THE electrolytic refining of metals for the removal of undesirable impurities has become a recognized necessity in the nonferrous field. Copper, lead, zinc, nickel, silver and gold have been produced in this manner for years. The United States Metals Refining Co., realizing that considerable quantities of lead and tin could be made available to the trade if a satisfactory method of purification of these metals could be established, decided to investigate the possibilities of electrolytic solder. In cooperation with Dr. Edward F. Kern, of the School of Mines at Columbia University, the company developed a process of electrolytic refining of lead-tin alloys using a tin-lead fluosilicate electrolyte. A pilot plant was installed in November, 1927, and the commercial unit was put in October, 1929. Since that time thousands of tons of electrolytic solder have been produced in this plant and consumed by all branches of industry that use solder.

A new probabilistic approach is introduced for slope stability analysis including adverse impact of blasting vibrations. The material strength within a slope area is randomized in this bi-variate joint probability analysis. To be a completely general engineering method, the new probabilistic approach employs the random variable transformation technique: the Hermite model of the Gaussian transformation function, which transforms the experimental histogram of strength values to the standard Gaussian variables. Because bi- normal joint probability is analyzed on the true probability region projected on the Gaussian transformed variable plane, it is an exact solution of slope stability based on the available sample data. Details of the probabilistic approach are given through a case study on an iron ore mine. The case study demonstrated that the probabilistic approach is effective and simple enough to be a routine engineering practice for slope analysis.

During the past five years, the mining industry has been subjected to new operating constraints that are unprecedented in number, scope, and urgency. The industry must operate in a safer, cleaner manner, yet produce more without large price increases. Compliance with any new sweeping legislation is always difficult-and particularly so in today's adverse economic climate, which is being aggravated by the steady stream of environmental control and tax-reform programs. In effect, while government is unwittingly but surely undercutting the country's productive capabilities, it blames industry for the resulting failure to meet consumer demand. Any such real or alleged failure then brings heightened bitterness from Congress. During the recent energy shortage, for instance, threats of nationalization were ventilated in public along with proposals to abolish the mineral depletion allowance.

VArIoUs classes of coals are recognized in this country at the present time. These classes depend largely upon physical characteristics rather than upon chemical composition, and consequently they cannot be accurately defined. The divisions into anthracite, semi-anthracite and semi-bituminons are fairly satisfactory; but the term bituminous embraces so large a variety of coal that it is of little value, and the term lignite is so loosely applied that it has little or no place in a scientific classification.

The recently established SME-AIME Education Board has completed its first full year of operation, and its six constituent committees-Accreditation, Career Guidance, Continuing Education, Educational Statistics, and Scholarship-have been extremely active in identifying and initiating programs to serve the educational needs of the Society of Mining Engineers and its members. The Continuing Education Committee-primarily concerned with the needs and problems associated with providing a continuing education program for SME members-is responsible for: (1) determining the need for short course offerings; (2) developing needed courses, along with new means and opportunities of presentation; and (3) scheduling and evaluating course presentation. In response to this charge, the committee has sponsored two short courses at the SME-AIME Fall Meeting in St. Louis and three short courses at the AIME Annual Meeting in Denver. Its major effort, however, has been directed toward the 1978 SME-AIME Fall Meeting to be held in Orlando, Fla., where 18 days of short-course instruction have been scheduled. A portion of these courses will be presented prior to the meeting, with the remainder to be presented in Nassau, Bahamas, immediately following the meeting.

INTRODUCTION TO PROBABILITY THEORY The mathematical theory of probability provides the foundation for the interpretations and inferences that can be made from statistical techniques. Probability theory is a broad field of study in itself, and can only be touched on here in order to provide the necessary back- ground for a more complete understanding of statistical analysis. Probability is concerned with the outcome of random events. It had its beginnings in the theory of games of chance which were of great interest to European mathematicians during the last half of the 17th century. I have long been convinced that the gaseous elements, either combined or entrained (occluded), in steel play a much more important role than is ordinarily admitted. This is probably due to the difficulties encountered in the accurate quantitative estimation of gases, some of which Mr. Cain has referred to, as well as to the fact that, considered from the weight-percentage basis, gas content is measurable only in hundredths or even thousandths of 1 per cent. Volumetrically, however, the results ob-tained by modern research are startling, to say the least. Baraduc-Muller,1 as cited by Mr. Cain, pumped out of 1000-lb. ingots of basic Bessemer steel 2100 l. of gas. or about 75 cu. ft., at normal temperature and pressure, per ton of steel. In other words, we are to understand that Bessemer steel normally carries about fifteen times its own volume of gas. According to Baraduc-Müller's table of results, which is given here-with, carbon monoxide, nitrogen, and hydrogen are important consti-tuents of Bessemer steel, the latter gas being undoubtedly formed by the

Potassium-argon dating of the late Mesozoic and Cenozoic intermediate to acidic plutons and volcanic rocks of Arizona and northern Sonora demonstrates the existence of two distinct magmatic episodes. The earlier episode begins in late Campanian time and dies out before the middle Eocene. Following a quiescent period in middle and late Eocene time, magmatism increases in Oligocene time, becomes most intense at the Oligocene-Miocene boundary and dies out as the Pliocene is approached. Pliocene magmatism is primarily confined to extrusion of post-orogenic basalts. The late Mesozoic-early Cenozoic magmatic pulse is essentially confined within the limits of the classical Laramide orogeny (Laramie through Wasatch time). The mid-Tertiary pulse is contemporaneous with the mid-Tertiary Basin and Range orogeny. The Laramide provides an excellent specific example of Umbgrove's concept of the pulse of the earth and in general his concept appears to be meaningful. Copper porphyry mineralization is time-congruent with Laramide magmatism and there seems to be no doubt as to the existence of a genetic relationship between the two phenomena. Two origins are tenable: direct accumulation of the copper sulfides in the copper porphyry liquid magmatic environment; or, introduction of the mineral constituents entirely from a larger source magma when the host rock is already crystalline. Transgression and regression of the epicontinental seas provide an excellent indicator of orogeny and epeirogeny. There was an overall transgression of the epicontinental seas from early Triassic time through the Turonian epoch in early late-Cretaceous time. Thereafter, there is a relatively continuous regression of the seas until the present time. Both the earlier transgressive episode and the later retreat are intermpted by temporary but distinct reversals. These interruptions can be correlated with classical orogenies. There are six distinct orogenies so indicated in the Mesozoic-Cenozoic eras. These occur at approximately 35 to 40 m.y. intervals. The regression of the epicontinental seas following the Turonian epoch was contemporaneous with the deepening of the Pacific ocean basin over the Darwin Rise. As the Darwin Rise was collapsing the East Pacific Rise was being elevated. The Western United States, situated on the eastern flank of the East Pacific Rise, was upwarped and tilted toward the east. Epeirogeny is the primary consequence of processes that operate on a global scale. Orogeny is an exothennic process that is limited in space and is treated here as a secondary consequence of epeirogenic-initiated warping. The off-campus buildings of the University of Arizona Geochronology Laboratories rest on the volcanic rocks of Tumamoc Hill. From this hill, the observer may obtain a beautiful view of typical Basin and Range topography. The city of Tucson lies below, contained within the broad Santa Cruz basin and surrounded on all sides by characteristic NW-SE trending ranges towering as much as 7000 ft above the valley floor. Since the senior author arrived in Tucson eight years ago, a great deal more has been learned about the geochronology of this and neighboring basins and ranges. For example, the volcanic rocks underlying the laboratory at Tumamoc Hill were shown on the state geologic map as Quaternary basalt. A student of the senior author has demonstrated that the so-called basalts are in fact alkali-andesites (Halva, 1961), and we now know that these alkali-andesites or doreites (Mielke, 1965) are of early Miocene age rather than Quaternary age (Bikerman and Damon, 1965). Is it any wonder then that geologists disagree on the nature and time of Basin and Range volcanism, plutonism and tec-tonism? The plain fact is that few definitive Cenozoic fossil sites were available upon which to base a chronology and geologists were forced to guess the ages of rocks in order to achieve the semblance of a time classification. We have now made considerable progress in developing a K-Ar chronology for the volcanic and plutonic rocks of the Basin and Range (Bikerman, 1965; Damon and Bikerman, 1965; Damon et al, 1964 and 1965; Mauger et al, 1965). It is the purpose of this paper to point out the main features of this chronology and to discuss the relationship of magma-tism to orogeny-epeirogeny during post-Turonian time. interfacial films have frequently been observed at interfaces between certain crude oils and water. Several investigators have postulated that the presence of these films should influence the efficiency of oil recovery in water drive or waterflood operations. They may also influence the stability of emulsions which are sometimes a problem in petroleum production, and may be a factor in the fonation of paraffin deposits in oil well tubing and flow lines. This paper presents a technique with which a modified Langmuir film balance may be used to study the compressibility and collapse pressure of these natural interfacial films. Experimental data are presented for several nude oil-water systems. Data developed are used to infer the phase state of the film as a function of such variables as rate of reduction of interfacial area, ionic composition of the subtrate and pH of the subtrate. A film of known physical characteristics is shown to have a sinnificant effect on oil recovery from an unconsolidated sand pack. Possible applications of these results to petroleum production are discussed. INTRODUCTION The use of water to displace petroleum from reservoir rocks is of major importance both as a primary and a secondary recovery process. As water invades the rock, oil is completely displaced from some pores and left as a discontinuous phase in other pores. The manner in which water moves from pore to pore is strongly influenced by capillary forces. In view of the complexity of reservoir fluid systems, there can be little doubt that complicated interactions take place at both the liquid-solid and oil-water interfaces. One of the more interesting, and least understood, of the phenomena which take place at the oil-water interface is the formation of interfacial films. These films are believed to result from the adsorption of high molecular weight polar molecules at the interface.l.2 Presence of such molecules may cause a striking alteration in interfacial tension. When the oil-water interfacial area of certain crudes is rapidly reduced, a thin region (film) about the interface assumes the appearance of a solid membrane, and striations, wrinkles and gross distortions may occur. If such a film is solid, it should greatly alter the interfacial tension normally assumed to exist between the oil and water phases. If the membrane is continuous, a solid phase would separate the oil and water. Interfacial films between crude oil and water were observed in 1949 by Bartell and Niederhausers who commented upon the apparent rigidity of the films and their possible importance in the petroleum industry. Morrell and Egloff4 had earlier attributed the extreme stability of emulsions of sea water in fuel oil to very stable asphaltic films. Numerous investigators have observed rigid films in the course of crude oil-water interfacial tension determinations by the pendent drop method. Several investigators5,6,2 have separated inter-facially active materials from crudes and attempted to characterize them chemically. Reisberg and Doscher,2 using Ventura crude, showed the interfacial tension against water (as measured by the pendent drop method) to be affected by aging, contraction and expansion of the interface, and the pH of the water. These investigators attributed the adhesion of oil to a water-wetted surface and the distortions of flow paths in glass capillaries to the presence of rigid films. Dodd7 has studied the interfacial viscosity of adsorbed films and found them to be non-Newtonian in behavior. Craighead and Harvey8 reported a series of displacements in tubes packed with 60 mesh glass beads. They interpreted the results as indicating an effect of stearic acid films on waterflood recovery and imply that natural films may produce similar results.

Oxygen the present work on decavbuvization of liquid iron and previous studies on the kinetics of nitrogen absorption and desorplion are discussed in terms of the postulated mechanism, ManY of the early studies of rate of decarburization of liquid steel were of an exploratory nature and laboratory exppriments carried out pertained to open-hearth or oxygen steelmaking processes. References to previous work on this subject may be found in a literature survey made by Ward. Using more sophisticated experimental techniques, several investigators have recently studied the kinetics of decarburization of molten Fe-C alloys in oxygen-bearing gases. For example, Baker et al2.' reported their findings on the rate of decarburization of liquid iron, levitated by an electromagnetic field, in carbon dioxide-carbon monoxide-helium atmospheres. In these levitation experiments the samples used were small in size, e.g., -0.6-cm-diam spheres weighing -0.7 g, and the rates were measured for decarburization from about 5 to 1 pct C at 1660°C. The rates obtained under their experimental conditions were considered to be controlled primarily by gaseous diffusion through the boundary layer at the surface of the levitated melt. Parlee and coworkers3 measured the rate of absorption of carbon monoxide in liquid iron. The rates were found to follow first-order reaction kinetics, yielding a reaction velocity or a mass transfer coefficient in the range 0.2 to 0.4 cm per min. The coefficient was found to decrease with increasing carbon content of the melt. These investigators attributed the observed rates to the transfer of carbon or oxygen through the diffusion boundary layer adjacent to the surface of the melt. In the work to be reported in this paper, an attempt has been made to study the kinetics of gas-metal surface reactions involved in the decarburization of liquid iron. EXPERIMENTAL The experiments consisted of melting 80-g samples from an Fe-1 pct C master alloy in an induction furnace and decarburizing in controlled CO2-CO mixtures at 1 atm pressure and 1580°C. The master alloy was prepared by adding graphite to electrolytic "Plastiron" melted in racuo. None of the impurities in the master alloy exceeded 0.005 pct. The reacting gases were dried by passage through columns of anhydrone; in addition, CO2 impurity in carbon monoxide was removed by passage through a column of ascarite. A schematic diagram of the apparatus is shown in Fig. 1. A 1.25-in.-diam recrys-tallized alumina crucible containing the sample was placed inside a 3-in.-diam quartz reaction tube, all of which was surrounded by an induction coil. A 450-kcps induction generator was used as the power source. Water-cooled brass flanges, which contained the gas inlet, gas exit, and sight port, were sealed to the top of the reaction tube with epoxy resin. The reacting gases were metered with capillary flowmeters and passed through a platinum wire-wound alumina preheating tube, 0.25 in. ID and 11 in. long. The gases were preheated to about 1300°C. A disappearing-filament optical pyrometer was used to measure the melt temperature. The pyrometer was initially calibrated against a Pt-6 pct Rh/Pt-30 pct Rh thermocouple. The temperature was controlled to within +10°C by manually adjusting the power input to the induction coil. In a typical experiment, an 80-g sample of the master alloy was melted in a CO2-CO atmosphere having pcO2/pco = 0.02 and flowing at 1 liter per min. A negligible amount of carbon was lost and no significant reduction of alumina from the crucible occurred during melting, e.g., 0.005 pct Al in the metal. After reaching the experimental temperature of 1580°C, the gas composition was changed to that desired for a particular series of decarburization experiments. The duration of the transient period for obtaining the desired gas composition at the surface of the melt was about 20 sec . The flow rate of the reacting gas was maintained at 1 liter per min. After a predetermined reaction time, the power to the furnace was turned off. During freezing, which took about 10 sec, the amount of gas evolution was not sufficient to result in a significant loss of carbon. The samples were analyzed for carbon by combustion and in a few cases they were analyzed for oxygen by the vacuum-fusion method. RESULTS A marked increase in the rate of decarburization of iron with increasing pcO2/pco ratio in the gas stream is demonstrated by the experimental results given in Figs. 2 and 3 for pco2/pco ratios from 0.033 to 4.0. In one series of experiments, denoted by filled triangles in Fig. 2, the reacting gas was diluted with argon (48 vol pct) resulting in a slower rate of decarburization. Samples from two series of experiments with pco2/pco = 0.033 and pco2/pco = 0.10 (with argon dilufion) were analyzed for oxygen. In these Samples the oxygen content increased with reaction time

This paper describes the features of a computer cost model developed to estimate requirements and costs of individual coal mining projects. Detailed cost analysis procedures for both coal mining and preparation are incorporated into the model. This model has been developed over a period of seven years through funding provided by the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI). The model follows a process engineering approach for the estimation of all project capital and operating costs. A discounted cash flow analysis procedure is also designed into the model to allow for the solution of cost/ton or cost/MMBtu of clean coal production. The model can be applied to most surface or underground mining deposits and can accommodate a wide variety of coal washing situations. This flexibility makes the model a particularly useful tool for preliminary project analysis, property screening, investment analysis, mining technology assessment, coal cleaning level assessment, and general property valuation.

The power drag scrapers and the slackline cableway excavator have been called "long-range excavators." Broadly, their field of usefulness is restricted to work in which their long range of action permits them to operate economically, and which other, possibly more conventional, excavating units cannot do. Both of these machines dig or lift material and transport it to a remote dumping point. They combine these two functions in a single machine, nearly always in a single straight-line motion. The purpose of this paper is to examine the important features that distinguish the machines in this group from each other, as well as from other groups. The Machines The "power drag scraper" is a long-range excavating machine that employs a bottomless drag scraper operated back and forth between digging and dumping points by two haulage cables. The typical arrangement is that of Fig. 1. This is the "slusher" of the underground mine, as well as the "dragline scraper" of the sand and gravel industry, and other open-pit mining operations.

Particles present in mineral processing systems that are termed ultrafine are those that are small enough to be unaffected by gravity or the flow conditions imposed on the pulp. As such, their interaction with one another and with other larger particles are controlled by specific attractive and repulsive colloidal or surface interactions. Electrostatic repulsion between ultrafines is dominated by surface potential, double layer thickness and specific adsorption potential effects - controlled by pH, salt and complexing ion concentrations. Attraction due to van der Waals interactions must be assessed in terms of bulk and surface coating effects and of particle size and shape. The net effect of attraction and repulsion must finally be related to the average kinetic energy of particles in the real system.

Results of correlations between strength-development and sintering shrinkage occurring during induration are presented. A mathematical treatment of the shrinkage kinetics is, next, given and is based on the use of semi-empirical equations. The discussion stresses the significance of kinetic constants and activation energies in the assessment of iron ore concentrates for pelletizing and induration. Next, starting with the assumption that there is a need for parameters to characterize the iron-ore concentrates and relate these parameters to shrinkage-kinetic constants and balling behaviour, results of compaction measurements and pore structure characterization (mercury porosimetry) are presented and discussed.
