"This paper describes the objectives and design parameters for the operation of a computerized In-The-Hole (I. T.H.) Drill. The principal objective is to add computer control to an Inco 00-60 I. T.H. (CMS-CD-90) drill in order to drill holes with greater accuracy. The computer provides control of the angle of the hole by maintaining the orientation of the drill head, and optimizes the straightness of the hole by maintaining a constant force on the drill bit.The second objective is to provide the greatest degree of operational automation, so the objective outlined above can be accomplished with a minimum of operator intervention.In order to provide full operational automation it was necessary to also provide the capability for the computer to add and remove drill rods. To accomplish this, a rod-handling mechanism consisting of a rod storage rack and rod manipulator arms was used.IntroductionMining machinery that lacks automatic control has been found to show a high degree of variation in work output and performance quality when operated by different personnel. Differences in operator attitude, judgment, and skill are reflected directly by production statistics. The addition of automated control has the potential for considerable improvement in machine life and performance. Even with a more acceptable mine environment and much safer conditions than ever before, situations still exist where it is preferable to remove personnel for reasons of safety as well as productivity. Typical advantages of such situations are automated skip loading and hoisting, and the use of remote control load-haul-dump units exposed to open stopes.Other cases arise where heavy work is required under conditions where lighting is poor, floors are slippery, noise levels are high and dust and oil mist exist in the atmosphere. I.T.H. drilling is carried out under such conditions and is one operation where automation can easily be justified."

During the last 20 years, more than 80 km (50 miles) of tunnels have been constructed in the Los Angeles, CA area. Recent projects include The East Central Interceptor Sewer (ECIS), completed in 2004. It spans more than 18 km (11 miles). The Northeast Interceptor Sewer (NEIS), completed in 2005, spans 11 km (7 miles). And the 2-km (1.3-mile) Metropolitan Transportation Authority?s Gold Line Eastside Extension (MCGLEE) was completed in 2006. All of the tunnel routes lay beneath heavily populated urban environments so minimizing ground surface settlement was critical to the success of the projects. Previous tunneling efforts in the Los Angeles area using open shield methods resulted in significant settlement that damaged roads, utilities, buildings and other structures. Earth pressure balance (EPB), or slurry machines, were specified for these projects to reduce subsidence risk. The contractors chose EPB tunnel boring machines (TBM) for the work. The closed and pressured face of the EPB TBM reduces loss of ground at the tunnel face and, when the machines are used in combination with gasketed pre-cast tunnel liners and backfill grout behind the installed segments, losses from over-cut of the excavated surface are also reduced.

"Research was performed to assess the feasibility of barrier membrane substances, for use within mining or associated high risk environments, in restricting the diffusion transport of radon gas. Specific tests were conducted, both within laboratory and in situ environments, to determine radon gas concentration ratios across a barrier of interest and emanation rate variation resulting from application of such materials. Several materials have been demonstrated to be effective in restricting the emanation of radon gas into initially radon-free environments. One liquid material shows particularly good promise upon consideration of ideal radon barrier criteria.IntroductionIt has long been known (I.2.3) that inhalation of the short-lived, alpha particle-emitting daughters of radon gas can result in irradiation of lung tissue with the potential for causing lung cancer. Control measures are necessary to maintain concentrations of airborne contamination at a minimum to protect miner health and safety. Typical control practices in mines have been through the application of systematic ventilation and backfilling of excavated opening. As mines become deeper, however, and additional workings become exposed, increased ventilation capacity requirements are needed. As an alternative to other radiation control measures, the use of sealants to prevent radon migration from walls into mine atmospheres may provide a suitable engineering alternative."

The goal of the U.S. Bureau of Mines diesel engine research program is to reduce exhaust emissions from diesel-powered equipment used in underground mines. This research has led to significant advances in aerosol measurement and to the development of more effective emission controls. This Information Circular contains reports of some of the presentations made at the Bureau's Information and Technology Transfer Seminar on Diesels in Underground Mines given in Minneapolis, MN, on September 29-30, 1992. The seminar emphasized the measurement and control of diesel particulate matter emissions. Topics covered include a discussion of the health issues associated with the use of diesel equipment underground, an overview of regulations, measurement techniques for diesel exhaust aerosol, levels of diesel exhaust pollutants found in mines, and modern emission controls. An appendix is included that contains a report describing the capabilities of the Bureau's diesel emissions research laboratory, two papers describing the effects of engine maintenance or: emissions, a paper describing the monitoring of carbon dioxide in mine air as an indicator of air quality, a glossary, and a list of abbreviations and acronyms.

The kcICON design-build project in Kansas City, Missouri includes widening the existing roadway, improving interchanges and grade separation bridges, and replacing the Missouri River Bridge. The Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) typically utilizes steel H-piles and steel pipe piles as driven pile support for bridges. After bidding the kcICON project, the cost of steel rose significantly and the design-build contractor used an innovative approach to reduce foundation costs without significantly affecting the project schedule. The kcICON team conducted a value engineering evaluation of alternative foundation types for use at four grade separation structures. The result of the value engineering evaluation was selection of precast, pre-stressed concrete (PPC) piles as the preferred foundation alternative. Terracon developed a test program to evaluate the performance, capacity, and suitability of PPC piles at the site using a PDA and CAPWAP analyses. This paper presents the value engineering design, rationale for selection of PPC piles, results of the pile test program, and findings during production pile driving. The collaborative approach to the project by MoDOT and the kcICON team, combined with testing and a site-specific design approach, resulted in substantial savings for the design-build contractor.

The objectives of this research were to define the chemical composition and physical characteristics of the aerosols associated with attached radon daughters in operating uranium mines, and to investigate the relationship between these aerosol parameters and operating conditions. Major Results and Conclusions The organic, inorganic and radiological characteristics of test chamber and active U-mine aerosols have been measured as a function of particle size. These measurements represent the first detailed analyses of the organic and inorganic components in U-mine aerosols and the first determinations of the details of the individual and total radon daughter distributions in operating U-mines. "There is growing evidence that modern methods of mining coal increase the risk of spontaneous combustion. Seemingly unimportant at this time, this hazard could prove to be a barrier to growth and development of the coal industry in some areas of Canada. The paper presents bedrock knowledge on spontaneous combustion gathered by scanning and evaluating current technical and research literature. Special efforts have been made to identify significant coal and environmental factors and to establish criteria for susceptibility. In addition to the state-of-the-art knowledge, preliminary results from on-going studies are discussed."

This report, sponsored by the Bureau of Mines, presents the results of an examination of the safety of the Blind Shaft Borer (BSB) shaft sinking system and an alternative modified BSB design concept in comparison to conventional shaft sinking technology. Detailed study of the two systems was also performed to identify and recommend design changes for optimum safety conditions. A comparison of the BSB systems with conventional shaft sinking was made on the basis of relative risk levels. Risk incorporates both the frequency and the potential consequence of accidents. A safety evaluation of the component operations of the two BSB systems was performed using a Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA) methodology. The results of this analysis show generally that both BSS systems are safer than conventional shaft sinking. The potential risk of conventional shaft sinking operations could be reduced by over 30%, on the average, with the use of the original BSB system, and by an average of about 10% with the modified BSB. Design change recommendations to further improve the safety of these systems include a better fire suppression system, improved man haulage systems and more compact hydraulics. An operational safety manual was also developed for the modified BSB system.

A process was developed, on a laboratory scale, for the removal of iron oxides from Weipa pisolitic bauxite. The technique involves the chemical reduction ofthe iron oxides by carbon, followed by selective removal of the iron species by acid leaching or chlorination.To remove more than 90 per cent of the iron it is necessary to reduce the iron oxides substantially to iron metal by heating the bauxite, pre-calcined at 650-800°C, with reactive carbon at 1040-1100°C. Reduction proceeds via the intermediate formation of hercynite (FeO.Al2O3) and difficulties have been encountered in reducing hercynite formed under less favourable reduction conditions.Following reduction, efficient selective removal of iron species is readily effected by acid leaching using dilute hydrochloric acid at 100°C, or chlorination at 500-750°C using Cl2, Cl2/N2, or Cl2/N2/CO mixtures.After removal of unreacted carbon, the final products contain 0·5-1.0 per cent Fe203 and 87-92 per cent Al203.

People are migrating because of economic, social, natural and political reasons. These natural and humane factors effects the distribution of populations. The need for tunnels has grown in order to provide a comfortable life and reduce losses such as waste of time, labor, energy, efficiency and so on. It is inevitable to carry out excavations in rock tunnels (shears, platforms, lines, connections, wastewater, distribution, energy, transportation etc.), that will be built by excavating with conventional method, by controlled blasting regarding with constrains. In this study of applied explosives engineering the blasting applications are evaluated, which were carried out for research and development purposes at Yenisahra Station tunnels in Kartal Formation which was built with the aim of solving İstanbul's transportation problem within the framework of the Kadıköy-Kartal Metro Project. Twenty-four shots were made by using explosives in 60 blastholes that were drilled in the tunnel faces, which were located between and outside of two different faults. Six microphones were used to measure the air shock and eight geophones were used to measure the parameter values of the vibrations (particle velocity, frequency, displacement, acceleration, amplitude, wavelength etc.), which were placed at predetermined points of the surface, occurred during the blasting applications. Data from the geophone and microphones were recorded on six seismographs. The coordinates and the distances between the shot points and the measurement stations are determined by an electronic theodolite. The total number of seismic records, recorded in seismographs, is 118. The number of records of vibrations that crossed the faults is 42 and the number of records of vibrations that did not cross the fault is 76. The particle velocity, frequency, amplitude, acceleration, displacement and wavelength were measured in transverse, longitudinal and vertical directions. The total number of measurements is 354. By evaluating all seismic records, the effect of delay intervals, faults and scaled distances on the particle velocity, frequency, amplitude, displacement, acceleration, wavelength and air shock were investigated. When the vibrations formed during the Research & Development (R&D) blasts were examined, it was determined that the parameter values of vibrations that crossed the faults are lower than the ones that did not cross the faults. In addition, when the particle velocity values of all vibrations are examined according to the present circumstances, it is determined that the waves did not cross the fault in all delay intervals are superposed in all directions, and that the least superposing occurred in the 50 ms delay range.

WHEN "Chief" Buehler in mid-September set out on his official 10,000 mile swing-around-the-circle visiting Local Sections he decided not to tell his audiences how to organize and operate a state geological survey. As the director for 28 years, of the Missouri Bureau of Geology and Mines (which, he concedes, is the best in existence) lie could have done this to good advantage; but he preferred to discuss affairs of the Institute. In 25 speeches made to member and student groups, he dwelt on sonic or all of the following phases of activities. He stressed the vital importance of the Local Sections in providing the opportunity for members to associate under pleasant auspices with others in their profession. The benefits of Institute membership he classified as tangible and intangible. Of the two lie felt that the latter were more important. A man's progress in his profession depends in large measure upon a broad acquaintance and friendship with others. The Institute is incomparably the best medium for meeting fellow engineers. The primary, function of the new enlarged Membership Committee is to obtain a comprehensive list of engineers eligible to be members, always hearing in mind that the standards of membership must not be lowered in any degree. These men are to be invited by individual letter to apply for membership. Whether they become members or not is of less importance; but it is vital that no qualified man should be outside the fold for the reason that membership had never been suggested to him. Dr. Buehler emphasized repeatedly his feeling that the younger man that had never had Institute membership brought specifically to his attention had been cheated:

Economic conditions after WorId War II made the recovery of Australian sources of sulphur one of considerable national importance. From 1947 to 1949 an investigation was made of recirculation techniques to produce acid plant grade gas from the Dwight-Lloyd down-draught sintering plant.During 1949 it appeared feasible to produce a gas of suitable 802 concentration and a decision was made to construct a gas purification train and a 150 tons/day contact acid plant. However, a number of difficulties remained in the production of the gases for sulphuric acid manufacture and as a result of research conducted to overcome these troubles the continuous up-draught sintering process was developed.The principal difficulties were:(a:) The down-draught sintering practice, as developed, produced an unusually high metallic lead precipitation in the windboxes. The disposal of this lead interrupted sintering operations and the delivery of gas to the acid plant.(b) The production capacity of the existing sintering plant was fully extended and the adoption of recirculation of gases, in an endeavour to satisfy acid plant requirements, would probably reduce the plant production capacity.(c) The prevailing high temperature of water available for purification train cooling required a higher than...

We discuss the mechanical characteristics of underground structures that are subjected to vertical oscillations. Under such circumstances - expected when an earthquake rupture occurs very close to highly developed urban areas - the conventional seismic analysis, which mainly considers horizontal shear oscillations, may not be fully valid. Our analysis, based on the elastic wave theory, shows the effects of vertical disturbances and the generation mechanism of the unique damage patterns observed on the occasion of the 1995 Hyogo-ken Nanbu (Kobe) Earthquake. Wir diskutieren über die mechanischen Eigenschaften der unterirdischen Strukturen, die sich vertikalen Schwingungen aussetzen. Unter solchen Umständen - erwartet, wann ein Erdbebenabbruch sehr nah an hochentwickelten städtischen Bereichen geschieht - kann die herkömmliche seismische Analyse, die sich hauptsächlich horizontale Schubbewegungen überlegt, möglicherweise nicht völlig gültig sein. The Air Force Weapons Laboratory (AFWL) has been carrying out a series of experiments whose principal purpose is to measure the dynamic response of rock media to large pressure pulses. Coupled with the field experiments have been theoretical calculations simulating this response. These two approaches allow an appraisal of the current ability to measure in-situ rock response under extreme conditions and also give a fair estimate of the current state-of-the-art in the area of computer calculation of the response of "real" geologic media to a large load. The area chosen for the test series is composed of a sequence of sedimentary units (shale, sandstone, and limestone) located in the Estancia Valley 45 miles east of Albuquerque, N.M. (Fig. 1). The units, which dip gently off the uplifted Manzano Mountains to the west, are essentially horizontal at the test site. An extensive geologic and geophysical investigation of the area was carried out in the form of surface mapping and seismic exploration. Numerous holes were cored and material properties were determined from tests of the cores. In-situ geophysical measure¬ments were also carried out. The experiment consisted of loading a 60X40 ft test area with a 4000-psi transient exponentially decaying pressure pulse. The pulse was initiated at one end and traveled the 60-ft length of the test bed. The test area was instrumented with acceleration, velocity, and strain measuring devices placed in drill holes to depths of 30 ft. This work is both a revision and an elaboration of Bureau of Mines Bulletin 371, which was published in 1934 and included data available to October 1933. During the intervening years, a large number of new experimental, high-temperature, heat-content data have become available through continuous, systematic efforts of the Pacific Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines and the Laboratory for Inorganic and Physical Chemistry of the University of Groningen (Netherlands), coupled with various individual investigations at many institutions. In addition, calculations from spectroscopic and molecular constant data have been extended and applied to a wide variety of gaseous substances. This bulletin purposes to collect and correlate all available high-temperature heat-content and specific-heat data for inorganic sub-stances and to formulate tables and algebraic expressions for their representation. It is hoped in this manner to remove some of the tedium of thermodynamic calculations for industrial metallurgical research workers and engineers who often have available only an inadequate library in this field. It is expected also that this bulletin will have value to those teaching courses in metallurgical and chemical thermodynamics.

"The successful introduction of new high intensity stirred milling technologies (e.g. IsaMill, SMDetritor) to the mining industry in recent years prompted Noranda-Falconbridge to initiate a study comparing these technologies to the conventional technologies of ball milling and existing vertical stirred mills (e.g. VertiMill). The study was unique in that it utilized the same material (Brunswick Mine zinc cleaner regrind mill feed), the same sizing instrument (a Malvern laser difractometer) and sampling protocol, and media size and type (for the high intensity stirred mills). The paper compares the net energy efficiency (kWh/t) of the various technologies, their power intensity (kW/m3) and product size distribution spread (P80/P20). A key finding is that media size is critical to achieving optimal performance. As part of the performance comparison, an analysis of the four methods of power measurement was made (Prony brake, shaft torque, grinding chamber reaction torque, “no-load” correction) and followed-up with an experimental test procedure using three of these methods. The findings include divergent results for power measurements and some explanations based on the observations are proposed. The direct shaft torque and Prony brake calibration methods are shown to be the methods most suitable for stirred mills.INTRODUCTIONThe motivation for the investigation reported here was the lack of a suitable comparison within the available literature of relative grinding efficiency for the emerging crop of new industrial fine grinding technologies. Such comparisons are potentially fraught with inconsistency, from ore samples and grinding media used, to testing methodology, to size measurement techniques, to the power measurements themselves. The collaboration of the industrial suppliers (at the time MIM Technologies and Svedala, now Xstrada Technologies and Metso Minerals) and McGill University (P. Radsiszewski) were sought in order to ensure as valid a comparison as possible. The work was performed between October 2000 and November 2002, led by the mineral processing group at the Noranda Technology Centre (NTC) in Pointe-Claire, Quebec. The paper is presented in two sections; Part A considers the different power measurement methods and a comparison of the results for the SMDetritor (SMD) technology, while Part B reviews the grinding performance of the 5 technologies investigated using the selected performance criteria."

During the fiscal year 1935-36, the Ore-Testing Section has been active in carrying out a program designed to attain the objectives that have been set up for it. For the purpose of standardizing important testing methods, an attempt has been made to develop a rationalized scheme for ore testing, starting with preliminary investigations to determine the physical and chemical properties of the ore, following this with a logical selection and trial of processing tests to find out how the ore may be most effectively treated, and concluding with a discussion of what interpretation may be placed on the results in terms of plant design and operation. A selection of procedures that appear well-suited to the ore-dressing problems under investigation is included in the following paper of this report so that other experimenters may be enabled to verify our findings and to offer criticisms and suggestions for improving our practice. A tentative scheme for the evaluation of flotation reagents is being investigated, and some progress has been made in a study to determine the significance of small-scale testing. These projects have required 899 analyses. Papers on these and others on ore testing, such as testing for amalgamation and for cyanidation, will be included in future annual reports.
