The Emeishan large igneous province (ELIP) of SW China is host to magmatic Ni–Cu–(PGE) sulfide and Fe–Ti–V oxide deposits which contain economic to subeconomic concentrations of precious and base metals. The formation of a given deposit-type (ie sulfide versus oxide) is thought to be related to the type of parental magma (ie high-Ti versus low-Ti) and the subsequent processes (ie fractional crystallisation and sulfide segregation), which allowed for metal enrichment.We examined the PGE of Baima and Taihe oxide-bearing layered mafic intrusions from the ELIP (Shellnutt, Ma and Qi, in press), and compared them with the nearby Xinjie and Hongge intrusions as well as with the Emeishan flood basalts. The PGE results for the two intrusions are contrasting. The Baima gabbroic rocks are almost PGE-barren (SPGE < 4 ppb) whereas the Taihe gabbroic rocks are variable, but generally much higher in PGE concentrations (SPGE < 2 to ~300 ppb), although the gabbros from both intrusions are enriched in platinum-subgroup PGE (PPGE = Rh, Pt and Pd) relative to iridium-subgroup PGE (IPGE = Os, Ir and Ru). Cu/Zr, Ni/Ir, Y/Pt, Cu/Pd and Ni/Ir systematics suggest that the Baima rocks were derived from a relatively evolved, mafic, S-undersaturated parental magma that was affected by earlier sulfide segregation. In contrast, the Taihe rocks record evidence of both S-saturated and S-undersaturated conditions and that the parental magma was likely emplaced very close to S-saturation. Through comparison of the PGE contents in the Emeishan flood basalts and the Emeishan oxide-bearing intrusions, we provide a self-consistent model for ELIP that the PGE budget in a magma is not strictly controlled by magma series (high-Ti versus low-Ti), but very much by crustal contamination.CITATION:Ma, G, Shellnutt, J G and Qi, L, 2015. The Mesozoic iron oxide-copper-gold (IOCG) mineralisation in southern Perú and the northern Chile coastal IOCG belt have emerged as two of the major exploration targets in the Central Andes in the last two decades. These Mesozoic Andean IOCG deposits formed in two mineralisation epochs, the Middle-Late Jurassic (170–150 Ma) and Early Cretaceous (130–110 Ma), with the major Cu-rich IOCG deposits located in the Early Cretaceous mineralisation belt. The early studies in some IOCG centres support a magmtic-hydrothermal model for both Cu-rich IOCG deposits and broadly contemporaneous Cu-poor ‘Kiruna-type’ magnetite deposits. However, recent evidence from field, geochronology, fluid inclusions and stable isotopes show that in the major Central Andean deposits (eg Raúl-Condestable, Mina Justa in southern Perú, La Candelaria-Punta del Cobre and Mantoverde in northern Chile), the incursion of evaporite-sourced basinal brines or sea water may be a prerequisite for economic Cu mineralisation. Moreover, the Cu-poor massive magnetite deposits could be interpreted as a product from iron oxide melt, with minimal intervention by non-magmatic fluids. Therefore, they could represent two contrasted deposit types and contain little genetic relationships. The different roles of magmatism during the Mesozoic are responsible for the variable mineralisation in the Central Andes, including IOCG, magnetite and ‘manto-type’ deposits. EXTENSIVE research and development was performed on the manganese-copper vibration-damping alloys to determine the relationship between the properties of the alloys and variations in composition, fabrication, Mid heat treatment. Mn-Cu alloys with unusually high specific damping capacity, 20 to 25 percent at a stress of 5,000 psi, have also the following useful properties: Tensile strength, 90,000 to 110,000 psi; yield strong, 60,000 to psi; elongation, 20 to 25 percent; hardness, 90 Rockwell B; and fatigue limit at, 28,000 to 30,000 psi. Both standard and special methods of testing were employed to obtain data on strength, modulus, hardness, resistivity, dilatation, micro-structure, crystal lattice, and damping capacity. The extensive tabular and graphical data on these properties are presented for alloys containing 50 to 85 percent as quenched d solution) and after various aging treatments. Expansion coefficients for all Mn-Cu solid solutions are graphed and a dilatometer study of contraction during aging is reported. Although high damping capacity is associated with aging to precipitate a-Mn from solid solution, with a cubic-tetragonal transformation and with the occurrence of antiferromagnetic ordering in Mn-Cu alloys, a tenable theory of the damping mechanism has not been reached.

"The results of laboratory evaluations were used to compare the potential of two alternative, biomass-derived fuels as a control strategy to reduce the exposure of underground miners to aerosols and gases emitted by diesel-powered equipment. The effects of fatty acid methyl ester (FAME) biodiesel and hydrotreated vegetable oil renewable diesel (HVORD) on criteria aerosol and gaseous emissions from an older-technology, naturally aspirated, mechanically controlled engine equipped with a diesel oxidation catalytic converter were compared with those of widely used petroleum-derived, ultralow-sulfur diesels (ULSDs). The emissions were characterized for four selected steady-state conditions. When fueled with FAME biodiesel and HVORD, the engine emitted less aerosols by total particulate mass, total carbon mass, elemental carbon mass and total number than when it was fueled with ULSDs. Compared with ULSDs, FAME biodiesel and HVORD produced aerosols that were characterized by single modal distributions, smaller count median diameters, and lower total and peak concentrations. For the majority of test cases, FAME biodiesel and HVORD favorably affected nitric oxide (NO) and adversely affected nitrogen dioxide (NO2) generation. Therefore, the use of these alternative fuels appears to be a viable tool for the underground mining industry to address the issues related to emissions from diesel engines, and to transition toward more universal solutions provided by advanced engines with integrated exhaust aftertreatment technologies. IntroductionDiesel engines have been the workhorses of modern society for industrial and transportation enterprises. Diesel engines of all generations are extensively used in a variety of light-, medium- and heavy-duty applications in underground mining operations around the world. Fuels obtained from various sources and with wide-ranging chemistries have been combusted in diesel engines. However, the bulk of the currently used fuel can still be traced to nonrenewable petroleum sources. The petroleum-derived diesel fuels are primarily made up of saturated acyclic hydrocarbons (parafins or alkanes), aromatic hydrocarbons (arenes or aryl hydrocarbon), and unsaturated hydrocarbons with double bonds (olefins and alkenes). Improvements in the quality of petroleum-based diesel fuels was identified in federal regulations as an important piece in resolving the puzzle of diesel engine emissions (Environmental Protection Agency, 2001, 2004). The reduction of U.S. diesel fuel sulfur content below 15 ppm had the effect of lowering sulfate emissions and enabling the development and implementation of catalyzed emissions control technology across a wide spectrum of applications."

"INTRODUCTION This paper is one of many reporting on various aspects of the Bureau of Mines program during World War II directed toward alleviation of shortages in certain critical minerals some of these papers are published as technical papers information circulars, and reports of investigations, of the Bureau of Mines or in technical journals.The investigation described in this report was begun as part of the Bureau, of Mines program to develop acid processes for the extraction of alumina from low-grade bauxites and clays. A domestic shortage of high-grade bauxite suitable for treatment by the Bayer process became acute as a result of World War II; and intensive search for a practical acid process using lower-grade alumina-bearing raw materials was therefore warranted.A survey of the various methods for extraction of alumina from clay has been presented in an early Bureau of Mines publication. 4/ The principal barrier to the successful operation of an acid process has been the difficulty experienced in developing a suitable commercial method for purifying the crude aluminum salts after the clay extraction is complete. Iron salts are the foremost contamination influence. A review of the more prominent procedures that have been proposed for separating iron and aluminum salts can be found in the well-known text on aluminum by Edwards, Frary, and Jeffries. 5/The majority of acid processes to extract alumina from clay employ sulfuric acid as the leaching agent, and the purification is thus reduced to the separation of iron and aluminum, sulfates."

The objectives of this effort were to: 1) Develop and validate start-of-shift operational inspection procedures to be used by operators of mobile, self-propelled equipment used in surface mining operations; 2) Evaluate user acceptance of the developed procedures; and 3) Recommend methods and media for presentation of the developed procedures to the user population. Mobile, self-propelled surface mine equipment requiring start-of-shift inspection was identified. Subsystems amenable to operational inspection were identified. The procedures addressing all safety critical subsystems on each equipment type were then developed and validated. The inspection procedures developed were those that could be performed largely from the operator's station. User acceptance was evaluated during on-site data collection visits to surface mines. Representatives of the user population reviewed the procedures and were then interviewed. Recommendations for the methods and media of presentation to the user population were developed from information obtained in: 1) Review and analysis of instructional technology literature applicable to this area; 2) On-site data collection; and 3) Analysis of the working environment and characteristics of the user population.

In this paper, the research effort in simulating the operation of underground coarse-coal hydrotransport systems (UCCHS) is summarized. The equipment of the system to be simulated is already optimally selected by using an analytical optimization model. The purpose of the simulation model is to test the performance of the system and to obtain the distribution of the operating parameters such as water and power consumption, amount of slurry delivered to the preparation plant, etc. Knowledge of the distribution of these parameters is essential for the efficiency of the design and the operation of the system.

Coal, America's most abundant fossil fuel, is expected to play a key role in our pursuit of energy independence. A substantial increase in coal exploitation will be required if we are to fulfill our future energy needs. It is essential that new developments continue if stable coal prices are to be achieved and maintained. The challenge of the mining industry is to continue these developments in the face of problems related to increasing labor costs, inflation and environmental restoration. With expectations of increased activity in surface coal mining, the U.S. Bureau of Mines has authorized this study to determine the preliminary economic and technologic feasibility of underspoil haulage in area strip coal mines and to identify geologic and geographic areas where such a system could be used. These objectives were met by literature search, data-gathering visits to several active area strip mines and by analyzing various haulage systems that were superimposed on three model mines. Potential advantages of such a system include: 1) improved mine design; 2) lower mine operating costs; 3) improved land reclamation; 4) lower manpower requirements; 5) lower mobile equipment requirements; and 6) smaller, less sophisticated maintenance facilities.

The Butte quartz monzonite is the host rock for early porphyry copper style mineralization and subsequent mesothermal-epithermal, enargite-gold style veining that transects the district. The east-west Anaconda system veins sustained mining for over a century. They include the Emma, Anaconda-Original, Syndicate, Badger-State and Alice-Rainbow veins, each with strike lengths of more than 3,660-m (12,000-ft) and vertical continuity in excess of 1,370-m (4,500-ft) with mining widths from 1.5- to 15-m (5- to 50-ft). These characteristics are unique to Butte. The incredible dimensions and tenor of these veins have yet to be surpassed and Butte is still touted as being the “Richest Hill on Earth.” The Anaconda Company was formed in 1895 to develop underground copper reserves in the district. It eventually consolidated all operations under one company. Production from underground mining continued through the mid-1970s. Openpit mining in the Berkeley pit began in 1955 with the extraction of supergene ores, along with the remnants of deeper horsetail zones inaccessible to the underground mines.

In collaboration with Kennametal Inc. and corry rubber corporation, the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) developed a drill bit isolator to address noise overexposures associated with roof bolting machines in underground coal mines. NIOSH laboratory studies confirmed that the drill bit isolator reduces noise during drilling. Field studies were needed to confirm that a noise reduction could be obtained under working conditions and that the device was sufficiently durable. This paper reports results of field tests of the device conducted at five underground coal mines. Noise reduction was assessed by comparing the operator?s noise exposure during drilling with and without the drill bit isolator. Durability was assessed by recording the number of holes and total feet drilled with each bit isolator until either the test period ended or the device failed. The results from these tests showed that the device is an effective noise control in a mine environment. The field-tested drill bit isolators provided a noise reduction of 3-5 db(A). Of nine devices tested for durability, five exceeded 610 m (2,000 ft) drilled and two exceeded 762 m (2,500 ft) drilled before failure. Durability issues found in the field tests led to final production optimizations that have resulted in a commercially available product for drilling with 35-mm- (1.3-in.-) diameter roof bits and hexagonal drill steels.

This paper describes the progress accomplished at the Noranda Technology Centre in the field of three-dimensional computer-aided underground blast design. Traditional methods of laying out underground blasts are reviewed, and the new computer-aided approach is described. Time savings achieved through the use of BLASTCAD can be advantageously used to better engineer blasts, using models and blast vibration analysis. Future work involving the attachment of blast models directly to the system is also addressed.

In addition to the geologic risk of a particular project, the criteria that an international exploration company (æIECÆ) utilises when making an investment decision in a particular country should also include a critical analysis of the political, judicial and fiscal regime of the host country. A key investment criteria of an IEC is mineral tenure and the security and continuity of that mineral tenure under the host countryÆs existing legal system as well as the host countryÆs overall legal, political and fiscal framework, the latter of which can affect the projectÆs overall economic viability in a number of ways. The authors, Steve Vaughan and Michael Bourassa of Aird & Berlis, Toronto, Canada, have taken the position that developing an understanding of a countryÆs legal tradition is a crucial first step in analysing the mineral regulatory regime of a particular country. This paper continues their efforts to overview the most recent legal trends affecting the worldÆs mineral industry and attempts to analyse, categorise, compare and contrast differing legal systems, cultural backgrounds and economic philosophies relating to the development of mineral rights in Pacrim countries and the resulting commercial, legal, and political framework which ultimately drives the relevant mineral legislation. For the convenience of organisation of this analysis, the authors have divided the Pacrim countries into four smaller groups, firstly, on the basis of their legal tradition and, secondly, by their geographic location:Common Law Countries: USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand; Spanish Civil Code Countries: Mexico, Central America (Panama, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Guatemala), South America (Chile, Peru, Ecuador, Colombia). Communist or Former Communist Countries: Mongolia, China, Russia. Countries of the Pacific Southwest: Phillippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, Indo-China (Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Thailand), Papua New Guinea. The discussion starts with an analysis of the various types of legal regimes, attempts to classify or categorise them, reiterates the necessity for the rule of law and those factors which encourage mineral exploration and development and discusses and recommends the expansion of a practical country competitiveness rating system developed by the Fraser Institute. In addition to the fundamental issue of mineral tenure û what it is and how secure it is û the paper discusses how different legal systems have shaped different approaches taken by individual nations to attract foreign mineral investment. The paper analyses the best practices and experiences accumulated in different Pacrim countries with varying legal traditions and identifies a practical country competitiveness rating system which the authors believe should be expanded to cover all minerally endowed countries. This rating system will permit countries to identify their mineral regime weaknesses and adjust their legal systems to better attract mineral investment and will also permit exploration and mining companies to compare their jurisdictional choices with those selected by their competitors.

Procedures for detecting and locating seismic sources are adapted to the case of entrapped miners. During an emergency the entrapped miner is likely to generate seismic signals, by knocking against the walls of the shaft. With a seismic array station deployed near the disaster area, the seismic signals can be recorded. Two algorithms are presented for the location of the source from the arrival times of a seismic phase: The first algorithm produces one, most probable location, under the assumption of constant velocity of propagation of seismic waves in the medium. The second algorithm is similarly applicable, however without any restriction on the seismic velocities in the medium between the source and the array. While the first algorithm uses an analytic approach, the second one is based on a trial and error procedure. The second algorithm gives locations with arbitrarily high accuracies, depending only on the accuracy of arrival time measurements and on the compatibility of the true velocity distribution and the assumed velocity model. The algorithm is shown not to require under certain conditions direct .arrival time measurements, thus eliminating a potential source of errors in the location of entrapped miner.

Selection of a suitable site for a metallurgical plant is crucial for the success of the business case. For a brownfield project, with the decision to locate the project on a site with existing production facilities and activities, the selection of the site has been made. For a greenfield project, important economic and logistical considerations include proximity to primary and secondary resources and/or to the market, infrastructure, and access to energy and water. National and regional aspects, including the social license to operate, can be decisive in final site selection. Key to recruiting and retaining a labour force are proximity to urban areas, along with weather and health conditions at the site. Risk factors include site geotechnical parameters and topography, contamination, as well as probability and types of potential natural disasters.

Bench-scale tests were performed by the Federal Bureau of Mines on lignite and subbituminous coal at pressures to 1,000 p.s.i.g. (pounds per square inch gage) in atmospheres of hydrogen or nitrogen to obtain information concerning the influence of pressure on carbonization of normally noncaking coals. The distribution of gaseous, liquid, and solid products as a function of processing pressure was determined. Except for special experiments, the carbonization was at 940° F. In a hydrogen atmosphere above 400 p.s.i.g., agglomeration of the solid residue (especially with lignite) became noticeable and increased directly with the processing pressure. Although in some instances the solid particles fused together, the mechanical strength of the agglomerate was always low. On the basis of visual inspection, the coals agglomerated in the following order of decreasing intensity: (1) Steam-dried lignite; (2) lignite; and (3) subbituminous coal. Addition of lignite tar in quantities to 25 percent by weight of charge did not increase agglomeration or change the carbonization characteristics of the coal.

"The mining industry tends to focus on very large numbers, whether it’s talking in terms of size of deposits, tons of material mined, the equipment used or the dollars spent. The numbers associated with mining projects are often in the hundreds of millions, but sometimes it’s the little things that can have the biggest impact.Take, for example, the Rosemont Copper Project in Arizona. Owned by HudBay Minerals, the Rosemont Copper project, when in production, is expected to be one of the largest copper mines in the United States, accounting for about 10 percent of total copper production with annual production expected to be 110 Mt/a (243 million lbs/year). However, the project is currently mired in a years-long permitting process. At the 2017 SME Arizona Conference in Tucson, AZ, Kathy Arnold, director of environmental and regulatory affairs for Hudbay Minerals, spoke about the project and the efforts to get it into production.She opened her presentation with the unfortunate news that her 2017 presentation would not be that much different than the 2016, 2015 or 2014 presentations she gave to the same conference. That’s because, as of Dec. 4, 2017, the project had been in the permitting process for 3,797 days, more than 10 years. The process began when Rosemont submitted its initial mine plan in 2006 and a revised one in 2017. The official start to Rosemont Copper’s National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) started in 2008.In June 2017, the project received its Final Record of Decision from the U.S. Forest Service, moving it a step closer to production. Yet it still faces stiff opposition from opponents while it works to secure the Clean Water Act Permit from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and to complete its final mine plan of operations.In her presentation, Arnold said the long process taught her many lessons, including approaching things with a different mindset. More than 130 pages worth of public comments have been collected over the years. The concerns expressed range from lighting issues to pavement to preserving land for a jaguar that was spotted on the property and named El Jefe.“A lot of things that people worry about seem to be small things, but we had to have a different mindset and be open-minded to the concerns,” Arnold said. “That is the commitment we made.”"

Not only do epithermal gold deposits provide many challenges in estimating mineral resources, the complexities of these deposits also provide technical challenges in assessing appropriate mining and processing strategies, as well as social and environmental planning and management. The characteristics of epithermal gold deposits include being highly variable with respect to geometry and gold grade distribution, the presence of other economic contributors, mineralogy, texture, rock strength, weathering and alteration overprint. These characteristics influence the economic value of mining projects in an interlinked manner. Consequently, successful exploitation of epithermal deposits requires a holistic approach, coupled with the effective integration of geological data to meet all aspects of mine development decision-making. This paper presents examples of the key technical challenges encountered in estimating and mining epithermal deposits. Solid-bowl (decanter) centrifuges are used extensively to dewater slurries in a wide range of industries. However, the application of decanters as classification devices is not as common. In this study, the performance of a continuous, pilot-scale, solid-bowl centrifuge was evaluated when classifying an ultrafine coal slurry containing nearly 60% material less than 10µm. The current study examined the effects of operating conditions on centrifuge performance. The test conditions included centrifuge bowl and scroll speeds, volumetric feed rates, solids concentration, and pond depth. Centrifuge performance was evaluated using partition curves, along with product yields and solids concentrations.
