Underground coal mine tracked vehicles have been studied to determine the state of the art and how brakes might be added to the coal haulage cars. Specific areas of interest are: brake sys terns, couplers, car trucks and car handling procedures. Problems related to adding brakes to the haulage cars appear to be: the limited amount of room to mount the brakes on the cars, brake line connection between rotary dump cars, achieving desirable braking characteristics without over complicating the system and keeping the installation cost to a reasonable figure. This document combines the information contained in the first issue of the "State-of -the-Art of Underground Coal Mine Tracked Vehicle Brake Systems," BRL Report No. 6080, with that contained in a subsequent monthly report.

At the request of the War Production Board a preliminary examination of the Big Ben molybdenum prospect near Neihart, Cascade County, Mont., was made by the Bureau of Mines under G. N. Bennett, mining engineer, Bureau of Mines Montana district office, in September 1942. Formal investigation, consisting of sampling, core drilling, and metallurgical testing, was later undertaken and completed in 1943. Field work was directed by Robert D. O'Brien, mining engineer, Montana district office, under the supervision of E. W. Newman, supervising engineer, Montana district office. This report describes the deposit, presents the factual data obtained from the sampling and core-drilling operations, and summarizes the results of the metallurgical studies. The deposit was first located and prospected in 1922 by the present owner, Frank Mansikka of Neihart, Mont. Periodic examinations made by responsible mining interests were culminated in 1938 when the Federal Mining & Smelting Co. optioned and investigated the property. No ores have been produced from the deposit to date.

As the achieved results show for the first time in modern surface mining history mechanized cutting is capable to compete successfully against traditional drill, blast/ripping and other conventional mining methods.

THE history of mining in South Africa differs somewhat from that of other countries in the part taken by the aborigines in the development ?of the mineral deposits. The Spaniards in America, and the fortune-seekers of Australia and New Zealand, found large numbers of natives in these new countries, but the inhabitants did not become willing or efficient workers ill the mines which the white men started. The Kaffirs of South. Africa have not shown the same antipathy to labor, nor do they show any signs of dying out in the presence of the white man's civilization. They are a virile race, and so far the vices of civilization have not killed. them. While it is true that the brain and skill necessary for the exploitation of the mineral resources of this sub-continent-have been supplied by the white race, it is also a fact that most of the rough labor in the development of the mining industry of South Africa has been done by the Kaffirs. The Kaffir tribes differ greatly in their mental and physical capabilities. Compare, for instance, a Zulu of Natal with a Bechuana, or a Xosa of Cape Colony with some of the degenerate tribes of Central or East Africa, and you will find that they have little in common, save that their skin is black and that they do not believe in clothes. As a general rule, the tribe's in the milder, healthier climates are far superior, both in mind and body, to the Kaffirs brought up in the hot malarial sections of Central Africa; and it naturally follows that the black men from the temperate zones of the country, are much finer workmen than the degenerates from less favorable sections: It is universal in South Africa to speak. of the .Kaffirs as " boys." No matter if he is 90 years old, the Kaffir is always a " boy," and in this paper the word " boy " is synonymous with Kaffir.

Large structures in mines (faults, dykes, pillars, abutments) fail when the load exceeds the strength. If the loading system stiffness (LSS, also referred to as the ‘local mine stiffness’) is lower than the stiffness of the structure the failure will be unstable. The greater the difference between these stiffnesses, the greater the energy release during unstable failure. A method has been formulated by which the LSS is established through cost-effective numerical modelling while insight into the structure stiffness (source stiffness - SS) is provided by apparent stiffness, a parameter based on the empirical relation between seismic moment and radiated seismic energy of small seismic events from the area/volume of interest. By plotting LSS vs SS a ‘stiffness diagram’ is constructed that is useful for seismic hazard ranking of different structures. A comparative back-analysis of the Dagbreek fault in Welkom, South Africa, (source of the 1990 Matjhabeng earthquake) and two other nearby faults confirm the applicability of the method. An extension of the method, where ‘hazard magnitude’ is used as a measure of the LSS, allows a ‘stiffness diagram’ to be constructed using seismic data only. Une méthode a été formulée selon laquelle le LSS est établi par modélisation numérique rentable, tandis que la raideur de la structure (SS – raideur de la source) est établie par la raideur apparente, un paramètre basé sur la relation empirique entre le moment sismique et l’énergie sismique radiée de petits moments sismiques dans l’aire/volume en question. On trace le « diagramme de raideur » en relevant les deux mesures (LSS et SS), ce qui est utile pour classer les risques sismiques de structures différentes. On vérifie l’applicabilité de la méthode en comparant la faille de Welkom, Afrique du Sud (foyer du séisme de Matjhabeng en 1990) avec deux autres failles proches. Une extension de cette méthode, dans laquelle on utilise la « magnitude du risque » comme mesure du LSS, permet de construire le « diagramme de raideur » avec des données sismiques seulement. Durch das Kartograpahieren der LSS in Bezug auf die SS wird ein `Steifheitsdiagramm ' konstruiert, welches für seismische Gefahrklassifizierung der unterschiedlichen Strukturen nützlich ist. Eine vergleichende Postanalyse der Dagbreek Verwerfung in Welkom, Südafrika, (Zentrum des Matjhabeng Erdbebens 1990) und in zwei anderen nahe gelegenen Verwerfungen bestätigen die Anwendbarkeit der Methode. Surface mining operations typically require run-of-mine material to be sized for further processing. In-pit crushing facilities serve this need, as stationary, semi-mobile or fully mobile units. Although in particular fully mobile crushing facilities have been in use for over half of a century, other surface mining techniques have typically been implemented. However, with increasing operating costs in truck and shovel operations, and other economic considerations, mobile crushing plants are increasingly a viable option. The operational and economical parameters in relation to the optimal surface mining equipment selection will be reviewed. The role of the mobile crushing technology within the continuous vs. noncontinuous surface mining operation and basis for mine planning are also discussed. Current applications and respective case studies will be reviewed. Key performance indicators will be presented. These performance parameters can be viewed as a tool to aid in the equipment selection process. The future direction for further research and development in mobile crushing facilities will also be presented.

Although every structural blasting project presents special challenges, this undertaking was most notable for its unusually unique structural design, tight clearances, and high risk to adjacent structures.

BASED on their analyses of growth kinetics, ibbs' and Harris et al.' have recently proposed that the rate of subcritical graphitization of steel is controlled by the rate of diffusion of carbon in ferrite. illert has concluded that this is the rate controlling growth mechanism when the growing graphite particles are relatively large. Harris et al.' also propose that the matrix surrounding a growing graphite particle is plastically deformed to make room for the growing particle. If this plastic deformation does occur, then preferred recrystallization may be observed around the larger particles. If diffusion of carbon in ferrite is rate controlling, then a graphite particle growing in a matrix of, say, tempered martensite or pearlite, should be surrounded by a carbide depleted zone. Thus, the simple metallographic experiments reported here are sufficient to determine whether or not diffusion of carbon in ferrite is the dominant mechanism for the growth of graphite in steel. The present investigation considers graphitization in five alloys. The compositions are given in Table I. Graphitization was carried out at three temperatures: 900°K (627"C), 950°K (677"C), and 990°K ('717°C). Samples were reacted in both the martensitic and the pearlitic initial conditions. In the hypoeutectoid steels, Sets 7 and 8, .and in the hypereutectoid Fe-C binary, Set 6, graphitization was very limited after 1000 hr at temperature. In these samples graphite particles observed were less than 10 p in diam. In the hypereutectoid commercial steels, Sets 1 and 3, large graphite particles (100 p) did not appear until after 250 hr at temperature. The limited number of graphite particles observed and the range of sizes obtained prohibited measurement of growth rates in this investigation. However, in all samples showing graphitization, neithe a carbide depleted zone nor recrystallization was observed. illert's model predicts that diffusion of carbon in ferrite should become dominant for graphite particles larger than about 300 p in diam. The largest graphite particle observed in this investigation was approximately 450 p in diam. No evidence of carbide depletion was noted. Fig. 1 shows a typical graphite particle. INTRODUCTION Many research efforts over the past years have been devoted to the study of energy consumption in comminution and the characteristics of the broken material. The old "laws" have been superseded by more general methods of analysis1,2,3 but these methods have not received much attention outside the laboratory. The work to be described here was done in order to obtain scale-up information on wet rod milling of sylvinite. EXPERIMENTAL A 30 x 51 in. Denver rod mill with a scoop feeder was used for these tests. Ore was fed from a variable speed screw conveyor into the feed box along with saturated brine. The mill was filled to approximately 45% of its volume with 2400 lbs of a mixed rod charge. The minimum possible feed rate was 2.5 tph and the practical maximum for this mill was 8 tph. Individual tests were run by setting the solid feed rate, then adjusting the brine flow rate to give the desired pulp density. After steady state, as evidenced by constant discharge pulp density, had been reached, samples of the discharge were taken at 15-minute intervals. These samples were filtered, washed with alcohol, dried, then screened on Tyler screens using a Ro-tap shaker. The sylvinite feed was regular plant feed that had been scalped at 20 mesh and was tapped from the coarse ore bins. It had been previously passed through a roll crusher set at 3 inches and after scalping was essentially minus 1 in. plus 20 mesh. RESULTS The screen analysis of samples from each series of tests was plotted on double logarithmic scale paper to determine the reliability of the series. In some cases, a faulty sample or screening procedure dictated that the results of one test be discarded. The criterion is a simple one — if the slope of one plot was noticeably different from the others in the series, it was discarded. The only cases that caused difficulty were those in which the brine was not thoroughly displaced from the solids. When this occurred agglomerates were easily identified on the screens and the whole of the sample was retained on 3 or 4 screens. There were no border line cases. The number N given in Table 1 is the number of size analyses that were pooled to form the data shown in Fig. 1. While examining the reliability of the sizing and sampling by plotting the data, it became apparent that there was no significant difference between grinds made at 50 and 60% solids. Massive hematite ore (MHO) is a special high-grade iron ore used as lump ore in the process of obtaining direct reduced iron (DRI). The influence of porosity on the reducibility was investigated using optical and scanning electron microscopes. Hematite is the main component of the samples and occurs as granular crystals (10 ¦m), microplates (1 ¦m) and euhedral martite (10 to 30 ¦m). Quartz, maghemite, kenomagnetite and goethite are minor components. Primary micropores (+ to 1 ¦m) are associated with microplaty crystals that fill cavities between granular hematite. Secondary micropores (+ to 5 ¦m) related to euhedral martite crystals are the most important. The total porosity of weathered samples, measured using nitrogen adsorption and mercury injection, attains values up to 18 per cent, whereas unweathered samples have a porosity less than 2.5 per cent. Varajpo et al, 2002 showed that reducibility is strongly enhanced by porosity and this work shows that reducibility can be indirectly evaluated by bulk density.

Despite near-record commodity prices, the mining industry continues to search for ways to maintain profits in these times of steadily increasing energy prices and steadily decreasing grades. The pressure is still on today’s miners to continuously improve their operations because they know that one day prices too will drop. Some, however, have seized the opportunity to employ systematic methods to reduce costs and increase the efficiency of their workforce and equipment. As a result, closer attention is being paid to scheduling and the value that could be added by defining the extraction sequence that maximizes the net present value [NPV] of a project. This paper will discuss the challenges faced by Newmont Mining Corporation [Newmont] at its operations and the application of sophisticated software tools and methods in its search of solutions to this problem.

This paper presents a novel methodology for the hydraulic design of mine backfill distribution systems. The ?operating range? method uses the concepts of the hydraulic grade line and equivalent pipe length to determine flows and pressures as the pipeline route and static head change over the life of the mine. The operating range method is easy to learn because it is semi-graphical and uses well-known design concepts (e.g., the hydraulic grade line) and slurry design models (e.g., the Durand deposition velocity model). However, by changing the paradigm in which these concepts are used, the operating method allows all potential pipeline cases to be analysed simultaneously without the need to know the exact pipe routing. It also allows the hydraulics engineer to quickly identify ?pinch points? and ?slack flow? zones, to estimate the effect of changing the size or length of any given section of pipe, to assess the impact of changing the material properties of the backfill slurry, to size the slurry pumps, and to size and locate rupture discs when required.

This presentation describes a major modernization project at the Geco concentrator. The objectives of the program were to replace obsolete flotation equipment and upgrade process controls.Noranda Minerals Inc. — Gecc Division is located at Manitouwadge in Northern Ontario. The community is situated north of Lake Superior approximately equidistant from Thunder Bay and Sault Ste. Marie.Milling operations began in September, 1957. The mill processes a complex base metal ore by differential flotation techniques to produce copper, lead and zinc concentrates. To date some 43 million tons have been milled, qualifying Geco as a rather major base metal deposit.II. BACKGROUND:The Geco concentrator was designed and constructed in the mid 50's. A number of features specific to a concentrator of that vintage provided the justification for the modernization efforts described herein.Firstly, the mill was constructed without any instrumentation, not even pneumatic controls. Solid state electronics, computers and related instrumentation were unheard of, or rather primitive by today's standards.Secondly, some of the major equipment, in particular the flotation equipment, did not compare favourably to that in use today. MacIntosh flotation machines (more commonly known as Mac cells) were installed at Geco. These cells were prevalent in a number of concentrators built by Noranda, including Quemont Mining Corporation Limited, Gaspe Copper Mines Limited and Noranda — Horne Division. The Mac cells were used for copper and zinc rougher and scavenger operations. Some units were also installed for a pyrite recovery circuit that was never operated. In total, 104 Mac cells were installed in the main flotation area of the concentrator.

The Ashanti mine, located in Obusai, Ghana, West Africa, has been in production for over 100 years, and is currently the second largest single gold producer in Africa. The mine covers a concession area of 434 square kilometers with four main ore types: the quartz vein type, disseminated sulphide type, supergene sulphides and transition ore, and granitoids stock works (visible gold and quartz veinlets). Various mining strategies and methods have been employed for the mining of the narrow-vein ore at Ashanti. In recent years, the mine owner: Ashanti Goldfields Company Ltd. has embarked on a mine-wide expansion program to boost production to a target of one million ounces per annum. With the rapid depletion of its high-grade ore, a suitable mining method was required to produce a high tonnage at low cost to meet production objectives. This paper discusses how the Ashanti mine applied Canada experiences in mining technology to boost production, and the impact that the differing geological settings between the two countries had on the stope performance at the Ashanti operations. Experience developed at the Ashanti mine led to innovative modifications for stope layout and design methods in relatively poor ground conditions.

AISI 4130 steel is a medium carbon Cr-Mo steel used in automotive, aeronautic and other general-purpose industries. In this study, 4130 steel fatigue specimens were carburized at 927oC to enhance the carbon content in the steel, raising it from approximately 0.30% (non-carburized) to 0.90% (carburized, oil quenched and tempered). Rotating bending fatigue tests were performed on the R. R. Moore Rotating Beam Fatigue Testing System, in order to determine the high cycle fatigue (HCF) life of 4130 steel and plot the corresponding S-N diagrams. A comparison of the results of carburized and non-carburized specimens shows that carburizing of steel: a) increases the surface hardness and b) improves the fatigue strength of the steel by at least two orders of magnitude.

"The Wabush Mines project was formed in 1956 to develop a large iron ore property in Western Labrador. The town of Wabush along with the mining and concentrating facilities are located 640 air miles from Montreal, and 734 air miles from St. John's. The operation has been in production since late 1964.While mining and concentrating operations are located in Labrador, the pelletizing facilities are situated 275 miles south at Sept-Iles, Quebec. Dedicated in 1965, Wabush produces six million tons of high quality iron ore pellets annually. The company employs 1, 550 people at Wabush and the Pointe Noire plant at Sept-Iles.Wabush Mines is an unincorporated joint venture of three companies -The Steel Company of Canada, Dominion Foundries and Steel Ltd. and the remaining 58% by the Wabush Iron Co. Ltd. Wabush Iron Co. Ltd. is in turn owned by six companies: The Youngstown Sheet & Tube Company, Inland Steel Company, Interlake Inc., Wheeling Pittsburg Steel Company, Finsider International S.A. and Pickands Mather & Company which is also managing agent.The town of Wabush is set in a remote part of Northern Canada accessible only by rail and air transportation. But this in no way has hindered the growth and development of the area. Modern housing units, shopping facilities, airport and of course, recreational facilities are all patt of every day living amenities, an accepted aprt of southern communities, but quite unique for northern isolated mining localities."

Washington?s King County is constructing a new regional wastewater treatment facility, called Brightwater, in response to growth in the greater Seattle region. Planning conducted in the late 1950s identified the need for two regional treatment facilities. Constructed in the 1960s, these plants have served the region well. However, an eventual need for a third facility was also recognized. The Brightwater project implements the final phases of the long-term plan. The project includes a new treatment plant and an extensive conveyance system. When completed in 2010, the Brightwater facilities will treat sanitary sewer flows from growing populations living in northern King County and southern Snohomish County. The new system will fulfill commitments to provide wastewater services to local jurisdictions and sewer service providers in the King County Service Area. It will also provide more flexibility in the operation of the King County regional wastewater system. The Brightwater wastewater treatment plant will provide secondary treatment capacity using membrane bioractor technology in 2010 for 36 million gallons per day (mgd), with anticipated expansion in 2040 to 54 mgd, using membrane bioreactor technology. These capacities are for average wet-weather flows. The plant will also accommodate peak hourly flows of 130 mgd by 2010 and 170 mgd by 2040. With the recent increase in environmental awareness, gold mining companies are fast becoming signatories of the International Cyanide Management Code (ICMI, 2007). The objective of the Code is to improve the management of cyanide used in gold mining and to assist in the protection of human health and the reduction of environmental impacts associated with the use of cyanide. In particular the code specifies the following cyanide concentration limits: 50 ppm WAD cyanide in a tailings storage facility, 0.5 ppm WAD cyanide for effluents, and 0.022 ppm free cyanide or 0.022 ppm WAD cyanide as surrogate in the post mixing zone of river discharge. Weak acid dissociable (WAD) cyanide refers to those cyanide species liberated at a moderate pH of 4.5, such as HCN(aq) and CN-, and the majority of Zn, Cd, Cu, Ni and Ag complexes with low dissociation constants. It is potentially toxic to humans and animals. Gold plants using cyanide should ideally measure WAD cyanide online and destroy WAD cyanide in excess of the applicable limits to ensure compliance with the Code. Mintek has recently developed an online WAD cyanide analyser (WAD Cynoprobe). The WAD cyanide analysis technique is based on the use of a ligand exchange reagent that liberates WAD cyanide bound to metals such as Zn, Cd, Cu, Ni and Ag. The ligand exchange reaction is represented by the following chemical equation: Metal(CN)X + yLigand ↔ Metal(Ligand)y + xCN- The plant filtrate is treated with a ligand exchange reagent, to liberate WAD cyanide, before measuring the free cyanide concentration via amperometry. The WAD Cynoprobe measures both free and WAD cyanide concentration. Its fast analysis time, approximately five minutes, makes it suitable for use in the control and optimisation of the cyanide destruction and recovery process. The instrument has proven accurate and reliable in the analysis of synthetic copper, nickel and zinc cyanide solutions made up in the laboratory as well as under industrial gold plant conditions during various trials. The WAD Cynoprobe has gained widespread commercial acceptance and is currently implemented on nine gold plants around the world.
