La finalización de la estimación de reservas de un modelo de mina cuestiona la asertividad del modelo de Mina para la planeación minera. En ese sentido, el presente texto señala la Reconciliación como la comparación real histórica de tonelaje, leyes y contenido fino estimado, entre el modelo de mina y planta concentradora. La reconciliación permite conocer y ajustar mediante el uso de factores, la planeación mensual y anual de los siguientes años de la operación minera, y así cumplir con los compromisos mensuales asumidos de envío de contenido fino desde mina. Así también se muestra el proceso que sigue la explotación minera a tajo abierto en Toquepala, las variables que influyen en la variación de la reconciliación y algunas pautas a considerar para minimizar estos errores de reconciliación entre mina y concentradora.

La determinación del cuarzo es un problema dentro de la Higiene Industrial, puesto que este mineral se convierte en una de las enfermedades ocupacionales causadas por la inhalación de pequeñas partículas de cuarzo encontradas en el aire. En ese sentido, el presente texto señala la importancia y peligrosidad de los polvos del mineral a través de la determinación cuantitativa de cuarzo en los polvos industriales, ya que el riesgo de adquirir silicosis es proporcional a la concentración de cuarzo en los polvos ambientales. Existen tres métodos para la determinación cuantitativa de cuarzo: El método químico, el de difracción de rayos X y el petrográfico. El método que presenta mejores beneficios es el de N. A. Talvitie, puesto que se basa en la propiedad del ácido fosfórico, donde se forma complejos solubles en agua con los silicatos y óxidos metálicos, quedando el cuarzo prácticamente inalterado.

"The Red Bluff porphyry is a tabular 2 km long north-west trending Early Jurassic quartz diorite to monzodiorite body that intrudes a folded Triassic greywacke sequence in the lskut River area, northwestern British Columbia. The porphyry is 500 m to 800 m northeast of the Snip orebody, which is a southwest-dipping shear-vein, termed the Twin zone that contains approximately 35 tonnes of gold.The intrusion associated with the mineralization is characterized by 0.3 cm to 4 cm phenocrysts of K-feldspar in a mediumgrained plagioclase porphyritic matrix. It is overprinted by pervasive sericite + quartz ± K-feldspar ± biotite (potassic) alteration characterized by intense stockworking of quartz veins containing magnetite--hematite bands. This assemblage is cut successively by quartz veins with minor iron-oxides and pyrite, and by younger pyrite veins with phyllic envelopes. The system is gold-rich but copper-poor, with typical grades between 0.25 g/t and 0.6 g/t Au, and 0.1% and 0.2% Cu. All styles of alteration and veining have similar abundances of these metals. Where southwest- and north-east dipping shear zones are developed in the porphyry, veins of all types are sheeted and foliation parallel. These sheeted zones are interpreted to be syntectonic. Asymmetric phenocrysts, folded veins and oblique foliations developed in the 130 haulageway of the Snip mine imply oblique normally-directed shear on the southwest-dipping foliation.The adjacent Twin zone is a high-grade auriferous shear-vein system that is internally banded with: (1) carbonate-chlorite-biotite veins, with textures indicating formation at least partially by wallrock replacement, and (2) dilatant quartz-sulphide veins. Veins commonly have potassic alteration envelopes that contain biotite ± calcite ± K-feldspar. The zone is highly deformed and schistose, with numerous kinematic indicators including shear bands, asymmetric folds, rotated porphyroclasts and oblique foliations that indicate a normally-directed shear sense which is parallel to that indicated by fabrics within the porphyry.Precious and base metal veins within 2 km or 3 km of the Red Bluff porphyry are zoned. Veins and shear-veins proximal to the intrusion, such as the Twin zone, are typically enriched in gold, copper and molybdenum, and have potassic alteration envelopes dominated by biotite. Distal veins usually contain relatively abundant zinc and lead and have sericitic alteration envelopes. Structures of both types have an Early Jurassic galena Pb-Pb isotope signature.The similarities in structural fabrics and alteration histories in both the Twin zone and the porphyry, the zoning of the vein systems in the area, and the apparently concordant Early Jurassic zircon U-Pb age from the porphyry and galena Pb-Pb dates from the Twin zone and surrounding vein systems suggest that intrusion, semi-brittle deformation and a large mineralizing hydrothermal system were closely related temporally and genetically."

The responsibilities for the work are shared between the owner and the contractor. ? Open Specifications: These leave the scope and design of the installation up to the micropile contractor. This method is the most common for securing bids on temporary micropile work. The responsibility for design and performance is clearly placed on the contractor. Open specifications are not recommended for permanent applications. This method allows the contractor to select the most economical micropile system. ? Prescriptive Specification: The Owner describes specific procedures that must be followed, but which may not necessarily describe the objective of the work. When prescriptive specifications are used, the owner is responsible for the proper performance of the system. The contractor is responsible for satisfying the details of the specifications. Performance specifications are the most common and best reflect the challenges and interests of micropile technology and applications.

"The Porcupine area is in northern Ontario at the intersection of N. Lat. 48° 30' and 81° W. Long. It is 125 miles due north of the Sudbury nickel range. Practically all the mineral production of this area has come from the townships of Tisdale, Deloro, Whitney, and Ogden, in order of importance. The accompanying map of the Porcupine area and its extensions to the east and west (Fig. 4) has been included to show what I consider to be an essential objective of this paper, a perspective for exploration.The discovery of gold ore in the Porcupine area at such an early date resulted from the extension of the Temiskaming and Northern Ontario railway and exploratory survey lines north into unexplored territory, for the early history of Porcupine is inextricably tied to the exploration along Niven's survey lines and the extension of the railway north from Cobalt to Nellie Lake. The following are the more significant events leading to the discovery of gold in Porcupine.1896-E. M. Burwash, employed by the Ontario Bureau of Mines, examined the country along Niven's base line and noted quartz veins that carried traces of gold. He was attached to Niven's survey party.1899-The late W. A. Parks reported on the geology of the portage route from Mattagami river to Night Hawk lake, for the Ontario Bureau of Mines. He noted the occurrence of gold in quartz veins and reported “I regard the region south of the trail to Porcupine lake as giving promise to the prospector"". He also was attached to Niven's survey party.1901-Charles Camsell, while prospecting for the Algoma Central railway, did some work on a vein occurrence carrying low gold on ground now known to be part of the Hollinger mine (3).1907- Extension of the Temiskaming and Northern Ontario railway to Nellie Lake.1909- Bannerman followed up Indian story about occurrence of coal, and found iron formation. He remained to prospect and found the gold-bearing vein of the Scottish Ontario property."

Process mineralogy forms an integral part of geometallurgy, with ore body characterisation being but one piece of the puzzle in optimising value derived from ore. This value is not only financial, but importantly speaks to sustainability from environmental and social standpoints. The reactive approach of traditional process mineralogy is increasingly being replaced by predictive methods in the geometallurgical sphere, for which mineralogical information must be timeously acquired on judiciously selected sample sets to understand ore variability and its impact on orebody processing. Such processes are not only metallurgical, but must incorporate mining and waste management protocols. Dwindling resources like water and energy also demand innovative approaches for lowering consumption and/or promoting recycling along the value chain. Addressing such challenges relies on appropriate characterisation of ore behaviour under different process regimes. Coupled with this, emerging characterisation tools are increasingly applied to understand the mineralogy of unconventionallypresented and difficult-to-process ores to meet societal and technology demands. Such tools are often accompanied by the generation of large, computationally intensive datasets, for which data management and storage are key requirements, particularly when deciphering temporal trends in ore and process variability. This paper will elaborate on these themes with examples that highlight the importance of process mineralogy throughout the minerals value chain. DURING the year 1907 an investigation of the Clinton formation in New York has been carried out under the direction of the State Geologist, and a full account of the results has been prepared for publication.1 The more important economic features of the report are summarized in the present paper. Previous knowledge of this, the type, section of the Clinton has been contributed mostly by Hall and Vanuxem in their reports for the Natural History Survey of New York, which were issued in their final form in 1842-43. Brief accounts of the ore-occurrences have been given by B. T. Putnam,2 J. C. Smock,3 A. H. Chester,4 and E. C. Eckel.5 Prof. C. H. Smyth, Jr.,6has discussed the origin of the Clinton ores in two papers, which, so far as the local occurrences are concerned, have removed all doubt that may have existed on that subject. "The opening chapter of this volume, by A. Ignatieff, places in perspective Canada's coal resource base as part of the world scene. This chapter will focus on the Canadian scene.Units of measurement in this report are in the International System of Units (SI) as approved for official use by the Canadian Standards Association and Metric Commission Canada. These units have been adopted by the Mining Association of Canada and the Coal Association of Canada. To assist with the shift to metric units these two associations have published ""Metric Practice Guide for the Canadian Mining and Metallurgical Industries"", 1978(1J, Appendix ""A"" lists some useful conversion factors along with SI prefixes. The last official assessment of Canada's coal resources and reserves was done by the Department of Energy, Mines and Resources and presented in Report ER 79-9 ""Coal Resources and Reserves of Canada"", published in December 1979 and authored by H.U. Bielenstein, L.P. Chrismas, B.A. Latour and T.E. Tibbetts(2). The Geological Survey of Canada has a continuing project concerned with coal resource assessment as does CANMET, whose concern is with coal reserve assessment and coal quality. As well, Alberta's Energy Resources Conservation Board (ERCB) has a continuing assessment program for coal in Alberta and publishes an annual reserves report, the current issue of which is cited as reference No. (3). The difference in resource and reserve terminology as used by EMR and ERCB has a major effect on derived tonnages for Alberta. This difference will be discussed later. In 1982 the Department of Energy, Mines and Resources produced a map titled ""Canada-Coal""<4J which outlines coalfields and illustrates coal import and export movements for the years 1981and1980. A copy of this map is contained in the map pocket of this publication. Two other resource assessment reports are noteworthy, the first is ""Coal Resources of Southern Saskatchewan: A Model for Evaluation Methodology"", by J.A. Irvine, S.H. Whitaker and P.L. Broughton<SJ which is one of the major outputs of a joint federal-government study of southern Saskatchewan's lignite deposits. (Another output from this same study' is the Geological Survey of Canada's SASCO file, a computer processable file holding borehole and coal quality data.) The second is ""Deep Coal Resources of the Interior Plains, Estimated from Petroleum Borehole Data"", by G.D. Williams and M.C. Murphy(6) which identifies coal resources from nearly 4,000 petroleum exploration boreholes distributed uniformly over an area spanning Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta and British Columbia."

THE field of rare metals is so broad that progress can be reported upon many important fronts. Not satisfied with the 92 elements that Mendeleeff and his followers have accepted as legitimate, scientists are trying now to complicate matters by making new elements. Enrico Fermi announced the fabrication of "Element 93". Uranium, instead of being allowed to disintegrate slowly according to its normal habit, was bombarded with neutrons until some of them seemed to have stuck in the nucleus. To understand just what is alleged to have happened all one has to do is to line up the elements in their usual order of ascending atomic weight and imagine, as physicists do, that each atom is a little solar orbit comprising a central mass or planet about which other masses revolve like satellites. Ordinary hydrogen, being very light, consists of only one positively charged proton center, with only one positively charged electron revolving about it. Other atones are progressively more complicated until we come to uranium, which has a relatively big center and 92 particles revolving around it.

While the original purpose of the Bureau of Mines work on fluorine micas was to synthesize large single crystals or film suitable to replace natural muscovite or phlogopite, the objective was broadened to include development of the many possible fluorine micas as a class of new, unique materials. Several methods were developed for the synthesis of the fluorine micas at atmospheric pressure: Solid state reaction, melting in crucibles, internal resistance electric melting, and arc resistance electric melting. The latter two methods are now med commercially. A variety of fluoromicas were synthesized by isomorphic substitution including disilicic, trisilicic, and tetrasilicic. Fluorophlogopite, KMg3AlSi3O10F2, is the fluoromica most widely used. While most of the fluoromicas are completely stable to water, many water-swelling fluoromicas and fluoromontmorrilonoids were synthesized. Single crystals or film of the fluorine micas were grown to 2 inches or more by a number of methods, but none has as yet proved economical. In the report, detailed data and descriptions are given on compositions, syntheses, products, and uses, and on the properties including physical, dielectric, chemical, X-ray, optical, and structural.

The objective of this contract was to review the results of the Rushton Mining experiment in work organization and design, to explore the extension of knowledge gained from Rushton to other underground coal mines, and to conduct a search for a potential mine site for a demonstration project. The primary focus of the contract was on a search process to provide the research team with the opportunity to evaluate the different potential experimental sites, in order to select one or more with the highest potential for success. This search process also provides the various levels of union and company officials the opportunity to fully understand the context of the research before making a decision on whether to participate. While the search project failed in its attempt to locate a specific mine site, the research team believes that this is not a rejection of the actual project but rather extreme caution because of the uncertainty within the UMWA.

During research on mainly the weathering of kimberlite, it became evident that its mineralogical composition is an important factor in the complex process of physical and chemical disintegration. The mineralogy of tuffisitic kimberlite breccias from two localities, the Cullinan and Venetia mines, is compared with special reference to the occurrence of associated clay minerals. The clay mineral composition influences the engineering properties of these rock types. It is illustrated how the presence of swelling clay components can be confirmed by ethylene glycol treatment and chlorite minerals by heat treatment using X-ray diffraction. Smectites are present in both tuffisitic kimberlites, dominant at Venetia while chlorite is more frequent at Cullinan. More tuffisitic kimberlite breccias samples from venetia were also characterized. It was found that kimberlite disintegration is correlated with the presence and abundance of smectite.

Introduction Any person concerned with the welfare of mining in British Columbia cannot help being perturbed by the fact that the industry, to an alarming extent, is living on its capital. The great majority of mines and mining camps of today represent a heritage handed down by the prospectors of yesterday. It is true that mining engineers, geologists, mineral dressers, metallurgists, and their fellow scientists and engineers have played an honourable, indeed a vital, part in he1ping to make our producing mines, often after costly and extensive underground development and extended researches. It is also true that the mineralization at the Sullivan, Britannia, and Copper Mountain mines was all discovered before the turn of the century. Likewise the Cariboo, Bridge River, Hedley, Ymir, Rossland, Boundary, Slocan, Salmo, and Portland Canal mining areas, although they had not all been developed, were all known more than fifty years ago. Furthermore, every one of these camps owed its discovery and eventual exploitation to the fact that encouraging &apos; mineralization occurred at the surface. Where would the mining industry of British Columbia be today had those precious outcrops been buried beneath twenty to forty feet of glacial drift or other overburden? Anybody familiar with the geology and geography of British Columbia will probably agree that finding new mining camps is going to be an increasingly difficult and costly business: disappointments there will be in abundance. Nevertheless, most persons will probably also agree that other valuable mines and even mining camps await discovery by those who will prove resourceful and lucky enough to unearth them. It has become increasingly obvious to the authors of this paper that any new too1s which can aid either prospectors or engineers in their search for new orebodies should be welcome. This paper outlines our efforts to develop biogeochemistry and related techniques to the point where they may be considered as useful tools in the search for hidden mineralization.

Whether the mining engineer is concerned with stress problems in a mine at depth, the development of a new drill bit, or the efficiency of a comminution process, the mechanical properties of the rock with which he must work are of the utmost importance. One of the most popular topics in rock mechanics circles today is ?Is it possible to utilize directly parameters determined from laboratory tests on rock specimens in the analysis of mining engineering problems?? It is the author&apos;s opinion that laboratory and .field investigations have not yet reached the stage of development where this question can be answered with any degree of certainty. At present, great difficulties are involved in applying the results of laboratory tests to a mining engineering problem. However, this is due in part to the lack of detailed measurements of stress and deformation in the field and in part to the lack of development of satisfactory structural theories to correlate laboratory and field measurements. Furthermore, if mechanical properties measured in the laboratory are to be directly applied to the analysis of mining engineering problems, the critical mechanical properties must be identified, reliable test procedures must be developed and extensive test programs must be carried out.

Much has been said and written about the world&apos;s, and particularly the united states of America&apos;s, energy crisis. The relative changes between cost components of production have altered because the days of cheap energy have now gone. Decisions that made capital investment reduction attractive to treat large tonnage lower grade ore bodies appear to be no longer valid because average energy costs for comminution that were less than 1 cent per kilowatt hour in 1972, are now more than 3 cents and will shortly become 6 cents according to some projections. Increased capital investment to improve processing energy efficiencies are certainly going to be pursued. Energy today is the largest cost component in the average mineral production facility. It takes more than 12000 kilowatt hours to produce one ton of finished steel and more than 60000 kilowatt hours for each ton of copper and aluminum.
