The Pierrefitte mines, situated in the South of France, in the district of the Hautes-Pyrenees, owe their name to the fact that the first mining operations of any extent, and of comparatively reccnt date, were carried out in the neighborhood of the village of Pierrefitte, which is a branch terminus of the Midi railway. The Pierrefitte mines, however, embrace a wide extent of country and several different concessions, on most of which comparatively little exploration-work has been done. The portion of the property presently to be described is a zone running roughly E—W., over a distance of about 5 miles from the valley of Cauterets to the valley of Estaing, the ridge dividing these valleys being a spur of the main chain of the Pyrenees, and running more or less at right angles to it. According to local tradition, which various indications tend to confirm, these mines are of ancient date, the first workings being attributed to the Romans, who are supposcd to have sought not only the lead but also the silver which is contained in the ore. Old slags have been found in the neighborhood which might well have been produced from the cupellation of lead-ores. These old workings, while of considerable extent at times, do not seem to have extended beyond a depth of 100 ft., even this depth being somewhat exceptional. The old notarial records of the district show that mines were known to exist, and that they were even worked, in the sixteenth century, but since the mines were abandoned (by the Romans or others) considerably prior to this period, very little

In a previous paper one of the authors observed that the rate of cooling from the anneal prior to testing greatly influenced the life of copper under sustained load at 200°C. Furnace-cooled bars of oxygen-free copper (with and without silver) had a life four to twenty-five times that of the water-quenched specimens. The addition of 0.054 per cent silver to the oxygen-free copper increased the life at a stress of 20,000 lb. per sq. in. from about 2 hr. to 50 hr. Fractures in these bars were intercrystalline. An explanation was advanced to account for the profound influence of cooling rate on the rupture properties at 200°C. The suggestion offered was that at the high annealing temperature the minor constituents are distributed at random. By water quenching, this condition is maintained at room temperature, whereas furnace cooling permits some segregation at the grain boundaries. The higher concentration of the minor constituents in the grain boundaries results in a. strengthening, so that a longer life at a given stress and .temperature results. Small amounts of cadmium or manganese have also been found to increase the life of copper at 200°C., and to a much greater extent than silver.2 The increase in the long-time strength of copper resulting from small additions of cadmium or silver appears to be related, indirectly at least, to the higher softening temperatures of such alloys. The elements, such as silver or cadmium, which greatly increase the rupture life of copper also cause large increases in the softening temperature. As little as 0.05 per cent of cadmium or silver is sufficient to raise the softening temperature more than 100°.3,4 The effects of cooling rate and of minor constituents on the rupture properties are of considerable fundamental as well as practical interest; therefore a more detailed study of their nature was conducted and is reported in this paper. Experimental Procedure Materials The materials studied in this investigation may conveniently be classified in two groups: one consisting of a wide variety of commercial coppers, and the other composed of special high-purity, laboratory-prepared coppers. The commercial materials were tested to determine whether or not the effect of cooling rate occurred with all coppers, whereas the high-purity coppers were investigated in order to establish a basis for evaluating the effect of minor constituents on the rupture properties. In Table I are given the analyses of the coppers tested. The samples I to 6 are commercial materials and were obtained for the most part from stock supplies.*

RECENTLY, an investigation of the absorption of sulfur dioxide gas in molten binary copper alloys was conducted. A Sieverts-type apparatus, consisting of a mercury-filled gas dispensing buret and a mercury manometer, was used initially for determining the volume of gas absorbed as a function of pressure. The equilibration behavior of the alloys studied indicated that the mercury in the gas measuring system was absorbing sulfur dioxide. Owing to the widespread use of mercury as a displacement medium in absorption studies, an investigation was made to determine the nature and magnitude of the mercury - sulfur dioxide absorption effect. The gas measuring system was modified by substituting a Worden Quartz Products Type PDHV fused-quartz-spiral pressure gage for the mercury-filled dispenser and manometer. The dispensed gas volume at known temperature and atmospheric pressure was measured by evacuating a Pyrex vessel of known volume and by admitting sulfur dioxide into the vessel until the attached quartz pressure gage registered atmospheric pressure. Atmospheric pressure was measured concurrently with a separate mercury barometer. The volume of the empty sample chamber and its attendant apparatus was determined by measuring the equilibrium pressure accompanying the addition of a measured volume of sulfur dioxide into the initially evacuated system. The volume of the mercury sample was calculated from the density of mercury at the temperature of the study (25°C). Measured volumes of sulfur dioxide were then dispensed into the system and the equilibrium pressure accompanying each gas addition was determined. From the difference between the system volume and the mercury volume, the number of moles of gaseous sulfur dioxide remaining in the system at each pressure was calculated. The difference between the number of moles of gas dispensed into the system, denoted Enso2: and the number of moles of gas remaining in the system after absorption equilibrium had been attained, denoted nso2(g), was equal to the number of moles of absorbed gas, denoted nSO2. The number of moles of absorbed gas was then converted to absorbed volume, denoted VSo2, in cu cm at stp conditions of (PC and 760 mm Hg. Table I contains calculated values of Snso2, nSo2(g), and VSo2 for different sulfur dioxide pressures. In the original system, denoted Run I, volume limitations of the gas dispensing system prevented absorption studies at equilibrium pressures near atmospheric pressure, so a different gas dispensing system, denoted Run 11, was used for determining the last pressure reading in Table I. The data in Table I are expressed in terms of the absorption of sulfur dioxide in 49.68 cu cm of mercury. In Fig. 1, these data are expressed in terms of the absorption of sulfur dioxide in 100 cu cm of mercury. Since the absorption data plotted in Fig. 1 show a linear relationship, the volume of sulfur dioxide absorbed in mercury is a function of the first power of pressure. Numerous articles have been written about the coal miner ; he has been compared with brave men who have gone out to conquer some unknown hazard throughout the ages. Now, however, modern mining is no longer something to be avoided, but a vocation that anyone can be proud of, with remuneration equal to or above that of almost any industry. A concerted effort is being made each day by both the operators of most mines as well as the state and federal inspectors to see that coal mines are as safe or safer than work places in any other industry. However, it is true that mine fires and explosions have occurred in the mining industry since its inception. One of the earliest accurate references to such an occurrence is found in the transactions of the Royal Society of London. In the Colliery Managers' Handbook, 1898, Caleb Pamely writes of an explosion that occurred at Fatfield, England in August 1708, resulting in the deaths of 69 persons. He states: "Three of them, viz, two men and a woman, were blown quite up from the bottom of the shaft, fifty-seven fathoms deep, into the air, to a considerable distance from the mouth of the pit." It is interesting to note that women were employed as miners in England during that period. In the United States, the first record of coal mined was in 1702 by the Jamestown colonists. In 1786, about 20 years after Pittsburgh, PA was first settled, a charter was granted by William Penn to mine coal on the banks of the Monongahela River. Then in 1803, the first important coal company, the Lehigh Coal Co., was established. From this beginning, the mining industry continued to grow in importance and the first state mining law was formulated in 1870. The Pennsylvania state mining law was followed in 1873 by Ohio's, and in 1876 by Maryland's. A mine explosion at Avondale, PA in 1869 stimulated state legislatures to formulate these early laws. DuriNg April, Max, and June, 1910, I was in charge of an examination of the greater part of the Moa iron-ore area in Oriente Province, Cuba, on the north coast, near the east end of the island. My instructions, on arrival at the properties, were to check former estimates of tonnages and grades, and to re-examine the ore comprised in claims covering 44,727 acres. This work included the running of lines dividing the properties into co-ordinate planes, the boring of many thousand feet of holes spaced at the intersections of these co-ordinates, the taking of samples of the ore penetrated, the analysis of these samples for their various constituent minerals, and the determination of the results as to tonnages, depths, and grades, both for individual properties and for the entire group. Each section of every one of the thousand holes drilled was to be compensated for depth and grade with every other, a series of simple arithmetical calculations of no slight magnitude, the mere mechanical labor of which consumed much time, but finally resulted in giving a complete average of all the essential facts for the entire area of 18,000 hectares, Had it not been for the more than willing, active, and able co-operation of the officers of the Spanish-American Iron Co., from Charles F. Rand, President, and Jennings S. Cox, General .Manager, down to the most humble water-carrier, the work would have consumed far more time than it did. The lands thus systematically explored by me were comprised in the following denouncements: Punta Gorda, Yaminiguey, Baracoa secunda, Sagua, Moa, Yajrumaje, Lirio, and Cabanas, all of which were massed as the Moa group, so called, and cover an area of 13,832 hectares, or 34,179 acres. Using a combined decoration and etching technique the dislocation structure of annealed and deformed a brass has been studied. Annealed crystals revealed a low density forest and well-developed subboundaries; lightly deformed crystals contained discrete groups of dislocations. The dislocation density and the number of dislocations in a group were obtained from the micrographs. Using slip-line data, the mean path of a dislocation and the configuration of groups along an active slip plane have been deduced. Observations on secondary and cross-slip are reported. It has been the aim of many investigations to obtain detailed knowledge of the dislocation patterns which are present in metals before and after their deformation. The "decoration" of dislocations with impurity atoms has been considered as one of the promising experimental approaches, and much work has been done to develop this technique for revealing dislocation sites in metals. Following the early work by Castaing,' Castaing and Guinier,' and Lacombe and Berghezan~ on aluminum-rich aluminum-copper alloys, dislocations in this material have been studied extensively by others.+' In these alloys the dislocation sites act as nuclei for the precipitation of the second phase. The main results of the investigations on aluminum with copper are: i) the confirmation of the earlier contention that subboundaries consist of dislocation walls, ii) that many more dislocations are found in slip bands than in regions where less glide had taken place, iii) the observation of individual dislocations, lying nearly parallel to the surface investigated, and iv) that parts of dislocation loops, apparently emitted from a dislocation source, could be made visible. Recently, Jacquet, Weill, and Calvert have succeeded in revealing nearly concentric dislocation loops in quenched A1-4 pct Cu and thus indicated directly the existence of dislocation sources in a fcc metal specimen of normal dimensions. Another decoration method developed by Dash10'11 and applied to silicon crystals makes use of diffusing copper to the dislocations from a surface deposition. The dislocation pattern can then be observed by an infrared technique. His results include evidence for symmetrical and spiral Frank-Read sources, and for arrays of dislocation loops which follow simple crys-tallographic directions. THE native copper of Lake Superior occurs in the form of fine grains and scales, disseminated in small percentage through the copper-bearing rock ; and in large and small masses, from a few pounds to several hundred tons in weight. Formerly the bulk of the copper came from the mines of Ontonagon and Keweenaw counties, producing mass copper. At present these mines furnish less than one-tenth of the total product, and fully one-half of this is from a single mine. The masses are usually found irregularly distributed in nearly vertical fissure veins, and require much dead work in sinking, drifting, and stoping for their development. The risk and expense attending the working of these mines have made them, with few exceptions, anything but profitable. * Read at the Montreal meeting, September, 1880.

With the expansion of copper leaching of the various mine wastes at the Kennecott properties, additional copper recovery facilities have been required. A research and development program has been pursued to determine a suitable economic approach to the processing of the additional leach solutions contemplated. lnvestigations on laboratory and pilot plant scales covered electrowinning, solvent extraction, launder and vat type cells, activated launders, precipitation drums, and precipitation cones. This paper contains information on the development and use of a new precipitation-cone-type copper recovery plant, which provides many advantages over older systems. The application of research findings to the old art of leaching copper from copper-bearing mine waste has resulted in a significant contribution of copper to over-all copper production. For example, at the completion of the current expansion program at the Kennecott properties in the United States, copper produced from waste dump leaching will amount to about 25% of the total production. Formerly only 2% was derived from this source. This planned expansion of copper leaching focused attention on the problem of developing more efficient methods for the recovery of copper from greatly increased volumes of copper-bearing solutions.1 The detailed investigations which have been made in laboratory pilot plant and plant tests for the recovery of copper from copper-bearing solutions have included electrowinning, solvent extraction, ion exchange and cementation with iron in launders, precipitation drums, activated launders, and precipitation cones. The results of these investigations have led to the development of a new precipitation cone-type copper recovery system providing many advantages over older methods. ELECTROWINNING OF COPPER FROM COPPER-BEARING SOLUTIONS The direct electrowinning of copper from relatively dilute solutions of copper-bearing mine water, namely solutions containing 10 to 20 lbs of copper per 1000 gal, has always been an attractive possibility.2,3 By this method, high-purity copper powder can be recovered with a power consumption of 3.5 kwh per Ib of copper. The use of compressed air or gas in oil wells for raising crude oil to the surface has, within the last year, become a dominant factor In production engineering. Previous application of this principle was largely confined to oil wells that had been pumping for a considerable length of time. In the Seminole area, the gas-air lift has been applied to wells imniediately after natural flow has ceased and in some cases while the wells were still flowing. This early application of the gas-air lift has been watchcd with intense interest by the petroleum industry, both with respect to methods of application and mechanical installations and to the effects on immediate and ultimate production. Methods of Application The Seminole pool at its inception contained sufficient gas associated with the oil to cause natural flow. As no frce gas was found in the main productive horizon, the Wilcox sand, all the gas present was dissolved in the oil, hence the natural flowing life was short, rarely lasting over 45 days. When natural flow ceased, high fluid levels were common, and as depth and crookedness of holes were obstacles to efficient pumping, the gas-air lift was used almost exclusively in raising the oil to the surface. Because of the high gravity of the oil, 41" A. P. I., and its high gasoline content, and also because of the desire to obtain production before offset wells became productive, quantity of production was the aim of the operators and a method of flow was used whereby this aim could be fulfilled. One of the outstanding features of this method consisted in flowing the wells through the annular space between the tubing and rasing. By this means a greater quantity of fluid could be handled than by flowing through the tubing of the size in ordinary use. Wells that would produce only a few hundred barrels on the pump were by this rnethod made to produce as high as 7000 bbl. on the lift. A few days or wreks of production at that rate meant a large recovery of oil. Casing of 636 in. diameter was commonly used as a production string with a 5 3/16-in. liner set on top of the oil sand. THE 650-ton underground mill of The Empire Zinc Company of Colorado (a subsidiary of The New Jersey Zinc Co.) serves the Eagle mine at Gilman in the Battle Mountain mining district of Colorado. The topography is rough, the mine and mill being under Battle Mountain and the alit entrance in the north wall of the canyon of the Eagle River, which is here a steel) gorge. The town of Gilman stands on a shoulder of the mountain at altitude 8975 ft., above sea level, along the Pike's Peak ocean to ocean highway and contains the company office and the usual facilities of a modern mining town. The railway contact is at Belden, altitude 8370 ft., at the bottom of the gorge directly below Gilman, where the westbound track of the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad is cut along the north bank and the eastbound track along the south bank of the river. A general description of the mine, mill and service facilities, with an account of the geology, character of the ore and methods of mining and milling having previously been published in a series of articles1, this paper will discuss with as little repetition as practicable the reasons for building the mill underground rather than as a conventional structure, the methods of construction employed and the experiences gained in what is apparently the pioneer plant of this type and extent.

The 1943 designation of districts for the Transactions† has caused some confusion because of the elimination of the West Central Texas district and the allocation of the counties of this district to the North Texas district and the North Central Texas district. The North Central Texas district as herein defined includes the counties of Brown, Callahan, Cole-man, Comanche, Coryell, Eastland, Erath, Fisher, Hamilton, Hood, Jones, Lampasas, Mills, Nolan, Palo Pinto, Parker, San Saba, Shackelford, Stephens, Stonewall, Summerville, Taylor, Throckmorton and Wise. These counties as listed are the counties of District 7B, State Railroad Commission. This district covers the south central crest and the west flank of the Bend flexure north of the Llano uplift. The west flank of the Bend flexure is on the east boundary of the Permian Basin of West Texas. The North Texas district, District No. 9, State Railroad Commission, includes the counties of Archer, Clay, Cooke, Foard, Hardeman, Jack, Knox, Montague, Wichita, Wilbarger and Young. The area of this district covers the crest and south flank of the Red River uplift and the north central crest of the Bend flexure. The greater part of the oil and gas produced in the past from the North Central Texas district has been from Pennsyl-vanian strata. Some oil and gas has been produced from the lower Permian (by the latest selection of the Pennsylvanian-Permian boundary') and minor amounts from the Mississippian and Ordovician sediments. Increasingly important quantities of oil and gas are to be expected from the older sediments by deeper development in proven fields and by new discoveries. Most of the oil and gas in the district has accumulated in localized, well-defined structural traps in limestone and sandstone reservoirs and in traps due to stratigraphic changes in sedimentation, mainly porosity traps in limestone and sandstone lenses, both usually associated with some structural feature. The Stripper Well Premium Plan as adopted by the office of the Federal Price Administrator has been an aid to the producers of stripper wells. The producers are pleased to receive the subsidy to prolong the plugging of wells, but they are not too pleased with the subsidy plan in principle. Most independent operators are in favor of, and think they are entitled to, an increase in the market price for oil. The price is not adequate to meet the requirements of the average independent operator with the continued advance in production, development and wildcatting costs. Old and new pipe lines for oil and gas leading out of the state are removing reserves at an alarming rate. Curves showing the rate of discovery versus production and pipe-line deliveries in and out of the state make a cross that sooner or later will be fatal to the state. Wildcatting not only needs a price increase but every other available incentive and encouragement.

THERE are two general approaches to the problem of increasing profits from an operation. One is to lower expense; the other is to raise income. Mechanical preparation of coal may be used for either purpose but a prudent consideration of many details must precede any decision lest the results be negative instead of positive. It is quite possible that any net gain will result from a combination of the two. Since mechanically prepared coal invariably is a better product qualitatively than a hand-picked coal from the same mine, it is a reason- able expectation that the customer will be willing to increase the producer's income by paying a higher price. Or there may be the possibility that a combination of mechanical mining plus mechanical cleaning will give a lower over-all production cost for the coal in the railroad car. More likely, there will be found a combination of these two factors. From the customer's point of view, the competitive delivered cost per B.t.u. considered in relation to such incidental factors as dust nuisance, handling properties, ash disposal, and ash fusibility determines what he will pay. In a bulk tonnage product such as coal, freight is a very considerable part of the delivered fuel cost, and obviously freight paid on incombustible ash has no economic attractions. INCENTIVE FOR CLEANING Coal is prepared in four major ways: 1 (I) by screening or sizing, (a) by mixing or blending, (3) by cleaning, including hand picking and mechanical cleaning, (4) by dustless treatment. By a combination of any or all of these methods, coal can be prepared to standard specifications. It is easily possible to have good cleaning and still get a poor final product because of faulty screening or mixing,

The: mysterious Lake Erie price for iron ore, established each spring, determines the maximum price that will be paid during the following season for ore of Mesabi Non-Bessemer base grade. This price is important to the ore producers, hut since most of the ore in the Lake Superior district is owned or controlled by consuming interests, the really important question to them is not the price of ore but how much it will cost them to mine and transport their season's requirements to their furnace plants. However, a few million tons are actually sold each year, and considerable quantities are traded for mixing purposes, and the negotiations lor these sales and trades usually begin with some reference to the Lake Erie price. There is no difficulty with the Lake Erie price itself or with the manner in which it is established, but the system prescribed for determining the values of ores that are not exactly base grade is incomplete. The Lake Erie price takes into consideration only the iron and phosphorus contained in the ore, but when the ore producer is negotiating a sale or trade, he is confronted by the fact that his ore must he studied and the price adjusted, not only on the basis of the iron and phosphorus analyses, as specified by the Lake Erie price, but also on the basis of silica! alumina, manganese, structure, etc. The vague and unsatisfactory methods used in making these adjustments bear some relation to the manner in which the ore is supposed to act in the blast furnace. The ore producer may not understand all of the idiosyncrasies of the blast furnace, but if the smelting-plant operators have a system more accurate than the Lake Erie price method for determining the relative values of different ores, why not pass this information on to the ore producers, so that they can make use of it and perhaps modify their practice in such a manner as to benefit both themselves and their customers? There is a lack of understanding and appreciation between these two groups that may, to some extent, be unavoidable, but in the interests of efficiency and conservation rules that are more accurate and complete than the Lake Erie price method in use at the present time should be established for the guidance of the ore producers. Recently a paper was read before the Eastern States Blast Furnace and Coke Oven Association, by Mr. G. W. Hewitt, Manager Production, Blast Furnace and Coke Oven Department, Wheeling Steel Corporation, in which he explained how his company determines the relative values of different grades of Non-Bessemer ore. This is a very important paper, perhaps not so much on account of the actual calculation methods described as because of the fact that premiums and penalties are shown on Non-Bessemer ores for silica, alumina, phosphorus, and manganese. Draglines 8.2-1 Introduction. The nature and characteristics of rock and rock derivatives forming the crust of the earth vary so greatly from place to place that it is impossible to use the same numerical factors to show the, productive ability of excavating equipment on different jobs or projects. Factors for each project must be developed individually and applied as the conditions and requirements dictate. TYPES' OF DRAGLINES. Types of draglines are differentiated by the propelling method used and are generally divided into four classes, as follows: 1. Wagon mounted 3. Crawler mounted 2. Truck mounted 4. Walking Figure 8.2-1 shows a truck-mounted dragline. This type is considered to be the most mobile unit. In order to increase stability over the side, outriggers are installed as part of the truck chassis. This feature is not shown in .this figure. Figure 8.2-2 shows a crawler-mounted dragline. The long, wide crawlers are used to increase the stability and reduce the bearing pressure of this unit. These features allow for use of these units on surfaces too soft for the wagon- or truck-mounted types. Figure 8.2-3 shows a walking-type dragline. The large diameter tub and the well-supported boom through the gantry gives high stability for rugged works over a long life. BASIC PARTS OF A DRAGLINE. The basic parts of a dragline are illustrated in Fig. 8.2-4. A deck layout is shown in Fig. 8.2-5 with the main components named. OPERATION OF A DRAGLINE. THROUGHOUT northeastern Texas we have an extensive series of iron-ore deposits, occupying portions of nineteen counties and having approximately an actual ore-covered area of 1000 square miles. The existence of these ores has long been known. Kennedy* says: "Iron-ore is distributed in profusion throughout Texas, being found almost everywhere except in the level region of the coast." Before this, C. Newell† had mentioned the existence of these ores thus: " Iron is found in abundance in the eastern, northern and middle portions of Texas;" and in 1849 Edward Smith‡ said: " We met with immense hills of iron which were said to be, and appeared to be, of excellent quality, in Cass and Titus counties.. . .. It is well known that Texas abounds with iron of first-rate quality." In 1859, Dr. Shumard? reports that detailed surveys had been made in several counties, and says: " Our labors have demonstrated the important fact that we have a vast iron-region in the eastern part of the state, embracing considerable areas in Cass, Harrison, Rusk, Panola, Smith, San Augustine and Shelby counties. GRAIN boundary stress relaxation has been the subject of several investigations in recent years, but as yet the phenomenon is not well understood. One of the major difficulties has been the lack of a sufficient amount of data with which to evaluate any proposed mechanism. Little information is available on the effect of small amounts of substitutional solutes on grain boundary stress relaxation. It is with this important phase of the problem that this investigation is concerned. The influence of substitutional solutes on grain boundary stress relaxation has been recently investigated in copper by Pearson: and in aluminum by Dorn et al.' Pearson studied the effect of zinc, gallium, germanium, and arsenic on the relaxation peak of OFHC copper.* The pure OFHC copper decreased the peak intensity and a second peak appeared at a higher temperature. This latter peak was termed the alloy grain boundary peak. At the lowest binary concentration studied, approximately 1 atomic pct, the primary peak was almost completely obliterated. Pearson found that the activation energy calculated from the alloy grain boundary peak for all solutes, irrespective of the concentration, was 44,000 cal per mol. Pearson concluded that the increase in activation energy from 33 to 44 kcal per mol is not continuous but abruptly changes from the lower to the higher value. As no attempt was made to investigate the intermediate range of concentration and hence calculate the possible variation of the activation energy for the initial grain boundary peak, this conclusion is hardly valid. In contrast to these results, Dorn et al. studied the effect of zinc, silver, copper, germanium, and magnesium on the grain boundary stress relaxation of aluminum. No change in the energy of activation was observed for binary alloys of the flrst four solutes, but a linear increase was found for increasing concentration of magnesium. Saturation was not found up to the maximum of 1.6 atomic pct. The energies of activation were obtained by plotting the horizontal displacement of the dynamic modulus curve vs temperature for two vibrational frequencies. As the modulus is proportional to the square of the frequency, this requires the measurement of the torsional frequency over a range of temperature. However, the technique does not lead to an unambiguous interpretation of the grain boundary

IN considering so complex a process as the smelting of iron in the blast furnace, there is obviously no single method of calculating efficiency that gives a complete appraisal of the performance of the furnace in all its several functions; such a comprehensive view as is required to evaluate producing ability and manufacturing costs for a given furnace is obtained only by considering a group of efficiencies, each of which measures the performance of the furnace from a specific point of view. For instance, there is the rate of consumption of coke per ton of iron produced, which is probably the most frequently considered, and is certainly one of the most important of the group; there is the efficiency of recovery of iron charged; and there is the efficiency of utilization of energy, both chemical and thermal, in some respects related to the former two yet in other ways independent of either. In each of these cases, the calculation can be made on the basis of the actual input of material or energy, or it may be based . upon a comparison with the minimum amount of material or energy that would be required by a "perfect" furnace; that is, an imaginary ideal furnace analogous to the perfect steam engine used in thermodynamic calculations, when this furnace is operating under optimum conditions. Moreover, the furnace itself can be considered either as an apparatus for smelting iron or, taking a somewhat less common point of view, as a gas producer yielding iron and slag as by-products. Some of these effi-ciencies are more useful than others, yet all are instructive; for a knowl-edge of them not only leads to good engineering practice from the standpoint of control but also discloses limits to possible improvement in performance and indicates the lines along which improvement is most likely to be profitable. Estimates of some of these efficiencies have appeared from time to time in the literature, but many of them are open to objection because they are based on data of uncertain accuracy or because they have been calculated without due regard to the thermo-dynamic principles involved. Moreover, so far as the author is aware, no general survey of the blast furnace comparing its performance in all the aspects mentioned has been made.

THE Lepanto Consolidated Mining Company is the largest copper producer in the Philippines, and the only one that makes a concentrate valuable principally for its copper; also, it has the only productive copper mine situated at considerable distance from the sea, and is the only one in the islands operating its own smelter. The Lepanto mine is in the Municipal District of Mankayan, sub-province of Benguet, near the heart of the Mountain Province of Northern Luzon. It is 165 km. from its shipping point at San Fernando, Province of La Union, on the shore of the China Sea. Elevations at the property range from 3200 to 4500 ft. The climate is very mild; temperatures are seldom below 50° or above 80°F. Annual rainfall approaches 170 in. and is mainly confined to a rainy season lasting from May to October. The months from December to April, inclusive, are usually extremely dry. This climatic pecularity entails the problems of landslides on the roads during the rainy season and water shortage during the dry season. The Mountain Trail, an improved rocksurfaced toll road maintained by the Commonwealth Government, gives access to the property. The 105 km. over this road may be traveled in about 4 ½ hr. during the dry season. Very few sections of the road are straight for more than 100 meters, and about one third of it is a one-way road controlled by gates. All freight for the property is delivered by the Manila Railroad Company to Bauang, La Union, 45 km. west of Baguio and at sea level, where it is picked up by freight trucks and hauled via Baguio to Lepanto. Granulated matte is hauled in bulk from Lepanto in four-ton lots on freight trucks to the storage bins at San Fernando. Freight rates from Bauang to the property amount to [P]8.oo per ton, and from the property to San Fernando the rate is [P]16.00 per ton. The company pays the road toll, [P] 1.00 per truck, each way. THE CAMP The company maintains a modern camp, well separated from the mine and reduction plant. Comfortable and sanitary living quarters, water, and light, as well as free medical service are provided all employees. A hospital staffed by a doctor and two nurses takes care of all medical treatment. Considering recreational facilities of great importance, the company has provided two tennis courts, two basketball courts, and badminton courts for employees. Bowling alleys and a motion picture theater are operated by the company, the profits being expended for other recreational purposes.
