The U.S. Bureau of Mines and the U.S. Geological Survey are responsible for the evaluation of the mineral resources and potential of further planning areas included in the U.S. Forest Service Roadless Area Review and Evaluation (RARE II) program. The Bureau of Mines primarily evaluates mineral deposits and prospects within the areas. The Geological Survey naps the area's geology and conducts geochemical sampling. Evaluations are in conformance with the Forest and Rangeland Renewable Resources Planning Act of 1974 as amended by the National Forest Management Act of 1976. The Hauser RARE II area, which consists of 7,600 acres (3,100 ha) within the Cleveland National Forest, is in southern San Diego County, California. The area, which forms the north slope of Hauser Canyon, ranges between 1,600 and 3,919 ft (490 m) in elevation. It is sparsely to densely covered with desert shrubs. The area is underlain by granitic rocks of the Peninsular Ranges batholith.

About 15 years ago the debate on the reliability of sampling procedures for agricultural food and feed commodities was initiated by a few brave scientists who questioned the representativeness of what, at the time, were routine sampling procedures established exclusively on the basis of tradition and practical feasibility. Over time several national and international organisations contributed to the discussion, developing standards and publishing papers either to underline the fact that sampling is always a source of error, in itself, which cannot be overlooked, or to minimise the relevance of sampling on the basis of argumentations linked to time and money limitations. The latter dominated, but is nevertheless impossible to accept from both a scientific and a responsible management perspective. Here the author presents an historical overview of these past 15 years, illustrating the most controversial issues, reporting major achievements in food/feed sampling, highlighting milestones, as well as unresolved problems that still need the attention and contribution from the sampling community. The need to incorporate Theory of Sampling (TOS) into food/feed safety assessment (pre-market), as well as into food/feed safety monitoring (post-market) has recently been highlighted, and the practical applicability of TOS to base food/feed safety decisions on representative sampling, has been explored and documented via concrete examples of risk analysis in different areas of food/feed industrial production chains. Now it is time to move forward and ensure that TOS is fully integrated into the well-established Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) / World Health Organization (WHO) risk assessment approach, in order to guarantee a transparent and correct universal frame for risk assessment and the subsequent management decision-making process. WCSB8 offers the ideal platform to explore the best way to do so, switching from a theoretical discussion of correct sampling principles for food and feed agricultural commodities to practical recommendations in the interest of consumers, worldwide. These 15 years have also been a personal journey of interesting dimensions, indeed a veritable roller-coaster ride in-and-out of the scientific, technological, industrial and (last but not least) regulatory worlds. The start was WCSB2 in 2004, when I flew to Australia to discover if in other areas sampling had been identified as an unavoidable issue and, if so, what the solution was. There, I found a good travel companion who today is still on my side, to assemble the puzzle and explore how to shape the future, to concretely answer to the 15 years’ quest for proper sampling in the assessment and monitoring of food/feed safety.CITATION:Paoletti, C, 2017. This report presents the results of a search for viable-self-drilling roof bolt concepts, detailed development, design, and manufacture of such bolts that drill their own holes, and testing in the laboratory and in the field in two different coal mines of three self-drilling roof bolts. Three new types of bolts were designed and tested, which drill their own holes and then anchor in continuous operation. These were a spring-actuated mechanical expansion shell, a slot and wedge, and a self-contained resin anchor bolt. Such bolts when fully developed for mine use would allow safer and remote installation of ground support and increase productivity. Recommendations are given for further work to improve drilling and anchorage performance.

"This paper presents a case history in the design and construction of high-capacity drilled shafts for the iconic New York Wheel presently being constructed along the St. George area waterfront in northern Staten Island, New York. Although the site is located in an area that offers views of the Statue of Liberty, the Manhattan skyline, and New York Harbor, the variable and challenging subsurface conditions at the site and the structural loading requirements for Wheel erection and service conditions presented geotechnical design and construction challenges. The paper focuses on site and subsurface conditions, drilled shaft design and construction details, results of Osterberg-cell and lateral load testing, and load test data analysis and evaluation.PROJECT DESCRIPTIONThe proposed 630-foot (190 m) -tall New York Wheel (the Wheel) is projected to be one of the tallest observation wheels in the world. Upon completion, the Wheel will be capable of carrying over 1,400 passengers in its 36 capsules. The Wheel site is located along New York Harbor offering views of the Statue of Liberty, the Manhattan skyline, and the New York Harbor; see Fig. 1. The Wheel structure is sited along the waterfront, and served by a 3-story terminal located south of the Wheel in the eastern portion of the site and having a footprint area of about 34,250 sq-ft (3,180 sq-m). A 4-story parking Garage, with a footprint of about 112,840 sq-ft (10,480 sqm), is to be constructed south of the Wheel in the central and western portions of the site.SITE AND SUBSURFACE CONDITIONSThe site’s close proximity to the New York Harbor presented geotechnical challenges because the site is located in an area that was once beyond the historic shoreline of Staten Island. The site is an about 350,000-sq-ft (32,500-sq-m) parcel generally bounded by the Richmond County Bank Ballpark to the southeast, the 9-11 Memorial to the east, Bank Street to the north and northeast, and Richmond Terrace and an associated retaining wall to the southwest and south. A 50-ft (15-m) -wide New York City Transit Easement, with an active on-grade service area and tracks, is located in the southern portion of the site. Structural properties of steel-fiber-reinforced shotcrete and polymer-impregnated shotcrete, both plain and fiber-reinforced, were investigated by the Federal Bureau of Mines, Spokane Mining Research Center. The research center has found that flexural strengths can be increased by as much as 106 percent, and splitting-tensile strength by 50 percent, by introducing randomly oriented steel fibers. A slight decrease of compressive strength was found in the fiber-reinforced shotcrete. Polymer-impregnated shotcrete exhibited a threefold to fourfold increase in compressive and splitting-tensile strength. The techniques of preparing shotcrete with the dry process, using both fast-set agents and regulated-set cement, are described, along with the results of physical-property testing. Physical properties include compressive and splitting-tensile strengths, tangent and secant moduli, and stress-strain curves for plain shotcrete, fiber-reinforced shotcrete, and polymer-impregnated plain and fiber-reinforced shotcrete. Flexural strengths for plain and fiber-reinforced shotcrete are also reported. Steel-fiber shotcrete is the more promising of the new structural materials for ground support, and additional research is recommended.

Unverified reports of rare earth element (REE) concentrations in gold placers and radioactive mineral prospects in the Zane Hills were investigated by the U.S. Bureau of Mines as part of the Alaska critical minerals program. REE is reported to occur in dredge concentrates at the Hogatza mine and up to 1.2 pct REE was previously analyzed in alkalic syenite (bostonite) dikes marginal to the pluton. In addition, numerous thorium-rich veins, explored for their uranium content but unevaluated for REE, occur on the western margin of the Zane Hills. The Bureau mapped and sampled all of the reported or suspected REE occurrences. Dredge concentrates contain abundant uranothorianite, a mineral species which incorporates cerium subgroup REE. Bostonite dikes occur in conjunction with a multi-phased zoned alkalic intrusion, however, no significant REE concentrations were found. Thorium-rich veins contain nil to 0.5 pct Y but resource potential is limited by this relatively low grade, the ultimate low tonnage potential, and the lack of uranium as a major economic element. The Zane Hills exhibit attractive exploration targets for uranium deposits, primarily in a sedimentary form. Gold may be found peripheral to the pluton in both placer and lode deposits. Resource potential of REE, however, appears limited to a placer by-product of REE-Zr-Ti that is recoverable only during large scale gold placer mining. Placer exploration of the lower Wheeler and Dakli Creeks is suggested.

The project involved design, construction, and testing of hydraulic models of culverts, decant and open channel spillways which are typical drainage structures used for protecting mine waste embankments. MSHA (The Mine Safety and Health Administration, U. S. Department of Labor) made a motion picture of the tests. Tests results and products in the forms of graphs, tables and films, demonstrate the principles and factors which govern the function and performance of the three types of drainage structures.

"Simple systematic accounting that adequately records all transactions has long been regarded as essential to the welfare of any business enterprise. Some of the defects that detract from the prosperity of the slate industry are attributable to a lack of effectiveness in cost keeping. This condition has prompted the United States Bureau of Mines to make a detailed study of accounting methods for the slate industry, and to present for consideration a system of accounts, which it is believed would enable the industry to attain more economical management and operation if accepted by a fair proportion of its important units.The method of accounting presented herein has been worked out with the assistance of leading slate producers and the recommendation are tentative and are submitted in this form as a means of developing constructive criticism. Believing that cooperative effort in this, as in many other problems, will bring the most enduring benefits to the industry as a whole, the writer urges that the most earnest consideration be given to this vital problem now facing the slate industry.Grateful acknowledgment is made of the helpful assistance rendered by R. E. Eckert of the accounting firm of Eckert, Degan, and Palmer of Easton, Pa., in compiling the charts and the explanatory text. The Bureau of Mines conducted laboratory studies to investigate methods for desilicating sodium aluminate solution derived from leaching a limestone-anorthosite sinter with 10-pct Na2C03 solution. Desilication tests were made at atmospheric pressure to determine the effects of time and additions of lime and desilication residues. A two-stage, countercurrent desilication procedure was developed to reduce the Si02 content sufficiently to meet specifications for cell-grade A1203. Both stages were conducted at boiling temperatures at atmospheric pressure. Reagent lime was charged as desilication seed to the partially desilicated solution in the second stage, and a product (desilication residue) precipitated by the lime addition was charged to the freshly leached solution in the first stage. Average A1203 loss in the desilication circuit was 5.8 pct, and the product solution contained less than 0.04 g/l Si02. Complete precipitation of A1203 by carbonation resulted in a hydrate containing less than 0.01 pct Si02. Calcination of this hydrate would produce A1203 meeting the 0.015 pct Si02 specification for cell-grade material.

The alliance is in the form of a Rock to Specification (R2S™) service, one of Orica’s Blast Based Services (BBS™). The ultimate goal was to facilitate the rapid expansion of material movement from 26 to 41M m3 (34 to 53M yd3) per annum while maintaining a reliable ore supply to the mill.

IN 1945, Illinois produced 75,210,000 bid. of oil, or 4.4 percent of the total for the United States, and ranked sixth in the nation in oil production for the third consecutive year. Production decreased about 3 per cent from that of 1944, when the total Illinois production was 77,413,000 bbl. This is the smallest percentage of decrease in production in the state for any year since a peak was reached in 1940. Daily average production for 1945 was approximately 206,000 bbl. This Bureau of Mines report describes the preparation characteristics of the significant coalbeds of Clay, Gilmer, and Lewis Counties, W. Va. In 1966, almost 1.3 million tons of coal was mined in these counties, of which more than one-half was from the Pittsburgh coalbed. Washability analyses were made of 16 coalbed samples. Of these, only 11 samples could be upgraded to metallurgical quality. For steam or power generation five of the coals were of low sulfur content as received. The remaining samples were generally of medium sulfur content even after upgrading.

Mining companies have sharpened their refocus on their tailings management strategies in recent years. Mining companies with tailings storage facilities that use the upstream construction method have been challenged to track the evolution of industry standards, assess risks, revise design, and communicate design revisions with regulators. While many aspects of best practices and industry standards have evolved in recent years as an attribute of continual improvement, the controlling standard in the design of many upstream dams is understanding the foundational strengths of hydraulically deposited tailings. Following best practices and industry standards, Hibbing Taconite Company managed by Cleveland-Cliffs, began the re-evaluation of foundation strengths underlying a system of upstream dams at the company’s iron ore mine tailings storage facility in northern Minnesota. Initial steps in the re-evaluation require reanalysis of design parameters and recommendations by the Engineer of Record to the Owner, which was followed by a series of meetings with the Technical Review Board to determine an initial path forward. Once a path forward and preliminary design parameters were determined, the Owner engaged with the State Dam Safety Engineer to discuss and seek approval of the plan. With continuous regulatory engagement throughout the process, further refinement of the design parameters for the hydraulically-placed tailings foundations underlying upstream dams began with field and lab geotechnical investigations. Following a review of risk assessments and trigger actions response plans, Hibbing Taconite revised its tailings storage facility operating plans and budget for the coming years. Based on the findings of the re-evaluation, reanalysis, and refinement of parameters, a paradigm shift was realized with the hydraulically placed tailings foundation strengths underlying the upstream system of dams. This paper explores the path that the Hibbing Taconite Company followed to understand the paradigm shift and construct downstream improvements. The plan involved tailings re-characterization, dam design revisions, operating plan reconciliation, budget revisions, wetland permitting, dam safety permit amendments, storm water prevention plans, borrow materials studies, new concrete decant structures and the pursuit to recognize and be consistent with industry standards.

Resumen ¦ Un sistema de comunicaciones “a través del suelo” (TTE) comercial y disponible fue evaluado en una mina de carbón subterránea en la zona Este del Estado de Kentucky. Este estudio de campo fue realizado como parte de una evaluación multisitio mayor de sistemas TTE disponibles. La mina detallada en este estudio se encontraba paralizada al momento de la evaluación, lo que proporcionó la representación más cercana a la realidad del medio ambiente en una mina luego de una operación de cierre. Para este estudio se probaron las comunicaciones superficie a subterráneo y subterráneo a superficie. El despliegue estándar del sistema TTE usando los procedimientos recomendados por el fabricante logró obtener comunicaciones claras y nítidas entre el socavón y la superficie. Otras disposiciones de las unidades arrojaron resultados mixtos. Existen planes para examinar más los fenómenos observados en esta mina.

El objetivo del presente trabajo es describir el sistema de relleno hidraúlico en los tajeos de vetas angostas de la mina de Morococha a través del método "Arch Back". Actualmente el sistema de relleno convencional es lento, costoso y ofrece desventajas respecto del *R/H. Los objetivos del R/H son aumentar la eficacia de minado, controlar las leyes del mineral, minar los tajeos de baja ley, mejorar el sostenimiento de las cajas y la baja de costo. En este sentido, se describen las operaciones unitarias de los tajeos con R/H y se comparan con los métodos convencionales, encontrando eficiencias en los tajeos aplicados con el método Arch Back y los tajeos de vetas angostas, así como se mejora la producción y los costos de la misma.

"INTRODUCTION One of the various phases of the work by the U.S. Bureau of Mines, in its endeavors to minimize the hazards that attend coal mining, is the investigation of electrical motor-driven machinery. The object of this investigation is to foster the development of explosion-proof machines for use in gassy mines. This investigation is conducted under the provisions of Schedule 2C, which prescribes the inspection and tests made upon motors, controllers, and other electrical parts to determine their ability to withstand internal explosion without discharge of any flames. The method of conducting these inspections and tests is described in Bureau of Mines Bulletin 305, Inspection and Testing of Mine-Type Electrical Equipment for Permissibility, published in 1929. Formal approval of a machine for use in gassy mines is not granted by the Bureau of Mines until the machine is found to comply with the requirements, including inspection and test. When it is approved it is entitled to classification as a ""permissible"" machine.The high regard in which machines approved by the U.S. Bureau of Mines are held by engineers of other countries is attested by the growing number of shipments of permissible equipment; to other nations, including Australia, Russia, Norway, Japan, and Manchuria."

"IntroductionFlue dust which results from the smelting of ores containing appreciable quantities of fines is one of the troublesome products of iron blast-furnace practice. Gases issuing from the furnaces at a high velocity carry small particles of coke, ore and flux into dust-collecting chambers. These particles constitute the flue dust. Lasses of iron ore through the production of flue dust vary between wide limits in the different furnaces, and depend on a number of factors, such as size and design of furnace, amount of fines in the ore, the operating conditions and the blast pressure.Blast-furnace operators of the Birmingham district keenly realize this waste. The ores are comparatively low grade and require more fuel than is ordinarily used elsewhere. Hence the flue dust is low in iron content and high in coke. As a result it is not in suitable condition for direct sintering. In many other iron and steel centers direct sintering is a common practice. In the Birmingham district efforts have been made to prevent this loss by recharging the dust into the furnace, but, as might be expected, a material fine enough to be blown out once will very likely be carried over again.In general, the flue-dust losses in this district will average 250 pounds per ton of pig iron produced, but at times the losses at different furnaces are substantially higher or lower than this figure. On the basis of the present rate of pig-iron production, the annual loss of flue dust exceeds 300,000 tons. The iron content of the dust probably averages 25 per cent, therefore about 75,000 tons of iron is wasted yearly, or about 3 per cent of the iron mined is lost in flue dust."
