The application of geostatistics to coal reserve analysis is discussed. One problem in particular, the selection of the optimum locations for exploratory drill holes, is considered in detail. A new interactive program to help the geologist determine the best locations is described and applied to a specific property. The steps in the process are described and then illustrated using a mine's actual data. First, a variogram is selected based on graphical displayed information from the known sample data. Kriging estimates are made for the region of interest and the blocks within the region. The location of future exploratory drill holes is selected based on the criterion of minimizing the region estimation variance for a given number of exploratory holes. The least number of exploratory holes required to meet a specified upper limit on the regional variance is also determined. The computer generated recommendations for the exploratory drill holes are compared to a manually prepared drilling plan. The post- drilling analysis of the results is compared to the predicted values.

Twenty years ago, the standard voltage for stripping machines was 4160 v and few people even thought of using a higher voltage. It was adequate for the machines of the day, which seldom exceeded 2500 hp, and higher voltages were considered to be too expensive and even dangerous. Then, in 1956, a 4500-hp machine was placed in operation and it was determined, with some reluctance, that it should operate on 7200 v. The next step, to 14,400 v, was taken in 1964 and the latest, but perhaps not final, step was made in 1967, when voltage was increased to 25,000 v. Today, 4160 v is considered almost obsolete and 7200 v is generally considered standard. However, a few mines are using 14,400 v and some eight machines soon will be operating on 25 KV, indicating that the technical and safety problems have been solved and that there must be some merit to the higher voltages. Thus, it is logical to question, "How do I determine the best voltage for my operation?"

One of the world's most respected scientists, Dr. Hans A. Bethe (see box) has concluded that if anything can solve the energy crisis, it will be coal and uranium. "It is an illusion to think that we can solve our problem by energy conservation alone. For the next few years, conservation must play a very important role, but at the same time, we must see and develop all our alternative energy sources," he said. In his series of five lectures on the energy crisis, given at the University of Utah while he was visiting professor there during February 1974, Dr. Bethe examined all the existing and newly proposed energy sources. He very quickly ruled out solar power, wind power, and tidal power. Solar power, he said, would be 3% to 4 times more expensive than nuclear energy and would only make sense in tropical areas; wind power, which could at best produce one-tenth as much energy as solar, is "for the birds;" and tidal power, which can be exploited in only a very few coastal locations, is "for the fish."

Open pit blasting can be a low cost routine or a high cost bottleneck depending on geology, environment and the operator's ability to master site conditions. Because blasting is a repetitive operation, there should be ample opportunity to optimize the process; but ordinarily this optimization is rarely achieved and then only if conditions remain consistent and predictable. Often, however, and particularly with porphyry coppers, hidden differences in rock characteristics nullify the operator's best efforts. At a porphyry copper deposit being mined by Kennecott Copper Corporation, all of the following rock types occur; oxidized and fresh porphyry, altered and silicified limestone, explosion breccia, rhyolite, sandstone, shale and several others. The units can cover large areas or be limited to a few tens of feet in maximum dimension. They are rarely visible on the bench surface and often do not show up in the bench slope. Even though the blastability of these rocks varies substantially, a generally-uniform blasting pattern was formerly used with disappointing results. Secondary blasting was often required and high bottoms occurred frequently, overblasting wasted drilling time, and explosives caused excessive throw.

During many years of service in the iron and steel industry I have frequently found, as have also many other engineers, that the common devices used for feeding coal into gas-producers are not what they ought to be in order to secure the best economy. The hopper-and-cone so generally used is familiar to all, and a brief study of its action will surely satisfy everybody that this device has several serious faults. In the first place, the charging is intermittent, and depends entirely upon an attendant. When the hopper is frequently emptied, it may work fairly well, but even then it suddeinly discharges into the hot producers a large body of coal, which is often violently converted into gas that rushes into the furnace, and, as the damper for the combustion-air cannot be regulated every time the producer is charged, there will be an excess of gas, which goes up the chimney unburned. Between the chargings the quantity of gas generated decreases, and there will often be an excess of air in the furnace,

The amenability of a given vanadium ore to any given treatment depends largely on the mineralogic combinations of vanadium in the ore. Quantitative data on vanadium mineralogy provide not only an objective basis for selection of proper treatment, but also may eliminate many time-consuming amenability studies whose results are empirical, at best. Vanadium is distributed through the interstices of mineralized sandstone ores in the form of oxidized vanadates, reduced oxides, and silicates. Oxidized vanadates, e.g., carnotite, tyuyamunite, etc., are most readily beneficiated by simple acid leaching. Reduced oxides are more slowly solubilized, but relatively amenable to most acid treatments. The layered silicates, roscoelite, mixed layered mica-montmorillonite, and chlorite, are least amenable to most acid extractions, and constitute an assemblage of vanadium- bearing clays that are common to many sedimentary deposits. Vanadium is combined principally as layered silicates in the clay fractions of many sandstone ores. Mineralogic studies in this paper are largely confined to clay minerals, and to their amenability characteristics in low pH liquors.

Plant sites for the light metal industry must be located where ample low cost power is available. In the first half of the century hydroelectric development was the only source of this power-now the best sites have been exploited and those remaining do not promise enough water to permit year-round capacity power plant operation. In searching for economic plant sites engineers have concentrated on locations with vast water power potential. Olin Mathieson Chemical Corp. has been studying the economics of developing water power to make aluminum. However natural gas, lignite, and even atomic energy have also been considered as possible power sources for aluminum production. Economic studies have given consideration not merely to investment and production costs, but to total costs of delivering fabricated products to the market center of the U. S. When delivered costs are considered and when full account is taken of the newest techniques of mining bituminous coal and utilizing it to make electric power, one arrives at the inescapable conclusion that coal has emerged as the economic answer to American aluminum production.

THE environmental conditions under which coals are deposited are revealed by the stratigraphy of the coal basins and coal beds and by the details of the structure and the physical constitution of the coals themselves. THE LAND SURFACE Generally Low Relief or Base Level In the Paleozoic coal fields, which have longest been worked, are most important, and are best known, we find relations, in general, as follows A post-Mississippian uplift with, in most cases, very moderate deformation, followed by erosion by which the uplifted regions, especially the bolder of the new topography, were largely worn down, while the older and less deformed regions were more or less extensively base leveled. Base leveling of most of the region continued as the deposition of coal measures proceeded. Consequently, in most coal fields the Pennsylvanian, or upper Carboniferous, lies unconformably on the Mississippian or on older formations. There are but few regions in which sedimentation is seen to have been apparently continuous from the Mississippian into the Pennsylvanian ("Coal Measures").

FROM the time of its organization down to 1917, a period of more than eighty years, Phelps, Dodge & Co. was seldom involved in what could be called a major labor difficulty. Behind this remarkable record lay both a philosophy and its practical application. The philosophy was an attitude toward society called the Golden Rule. That philosophy had been a living principle in the lives of the founders of the company, Anson Phelps, Daniel James, and William E. Dodge. Their successors, William E. Dodge, Jr., and Daniel Willis James, accepted the same philosophy. Dr. James Douglas governed his life by it. All of these men and their families had given tangible expression to that conviction in benefactions of great magnitude and variety-churches, hospitals, educational institutions, libraries, missionary undertakings, and other organizations for human betterment, such as the Young Men's and Young Women's Christian Associations, and the development of model communities about their mills and factories. The solubilities of hydrogen in titanium and several of its alloys were determined at 600 to 1000°C and pressures of 0.05 to 10µ of mercury. Solubility increases with increasing beta phase in the alloys. Factors found to affect degassing rates are specimen size and presence of thick surficial oxide. Removal of hydrogen by heating in vacuum and in flowing inert atmospheres was studied. Practical curves predicting minimum degassing times are presented. THE presence of hydrogen in titanium and titanium alloys has detrimental effects on the mechanical properties of the metal.'"," The hydrogen content of commercial titanium is sometimes of the order of 200 ppm by weight' and varies with alloy composition. As a consequence, titanium and some titanium alloys as normally processed are sometimes not ductile unless treated to lower the hydrogen content. The best known hydrogen-removal treatment is heating the material in a vacuum. The rate of removal (degassing) at a give temperature determines the duration of the treatment required to attain a satisfactory low hydrogen level.

WELL known to every metallurgist is the fact that different production schedules will profoundly affect the character of annealed metal strip. Yet the number of conditions [ ] that may be wrought by different combinations of rolling and annealing schedules is so myriad that despite the continual research that is being applied to this subject, the complete picture is not yet known. Copper, like all other metals, during the process of rolling or annealing, develops certain crystallographic configurations which should not be dismissed as being too impractical, for the crystallographic condition existing within the metal is a principal influence upon both the external mechanical properties and the behavior of the material [ ] when it is subjected to such operations as bending, flanging, drawing, and so forth. A description and capabilities of the Mine Roof Simulator at the Pittsburgh Mining Technology Center is illustrated for testing longwall roof support equipment. This unique Mine Roof Simulator has the capacity to exert 3 million lbs. of compressive force vertically and 1.6 million lbs. of force horizontally to simulate loads on hydraulic supports typically found in longwall mining. The supports that undergo testing are instrumented with strain gauges and photoelastic coatings such that critically strained areas become readily apparent. These critically strained areas are redesigned or retrofitted with appropriate reinforcement and retested. A data base will be accumulated from several support designs that will lead to an optimized design that will have the potential to reduce downtime by malfunctions of supports and thus increase productivity. A typical test procedure and analysis is given for a two leg 350 ton shield along with a description for placement of strain gauges, displacement gauges, and hydraulic pressure monitors for critical sites.

A company must have an organized approach to effectively sort through the profusion of available software and hardware and find the programs and equipment which fit defined needs. The selection process must build a complete compatible system which includes hardware and software. The methodology presented in this paper helps identify some of the more important considerations. The steps needed for an organized approach to software/hardware selection are: •All involved staff should contribute to an assessment of current computer capabilities and projection of future needs. •Alternatives are analyzed to determine what software and hardware is available and how selections may possibly be merged into the existing computer system. The evaluation process focuses on details of program capability and hardware compatibility. Analysis must be done to determine how closely individual programs fit the established requirements. The final decision is often a balance of needs between program capabilities and hardware availability. Any programs selected must be able to run on existing and newly purchased hardware. Any additional hardware selected must be capable of meshing with the available computer system.

THE function of gas in the development and production of oil has far reaching consequences that should be emphasized. The technical aspects of the subject have recently had a great deal of attention but less thought has been given to fundamental concepts underlying oil and gas law and the many customs and practices that have grown up in the industry. I shall re- view briefly the advance in knowledge of the subject and attempt to relate these concepts to legislative, judicial and operating problems. Early writers on oil and gas in Pennsylvania noted their close association in oil pools and their contemporaneous decline in output; also, that as gas pressure decreases so does production, that new offset wells reduce the output of existing wells, and even that tubing a well lengthens its flowing life. Expanding gas was deduced as the principal expulsive force. These fundamental observations had been made at least as early as 1880.l They were treated, however, as academic considerations and did not greatly influence law or practice for many years except to instil into all operators an urgent desire to hasten offset drilling to obtain as much of the flush as possible.

INTRODUCTION. THERE are three general methods available for obtaining commercial brown iron-ore : hand-screening; washing; and washing and concentrating. Hand-screening has produced a large tonnage of ore in the past, but is rapidly falling into disuse, except as a preliminary step, largely because modern furnace-practice requires all foreign material to be separated from ores before they are delivered to the furnace, and hand-screened ores can rarely be made to fulfill that requirement. Another argument against hand-screening is, that the waste-pile often contains as much ore as the screen recovers. The operation known as hand-screening consists of throwing the ore-bearing material against a stationary inclined screen of 0.5- to 0.75-in. mesh, similar in construction to the screens employed in sand-pits. The recently-prospected brown-ore deposits of Cuba seem to offer possibilities for hand-screening not possessed by the average American deposit, since these ores are not associated with worthless clays. Washing, and washing and concentrating, may be discussed together, since concentrating is never practical on brown iron-ore, except to treat ores that have already been washed. (Strictly speaking, washing might be classed as concentrating, but it is never so designated by brown-ore men.) The various steps of removing ore-bearing material and converting it into ore suitable for blast-furnace use, may be grouped under five heads: loading for transportation ; transporting ; feeding into the washer; washing; and concentrating. These five subjects will be considered in consecutive order. Each of these successive steps may be accomplished in a number of different ways, the choice depending entirely upon the character of the ore-bearing material to be treated.

PRESENT knowledge of the usual metallurgical slags indicates that they are, for the most part, rather complex in behavior and as yet there is no ready means for describing, in a simple manner, the behavior of any one of them. One of the best known slag systems is the iron oxide-silica-lime ternary which is the basic "solvent" in a number of important metallurgical refining operations, the basic open hearth being one of the most important. In this operation, the slag dissolves such components as sulphur, phosphorus, manganese oxide, and magnesia. Considerable study of this slag system and the behavior of these additions has been carried out in the past by a number of authors, as has been summarized in several critical reviews.','2 However, except for determination of the activity of iron oxide, only a limited amount of effort has been directed towards developing, from these data, an understanding of the general behavior of the basic solvent. Reported here are the results from a series of calculations based on data from the literature which permit a semiquantitative evaluation of the activities of iron oxide, silica, and lime (plus magnesia) in the ternary system at 1600°C. The preliminary results, which were reported briefly at a symposium held by AIME in 1953, have been revised and are completed. The steps in the calculation are as follows:* I—establish the activity curves and the curve of the excess molar free energy of mixing at 1600°C for each of the binary systems, 2—construct the activity surface of iron oxide for the ternary from the data on the binary systems and information available in the literature for the ternary area, 3—determine the surface of excess molar free energy of mixing for the ternary system from the activity surface of iron oxide and from the molar curves obtained for the binary system, and 4—differentiate the ternary surface of the molar excess free energy of mixing to obtain the ternary surfaces for the logarithm of the activity coefficients for silica and lime (log rslo, and log rc.~). Si0,-Fe,O: Schuhmann and Ensio have measured the activity of iron oxide in simple iron oxide-silica slags when in equilibrium with y iron. Their data recalculated to 1600°C are shown in Fig. 1. Also included is a point representing a measurement by Gokcen and Chipmana of the activity of iron oxide at 1600°C at the point of saturation with solid silica. For convenience and in accordance with other treatments,' the calculations are based on the hypothetical component, FelO, which is obtained by converting all the analyzed iron in the slag to FeO. In spite of Schuhmann and Ensio's conclusion that the activity of iron oxide in the system does not vary with temperature over the experimental range of 1258" to 1407"C, the data are corrected to 1600°C assuming that temperature does have an effect. It was felt to be most reasonable to assume that the term log rr.10 is a linear function of the reciprocal of the temperature. Reyu has indicated that an effect of temperature on the activities in this system is to be expected from the Schuhmann and Ensio data. In essence, the correction consists of multiplying the experimental value of log rf,,o by the ratio of the experimental temperature in Kelvin to 1873°K. The magnitude of the correction is not large, being approximately 11.5 pct of the experimental value of log rve10. A very minor correction was necessary to compensate for the fact that the slags were in equilibrium with y iron in the experiment, while at steel-making temperatures they would be in equilibrium with liquid iron. Data for the correction were obtained from Darken and Gurry. The standard states established are pure liquid iron oxide (FelO) in equilibrium with pure liquid iron (with the appropriate amount of oxygen in solution) and pure liquid silica. The method of plotting in Fig. 1 is convenient for the calculation of the activity of liquid silica and permits a reasonable extrapolation for the activity of Fe,O in the ranges where no experimental data are available. The uncertainty in the extrapolation to infinity at one terminal where Nvelo = 1 for the usual Gibbs-Duhem integration is reduced considerably by this method. The region of two coexisting liquid phases is estimated to range from 1.8 to 41.7 mol pct Fe,O. The nature of the activity curve for the single-phase region indicates that the activity of iron oxide across the two-phase region is very close to 0.39. Computation of the function log ~F,,o/(1— NF,,o)' for this region (dashed line) in conjunction with the curve through the adjusted experimental data indicate the best probable value of 0.382 for alPe,o in the two-phase area. The line from 0 to 0.018 Nf~~o is obtained by assuming that the component follows Henry's law. In this range, the value for log rveto is 2.59. Appropriate mathematical manipulation of the plotted linet yields the activity curves for the The curve AF", the excess molar free energy of mixing (actual minus ideal), as shown in Fig. 3 is also computed from Fig. 1. This curve is required for subsequent calculations. CaO-Fe,O: The phase diagram for the lime-iron oxide system when in equilibrium with liquid iron is not well known but there appears to be no intermediate compound present. This fact as well as the activity values for Fe,O extrapolated to the CaO-Fe,O binary from Taylor and Chipman' tend to indicate somewhat negative deviations from ideality for the activity curves for the two components. Strong indication of this is evident in Fig. 1 where are plotted the points computed from the estimated activities of Fe,O for the binary system.' It appears that the best line through the data is a horizontal straight line. A SPECIAL meeting arranged by the Petroleum and Gas Committee of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers was held on Tuesday and Wednesday, Sept. 21 and 22, in the Assembly Room of the American Annex Hotel, St. Louis, Mo. Preceding the first session on Tuesday morning, the members and guests were registered and presented with the usual Institute badges. The morning session was opened at 10:30 by Ralph Arnold of Los Angeles, Calif., Chairman of the Petroleum and Gas Committee. In his opening remarks, he suggested that the petroleum section specialize more and more on the technical problems of the oil industry and that an effort be made to enlarge the membership of the Institute among the technical men of the industry. The following program was presented : OIL FIELDS OF RUSSIA, by A. Beeby Thompson and T. G. Madgwick, of London, England. Presented by H. A. Wheeler; discussed by Arthur Knapp and R. VanA. Mills. This most comprehensive paper was one of what is hoped to be a series to be presented by some of our foreign members. It is by far the best description in English of the world-famous Baku and other fields of Russia.

(communication to the Secretary*) :—Although Mr. Bordeaux prefaces his paper with the statement-that it is a general outline of practice in the Republic, many of his statements seem to be made from the view-point of a particular case, which does not always agree with general practice. For the purpose of calling attention to some of these variations, I respectfully offer the following comments: The operation of crushing and grinding is performed by so many different methods and systems that it is useless to select any one as the standard. However, primary crushing in rock-breakers followed by stamps is thus far so general that it might be so classified. Whether or not it is the best way, is open to question. Regrinding may be performed by any of the various types of Chilean mills, Huntington mills, or similar machines, or the material may be taken directly from the stamps and delivered to the tube-mills. Mr. Bordeaux's statement that " the slimes can be treated only by decantation; the new Butters slime-filter, as used in Nevada, does not seem to be successful with silver-ores," is surely an error. All over Mexico many of the purely silver-ores are being successfully handled by the Butters or similar filters, such as the Moore and the Burt filters, and a letter to the manufacturers of these filters will undoubtedly bring a list of the silver-ores now being successfully treated in this way. The statement that crushing silver-ores in solution is impossible is equally erroneous. Most modern mills crush the ore in solution, in some cases containing as much as 0.12 per cent, of KCN. I cannot for the moment recall any modern mill in Mexico which does not follow this practice. There may be some reason for it in particular instances, but, generally speaking, the practice is to crush in solution. Care in installation avoids any mechanical loss of cyanide, and the chemical loss is so small as to be negligible.

INTRODUCTION The toughest job for any mining company, large or small, is to locate and identify a property which it feels has the potential for development and which can be tied up through location, lease or option under terms within their means. In the case of a small company, this precludes grass-roots exploration with its attendant high costs and the extended time required to develop a prospect to the point of being a project. The small mining company, therefore must limit its search to known properties which, for various reasons, have been shut down or were never thoroughly developed at the time of discovery. These types of prospects are located either through literature search, familiarity with many mining areas in general, or through contacts and submittals from a variety of sources. In order to develop a marketable presentation to any investor, the basic requirements are the same: - the property must demonstrate the potential to provide a satisfactory return on investment - the evaluation study must be thorough and professionally developed. In order to promote any mining property, it is first necessary to know what you have. INFORMATION DEVELOPMENT We normally begin with a detailed literature search of the district, assembling all available data on the basic geology, production records, and old reports of this or neighboring properties and any other information which can be found. This will aid in the general understanding of the basic geology and hopefully allow a fairly detailed knowledge of the specific occurrence. With this information one can begin to speculate on the reserve potential and develop some high and low figures for estimating purposes as to mining method, production rate, metallurgy and begin developing estimated capital and operating costs. Cashflow runs are developed for varying tonnages (high and low), estimated high and low grades of metal and at differing market prices for the product. FINANCE CONTACTS Brooks Minerals, from its inception, has been an operating company and we have been able to assemble a small but experienced operating staff. For this reason we try to put together projects and joint ventures where we can be the operator and maintain a certain degree of control. Whether due to familiarity with many colleagues in the mining industry or due to unfamiliarity with the banking houses and securities markets, the approach to raising finance has generally been to contact the established mining companies. This requires a familiarity with the corporate philosophies of these companies with respect to their development goals and financial capabilities. A common mistake is to shotgun the proposal to many companies of different sizes and goals in hopes that one might be interested. It is more beneficial, when possible, to tailor a proposal to each company, stressing the positive points where the specific proposal best meets their interests. One company may be more interested in a development program with fairly certain and conservative return potential. The property may well contain both possibilities but a lack of understanding of the individual company's method of operation could spoil the deal. In another instance, one company may look at a property as a moderate income producer over an extended life, yet a second may elect to high-grade the deposit over a shorter period in order to provide early cash flow or take advantage of a favorable market situation. THE construction of rescue-apparatus on the principle of furnishing the wearer with air from a tank containing it under high pressure was given up by inventors about 20 years ago. Such an apparatus must supply continuously, for not less than two hours, nearly 50 liters of pure air at atmospheric pressure per minute, or a total of 6,000 liters (210 cu. ft.); and a cylinder containing this amount of air, under 2,000 lb. pressure, would weigh 180 lb. or more. Although apparatus has been recently constructed utilizing liquified air, no experiments have been made to determine the regularity with which the air is generated, nor has its chemical composition been determined. Moreover, the chief objection to such an apparatus is the' difficulty and cost of keeping on hand a large quantity of liquified air. The system of furnishing the wearer of a breathing-apparatus with air which has given the best results, and has found employment in all the devices now in practical use, is that in which the air contained in the human lungs at the beginning of the work is regenerated by the apparatus. By means of chemicals, such as caustic potash and caustic soda, the carbonic acid gas, CO., exhaled is absorbed, and the oxygen that has been consumed is replaced from a tank containing this gas under high pressure. The pressure of the oxygen (which is 1,875 lb. in the two cylinders at the beginning of the work) is automatically reduced to 75 lb., and is sufficient to keep the air inside of the apparatus in constant circulation, and to force it to pass through the chemicals provided for the absorption of the CO, gas.
