This paper, describing the milling practices at the Minpro plant of the Tennessee Mineral Products Corporation, Spruce Pine, N. C., is the first of a series being prepared by the U.S. Bureau of Mines on feldspar milling methods and costs in the various feldspar producing areas in the United States. It describes not only the latest practices in feldspar grinding but includes studies of the cost of producing ground feldspar. These cost studies, obviously of interest to every consumer and purchaser of feldspar and to all feldspar grinders, are also of value to the small operator, who is generally prone to understimate his real costs. It describes the latest practices in feldspar milling and includes detailed costs of grinding. The cost tabulations presented show operating expenditures only and not total production costs. Details of costs are given only to the extent that they are essential to the technical discussion and study of the methods employed. A description of the recently installed milling unit for the preparation of granular glasspar by graded crushing, and magnetic separation is of particular interest. It illustrates how highly specialized feldspar milling has become, and to what an extent grinders are going to supply consumers with the products best suited for their particular needs.

The process of longwall coal extraction coal causes fractures in the overlying and underlying strata and these fractures become pathways for gas released from adjacent coal seams to flow into the mine workings and contaminate the ventilation air. If the rate of gas emission exceeds the diluting capacity of the ventilation air, the gas concentration will increase and exceed the statutory limit resulting in production delays.All potential gas sources within the planned mining area, including coal seams located above and below the working seam, should be identified and sufficient gas data collected and used to determine the specific gas emission from each gas source. Gas reservoir and emission modelling is recommended to determine specific gas emission and changes in gas emission from individual sources over the planned mining area. Accurate gas reservoir and emission modelling provides the information required to accurately design gas drainage programs to effectively manage gas emissions and minimise the risk of ‘gas-outs’.Given the increasing occurrence of incidents of gas concentration in ventilation air exceeding the 2.0 per cent statutory limit and changes to mine plans to avoid ‘difficult-to-drain’ areas, it is apparent that many operations are not effectively utilising gas reservoir and emission modelling to identify high gas emission areas and are not completing sufficient gas drainage in advance of planned mining.The process of gas reservoir and emission modelling to support gas drainage design to control tailgate gas concentration and fugitive emissions is presented and discussed.CITATION:Black, D J, 2017. High tensile thick plates (>80mm, weight ~3000 Kg) of medium carbon low alloy steel, when heat treated, manifested higher percentage of crystalline area (>20%) in fractured surface. Such problem was not encountered in thinner plates. The genesis of higher crystallinity in fracture was examined. It was observed that the thicker plate undergone slower rate (Average 0.9oC/Sec.) from soaking temperature to Ms temperature) of cooling after austenising during oil quenching and thereby quenched microstructure had upper bainites. During tempering of as quenched bainite, additional precipitation took place at the lath boundaries of bainite. This led to weakening of grain boundaries and aided easy crack propagation during fracture and resulted in formation of higher percentage of crystalline area in fractured surface. Enhancement in cooling rate (Average 1.8oC/Sec. from soaking temperature to Ms temperature) of austenised plate by switching over from oil quenching to water quenching practice resulted in complete transformation of austenite into martensite and produced ductile fracture (zero Crystallinity). Plates conformed improvement in mechanical properties between 2-5%.

"With the narrow vein structure of Nova Scotia gold deposits, selective mining is rarely possible and mill heads will be too low (below 0.10 oz per ton of gold) to support a conventional mill of up to 1000 ton per day capacity at present gold prices. The recent operation of a small 100 t.p.d. mill at Cochrane Hill using fine grinding - leaching - filtration supported this assertion. Milling costs exceeded $25.00/ton of feed mainly due to high capital, labour and maintenance costs.Accordingly, since 1981, efforts have been directed towards the development of a cheap gold extraction process in terms of both capital and operating costs. The main criteria is to produce gold below US $200 per oz including all administration, mining and process stages. This paper describes such a process development for Cochrane Hill. LOCATION AND HISTORY OF THE PROPERTYThe Cochrane Hill property is located about 8 miles North of Sherbrooke, N.S. on highway No. 7. Sherbrooke is about 180 miles east of Halifax. Gold was originally discovered at Cochrane Hill in the 1860's. Early work consisted of trenching. In the 1930's a small shaft was sunk to about 80 feet and some tonnage treated using a stamp mill with gravity concentration of gold.Northumberland Mines Ltd. acquired a 70% interest in the property in 1977. Subsequent drilling indicated a potential zone of gold mineralization with a drill-indicated tonnage of one million tons having a grade of 0.07 ounces per ton of gold (all high assays cut to 1 oz) down to a depth of 300 feet recoverable by open pit mining methods. In broad terms, the goldbearing zone is about 50 feet wide and 800 feet long and dips at about 70°."

This paper outlines briefly results of seismic measurements recorded in the vicinity of quarry blasting under practical operating conditions. The data cover field work done from January to the middle of August 1930, during which time records were made of 61 blasts in 19 quarries. Of the tests made, one was in biotite-gneiss, two in dolomite, two in a flintlike volcanic complex, three in gabbrodiorite, five in trap rock, and six in limestone. One quarry was in Alabama, two were in South Carolina, two in New York, four in Kentucky, five in Connecticut, and five in Massachusetts. Explosive charges ranged from 0.30 pound to 41,900 pounds, and the method of shooting varied from mud caps through hammer and wagon drill holes to churn drill holes and coyote tunnel shots.

The results of precious metal exploration carried out by Amoco Minerals New Zealand Limited over EL 33-137 in the Longwood Range, Southland, are described. Widespread gold and platinum in alluvial deposits on the perimeter of the range and anomalous gold in stream sediments on its southern and south western flanks indicates that the precious metals were probably derived from erosion of the mafic rocks of the Longwood Complex.

Industrial wastes containing 30-50 wt.% Al2O3 and 40-60 wt.% SiO2 may serve as an alternative resource for producing Al-Si alloys. Various raw materials such as used refractory materials from metallurgical furnaces, coal fly ash, andalusite residues, and so on were tested in laboratory to produce Al-Si alloys using carbon-thermal reduction process. A mixture of anthracite and petroleum coke was used as reducing agent. One of the most important operations was to prepare the briquettes made of different raw materials with varying contents of Al2O3 and SiO2. The effects of briquette property, A/S ratio (mass ratio of Al2O3 and SiO2), the amount of carbon reducing agent, on the reduction process and the resulting metals were investigated. The results are useful for development of an alternative technology for Al-Si alloy production, which has the potential application in recycling metals from industrial wastes containing Al2O3 and SiO2.

[This Is the ninth in a series of reports on properties of commercial motor fuels, made in accordance with a cooperative agreement between the Cooperative Fuel Research (C.F.R.) Committee and the Bureau of Mines of the United States Department of the interior. The first report gave data on motor gasoline sold during the winter of 1935-36.3/ The Present report presents analytical data for 2,033 samples, representing the products of approximately 80 companies, which, as in previous surveys, include both large and small suppliers. In addition, the Pacific coast is represented by data that were average by the Pacific Coast Technical Group before 'being submitted and are published exactly as they were received. As in previous surveys, the data are divided into the three groups of samples of regular-price, premium-price, and third-grade gasolines, and each group has been averaged separately. The cumber of samples, items, and brands comprising each group, exclusive of those of the Pacific coast, arc as follows: Regular price, 1,066 samples, 208 items, and 49 brands; premium price, 575 tamales, 154 items, and 38 brands; third-grade gasoline, 7;4 samples, 150 items, and 53 brands. We present a novel hybrid algorithm for quantifying the ore grade variability that has central importance in ore reserve estimation. The proposed algorithm has three stages: (1) fuzzy clustering, (2) similarity measure, and (3) grade estimation. The method first considers data clustering, and then uses the clustering information for quantifying the ore grades by means of a cumulative point semimadogram function. The method provides a measure of similarity and gives an indication of the regional heterogeneity. In addition, grade estimations can be obtained at different levels of similarity using a weighting function, which is the standard regional dependence function (SRDF). Occupational hearing loss is a permanent illness with no recovery currently possible. For underground coal mine workers, Noise Induced Hearing Loss (NIHL) continues to be a serious health issue. One of the principal and fundamental machines used in underground mining operations is also one of the loudest. Noise generated on the continuous mining machine is the result of 3 operational components: the cutting system, the dust collection system, and the onboard conveying system. During underground acoustic evaluations, the conveyor system noise was observed to be dominant. In order to more closely examine sound generated by the continuous mining machine, sound power levels were measured in a reverberation chamber at the Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL). Different chain types and configurations were installed on the conveyor system, and the resulting sound power level ranged from 118 dB(A) to 108 dB(A). Noise generated by the dust collection system was also examined and found to be 107 dB(A).

This paper describes how Automated Mining Systems (AMS) is evolving the state-of-the-art in guidance systems for autonomous underground vehicles. The techniques, trade-offs, and lessons learned from these systems are described, including the safety regime that has been implemented. First generation autonomous guidance systems for underground vehicles relied on infrastructure for the vehicle to follow. However, there are additional costs associated with that approach. The current generation uses a pair of laser range finders as its only guidance sensors. This system uses a minimum of infrastructure, in the form of a redundant system of location referencing. Advanced steering and drive control algorithms are incorporated into this generation of system. The next generation of infrastructureless guidance systems will be based on a 3D vision sensor, which was originally developed for autonomous Mars rovers and is being adapted for underground mining use. Results of early underground field trials are presented, along with a description of this emerging technology.

"A Pilot Plant was installed in one of the grinding circuits of the Dome Mill, Ontario, Canada. Tests were conducted on a KCCD12 Knelson Concentrator to systematically analyze the effect of operating variables on the performance. The main objective of this test work was to explore the effect of very coarse (6 mm) feed size on GRG recovery and performance of the Knelson concentrator. Preliminary results have shown that coarse feed size is deleterious to maximizing recovery. Size-by-size GRG recoveries have shown an unusual trend in the sense that recoveries do not decrease monotonically with decreasing gold particle size. Similar trend observed in one other full-scale unit has been compared. The observed trend is probably linked to the feed size distribution and top size.INTRODUCTIONKnelson Concentrators are the most widely used semi-continues centrifuge gravity separation units for the recovery of gold and platinum group minerals (Xiao and Laplante 2004). The main advantages over the competing centrifugal gravity units are their design, operating simplicity and good separation efficiency that make them the most common choice for gravity circuit. Despite some characterization at bench scale and a limited characterization at full scale, there is a lack of a comprehensive study of impact of operating variables on efficiency that reflects realistic full scale operating practice. GRG characterization studies, at bench scale, on these units provide information about the occurrence of gold in ore samples but fail to provide adequate information about the effect of operating variables for full-scale units. It is well known fact that such work is difficult to undertake on full-scale units owing to the difficulties involved in sampling and systematic variation of operating parameters. To tackle these problems, a pilot facility consisting of a 12-in CD Knelson Concentrator, a feed screen and tailing pump was installed in one of the grinding circuits of Dome Mill. This paper describes the work carried out and the results.Porcupine Joint Venture (PJV)Porcupine Joint Venture was formed in 2002 between Placer Dome Inc. and Kinross Gold Corporation. The JV utilizes the milling capacity of the Dome Mill to process ore from Placer Dome and Kinross mines. The Dome Mill circuit has gravity concentration, cyanidation and CIP circuits to recover gold. Gravity recovery has been used at Dome Mill since inception to recover gold: first by using conventional jigs, which were eventually replaced by two Knelson Concentrators in 1993, one in each of the grinding circuits. Three more Knelsons joined the circuit in 2002 to improve gravity recovery. An Acacia Intensive Leach Reactor was also added in 2002 to process gold concentrates replacing shaking tables (Chong et al 2004)."

The mining engineering design professional has limited practical and reliable tools for planning successful room-and-pillar stone mines using readily-available and collectible information. Three techniques are in common use today: the hard rock CANMET method of Hedley and Grant, the hard rock method of Stacey and Page, and the oil shale method of Hardy and Agapito. Other methods have been proposed, such as the USBM method of Obert and Duvall, the CSIR/Penn State method of Bieniawski, and the soft rock confined core method of Abel, Wilson, and Ashwin. However, the latter have practical shortcomings when applied to room-and-pillar stone mines such as developed for construction aggregate production. Ideally, the use of multiple techniques resulting in the same acceptable and reliable answer is the goal. Recently, in several underground stone mines areas of undersized pillars were examined. These undersized pillars apparently resulted from non-adherence to a mine plan. These undersized pillars now exhibit strong evidence of incipient failure such as slabbing, opening of through-going fractures, and hour-glassing. This situation allows examination of pillar designs at a ?safety factor? of essentially one. This rare opportunity allowed the examination of the suitability and adjustment of the first three design methods discussed, resulting in greater overall confidence in the methodologies.

Due to the reduction in frictional resistance, the characteristics of joint infill have a major role to play on rock mass instability. This paper elucidates the laboratory behaviour of graphite infilled joints based on a large-scale shear apparatus under constant normal stiffness (CNS). Discontinuities in a graphite mine have been simulated using high strength gypsum plaster, with the joints infilled with compressed graphite layers. The Fourier series was employed to characterize the joint surface, and the method of using the Fourier coefficients for the prediction of dilation and normal stress with displacement is explained. Die Charateristik von Verbindungsfüllungen hat einen wichtigen Einfluss auf Felsmassenstabilität aufgrund der Verringerung des Reibwiderstandes. Diese Veröffentlichung untersucht das Verhalten von Graphit gefüllten Verbindungen im Labormaßstab mit einer Methode die auf einem gross-umfang Apparateprinzip unter konstanter Normal-Steifheit beruht. Unregelmässigkeiten in einer Graphit Mine wurden mit Gypsum Gips von hoher Festigkeit simuliert, die Verbindungen wurden mit kompressierten Graphitschichten gefüllt. Fourier Reihen wurden angewandt um die Verbindungs Fläche zu Characterisieren. Die Methode die verwendet wurde um die Ausdehnung und Normalkraft mit der Verschiebung mit Hilfe von Fourierkoeffizienten zu bestimmen wird beschrieben. Due à diminution des résistances par frottements, les caractéristiques des joints de remplissage joue un rôle majeur sur les instabilités de la roche. Cet article étudie le comportement en laboratoire des joints de remplissage en graphite à partir d’un dispositif de friction à grande échelle sous rigidité normale constante. Les discontinuités dans une mine de graphite ont été simulées grâce à un plâtre à haute teneur en gypse, dont les joints ont été remplis de couches de graphite compressées. La caractérisation de la surface des joints a été réalisée avec les séries de Fourier. La méthode utilisant le coefficient de Fourrier pour la prédiction de la dilatation et de la compression en fonction du déplacement est également expliquée.

"Falcon Concentrators Inc. has developed a high capacity centrifuge for the recovery of fine, free gold as well as other metals and minerals which were previously thought to be unrecoverable by gravity means. Development started in the early 1980's and the first commercial operation was commissioned in 1986. Gold applications include scavenging conventional gravity and cyanidation circuit tailings, cleaning gravity concentrates, cleaning flotation concentrates to melting grade, scavenging flotation tailings, and placer mining. Recent development work by Falcon has expanded the applications scope of the centrifugal concentrator to include many minerals amenable to gravity concentration including iron, tin, industrial minerals, and hazardous wastes. This paper discusses this technology including its history, present applications, and future potential. OVERVIEW OF CENTRIFIJGAL CONCENTRATIONUsing centrifugal force to enhance the separation of materials by differential specific gravity has been researched for over a century. Many attempts have been made to concentrate minerals in high gravity fields. Patents were granted on this subject as early as 1891 (see Figure 1). Patenting activity continued into the 1920's and has been relatively quiet since. It is significant that no centrifugal system of gravity concentration has been broadly accepted by the mineral processing community until recently. Much of the world's reserve of mineral deposits which are amenable to conventional gravity concentration technology (coarse-grained) have been mined and therefore there is an increasing demand for technology which can economically recover the fine-grained gravity recoverable minerals in the remaining deposits. In addition, centrifugal concentration can play an increasing role in solving environmental problems by offering an inexpensive method of concentrating hazardous materials such as uranium, plutonium, mercury, lead, and other heavy metals. The overall cost of disposing of these substances safely can be drastically reduced if they are recovered into a concentrated form prior to disposal."

The Epithermal and Mesothermal Gold Prospectivity modelling projects carried out by Crown Minerals provided explorers in New Zealand with a new compilation of historical exploration data combined with new geological information from the GNS QMap 1:250,000 scale mapping project. These data were used to produce predictive mineral potential maps for gold mineralisation in New Zealand. The aim of these projects, to stimulate mineral exploration and investment in exploration, has been successful with eight new companies acquiring new tenement positions and committing significant exploration expenditure to exploring in New Zealand in the coming years. The projects were done at a national scale and consequently not all exploration data were compiled into the prospectivity models. Several of the new companies recognised the value of the prospectivity modelling work and committed exploration funds to continue the modelling process. They recognised a need to compile the remaining data and run the models again to allow detailed exploration targeting. Detailed data compilations including digitising historic exploration stream sediment sample, rock chip sample, soil sample and drilling data has been completed. New models have been completed in Otago for mesothermal gold mineralisation and in the Coromandel and Northland for epithermal gold. The new models have been compared with the original regional scale models and used to target prospect scale exploration. This work has allowed exploration models for epithermal and mesothermal mineralisation in New Zealand to be refined. More importantly this work has identified significant areas with potential to host gold mineralisation with little or no systematic geochemical data including soil sampling or drilling. Exploration work programs have been designed to acquire these missing data and exploration funds have now been committed to test the areas highlighted by the prospectivity modelling. In summary, the Epithermal and Mesothermal Gold Prospectivity modelling work has successfully attracted new investment and ideas to the exploration scene in New Zealand. The projects had an estimated cost of NA$250 000 and will in the next two years, just through exploration expenditure, attract more than NZ$10 M in investment. If a mine is discovered the return on investment will be considerably greater.
