to the estimation. Several authors, including Jackson et al (2003) and Dominy, Noppe and Annels (2004), have addressed methods of including consideration of geological data and its reliability into the classification process. Henry and Parker (2005) have discussed a quantitative measure for classification of Measured and Indicated Resources related to mine production parcels. These methods rely on the availability of sufficient information for the application of geostatistics, data evaluation techniques or repeated interpretation of data to provide an indication of confidence. They are suitable for very advanced projects. In 2005, using a modification of the financial audit æcontrol and quality criteriaÆ principles, then widely accepted within Newcrest Mining Limited (Newcrest), the principal author developed a scheme which categorised the classified resources into æcontrolÆ and æqualityÆ (or risk) categories. Control covers all aspects of the data collection, the geological interpretation, the data analysis and the modelling of tonnage and grade; it is also influenced by the documentation of the estimate. The quality criteria are a subjective measure of risk associated with the estimation of the resource and refer to the risk that the tonnage and grade are not realised and the consequences if decisions are made on the basis of these estimates. By evaluating the generally accepted level of risk attributed to these quality ratings by Competent Persons within Newcrest, a graphical representation of the confidence in the resource ounces was prepared for communication of the expected confidence in the resource statement.

THE following notes, compiled in the first instance for the makers of rock-drIlls, were read by Mr. Hanton at a meeting of the Broken Hill Branch on 12th Septelnber, 1922. It was decided that all Broken Hill mines be asked to give their individual views on the subject, so that a comprehensive Broken Hill view could be published. Replies have been received from four (4), mines to date, and their'ideas fairly well coincide with those set out by Mr. Hapton. His notes were as follow:- "The Zinc Corporation Limited.NOTES ON ROCK-DRILL DEVELOPMENTSAs far as our present experience goes, the rock-drill developments on this mine will probably be something resembling the following. The programme is subject to modification or alteratian, according to circumstances. The results of further trials and improvements in present drills, and the design of new types, will, of course, affect any general scheme such as that outlined. It appears reasonably certain that the 3i-in. reciprocating drills which have done practically all the stoping up to date, will be gradually replaced by hammer drills of the internal water-feed type, and that the existing types of hammer drill on the mine will be converted into internal water-feed machines instead of being used as dry machine with outside jet.The ultimate types of machines will be four... Type 1 would be a machine equivalent to the Ingersoll Leyner: 248, Waugh Turbro, SullivaIi DX61, or Holman CH2. This would be used for driving, cross-cutting, and similar excavating work, and possiblyfor stoping also, and should be capable of efficiently working any class of ground. Features, apart from the general requirements set out later, would be the weight of the machine and mounting height of the machine above the seating (as this affects the convenience of boring back or bottom holes); absence of projections on the mounting which the air hose will foul as the machine is fed...

After a five year period representing the strongest resource and commodity rally ever experienced, we are now faced with a subdued recovery following the global financial crisis. This renewed economic growth will be steady but eventually attain levels that reignite export demand out of China and other emerging nations, which are now reliant on increasing domestic demand to support their economies. This backdrop of weaker share prices and less available investment capital creates a greater imperative for company management to ensure that its share price is fully valued. The mining geologist plays an important role in achieving this outcome through direct estimation of asset value (resources) but also in strongly communicating the æupsideÆ value opportunity in both mine site and adjacent brownfields exploration and an efficient and technically sound mining operation. The contribution of mining geologists to assist in conducting analyst site visits should not be underestimated, particularly with reduced analyst coverage of the resources sector and some simplification in company analysis through ranking companies on Reserve and Resource positions.

At the inception of the gold-mining industry at Kalgoorlie the small supply of firewood required for steaming purposes was naturally all drawn from the limited local areas, which promised soon to become denuded. With the advent of the railway toKalgoorlie came the ever increasing machinery and steam power, and the accompanying demand for firewood so increased that the fuel contractors began their operations, by following the timber belts along the Yilgarn railway line, and graduallygetting further westward, until at present we find them as far as Woolgangie, 63 miles from Kalgoorlie, and with the regular railway rates, I0. per ton per mile, this maybe considered the limit of payable timber at current rates. Although in the early days the reserve of timber along the railway line must have appeared as incalculable and inexhaustible as that of coal did in Europe a couple of centurys ago, the day is now near us when even this source will fail to meet the demands made upon it, for, although a good two years' supply is available or the areas under the axe, yet it is time to look ahead and find from whence the future supplies are to be drawn. Along the railways we find the zone of felling operations limited for want ofcommunication, and only such portions of the forests as are within six or seven miles of the railway come under the axe at present while virgin forests to the rear remain practically unexploited. The treatment of a hydrobiotite containing 0·64 per cent copper with various soluHons showed that a high percentage (up to 90 per cent) of the copper can be extracted under mild conditions (1 M BCI, 85°C) or withsaline solutions (20 per cent by weight NaCI or NH4F, 400°C). The latter results suggest that the copper is incorporated in the interstratified vermiculite of a vermicuHte-biotite mica and the solutions (NaCl and NH4F) which reacted with the vermiculite without attacking the biotite gave the highest extraction yields.In general, extraction yields with saline solutions increased with the temperature (between 100 and 400°C) and duration (3 or 6 days) of the treatment but were not appreciably affected by the initial pH of solutions.The results of RCI treatment especially may have a bearing on the hydrometallurgical treatment of refractory copper ores where copper is tied to gangue silicates.

Background information, formulae and a systematic set of procedures for estimating capital and operating costs for open pit mining equipment are presented in this paper. Firstly, equipment capital costs are required. These can be obtained from either suppliers, contractors or from first principles. The equipment is then divided into cost elements. Typically these are fuel and power requirements, spare parts consumption, wear items such as tyres, teeth and drill bits and finally repair and operating labour requirements. By consideration of the cost and life of each element a base cost can be derived. The base cost is then adjusted to suit specific site conditions such as the proximity to spare parts suppliers, the duty or ground conditions and the management and operator skills specific to the site. Hence, the same item of equipment can be costed to reflect different operations. Included are tables and data for typical plant items. Several examples are also given to illustrate the methodology being presented. The intention is to provide a set of procedures to allow costs to be built up from base level in a systematic and repeatable way. Applications for these costs include feasibility studies, budgetting and data for economic analyses.

The ocean floor is increasingly being discussed in terms of its resource potential. New discoveries, improved knowledge and access to unexplored areas of the deep sea and continental shelf are some factors contributing to a renewed interest in the seafloor exploration and mining industry. The industry has been referred to as the ænext minerals frontierÆ. To date, much of the research has focused on proving economic and technical viability of the industry, with environmental issues addressed locally. However, there is limited research internationally, and none known in Australia that considers the social viability of the industry, addressing issues such as regulatory contexts, international precedence and public acceptability. Does the nascent seafloor exploration and mining industry have a social license to operate? Does it have support amongst the wider community? If not, why not? The Wealth from Oceans National Research Flagship explored these questions by scoping the social issues that would surround an expansion. Two desktop studies provide insight into the current level of activity in seafloor exploration and mining, recent developments and the regulatory regimes on which the industry is based. One study focused on the situation in Australia, while the other was internationally focused. A series of workshops were held with key stakeholders from government agencies, industry and other interested parties, such as environmental groups and the fisheries industry. These workshops identified and explored the different stakeholdersÆ perceptions of the benefits, concerns, opportunities and key questions associated with an expansion of the seafloor mining industry. The desktop studies revealed that Australia is one of only a few countries with legislation specific to seafloor exploration and mining. Nevertheless, barriers to licence approval exist because of lack of precedent in applying this legislation. Consequently, the decision process can be vulnerable to political issues and subjective judgements. The outcomes from the stakeholder workshops suggest this inconsistency may be influenced by the high levels of concern and uncertainty over environmental impacts. Uncertainty over environmental impacts can influence the acceptability of an environmental impact assessment (EIA) and also mean the perception of risk is variable. Overall, this research suggests that the future of the seafloor exploration and mining industry will be highly dependent on AustraliaÆs ability to:improve the knowledge-base underpinning the regulatory regime,generate open and transparent communications between stakeholders, andimprove the understanding of policy and regulatory processes.

Clause 17 (1) of the Resource Management Act 1991 (duty to avoid, remedy, or mitigate adverse effects) provides the legislative basis for local authorities to impose resource consent conditions requiring land to be rehabilitated to approved uses during and after mining.

"Mine waste storages including tailings dams and waste rock dumps represent arguably the biggest risk on a mine site from both physical and geochemical viewpoints, related firstly to structural stability and the consequences of failure and secondly from potential on-going seepage or run-off of acid and metalliferous drainage (AMD). The risks are most likely to increase during operations and continue through the closure and post-closure phases, with the waste storages likely to be the most difficult features to resolve in the mine closure process. Contaminated water quality from tailings dams and waste rock dumps can require treatment "in perpetuity" at a cost of hundreds of millions of dollars. The problem is increasing with ever larger mine operations and waste generation volumes. This paper identifies leading practice methodologies in planning and operating mines and process plants to minimise the risks from tailings storages and how this might also affect waste rock management and even the design of mine excavations. These methodologies require a "big-picture" approach to develop an understanding of the overall issues and identify synergies between the different operational areas on a mine site that can reduce overall risk. With a conservative approach and realistic allowance for future costs it is possible to facilitate decisions at the mine planning stage that can reduce risk and save cost over the long term. This is in contrast to the common approach where each operational area is looking to minimise its own costs with a short-term view. Incorrect mine methodologies can be developed by allowing net present value (NPV) accounting methods to trivialise future closure issues.Methodologies discussed include: Integrated Waste Management - Significant structural improvements to tailings dams can be achieved if the structures can be incorporated into the waste rock dumps. Risk of AMD can also be reduced by utilising the tailings and waste rock effectively. This could go even further to consider the placement of wastes to limit mine void environmental issues; Process Optimisation - Water quality and the nature of potential tailings dam structures can be highly influenced by the geo-chemistry of the tailings. This can be modified by processing, where simple changes such as maintaining separate streams of geo-chemically different tailings rather than recombining them or by initiating further processing to remove problematic minerals such as sulphides; Enhancing Geophysical Properties - The geochemical performance of waste repositories can be greatly influenced by the geophysical properties of the stored materials, particularly the air-water characteristics, which are influenced by particle size, density and permeability. The geotechnical properties can be enhanced by strategic paddock dumping, blending and compaction.These methodologies are demonstrated by case histories.CITATION:Brett, D, 2013. A method has been developed for the prediction of the performance of multi-stage grinding-cyclone classification circuits of any degree of complexity on any ore for a wide range of operating conditions. The method involves the simulation of the circuit on a digital computer by means of. mathematical models of the individual units. At present, to establish the characteristics of the ore and the machines in mathematical terms, it is necessary to know the performance of a simple system on the ore for one known feed rate and feed sizing analysis.Further work on the separate identification of the terms defining the characteristics of the ore and the machines may permit the method to be applied directly to the data derived from small scale tests on ores.INTRODUCTIONThe cost of preparing metalliferous ores for concentration processes by, grinding and classification frequently represents a major portion of the cost of treating such ores, and it is necessary both from an economic and a metallurgical point of view that grinding and classification circuits should be operated at their optimum efficiency. It will be realized that the processes carried out in all units in such circuits behave according to physical laws and, if a mathematical representation of the laws applying to each unit could be derived, optimization of the overall process for any given conditions of feed or product may not be difficult.The physical processes in both tumbling mills and hydraulic classifiers are extremely complex and do not appear at present to be amenable to a rigorous mathematical analysis. The kinetic and practical aspects of the extraction of copper from copper-rich solutions by cementation on iron was investigated. Tests were made on the effect of stirring speed, cupric sulphate concentration, acid concentration, temperature, and ferric sulphate concentration on the reaction rate and excess iron consumption.Most kinetic investigations were conducted under a nitrogen atmosphere to prevent any oxidation of the iron or copper metals. The stirring mechanism for all tests incorporated the use of a rotating impeller above a static disc in the solution. The activation energy for cementation on the steel disc at high stirring speed was 8·6 kcal/mole, indicating a predominant chemical control.Increasing the pH first decreased, then above pH 3, increased the reaction rate. Additions of sodium sulphate also significantly increased the reaction rate.The use of high temperature and high pH under an inert atmosphere has been suggested for increasing the reaction rate and producing a high purity sponge copper product.

Gold-bearing veins have formed at a wide range of depths throughout the uplift history of the Otago Schist. The earliest gold mineralisation occurred during the later stages of Mesozoic metamorphism. This mineralisation was characterised by diffuse wall rock alteration with greenschist facies metamorphic or retrograde metamorphic mineral assemblages, and gold occurs in this altered rock. Quartz veins formed in .steeply dipping extensional fractures associated with this mineralisation type strike north to northeast. The Macraes mine exploits this deposit type. The present northwest strike of the mineralised zone at Macraes is a result of post-mineralisation deformation of the schistosity-parallel mineralised shear zone which hosts northeast striking extensional veins. This combination of schistosity-parallel shear zone and steeply dipping northeast striking veins may exist elsewhere in Otago, and this deposit type is most prospective. Steeply dipping quartz veins formed during post-metamorphic un-roofing of the Otago Schist strike northwest to west and occur as clusters of near-parallel structures in east and central Otago. These veins consist mainly of massive quartz, although some prismatic quartz occurs also. Breccia fragments in veins are common and these are generally silicified, with some gold. Wall rock alteration is negligible, and vein margins are sharp. A set of middle Tertiary veins occurs in northwest Otago. Most of these also strike northwest and dip steeply, but some strike northeast. These veins contain abundant ankeritic carbonate as well as quartz. The carbonate pervades adjacent wall rock as veinlets, but gold mineralisation is confined to veins. Quartz is commonly prismatic and vuggy, and contains gold, which is commonly coarse grained especially in silicified breccia zones. Associated veins contain stibnite. This vein type formed close to the paleosurface (>2 km). Mineralised veins in Marlborough currently strike northwest, but these have been rotated from northeast strike during Alpine Fault displacement of Marlborough from Otago. Some of these veins were formed under late metamorphic conditions and are similar to the north to northeast striking veins in Otago. As in Otago, this type should be considered to be most prospective if they have associated schistosity-parallel shears.

Drill cores from Section 62, New Broken Hill Consolidated Ltd., were used to study the petrology of rocks associated with the zinc lode. The distribution of the rock types in relation to the lode structure was determined. The distribution of the gahnite-bearing rocks was shown to be only partly conformable with the structure.It was concluded that large scale metasomatism was not widespread, that the rocks associated with the lode (except, perhaps, the quartz-gahnite-garnet rocks) were formed by metamorphism of sediments, and that rocks and lode were contemporaneously metamorphosed.INTRODUCTIONThis investigation was undertaken in order to study the rock types associated with the zinc lode of the Broken Hill orebody, and their relationship to the structure of the ore horizons. The work was confined almost entirely to the laboratory, and is therefore limited in its scope. It is hoped, however, that the information gained may throw some new light on the genesis of the lode.Certain inferences which are drawn from this work are at variance with the ideas of a number of earlier workers.In particular, the idea of large scale metasomatism developing many of the rocks associated with the lode, especially those containing manganese, is questioned. On the contrary, the rocks associated with the lode are more simply explained as highly metamorphosed sediments, in some cases modified by water introduced from surrounding rocks into zones of strong folding and faulting. Experimental investigations were made into the decoppering of lead, tin, and bismuth using a technique which approximates on the small scale to industrial practice.Decoppering lead with sulphur alone in the absence of tin and silver did not proceed to low copper values. With a minimum of 0·02 per cent Ag or 0·10 per cent Sn, lead was decoppered to less than 0·01 per cent Cuby stirring with 0·2 per cent S over 10 min. Decoppering of tin or bismuth proceeded rapidly to very low levels in the absence of any "catalytic" impurities, at any rate in excess of those concentrations normally encountered in commercially pure tin or bismuth.

Factors leading to the decision to use Joy Continuous Miners for pillar extraction in the Burwood Colliery are outlined. A detailed description is given of the Joy 1-CM-2 Continuous Miner, including the power supply to the machine, and the method of cutting coalfrom a face. Modifications found necessary in practice are dealt with.The Joy 10 S.C. shuttle car used in conjunction with the Miner, and alterations made to this unit, are then described, together with Ancillary units for the whole installation such as transformers, motor generator set, air compressor,_ cables for power supply and water supply for dust suppression.Special arrangements were necessary to transport the Miner and Shuttle Cars through the tunnel to the Victoria Tunnel seam, and the method of overcoming the transport difficulties is discussed. Manning of the Continuous Miner unit, and final preparation andsubsequent working of the pillars is outlined. Special attention must be given to maintenance of the machines.It is concluded that the combination of Joy Continuous Miner and Shuttle Car is an excellent method for removing pillars in the Burwood Colliery.INTRODUCTIONThis paper deals with the Burwood Colliery in the RH.P. Group in which some units are engaged in the mechanical extraction of pillars with Joy Continuous Miners.In 1941, an amendment to the Coal Mines Regulation Act of N.S.W. forbade the extraction of pillars by mechanical means unless with the express permission of the Minister for Mines. As this permission was not forthcoming, no mechanical extraction of pillars took place in Australia until 1954 As it was doubtful during most of this period whether mechanical extraction would ever come about, coal generally was won with a view to maximum extraction in the first workings, thus giving rise to centre gannon bord panels and 45° angle cut throughs as shown in Fig. 1.

In stopes of the 2000- and 2150-ft. levels in the North mine section of North Broken Hill Limited, whence a substantial proportion of the company's production is being drawn, and especially in stopes which involve the portion known as the Northern orebody, occurs it light-coloured friable porous material which represents average grade ore from which the lead and zinc minerals, and certain gangue constituents, have been largely or wholly removed by leaching. The 2000- and 2150-ft. levels lie, respectively, 1550 and 1700 ft. below extreme base of the pre-mine oxidized zone. Composition of the cellular product shows it to be supergene. Abundance data are presented for a comprehensive range of elements in oil shale samples from deposits located in Queensland. The techniques of instrumental neutron activation analysis and spark source mass spectrometry were used to obtain concentration data for up to 50 trace elements in each shale. These techniques were supplemented by other spectrometric methods to obtain data for major, minor and some trace elements. Sixty-four elements were determined quantitatively. This comprehensive characterisation of oil shale samples from the major deposits in Australia provides inorganic abundance data not previously available. It also provides important background information for processing studies and the associated environmental aspects of shale oil production and waste disposal.

At the Red Dome and Mungana deposits in north Queensland, Australia, it is proposed that mineralisation and alteration developed as a 'telescoped' overprinting continuum, ranging in style from hypothermal to epithermal, reflecting the major changes that developed in the regional setting over the period circa 325 - 290 Ma. Regional assessment suggests that this also applies to many other precious and base metal deposits within a 40 km length of the host Siluro-Devonian Chillagoe Formation.   A ten stage paragenetic sequence of structural preparation, multi phase intrusion and associated mineralisation, alteration and brecciation is postulated for the Chillagoe district.

Radioisotope x-ray methods for the on-stream determination of copper, lead, and zinc in mineral product slurries were developed, and were successfully tested at the plant of Cobar Mines Pty. Ltd.The tests were made in three stages. Measurements to determine the precision of analysis were made initially on briquettes of the mineral products. The effect of slurry solids content variations was then determined by measurements on the mineral products in a recirculating slurry loop. The radioisotope analyser was finally tested in a series of on-stream measurements in the plant.Copper, lead, and zinc in flotation feed and in copper concentrate were determined to a precision ranging between 1·4 and 15 per cent of the mean element concentration in the slurry solids. These precisions are within limits required for plant control purposes at Cobar.
