"INTRODOCTIONIn an earlier communication 1 from our laboratory it was reported that mechanical crushing of coal and quartz under normal air atmosphere generates of free radicals on the particle surfaces, and that these radicals decay with time, hence pointing to a higher toxicity of fresh dusts in relationship to pneumoconiosis and silicosis. More recently Fubini et al.2 have also reported the detection by electron spin resonance (ESR) of the formation of SiO. and Si-type of radicals from quartz particles crushed under atmospheric conditions. In agreement with earlier ESR studies on single crystals of quartz crushed under high vacuum ( -10-10 torr>3 and subsequent exposure to air,3 and to other gases,4 these radicals were identified2 as being formed by the homolytic cleavage of the Si-0-Si bonds and the reactions of the Si• and SiO- radical with atmosphere. Fubini et al.2 also suggested that these radicals might be involved in the mechanism of the fibrotic action by silica, either by transforming the particle surface into a selective oxidating agent or as an initiator of a sequence of reactions leading to fibrosis. Earlier Gabor and Anca5 bad reported that lipid ·peroxidation caused by free radicals on the silica surface might be involved in the red blood cell membrane damage. Thus far, however, no parallel cytotoxicity, fibrogenicity, and free radica1 studies on a given quartz dust sample have been reported, except for some earlier work from our laboratory.1·6·7 We now present more recent results obtained from parallel cytotoxicity, fibrogenicity, and free radica1 measurements on a freshly made quartz dust. The dust's free radica1 content was measured using ESR spectroscopy while its cytotoxicity potential was estimated via hemolysis. Hemolysis was employed as the toxicity test because it is a widely used method for estimating the potential of a dust for disrupting the cell membrane. 8 The fibrotic potential was followed by measuring the dust-induced lipid peroxidation, using linoleic acid as a model lipid. As discussed below, the results obtained suggest new clues to the mechanism of the quartzrelated cytotoxicity and fibrogenicity. MATERIALS AND METHODSReagentsCrystalline quartz particles with a size range of 0.2-2.5 mm were obtained from the Generic Respirable Dust Technology Center, Pennsylvania State University, University Park, Pennsylvania. These particles were crushed in air to obtain quartz dust samples with particle sizes smaller than 20 microns. We chose to work with a dust with mixed particle sizes, rather than a specific range, as an effort to simulate the mining atmosphere. An agate mortar-pestle arrangement was used for the crushing and grinding because of the close similarity of the structure of agate to that of quartz. Diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DETAPAC) were purchased from Sigma. All other chemica1s were purchased from Fisher or Aldrich.Hemolysls ExperimentsHemolytic activity of silica was measured, following an established procedure,9 as the amount of hemoglobin released from a 2 % suspension of sheep erythrocytes after incubation with 10 mg of silica dust for one hour at 37 °C. The hemoglobin release was estimated via the absorbance at 540 nm using a Gioford spectrophotometer. The procedure was calibrated by substituting the silica dust by a phosphate buffer solution as a negative control (background) and O.S % Triton-X-100 as a positive control (100% hemolysis). "The automotive industry is under a constant pressure to reduce the weight of vehicles in order to reduce emissions and improve fuel efficiency. As such, there is an ever-growing demand for high strength and high ductility steel grades to meet the need for lightweight automotive components. Over the past decade, the production and application of 2nd and 3rd generation Advanced High Strength Steels (AHSS) as a lightweight material in automobiles has gained significant popularity due to their exceptional mechanical properties. However, the production cost of these high manganese steel remains high, partially due to the need of large amounts of ferromanganese as alloying material in standard steelmaking processes.The current study introduces a new and cost-effective technology for the production of medium- and high-manganese steels, where self-fluxed micro-pellets of manganese ore will be used as the source of manganese that can be injected into the steel bath. Prior to injection, these pellets are subjected to a pre-reduction process using a mixture of H2 and CO gases, where partial metallization of iron and manganese will occur. Direct injection of the pre-reduced micro-pellets provides less volatilization/emission and higher recovery of manganese, and is capable of producing AHSS with 6–18 wt% Mn.INTRODUCTIONAutomakers are constantly searching for lighter, stronger and cheaper materials in an effort to create safer and more fuel efficient vehicles. The introduction of aluminum alloys and polymer composite materials for automotive applications has been carving into what is traditionally one of the most profitable markets of the iron and steel business. The steel industry responded with Advanced High Strength Steel (AHSS)—a family of manganese containing steels which exhibit exceptional strength and ductility."

Minerals are certainly where they are found. The undemocratic distribution of the world's mineral wealth has created an incongruous inbalance: mineral-rich, scarcely populated countries supply highly-populated industrialised countries that in turn consume more minerals than they produce. This has been as much a generating force for colonisation, invasion, and war as religion, political ideals, or megalomania. The Industrial Revolution of the seventeenth century was born in Britain, a country with large domestic resources of coal, iron, lead, zinc, copper, tin, etc., as well as a large population. As consumption outstripped production imports filled the gap, particularly from its worldwide colonies. For example, when Canada was founded in 1867 more than 905 of its investments were British financed, and much of these were mineral-based. The British made similar investments in South East Asia, Australasia, the Caribbean, and elsewhere, as did the other industrialised Western European countries hungry for raw materials. Later the United States emerged as a leading industrial power, again due largely to its abundant natural resources. Consumption soon exceeded production and foreign sources were saught. American business went exploring abroad ant many a mineral resource was developed almost totally on the basis of the US market many .thousands of miles away. Closer to home, Canada was also an obvious target for the US with its rich mineral resource base, small population, and geographical juxtaposition, so much so that about the time of the 1914-18 War the US took over from Britain as the major investor in Canada, and this peaked in 1967 when the US accounted for 80% of the country's foreign investment. After the 1939-45 War Japan joined the ranks of the USA and Western Europe as industrialised powers, and they too searched the world for the deposits lacking in their homeland.

"INTRODUCTION The Margerum bauxite district, in Colbert County, Ala. was investigated in December 1940 and in February 1943 by R. W. Smith of the Bureau of Mines .3/ A geologist of the Federal Geological Survey investigated and mapped the district in the fall of 1942.These preliminary investigations indicated bauxite showings over an area about a mile long by 2,000 feet wide. It was felt that the chances were good for finding one or more large deposits of low- to medium-grade bauxite. The location - within 35 miles of the alumina plant of the Reynolds Metals Co. atLister Hill, Ala. – made it especially attractive. A field office was established in Iuka, Miss., on May 19, 190,, and mineral agreements were executed with four landowners covering 1,146.6 cores.The drilling on the project was done under contract. The power drilling was supplemented by a labor crew that drilled hand-auger holes, where there was little or no gravel overburden, and sampled the old test pits.The Federal Geological Survey, after thorough study of the district, recommended 54 drill holes 4/ to delimit the known deposits and to search for possible extensions. After the drilling started, many of these locations eliminated, and others were changed upon the basis of information gathered from the holes as they were drilled."

An inventory was made by the Bureau of Mines of wastes of mineral origin, water requirements, treatment of wastes, and water treatment practice of 163 industrial installations in the Lower Missouri River Basin. This is the second and concluding report on the survey, conducted in cooperation with the Missouri Basin Field Committee of the Department of the Interior as part of the Missouri Basin project. Principal industries covered by this second report are: Sand and gravel, coal, meat, ice, brewing, paint, petroleum, chemical, fabricated metals, and a number of industries having either no waterborne wastes, or none of mineral origin. Gravel, sand, and silt from 47 producers are the major wastes, totaling 6 million tons annually, Coal mine wastes in the form of slurried solids from washing crude coal are second in volume, totaling 100,000 tons per year. They contain an average of about 40 percent coal. Salt is the third largest waste, amounting to 28,000 tons per year, Next is calcium carbonate, most of which is formed in water treatments, Because of its high unit value, chromic acid is important, although the waste quantity is much smaller; cyanide wastes are also significant because large quantities of sodium hydroxide and chlorine are consumed in their treatments prior to disposal. The various industries discharging wastes use 38 billion gallons of water annually; the recirculation rate is 109 billion gallons per year. The plants discharging no waterborne mineral wastes use 2 billion gallons of water per year and recirculate more than 1 billion gallons. Sand and gravel plants use 13.5 billion gallons; petroleum refineries use 10 billion gallons in direct use and recirculate 82 billion gallons per year.

Tracing of 'float' against the latest ice-flow directions ha!' led to or assisted in discoveries of several mineral deposits in Canada at lP.ast since 1891, e.g., fluorite and corundum in eastern ?Ontario, Steeprock and Josephine iron ore in western Ontario, Malartic, Fisher-Quebec, and Lamaque gold ore, and Vendome zinc ore, in western Quebec, Sullivan zinc and lead sulphides in British Columbia, Orvan Brook or New Calumet sulphide deposit in New Brunswick, Lynn Lake nickel sulphide de-posit in Manitoba, etc. Pebbles or ore boulders whose source has not yet been found include diamonds in the Great Lakes region and ?sulphides in several localities in Ontario and Quebec. Complexity of transport of ore boulders, including non-glacial transport, may be the explanation. Tracing of ore boulders requires knowledge of the Pleistocene history of each particular area (ice flow directions, their ?changes during glacial oscillations, existence of pre-glacial lakes with ice-rafted boulders, later interference by streams, lakes, mass movements). Important also is distinction of till from similar non-glacial deposits and knowledge of the bed-rock geology. Quantitative methods, e.g., pebble counts, maybe applied while tracing magnetite, hematite, or goethite. Fragments of sulphide ores are less abundant in indicator trains, and quantitative methods are less suit-able for tracing them. Heavy-miner-al investigations may give good results for minerals resistant to weathering. Geochemical methods are of value only in the vicinity of ore deposits.

LABORATORY research has been started at the Bureau of Mines Morgantown Petroleum Research Laboratory, Morgantown, Va., to investigate the possibilities thermal-recovery methods for producing crude oils of high API gravity found in oil reservoirs of the eastern United States. This bibliography on thermal methods of oil recovery was compiled as a part of the work. Crude oil discoveries to December 31, 1958, in the United States were estimated to exceed 270 billion barrels. Cumulative production of crude oil through 19.55 was about 60 billion barrels, and the American Petroleum Institute estimates that an additional 30.5 billion barrels are economically recoverable by present methods. On this basis, about two-thirds of the oil that has already been found can be classified as economically unrecoverable for lack of a satisfactory method. The rap icily rising costs of proving new deposit; of domestic petroleum, the lack of new discoveries of large oilfields in the united States, and I he growing demand for crude oil have caused an acceleration of research to develop new or improved methods fur producing "unrecoverable" oil in known reservoirs.

The Bureau of Mines investigated extraction of aluminum from aluminum-silicon alloys as a means of utilizing domestic aluminum silicate ores for aluminum production. Aluminum was extracted from aluminum-silicon alloys by electrolysis in molten electrolytes of NaCl-KCI-AIC13 and NaCl-KCI-AIF3 in a laboratory-scale cell. Six alloys with aluminum contents ranging from 20 to 87 percent aluminum were tested, and aluminum products of primary grade or better were obtained. More than 80 percent of the aluminum was recovered with current efficiencies as high as 91 percent. Recovery of a metallurgical-grade silicon product from the anode residue by an acid leaching procedure was possible with the 50-50 and 65-35 Al-Si alloys.

"Whenever a manometer has been used for recording explosion pressures it has been calibrated under a series of static pressures. Whether the readings taken during the rapidly changing pressures of an explosion (dynamic pressures) truly represent the actual pressures therefore is an open question. The authors had hoped to solve this problem by conducting the calibration with the aid of known pressures, applied at about the ammo rate as in an explosion, for example, by means of a cylinder and piston, the piston being driven in by an eccentric cam at a rate which would be determined accurately by the shape and rate of revolution of the cam. If the rate of compression were great enough, then the pressure in the cylinder (to which the manometer is attached) could be calculated from the laws of adiabatic changes of pressure and volume. It seems highly probably, however, from H. T. Tizard's observations on pressure changes in a cylinder during rapid compression (55) 4/ that there is much heat loss, therefore pressure loss, in the very small interval of time during compression; although Tizard was able to estimate the amount thereof, he did so only by relying on his nanometer, which is exactly the procedure that the authors challenge on the grounds that the manometer was not standardized under the conditions of its use. Hence the authors were driven from this scheme of calibration to another, namely, comparing records of ono and the same explosion taken simultaneously on several instruments of as varied a type as possible. If 2 of a number of instruments agree, perhaps both are accurate; if 3 agree, probably each of the 3 is accurate; if 4 agree, it is almost certain each of the 4 is accurate.There was a second objective in the present work. If the Bureau of Mines and the B.C.D. (British Coal Dust) manometers differ in their records, then from a sufficiently comprehensive series of experiments it may be possible to coordinate the extensive results already obtained at the American and British stations.Thirdly, it was hoped to learn which is the best available instrument for observing the pressures of coal-dust and as explosions and, if possible, to indicate means for improvement in manometry."

Failure of a mine material hoist can cause injuries, fatalities and significant infrastructure damage, along with an associated loss of production. Principal causes of hoist accidents are overwind and underwind. Past and present means of arresting hoisting equipment are marginally effective and utilize destructive systems that are not reusable following an arrest. The use of permanent magnet eddy current arrestor technology is proposed; the history and fundamental science of the technology are presented, followed by real world examples and calculations of performance for failsafe, friction-free, instantly reusable eddy current arrestors as applied to stopping a 30-ton ore skip traveling at 16 metres per second. A comparison of existing arrestor types with the eddy current arrestor is included and limitations of the ECA are also discussed.

MSA Research Corporation, Division of Mine Safety Appliances Company, was awarded a contract to conduct a survey of past and present methods used to control respirable dust in noncoal mines and ore processing mills. The survey covered information reported in mining journals, and U.S. Bureau of Mines Circulars, dust inspection reports, on-site evaluation of dust control methods and systems, and contact with manufacturers of dust control equipment. Both surface and underground mining operations were visited. Fifty mines and 51 processing plants were included in the survey. Although other energy commodities have developed successful futures contracts, long-term contracts still dominate the coal market. To establish whether coal markets will develop in the same way, coal price and volume data are tested against a set of criteria considered to represent some of the factors contributing to the development of a successful futures contract. Coal meets only some of the criteria: market players are subject to little risk in quite a stable market, have strong preferences for the specific nature of long-term contracts and profit from product uniqueness, each trade being individually negotiated. Potential structural changes in the western European market are not felt to be sufficient to create demand for a coal futures contract, but an empirical model has been developed that could form the basis of a further study to predict the potential for success

"BAUER Foundation Corp. was one of three contractors awarded with the installation of a cut-off wall at the Herbert Hoover Dike Rehabilitation project. The cut-off wall was constructed up to 84 feet deep and 25 inches thick. It extended from the crest through the middle of the existing dike into the underlying peat, sand, and rock layers. BAUER used the cement deep soil mixing method of Cutter Soil Mixing (CSM) to install the wall. Soil mixing was facilitated by first removing the peat layer in the wall alignment using Kelly drilling and replacing it with suitable backfill, resulting in a secant pile wall arrangement of replacement columns. BAUER successfully finished four task orders with a total length of just over 10 miles. Up to six rigs of the types BAUER BG 28, BAUER BG 40 and RTG RG 25 were concurrently used to perform the replacement columns and the cut-off wall installation.The paper introduces the project, the geotechnical site conditions, and the requirements specified by USACE. It focuses on the specific adaptation of the CSM method to the site conditions and on the equipment used. Strength and permeability results obtained from an extensive testing program are presented. The impact of the curing conditions on lab and in-situ test results is studied, and test results are related to soil conditions.PROJECTThe Herbert Hoover Dike is a 143-mile-long dike encircling Lake Okeechobee in south central Florida. When it was constructed in the 1930s and 1960s, the purpose of Herbert Hoover Dike was flood protection from hurricanes. However, during the 1970s a higher lake level was maintained permanently to provide local agriculture with water. Later, damage became apparent during two nearly back-to-back high water events in the 1990s, when numerous sink holes, seeps, pipes, and boils were observed (Fig. 1). In 2000, the Congress approved USACE to propose rehabilitation measures. The installation of a cut-off wall into the existing dike was chosen during the initial design process as the preferred measure to improve the safety of the dike (Davis et al. 2009).The first section of the dike to be rehabilitated was Reach 1 located along the southeast side of the lake between the towns of Port Mayaca and Belle Glade. An indefinite delivery indefinite quantity (IDIQ) multiple award task order contract (MATOC) was issued for this 22.4-mile-long stretch by USACE in 2007. BAUER Foundation Corp. (BAUER) was one of the three contractors that succeeded in the qualification process. Each of the three successful contractors had their own novel construction techniques. In the years 2008 to 2012 BAUER executed four task orders totaling over 10.0 lineal miles of cut-off wall with 3.3 million square feet of design surface area."

En este sentido, el presente texto refiere la relación de los yacimientos de óxidos de hierro con la formación Ferrobamba y el Batolito de la Deflexión Abancay para dar cuenta de la extensión de la provincia metalogénetica. Asimismo se considera la forma de los grupos de cuerpos mineralizados, el nivel de erosión, composición química y mineralógica del hierro, los yacimientos de otras sustancias en la faja ferrífera, la estimación de las reservas, la factibilidad de la explotación de los depósitos de hierro, morfología y transporte y su viabilidad con otros proyectos mineros.

Through metallurgical calculation and process analysis based on metallurgical theory, it is aimed to raise the concentration of smelting oxygen and improve the update speed of reaction interface, accelerate the reaction and achieve a high-intensity smelting at the stage of converting. The PM plant has launched a theoretical research on model of high-intensity converting aiming at increasing the oxygen concentration of converting, carried out transformation of Kaldo furnace converting system, performed a series of industrial trial operations, conducted multiple rounds of tracking test and data comparison in reducing the furnace cycle, lowering the unit consumption of fuel and stabilizing the furnace lining life. The move has practically tested and verified the correctness of high-intensity smelting theory.

This report summarizes an investigation to determine the occurrence and recoverability of heavy minerals in sand and gravel operations in the Southeastern United States. A total of 61 samples from 34 sand and gravel operations in Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina were studied. Heavy minerals, in amounts ranging from 3 to 400 pounds per ton, were found in all of the samples. Eighty percent of the samples contained 20 to 40 pounds per ton of heavy min¬eral. Valuable heavy minerals, in order of decreasing amounts, were ilmenite, kyanite, zircon, rutile, and monazite. Large-scale concentration tests were made on five samples from four major producers. Gravity concentration by Humphreys spirals and tables resulted in bulk heavy mineral concentrates that graded from 82 to 98 percent total heavy minerals. Mineral recoveries ranged, in percent, as follows: Ilmenite 60 to 95; zircon 96 to 100; kyanite 37 to 77; rutile 89 to 100; and monazite 96 to 100. Separation studies on the gravity concentrates showed they would respond to high-tension and high-intensity magnetic separation techniques to produce individual mineral concentrates. The recovery of each individual mineral from fractionation of the heavy mineral gravity concentrates, in percent, was: Ilmenite 77 to 94; rutile 41 to 68; kyanite 62 to 79; zircon 49 to 83; and rare-earth products, monazite and xenotime, 42 to 96. The grade of each mineral concentrate was: Ilmenite 51.1 to 68.7 percent Ti02; rutile 93.7 to 94.3 percent Ti02; kyanite 55 percent A1203; zircon 58 to 61 percent Zr02; and rare-earth products containing 73.8 to 90.8 percent monazite and 4.8 to 12.7 percent xenotime.

The importance of producing more oil from known petroleum reserves has placed increased emphasis on the application of secondary-recovery methods. Recently published reports3 4/ describe the results of waterflooding in Roane and Pleasants Counties, W. Va. (see fig. 1.) This report describes the Barron Kidd Oil Co.?s Santee waterflood project, Maxton sand, Burton field, Church district, Wetzel County, W. Va. (See fig. 2.) The Federal Bureau of Mines hopes that these reports will stimulate interest in improved waterflooding techniques, thereby discouraging premature abandonment of oil leases.

"INTRODUCTION The use of beryllium and its alloys has increased rapidly during the last decade. Further expansion of its use is limited; in part, by lack of adequately developed ore reserves. The principal commercial beryllium mineral is beryl, which is found chiefly in pegmatites and produced for market as a byproduct of the mica and feldspar industries. The coarse beryl is mined selectively, sobbed and sorted by hand, and then sold without further beneficiation. The known reserves of coarse beryl are small. No method has been available for concentrating small disseminated beryl crystals, so ores of this type have not been mined or have been left on waste dumps. Disseminated ore in low-grade unmined areas and waste dumps on developed properties is a potential source of beryl, provided a method is developed for its beneficiation.Published literature on the concentration of beryl is lacking in detail or deals chiefly with tests on artificial mixtures of pure minerals, and procedures as given were not applicable to the beryl ores tested at the Salt Lake Station. The testing procedures described in this report are independent developments. By employing these procedures, beryl was satisfactorily con¬centrated from several run-of-mine and dump ores, although these ores wore low in grade and part of the contained beryl was finely crystalline and disseminated.Beryl, quartz, and feldspar, when ground to flotation sizes, are so alike in color and general appearance that they cannot he distinguished by visual observation. The progress of the work depended on rapid determination of the grade of test products by means of the petrographic microscope. Small samples of concentrates and tailings were often cut after each addition of reagents, dried, and examined under the microscope."
