"In conventional flotation, fluoride ions selectively would react with the aluminum site on the microcline surface and produce negative charged sites for amine to be adsorbed (Smith, 1976). According to this view, aluminum site is considered as a key feature in feldspar flotation. Generally, fluoride ion has been widely used as a modifying agent in silicate flotation. Since O'Meara's patent appeared on HF -amine reagent system to selectively float feldspar from quartz in 1942, relatively few contributions have been devoted in this issue. The reason might be that the process works very well, and accordingly there is no initiative to investigate in this area. However, due to the awareness of international community to restrict using of hazardous reagents like HF, sound engineering practice to search for alternative methods, not utilizing HF, has been launched. Inspection of literature, one can find several works dealing with this issue.In this contribution, the effect of ethoxylation of long chain alcohols on the quartz and feldspar flotation behaviors was investigated for surfactants of the octylphenol polyoxyethylene family. The tests were carried out with an average of 7.5 (Triton X 114), 9.5 (Triton X 100), 30 (Triton X305), 40 (Triton X 405) and 70 (TritonX 705) oxyethylene units. Electrokinetic and flotation studies on quartz have shown that at low pH values, quartz could be floated with polyoxyethylene octytlphenols. The possible mode of adsorption of these nonionic surfactants may be suggested to be due to hydrogen bonding between the oxygen of ether and hydrogen in the free hydroxyl groups on quartz surface. It was anticipated that the selectivity between quartz and microcline would decrease as oxyethylenic chain length increases."

This paper describes the in-situ performance of two IFS powered support installations at Betws and Penallta Collieries in the South Wales Coalfield, United Kingdom. Intensive monitoring of all powered support functions, strata movement, support/strata interaction and coal seam disturbance permitted an extensive evaluation of powered support performance for all periods of the mining cycle. The influence of support design, support rating, face design, proximate strata and scam section upon support and operating performance are discussed. In-situ performance is compared to design specification and to the requirements of Production Instruction 1982/6. Aspects which show significant variation are highlighted. Particular attention is drawn to the precise analysis of support/strata interaction in the form of canopy and base loading profiles. This illustrates the influence of support rating and configuration in determining the interaction of the canopy and base with the proximate strata. Extensometric monitoring of the coalface highlights the potential zones of disturbance within the seam which allied with support position monitoring provides an accurate basis for theoretical considerations of support loading. Conclusions are drawn, the application of which may enhance the performance and operation of IFS supports in thin to medium sections.

One phase of Bureau of lines work in health and safety is promotion of the use of safe, satisfactory, and reliable respiratory protective devices. To insure that devices embodying these features will be available the Bureau has established schedules of minimum requirements for oxygen breathing apparatus, gas masks4/, supplied-air respirators (hose mask, air-line respirators, and abrasive blasting helmet hoods, or masks)5/, and dispersoid (dust, fume and mist) respirators6/. Approval test, of oxygen¬-breathing apparatus are conducted by the Safety Division; approval tests of other types of respiratory protective equipment are conducted by the Health Division. These divisions comprise the Health and Safety Branch.

The project investigated regional impacts of mining on the ground water system of the Powder River Basin by: 1) establishment of a regional ground water monitoring network, and 2)development of , set of digital computer models to simulate ground water flow and quality, ground water contributions to surface water flow and quality (i.e., baseflow), and watershed run-off and recharge. Over 100 wells were monitored for physical and chemical parameters. Data were used as input to the model; and for the development of a comprehensive data base. The basin was modeled on a regional and subregional scale using a finite -difference model employing an alternating difference technique. Two water-shed models were evaluated for their ability to provide runoff and recharge inputs to the basic ground water model. Application of the regional and subregional models using conservative mining scenarios showed that drawdowns may extend west from the mines as far as ten miles but that impacts would be insignificant on a regional scale. The watershed model could be effectively applied to small watersheds only.

This bulletin summarizes the work conducted under the Bureau of Mines methane control research program during the years 1964 to 1979. This research effort was directed toward improving existing methods and developing alternative methods of reducing the explosion hazard during mining. The research was performed in three general areas: (1) basic factors that control the emission of methane into coal mines, (2) methane control during mining, and (3) methane drainage in advance of mining. Topics discussed in this bulletin include the magnitude of the methane problem; the equipment and instruments developed; the geological, chemical and physical parameters that control the movement of methane in coalbeds; the direct method of determining gas content; the estimates of gas content from adsorption data; and methane drainage, through shafts, through horizontal boreholes, through vertical boreholes, or through slant holes. Improvements in ventilation, control of methane in gob areas, and water infusion are also discussed, as is the potential use of coalbed methane as a supplement to natural gas supplies. This bulletin provides a comprehensive source of information on the accomplishments of the Bureau's methane control research program, on the technology developed, and on the direction of further research.

"The Brunswick Mine ore requires fine grinding to achieve liberation of minerals. With 25mm slugs as the grinding media in the ball mill, there was a limitation of a P80 of 25 microns on the CuPb regrind circuit. Results from pilot plant testing showed that the separation efficiency could be increased through fine grinding with a P80 of 15 microns.Options considered were the capital expenditure for new fine grinding equipment such as a vertimill or the use of the present ball mill equipment with smaller media. The Wheelabrator Allevard Enterprise (WAE) millpebs product was chosen because it was a smaller media with a distribution of steel pellets between 5 to 12 mm.With millpebs the grinding product was reduced in size from a P80 of 25 microns to a P80 of less than 19 microns. The power draw to achieve the finer grind was 13% lower while the media consumption was 57% higher.The millpebs grinding media was also tested on the zinc regrind mill. The purpose of the trial was to understand what the media consumption and power draw would be with the charge lowered to achieve an equivalent grind as obtained with the slugs. The media consumption was approximately the same and the power draw was reduced by 30%.INTRODUCTIONThe Brunswick Mine ore is a complex Pb-Zn-Cu-Ag sulphide ore with the grain size of the minerals varying from submicron blebs to particles up to several mm in size. The ore is ground progressively finer in stages. The first step of grinding occurs in the SAG mill circuit. The product sizing 80% passing 95 microns is fed to the CuPb prefloat stage (Cormier et al 2002). The tails from the prefloat is then further ground to a P80 of 35 microns for the CuPb rougher flotation. The final liberation for the CuPb circuit takes place in the CuPb regrind circuit. The regrinding mill further liberates the cleaner scavenger concentrate, second cleaner tails and third cleaner tails. The reasoning for the progressive grinding is to achieve fine grinding without having galena over ground due to its high specific gravity that preferentially sends it to the cyclone underflow."

Durability risks for underground facilities can be underestimated during design phase as compared to well-known geological risks. However, unclear durability requirements can result in construction schedule delay and change orders. Unlike bridges or buildings, a unified underground durability code or standard does not exist. This paper will provide a durability approach for underground facilities, including degradation modes, mitigations, and compliance measures during construction. In addition, this paper will address how to clearly specify durability requirements in a contract document to reduce disputes during construction and discuss key durability tests that are time consuming and will impact construction schedule if not timely planned.

The real gross national product (GNP) expanded by 2.3% during the second quarter, down from the anomalous 4.4% growth rate in the previous 3 months. If the expansion continues through October, it will have lasted 5 yr and become the second longest in 40 yr.2 As in the first quarter, improvement in U.S. exports played a role in the continuing--albeit slow--growth. More than 2 yr of declines in the dollar relative to currencies of other industrial countries have contributed to a slight reduction in the trade deficit in real (volume) terms, as real net exports of goods and services rose $1.9 billion (table 1). Exports grew a strong 12.1% while imports, which had fallen the previous two quarters, rose 7.4%. Manufactured goods and petroleum products accounted for most of the second quarter import increase. The American Petroleum Institute estimates that the volume of crude oil and refined products imports in the first half of 1987 surpassed those in the same period last year by 7.5%, reflecting falling domestic production and higher than expected demand. Expenditure on durable goods--those that last at least 3 yr-by both consumers and producers also contributed to the second quarter expansion. Personal consumption of durable goods rose 9.0%, after having fallen the two previous quarters. Motor vehicle purchases accounted for most of the second quarter increase and the first quarter decrease. Sales of automobiles surged in the last quarter of 1986, as consumers rushed to capture the sales tax deduction that was eliminated on January 1. Sales fell in the first quarter of 1987, but have now moved closer to the trend line exhibited in the first three quarters of 1986. Automobiles accounted for half the 0.8% July gain in retail sales, and two-thirds of the 1.4% June gain. Producers durable equipment purchases also rose this quarter, accounting for the increase in nonresidential fixed investment.

Environmental Considerations With significant increases in bulk coal movements through terminals, operators are under constant social and political pressure to reduce or remove environmental pollution problems incidental to their operations. To meet these requirements, both equipment manufacturers and terminal designers are endeavoring to design equipment and systems with stringent environmental controls. The most challenging environmental problems facing coal terminal designers and developers are terminal siting restrictions, dust control, and noise abatement. Terminal Siting Finding a suitable site can be a difficult problem because of public concern over coal dust or the impact of a terminal on the surrounding community or natural habitat of the area. Often the only suitable flat land available for terminal development is on a tidal estuary or salt water marsh with great environmental value. In many cases a period of four to six years of full environmental and social assessment has been needed. A recent example of such difficulties is the expansion at Roberts Bank, British Columbia, where environmental impact assessment studies and their public review took almost six years from initial expansion applications until the time of approval. Dust Control Modern coal terminal dust control techniques usually consist of water sprays at strategic locations to suppress dust. The application points include rail car or barge dumper, main conveyor transfers, perimeter sprays around stockpiles, stacker/reclaimer, ship-loader transfers, and loading spout. The water sprays may include a chemical wetting agent or surfactant to reduce the water requirement and increase effectiveness. Recently there have been advances with development of effective micro foam agglomerating agents. In these systems, a micro foam with very small bubble sizes is sprayed into the coal stream. The foam fills the interstices between coal particles and wets the coal fines. These systems have proven to be very effective and usually one application before stockpiling and one upon reclaiming will markedly reduce the coal dusting. Stockpile perimeter sprays can be operated either manually or at the sophisticated terminal, actuated by a computerized control system that senses key environmental conditions such as humidity, precipitation, and wind velocity. Most modern terminals collect the drainage from the stockpile area, remove the solids in settling basins, then recirculate the water to reduce water requirements and effluents from the site. Dusting of long-term storage stockpiles can be reduced by spraying the piles with chemical resin or latex binding compounds to seal the surface. These compounds also can minimize erosion of the pile by rainfall. Dust collection with air evacuation systems and cyclone or wet scrubbers can be used at key areas such as rail car dumpers, main conveyor transfers, and ship-loader spouts. The trend in dust control is away from dust collection since most dust collectors are high maintenance items requiring good operator supervision and servicing. Coal handling conveyors are usually open and uncovered. However, in areas requiring special attention they may be covered or even completely enclosed. Dust generation from terminal roads is often a significant amount of the total dust emitted from a terminal. To reduce this dusting, roadways where traffic is heavy can be paved or sprayed by water trucks. Speed limits can be enforced and use of tracked mobile equipment for stockpile handling rather than rubber-tired loaders is encouraged by authorities. Noise Abatement Terminals located close to residential areas are often faced with noise control problems. Noise can be one of the most difficult environmental problems to solve. Usually, use of electrically-powered equipment is encouraged to reduce noise levels. Rail car dumper houses can be totally enclosed to reduce both dust and noise emissions. Groundfall accidents have been the leading cause of fatalities in the underground coal mining industry for many years. Statistics from the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) indicate that approximately half of the victims of these fatal accidents were in an area where no devices had been installed to support the mine's roof. This report was prepared by the U.S. Bureau of Mines to summarize the opinions of 268 coal miners, 29 rust-line supervisors, and 30 MSHA inspectors concerning why people go under unsupported roof, and how to prevent this behavior. Interviews were conducted at six minesites.

When the Organic Act of 1910 established the Bureau of Mines within the Department of the Interior, the Bureau's programs involved only health and safety research and education, and fuels testing. As the Federal Government's primary agency for research in minerals, the Bureau has expanded its scientific and technological investigations to mining, processing minerals substances, eliminating occupational health and safety hazards in the mineral industries, economic development, and resource conservation. Today, Bureau activities cover a broad spectrum of programs for meeting the diverse (and sometimes conflicting) needs of mineral industries, government, and the public. In the 1960's, the Bureau initiated programs to resolve environmental problems associated with past mining and mineral processing. In the 1970's, the energy crisis raised the national consciousness concerning our limited supplies of domestic mineral and fuel resources. Dependence on foreign sources of raw materials critical to our national economy and competition from other countries for these world supplies stimulated the need to conserve and use with intelligence the Nation's minerals, metals, and fuels.

Within the mining industry, the pathway from exploration, to planning, construction, operation and closure has become more complex over the last few decades. The current financial, environmental and social influences present the mining industry with unprecedented challenges and opportunities. In addition, international environmental and social reporting standards and codes are becoming increasingly robust. The reporting requirements provide an added impetus for issuers to effectively manage environmental and social impacts and risks. Reporting requirements also provide the opportunity to be transparent. The intended audience for these Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) Guidelines for Mineral Resource and Mineral Reserve Estimation includes practitioners, industry participants at all levels of skill and experience, corporate management and board members, government agencies, academic institutions and interested parties. For practitioners, this document provides underlying key principles of environmental, social and governance practices. The ESG Guidelines provide guidance for those using environmental, social, governmental and governance information when preparing and implementing mineral exploration programs and contributing to the preparation of mineral resource and mineral reserve estimates for mineral properties that are either at the study stage (i.e., scoping / preliminary economic assessment, pre-feasibility, or feasibility studies) or in operation. The guidelines can also be used to help mineral resource and mining companies apply good practice to manage their environmental and social risks and opportunities. Companies can identify and retain appropriate professionals to prepare environmental and social materials to support company studies. The guidelines are also a resource for companies developing effective environmental and social management strategies at any project stage. This document is not intended to be prescriptive and is not intended to provide exhaustive guidance on what to consider in terms of environmental, social, legal and governmental modifying factors in the preparation of MRMR estimates. Rather, it is intended as general guidance to assist companies and practitioners in considering and applying these modifying factors for MRMR estimates. This document is also not intended to guide environmental and social impact assessment (ESIA); however, the measures needed to manage impacts help inform the constraints and costs for defining mineral resources and mineral reserves and inform the costs and schedules of mineral project studies. All documentation of MRMR estimates made by an issuer and intended to be, or reasonably likely to be, made available to the public in a jurisdiction of Canada must comply with the requirements of National Instrument 43-101 Standards of Disclosure for Mineral Projects (NI 43-101), as amended from time to time (Canadian Securities Administrators, 2016a and 2016b). Disclosure is not addressed in these ESG Guidelines. Determination of what to include in disclosures is defined in the applicable Securities’ legal frameworks. Appendix A presents a summary table showing the linkage of the principles and topics in these ESG Guidelines to the potential effects on project costs, schedules, government permits and approvals, social licence to operate and financing.

Controlled recirculation of ventilation air in underground metal and nonmetal mines has the potential to improve airflow and the health and safety of miners when implemented properly. Previous research by Robinson, Marks, Cecala and others concluded that the success of a district recirculation system is predicated upon an adequate supply of fresh air and the use of a reliable monitoring system for safe operation. This recent research also showed that contaminant levels will not exceed pre-recirculation levels, and that district recirculation can improve the dilution of face contaminants, especially methane gas. To illustrate the process of implementing controlled recirculation and also to promote and give guidance to mine operators in consideration of this tool to improve mine airflow, Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (OMSHR) researchers acquired baseline airflow and contaminant data from a multi-level room-and-pillar nonmetal mine and used commercial ventilation network software to simulate base case conditions and recirculation of mine air. Mine return air baseline contaminants of dust and diesel particulate matter were at lower levels than intake air, providing the potential for improved face air quality. A ventilation model implementing controlled recirculation was developed and analyzed, showing an increase in air quantity at the face, improved intake air quality, and contaminant exposure levels below those set by statutory requirements. These results, along with conclusions reached by previous researchers, provide the basis for examining the safe and effective implementation of controlled recirculation in metal and nonmetal underground mines using this mine as an example.

The objectives of this study were to examine a representative cross section of formal safety analysis techniques developed for the nuclear and aerospace industries, to recommend those methods that would be suitable for application to the mining industry, and to include those methods in a user's manual. Volume II of this report, the user's manual, describes several methods that were determined to be immediately transferrable to the mining industry. The handbook gives detailed instructions on appropriate application and utilization of the methods. Other techniques will require further development before they can be effectively transferred to the mining industry.

The STATE MINERAL SUMMARIES publication provides estimated data and summaries of mineral activities at the State level for 1993. Most of the estimates are based on nine months data. Individual State summaries are published separately as State Mineral Industry Surveys and copies can be obtained from the appropriate State mineral officer. In an effort to facilitate the rapid dissemination of information and publications produced by the U.S. Bureau of Mine, an electronic document dissemination system is now available for use. MINES FaxBack is a simple-to-operate automated fax response system that operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week. All a user needs is access to a fax machine with a touch-tone telephone. "INTRODUCTION The use of scrap mica as an industrial raw material has grown rapidly during the past two decades. Demands by various industries for ground mica for use in the roofing, paint, rubber, plastics, and wallpaper trades as well as for less extensive uses in insulation, oil-well drilling, welding, pipeline enamel, decorative material, and for other purposes exceed present (1947) supplies.A small proportion of the raw material used comes from the Black Hills of South Dakota, where casual recovery has been practiced in the exploitation of pegnatite deposits for more valuable minerals. The annual production of scrap mica in the Black Hills for the years 1939 to 1946 is shown in figure 19. 4/Although small, this production of scrap mica materially augments the incomes of numerous operators.Volume production of mica would offer attractive opportunities for obtaining steady and more economical supplies of the rare minerals as byproducts. Appreciable supplies of beryl, lithia minerals, sheet mica, tantalite-columbite, and cassiterite could accrue. Furthermore, a stable scrap-mica production would complement the production of quality feldspar, for which the Black Hills pegmatites are noted, and would help balance the economy of pegmatite mineral production.Mechanical methods of separation are requisite to production of enough scrap mica to be generally profitable. Various phases of the characteristics end treatment of mica have been investigated by the Bureau of Mines. A bibliography of these reports is appended.In 1945 the Bureau of Mines conducted pilot-plant tests to recover scrap mica by selective screening of crushed pegmatite. More recently the problem has boon studied in the Pegmatite Research Laboratory to aid in developing technological methods by which scrap mica may be separated from crushed pegmatite."

This study, funded by the U. S. Bureau of Mines, describes: (1) all recent restoration attempts at commercial in situ leach operations, (2) restoration costs reported by the industry, (3) empirical equations that predict the amount of groundwater flushing required to meet the current restoration criteria, and (4) in situ uranium permit requirements for the states of Texas, Wyoming, New Mexico, Utah, Montana, Colorado and South Dakota, and Federal requirements.

We look at the empirical evidence of coal block auctions in India to understand how competitive intensity affects the bid amounts in common value auctions. The results suggest that competitive intensity measured through the number of bidders for a coal block is instrumental in determining the bidding outcomes. The presence of higher numbers of bidders in the auction leads to higher bids - every additional bidder causes the bid amount to rise by INR 142.67 per tonne of coal for auctions studied for 127 coal blocks from 2014 to 2023. The paper also examines the moderating and mediating effect of competition on bids and on excess of bids from the comparative market price of coal from alternative source of Coal India Limited. The results indicate that competitive intensity does not have statistically significant impact on the relationship between common value of coal blocks and bids, neither as a moderator nor as a mediator. The strategic behavior of the bidders has also been observed as bidders have been seen to bid in a higher than market price in order to outbid the competitors.
