MUCH has been said and written of the "Big Inch," of the terrific obstacles encountered in its construction, of the colorful and tough men engaged in its building, but little has been publicized of the engineering and economic problems behind the scenes. Long before Pearl Harbor it was apparent to the petroleum industry that a critical oil shortage could be expected along the Atlantic seaboard, owing to delay in tanker deliveries as a result of convoy movements, and to allocation of vessels for foreign shipments. This area, with a normal consumption of approximately 1,800,000 barrels per day of oil and products, was almost entirely supplied by tanker. Pipe lines supplied an average of only 20,000 barrels per day in 1939, 40,300 barrels per day in 1940, and 55,000 barrels per day in 1941. A small amount of oil and products was also delivered via barge.

Maurice Rey—The influence of cyclone diameter upon the fineness of separation is an important point which, however, cannot be discussed adequately if the injection pressure or the rate of flow are not specified. Perhaps some light can be thrown on the matter by using the formulas derived by Dahlstrom. Let us consider several geometrically similar cyclones where the apertures e and b are equal and proportional to the diameter D and which are operated with the same pressure drop. Eq 8 of Dahlstrom's paper can be written: Q Q = K D'. " or. if F is constant: Q = K D18 K is a constant of proportionality. Introducing this value of Q in eq 13 gives elimination efficiency = K D ,41 Elimination efficiency, in the terminology of Dahl-strom, means the diameter of particles, in microns, which divide equally between the underflow and the overflow. This denomination is regrettable and it would be preferable to call it diameter of separation or characteristic size or any other name connoting a size rather than an efficiency. Whatever the name used, the above equation shows a slow increase in the fineness of separation when the diameter of the cyclone decreases. For example, if a 14-in. cyclone gives a 400-mesh separation (37 microns), geometrically similar cyclones, having the same pressure drop will give separations at the sizes shown below.

Myers, vice-chairman, in the afternoon. In the morning session a paper by W. N. Logan on "Mineral Wool Resources of Indiana" was read by H. H. Hughes. Mr. Logan explained that as Indiana is the principal source of mineral wool, the paper might well he entitled "Mineral Wool Resources of the United States."

Advances in numerical methods of analysis and computer technology during the past decade have brought many formerly intractable ground control problems within easy reach of present day graduate mining engineers. However, the new technology brings with it new problems. The identity of these problems are largely those arising from a lack of familiarity with the capabilities and limitations of the new technology. In this regard, the central problem in ground control planning is the calculation of ground motion associated with mining. The fundamentals of this problem leading to a form suitable for computer programming are therefore reviewed. Solution procedures in the broad sense including the gathering of input data and the interpretation of output are described. Computer program capabilities necessary for ground control analysis are discussed and the steps necessary to implement an analysis are outlined.

The writing that is effective is woven with a fine texture into an agreeable pattern; it is free from knots, loose threads, and stray fluff. The instrument that weaves this literary fabric, whether it produce a homely sock or a lordly tapestry, a simple story or a learned 'Itreatise, is a disciplined intelligence, as sure as a steel needle, as precise as a swift loom. The simile breaks down at this point, for the product of the pen is instinct with the human spirit and therefore transcends in beauty anything made by a mere machine. If words are to be woven into eloquent meaning, they must be well knit. Upon the relation of words to each other and of groups of words to other groups, known as phrases, clauses, and sentences, depends the success of writing as a means of trans¬mitting thought from man' to man. To be understood beyond question, you should know not only what your words denote but how to build your sentences; you must not only choose your words aright but construct your sentences properly. A sentence is a combination of words that makes complete sense; it says something about something. ' A clause is a subordinate sentence or a sentence within a sentence. A phrase is a group of words without a predicate; it makes sense, but not complete sense. For example: I shall wait for a few minutes before I go home: The whole statement is a sentence; "I shall wait" and "before I go home" are clauses; "for a few minutes" is an adverbial phrase. The orderly arranging of words and of combinations of words is called `syntax'; and from the original Greek form, ouvaeis (suntaxis), is derived the Greek name for an editor,

For years before the war, Coal had the reputation of being a sick industry. Currently it is operating at peak production and succeeding pretty well in keeping out of the red. But, says Mr. Weidenhammer, it will have a relapse as soon as the war ends unless (1) working capital can be built up; (2) it gets the support of the people and Congress; and (3) a truly long-range national fuel policy is formulated.

In a recent paper, Held1 showed that rolling conditions can have a marked effect on the volume fraction of surface texture produced in low-carbon steel. This variation in rolling texture is reflected in the recrys-tallization texture and affects the plastic properties of the annealed sheet. The fact that roll friction can influence the surface deformation texture in iron and steel has been known for some time;'= but the magnitude of the effect has never been shown quite so clearly before. The analogous effect during wire drawing has been recognized for many year.4 Dillamore and Roberts5 examined surface textures in warm- and cold-rolled aluminum and copper. They found that when a surface texture was present it could be described as the interior texture rotated about the transverse sheet direction. The angle of rotation was a function of the type of lubrication, the amount of reduction per pass, and the temperature of rolling. The purpose of the present note is to show that surface textures in cold-rolled iron can also be described as interior textures rotated about the transverse sheet direction. Vacuum-melted electrolytic iron* was straight- rolled 90 pct at room temperature in a two-high rolling mill with 5-in.-diam rolls. Two rolling procedures were used: a) no lubrication with reductions of about 0.035 in. per pass, and b) heavy lubrication with lano-line and reductions of about 0.002 in. per pass. The final sheet thickness was 0.030 in. (110) pole figures were determined by transmission through specimens taken from the sheet surface and sheet midplane. The surface texture of the sheet cold-rolled according to procedure a is shown in Fig. l.* The shapes of the low-intensity contour lines indicate that the texture can be described as a partial fiber texture with a (110) fiber axis normal to the sheet. The approximate range of orientstions present is (011)[211] — (0ll)[100] — (011)[211]. This range of orientations is what one would obtain by rotating the interior texture 90 deg about the transverse sheet direction. The intensity of (110) and (222) reflections from planes parallel to the surface was measured after removing metal from the surface by chemical polishing. Flotation of chalcopyrite from a low grade ore was studied by using different xanthates and dixanthogens as collectors and by conditioning the flotation pulp with oxidizing gaseous systems. The improvement in the recovery of chalcopyrite with the oxidizing systems was mainly due to the auto-activation of chalcopyrite, leading to the enhanced adsorption of xanthates and dixanthogens even when the latter were formed by oxidation of the xanthates. With air or oxygen as oxidizing system, the amount of ethyl xanthate required at pH 8.5 was much less than normally employed in the industry, the recovery being 97-99% of chalcopyrite with a concentrate of 24% copper. With isopropyl and isoamyl xanthates, the recovery was improved but the grade was lowered. By conditioning the pulp with air-CO2 or oxygen-CO2 mixture, the recovery was lowered with ethyl xanthate only, mainly due to the depressant action of bicarbonate formed. Flotation with dixanthogens gave cleaner concentrates of chalcopyrite. because iron pyrite did not float with these collectors. Of the dixanthogens tried, diisopropyl dixanthogen gave the highest recovery, 99% chalcopyrite with a concentrate containing 28.5 to 30% copper, when the pulp at pH 8.5 was condi-tioned with air. Isopropyl dixanthogen was found to be the best collector of all the xanthates and dixanthogens studied. It was found that the adsorbed ethyl, isopropyl and isoamyl xanthates at chalcopyrite surface, activated by cupric sulfate, and at iron pyrite surface were oxidized to the corresponding dixanthogens to different degrees in presence of air, oxygen, air-carbon dioxide mixture and oxygen-carbon dioxide mixture.' The dixanthogen formed at chalcopyrite surface was, however, firmly adsorbed while that at iron pyrite surface was easily desorbed. Since dixanthogens formed have greater hydrophobicity than the corresponding xanthates, as revealed by contact angles,1,2 the former were expected to improve the flotation results. It was, therefore, thought desirable to find out the effect of air, oxygen, air-carbon dioxide mixture and oxygen-carbon dioxide mixture on the selective flotation of chalcopyrite when individual xanthates were used as collectors. The effect of direct use of dixanthogens as collectors on the selective flotation of chalcopyrite was also investigated. For these studies, low grade chalcopyrite ore, received from the Indian Copper Corp., Ltd. (I.C.C.), Ghatsila, Bihar, was employed. At the milling plant of the I.C.C., chalcopyrite is floated at a pH of 8.5, employing ethyl xanthate as collector. EXPERIMENTAL Materials Employed: XANTHATES - Ethyl, isopropyl and isoamyl xanthates of potassium were prepared in a pure state by the methods described earlier.4 A 0.03% aqueous solution of a xanthate was freshly prepared in air-free distilled water for flotation studies. DIXANTHOGENS - Diethyl, diisopropyl and diisoamyl dixanthogens were prepared by the oxidation of xanthates by iodine and purified by extraction with petroleum ether. A 0.03% alcoholic solution of dixanthogen was used as a collector. FROTHER - A 0.2% solution of pine oil in ethyl alcohol was employed. SODIUM CARBONATE - A 0.4 N solution was used. ORE - The composition of the -100 +200-mesh size (Tyler standard) powdered ore, as determined by standard methods of analysis, was: copper 1.57%, iron 10.29%, sulfur 3.15% and acid insolubles 66.10%. Iron present as chalcopyrite (CuFeS2) was 1.38%, while that present as iron pyrite (FeS,) was 1.37%. Both chalcopyrite and iron pyrite were found to be liberated from the gangue minerals and from each other, as observed under a microscope. Flotation of Chalcopyrite with Xanthates in Presence of Different Gaseous Systems: Fifteen grams of -100 + 200-mesh size ore were shaken well with 100 ml of distilled water. The pH of the pulp was adjusted to 8.5 by the addition of sodium carbonate solution. Then 0.1 ml of xanthate solution (0.005 lb xanthate per ton of the ore) was mixed with the pulp, and the latter together with washings transferred to a

Safety work in mining at the Andes Copper Mining Company, Potrerillos, Chile, is divided into three parts: (1) accident prevention, (2) fire prevention and protection, and (3) silicosis prevention and control. In the company's operations a steady campaign has been waged to reduce accidents and silicosis, and to prevent fires. In the following pages the safety record for the past twelve years will be examined and the methods explained by which the accident rate was reduced. Table 1 contains yearly data pertaining to the scale of the mining operations and the accident record. Block caving is used for all ore production and the tonnage mined has averaged 30,000 short tons per day for the past seven years. Table 2 classifies 44 fatal accidents which have occurred since 1935. The leading causes of accidental death are transportation of ore and use of explosives, followed in order by persons falling, falls of ground, and by asphyxiation. In the case of serious accidents, however, the greatest cause is falls of ground, followed, in turn, by ore transportation, persons falling, explosives, and asphyxiation. Accident Prevention The improvement of the safety record was obtained by a combination of many factors. In surveying the results at Andes for the past twelve years, it is possible to select some features of the present operation which have contributed to the accident record. The most important of these are: (1) good staff planning, (2) good equipment, (3) an alert safety organization, and (4) education and selection of the workmen. GOOD STAFF PLANNING As a result of good staff planning, the mine has good working conditions, namely, good ventilation, moderate temperatures and humidity, and good lighting. These factors not only reduce accidents but also improve efficiency. In haulage work, accidents have been reduced by having traffic move in a forward direction only. The latter makes possible a one-man train crew. Trains are centrally dispatched from loading drifts which are interconnected by signal lights, so that when a train in a lateral drift is given permission to move into a main line drift, a red light signals in all other lateral drifts in that area. Good track is maintained, and safety niches are required at all switch throws. Since safety niches were provided there have been no fatal or serious accidents at such points. All main line haulage drifts are illuminated by electric lights. Haulage drifts are kept clean. Adequate clearance has been provided between cars and between cars and the sides of the haulage drifts. The 4 1/2 ton Cranby type cars are equipped with roller bearings, and the 10 ton loconlotives with trolley shoes instead of wheels. These two features are responsible for improved ore haulage conditions and contribute to greater efficiency and safety.

Although present electrolytic zinc manufacturing processes are aimed at the direct wet process recovery of the metal, and, with this end in view, several industrial scale patents have been applied for during the last few years, the object of this paper is to enhance the possible metallurgical interest in the conventional recovery of zinc and other metals from leaching residues. Therefore, its main end is the description and discussion of the recovery process of zinc, lead and cadmium from leaching residues. Fundamentally, the process consists of the following: Flotation processing to recover the non-roasted blende still contained in the residues. Pyrometallurgical processing of flotation tails in low-shaft furnaces (kilns) and open-flame rotating furnaces and the ensuing recovery of zinc, lead and cadmium as a mixture of their oxides through volatilization.

No method of roof control yet devised has proven to be universally acceptable for the wide range of strata conditions experienced in U. S. coal mines. However, a relatively new innovation, the roof truss, has proven itself capable of preventing roof failures which both conventional and resin bolting could not. Presently, the economics of roof trusses are not favorable when compared to bolting due primarily to drilling and installation procedures, but this is expected to change with improved truss and equipment designs. To realize the full potential of this new method of roof control, design criteria are needed which can optimize the effect of the truss for varying strata conditions. A review of the literature reveals that some work has been conducted on the roof truss. Cambrell and Haynes1 (1970) showed that the roof truss is superior to angled roofbolts installed through a header. Sheorey, Verma, and Singh2 (1973) used statics to prove that the optimum angle of inclination should be greater than 45°. However, to date, no systematic attempt has been made to establish design criteria. In this paper, the problem was approached in three ways. First, model studies were performed to determine general trends of truss support as a function of a number of variables. This provided a better understanding of the support mechanism involved. Secondly, beam theory was employed to calculate the actual support capacity of a truss, realizing the many simplifications, assumptions, and shortcomings of this approach to such a complicated problem. Last, field testing will be utilized to test the hypotheses previously developed and provide hard data to further synthesize roof truss design criteria. Field testing has recently commenced and should be complete before mid 1977.

From 1955 to 1958 the Phillips Petroleum Co. conducted a series of small scale counterflow combustion field tests in a tar sand about 60-ft deep and 6 to 12-ft thick near Bellamy, Mo. A total of seven different well patterns, including conventional five-spots and seven-spots plus a 15-well line drive pattern and a 10-well radial pattern, were employed. Electric heaters, gas burners and wellbore fuel packs were tested as counterflow ignition devices. Direct drive ignition followed by reversal to counterflow operation was not possible in this case because of formation plugging by the semi-solid tar during the direct drive phase. Sustained counterflow burning was achieved with wellbore fuel packs under conirolled conditions which permitted close correlation of fire front velocity, air velocity, air-oil ratios and yields for a wide variation in process parameters. The tar in place was about 10' APl with a reservoir viscosity greater than 500,000 cp. The composite oil prodlcct was 26' API with a viscosity in the range of 5 to 15 cp. Vertical sweep efficiency in the line drive pattern was essentially 100 per cent, with no evidence of gravity segregation. Original tar in place ranged between 800 and 1,000 bbllacre-ft, specific rock permeability averaged about 800 md before burning and effective air pemeability with residual oil and water in place (at the time of ignition) averaged 250 md. The volume of oil recovered during stabilized line drive counterflow burning represented about 67 per cent of the volume of tar originally in place in the burned out zones. A minimum was found when air-oil ratios were plotted against formation air velocities, and a limiting air velocity existed below which the counterflow fire front reversed and burned back over its own trajectory, using the residual coke left behind. INTRODUCTION Early in 1955 the Phillips Petroleum Co. began preparations to field test counterflow underground combustion as a method for producing oil from high viscosity hydrocarbon deposits, such as bituminous (tar) sands. At that time all published information on the use of underground burning io increase oil recovery was based on the direct drive process, in which the fire front moved through the formatim in the same direction as the injected air stream. Such direct burning is not applicable to many heavy oil sands or to most tar sands because the heat-thinned native hydrocarbon congeals in the cold rock ahead of the fire front forming a gas permeability block which smothers the combustion. Laboratory experiments first demonstrated that this permeability blocking would not occur if the fire front and the air stream moved in opposite directions. In this counterflow (reverse) burning process the heated heavy oil or tar is driven back through the combustion zone. Here thermal cracking produces relatively light hydrocarbon products which pass through the heated rock behind the fire front (largely in the vapor phase) and are incapable of causing a gas permeability block.' Exploratory wring revealed that consolidated bituminous sandstones with a combination of tar saturation, permeability, thickness and depth favorable for experimental field testing existed at several points in western Missouri. By the fall of 1955, a test site for determining technical feasibility of the counterflow process under field conditions had been selected near Bellamy, Vernon County, Mo. — about fifty miles north of Joplin. The pay zone was too thin and too shallow to constitute a commercial prospect, but these same factors permitted controlled experimental operation with a small compressor installation and with a large number of monitor wells. These were needed for adequate observation of the underground phenomena at reasonable cost. RESERVOIR CHARACTERISTICS The reservoir chosen for the experimental field tests was a 124 thick section of tar sand extending from 49 to 61 ft subsurface, with shale and siltstone laminations sealing the top and bottom. This section was part of a larger 30-ft thick tar sand deposit which extended both above and below the test zone. Core analyses showed that the 12-ft sand was effectively subdivided into two approximately equal sections, with the lower zone being consistently more permeable than the upper zone. The most significant laboratory core data are summarized in Table 1. The line drive test which is the principal subject of this report utilized only the lower 6-ft thick zone, with the upper zone regarded as part of the 55-ft overburden. WELL PATTERNS The over-all field test program involved a total of seven different well patterns, including conventional five-spots and seven-spots plus a 15-well line drive pattern and a 10-well radial pattern. PREPARATION CONTROL IN UNDERGROUND MINING Selective Mining According to district Depending upon the particular geographic loca- tion or seam characteristics, modern raw coal preparation practices can be used to obtain improved product quality and uniformity. Nevertheless, certain coal markets may require only marginal quality while others may require very high quality, and these objectives may be sought by commencing the preparation of coal underground at the "working face." Under- ground preparation involves choosing those portions of the seam which can be cleaned to satisfy predetermined market requirements involving ( 1 ) maintenance of uniformity in chemical quality, (2) elimination of removable impurities, (3) control of sizes and size ratios, and (4) control of moisture. The methods employed to attain these objectives vary widely with the (1 ) seam under development, (2) mining equipment available, and (3) changing trends in the consuming markets. When a mining property is opened and development progresses from one section to another, the (1) petrography of the coal in the seam does not remain uniform, (2) character of roof and floor are subject to change, and (3) character and prevalence of mineral impurities are subject to considerable variation. The quality of coal shipped to market from any mine depends upon intelligent foresight, planning, execution, and supervision. Mining becomes a highly technical art. The quality of coal as determined by chemical and petrographic analysis is without question one of the most important considerations in the development and life of any coal-mining property. Variations in such proper- ties as volatile matter, ash, sulfur, Btu content, and petrography are of considerable interest, and to a limited extent so are such properties as phosphorous content, free swelling index, plasticity, hardness, pressure formation during coking, and ash composition. The maximum and minimum specifications of these characteristics as established by competitive market conditions place definite limits on the marketability of a coal.

THE grades of commercial steel produced in large quantities can be divided into two general types from the standpoint of ingot structure-killed and rimmed. Killed steel covers a wide variety with carbon contents throughout the range of the steel portion of the iron-carbon diagram, and is the kind usually used in the production of alloy steels. Rimmed steel is normally associated with carbon ranges under 0.30 per cent, and is not yet used to a large extent in alloy practice, except for copper-bearing steels. The fundamental differences in the ingots made from these two types of steel can be seen most easily in Figs. 1 to 7. In the rimmed ingot shown in Figs. 5 to 7 there are two lines of blowholes approximately parallel to the sides and coming together at the top and at the bottom of the ingot. In the killed ingots shown in Figs. 1 to 4 these blowholes are not present. Also, the rimmed ingot has no well defined pipe, as com-pared to the deep pipe on the killed ingots, and there are numerous pri-mary blowholes in the lower portion of the rimmed ingot perpendicular to the surface and close to it, while on the killed ingot there are no blowholes of this type in the ingot shown in Fig. 1 and very small ones close to the surface in the lower part of the ingot shown in Figs. 2 to 4. With respect to the presence of pipe and the primary blowholes, the structure may vary considerably in both rimmed and killed ingots, therefore these cannot be considered as fundamental structural characteristics differ-entiating the two types of steel. The primary blowholes in rimmed ingots may be much less pronounced than those in the ingot shown in Figs. 5 to 7-as, for example, in "ingot iron," which is entirely free from them. An example of a cross section of an ingot-iron ingot is shown on page 16 of "Research and Methods of Analysis of Iron and Steel," published by the American Rolling Mill Co. (1920). A certain amount of pipe may also occur in rimmed ingots, though it is normally porous and not as well defined or deep as in the killed ingot of Fig. 1. In order to predict the influence of blasting on slopes, one must first understand the action of explosives, the manner in which rock is broken or displaced, and how seismic waves are transmitted, and the nature of these seismic waves. In this paper, the author describes the action of high explosives on rock masses, beginning at the source of the explosion, extending through the zone of rupture to a distance where only elastic waves of low energy persist. The paper describes the relationships between explosives charge quantities and distances, including the character and intensity of the seismic waves in various types of terrain. In looking at the analysis of slopes subjected to seismic waves, it has been common practice to assume a simplified model in which the anticipated acceleration is applied horizontally to the slope as an equivalent static force, or a model in which there is a rigid base subjected to mechanical shaking. Such models do not accurately portray blasting activity taking place within or near the slope in question. In dealing with blasting effects, it is important to under- stand seismic wave types, wave lengths, attenuation and transmission paths, as well as vibration intensity. In most cases, those slopes that are the least stable under static loading will also be the least stable under dynamic loading, although there may be rare exceptions. Thus, the more that is known about a slope statically, the better will be the assessment of it dynamically.

As a marked improvement in the quality of castings has been noted when this iron is used in the foundry mixtures, a series f melting tests f mixtures of great variety of composition was conducted with the idea f getting comparative strengths from which the effect of nickel¬chromium could be seen. These tests, on account of their number, and degree of accuracy desired, were made by the crucible melting method. The paper gives the tables of results, a series f curves showing the inter-relation of the elements involved, and a summary of the conclusions derived. THE presence of nickel-chromium in pig iron made from Cuban ores is so well known that the word "Mayan" is unconsciously associated with it. Since 1904, when exploration of the Mayari deposits of iron ore in northeastern Cuba was undertaken, there has been increasing interest in these ores. The TRANSACTIONS contain numerous references to them. This iron ore, which is shipped to the. United States in the nodulized state, has been thoroughly tested and found very valuable; the deposit covers over 25,000 acres and there is in sight over 500,000,000 tons of ore that, by systematic mining, runs practically constant in composition. With nickel and chromium present, also titanium in sufficient quantities to attract attention, as well as extremely low phosphorus and sulfur contents, the iron founder is naturally interested in the utilization of Mayari ore for pig iron for the better grades of finished iron products. OUTOKUMPU, a large copper mine in eastern Finland, has the distinction of being one of the few important mines in the world discovered by a geologist the late Otto Triistedt, of the Geological Sur- vey of Finland, having found the out- clop in 1910 by tracing glacial ore boulders, some of which had been carried as far as fifty kilometres. As the mine had no connection with either railways or waterways and the possibilities of transport were poor, the owners first tried the Hybinette hydrometallurgical process to extract the copper. The raw ore was finely crushed, treated by a sulphatizing roast. and then leached. The resulting solution was electrolyzed, using lead anodes. The Ti-Fe and Ti-Fe-0 systems were re-examined because of the controversy regarding the existence of Ti2Fe, and to consider all available data points to the existence of Ti,Fe. The Ti-Fe-0 system contains two ternary compounds: E, corresponding to Ti2Fe; and y. SEVERAL authors have investigated the constitution of titanium-rich alloys of the Ti-Fe system. The most extensive study of titanium-rich portions of the Ti-Fe system was by Van Thyne, Kessler, and Hansen,' who investigated this system up to 50 pet Fe and used the highest purity materials available for their alloy preparation (iodide titanium was used for alloys up to 20 pet Fe). According to Van Thyne et al., phase relationships in the region of investigation are governed by phases a,ß, and TiFe. No evidence of an intermetallic compound Ti,Fe was found. although earlier. works by Laves and Wallbaum,' and Duwez and Taylor' reported its existence. Rostoker's study on the occurrence of TilX phases" confirmed the findings of Van Thyne et al. Rostoker proposed that the compound Ti Fe found by Duwez does not exist but is actually a ternary compound, Ti1Fe3O, originated by inadvertent oxygen contamination. The partial isothermal section of the ternary Ti-Fe-0 system as reported by Rostoker' seems to confirm this explanation. In the course of phase diagram work conducted at New York University, however, certain irregularities were observed to be associated with ternary systems of the type Ti-Fe-X. The ternary phase 6, observed in the systems Ti-Fe-Mo' and Ti-Fe-V." was found to be structurally identical to the com-pound Ti2Fe as reported by Duwez and Taylor, and to Rostoker's compound Ti1,Fe2O. Since the amount of oxygen possibly present in the Ti-Fe-Mo and Ti-Fe-V systems could not account for the observed amounts of the compound, it appears that the d phase in these systems is not Ti,Fe,O. On the other hand, considering the amounts of the 6 phase, particularly in the Ti-Fe-Mo system, the location of the phase was uncertain. It was felt that the introduction of the Ti2Fe phase would alleviate some of the inconsistencies of the two systems. Because of the uncertainties relating to the phase Ti2Fe, or Ti1Fe2O, it appeared worthwhile to re-examine the Ti-Fe and Ti-Fe-O systems in the vicinity of these compounds with highly sensitive metallographic techniques and with X-ray methods. Experimental Procedure Alloy Preparation—For the study of the binary system four alloys were prepared, containing 26.9 (30 wt pct), 34.0 (37.5 wt pet), 41.2 (45 wt pet), and 56.3 (60 wt pet) atomic pet Fe, and for the ternary Ti-Fe-O system 18 alloys were prepared in the composition range of 1.6 to 16.9 atomic pet 0 and 24.3 to 55.7 atomic pet Fe. The materials used for the Ti-Fe alloys were iodide titanium (99.98 pet Ti, 0.002 pet 0) and Ferro-vac-E iron (99.95 pet Fe, 0.0052 to 0.0072 pet 0). For the Ti-Fe-O study the materials used were sponge titanium containing less than 0.06 pet 0, Ferrovnc-E iron, and Baker's analyzed TiO2. The nominal weight and atomic percentages of the ternary alloys prepared are shown in Table I. Melting—Charges of 10 to 15 g were melted in a nonconsumable arc furnace in argon atmosphere according to the technique described elsewhere.'" Since there was practically no weight loss through the various stages of melting and oxygen losses have not been observed previously, it appeared justifiable to use nominal composition for interpretation of data. Iodide titanium control buttons, of the same mass as the Ti-Fe charges, and melted under the same conditions, were used to check hardness pickup during melting. A hardness increase of 2 to 3 Vhn was found. Heat Treatment—The specimens were annealed in quartz capsules under argon. To avoid contact between the specimen and capsule material all specimens were wrapped in titanium sheet. The annealing times are given in Table 11. The attain-
