Glencore’s Strathcona Mill has recently evaluated a pyrrhotite depressant combination of diethylenetriamine (DETA) and sodium metabisulfite (SMBS) to improve its overall plant pyrrhotite- pentlandite (Po-Pn) selectivity, with the aim of producing a higher quality nickel concentrate. In a previous paper, key findings from a comprehensive lab-scale program (completed at the XPS Centre) were summarized where, of the depressants tested, DETA/SMBS combination was found to be the most effective in improving the Po-Pn selectivity. The present paper describes the metallurgical program recently completed at Strathcona Mill; DETA/SMBS evaluation on select plant “grab” samples as well as the major results of three DETA/SMBS plant trials conducted on several plant ore feeds (long-term testing). Interestingly, it was found that there was variable success in using DETA/SMBS depressants on the different plant ore feeds; DETA/SMBS (dosage: 25/50 g/t milled feed) on lower Cu feeds demonstrated a ~2% Ni recovery increase at the same Ni grade. On the other hand, higher Cu feeds demonstrated virtually no benefit from DETA/SMBS at the same plant dosage, suggesting that higher DETA/SMBS dosage (at specific locations) than that tested is required to overcome the increased Cu-DETA complexation for these particular feeds. Glencore Nickel – Sudbury Integrated Nickel Operations owns and operates Strathcona Mill which has been processing Ni-Cu ores from the Sudbury Basin since 1968. The valuable sulfides are pentlandite (Pn) – (Ni,Fe)9S8 and chalcopyrite (Cp) – CuFeS2, majority of the sulfide gangue is pyrrhotite (Po) – Fe(1-x)S [0 < x ≤ 0.125] which is present in two forms: hexagonal Po (Fe9S10) and monoclinic Po (Fe7S8) (Multani & Waters, 2017; Lawson et al., 2014). Currently Strathcona Mill processes ore mined from two primary sources from the Sudbury area and produces two concentrate streams: (1) nickel-copper concentrate that is sent to the Sudbury Smelter; and (2) copper concentrate that is shipped to the Fonderie Horne (Glencore Copper, Rouyn-Noranda).

"Biohydrometallurgy is the use of microbiological reactions to assist in the extraction of metals. Bioleaching offers an innovative alternative for the treatment of refractory gold-bearing sulphides (1). One particular cost advantage of bioleaching is the potential to enhance gold extraction after only partial sulphide oxidation. The apparent selective sulphide oxidation is more prevalent where the refractory gold is associated with arsenic and antimony (2). Oxidation of the pyrite minerals and arsenopyrite at different oxidation rates can result in high gold extractions at relatively low levels of sulphide oxidation due to preferential, or selective, oxidation of the arsenic mineral. Arsenic extraction rates in a bioleach process typically exceed the iron extraction rate. Therefore, in concentrates in which the precious metals are principally associated with arsenic minerals, liberation of the precious metals may be possible with high recoveries and less than complete sulphide oxidation. The capital and operating cost advantages of partial sulphide oxidation are inherently obvious and are briefly illustrated herein.Ultra fine milling (UFM) is another alternative for enhancing gold extraction from refractory sulphides. Some refractory gold is simply particle size sensitive and UFM can improve gold extraction without the need for costly sulphide oxidation (3). Fine grinding technology for enhanced gold recovery developed by Metprotech, South Africa, is currently producing 2 - 4 micron ground product using a single pass, stirred ball mill. Proper application engineering has ensured that plug flow occurs through the mill. Plug flow from the feed inlet at the bottom of the reactor ensures that short circuiting of feed does not occur and as a result, the mill product does not require classification.A combination of UFM as a pretreatment for bioleaching could provide a mechanism for enhanced selective sulphide biooxidation and/or increased overall gold extraction following biooxidation due to improved particle liberation ( 4). The effect of UFM on biooxidation costs will be discussed. Only sulphide concentrates are considered herein for application of UFM in combination with biooxidation."

Long, high capacity, highly tensioned, cable bolts (strand bolts), stiff enough to be installed with resin like a solid bolt, yet flexible enough to be used in any lengths, have been widely used in Australian coal mines since the early 1990?s. A brief history and update on recent developments of this technology is provided. The first major US trial of this Australian technology, has recently taken place at BHP Billiton?s San Juan longwall coal mine in New Mexico. Thirty-five foot long, high capacity, highly tensioned, post-grouted cable bolts are being used to provide active secondary support of intersections in areas where operator safety and life of mine considerations are paramount, and standing support cannot be installed for reasons of equipment access. The cable bolts are resin anchored into overlying sandstone channels, tensioned, and post-grouted. The installation procedure and support results for these highly tensioned cable bolts are given.

A mineral survey of the Fisher Gulch RARE II area (A5299), Trinity County, California was conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines and U.S. Geological Survey. The Bureau of Mines was responsible for detailed examination of mines, prospects, and mineralized zones; the Geological Survey conducted geological, geochemical, and geophysical studies of the area. The area is underlain by the Salmon Hornblende Schist. Tonalite stocks 1.5 mi (2.8 km) to the east and northeast of the area intrude the schist and are closely associated with the nearby nines (Cox, 1967). The mines have quartz veins containing sulfides and gold in shears trending east to north past in the schist and tonalite (Hotz, 1972). Strewn and terrace gravel s occupy most of the drainages, many have yielded substantial quantities of gold.

Metallic droplets can remain attached to solid particles within liquid slags, resulting in production losses in several movement of solid particles in the liquid slag in a system, considering the attachment of liquid metal droplets to solid slag and on the resulting microstructures is investigated as a function of the velocity of the particles. For all wetting For the amount of metal attached to the particle, a clear trade-off was found between the speed of motion of the solid particle and the wetting regime.

Energy West Mining Company (EWMC) has implemented a geologic program for improving stability and support requirements along deep two-entry longwall gateroads at its Deer Creek Mine operations located near Huntington, Utah. Together with geotechnical monitoring and concurrent review of mine seismicity in cooperation with MTI staff, it has become possible to improve longwall layout designs for two seam extraction of the Hiawatha and Blind Canyon seams. The geologic program consists of surface and in-mine exploration drilling, surface and in-mine geologic mapping, rock mechanics testing and detailed measurements of changes in depositional and structural conditions during development of every longwall gateroad. The geotechnical program consists of underground measurements at seven locations in two neighboring mining districts located in the Hiawatha and Blind Canyon coal seams under moderate to deep cover. Within the last five years, additional measurements, including data on seismicity and face conditions, have been incorporated into the data collection program for verifying the insitu coal strength and load transfer mechanisms for improving two-seam designs and support systems. Geologic mapping results are also used to predict local stability of headgate and tailgate entries, combining mine roof mapping, stratigraphic profiles of the coal and roof, and depth-of-cover information and dual-seam mine overlays, for use by operations personnel in planning roof and rib support for the retreating longwall sections.

Geophysical anomalies result from the passage of hydrothermal fluids through rocks. Interpretation of these anomalies, when integrated with available geological and geochemical data, assists the construction of a conceptual model of the original hydrology of the system. The original extent of a geothermal system is often indicated by the distribution of low resistivity argillic clay alteration. Quartz-adularia vein deposits, silica sinters or stockwork (often mineralised) cause local increases in resistivity. Appropriately chosen electrical techniques can therefore be used to help target such structures. Airborne magnetic surveys have also proven useful in New Zealand epithermal exploration, because hydrothermal fluids destroy magnetite causing extensive demagnetisation anomalies. Ground magnetic surveys can sometimes be useful for geological interpretation on a local scale. Positive gravity anomalies may occur as a result of mineral precipitation (silica or calcite) in high porosity host rocks, while negative gravity anomalies can result from hydrothermal fracturing and leaching of relatively dense host rocks. The relative merits of these geophysical techniques as used in the exploration of epithermal mineral prospects are discussed, with particular reference to the Hauraki Goldfield. The preferred method for defining zones of quartz veining/silicification is vector or tensor gradient resistivity. Exploration strategies and technique refinements are suggested as a means of improving the resolution of potentially mineralised target structures, in a more efficient and cost effective manner.

The Chambishi Metals Cobalt Plant in Zambia has recently installed a novel oxidation/precipitation pressure leach process as part of the COSAC (CObalt from Slag And Copper as by-product) Project. Aniron-cobalt-copper alloy, produced by the carbothermic reduction of slag, is atomized and pumped to the COSAC Leach Plant, where cobalt and copper are recovered as dissolved sulphate salts, andiron is rejected primarily as hematite. Cobalt and copper are subsequently recovered as cathode metal in the existing Chambish ioperation by conventional electrowinning. This paper examines the challenges faced during the design and subsequent successful commissioning of the COSAC Leach Plant. The challenges discussed include alloy handling, autoclave design, autoclave cooler design, residue liquor recovery and the water balance design. Enhancing the understanding of gravity flow in caving operations is a key factor in the design, operation and success of caving methods. Consequently, much research has been performed to increase knowledge about gravity flow. Many valuable theories have been gained from different research approaches, which include physical modelling, numerical modelling and a limited number of full-scale tests. Recent advances in technology have allowed Codelco Chile to carry out trials using Smart Markers technology. This technology was used in Esmeralda mine’s Block-2 at El Teniente mine from August 2012 to January 2015. This paper aims to determine the characteristics of the extraction zone and obtain the data that will allow greater understanding of gravity flow for design and draw control purposes.The collected data from recovered markers were analysed using a linear interpolation of both the initial position of the markers and drawbell accumulated drawn tonnage. For each drawpoint in the trial, the regularity or irregularity of flow was analysed based on the recovered markers and the drawn tonnage. Correspondingly, the relationship between flow characteristics and observed fragmentation in drawpoints was analysed. The gravity flow of the Smart Markers revealed that current drawpoint spacing provides the interaction conditions of adjacent flow zones. However, it is possible to increase the drawpoint spacing while allowing caved rock to be extracted from the major and minor apexes.The results of this research also verified that full-scale test data are the predominant factor in the production level design and production control at El Teniente mine.CITATION:Garc&#233;s, D, Viera, E, Castro, R and Mel&#233;ndez, M, 2016. METALLURGICAL ACTIVITY in 1963 was again dominated by the insatiate demands of research and development conducted in conjunction with the nation&apos;s defense and aerospace programs. An increasing effort was noticeable throughout the year, however, to apply to the commercial field many of the processes and techniques that have been developed by government-sponsored research. Particularly effective has been the Industrial Applications Program of the National Aeronautic and Space Agency through which many of the technological advancements made during the course of NASA research and development have been published and released to the public. POWDER TECHNOLOGY Powder metallurgy techniques for fabricating metals, not long ago declared outmoded because of improved casting and shaping methods, have since made an astonishing comeback. Traditionally mechanical pressing of powder shapes has been employed when melting and casting was difficult or impossible, when phase relationships needed to be sidestepped, or when machining costs could be avoided. Hence, it has long been used for producing relatively small special shapes of high-melting metals and alloys. Small iron parts produced with a punch and die have been common for many years, but powder metallurgy techniques are now applicable to a wide range of materials and items. Hard-to-handle materials including refractory metals and their alloys are now rolled, forged, or extruded from billets made by sintering isostatically compacted powders. The major element of the powder metallurgy industry still comprises iron shapes, however, and two-thirds of the annual 100,000 tons of powder metallurgy products are made of iron. The largest single user of powder-forming techniques is the automobile industry which currently consumes 14,000 to 16,000 tons of iron powder per year. A typical 1963 model auto contained more than 100 pressed powder parts (e.g., transmission gears, timing gears, sprockets, ball joint suspensions) totaling 5 to 7 pounds per car. "Abstract With the development in the construction of heavily loaded structures, the necessity of pile foundations has increased. For the transfer of heavy loads, it is mandatory that the piles need to be socketed in the underlying rock strata. The load transfer in bored rock socketed piles is by end resistance or the combination of shaft and end resistance which in turn depends on the length of the rock socket. The determination of socketing length of the pile at present is mostly based on a few factors which affect the pile load transfer mechanism. The effect of all the possible factors involved, need to be studied in proposing guidelines for the design of rock socketing length of the pile. Analyses are carried out using finite element analysis software (PLAXIS 3D Foundation) to understand the influence of the thickness of overlying strata for different socket lengths of piles in weak rock. From the load settlement curves, the influence of the overlying soil on the rock socket length isobserved and an effective rock socket length is proposed.IntroductionThe determination of socketing length of the pile at present is mostly based on a few factors affecting the pile load transfer mechanism, which sometimes give a better design and sometimes an uneconomical design. Too much socketing length results in more construction time and higher costs. Therefore, the effect of all possible factors involved need to be studied in proposing guidelinesfor the design of t h e r o c k socket length of the pile.The factors that affect the termination criteria of the rock socketed pile are the capacity requirement, thickness and properties of the overlying soil, characteristics of the founding strata, drilling tools used, roughness of the rock socket and nature of loading.A comprehensive study was performed to understand all the above mentioned factors in different types of rocks. In this paper discussion is made on the settlement results, specifically the influence of overlying sand of different densities above a weak rock. pH effectively regulates the flotation of corundum through its control of the surface charge. Since collector ions function as counter ions in the double layer, the collector must be anionic when corundum is positively charged and cationic when it is negatively charged. Even a long-chained xanthate will float positively charged corundum. Association of the hydrocarbon chains of the adsorbed collector ions gives rise to increased adsorption and increased rate of flotation. Because of this phenomenon, neutral organic molecules aid flotation although the unionized collector cannot promote flotation independently. Na2SO4 was found to depress the flotation of corundum with animic collectors through ionic competition whereas the same salt activates corundum for flotation with cationic collectors. A close connection between ion association, electrokinetic behavior, and floatability is suggested. As part of the increasing interest in the physical chemistry of flotation, strong experimental evidence has been obtained which indicates that organic ions are adsorbed as counter ions by non-metallic oxide minerals mainly because of the electrical forces which exist at interfaces(1-3). Thus flotation of such minerals without activation should then be appreciable only when the mineral and the collector are oppositely charged. Since only limited work has been reported on the effect of surface charge upon flotation behavior(3) this general hypothesis on the flotation of insoluble oxide minerals has not been tested thoroughly. Investigating the flotation of a mineral for which extensive electrokinetic data exist yields a way to test this hypothesis more extensively. The electrokinetic behavior of corundum in solutions containing both organic and inorganic electrolytes has been studied quite thoroughly&apos; Electro-kinetic measurements have shown that in the case of corundum, simply by controlling pH the solid surface can be charged either positively or negatively. For this reason corundum was chosen for study. The object of this paper is to present a study of the flotation of corundum and to explain the results in the light of our knowledge of adsorption mechanisms gained from streaming potential investigations. This paper is concerned mainly with the effect of surface charge on flotation with anionic and cationic collectors, but in addition such flotation phenomena as collector hydrolysis, Van der Waals attraction between hydrocarbon chains, ionic competition, and activation are discussed. While the present paper is confined to a reporting of the data obtained and some of the more immediate conclusions, it will be seen that the results, in combination with those on other systems, do promise a

In this study, a combination of cathodic arc physical vapor deposition (PVD) and molten salt electrolysis methods were used to obtain ZrB2 layers on AISI 304 grade stainless steel surface. Prior to boriding, steel surface was coated with metallic zirconium via cathodic arc PVD method and then the zirconium coated steel was borided by molten salt electrolysis. Well adherent, dense, ZrB2 layers are formed on the substrates. The thickness of the ZrB2 layer showed dependence on the thickness of the metallic Zr coating layer and the time of boriding. During the boriding process the alloying elements of the substrate also took part in the coating structure depending on their diffusion characteristics.

Crucible melt extraction yields short metal fibers with eqivalent diameters as low as 50 µm from almost arbitrary metals and alloys. Highly porous components can be made from such fibers by suitable deposition and sintering methods. This technology is being developed at the Dresden based Department of Powder Metallurgy and Composite Materials of the Fraunhofer Institute for Manufacturing and Advanced Materials (IFAM) and has been applied to gold alloys and iron-base alloys containing small additions of precious metals. From the manufactured gold fibers, sintered structures were made for decorative applications. Additionally, it was found that due to rapid solidification during the fiber formation, precious metals can be finely dispersed in ironchromium- aluminum (FeCrAl) and FeAl20 alloys. Good catalytic activity at elevated temperatures was found in compositions containing 3 wt.-% Ce and 0.5 wt.-% Pt.

The Egnatia Odos (Odos meaning road) is one of Greece’s largest ever highway construction projects and one of Europe’s most important. The Highway will assist in the connection of the Greek Ionian/Adriatic Coast with Turkey and the Black Sea reviving an historic Roman alignment “Via Egnatia” connecting Rome to Constantinople (now Istanbul). There are 74 twin tunnels (60 bored and 14 cut-and-cover) with lengths ranging from 160 m (175 yd) to 4,600 m (5,031 yd) and 100 m (109 yd) to 270 m (295 yd),respectively. The complex geology and resulting physical geography have had a major influence on both the design and construction of these tunnels. This paper describes the management, design and construction challenges of these numerous tunnels.

The New Tacoma Narrows Bridge is a classic suspension bridge founded on concrete caissons. Caisson construction was complicated by the proximity of the existing bridge piers, only sixty feet away. High capacity plate anchors were used successfully to moor the new caissons in currents as strong as seven knots during construction.

Gladstone Hill, a volcanic-hosted low-sulfidation epithermal prospect in the Coromandel Peninsula, is less than 1 km from the world-class Martha Hill Au-Ag deposit. Gold-silver-bearing quartz veins occur in Late Miocene andesitic volcanic rocks of the Waipupu Formation that are extensively altered. The occurrence, spatial distribution and temporal relationships of hydrothermal minerals have been determined along two cross sections that transect the Amaranth, Gladstone, Cowshed and Moonlight veins. Quartz and pyrite are ubiquitous along these sections. Adularia and chlorite are widespread, but both are scarce in wall rocks adjacent to the Moonlight and Cowshed veins. By contrast, rare hydrothermal albite and epidote are restricted to wall rocks surrounding the Amaranth vein. Illite, which replaces adularia, is widespread and grades laterally eastwards into a zone of interstratified illite-smectite that envelops the Moonlight and Cowshed veins. During late-stage hydrothermal activity, rare calcite formed at depth and uncommon kaolinite and alunite formed at shallow levels. The overall clay mineral zonation with illite grading eastward into interstratified illite-smectite reflects paleothermal gradients of &gt;220¦C to -170¦C towards the margin. The alteration assemblage of quartz, adularia, chlorite, albite, epidote, illite, interstratified illite-smectite and pyrite reflects formation from a near-neutral to weakly alkaline pH chloride water that contained low concentrations of CO2, Late calcite formed from very local descending steam-heated CO2rich water, whereas the rare assemblage of kaolinite and alunite formed from shallow steam-heated acid-sulfate water. Analysis of the available data indicates that the Martha Hill deposit and the Gladstone Hill area formed within a single large geothermal system. We infer that the Martha Hill deposit formed in the main upflow zone, whereas the Gladstone Hill area may have formed adjacent to this upflow zone.
