A theory for cutter roof failure in coal mines has been developed. It is shown that the key parameters influencing the likelihood of cutter roof failure are the rock strength, the vertical stress (depth) and the horizontal to vertical stress ratio. The support force necessary to prevent the development of this mode of failure is, in most cases, so high as to make it impractical to apply a force of such magnitude. It is, therefore, better to allow the failure to occur and to design a bolting system to support the dead weight load of the failed block. This is probably best achieved by using a yielding bolt system (such as split set bolts) which is anchored well beyond the top of the potential failure block. The maximum potential caving height determined from this theoretical approach compares favourably with field observations reported in the literature.

When designing excavation support systems in urban environments, it is often necessary to consider the effect of vertical surcharge loads from adjacent structures. Several methods are used in practice to establish the horizontal surcharge-induce pressure on the excavation support. According to the experience of the authors, these methods often seem to overestimate the effect of the surcharge and may have significant impact on the construction costs. This paper explores several of these procedures and provides a discussion as to the reasons for the differences in surcharge effect predictions between different procedures. It also provides practical recommendations for designers dealing with excavation support design.

Parts I and II in this series of papers presented the chemistry of medium-temperature pressure leaching of copper sulfide concentrates and reviewed the metallurgical development of a process to effectively recover copper using medium-temperature pressure leaching and direct electrowinning (DEW). Part III reviewed the large-scale demonstration of the MT-DEW-SX process at Bagdad, Arizona. Key features of the process were the use of superfine grinding of the concentrate (to a P98 of 12 to 15 µm and a P80 of 6 to 7 µm), pressure leaching at 160ºC with 1,380 kPa (200 psig) oxygen overpressure, DEW to produce LME Grade A cathode, recycling some of the lean electrolyte to the pressure leaching step, and treatment of a lean electrolyte bleed by solution extraction (SX). Recycling of lean electrolyte provided all of the acid required to effectively dissolve copper and convert approximately 65% to 70% of the sulfide sulfur to elemental sulfur, resulting in an acid-autogenous process for pressure leaching. This paper (Part IV) discusses the development and design of a full-scale commercial application for the Morenci operation in Arizona.

El presente texto describe el sistema epitermal de Arcata, situado en Arequipa, Perú. Arcata es un distrito epitermal de sulfuración intermedia rico en plata y metales base, cuya mineralización se hospeda en vetas de rumbo predominante noroeste y movimiento principal paralelo a la inclinación que forman una estructura de fosa (graben). Las vetas poseen texturas de relleno de espacios abiertos como bandeados costriformes, en cucarda, crecimientos en peine y brechas, con ganga de cuarzo, calcita, rodonita y rodocrosita. Por su parte, los minerales de mena más comunes son galena, esfalerita, calcopirita, con los metales preciosos hospedados en sulfosales de plata (pirargirita y tetrahedrita). Asimismo, se ha identificado una compleja secuencia paragenética con varios pulsos responsables de la mineralización económica.

"Micron or sub-micron size gold inclusions in sulphide minerals cannot be extracted by conventional cyanidation. The gold surfaces must first be exposed by decomposition of the sulphides. As an alternative to roasting, pressure oxidation was found to be a most satisfactory method to decompose the sulphides and expose the gold particles. For cyanidation the pressure oxidation pulp has to be neutralized and stabilized with lime. It was found that thiourea can extract the gold directly from the pressure oxidation pulp without pH adjustment and oxidant addition. The main obstacles against the common use of thiourea are circumvented by a recently described control method of the emf during leaching.INTRODUCTION Amalgamation and cyanidation are the most conventional processes for gold extraction. The prerequisite for gold extraction is the possibility of gold surface to be contacted by mercury or by the cyanide solution. Encapsulated gold has little chance of contact and this leads to poor extractions.The reasons why a gold ore may be refractory are: micron or sub-micron size gold particles included in the sulphide minerals, such as pyrite and arsenopyrite; presence of and association with antimony, arsenic, tellurium and carbonaceous minerals. Some alternative processes, such as double oxidation(1,2), pretreatment with lime , H202, chlorine and Caro's acid, roasting and thiourea leach, have solved some of the problems of ""refractory"", but the sub-micron gold in sulphide minerals still shows little response. Roasting and the cyanidation of the calcine was one of the most successful approaches for this type of gold ore.There are two disadvantages to the roasting process: (1) the generation of sulphur, arsenic, antimony and mercury containing gases is undesirable and the control is extremely expensive; (2) gold particles might be fused in the roasted product and the oxidized base metals in the calcine might reduce the cyanidation efficiency. In recent years the pressure oxidation process has been considered as one of the more effective and satisfactory methods to decompose the sulphide minerals and expose the gold surface to the cyanide leach solution. The pollution problem could be better controlled and the gold extraction is more amenable."

Industrial minerals by definition are minerals used as part of an industrial process and usually are one of a number of components, eg finely ground Limestone is an extender in the manufacture of paint. They are normally non-metallic and non-fuel, but like all generalisations there are a number of exceptions. Take rutile û a source of titanium, a metal and also the raw material in the manufacture of titanium dioxide pigment. Industrial minerals under this general definition include construction and agricultural minerals. They are included in the same grouping, principally because their sources are similar and in many cases the raw material, example limestone, can be multi-functional. Calcium carbonate raw materials such as limestone, are used in a wide range of applications from industry as an inert filler, to agriculture as a 'lime' source and to construction and as an important component in the manufacture of cement. As far as this paper is concerned I will avoid discussing the agricultural or construction applications, including burnt lime production.

Development during 1942 led to the discovery of 26 new fields in the Texas Gulf Coast, as compared with 27 during 1941. Of these, 19 are classed as oil fields, 4 distillate fields, and 3 gas fields. Production from the new fields amounted to 614,467 bbl. to October 1942. Producing Sections.—Discoveries in I942, compared with the previous two years, classified by producing formations, are shown in the following table: It is interesting to note the increase in Wilcox discoveries due to the extensive geophysical campaign that has been con. ducted since 1940. Drilling.—During the year 688 wells were drilled, of which 574 produced oil or gas and 114 were dry. This represents a considerable decline in activity over the previous year, when 1405 wells were drilled in the area, of which 1081 were producers and 324 failures. Jackson County continued to hold the lead, with 222 wells completed. Production.—-Despite curtailed drilling, production amounted to 118,009,451 bbl. for 1942, indicating a slight increase over the 113,726,893 bbl. produced during 1941. The statistics in Tables I and 2 include condensate and distillate as oil production, because many Gulf Coast fields produce oils with a wide variation of specific gravities, all of which are commingled in pipe lines. Table 3 shows by counties most of the activities referred to. The number of wells drilled includes only field wells; not wildcats. Outstanding Fields of 1942 The Texas Gulf Coast covered in this report has 270 more or less active oil and gas fields, including the new discoveries of 1942. Of these the most outstanding from the standpoint of production are listed in Table 4. Each of these fields produced one million barrels or more during 1942. Some of the fields where new extensions are occasionally referred to as separate fields, such as West Columbia and New West Columbia, or Thompson and South Thompson, are combined to give a more accurate outline. Two interesting facts may be noted from this list of some 26 oil fields: (I) that the Lolita field, Jackson County, is the only discovery since 1938 to produce more than one million barrels annually, although there have been 79 discoveries since Jan. I, 1940; (2) that 20 of these 26 fields produce from the Frio. New Fields ALief, Harris County.—Pure Oil Company's No. I Mike Albanese was drilled to 8637 ft. in Cook Mountain shale. Bench stoping operations at the Isa Lead mine have been underway for over 11 years. They were implemented to address safety, productivity and mining cost concerns noted with cut and fill mining operations which were then being used to extract ore from the Racecourse orebodies. This paper describes the main features of benching operations at the Isa Lead mine and identifies the key elements for the success of the method. Four case histories are presented which highlight several of these factors.

"Copper sulphate is a common flotation reagent for blende ores. Metallic iron also is present in the mill circuit, and a reaction between the iron and the salt would be in accord with well-known chemistry. The abundance of metallic iron in a flotation feed may be noted by even perfunctory examination. First of all the mine contributes metallic iron, then the coarse-crushing machines add their share, and finally the fine-grinding medium its portion. If the grinding is with cast-iron balls the amount of metallics is greater than when steel is used. Thus it is that much more metallic iron is present than would be indicated by noting the ball consumption. An estimate that the total amount of metallics is twice that supplied by the balls and liners might not be far amiss.That copper sulphate plates out on iron in an acid solution is well known, but since flotation is practiced commonly in solutions where acid has not been added this reaction has not been given sufficient thought.This problem has been the basis of a study undertaken jointly by the Mississippi Valley Station of the United States Bureau of Mines and the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy, at Rolla, Missouri. Its importance may be understood better when the tonnage of zinc ores now being treated by flotation in this country is considered. According to Gaudin4 5,536,244 tons of zinc or were treated by flotation during 1927. In these operations copper sulphate was employed as an activating agent; the amount per ton averaged 0.81 pound for straight sulphide zinc ores and 1.16 pounds for complex ores. Since such large quantities of zinc ore are treated by flotation and since metallic iron is always present, the importance of studying their reactions on each other and the effect of their reaction"

PT Freeport Indonesia’s Deep Ore Zone (DOZ) is a block cave mining operation that has been in production for 15 years. DOZ is located approximately 900 m below surface and has an average production rate of more than 5000 t/d. The footprint of the extraction level will ultimately be 900 m long and average more than 200 m wide. The undercut level is located 20 m above the extraction level.While developing Panel 1K on the northern portion of the extraction level, a major geotechnical problem was encountered when there was a change in lithology and an associated fault intersection. A large collapse of the hanging wall of the extraction level drifts occurred in the area of the fault intersection between February and March 2011. This was followed by a collapse of one of the undercut level drifts directly above the extraction level in May 2011.It was suggested that the best approach to mitigate risk during rehabilitation was to systematically open up the failed area under the protection of a steel set support system. To achieve this, approximately 60 t of grout was injected from the undercut level to fill the voids created when the rock mass between the two levels failed. A ground penetrating radar system was used to survey the condition of the rock mass between the two levels before and after the injection of grout. After the grout injection phase was completed to a satisfactory level of confidence, rehabilitation activities started on the extraction level by taking out the now consolidated material from inside the drift in 2 m advances from under steel sets initially constructed in secured ground.Controlled blasting was the key aspect to the success of the initiative to open up just enough of the drift to systematically support the rock mass before the next set was installed. The systematic support consisted of in-cycle shotcrete sprayed over mesh pinned to the exposed rock, as effectively as possible, with splitsets before spiling the next advance’s protection canopy with rebar. Once secure, a combination of steel set and pumped concrete was installed as the final support. In 1998, the Concentrator Modeling Center was established within the Coleraine Minerals Research Lab, Coleraine, Minnesota, to develop models for simulation of iron ore processing plants, and to assist plant operators in improving performance of their aging plants. The short-term objective was to develop necessary models for reliable simulation using conventional techniques, while the long-term objective was set as liberation-based modeling and simulation of these plants. The short-term objective was achieved in 2002 after the development of models for magnetic separators, hydro-separators and fine screens. A project funded by the U.S. Department of Energy was carried out to demonstrate the capability in improving iron ore processing at the Minorca plant. As a result of this study, a 10% improvement in throughput at the plant was obtained, and simulation became a desired tool for plant operators. A significant step in the long-term objective was reached in 2005 with the development of a liberation model. This was followed by incorporation of models capable of processing liberation data into the software. By early 2007, the Concentrator Modeling Center had the capability of performing liberation-based simulation of entire plants.

Keywords: Tannin gel, Palladium, Separation, Redox We have developed the novel recovery system of palladium from wastes, which is simple and generates little secondary waste in comparison with the conventional recovery processes, using tannin gel particles synthesized from condensed-tannin molecules. Pd is adsorbed onto the tannin gel particles through inner-sphere redox reaction mechanism: two-electron transfer from tannin gel to Pd(II) species, accompanied by ligand exchange between chloropalladium(II) complexes and tannin molecules. In addition, we propose the separation system of Pd and Au from Pd-Au mixture, which is feasible due to the difference in oxidization and reduction potential between Pd and Au species: PdCl3(H2O)? and PdCl42? are less adsorbable than Pd species containing fewer Cl, such as PdCl2(H2O)2 and PdCl (H2O)3+, while such a distinct difference between Au species is not observed.

Underwater explosions have been used as a test method for the determination of energy content of explosives for several decades. This is the only test method by which shock, gas heave and total energy values can be measured separately. The experimental data can be measured from the pressure-time curves measured by the pressure-recording unit. The shock energy is integrated from the shock peak area and the gas heave energy is calculated from the time interval between the primary shock wave front and the shock wave caused by the first bubble implosion. tb. Bubble period, tb, is the time of first bubble oscillation, the time which passes after the shock peak front to the first bubble peak. The total energy value is the sum of these two partial energies.

Andros Analyzers Incorporated has designed and built two prototype continuous methane monitors capable of being mounted on a mining machine'. These instruments were designed for in-mine safety use. The monitors incorporated an NDIR optical/electronic analyzer design in which the response to the sample gas (methane in air) was achieved by synchronous detection and measurement of the amplitude oscillations of the trasmitted energy from an infrared source caused by the pressure modulation of the sample gas within the optical cell. Zero and span stability were to be achieved by the amplitude modulating of the infra-red source and using detected signal to correct for optical/electronic system variation. This design effort was to simplify and reduce the cost of the major components while eliminating the need for daily calibration. This report is the final report on this effort.

MR. McKEEVER: I think we had to start some- where. The proceeds of the beltbuckles and hard hat stickers will certainly be a beginning in a scholarship for some of our young people. And maybe, you know we might even get one of them sometime to go to the University of Oklahoma. A few years ago the luncheon speaker for tomorrow, Brooks Mitchell, got a few of the mine presidents together and we spent a full five hours of just dedicated listening to Carl Terzian. We listened basically on three subjects: how to work with the media, how to work with image, and how to identify with our political systems and those who are in them. I remember that as one of the turning points in my perspective on how our system really works. This gentleman who will be addressing you today, Mr. Terzian, will be conducting about a three-hour session tomorrow. And it's a shame that our other activities will not allow some of the golfers to probably be there. Those of you who can come to the session tomorrow morning will find it most rewarding. A little bit later on we will also have a panel session. And I see all of the panelists are here except for Bob Golten, but I understand that he is registered. We should have a full afternoon session with Charlie and his panel. When we started working on this, we naturally went back to Carl Terzian to give us some guidance. If there is anything wrong with your session, it's my fault because he knows how these should be done and he guided us along the way. One thing that I am sorry, it wasn't his fault necessarily, is that Harry Reasoner will not be with us for lunch tomorrow. Brooks Mitchell is going to make all of the PR he can out of the fact that Harry got scratched and he got in place for him. Brooks gave me one comment along that line. He said, "Do you know what you get when you cross a gorilla with a computer"? Of course I bit on that. He said. "Well, you get a Harry Reasoner." A little over a month ago I was invited out to California to Woodbury University at Carl Terzian's insistence. I happened to be sitting by one of his vice presidents. It was a formal affair. We had to wear tuxedos and everything and Mr.Green was sitting there and he said, "You know," he didn't know who I was at that time, but he said, "You know Carl really didn't want this formal affair. Said he had a couple of friends coming from the coal mining industry and they wouldn't know what to do with tuxedos." So with that Carl, we will start this little session and it's your mike. MR. TERZIAN: Thank you very much Ira. Let me begin by expressing my appreciation to the men and women of the Institute for allowing me to be here. I'm deeply concerned about my reputation, my image and don't want you to get the inference that I am responsible for Ira McKeever's image. Nobody could be responsible for that! But it is a great case in point that we all should be concerned about our images. I guess tomorrow morning from about 8:30. a.m. to about 11:30 a.m. we are going to do a? hopefully, a productive and very pleasant expertence for all of us in this growing field and great interest that people have in the area of image. I happen to be from Los Angeles. I have a national firm which has handled about 600 corporations', over the years through the areas of public relations,' community, civic involvement all built around a strengthening and safe guarding our precious, free enterprise system. When plotted as head vs. volume, fan curves start high and decrease in head with increasing volume while mine head curves start low and rise with increasing volume. Their intersection is the system operating point. But wait a minute: Isn't head loss a negative number, a debit? And isn't fan head an energy addition, a credit? This, as every ventilation instructor knows, is often a stumbling block to student or audience comprehension. It is possible to use the intuitively correct curves - pressure losses as negative values and energy additions as positive values-and still obtain the correct operating point: adding the two curves produces a third curve that intersects the x-axis at the operating point, the point at which the fan energy input exactly matches air circulation energy loss. Using this technique also makes it easier to account for outside influences on the system, such as natural ventilating pressure; with the standard approach it is quite easy to add or subtract such influences to the wrong curve. This approach can be extended to the graphical solution of any series/parallel circuit or ventilation network. The results are the same, and the approach is logically consistent and less confusing.

Environmental impacts from acidic mine drainage are growing national concerns that are particularly acute in the headwaters of the Rocky Mountain region. In the Black Hills of South Dakota, approximately one thousand mines are inactive or abandoned, most of them in the headwaters of major drainages. This paper examines the Bear Butte Creek basin, a heavily mineralized watershed with significant historical mining impacts and a surface gold mine permitted in 1997. The watershed loses its surface discharge to swallow holes in the karstic Madison Limestone. The integrity of the aquatic ecosystem was monitored with a suite of sitespecific bio-indicators. Stream surveys covered the entire reach of Bear Butte Creek from near its headwaters to the swallow holes in the Madison aquifer. Data from the stream surveys, water-quality sampling, and bio-indicator surveys clearly showed that water-quality impacts are limited mainly to Strawberry Creek and to the area of Bear Butte Creek near and downstream of the town of Galena.

The subsurface investigation for the Reach 4 Tunnel was expected to be completed in a single phase. This assumed that data from two nearby previous tunnels, combined with limited new subsurface information and surface mapping would be sufficient to characterize the rock behavior. Unforeseen rock conditions and complex faulting led to the recommendation for a second phase. This decision was not reached easily, as much of the follow-on work required helicopter support, and associated costs. The second phase of drilling found significantly more variability than the first phase and led to a very different and better understanding of the geologic and geotechnical conditions, and rock characterization.
