A simple robust rock bolt load gage was tested in the laboratory to define its characteristic behavior and to obtain a measure of its performance. The gage uses three vibrating wire sensors crimped 120 (2.09 rad) apart into the outer surface of a hollow cylindrical steel, tube. The resonant frequencies of the wires change as the gage is loaded. This change is read with a Creare meter developed for the Bureau of Mines on a previous contract to read borehole stress gage results. A statistical analysis of data obtained defines the variables influencing results. A U.S. patent (3,914,992) assigned by the author to the Dept. of the Interior was granted Oct. 28, 1975.

At present, in Japan, the application of in-place leaching technique to the mined-out stopes has been carried out at two copper mines in a comparatively large scale. These mines are the Kosaka mine and the Tsuchihata mine, both are situated in the north-east district of Japan. At first, the author would like to tell about the in-place leaching operations and their results at these two mines. Then, the problems involved in the application of in-place leaching technique to the Japanese metal mines and the possibility of the future development of this technique in Japan are referred, too. Next, as to the research works, the author would like to explain briefly about some of the important results obtained in the recent studies on in-place leaching as well as on bacterial leaching in Japan.

NOWHERE in the world has cone classification in closed-circuit grinding with tube mills reached as high a state of development as on the Witwatersrand. In the development of the Far East section the necessity of fine grinding to obtain. satisfactory residues gave rise to a situation with which the cone could cope only at a great sacrifice in efficiency of tube-mill grinding. H., A. White1 recognized the limitation of the cone in his study of the theory of tube milling as early as 1915, but it was not until Ewing, Davis and. Willey2 carried out their tests at Springs Mines during 1920 that the advantages of mechanical classifiers' were demonstrated. During the fall of 1924 the writer supervised a series of tests with Dorr classifiers undertaken by Mr. White, Consulting Metallurgist, at the mill of the Geduld Proprietary Mines, Ltd., Dersley, Transvaal (Far East Rand). The importance of classification to obtain efficient tube-mill grinding was thoroughly demonstrated. The installation of classifiers of the above type that followed the test, confirmed the results of the experimental work.

TRONA, Calif., is a miniature urban community of some 3500 people, located on the northwest shore of dry Searles Lake in the extreme northwest corner of San Bernardino County, approximately 186 miles north and east of Los Angeles. Since it is situated on the Mojave Desert, a typically desert climate prevails with wide variations in temperature between day and night, extreme daytime summer heat, and cool to cold winters. Rainfall averages somewhat less than 4 in. per year, and dust storms are common. The rate of evaporation, however, is great, amounting to 6 to 9 ft of water per year. The extremely low humidity makes the summer heat of 110°F tolerable with only a mild, temporary discomfort.

It is well known that many so-called free-milling silver arcs are so classed more from their value necessitating a cheap process than from a real adaptability to raw amalgamation. Such low--grade ores, carrying more or less sulphurets, are more profitably treated by a cheap rapid process than by the more effective but costly process of roasting arid amalgamation. The tailings are sometimes crudely concentrated, or, after lying and becoming partially oxidized, are again worked in pans. Of late years, by the use of improved methods of concentration, many old low-grade tailings-piles have been reworked to a good profit; and in some improved mills arrangements are made to concentrate before or after amalgamation, thus making a single treatment in mill suffice. It is self-evident that on a low-grade ore a small increase in percentage saved is of no commercial advantage if accompanied by a material increase in cost, and therefore a cheap and continuous system of work is the real necessity, if a fair saving be effected. As an illustration of the possibilities of combined concentration and amalgamation on some ores, the following results of a working test at the New York Ore-Milling and Testing Works will be of some interest. Systematic investigations on silver-rare earth metal systems have been extended on the Ag-Ce system in order to clarify the discrepancies reported in literature. The phase diagram has been reinvestigated on the base of thermal analyses and of microstructure examination on cast and annealed specimen. All intermetallic phases Ag4Ce, Ag3Ce, Ag2Ce and AgCe show no extended range of homogeneity, they melt congruently fm), or decompose peritectically (d) at 815 °C (d), 1030 °C (m), 855 °C (d) and 855 °C (m), respectively. The system shows eutectics at 793 °C/10 at.%, 780 °C/42 at.%, and about 505 °C/81 at.% Ce. d-Ce dissolves up to 2 at .% Ag and decomposes metatectically at 710 °C. Furthermore, the phase transformation of the intermetallics would be clarified. The phases Ag5Ce and Ag51Ce14 reported in literature could not be verified.

TWO recent review papers have considered the origin of primary and secondary recrystalliza-tion textures from the point of view of oriented nucleation and oriented growth theories."' Both theories require nuclei for primary recrystallization but provide no unequivocal answer to the question of what nuclei are. The answer to the same question regarding secondary recrystallization, however, often is that nuclei are certain primary recrystallization grains or primaries. The two theories differ, however, in specifying what the certain primaries are. In support of the oriented growth theory Beck and Hua originally stated "It may be assumed that in a re-crystallized material, even with a strong texture, there always are present some grains of practically any orientation. These may serve as nuclei for the coarse grains, provided that conditions are favorable for their growth." In commenting on this statement one would say that there are two restricting conditions: namely, that 1) the certain primaries (nuclei) are large enough to grow, and 2) their boundaries have high mobility. The work described was carried out during 1917 and 1918 at the testing laboratory of Watertown Arsenal at the instigation of the Nitrate Division and later with the concurrence of the Cannon Section of the Ordnance Department, U. 8. A. The experiments follow three principal lines of work: First, the effect of nitrogen under pressure on steel containers of various compositions at a red heat; second, the effect of decomposing ammonia on various alloy steels, iron, and non-ferrous alloys; third, a new theory of the erosion of guns in respect to the effect of nitrogen in steel. Part I In the Haber process for the manufacture of ammonia from its elcnlents, it is necessary to have nitrogen and hydrogen of 1500 lb. per sq. in. (105.5 kg. per sq. cm.) at a temperature of 500 to 600' C. The steel containers for these gases gave trouble by failing without apparent cause. When the General Chemical Co. began to develop its method for the production of ammonia, it experienced the same difficulty and, knowing that the Haber process had solved the difficulty by the use of alloy steels, it made several small steel bottles of different compositions and kept them filled with these gases at this pressure and temperature until they failed. The time of service varied from a few days, for the plain steel casting, to two years for a chrome-vanadium forging. Four of these steel bottles were sent to this laboratory for investigation; they were a plain carbon-steel forging, a nickel-stee1 forging, a chrome-vanadium steel forging, and a chrome-steel forging. The time of service was as follows: plain carbon steel, 4 mo.; nickel steel, 6 mo.; chrome-vanadium steel, over 2 yr.; chrome steel, 4 mo. When these containers were cut open and the cross-section surface polished, they showed an inside zone with a different luster from the rest of the metal. Upon etching, this zone was almost unaffected while the rest of the steel etched normally.

The purpose of this paper is to invite attention away from the obvious. direct monetary costs of oil-field overdevelopment (as distinguished from "social costs") to a consideration of the role played by the exercise of freedom to create even allegedly excessive1 plant facilities in contributing to the maintenance of equilibrium in the wholc economy and in promoting material progress. The obvious and most commonly discussed effect of overdevelopment of oil fields is illustrated by the allegation that already the excessive development of the East Texas field has cost upward of $162,000,000;2 in other words, the drilling of 12,500 wells more than the number estimated as the requirement for economical recovery of the reserve has unnecessarily raised the total cost of development that amount. Many other illustrations of so-called excessive development of oil pools could be presented. Some of them, like Cushing, Powell and Long Beach, might be drawn from the era antedating widespread discussion in the trade of such matters as optimum well spacing, reservoir energy, the conservation rate of depletion of reserves, etc. Numerous other cases can he found in the records of the current era, which began with the introduction of rationalized restriction of production. Besides East Texas, there may be mentioned Oklahoma City, Centralia and. more recently, the town-lot development of Bloomingdale, Michigan.

The densities of liquid tin, lead, and Sn-Pb alloys have been measured over a range of temperature above the liquidus. In all cases, data can be adequately represented by an equation of the type p = a + bT. For pure tin, the values of a and b are, respectively, 7.139 and 7.125 x 10-4, and for pure lead, 11.060 and 12.220 x 10-4. At constant temperature, molar volumes in the Sn-Pb system vary linearly with composition. DURING the course of a long-term program at the Department of Energy, Mines and Resources, Ottawa, Canada, the densities of liquid tin, lead, and Pb-Sn alloys were studied. The work reported herein draws on two sets of results independently achieved by Thresh, on the one hand, and by Crawley and White, on the other. EXPERIMENT The method and apparatus were originated by Thresh and have been described in detail in Mines Branch reports.172 In operation, the 14 cu cm graphite pycnometer is put in the furnace as shown in Fig. 1 after a machined charge has been placed inside the pycnometer and the lid screwed down. The dimensions of the charge are such that, upon melting, a small excess of liquid metal is discharged through the capillary hole to displace the weighted float above. IN a previous paper,1 a method was suggested for determining the depth to a bed in the simple case of a uniform overlying layer of constant thickness. The method of Tagg2 has also been used on the same data, thus furnishing a comparison of the e two methods, as well as a method of using the two methods jointly. The method of measuring the apparent resistivity is that suggested by Wenner,3 and illustrated in Fig. 1. A current I enters the earth at the positive pole C and leaves it at the negative pole D. The potential V of the high electrode A, with respect to the low electrode B is measured by suitable means. The separation of the collinear points in the order shown, DBAC, is 1, the same. for each interval.

The extremely valuable papers and discussions on coal-cluat explosions by Bache,' Eavenson, Shurick, Mannakee,* and Raymond are of unusual interest to me, since it has been my duty to carry on investigations on this and allied subjects for the Technologic Branch of the United States Geological Survey during the past year, and to make a series of coal-dust tests in the explosion-gallery at Pittsburg during a short periocl when its use could be diverted from the pressing work of testing explosives. In several of the discussions mentioned, it has been assumecl that the Technologic Branch of the Survey mas not paying attention to certain phases of the general problem, or to the specific question of temperature and humidity of mine-air in its effect upon the explosibility of coal-dust. This assumption is not correct, since from the time of the establishment of the " Mine-Accident Division," with its subdivisions of explosives, rescue-work, and mine-investigation, the mining engineer.; of the last-named section have made the subject one of chief consideration. Their general duties, including mine-sampling for governmeilt purposes, emergency-calls for rescue-work, and esplosion investigations, have prevented undivided attention, but all of them have been supplied with instruments for such determinations, and special report-forms have been in use and a great many observations made in mining-districts to which the mining engineers have gone. With the idea of obtaining a uniform system of reporting these data, and in the hope that the work may be of service to mining engineers in the field, the collecting blanks in use are shown in Forrns 1 and 2.

For the last five years the furnace-men drawing their oresupply from the Lake Superior districts have had to solve the problem of using the very fine Mesabi ores as part of their oremixture. It is not my purpope to dwell on the early experiences and the progressive development in the use of these ores up to this time, but to lay before the members of the Institute one prominent feature concerning them, namely, the frequent and sometimes very disastrous slips (?) or explosions (?) occurring at furnaces where these ores are used. The Transactions of the Institute contain very little on this subject. Mr. F. E. Bachman, in his discussion of Mr. 0. 0. Laudig's paper (Trans., xxvi., 1061), advances a theory as to the cause of these occurrences; but this is the only reference to the subject in the Transactions up to this time, so far as I can recall. Probably all the furnace-men running the harddriven coke-furnaces in the central West have had more or less experience with this trouble; and I believe the majority of

THE heavy media separation process plays an outstanding role in the concentration of 4000 tons of zinc ore per day at the Mascot mill of the American Zinc Co. of Tennessee. Of the total tonnage, 72 pct is treated in the heavy media separation plant to reject 56 pct of the ore as a coarse tailing, which has a ready market. Concentrates from this separation are beneficiated further by jigging and flotation. Approximately 25 pct of the total zinc concentrate production is made in the jig mill. Jig tailings are ground and pumped to the flotation circuit where the balance of the production is made. Fig. 1 shows a generalized flowsheet of the mill.

AS part of an investigation into the effect of hydrogen on the serrated yielding of Ni-Cu alloys,' it was necessary to determine the solubility of hydrogen in the alloys of interest. With the exception of the work by Fukusima and Mitui2 who investigated the solubility of hydrogen in solid Ni-Cu alloys at 20 wt pct intervals at 1050°, 700°, and 350°C, the information in the literature is limited.3-10 Alloys were prepared from deoxidized Analar Copper and Mond Nickel pellets.' Wire samples were hydrogenated at 7.8 atm in an autoclave consisting of 5 ft of thick-walled Inconel 600 tube with a resistance furnace around the middle portion. The top end, at room temperature, was fitted with a safety valve, a calibrated pressure gage, and a sample inlet, while the bottom end, again at room temperature, was filled with water. After reaching equilibrium samples were quenched by dropping from the high-temperature region of the autoclave into water. They were then quickly transferred to liquid nitrogen where they were stored until analyzed for hydrogen using an Exhalograph.11 The results, which are shown in Fig. 1, represent the mean of two separate determinations on each sample. Because of the lower level of hydrogen at the high copper end of the series, the results here are of poor precision using this method. Fortunately, the results of Himmler9 using the Sieverts technique are available for these copper-rich alloys (>80 at. pct Cu)
