The western united States is not usually noted for the production of fluorspar; however, many significant fluorspar districts do occur in the Rocky Mountain region and constitute a resource of sizable dimension and major potential. This is particularly true within the area of the West served by the rail lines of the Union Pacific Railroad (see Figure 1). Fluorspar deposits near the Union Pacific have produced over 1.3 million tons of finished fluorspar products from 2.3 million tons of ore. Approximately 80% of this production was of acid-grade and 20% of metallurgical-grade fluorspar. Production of ceramic-grade was negligible. Through the years substantial production has come from eight mining districts. Five of these have produced metallurgical-grade and three acid-grade. The best-known fluorspar producing area in the West is the Jamestown Mining District. It was one of the first producers of fluorspar in the western United States and is estimated to have produced over 500,000 tons of finished fluorspar from over a million tons of ore. The district encompasses approximately 36 square miles in central Boulder County, Colorado, about 9 miles northwest of the City of Boulder. Adsorption, electrokinetic and flotation studies were carried out. The maximum density of adsorption of guar gum was obtained at pH 7.5 on sphalerite and at pH 11.5 on galena. Flotation recovery of sphalerite was reduced only marginally by the presence of guar gum in the pH range investigated, whereas recovery of galena was reduced to about 20% at pH 12. Differential flotation tests on binary mixtures indicated that 10 ppm of guar gum can depress galena and separate it from sphalerite at around pH 12.1. Co-precipitation tests confirmed the formation of a metal ion-guar gum complex in the bulk solution, suggesting that this is the precursor to adsorption. The adsorption isotherms for both minerals followed Langmuirian behaviour, but adsorption of guar gum on galena was significantly higher than on sphalerite and dissolution tests indicated that the concentration of Pb ions released from galena was an order of magnitude greater than that of Zn ions dissolved from sphalerite

The application of modern secondary-recovery methods has made possible the the extraction of more than 13 million barrels of crude petroleum from the eastern part of the Delaware-Childers field Nowata County, Okla., over and above the production that might have :been expected by continuing primary production methods, including the use of vacuum. Foremost among the secondary-recovery methods used in this foil was the repressuring of the Bartlesville sand with air and gas through injection wells spaced on sym-metrical patterns. Between 1925 and 1945, about 51 billion cubic feet of air and gas were injected into the producing formation, and the total recovery was increased from, 25 million to about 40 million barrels of oil. To produce as much as possible of the 28 million barrels of recoverable oil remaining in the sand will require the initiation of systematic water-flooding projects on many properties and the continuation of air and gas injection on others.

A mineral survey of the Rough Hills WSA (Wilderness Study Area) in northeastern Nevada was done by the U.S. Bureau of Mines in 1985 at the request of the Bureau of Land Management. The WSA is comprised of 6,685 acres of mountainous, desert lands within the Elko District of the Bureau of Land Management. The survey entailed investigations of prospects or mineral occurrences to provide information on possible resources within the WSA. No mineral resources were identified in the WSA. The only historical mining activity was for placer gold at the Prunty prospect at the confluence of Copper Creek and the Bruneau River. Total gravel at the prospect is about 6,500 cubic yards; however, the survey showed significant gold values (greater than $0.10 gold per cubic yard) only in the southwestern portion. There, however, the gravel averaged less than $1.00 gold per cubic yard, and only about 3,000 cubic yards are present, a grade and yardage insufficient to be of commercial interest. The occurrence, however, may have value for recreational mining by hobbyists.

"INTRODUCTION The Gibellini manganese—zinc-nickel deposits, are in southeastern Eureka County, Nev, T. 15 N., R. 53 E. M.D.B.M. 27.5 miles south of Eureka, the county seat.The partly explored deposits, locally known as the Black Iron or Gibellini property, were examined in May 1944 by an engineer 3/ of the Bureau of Mines, who recommended that the deposits be explored further by means of core drilling. The proposed program called for drilling six diamond—drill holes, or eight if necessary, and for trenching at two places — 200 feet northeast and 280 feet west of the shaft on the main deposit.In 1946 the project was set up, and In July, of that year diamond drilling as started. Six holes were drilled for a total length of 1,198.5 feet. No trenching or other exploratory work as done. Work on the project was stooped. October 30, 1946.OWNERSHIPAccording to county records, the property comprises a group of 13 unpatented lode claims, and ownership is divided among Louis P. Gibellini,Louis P. Gibellini and wife (both of Eureka, Nev.), and the International Smelting & Refining Co., of Salt Lake City, Utah. Five claims of the group - the Black Iron No. 1, Black Hill No. 2, Manganese No. 3, Flat No. 1, and Flat No. 2 - are owned by Gibellini. Three claims - the Black Hill No. 1, Black Iron No. 3, and Manganese No. 4 are owned jointly by Mr. and Mrs. Gibellini, and the International Smelting & Refining Co. owns the remaining five - the Black Iron No. 4 and No. 5, and Black Hill Nos. 4, 7, and. 9."

"The Multiple Blasthole Fragmentation (MBF) model models multiple explosive charge contributions and the effect on fragmentation of delay timing with its associated scatter for each blasthole. The model uses near-field blast vibration attenuation parameters and the ground p-wave velocity as inputs for part of the in situ rock property to model rock fragmentation. It models most blast design parameters explicitly and simulates the effect of wave reinforcement due to the interaction of simultaneously arriving waves or diminishing cooperative contribution from long delay intervals between charges within a blasthole or among blastholes. The fragmentation size is calculated at three-dimensional grid points within a blast, and the fines and oversized blocks are treated explicitly. The model takes a surveyed irregular geometry of the free face of a blast as the calculation boundary.This paper presents a case study on applying the MBF model at an openpit mine. Near-field vibration measurements from signature hole blasts were conducted to obtain the stress-wave magnitude and attenuation parameters as well as ground sonic velocity. A production blast was then monitored with the corresponding fragmentation measured, serving as site-specific inputs to the MBF model. Various blast design scenarios were then simulated to develop ones that provide better fragmentation to improve mill throughput for the mine. IntroductionThe semiempirical fragmentation models currently found in the literature (Cunningham, 1987; Lownds, 1995) cannot explicitly model contributions from multiple blastholes with varying delay intervals. Most of these models are not three-dimensional. Furthermore, these models predict an average fragmentation size within a volume surrounding a blasthole and use the average size to generate a size distribution over the volume. The percentage of fines and oversize blocks is included in the distribution. Typically, such models are inadequate for predicting fines and oversize blocks (Cunningham, 1987)."

In the majority of metal and nonmetal mining operations, narrow vein deposits are being mined with slusher hoists. Thin; method of mucking is costly, due in part to its inherent labor intense operation and to its inability to muck 100 pct of the deposits. Mechanized equipment would greatly improve the material handling in narrow vein mining and would dramatically reduce the operational cost. The Compact Loader/Trammer, known as the "mini-mucker" has been developed to increase productivity of the load/haul/dump portion of the typical narrow vein mining cycle. This is Volume II of the final report and concerns the operation and maintenance of the mini-mucker. Volume I covers a general and design review of the activities on the subject contract and are available under separate cover.

Printed circuited boards contain considerable quantities of valuable metal, while also containing many environmental pollutants making them unsuitable for landfill. In this study the decomposition of common plastics used in printed circuit boards were studied. Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and polyethylene (PE) were heated in both C02 and argon atmospheres using a thermo-gravimetric furnace (TG) coupled to a mass spectrometer (MS). Soda ash Na2C03 and baking soda NaHC03 were used as reactants. The degradation temperatures and evolved gases are presented for single plastics and mixtures. Mixed plastics are shown to behave as a sum of the individual plastics. The mass loss temperature is the same in CO2 and argon. However, less residue is formed when heated in CO2.

The Inconceivable Wealth propaganda goes on apace. Premier King, at Vancouver, has stated that we still have, untouched, natural resources, "beyond the wildest dreams." Principal Currie, in an address before the Canadian Society in New York said that Canada's resources, "are as yet merely scratched and it is not possible to compute her almost fabulous natural wealth." Mr. Meighen, in the last election campaign announced that, "under the providence of God, Canada is more richly endowed, perhaps, than any other country in the world." Four years ago a despatch was sent to Premier King "on behalf of" this Institute advising him that "Inconceivable Wealth" in minerals in this country was assured. This was made as a statement ~f "incontrovertible fact." Specifically, this despatch stated that this wealth was on such a scale that the mining industry would in the future lead all others in this country. This inventory is still in effect as far as this Institute is concerned.

During the period from June to September 1943, the Bureau of Mines undertook an investigation of the Vial mine, near the village of Linden I in Iowa County, Wis., as part of a general investigation of the zinc-producing area of southwestern Wisconsin. The work was done when every effort was being made to increase the production of metals important to the Nation's war program. The Bureau completed 29 churn-drill holes aggregating 3,348 feet of bore in areas immediately north and west of the old Vial mine, which had been worked intermittently between 1908 and 1939. The drilling supplemented a previous drilling program by the lessees and disclosed the presence of two significant zones of mineralization.

A CBMM vem desenvolvendo um projeto com a equipe da Unicamp que compete na Fórmula SAE como um meio de difundir o conceito da aplicação dos aços microligados para aqueles que serão a próxima geração da tecnologia automotiva. O projeto foi iniciado em 2011 e praticamente todas as peças do protótipo foram trocadas de aço AISI A36 para vários tipos de aços microligados com limite de escoamento superiores a 700MPa. Esse trabalho apresenta exemplos de componentes onde as reduções em massa atingiram até 32%.

The Tifalmin porphyry copper district is located in the Star Mountains roughly 35 km north-east of the Ok Tedi mine. The district is a cluster of temporally and geochemically related porphyry copper deposits and their associated skarns. It covers an area of roughly 10 × 6 km and comprises at least three intrusions (Olgal, Futik and Kum Kom) where drilling has demonstrated the presence of porphyry copper mineralisation, and another three intrusions (Rattatat, Unfin and Pad 48) where porphyry copper mineralisation is strongly suggested by surface investigations and geochemical or geophysical signatures.Copper and gold mineralisation was first discovered in the area in the 1960s as part of the regional exploration program by Kennecott that located Ok Tedi. The mineralisation is associated with poly-phase porphyritic diorites, quartz diorites and tonalites that intrude the Upper Eocene to Middle Miocene Darai limestone and underlying Cretaceous to Eocene Feing Group. Radiometric K-Ar and U-Pb zircon ages cluster between 4 and 2 Ma for both the mineralised and post-mineral intrusions. In addition to porphyry-type mineralisation, variable amounts of calc-silicate and/or magnetite skarn occur near the contact of most of the intrusions. Mineralisation in the Olgal and Futik porphyries occurs as chalcopyrite replacement of mafic minerals and in a stockwork of micro-veinlets. Mineralisation mostly occurs in the intrusions but is also observed in hornfelsed siltstones and sandstones of the Feing Group on the southern margin of the Olgal intrusive body. Quartz veining is uncommon. Secondary magnetite is commonly associated with the highest copper and gold grades. Sericitic alteration is most prominent in the mineralised hornfels. Structurally, the area is dominated by syn- to post-mineralisation thrusting from the north. At least one of the deposits (Olgal) appears to be truncated at depth by a thrust fault.CITATION:Queen, L D, 2015. A model of ore value distributions is presented that is the culmination of a statistical approach rather than simply a model that has been successfully applied to the evaluation of ore reserves. Detailed geological and physical observations based on large sampling data sets have been used to support the statistical modelling. Fundamental to the modelling process is the concept that the occurrence of a given grade value in space is a function not only of the presence of the mineral but also of the fact that it is associated with a specific trapping mechanism. We have read, with great interest, Mr. Crocker's article on "Recent Trends in Autogenous Grinding," published in the October issue of The Canadian Mining and Metallurgical Bulletin. Referring to our paper, "Two-Stage Autogenous Grinding Investigations at Outokumpu," we can now report that last August we changed to this method at the Keretti concentrator. Prior to the conversion, the Keretti plant (see flow-sheet, Figure 1) had two primary rod mills, 6 ft. in diameter and 12ft. in length, in open circuit, followed by four secondary 9-by 12-ft. pebble grate mills in closed circuit with rake classifiers. Last summer, wl1en the Since August, grinding has been successfully carried out autogenously in two stages, with two mills being employed in the primary stage and four in the secondary. The size of the pebbles in the secondary mills is about the same as earlier -l V: i to 3 inches (Figures 4 and 5). "An air dense medium fluidized bed separator is an efficient dry process for the removal of undesirable gangue material from run-of-mine coal. Its cleaning performance depends on a variety of operating parameters that are interrelated in unknown, complex ways. A literature review showed that these parameters' effects had been experimentally investigated using a traditional one-variable-at-a-time approach, which is highly inefficient and sometimes misleading because many of the parameters often interact with each other to alter the overall equipment performance. Also, it is realized that the interrelationship among these parameters can have a significant effect on equipment performance. Therefore, to correctly evaluate the effects of individual parameters as well as their interactional effects on the separation performance of an air dense medium fluidized bed, we conducted a scientific study based on response surface methodology. Empirical models for two key response variables, namely, product ash and combustible recovery, were developed and subsequently used for identifying an appropriate operating region to achieve optimum separation performance. Furthermore, the optimum performances predicted from the empirical models were validated against experimental data. Preliminary results show a strong interaction among the operating parameters investigated in this test program.IntroductionFluidization is widely applied in industry for its various useful features. In the coal industry, it is used in the air dense medium fluidized bed (ADMFB) separator for the beneficiation of run-of-mine coal. In this separator, a medium is created by suspending fine magnetite particles in an upward air flow, and this pseudo-fluid is used as the beneficiation medium, with the lighter coal particles floating to the medium’s surface while heavier particles sink to the bottom. This separation technique had been receiving a significant amount of attention worldwide in recent times for its specific advantages of low operating cost and less restriction for small capacities (Luo and Chen, 2001; Sahu et al., 2009; Dwari and Hanumantha Rao, 2007; Van Houwelingen and de Jong, 2004), but it is still not a well-established industrial practice because of the availability of efficient wet processing technology. However, with a revival of interest in the dry beneficiation of coal, in general, and ADMFB, in particular, there is once again a concerted effort to improve the efficiency of the ADMFB process, and successive improvements have been made to make this process a competitive and viable option. The existing literature reveals that most of these research efforts had been essentially focused on the identification of a single parameter that has a key influence on separation performance, without taking notice of parameter interactional effect. For example, Luo et al. (2004) proposed a pressure drop number to distinguish separation performance without considering the bed height and gas velocity, which are intimately related to this proposed pressure drop number."

EVERY man connected with the mining industry should take a significant pride in the fact that he belongs to an industry and to a profession that, from the beginning, has been constructive. The miner digs his ore and he gives the metal to art, to industry, and to commerce. The nature of our business is destructive only in that we deal with a wasting asset. That should be a source of great pride to those who belong to the profession. But unfortunately, the product of our mines, our smelters, and our re- fineries does not always go to constructive purposes. There are times when, in the administration of the affairs of men, our product chiefly goes to purposes which are destructive. When we look upon the panorama of horror that is being enacted throughout the world today, we wonder whether any effort toward the development of civilization and culture and education and well-being has been worthwhile. We are appalled to see the things that have been developed, through the application of science, toward progress and efficiency, now used for the catastrophic destruction of those things which are the most valuable that man has built. We must find hope that this is but an episodic thing; that it must, in the infinite wisdom of the Almighty, usher in a period of peace and progress, of civilization and development that will make man's existence upon earth worthwhile.

"INTRODUCTION The orienting phases of the current investigation of cushioned blasting in the Explosives Division of the Bureau of Mines were indicated in a previous publication (5) 3/. Pertinent literature reviewed therein indicated a highly controversial field. This emphasized the need for experimental studies of many factors that affect the health and safety of miners and the efficiency of mining operations. Results of some orienting tests showed marked effects on practical hazards. Further, they emphasized the necessity and importance of the contemplated investigation. The scope and general plan of these practical inquiries into the safety of cushioned blasting were indicated.This investigation of cushioned blasting relates to the various means employed to reduce the intensity of application of energy from explosive actions in boreholes. It has been suggested (from p. 19 of reference 5) that the divisions of this work would correspond to the salient hazards affected by cushioned blasting. These include the ignition hazard, hazards from poisonous gases, and other practical hazards in the blasting technique. The ignition hazard was resolved into two components of approximately equal weight. These include studies of effects upon (1) the incendivity of blown-out shots and upon (2) the occurrence of such shots. Experimental studies of effects on the incendivity of blown-out shots were first undertaken. Questions of the best procedure for making these evaluations have been adduced, and the interpretation and utilization of the results of gallery testing seemed to require detailed attention; some preliminary general considerations of such testing were therefore necessary."

A lightweight compressed oxygen rescue breathing apparatus (RBA) for rescue and recovery missions has been developed by Mine Safety Appliances Company under contract to the Bureau of Mines. The apparatus is a positive pressure, closed circuit system of 4 hours duration. The weight of the complete apparatus, including an optional cooler, is slightly over 30 pounds. Weight reduction over currently available RBAs is achieved through the use of lithium hydroxide for scrubbing C02 in place of conventional chemicals and the use of a composite glass fiber/ aluminum shell cylinder for oxygen storage in place of steel cylinders. Positive pressure is maintained in the breathing circuit at all times by applying a constant spring force to the breathing bag. The harness has been designed to reduce the work of the wearer by redistributing the weight of the apparatus to the wearer's hips.
