The following report summarizes the results of engineering feasibility studies whose purpose was to assess the probable efficiency, reliability, safety and cost of a number of possible methods for removal of radon gas from the ambient air in underground mines. Fourteen candidate techniques were evaluated. Seven of these were based on specific individual principles, and seven were based on combinations of these principles. "Generally speaking, the most intensive efforts at dust control in the mining industry have, in the past, been concerned with underground operations and where uranium ore or high silica material is processed. In the past several years, Stoop Rock has made Intensive efforts to reduce dust levels in it's Iron ore pelletizing complex. There have been no great engineering break-throughs with regard to dust control in such plants, and certainly no new engineering techniques have had to be applied at Steep Rock. This paper deals with how significant improvements in dust levels have been achieved through minor modification to dust collectors and ventilation units, improvements in operating practices, and education of supervisors and hourly personnel.PROCESS DESCRIPTIONSteep Rock Iron Mines is located 120 miles west of Thunder Bay near Atikokan. (fig. 1) Run-of-mine ore is pelletized along with some -1"" concentrate that has been processed in the concentrator (a summer operation only), which utilizes gravity separation to upgrade a mechanical mixture of ore and waste."

The integrated grouting method, as developed in the USSR, can be applied to multi-purpose operations that in¬clude the construction of shafts, drifts, and tunnels. In the USSR it has been used extensively for primary and final grouting of underground excavations in mining engineering and civil engineering projects. It has been applied in projects where the primary objective was waste contain¬ment. It has also been used to control subsidence beneath buildings located over mined out openings and to eliminate the flow of ground water beneath and around dams. This chapter considers several industrial applications in the form of case histories. The word integrated means that grouting activities were integrated with other activities. 9.1 CASE HISTORIES OF GROUTING FRACTURED ROCK WHEN SINKING VERTICAL SHAFTS The integrated grouting method has been applied most widely in the sinking of vertical shafts in fractured, satu¬rated rock. As explained previously herein, grouting oper¬ations preferably are carried out from the ground surface where they are integrated into the schedule of the setting up of the shaft excavation and construction equipment. Such integration reduces significantly the length of time required for preparation of shaft construction and the time required to sink the shaft. The increased efficiency is achieved by the elimination of cementing operations from the working face upon the penetration of each aquifer. Concomitantly, labor and energy consumption during shaft sinking are minimized because the more complicated and labor-intensive work is carried out at the surface section. Table 9.1 presents the essential parameters for the pri¬mary grouting of saturated fractured rock carried out by the integrated method when sinking vertical shafts. 9.1.1 NAGOL'CHANSK MINE NO. 1-2, VENTILATION SHAFT NO. 1 The integrated method of grouting saturated fractured rock through holes drilled from the surface was employed for the first time during the sinking of vertical shaft No. 1 at the Nagol'chansk mine No. 1-2 in the Don Basin. The shaft had an inside diameter of 6 m. The grouting operations commenced by using cement grout with a density of 1.7 to 1.8 g/cm3. Clay-based grout with cement and other addi¬tives was used only for grouting the aquifers where cement grout proved to be ineffective. By the time of the grouting of ventilation shaft No. 1, hydrodynamic analytical methods were well in hand and a preliminary method for designing isolation curtains had been developed. A method for designing and drilling ori¬ented directional drillholes whose natural curvature re¬flected the characteristics of the fracturing had been devel¬oped. The majority of the necessary equipment had been developed. Clay-based grouts were considered ready for the first industrial application. The hydrogeologic environment at the Nagol'chansk mine No. 1-2 contained many prolific aquifers. According to monitored drillhole data, the total expected inflow into ventilation shaft No. 1 without grouting was 425 m3/hr. This large ground water inflow rate was supported by in¬formation obtained during the sinking of the main shaft and from the auxiliary shaft of the "Nagol'chansk" mine No. 1-2. The construction contractor at the site began sinking ventilation shaft No. 1 to a depth of 217 m by cement grouting from the working face of the shaft. As a result of the cement grouting operations, the inflow of water was reduced from 105.4 to 40 m3/hr over this 217 m interval. However the residual inflow rate caused the shaft to become functional at the depth of 217 m. At this point all grouting operations were transferred to SPETSTAMPONAZHGEOLOGIA (STG) in an effort to improve the operation. In order to carry out preliminary grouting from the sur¬face, seven drillholes were installed and designed for re¬ceiving grout. Drilling was implemented by the ZIF-1200A rig to the design depth of the shaft. The geometry of the principal fracture system that would be encountered by the shaft was estimated while breaking ground using informa¬tion from other shafts. The drillholes were arranged so that they cut through the aquifers uniformly around the shaft. Some preference was given to intercepting the aquifers that were located along the rock dip above the shaft bottom because it was established that the ground water in the aqui¬fers flowed downward along the dip into the cone of de¬pression of the shaft. Investigations in the drillholes using the DAU-3M flowmeter described in Chapter 3 showed that all of the nine aquifers were penetrated by the time a depth of 690 m had been reached. The flowmetric information showed that aquifer numbers [1 and 2], [4, 5, and 6], and [7 and 8] had practically identical hydrogeologic characteristics; so it was decided to connect them into combined stopes and inject the grout using five stopes instead of nine. Table 9.2 shows the results of the grout injection into the aquifers. The volume of grout pumped into the separate intervals through single holes varied from 204 to 15 m3. "I. IntroductionThe alveolar surface of the lung is covered by two populations of pneumocytes, type I and type II epithelium. The type I cell, which accounts for most of the alveolar surface area and provides a highly specialized barrier for gas exchange (Rannels et al., 1991), is poorly understood. Although approaches to type I cell purification have been discussed, they have not been applied widely because of the lack of phenotypic markers to monitor isolation procedures (Dobbs et al., 1988; Danto et al., 1992). In contrast, the type II cell has been studied extensively, largely because of the development of reliable procedures for its isolation and primary culture. Investigations based on the use of purified populations of cultured type II cells have provided convincing evidence to support a role for the pneumocytes both in the maintenance of normal lung function and in the response of the lung to injury (for review, see Rannels and Rannels, 1989).While type II cells can be isolated by a variety of approaches, the protocols used most commonly are modifications of the gradient method of Dobbs and Mason (1979) or of the panning method of Dobbs et al. (1986). Purification of the cells based on density gradient centrifugation is reliable and consistent, with yields of 30 to 40 X 106 type II cells per rat of 230 g body weight. Isolation procedures applied to a minimum of three to four rats provide the best results, as lower cell yields are common with the use of fewer animals. A field test was conducted to demonstrate and quantify the relationship between deep cutting and the creation of airborne respirable dust for longwall mining With a double-ended ranging drum shearer. The testing program was carried out on the 3 North longwall of North American Coal Company's Quarto No. y mine in Claringten, Ohio. Continuous recordings of the dust levels were made at both the midface and tail ate areas. Data were collected during 27 shifts during which time 81 complete mining, cycles took place. Both drum speed and the number of picks per line were varied systematically during the testing program to alter the depth of cut while the production rate was held constant by maintaining a constant haulage speed. The test results indicated that at the midface position, airborne respirable dust was strongly dependent upon the depth of cut as influenced by both the drum speed and number of picks. Drum speed had a much stronger effect than number of picks over the experimental range, since a halving of drum speed reduced dust levels by approximately 60 percent while removal of every other vane pick resulted in only a 2.1 percent reduction at constant production. At the tailgate position, however, neither effect was strongly apparent. A tendency for the slower drum speeds to he associated with reduced power consumption and higher haulage speeds (and therefore production rates) was also noted. It is recommended that longwall operators oper¬ate at the lowest available drum speed wherever possible.

Modern advances have led to sweep and multibeam bathymetric surveying techniques that yield three-dimensional images of the sea floor and have also produced high-powered personal computers with which to control the data and analyse the results. At Sydney, in Nova Scotia, the topography of the sea floor over the longwall workings was observed before and after mining with a precision echo-sounder in 1987-89, with sweep bathymetry in 1993 and with multibeam bathymetry in 1994-95. The results of the latter programme produced what was probably the first observation of a complete three-dimensional subsidence trough over a longwall panel 2 500 m x 168 m. The subsidence has been quantified to a sufficient degree of accuracy to allow simple trend analysis, which has shown that the pattern and shape of movements are similar to those found elsewhere but with significantly smaller maximum subsidence. There are two types of ore transportation systems in use at Newmont's Magma Copper Co. San Manuel mine in Arizona-rail-mounted, box-type rotary cars and the newer rail-mounted, bottom-dumping ASEA cars. Though the cost per car for the ASEA units greatly exceeds the cost per rotary car, the advantages of the ASEA units, including much faster dump times, have made the ASEA system a successful alternative at the San Manuel mine. The rotary system of ore transportation has been in use at San Manuel since production began in 1956. The system employs 7.9-m3 box-type cars to transport ore by rail to shaft pocket areas. A rotating dumping mechanism turns three cars at a time upside down to empty them, and returns them to an upright position. Trains of 15 cars each are dumped in about six minutes. Each 15-car train is pulled by an 18-t rated trolley locomotive. There are about 400 rotary cars in service at San Manuel and the system is used for the majority of ore haulage. This well-proven rotary method was instrumental in achieving the December 1977 world record of 272 Mt hoisted from an underground copper mine. Magma Copper Co. began using ASEA cars in late 1977. Designed by ASEA of Sweden, the cars are built for San Manuel by Kasper-Hall Manufacturing Co. in Tucson. The cars basic design feature is a hinged floor that opens at the side as the car is pulled through the dump. As it passes over the dump, a fifth wheel attached to the hinged floor (opposite the hinges) travels along a rail in the dump. This rail dips down into the pocket and then returns to track level. As the fifth wheel travels along the rail, the car floor opens, the car dumps, and the floor is then returned to track level. As the car is dumping, the body remains suspended over the pocket by wheel rollers attached to each side of the dump. Trains of 10 cars each are emptied in about 45-50 seconds. Each ASEA train is pulled by an 18-t rated trolley locomotive, adapted at San Manuel to allow it to pass through the ASEA dump. At minimal cost, "wings" are welded to each side of the locomotive. These wings suspend the locomotive over the pocket as the train passes through the dump. Advantages of the ASEA System Major design characteristics of the ASEA and rotary systems are shown in the accompanying table. The comparison points out some of the following advantages demonstrated by the ASEA system. • Faster dumping-An ASEA train dumps in 50 seconds, while a rotary train takes at least six minutes. There is no stopping or starting when dumping an ASEA train. The train enters the dump area, dumps, and leaves in one continuous motion-in contrast to rotary trains which must stop and start five times to dump. With the rotary system, three cars are spotted in the dump mechanism by remote control. When the cars are in place, the train operator activates the dump, the cars are turned over, and then returned to an upright position. This process is repeated until all 15 cars in the train are emptied.

On a project which is to develop a system to suppress coal dust explosions, a facility has been built and several devices tested. The facility is a 317-foot, 4.5-foot diameter shock tube and to date 53 tests have been carried out with methane-air and methane/coal dust-air as the explosive mixtures. Suppression of slowly propagating (up to 300 ft/sec) flame fronts has been successfully carried out on two tests using the dry chemical extinguishing agent Purple K. Delivery of the material directly into the flame front Seems to be required if effective suppression is to be accomplished.

The application of manganese in iron and steel metallurgy is very inter¬ esting historically. In general, ancient- irons and steels contained virtu¬ ally no manganese, probably because the available iron ores contained■only small amounts of the manganese oxides. Occasionally, samples of ancient irons were found to have appreciable amounts of manganese, but their presence is considered accidental and dependent upon the ore available to craftsmen of that time. Two specimens of iron (139;— made in 500 A.D. contained .negligible quantities of manganese. A sample of steel which constituted the base of .the Khan Baba pillar in India was probably processed in 12p B. C. by the1 cementa¬ tion of wrought iron. This material; contained 0.02 percent manganese and 0.70 percent carbon (20) . One Damascus-steel sword forged some time between 11'60 ' and l400 A. D. was found to contain 0.1^-i percent manganese and 0.j6l percent carbon. The manganese content of this bla.de was much higher than that of any other material of this type which has been analysed. In every other instance the manganese content was below 0.02 percent. A cast steel manufactured by the East India. Co. in India in the early nineteenth century, under the name of Wootz steel, contained rather appreciable amounts of manganese. This material was made by melting and refining fairly high-manganese pig iron prepared from high-manganese ore. Heath (106), who was working at the Co. plant between 1S20 and 1S40, was convinced that the manganese content of the steel was the determining fa,ctor in its high quality. He learned of certain difficulties English steel manufacturers were having in making even fair-grade steel, and analyses of the material indicated low manganese contents. This convinced him that.if the use of manganese could be introduced in England its steel would be greatly benefited. In consequence, he moved to England and soon was producing certain grades of ferromanganese for use with the crucible process. He recommended addition of this metallic material to the ingot mold just before pouring. It was soon found that inferior brands of steel containing only traces of manganese could be greatly improved by such additions. All metallurgists of that time became convinced

The U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted a field study of mines and prospects of the Black Canyon RARE II area (No. 5061), Inyo County, California, from June to October 1981. Geological) geochemical, and geophysical studies were conducted by the U.S. Geological Survey. The Black Canyon RARE II area is east of Owens Valley and 6 mi east of Bishop, California. The principal mineral commodities are gold, silver, lead, zinc, and tungsten. Properties with resources in and adjacent to the area are listed in table 1; the locations are shown on figure 1.

Laboratory-scale tests were undertaken to examine several electrolytes for possible use in separating nickel and cobalt from products being prepared at Nicaro, Cuba. The most extensive work was done with nickel sulfate-ammonium fluoride, ammonium fluoride, ammonium sulfate, and nickel sulfate-boric acid electrolytes. All four electrolytes exhibited some selectivity for dissolving nickel carbonate from Nicaro basic carbonate used for regeneration. The nickel sulfate-ammonium fluoride electrolyte exhibited less selectivity for dissolving nickel carbonate from Nicaro basic carbonate than it did from synthetic mixtures. Ammonium fluoride leaching experiments showed that a low concentration and high temperature gave a good nickel extraction with C. P. reagents; however, this was not confirmed in tests using Nicaro basic carbonate. Electrolytic tests employing ammonium fluoride leach liquors gave no further separation, since approximately 90 percent of the cobalt was deposited at the cathode with the nickel.

This paper describes the research and development programme to develop a prototype underground auger mining system aimed at developing and demonstrating an underground auger mining system able to provide economic access to thinner (<1.8 m) coal reserves of South Africa. Data concerning the performance of modern coal augers under South African coal mining conditions were gained from a proven surface auger which operated across a range of coal types. These data were analysed and considered in conjunction with historical information regarding previous attempts at building underground augers dating back to the 1950s. Drawing on these data a prototype underground auger mining system, the BryDet BUA 600 underground coal recovery auger, was designed and manufactured by the BryDet Development Corporation in collaboration with Eskom and Cutting Edge Technology Pty Ltd with support from Anglo Coal and the Ingwe Coal Corporation Ltd. The prototype BryDet BUA 600 underground coal recovery auger commenced trials in March 2000 at the Matla Mine near Witbank in South Africa. The initial trials were undertaken in an open cut to facilitate the commissioning and training associated with a prototype mining machine. A total of 30 holes was augered in the box cut before the machine moved underground. The prototype BUA 600 first achieved the target penetration depth of 80 m in its third hole. The prototype BUA 600 is a new underground mining system which has passed early testing with ?flying colours? and could provide access to extensive underground coal reserves unmineable by conventional mining techniques both in South Africa and elsewhere around the world.

The report provides a general description of DOM technology, sources for DOM technology, and identifies approaches and requirements for acquisition by the Enterprise of DOM technology by conventional means. The approaches identified assume the Enterprise enters into a contractual/ joint venture arrangement with an uncommitted and competent systems management firm at various stages of the DOM system acquisition process. The approaches provide for training through work/study as well as through direct participation in acquisition programs. The potential success of the alternatives are evaluated in terms of the likelihood of the acquisition of an ongoing Enterprise economic DOM operational capability. The study concludes that sources exist and that the Enterprise should under-take the development of its own technical capability through conceptual design prior to selecting its source for systems management expertise.

The purpose of the Inherently Safe Mining System (ISMS) project is to develop continuous and conventional coal mining equipment and systems which will reduce the incidence of fatal and nonfatal accidents in the working sections of underground bituminous coal mines by application of existing technology. There are several elements of online pedagogy and information technology that are being used in the University of Alaska Fairbanks’(UAF) course “ES 201: Computer Techniques,” to enhance classroom teaching. The use of information technology in this class grew from a desire to make lecture notes available to students. This has grown to include a sophisticated, online delivery software package. It provides chat rooms, discussion groups, and online testing and grading. Online delivery aside, the class uses the telnet, e-mail and C++/FOR-TRAN compiler facilities of the university server during class to enhance learning. During class, for example, the students read the lecture notes on the Web browser, telnet to their university Unix accounts, check their e-mail and download programs (to be covered in class) sent by me, and then compile, run and modify the programs. The class, therefore, requires students to be active most of the time. This ensures their full attention and better learning due to the hands-on experience (Fig. 1).
