Lead concentrates from Kuroko (black ore) mines, which contain 4-7% Cu, 55% Pb, 3-777, Zn, and 0.5-0.9% As, are pretreated by a hydrometallurgical process before electric furnace smelting with other lead resources from Kuroko. The hydrometallurgical pretreatment involves sulfuric acid leaching in the first stage and ferric leaching in the second stage. This paper describes the short history of lead recovery from Kuroko and the performance of laboratory tests and pilot plant and commercial operations.

Mine hoisting ropes can be loaded to capacity only when the strength of each component is exactly known. Characteristic curves provide this information. When load and rate of acceleration are specified for an individual rope, the characteristic curve assumes a predetermined shape. The factor of safety is the value derived by dividing the breaking strength of the rope by the total stress on the rope where it goes over the sheave wheel. Total stress is made up of the weight of skip and cage, weight of ore, weight of rope between sheave and rope clevise or attachment, friction load, and acceleration force. Bending stresses are neglected in this discussion, as sheaves and drum diameters are assumed to be large enough to reduce these stresses to a negligible value.

A two year study was made of the waste disposal of the pebble rock phosphate industry. Solid slimes are impounded in large settling areas and the process water is re-used. Clear effluent was not found to be toxic to fish or animal life in field tests or in controlled experiments.

IT is not necessary to enter into a long discussion of ordinary bells, because every master carpenter or blacksmith knows how to make those levers with a crossbar that are called storks. This is nothing other than a board that has a thick and heavy head and looks more like a dolphin than a bird. This has a long tail in the form of a handle so that it makes a more powerful lever. As can be seen in every bell tower and other place where there are bells, it has, crosswise above the point where the cannon of the bell is fitted and fastened in, an iron bar which is arched and which has its two ends turned horizontally. This article summarizes some of the results of the continuing research activity at the Henry Krumb Schools of Mines, Columbia University, directed towards a better understanding of the stochastic behavior of slurry flows in underground coal-slurry pipeline systems. Fundamental ideas supported by field observations are presented and a Semi-Markov model of the slurry flows is developed. As a result of this formulation, behavior of combined slurry flows from N independent coal faces can be expressed in analytical form. The contents of a slurry surge tank receiving slurry flows with certain stochastic characteristics is investigated in a function of discharge pump characteristics and time.

The relation between man-hours of labor and production may be correlated for any industry, and already it has been widely used in piecework studies. It is not in general use as yet for recording labor efficiency of an enterprise or an industry. An exception to this is the Cement Institute, which tabulates the man-hours used in each operation and thus gets the total man-hours per barrel of cement. The writer knows of one steel company that keeps a complete record of man-hours for every operation from mining the ore to finishing the product. No doubt many others find the information useful, and such a study could be of value to the mineral industries.

The chemistry involved in the recovery of gold and silver from natural resources through hydrometallurgical and pyrometallurgical processes is reviewed. Process metallurgy for the cyanidation, activated carbon adsorption, carbon stripping, and electrowinning of gold and silver is discussed. The application of zinc sodium sulfide use for silver recovery from cyanide solutions is covered. Electrooxidation, other oxidation methods and roasting processes for problem ores and concentrates containing organic carbon and impurities such as arsenic, antimony, and tellurides are summarized. The smelting of cathodes, precipitates, and other products, and the various wet and furnace steps in separating dore metal are also reviewed.

The experiences of exploration crews with mineral land acquisition could be graphed to show a correlation with the natural law that everything tends to become more so. A single step, such as that of taking a series of deep soil samples, is sometimes delayed until some sense can be made from floating unpatented claims which are obscure in orientation as well as position-placer claims, overlapping lode claims, location posts with empty Prince Albert cans and claims with no apparent assessment work for ten years. Add to this some patented claims without monuments, a state or federal withdrawal area which may or may not invalidate preexisting claims, a loosely defined tunnel site, and some ranchers who understandably resent the separation of surface rights from mineral rights.

The ElectroSlurry™ electrowinning concept has been incorporated into a process flowsheet for recovering copper from smelter flue dusts. The process has averaged 96% recovery of the copper as high-grade electrowon cathode, while at the same time removing a majority of the impurities that degrade drawn copper as a result of recycling flue dust and liberator cathodes. The dust is processed through several stages consisting of leaching, copper precipitation, ElectroSlurry electrowinning, and waste liquor treatment. The process may be integrated into a smelter operation and become an effective and feasible means of maintaining good product purity.

Scraper With over 40 pet more struck capacity than previous models, the new Caterpillar No. 90 scraper is designed to increase earthmoving production when used with D8 tractor power. This scraper moves dirt with the aid of a hard surfaced, reversible cutting edge. Material is carried in a flat, doublebottom bowl of high tensile steel. Operation is by means [ ] of a cable-control unit, which can be mounted on the rear of the tractor to provide for positive loading and ejection. Tapered roller bearings are installed at each axle. The scraper uses two 24.00 to 29 front tires and two 27.00 to 33 rear tires, all four of 24-ply rating. When loaded, the scraper distributes 60 pet of the weight on the rear tires. Circle No. 1

Chester Wells Purington was killed at Yokohama on Sept. 1, 1923, in the Japanese earthquake. Mr. Purington was born in Boston, Mass., Oct. 27, 1871. He prepared for his entrance to Harvard at the Boston Latin School and graduated from Harvard in the class of '93. He started out soon thereafter investigating gold deposits of the Appalachian system in the South and in 1895, made atrip to Alaska, investigating the gold deposits of that territory. The summer and fall of 1896 found him in the San Juan country of Colorado examining the gold and silver properties in the Telluride and Rico districts and in the La Plata Mountains. The study of rock mechanics is becoming more important each year and several groups are currently engaged in the study of rock mechanics instrumentation and techniques that can be used to determine rock properties in place. As it becomes necessary to mine lower grade ores, larger equipment and tonnages are required, which in turn call for larger openings underground. In addition, rock mechanics studies are necessary for designing large underground openings for defense and powerhouses, and highway and water tunnels. Meramec Mining Co. has a rock mechanics program in which they are trying to develop a means of detecting ground instability prior to failure. In one case advance warning resulted in valuable lead time for back filling stopes before pillar failure had progressed to a dangerous extent.1

Studies on hand-picked samples of chrysocolla from Arizona showed that heating in an inert atmosphere enhances greatly copper extraction by ammoniacal-ammonium carbonate solutions. Heating in hydrogen improves the extraction of copper even further and maximum extraction by ammoniacal-ammonium carbonate and by sodium cyanide solutions is achieved for samples heated at 350°C. Heating in SO2 atmosphere results in the simultaneous formation of CuSO4 and Cu2O; maximum reaction rate is also achieved at 350°C. At temperatures higher than 350°C, CuCO4 starts to decompose. Chrysocolla heated above 600°C either in argon, H2, or SO2, is rendered less amenable to leaching, supposedly due to the formation of insoluble copper silicates.

Although the main constituents of Portland cement are the oxides of calcium, silicon, aluminum, and iron, characteristics of the cement are seriously affected by such contaminants in the raw materials as magnesium, phosphorus, sodium, potassium, sulfur, and others of lesser importance. Sources of cement raw materials comprise a long list of minerals occurring in nature in various degrees of purity. The calcareous raw materials are generally limestone of purity varying from calcite to cement rock (a low-grade limestone of natural, almost correct chemical composition), chalk, marl, seashells, coral, and coral sand. The argillaceous raw materials supplying silicon, aluminum, and iron are mainly various forms of clay and shale, to which may be added silicious sand, iron ore, bauxite, or kaolin for minor adjustment of the chemical composition.

Large capacity flotation cells with volumes ranging in size from 300 to 2000 cu ft are used in the Opemiska concentrator, Opemiska Copper Mines (Quebec), Canada. This paper gives a description of the flowsheet with metallurgical comparisons using Maxwell vs. conventional cells, total power consumption used, and estimated maintenance costs.
