"Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) entrusted to implement Monorail Systems in various parts of Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) with the objective to supplement the present transport system in MMR. The stretch of Monorail is starting from Sant Gadge Maharaj Chowk (SGMC) and extending up to Chembur Railway Station, divided into 2 phases. Construction of Phase 1 (Chembur to Wadala Depot) is complete and Phase 2 (Wadala Depot to SGMC) is under construction.Monorail runs on prestressed girder (guide beam) of span ranging from 20m to 28m supported on pier founded upon group of end bearing piles embedded in rock, pile group ranging from 2-4 piles of diameter 1000mm each.For the purpose of site characterization, geo-technical investigations were carried out along the alignment of Monorail system as mentioned above. These investigations included field and laboratory tests. The subsurface strata mainly consist of silty sand, gravel, underlain by marine clay extending up to stronger basalt rock with volcanic breccia. Overburden consisting of mainly marine clay ranging from 5.5m to 11m at all locations within the influence zone of settlement.The existing rigid pavement along of Sion-Koliwada and Anik-Wadala were constructed about 5 years prior to the construction of Monorail piers. Before laying the rigid pavement, to improve the geotechnical strength of subsoil (mainly marine clay), ground improvement using stone columns was undertaken by MMRDA. In light of limited right of way, the Monorail piers have been constructed in the median portion of the road. The line became operational on February 2014, in few months it was noticed that, in the vicinity of the Monorail piers, along Sion-Koliwada link and Anik-Wadala link, the Road Pavement Quality Concrete (PQC) panels adjacent to the Monorail piers started showing distress in form of nonuniform settlement of the concrete panels.Effect of pile foundation on pavements/PQC slab distress and possible causes of distress were investigated. Initially the distress was thought to be upheaval of monorail pier cap, but further investigations revealed the same to be soil settlement occurring over time. This paper describes the investigation carried out for identifying the cause of this settlement."

Mineral deposits examined in and near the Raywood Flats RARE II area have low potential for development. The Mill Creek Mine (fig. 1), has produced about 14,000 tons (13,000 t) of marble, and another 5.5 million tons (5.0 million t) of marginal marble reserves suitable for lime, chemicals, and cement production are estimated to remain at this deposit. However, nearly all the marble is outside the study area. The deposit is marginal because alternate sources of marble are closer to markets. A tungsten occurrence in the marble is too small and low grade to be considered a resource. Ten tons (9.1 t) of uranium- and thorium-bearing material have been mined from a pegmatite dike at the St. Patrick Mine. However, this occurrence also is too small and low grade to be considered a resource. More than 400 lode and placer claims have been located in or near the study area. There are no current claims or mineral, oil and gas or geothermal leases.

An often-overlooked parameter of flotation processing is the impact of surface chemistry. Flotation processing, being a heterogenous process is largely reliant upon the chemistry occurring at the interfaces between solid-liquid phases. Development of analytical techniques such as Auger electron spectroscopy, X-Ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and low energy electron diffractions (LEEDS) has allowed for a dynamic view characterizing surface composition and structures. The advent of ‘static’ systems, capable of measuring ultra-thin layers on surfaces at low concentrations, was the next step in surface analytical developments. In general, it is the low concentrations and fragmentation patterns which limit the analysis of certain chemical species at plant concentration ranges. At present, analysis of inorganic and organic surface modifiers by time of flight mass spectrometers with a variety of ionization techniques has become a common analytical method to measure chemical species on the outermost surface of mineral particles. By studying the relationship between surface analysis results with metallurgical outcomes, the implications of the presence of surface species can be determined. The presence of flotation activators or depressants can be established using Laser Ionization Mass Spectrometry (LIMS) and Resonant Ionization Mass Spectrometry (RIMS) which are highly versatile surface sensitive analytical techniques. A case study applied to sphalerite flotation in the Neves Corvo Cu-Pb-Zn concentrator and the implication inorganic surface modifiers have is presented. By determining the relative concentrations of Cu, Pb, oxidation products, Ca and other surface species in floated and rejected mineral particles, rationale for improving recovery and selectivity is elucidated. Introduction An integrated oil company has two options in approaching strategic planning. It has to decide whether it is in business for the long-term. I state this in all seriousness. Those who help manage public companies have the responsibility of good stewardship of other people's money. We must decide whether continued investment in our basic business will generate a reasonable rate of return. With a world surplus of petroleum production capacity, and continuing downward pressure on prices, this question should be addressed by all oil companies. And a positive answer is not necessarily a foregone conclusion in all cases. The decision should be made based on proven competence in finding and developing petroleum reserves on a cost-competitive basis with other producers, and on a frank analysis of future prospects. This should include a realistic assessment of the projected rate of return on specific investment projects. If a company did not pass these tests, its strategy could take one of four paths. Diversification First, it could diversify. But recent history suggests that oil companies are not good at managing other businesses. Second, it could seek a buyer for its business at the optimum return for its owners. Third, it could sell its assets on a piecemeal basis. And, fourth, it could adopt a longer-range plan of self-liquidation by living off current recoverable reserves. In other words, by not investing in exploration and development, it could maximize short-term profit and pass the money back to shareholders in the form of dividends. The Conoco component of DuPont has a below-average cost of finding petroleum, a good track record of efficient production, and a full plate of projects that pass the test of return-on-investment. In short, Conoco is in business for the long-term. That fact, in itself, determines at least one key element in strategy. This is to extend the life of the petroleum reserve base while at the same time maintaining maximum efficient rates of production to provide a strong cash flow. A company that is able to maintain a strong reserve base will ultimately see the value of those reserves escalate as world oil supplies tighten. Our planners expect this tightening to occur within the next decade as demand grows and production in non-OPEC areas of the world begins to decline. An exploration program tailored to meet the requirements of reserve replacement and current production should have two basic parts. Underground mine fires remain a concern for mine operators, posing a health and safety risk to mineworkers. In the last decade, the number of mine fires has decreased significantly. However, dealing with an unknown fire in underground mines can be a challenging task, which could lead to a hazardous condition for miners during an evacuation and rescue operation. A timely detection of a mine fire and monitoring its characteristics—namely, size and location—are of great importance in reducing the risk of mine fire injuries. A new, improved fire location algorithm has been developed and integrated into an atmospheric monitoring system (AMS) program by researchers from the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). This paper describes the new fire location model and presents the results of verification fire tests conducted at the Safety Research Coal Mine (SRCM) facility of the Pittsburgh Mining Research Division (PMRD) using the collected AMS data. NIOSH is endeavoring to develop workplace solutions to improve the detection of and reduce the risk of hazardous conditions in mines. The results demonstrate successful application of the improved fire location model and provide a useful tool for solving the problem of unknown fire location and reducing the risk of hazardous conditions.

Through the development of innovative in-line mineral quantification sensors, the possibility has arisen to apply modern control theory to implement automatic process control for electrostatic high tension (“HT”) roll separators. A pilot-scale set-up was constructed to enable continuous tests to be carried out. A typical dry mill feed was continuously pre-heated and separated with a modern lab scale HT roll machine. The mineralogy as well as mass-flow of the non-conductor stream was quantified in-line, and the combined streams were re-circulated in an endless loop by a combination of vibration feeders and a bucket elevator. A fractional factorial experiment was executed to determine the most significant control parameters of the HT roll separator. Then a multi-input, multi-output dynamic model of the HT electrostatic separator was extracted by the application of standard system identification techniques for automatic control. The most important control variable to ensure a stable product grade could be identified. This allowed a robust single-input, single-output controller to be implemented. The process variable and set-point was mineral grade and the control variable was electrode voltage. Roll speed was manually adjusted while the mineral grade was kept on set-point by the control system. The roll speed, where maximum mass flow and therefore maximum yield was produced on-grade, could therefore be rapidly determined. Atmosphere humidity and ore temperature served as disturbances. Some other adjustable parameters were kept constant during the experiments, namely feed mineralogy, splitter settings and feed rate. Delivery of maximum yield, with a controlled grade, can improve production while reducing the burden of complex manual tuning. Manual tuning previously involved coping with multiple parameters with uncertain cross coupling influences on the end result. Even the end result was typically only known after completion of mineral assays. Automatic grade stabilisation and yield optimisation for a HT roll separator bank requires in-line measurement of mineralogy and mass flow, as well as the implementation of a robust process control system.

The results of a two-year research effort aimed at improving communication systems in coal mines is reported. A review of communication methods presently used in coal mines is presented. Theoretical and-experimental results of a four pronged effort in the areas of (1) through-the-earth propagation, (2) paging system design, (3) improvement of wired telephone systems, and (4) carrier current systems are described. Auxiliary systems not included in the above are considered briefly. Various conclusions are drawn in light of practical constraints and the needs of the mining industry. The study clearly demonstrated the need for nine communications to be designed on system basis. The viability of new technology for providing reliable mine communication for improving mine safety and operating efficiency is shown.

As manufacturers and mine operators develop and implement proximity detection systems (PDSs), they need to be mindful of the systems’ compatibility with mineworkers’ tasks, and possible unintended consequences. Researchers at the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) interviewed mineworkers at mine sites that currently use or previously have used PDSs on mobile equipment, including shuttle cars, battery haulers and scoops. Mineworkers reported that mobile PDSs affect loading, tramming, section setup, maintenance and general work on the section. Mineworkers discussed the operational effects and increased burden, exposure and risk. Mineworkers also suggested that improved system task compatibility, training, logistics and PDS performance might help address these issues. Manufacturers and mine operators implementing this or similar technologies may also consider mitigating task incompatibilities up front, performing additional site-specific usability testing and restricting the use cases of the system to improve performance.

A study of the thermodynamic properties of magnesium chloride ammines was carried out with the ultimate objective that the thermal decomposition of the hexammine MgCl2.6NH3 may prove successful on a commercial scale for the manufacture of anhydrous magnesium chloride, which is required for the efficient electrolytic production of magnesium. The experimental data are presented in the form of an equilibrium diagram that aids the understanding of the conditions associated with the thermal decomposition of ammines

"INTRODUCTION This report describes the results obtained from a diamond-drill exploration project performed by the Bureau of Mines on the nickel deposits of the Yakobi Island, Alaska. The Federal Geological Survey 6/ completed a detailed geologic study and mapped the area during the summer of 1940, and a Bureau of Mines examining engineer 7/ made a preliminary examination of the deposits in June 1941, at which time core drilling was suggested as the logical means of determining the extent and grade of the deposits. Equipment and supplies were unloaded on the beach at Yakobi Island on October 21, 1941. The drills were moved to Bohemia Basin, where actual drilling operations wore begun under the direction of a Bureau of Mines engineer 8/ on November 7, 1941. Two core-drill holes were completed on December 7, 1941. Upon the request of the drilling contractor, operations were recessed owing to severe winter conditions. Work on the project was resumed April 27, 1942, under the direction of another Bureau of Mines engineer 9/ and was completed August 15, 1942. During the 1942 season, 13 core-drill holes were completed, and 10 surface pits and a tunnel were sampled. A total of 5, 191 feet of core-drill hole was drilled in 15 holes during the entire project. The results of drilling and sampling form the basis of this report."

The paper begins by defining local content and its scope at the subnational level. Specific recommendations for the design of local content policies to mitigate social, economic and governance risks are developed. The document then offers some recommendations regarding the role of partners in design, implementation, monitoring, and enforcement of local content policies.

"INTRODUCTION As a part of the program of investigation of domestic sources of manganese ore, mining engineers of the Bureau of Mines obtained and examined samples of ore from six properties in the vicinity of Pioche, Lincoln County, Nev., and from one property near Caliente, Lincoln County, Nev. As the ores were too low-grade to be acceptable for the direct production of ferromanganese, their amenability to concentration by ore-dressing methods was investigated.In general, the Pioche ores had a low manganese content and, owing to extremely intimate association of manganese minerals with iron oxide and nonmetallic gangue, were refractory to concentration by ore-dressing methods. Only two samples (Zero Gap and Wheeler ores) were amenable to the production of concentrates that would sinter to a marketable plus 35-percent manganese grade. The Prince Consolidated and Ely Valley No. 1.ores were roasted and sintered to produce lead-silver-zinc fumes. The residues were of possible value as manganiferous iron ore. No marketable manganese products were made from Calton semi-oxidized ore, but over 80 percent recoveries of lead, silver, and zinc were made by bulk sulfide flotation followed by Diming of the sulfide concentrate. No satisfactory results were obtained by treatment of Golden Eagle and Ely Valley No. 2 ores.The Cudverwell ore was amenable to the production of high-grade manganese concentrates by ore-drssing methods. However, fine grinding was required to effect mineral liberation, and loss of manganese as slime limited the mangenese recoveries obtainable.In the coarse of the investigations, many data were obtained and compiled, but for the sake of brevity, several data, of secondary importance have been omitted or condensed, and only the tests giving the more promising results are discussed in detail. For convenience, the report has been divided into two parts, one opertaining to the Pioche ores and the other summarzing results obtained by testing Culverwell ore."

"Cathodic and anodic reactions in an acidic nitrate medium were studied in reference to the production of electrolytic manganese dioxide from pyrolusite' (Mn02) ores by reductive leaching. Two USA ores were investigated. The reductant for the pyrolusite ore is produced cathodically in an electrolytic cell and can either be nitrous acid (HN02) or nitric oxide gas (NO). In this work emphasis was placed on the nitrous acid leach. In a high-temperature leach in a nitrous/nitric acid medium, manganese and silver are solubilized and iron is not. Anodic electrowinning of manganese dioxide from the acidic manganese nitrate electrolyte yields flaky y-Mn02, similar to that produced from sulfate and chloride electrolytes. Cathodic regeneration of nitrorts acid was studied in a membrane cell in 1.0 M nitric acid and 0.0 to 0.1 M nitrous acid on a' platinized titanium cathode. At cathode potentials ranging from +950 to +700 mV (SHE), cathodic reduction to nitrous acid takes place, at cathode potentials < +700 mV, cathodic reduction of nitrous acid to nitric oxide takes place. A conceptual process is presented and discussed.IntroductionManganiferous-silver oresLarge reserves of manganiferous-silver ores are present in the Southwestern United States and Latin America. These ores are generally refractory to hydrometallurgical methods of treatment, due to the insolubility of the higher oxides of manganese (Mn 4+) in all common lixiviants such as cyanide solutions, dilute sulfuric acid, nitric acid, ammonia, salt solution, thiosulfates, etc. The silver is either bound by the insoluble manganese, or is rendered inaccessible to cyanide leach solution by the surrounding manganese mineralization.Higher oxides of manganese will dissolve if they are first reduced pyrometallurgically to manganous oxide (Mn2+). This is a widely used pretreatment for manganese dioxide ores and subsequent dissolution in sulfuric acid is common. In order to avoid the pyrometallurgical pretreatment with its large energy requirements and gaseous emissions, fully hydrometallurgical processes have been proposed. These processes are based on the presence of a reductant in solution, in order to reduce the insoluble higher oxides of manganese to soluble lower oxides. Aqueous S02 has been proposed and tested on industrial scale by the U.S. Bureau of Mines. After washing, silver could be extracted by cyanidation. The neutralization of the pulp prior to cyanidation however causes problems in filtration and the reagent consumptions are high [1]. More recently, acidified thiourea and bacteria were proposed for the solubilization of both manganese and silver in a single leach step. High extractions were obtained, but drawbacks of these methods are high reagent consumption or slow kinetics [2,3]. For the options of manganese recovery from the leach filtrate, precipitation with persulfate or ammonium carbonate and ion exchange have been proposed. The proposed options for silver reclaim are precipitation with either zinc or Na2S and adsorption onto activated carbon."

"Introduction In 1925 the Bureau of Mines published as Technical Paper 346 a discussion of typical crude oils of the Western Hemisphere. That paper was one of a series of surveys of typical crude oils, and was the first of these to deal with properties of crude oils from countries other than the United States. The paper contains comments, tabulated data, and individual analyses of crudes typical of the producing districts of Canada, Mexico, Trinidad, Venezuela, Argentina, Colombia, and Peru; for comparison, it also has analyses of typical crudes from the chief producing districts of the United States.The Bureau of Mines undertook a study of foreign crude oils for two reasons: First, foreign fields are potential sources of supply for the United States; in fact, considerable quantities of some foreign crudes have already been imported. Second, these oils are very similar in physical and chemical properties to oils found in the United States, and a study of these resemblances has scientific value.After the publication of Technical Paper 346, the attention of the Bureau was called to the fact that the two analyses of crude oil from Venezuela which appeared in that paper were not completely representative of the production of that country. Samples of other types of oil were procured through the cooperation of Mr. R. Ogarrio, manager of the Texas Petroleum. Co., Huston, Texas, and officials of the following companies operating in Venezuela; British Controlled Oilfields, Ltd., Venezuelan Oil Concessions, Ltd., Creole Syndicate, and Venezuelan Gulf Oil Co.. Samples were collected and dispatched by Mr. D. 3. Park, representative in Maracaibo, Venezuela, of the Texas Petroleum Co. The value of the interest and cooperation of these agencies in obtaining the samples is gratefully acknowledged."

Major activities of the Bureau of Mines Explosives Research Center during fiscal year 1966 (July 1, 1965 to June 30, 1966) are reviewed briefly. Part 1 summarizes significant accomplishments of the projects that were active during the report period. Part 2 presents short abstracts of the publications that appeared in the Bureau series and in other media during fiscal year 1966. Publications issued after June 30, 1966, are noted where pertinent in foot- notes but are not abstracted. This Bureau of Mines report analyzes data on the physical properties of quartzite rock from the Crescent mine, Coeur d?Alene mining district, Kellogg, Idaho, to demonstrate the use of multivariate techniques. After regression, factor, component, cluster, and discriminant analyses are discussed, these techniques are applied to the Crescent mine data. Three appendixes contain some of the required mathematical and statistical detail plus heuristic examples of three multivariate techniques --component, cluster, and discriminant analysis.

One phase of the work of the Bureau of Mines in health and safety is promoting the use of safe, satisfactory, and reliable respiratory-protective devices. To insure that such devices will be available, the Bureau has established schedules of minimum-performance requirements for the approval of self-contained breathing apparatus (1),4/ gas masks (2), supplied-air respirators (hose masks, air-line respirators, and abrasive-blasting helmets, hoods, or masks) (3), dispersoid (dust, fume, and mist) respirators (4), and nonemergency gas respirators (chemical-cartridge respirators) (5). Approval tests of self-contained breathing apparatus are conducted by Health and Safety District B; approval tests of other types of respiratory-protective devices are conducted by the Branch of Health Research. Manufacturers of respiratory-protective devices may submit their equipment to the Bureau of Mines for approval under the requirements of these schedules. If the device, when tested by the Bureau, meets the schedule requirements, a certificate of approval will be granted, which not only states that the equipment has passed the schedule requirements but also gives information about the limitations of the device. If it is found at any time that approved devices do not meet the requirements of the pertinent schedule, the Bureau may rescind approval.

This paper examines innovation in relation to the availability of anew material: the metal titanium. The paper aims to highlight the need for the inclusion of entrepreneurial innovation as a necessary focus area in the development of a titanium metal value chain. Both the Department of Science and Technology (DST) and the Department of Mineral Resources (DMR) have identified the creation of titanium metals production capabilities as a key growth area for South Africa. Using historical literature as a source of data, the activities of selected innovators who used titanium metal as a central component in their success, were investigated. The origin of the process innovation behind the titanium metals industry, and two titanium product innovations: namely, medical implants and sporting goods, were detailed as case studies. It was found that individual innovators were responsible for the creation, and rapid growth, of the titanium industry and titanium product applications. There is a need to link the current research and development into titanium metals production with individuals and organizations capable of commercializing innovative processes and products.

Bureau of Mines personnel examined mines, prospects, and mineralized areas to determine the mineral resources and potential of deposits in the Bucks Lake and Chips Creek RARE II areas in Plumas and Butte Counties, California. These areas lie along the west slope of the Sierra Nevada on opposite sides of the North Fork Feather River and encompass an area of 62,800 acres (25,400 ha). Metasedimentary and metavolcanic rocks of the Pennsylvanian Calaveras Formation are intruded by plutons of Mesozoic age. Mineral; of economic iterest are in quartz veins in metasediments close to these plutons; they are principally gold and silver with minor amounts of copper, lead, and zinc minerals. Molybdenum, copper, silver, and tungsten minerals occur in tactite along metasedimentary-granitic rock contacts. In both areas, auriferous Tertiary channel gravels have been extensively developed. Asbestos occurs in ultramafic rocks in both areas, and a limestone deposit was explored in the Chips Creek area. Gold is the principal economic mineral in the Bucks Lake RARE II area. The Shenandoah Mine (fig. 1, no. 19) contains 7,500 tons (6,800 t) of indicated and inferred subeconomic gold resources in sulfide-bearing, silicified metamorphic rocks of the Calaveras Formation (table 1). Similar rocks have yielded gold at the Edman and Megowen Mines, adjacent to the area. A high potential exists for additional lode resources in the area around the Shenandoah Mine. Callahan Mining Corporation personnel believe a multi-million ton disseminated gold deposit underlies the property.
