The main purpose behind this preliminary study was the reduction of costs while maintaining productivity. Finding a way to achieve this balance without compromising controls on safety and quality of blasting results is of continual interest to the mining industry and of particular interest when ore of lower grade is being mined.

This paper describing the mining practices at the Old Dominion mine, Globe, Ariz., is one of a series being prepared by the United States Bureau of Mines on mining practices, methods, and costs in the various minim districts in the United States. The Old Dominion mine is situated in the eastern port of the Globe-Miami district, about 1-1/2 miles north from the center of the town of Globe. An average of nearly: 1,200 tons per day was mined during 1928. The prevent production is about 1,500 tons per day; of this amount,, approximately 100 tons is direct-smelting ore that is shipped to the smelter at Miami and 1,400 tons milling ore which is treated in the company?s concentrator at Globe. About 600 men are employed at the mine.

"This paper is intended as a review of the progress that has been made in the Province of Ontario in the field of acid drainage waste treatment technology.Three years ago, at the Third Annual Meeting of the Canadian Mineral Processors, we presented a paper entitled ""The Problem of Acid Mine Drainage in Ontario"". At that time I was working for the Ontario Water Resources Commission. The paper turned out to be the very beginning of the Commission's acid mine drainage control program. In the intervening three years, the Ontario Water Resources Commission has been amalgamated with other government groups and has evolved into the present Ontario Ministry of the Environment. Today the Ministry is involved in running one of the most advanced acid mine waste control programs in the world.As a part of its mining program, the Ontario Ministry of the Environment has published three major reports which deal directly and specifically with the industrial waste disposal problems that may arise at a mining operation. In order of publication, these reports are as follows:(1) ""The Problem of Acid Mine Drainage in the Province of Ontario"".This 338-page report covers all aspects of the problem of acid mine drainage and includes detailed sections on acid flow detection, acid flow chemistry and acid flow treatment.(2) ""The Use, Characteristics and Toxicity of Mine-Mill Reagents in the Province of Ontario"".This report, 244 pages in length, gives the chemistry and toxicity of nearly all of the chemicals that find common use in the Canadian mining industry. Most of the toxicity figures quoted are the result of a comprehensive bioassay program that was initiated by the Ministry."

[The quantity of explosives sold in the United States in January, 1931, for domestic consumption, amounted to 368,100 kegs (9,202,510 pounds) of black blasting powder, 4,810;000 pounds of permissible explosives, and 16,533,000 pounds of high explosives other than permissible. These figures are based on reports received by the United States Bureau of Mines, Department of Commerce, from nearly all manufacturing companies, and include an estimate of sues by several companies that do not furnish monthly reports. Reports actually received from manufacturers shored sales of 365,977 kegs of black blasting powder (consisting of 220,892 kegs of granular powder and 145,085 kegs of pellet powder), 4,687,900 pounds of permissible explosives, and 15,498,152 pounds of high explosives other than permissible. Sales in January, 1931, were smaller than in January last year, the decreases being 14 per cent for black blasting powder, 19 per cent for permissible, and 17 per cent for high explosives other than permissible. Sales in January 1931 when compared with soles in December 1930, show increases for all three classes of explosives as follows: 2 per cent for block blasting powder, 16 per cent for permissible explosives, and 7 per cent for other high explosives. PERMISSIBLE EXPLOSIVES: Of the 4,687,900 hounds of permissible reported sold during January, 97 per cent was used for coal-mining operations, Including 32 per cent for anthracite mines and 65 per cent for bituminous mines. The following Staten were the largest users of permissible explosives daring January: Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Illinois, Alabama, Kentucky, Indiana, and Utah. Their combined sales represented 89 per cent of the entire sales reported for this class of explosives.]

The 32nd annual American Hall of Fame Awards Banquet and Fundraiser, sponsored by the Mining Foundation of the Southwest (MFSW), will be held at the JW Marriott Tucson Starr Pass Resort & Spa on Saturday, Dec. 6, 2014. Each year, one living Hall of Fame inductee, up to three Medal of Merit recipients, honorees from mining?s past, and recipients of an Industry Partnership Award and a Special Citation are recognized for their respective contributions to the mining industry. Armine Frederick Ban?eld Jr., past chairman and founder of Mintec, Inc. located in Tucson, AZ, will be honored as the 2014 Hall of Fame Inductee at the awards banquet. Banfield founded Mintec from his Tucson apartment in 1970 and expanded it to a global operation. Under his guidance, Mintec won the 2013 President?s E-Award for Exports ? the highest recognition any United States company may receive for making a significant contribution to the expansion of U.S. exports. Medals of Merit will be awarded to Corale L. and James A. Brierley, founder and principal of Brierley Consultancy LLC; David Nicholas of Call and Nicholas Inc. and Scott M. Shields of Joy Global. The Brierleys are being recognized for their true scientific partnership with parallel achievements in academia and in business development. Nicholas is being recognized as the co-founder of Call & Nicholas and for his noted expertise in mining geotechnical engineering. San Juan Coal Co. (SJCC) operates an underground coal mine near Farmington, NM. Continuous miners and a longwall produce 6.3 to 7.2 Mt/a (7 million to 8 million stpy). SJCC is owned and operated by BHP Billiton. The coal seam at SJCC has been shown to have a propensity for spontaneous combustion. As such, during the feasibility study for this project, it was elected to use a bleederless ventilation system on the longwall. Due to the combination of spontaneous combustion, methane liberation and, to a lesser extent, hydrogen sulfide, a typical wraparound ventilation system would not be appropriate. Three-entry gate roads are developed, and the longwall gob is sealed as mining progresses. SJCC uses a nitrogen injection system to continuously inertize the gob.

Industries in the Kwinana area have embarked on a journey of improving the eco-efficiency of Western AustraliaÆs primary heavy industry area. The Kwinana Industrial Area has some unique characteristics that provide both opportunities and barriers. The Kwinana Industries Council and the Chamber of Commerce and Industry are working with the industries to identify a range of projects that can deliver improvements for both environmental and economic æbottom linesÆ, and to progress these projects using internal and external resources. The evolution of the process, its relationship to the ethos of operating companies, and the availability of resources to pursue projects, is an interesting study with lessons for others interested in taking the same course.

Currently, two multispectral remote sensing satellites are providing regular data over New Zealand; aircraft scanner services are available from Australia.; operational radar satellite services are yet to materialise. The advantages and disadvantages of the various data types are compared and contrasted. Some image processing considerations are outlined.

"Pitting corrosion inhibition of 304 stainless steel (SS) in groundwater with a ternary inhibitor mixture (phosphonic acid + bivalent cation + various surfactants) was studied with different environmental variables such as temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen and chloride ions. Critical pitting potential and corrosion potential were calculated for these test media using electrochemical techniques. Under the tested condition, the localized corrosion resistance of 304 SS was determined and the results are discussed. IntroductionPitting corrosion of metals and alloys is a major cause of failure in chemical processing desalination plants, scrubber for flue gas desulphurization (FGD) plants, water storage tanks and pipelines, petroleum refineries, etc.Heat exchangers and condensers in inland thermal and nuclear powerplants utilize groundwater as a coolant, but materials of construction are generally prone to localized corrosion.Localized corrosion attack can be initiated when the passive film on the metal is disrupted. The presence of certain aggressive anions such as chlorides (Cl-) can migrate to the actively corroding area and stabilize pitting corrosion. Attention has been focussed on improving the resistance of stainless steel against localizedcorrosion in aqueous environments.One of the most accepted methods of avoiding corrosion is by the addition of chemicals (inhibitors). Over the past two decades, some phosphonic acids have been explored due to their good corrosion inhibition efficiency and low toxicity (Fang et al., 1993; Karman et al., 1998; Rajendran et al., 1998; Gopi and Rajeswari, 2000a). Bivalent cations like Zn2+ are often applied as additives to inhibit the metal dissolution (Sekine and Hirakawa, 1986; Aruna Bahadur, 1998)."

Better slag valorization is part of improving the sustainability of steel, stainless steel and non- ferrous metal production processes. Besides, it can improve the sustainability of other products and production processes as well. A sound and well established slag valorization is beneficial for the overall economics, marketing and appreciation of the metallurgical process and its products. On 6-7 April 2009, the First International Slag Valorisation Symposium was held in Leuven, Belgium. This paper gives a brief summary of the symposium, providing an overview of slag valorization opportunities. The authors believe that high temperature process slags can have interesting applications and that within the next 10 to 20 years slags will need such valorization options in order to compete with other materials and get general support for further production. On the other hand, the authors also expect a higher demand for slags for the production of various materials. High temperature processes should anticipate on the growing opportunities for valorization of slags and increase the resilience of their process by better understanding slag processing, slag quality and material requirements. More interdisciplinary research efforts are required to reach this level of knowledge for the different high temperature processes. Such an interdisciplinary research platform was recently established at KULeuven, Belgium, named SMART-PRO2 (Sustainable Materialization of Residues from Thermal Processes into Products).

Geologists, engineers, technicians and surveyors have successfully utilized technical software in the mining industry for over 30 years. Software for processing survey, geology, mine engineering and planning information make these functions more efficient by automating repetitive tasks and reducing data processing errors. While these systems have been improved incrementally overtime, new systems that represent giant leaps in technology have been introduced to help mining operations increase productivity and reduce costs. However, their widespread use within the industry has left individual companies without a competitive advantage. Additionally, the ability of these applications to provide the productivity improvements required in today’s uncertain market conditions has since peaked. The next wave of technology—integration of independent software applications—is just starting to emerge and will have a significant effect on the productivity of mining operations. To reap the productivity gains required to remain competitive, mining companies must exploit the collective knowledge and experience of every employee in the organization. Integration of independent software application allows companies to leverage information from all activities, enabling staff to make better decisions to improve productivity. This paper outlines the importance of integration as productivity enabler. Key performance indicators, strategic mine planning, resources management and mine-to-mill integration are discussed as processes that enable productivity. The Gemcom Enterprise Mining System (GEMS)is introduced as the industry’s first integrated solution that enables these productive processes. The paper concludes with a comment on the level of change required to realize the benefits of integration.

Cortez Gold Mines completed a feasibility study for a new openpit gold mine in north central Nevada. The production schedule calls for a peak in material movement. This schedule is based on current operational efficiencies and equipment parameters observed at the company’s existing openpit operation. To mitigate risks of over/under predicting production, simulation modeling was used to validate the loading and haulage requirements during the peak production period. The advantage of simulation is the ability to provide a realistic model of a mining operation based on scheduled and unscheduled random events during the period under analysis.

"A practical new test has been developed for SAG hardness determination. Using two kilogram samples of minus one inch diamond drill core or crushed muck samples, the Starkey SAG Test has been shown to give accurate predictive information which directly relates to on-stream SAG mill performance. Typical results and test criteria are discussed in the paperAchievements to date include:• Identification of hardness profiles and the location of hard and soft zones in a large ore body.• Accurate prediction of the hardness of a bulk sample by using an adjacent diamond drill hole.• Derivation of a plotted curve relating pilot plant power to laboratory relative hardness.• Demonstration that for every test done to date, the Starkey SAG Test produced a product size distribution identical to that produced in a pilot plant or full scale plant SAG operation.This test can now be used for blast hardness monitoring and short term control of mine production in existing plants and for identifying the proper locations for bulk samples in new projects. In addition, new SAG mill design can now be rationalized in a low cost way to eliminate unforeseen production shortfalls.IntroductionThis paper is presented to introduce the Starkey SAG Test, a practical new laboratory tool for measuring the relative hardness of small ore samples in a semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) environment. The test was first designed for use on diamond drill core samples during the prefeasibility stage of new mining projects, to provide new information about the ore body at reasonable cost. It is a new tool and does not replace existing pilot plant test requirements.The test will also be useful for throughput prediction in existing SAG plants by assisting in short and long term mine planning, where forecasting of metal grades and milled tonnage is used to control mine profitability. The paper show how the inclusion of the uncertainty of the geology of the orebody into the mine planning and design process can be of great help, for the mine planner, in both assessing and quantifying the existing risk in the key project indicators such as DCF, and ore tonnage. This is achieved by using conditional simulation and Monte Carlo techniques which provide equally probable models of the original orebody model of the deposit. In this fashion, it is possible to assess the sensitivity of the pit design and related long-term production scheduling (cutbacks) to grade uncertainty.

Theoretical flotation models suggest that there is a positive relationship between bubble-particle collision rates and turbulent kinetic energy dissipation. Fine particle flotation performance is generally enhanced by increased collision frequency and hence higher energy dissipation. Contrarily, increased turbulence in the rotor-stator region is related to higher detachment frequency of the coarser size range. Therefore, the optimal modes of recovery for the 'fine' and 'coarse' size classes appear to be diametrically opposed. Industrial applications have previously confirmed that applying greater power to flotation slurries yields significant improvements in fine particle recovery. However, recovery of the coarser size class favours a different flotation environment. An improvement in the flotation kinetics of the fine and coarse size classes, provided there is no adverse metallurgical influence on the intermediate size ranges, is obviously beneficial to the overall recovery response. Managing the local turbulent kinetic energy dissipation, and hence the power imparted to the slurry, offers the benefit of targeting the particle size ranges exhibiting slower kinetics. FLSmidth recently introduced the practical implementation of this concept. In principle, it decouples flotation regimes where fine and coarse particles exhibit preferentially recovery. In the case of naturally aspirated machines (Wemco®), it is referred to as Hybrid Energy Flotation? and incorporates at least three phases: > Standard flotation machines (standard energy input, rotor speed (r/min), rotor size/type) at the beginning of the row, where flotation is typically froth-phase limited and operational and set-up parameters have a limited influence on the recovery > Higher-powered flotation machines (high rotor speed, high-power rotor size/type) at the end of the row to improve fine particle recovery > Lower-powered flotation machines (low rotor speed, low power rotor size/type) to enhance coarse particle recovery. A CFD-based flotation model is used to highlight the effect of turbulent dissipation energy on attachment and detachment rates. Preferential collection zones for fine, and 'coarse' particles are predicted for both forced-air and naturally aspirated machines. The greater predominance of UG2 ore types, coupled with the skewed feed distribution of platinum group metals (PGMs) to the finer size fractions, suggests that PGM flotation circuits are not designed for optimal recovery across the size distribution. The application of the hybrid energy concept to PGM flotation offers a possible shift towards a more efficient flotation circuit solution through a managed distribution of energy.

During an eight month period, January to August 1978, nine bore holes were drilled in the Mikonui River gravels. On account of two rebores required from near bottom, the number of bores is in effect 11. Just on 1300 feet were drilled with an average depth of 120 feet. Depth varied from 102 feet to 133 feet. Penetration on average per hole value, varied from 7.4 to 16.4 feet per day. Gold values were even more erratic. Drill rig used was the Keystone churn drill manufactured locally by the Dispatch Foundary. It is skid mounted and requires a crew of two persons.

The reaction between carbon and slags is of significant importance in direct smelting of iron ores, EAF slag foaming and copper slag cleaning processes. This reaction is known to occur via gaseous intermediates and it is important to have fundamental data to understand the relative importance of each reaction step. In this study, the rate of CO2dissociation on different slag surfaces is measured using an isotope exchange technique. It was found that increasing iron oxide content up to 30 wt per cent does not have a significant effect on the rate constant while increasing from this limit, increases the rate constant dramatically. Activation energy of CO2dissociation on slags of unit basicity and different iron oxide contents is in the range of 180±40 kJ/mol. It is found that rate constant dependence on oxygen potential in the slag phase is increasing with iron oxide concentration. In the case of copper making slags, the influence of copper oxide is found to increase the magnitude of apparent rate constant, while decreasing the activation energy considerably. "This paper examines the development of two new selective flocculation techniques for recovering KCI values from low grade carnallite potash ore.Direct recovery of KCI was achieved using one of two mid-range molecular weight polymers, one non-ionic and the other strongly cationic, in conjunction with the same selective anionic dispersant. From initial response studies on pure minerals and selective flocculation tests on synthetic mixtures, investigations were extended to recover KCI values from a natural carnallite potash ore. A single-stage process achieved products grading up to 61.3% KCI at recoveries up to 85.4% for the cationic flocculant suite and up to 64.8% KCI with recoveries as high as 90.3% for the non-ionic flocculant suite, with dispersant and flocculant dosages of 150-250gr1 and 10-75gr1, respectively. These results clearly demonstrate not only the feasibility of treating such problematic ores at low reagent dosages, but also the potential elimination of desliming prior to froth flotation.The experimental results presented are considered in terms of the reagent adsorption phenomena present in the system and various aspects of floe formation and cleaning.IntroductionAs high-grade sylvinite potash ores become scarce, lower grade sylvinite and carnallite potash ores are becoming more attractive. However, these ores often contain large amounts (up to 15% by weight) of water-insoluble slimes which must be removed prior to KC! flotation, owing to their high adsorptive capacity for the amine collectors used. The slimes are generally removed by scrubbing followed by hydroclassification and any residual material not eliminated is blinded with reagents such as guar gum or starch to inhibit interference in subsequent KC1 flotation.An alternative approach used commercially in Canada by Agrium Inc. involves water-insoluble slimes flotation prior to KC! flotation. In this process, the slimes are selectively flocculated and then separated by froth flotation. Losses of KC! to the slimes product and associated brine requirements are both reported to be less than those encountered in conventional desliming, but the technique is somewhat limited in its application at present."
