Monte Carlo methods have been used to compute the arrangements of interstitial atoms dissolved in tetrahedral sites in bcc lattices. It is assumed that the presence of an interstitial atom "blocks " a certain number of neighboring sites and prevents their occupancy. Sites "blocked" by more than one filled site are allowed for. The computed values of. the mean occupation number (defined as the ratio of the total number of sites blocked to the number of solute atoms are used to calculate the configurational entropies of the solutions. These entropies are compared with those resulting from previous theoretical studies of this problem and also with available experin~ental data for the p Zr-H, Nb-H, V-H, and Ta-H systems. Evidence is also given that the "blocking" explanation of low limiting compositions in these systems, rather than this being due to initial limitations on the number of sites available, is probably correct. THE ideal partial configurational entropy of mixing of an interstitial solute in a metal is given by: where p is the number of interstitial sites per metal atom and Xi is the atomic fraction of the interstitial. For the bcc lattice. which we shall be concerned with in this paper, the interstitial positions are shown in Fig. 1. It can be seen that for the tetrahedral sites, p=6. whereas for the octahedral sites, p = 3. Different emphasis has been placed on the relative importance of energy and entropy effects in determining deviations from ideality in interstitial solid solutions. In some cases the same system, e.g., Fe-C, has been described by the contradictory regular and athermal solution models indicating that the enthalpy and entropy functions, derived from equilibrium data, are frequently not accu.rate enough to differentiate between these treatments. However, for certain metal-hydrogen solutions the equilibrium data is available over sufficiently wide ranges of temperature and composition to permit a reasonably accurate determination of the compositional variation of the heats and entropies. Hoch&apos; has attempted to interpret the results of interstitial solid solutions in terms of a regular solution model. In the case of the Ta-H system where 13 = 6, this model entails fitting the experimental relative partial entropies of solution, asH, to the equation: where ASgs is the relative partial excess entropy of solution of hydrogen. Hoch found that the results of Mallett and Koeh1 could be fitted to this equation with an approximately constant value of AF up to XH = 0.25. However, it is apparent from the solubility isotherms in this system which become asymptotic to the composition TaH that, since (Xh /6 - ~Xh ) becomes infinite only at TaH6, it is necessary that AS<&apos; tends to infinity at TaH. In other words, the low saturation composition of TaH, instead of the anticipated TaH,, eliminates the possibility of applying regular solution theory to such systems. Rather large negative excess configurational entropies must exist at higher hydrogen concentrations in order to explain the lower saturation values. To account for these low limiting compositions and excess entropies two distinctly different approaches have been followed. Rees and many others1-l2 have assumed that not all interstitial sites are crystallographically equivalent with respect to the interstitial addition; that is, in Eq. [I] p is less than the value anticipated from geometrical considerations. To describe, say, a bcc metal-hydrogen system with a limiting composition of MH by this approach one would consider that p = 1 in the first instance instead of p = 6.&apos;j3 In some cases, nonintegral values of B have been taken in order to improve the fit with the experimental data over limited ranges of composition. The other approach which has been used to explain the low saturation compositions is to assume that, although all sites are available for occupancy, strong repulsive interactions exist between the neighboring interstitial atoms, and hence occupancy of any site excludes or blocks a certain number of neighboring sites from being occupied. Earliest treatments of this concept considered the exclusion of an integral number, of nearest-neighbor sites from being occupied at all concentrations. In this case, the partial configurational entropy is given by: These early treatments failed to allow for the overlap of the blocked sites which will arise at all but the very lowest concentrations. More recently attempts have been made to calculate the effect of this decrease in the number of blocked sites on the configurational entropy. Using the quasichemical treatment of interstitial solid solutions as given by Lacher and assuming that an infinite repulsive interaction energy existed between the solute atoms. atom obtained an approximate configurational entropy applicable to the blocking with overlap case:

Since April, 1962, Shell Oil Co. has operated a peripheral line-drive waterflood of the 10.750-ft lower Tuscaloosa (Cretaceous) Denkman sand in the Little Creek field. Located in southwestern Mississippi in the lower Tuscaloosa trend, the field was discovered by Shell in Jan., 1958. Among the largest in the trend, the accumulation is controlled stratigraphically and occurs in an extensive series of alluvial-point bar deposits across a nose that dips gently to the south. The crude oil is 39" API gravity and was highly undersaturated at initial conditions. Early production behavior indicated a depletion drive with slight water influx; primary recovery wm estimated to be 25 million bbl, or 24.5 percent of stock-tank oil originally in place. A.s a result of a favorable mobility ratio and remarkably uniform rock properties, the volumetric sweep eficiency in the waterflood has exceeded 90 percent. Despite the high connate water saturation (56 percent), the displacement efficiency by water injection has been quite efficient, contrary to traditional concepts. Based on observed field flood-out performance, ultimate recovery is calculated to be 46 million bbl. As anticipated, the production rate began declining during 1964 due to a continu ing reducrion in the number of producing wells as flood fronts advanced across the field. Cumulative recovery as of Jan., 1968, was 44.8 million bbl; waterflood operations ~hould be complete by 1970. Introduction Most waterfloods described in reservoir engineering literature involve pattern operations, the most common of which is the five-spot pattern. Only occasiona&apos;lly are linear drives described, even though there probably are increasing numbers being put into operation. Increasing use of linear floods may reflect the accelerating trend towards early application of fluid-injection programs when linear drives are more efficient, as was the case at Little Creek. However. the Little Creek operation is unusual in several respects. It is one of a few successful waterfloods conducted in sands with connate water saturations approaching 60 percent, and it is among the deepest successful water-floods being operated anywhere. Development The Little Creek field was discovered in Jan., 1958, in the lower Tuscaloosa trend in southwestern Mississippi (Fig. 1). The discovery well, Shell-Lemann No. 1, was drilled on a seismic closure about 2 miles southeast of lower Tuscaloosa production at Sweetwater. The well was completed in the Denkman sand at 10,752 ft, and on initial potential it flowed 588 BOPD of 39" API crude on a %+-in. choke; psi was 730 and GOR was 442:l. Development proceeded rapidly on 40-acre spacing, and by the end of 1958 the field was producing approximately 9,100 B/D from 56 wells. Almost all this production came from the northern half of the field. The southern part was discovered in Nov., 1958, at a location almost 2 miles from previously established production. Subsequent drilling established an apparent conneotion about half a mile wide between the twd areas. Development of the field was practically complete by 1961 with the drilling of 155 producers and 35 dry holes. Some early wells were completed open hole but moslt are completed with casing cemented through the productive interval and perforated for production. Geology The lower Tuscaloosa structure in this area is a north-south nose with maximum dips of about 2" on the flanks. There is no discernible faulting at the producing horizon. Productive limits of the field are shown in Fig. 2, which is contoured on a marker just above the main productive zone. A common water level at 10,415 ft subsea was logged at both the northwest and southeast ends of the field. There is a gross oil column of nearly 100 ft (Fig. 2). Since there is less than 40 ft of closure, it is apparent that bhe accumubtion is controlled stratigraphically, being limited by a sand pinch-out across the creslt of the nose. The total produc-

Laboratory research has been conducted to evaluute the effect of clay hydration on the permeability to gas of water-sensitive reservoir sands. Samples of a .sandstone containing trace amounts of montmorillonite and a sample of montmorillonite were .studied in the laboratory to detertnine whether swelling or dispersion was the cause of permeability reduction in these samples. Heliuin, containing various amounts of water vapor, was used to hydrate the clay minerals and to determine the gas permeability at various stages of clay hydration. The amount of water adsorbed by the samples using this method is small. The nonwetting-phase permeability at higher water saturations war investigated by saturating the with water and measuring the permeability to humid helium while decreasing the water saturation, Relative-permeability curves obtained from results of these procedures were used to estimate the effect of the swelling of trace amounts of mont/tlorillonite on the permeability of the .samples. Most of the damage to the permeability when reservoir sands containing trace amounts of montmorillonite are exposed to fresh water is due to dispersion and movement of clays. Blockage of pores by the increased volume of expanded montmorillonite is believed to result in permeability damage that is small in comparison to the observed damage to the samples tested. INTRODUCTION Studies have shown that permeability is severely damaged when sands containing only small amounts of montmorillonite are contacted by fresh water.15 When samples of sands containing large amounts of montmorillonite are placed in fresh water in the laboratory, these samples may completely disintegrate, forming an unconsolidated mass of larger volume than that occupied by the dry sample." In this case, it is apparent that the swelling of montmoril-lonite has destroyed the pore structure of the sand. If only a trace of montmorillonite is present in a sand. samples may remain intact when saturated with water, although the permeability to water is a small fraction of the gas permeability of the dry sample. Many workers in the field of water sensitivity have attributed this reduction in permeability to the blocking of pores and reduction of pore size by the increased volume occupied by expanded mont- niorillonite. if the sand contains a detectable amount of montmorill&apos;onite or mixed-layer clay containing rnontmorillonite. Logically3 the smaller amount of montmorillonite present in a sand, the smaller should he the effect of montnlorillonite swelling on permeability; however, the quantity of montmorillonite sufficient to cause severe damage by swelling is not known. Although hundreds of samples have been tested in our laboratory, no correlation has been established between the amount of montmorillonite in samples and the permeability reduction caused by fresh water. To many petroleum engineers, the phrase "clay swelling" is synonymous with "water sensitivity", or "permeability reduction" implying that any formation damage due to the hydration of clays is caused by swelling. Although all clays adsorb water on their surfaces, montmorillonite is the only clay mineral commonly found in reservoir rocks which adsorbs water between intercrystalline layers, resulting in expansion of the clay particle. As montmoril-lonite swells, the first few layers of water adsorbed between platelets are strongly held and well oriented, and the montmorillonite retains its crystalline structure, although expanded. As swelling of sodium montmorillonite continues, the platelets become farther apart and the forces orienting the platelets in the crystalline structure become weaker, resulting in a less orderly orientation of platelets. In an abundance of water, small groups of platelets may become detached from the original monl-rnorillonite particle and may be dispersed throughout the water phase. Because of its swelling properties, sodium montmorillonite is very easily dispersed in water. Particles of other clay minerals. such as illite and kaolinite may also be dispersed in water. causing water sensitivity of sands not containing montmorillonite. The presence of an immobile layer of water adsorbed on the surface of clays has been considered a possible cause of the low permeability to water of dirty sands. Grim states that the thickness of the layer of immobile water held by sodium montrnorillonite is three nlolecular layers or 7.5 A (angstroms), with some orientation of water extending to 100 A. Assuming a very thick, immobile water layer adsorbed on the surface of a pore represented by a capillary tube, the maximum effect of the water layer on permeability can be calculated. Using a pore radius of 10 &apos; cm and an immobile water layer of 50 A. the calculation shows the permeability to be reduced only 2 per cent. Similar calculations can be used to show that the effect of electro-osmotic counterflow is of the same order of magnitude as that of bound water. The relation between the course, or path, of the fracture of metals and alloys, produced in service or as a result of certain laboratory tests, and the crystalline units of which such materials are composed is of utmost importance. The fracture of normal material is, in general, intracrystalline, i.e., it consists of a break across the grains rather than of a separation between them. An interorystalline fracture indicates either that the metal is of very inferior quality or that the break occurred under very unusual conditions, e.g., at a very high temperature. The usual mechanical tests, when applied to metals of the type that breaks with an intercrystalline fracture, merely measure the coherence of adjacent grains for one another and reveal little as to the real properties of the metal itself. Even such a soft plastic substance as lead, under suitable conditions, may be rendered so weak and brittle that the metal can be easily crumbled into powder by the fingers although the constituent grains have lost none of the intrinsic properties of lead. Various erroneous explanations of this behavior of lead have appeared in the scientific literature, the change being described usually as an allotropic one. The importance, in an industrial sense, of a proper explanation of this type of the corrosion of lead justifies the description of the type of metal deterioration that follows. Corroded Lead Sheathing In Figs. 1 and 2 are shown two typical specimens of corroded lead sheathing selected from materials submitted to the Bureau of Standards for examination. Fig; 1 shows a section of the sheathing of an aerial cable; Fig. 2, that of the lead covering of a subterranean feeder-line of an electric light system. In this case the deterioration had proceeded to a much great&apos;er extent than in the case shown in Fig. 1 so that certain portions of the metal could easily be crumbled into a coarse gray powder by the fingers. INSULATING materials include a wide variety of nonmetallic mineral products such as exfoliated vermiculite, expanded gypsum, 85 pct magnesia, diatomite, asbestos, perlite, cellular glass, pumice, silica aerogel, expanded aggregates and mineral wool. Except mineral wool, most of these products, or the materials from which they are manufactured, are described in other chapters of this book. PROPERTIES OF INSULATING MATERIALS The insulating properties of the materials considered in this chapter result in general from entrapping extremely small pockets of air in such a manner that heat is not transferred by convection. The minimum heat conductivities of such insulating materials are slightly greater therefore than the conductivity of still air. In addition, conductivity varies with the overall density of the material, the temperature range in which the measurements are made, and the form into which the material is fabricated. However, the numerical value of heat conductivity should not be the sole criterion of an insulating material; for a particular application it may be advantageous to use a material of somewhat higher conductivity in order to secure other desirable engineering properties. This is especially true with certain materials that are used because of their refractoriness. Comparative insulating values of some commonly used insulating materials are shown in Table 1. In comparing the values presented in this table it should be borne in mind that heat conductivity varies with the mean temperature, with the overall density, and with the amount of moisture present. With fibrous or granular materials it varies with fiber or grain size and with the amount and kind of binder, if any is used. Under some circumstances it may vary with the arrangement of
