Lime Cement column stabilization of soft clay and sand in Salt Lake City, Utah and in San Francisco California is described and discussed. Stabilization permitted the construction, in a single stage, of a 14 m MSE wall on "medium" clay in Salt Lake City. It was used to mitigate the potential for liquefaction in San Francisco and to stabilize the Young Bay Mud beneath the BART extension to San Francisco Airport. These applications are described and the field measurements of performance are reported.

Introduction In recent years - even months - the number of articles on computers has increased rapidly. One can hardly pick up a newspaper or magazine without seeing a computer-related article. The article usually explains how the computer will change our lives. Many of us have some concern about the nature and type of change. For most of us, though, the problem is lack of information and understanding about how computers work. In other words, how do we make cost-effective decisions about computers? This three-part series will explain, simply, what a microcomputer is, how it works, and how to decide if you need one. This first article will define terms and briefly discuss areas where computerization might be economic. The second article will discuss geology and mining applications. The third article will discuss plant, administrative, and geotechnical areas as well as the future of software development in the minerals industry. Terms and Concepts All computers have input and output devices and a central processing unit (CPU). Information - instructions and data - is communicated to the computer by means of input devices. These instructions to the computer are converted into language that the computer understands. This causes the instructions to be carried out in the CPU. The result of these operations is translated back into language that we understand. This information is then sent to output devices such as printers and video display tubes. Traditionally, peripherals were devices separate from the main-frame (the CPU and memory) and were used to input, output, and store information or instructions. Today, peripherals perform the same functions though they may be housed in the same cabinet as the CPU and memory. Historically, peripherals included all input and output devices not part of the mainframe. Input devices include keyboards, magnetic tape, and card readers. Tapes and disks are input as well as output devices. Output devices are printers, CRTs (Cathode Ray Tubes), and any mass storage device capable of storing data when directed to do so by the computer or the program. In fact, any mass storage device that can give the computer data when requested is an input device. Mass storage devices include floppy disks (thin, round sheets of plastic covered by metal particles), and hard disks. The latter are thicker and more densely coated with metal particles. This allows much more information to be stored. Another type of mass storage is magnetic tape. Its type and size varies widely. Processing and Storage Any computer understanding must include how instructions and data are processed and stored. Information is stored as a positive or a negative field known as a "bit." There are eight bits in a byte. The bits can be represented as either a one or a zero. Thus the code for a byte representing the numeral one is 00110001. The byte representing the letter A is 01000001. These codes are from the American Standard Code for Information Interchange (ASCII). ASCII defines the standard set of characters including alpha, numeric, and special characters. The computer's memory has allocated locations where instructions as well as incoming information can be stored. All information and instructions are stored as binary numbers bit by bit - zeros and ones. The amount of data that can be stored is referred to as either thousands or millions of bits or bytes. The letter "K" is used to designate one thousand units. The letter "M" is used to mean one millon units (one meg). Hydraulic transport has been considered as one of the most economical methods in transferring granular materials over relatively long distances. In the natural world, it is used to transport basic material required for the support of life; in industry, it is a method widely adopted for handling materials. But the phenomena of hydraulic transport has not yet been thoroughly understood. As most of them are conditioned by a number of hydraulic and mechanical parameters, of which the basic relationships are not fully known, the traditional approach in relating these parameters to the energy requirement is purely empirical in nature. Empirical formulas, such as that proposed by Durand, (1) only give satisfactory results over a selected range of (particle size)/(pipe diameter) ratios and slurry concentration. When the case is more complicated or when new situations arise, the empirical formulas fail to give good predictory results. In fact, most of these formulas are based upon dimensional analysis, where the underlying physical interaction is not explicitly considered. Apart from the loosely related, non-dimensional groups incorporated in the formulas, there is practically no analytical means for modifying the formula so as to enable it to cope with more complex real physical situations. Although it seems quite remote that a complete rigorous solution to this highly complex problem could be generated in the near future, it is generally recognized (2, 3) that research in this area should be directed to more comprehensive studies of the obscure phenomena. The New Croton Aqueduct (NCA) was the first major water supply tunnel for New York City. The 50-km (31-mi) long tunnel has 33 open shafts 6 m (20 ft) to 121 m (397 ft) deep. The tunnel and shafts are lined with brick and mortar, with cast iron lining and pressure covers in six pressurized shafts. Details of the 1895 construction are provided and compared to modern construction techniques. The paper provides rehabilitation techniques for the shafts and pressure covers, including grouting, epoxy lining, temporary bulkhead design and installation and placement of tremie concrete 98 m (320ft) below the water level in a 122 m (400ft)deep shaft using a Remote Operated Vehicle (ROV) to monitor the placement.

Todays End of Life vehicles are shredded and their metal components recovered and recycled by standard methods. The remaining non-metallic fraction is shredder residue, and contains vast amounts of high value engineering plastics. None are today recovered. Discussed are the developmental approaches used in the first process to recover these valuable plastics. Examined are initial laboratory studies, pilot plant design and construction, product development, results, and flowchart explanations.

High-volatile A bituminous coal from the Allen mine, Las Animas County, Colo., blended with char produced from the same coal yielded accept-able metallurgical coke in a 500-lb movable-wall test oven. Nineteen experimental runs were carried out using several concentration levels of two different chars, 5.6 and 19.6 percent volatile matter, produced by entrainment carbonization of the base coal. With the higher-volatile char, an acceptable coke was produced at a 22.5-percent concentration; the lower-volatile char did not produce an acceptable coke at the concentrations investigated.

The objective of this study was two-fold: 1. To perform a world literature search pertinent to the analysis, selection and design of hoisting systems and their components and to codify the search into a literature compendium. The search resulted in a technical data file of over 1500 hard copy items. The compendium index was also suitable for establishing a comprehensive computer-loaded data base on the subject. 2. To develop a comprehensive system of guidelines to cover salient aspects of analysis, selection and design of electrical, mechanical and structural components of a hoisting system with a view to establish parameters for maximum safety and efficiency of operation, installation and revision of the system. 3. Major mechanical components in the hoist and mechanical drive train are considered. Design and specification criteria based on American standards and practices are developed as they apply to typical mine hoist arrangements.

An investigation of the quenching behavior of coal dust-air flames was carried out. The literature relevant to coal dust-air flames was reviewed, including information on the agglomeration, sedimentation, and dispersal of dust clouds. The simple equations relating the various concentrations involved in dust flame propagation are given and their implications elaborated. It is shown that the concentration seen by a moving flame in a sedimenting dust cloud can differ significantly from the concentration commonly measured in such experiments. The known dust cloud phenomena which appeared significant in flame propagation studies were experimentally evaluated, and quenching diameters, flame speeds, and lean propagation limits for several tube diameters measured. For Pittsburgh seam coal, the Minimum Quenching Diameter (MQD) for dust between 10 and 20 µm was found to be between 0.7 and 0.8 cm, and the lean propagation for 3.2-cm tubes to be approximately 200 mg/liter. Similar MQD data were also obtained for Pocahontas and Sewell coals, Beulah lignite, and a 50-gal./ton oil shale. The effect of temperature, coal particle size, and propagation tube material were also investigated.

This report describes the engineering feasibility and economic advantages of using a steep angle conveyance (SAC) system in conjunction with medium and large draglines to transport spoil in a typical Western Coal Mine. The SAC system, including a receiving hopper, a steep angle conveyor and a sticker/spreader, is capable of processing overburden material at the rate of 7,000 tons/hr. The unique feature of this system is the steep angle conveyor which transports the overburden material from the pit bottom to the top of the spoil at angles to 45 degrees. Compared to other means of cross-pit conveyance considered during this study, the SAC system offers the advantage of easier operation, lower conveyance cost and greater mobility. The results of this study have shown that integration of the SAC system into both established and planned new mines would improve the overall mining operation, expand the operating capability of existing equipment and reduce mining end reclamation cost.

"INTRODUCTION Three representative lots of ore wore obtained from the Aguila minim district in Arizona during the Bureau's exploration of manganese deposits there. Since only selectively mined ore from this district will meet commercial-grade specifications, the ores were studied to determine their amenability to concentration.Although the purpose of the investigation was to determine the possibilities of the district as a source of commercial-grade manganese, testing was sufficiently comprehensive to indicate the response of the ores to several different types of treatment. Many data of secondary importance have been omitted, end only the more pertinent tests are presented in detail.At the beginning of the investigation of manganese-ore beneficiation in December 1940, the only product marketable to. Metals Reserve Company was ferro-grade manganese, grade B, the requirements for which follow: Mn, min., 48 percent; Fe, max., 7 percent; Si02, max., 10 percent; P, max., O.18 percent; Al12O3, max., 6 percent; Zn, max., 1 percent.Later the specifications were modified gradually. As of May 15, 1943, manganese products were acceptable if they contained over 35 percent manganese and less than 3 percent zinc and 1 percent phosphorus. Prices were based upon material containing 48 percent manganese, 6.O percent iron, and. 11 percent silica plus alumina. Premiums were paid for manganese con¬tent over 48 percent and iron content under 6 percent, penalties being imposed upon products containing loss than 48 percent manganese or more than 6 percent iron or more than U. percent. silica plus alumina.. The specifications for commercial manganese further required that the maximum particle size be 12 inches and that 75 percent of the product be coarser than 20-mesh. Therefore, fine material, such as table and flotation concentrates, had to be nodulized or sintered. In addition, carbonate manganese ores were not acceptable unless calcined.."

In this study, NIOSH researchers conducted a machine learning analysis to examine whether a model could be constructed to assess the probability of dynamic failure occurrence based on geochemical and petrographic data. Random forest, cluster analysis and dimension reduction were all applied. The objective of dimensionality reduction was to explore patterns and groupings in the data and search for relations between compositional parameters. Cluster analyses were performed to determine if an algorithm could find clusters with given class memberships and to what extent misclassifications of dynamic failure status occurred. A random forest analysis performed on data from the Pennsylvania Coal Sample Databank cross-referenced with accident data from the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) determined that 7 parameters of the 18 examined exerted the most influence on results. Cluster analysis on data after dimensionality reduction resulted in a hierarchal clustering algorithm finding four clusters, with one relatively distinct dynamic failure cluster, and three clusters consisting mostly of control group members but with a small number of dynamic failure members.

Volume II of this two-part series on Submarine Tailings Disposal (STD) as a tailings management option for coastal and island mines contains descriptions of lesser known case histories. The Misima gold mine (Papua New Guinea) and the Black Angel lead-zinc mine (Greenland) are described in some detail as the best documented cases. Atlas copper mine (The Philippines) is less fully described due to relative lack of documentation. The Misima and Atlas STD systems are working to their design criteria. At Black Angel the system adopted did not prevent contamination for a number of reasons, which are now understood. Two cases are described where STD is being developed. They are the Cayeli Bakir copper mine Turkey), and the Toquepala and Cuajone mines (Peru). There is excellent documentation available for both cases. Three case histories are described where tailings have reached the sea either through beach or river discharge. In one case the STD option has been explored (Marcopper Mine, The Philippines). In the others we explore in hindsight whether STD might have been a viable alternative using the Screening Criteria that this Volume develops - see below. The mines are Bougainville Copper Mine in Papua New Guinea, and Jordan River Mine (Canada). There is potential for STD at all three sites. Finally, the Volume presents Screening Criteria for appraising STD, based on the experience in design, operation and environmental impact reviewed in the case histories.

Pt-Al-X alloys have shown good mechanical properties and adequate oxidation resistance. Starting from a promising Pt-Al-Cr alloy, the influence of Ni additions was investigated. After ageing finely dispersed precipitates are observed. Nb, Ta, Ti and Re increase strength when added as partial substitute for Al. Minor additions of B increase creep resistance and rupture time remarkably, owing to strengthening of the grain boundaries. The evolution of the alloy development programme as well as selected properties of the multi-component Pt-base alloys are presented.

The Tower mill KD-3 is an improved version of the laboratory mills VD-1, KD-1 and KD-2 in which the classifying column has been modified to ensure a quick discharge of products from the comminution section and, on the other hand, a better separation of coarse and fine particles; the latter being collected in a cyclone with a central spiral ribbon. To level the circling airflow through the classifying column and have a strict control over the maximum size of collected particles, a series of experiments was carried out, modifying the internal structure of the column: insertion of a vertical plate, a cone, or a horizontal net. The relationship established between the maximum size of products collected in the cyclone and the duct airflow rate indicates that, independently of the latter, the insertion of a cone in the classifying column could stabilize the maximum size of products collected in the cyclone around 15.1 - 17.5µm. With a horizontal net, the maximal size could be reduced to 8.4 - 11.3µm. This occurrence might result from the collision of coarse particles blown from the comminution zone with the base of the inserted materials and their settling down the bottom of the classifying column.

Coal seam gas (CSG) exploration and development requires the abstraction of significant amounts of water. This is so because gas desorbtion in coal seams takes place only after aquifer pressure has been reduced by prolonged pumping of aquifer water. CSG waters have a specific geochemical signature which is a product of their formation process. These waters have high bicarbonate, high sodium, low calcium, low magnesium, and very low sulphate concentrations. Additionally, chloride concentrations may be high depending on the coal depositional environment. This particular signature is not only useful for exploration purposes, but it also highlights potential environmental issues that can arise as a consequence of CSG water disposal. Since 2002 L&M Coal Seam Gas Ltd and CRL Energy Ltd, have been involved in exploration and development of CSG in New Zealand. Anticipating disposal of CSG waters as a key issue in CSG development, they have been assessing CSG water quality along with exploration work. Coal seam gas water samples from an exploration well in Maramarua closely follow the geochemical signature associated with CSG waters. This has helped to identify CSG potential, while at the same time assessing the chemical characteristics and water generation processes in the aquifer. Neutral pH and high alkalinity suggest that these waters could be easily managed once the sodium and chloride concentrations are reduced to acceptable levels.

Aruba, formerly a. part of the Netherlands Antilles, separated on January I, 1986, and became an autonomous part of the Netherlands. Full independence of the island from the Netherlands is scheduled for 1996. In this chapter, however, Aruba's statistics are included with those of the Netherlands Antilles. Tourism continued to be the main industry of the island, which continued to depend heavily on imports, mostly from the United States. During the year, the Government was preparing legislation to regulate the exploration of oil deposits in the relatively shallow sea around Aruba.

Various styles of gold mineralisation pose problems during sampling because of their complex gold grade distribution and presence of coarse gold. Effective sampling and sample preparation forms the basis of resource estimates. The design of a sampling and assaying protocol must be based on a thorough understanding of the mineralisation in question, which should include consideration of gold particle size and mass distribution. The proportion of coarse gold within samples has a profound effect on the requirements for sample preparation and assaying. Choice of preparation procedure and assay type is of critical importance if sampling errors are to be minimised. Traditional fire assays, using small charge sizes, often understate assays gained from large charge sizes and techniques such as screen fire assay and LeachWELL. Proper application of the Theory of Sampling reduces errors during collection, preparation and assaying. A quality control/quality assurance program must be implemented and critically assessed. A case study from the Ballarat mine is presented, which is characterised by substantial quantities of coarse-gold hosted in quartz veins. Diamond core drilling is the key input into resource delineation. A number of different sampling and assay options have been trialled over the recent project history. The current sampling protocol utilises whole drill core, using LeachWELL assays after logging and photography.CITATION:Dominy, S C, 2017.
