Introduction Under our present civilization, industrial developments will be greatest in those areas in which energy .can be most economically produced and efficiently used, where labour is in adequate supply, and where markets for the products of industry are available. A knowledge of fuels- the present major sources of energy- and of their utilization is therefore of vital importance. With that in mind, the aim in this paper will be to outline the known reserves of fuels in Alberta, to give their characteristics, to indicate the markets served by each, and to offer some suggestions for the future development of the coal industry. The paper should be regarded as a compilation of published data rather than as an original treatise. Alberta is richly blessed by having large reserves of mineral fuels. The estimated reserves of coal are 46,562 million tons. Alberta is the oil and gas province of Canada. The world's largest deposit of bituminous sand occurs along the Athabaska river in Alberta. In addition, there are large areas of forested land in the northern and western sections of the Province, and the rivers serve for the development of hydro-power.

Productivity in underground metal and nonmetal mines is contingent upon work methods, mine layout, and ore handling techniques. One of the most important factors impacting productivity is the efficient movement of men, materials and supplies from the surface into and throughout the mine. Various transportation systems such as man-trains, service shafts, rubber-tired diesel equipment, etc. are currently used to transport men and supplies in underground mines. In many underground mines, it is not uncommon for a worker to spend 25% of his eight-hour working day traveling from the surface to his work area and returning to the surface.

The case study sets the context of the application: A conceptual study of a gold open pit mining project requires a cut-off grade analysis, which consists in develop a cut-off grade policy that maximises the net present value (NPV) using Lane’s and break-even model.

In most oil fields, natural gas is the major source of energy causing flow of oil to the well. The amount of gas produced With the oil generally exceeds actual energy requirements, so that in time the gas reserve of the field becomes seriously depleted and the oil production nest be stimulated by some auxiliary means. One of these is to repressure the oil formation with natural gas; or, where a gas supply is not available, often air is used. Although air is a cheap and convenient repressuring medium, its use sometimes is attended with several disadvantages. First, the return air-gas mixture decreases rapidly in fuel value, often until it can be used no longer as a source of power. At the same time, explosive mixtures may result if recycling is used, causing hazards to life and equipment. Second, some fields experience considerable trouble with the formation of emulsions which become increasingly difficult to treat. Although there is no definite proof that air repressuring always causes these emulsions, many operators are convinced that this is the case.

This report covers the activities of a feasibility study of fiber optics technology fur use in mines. The objective of the study was to evaluate, both technically and cost-wise, the possible use of fiber optic technology for underground mine communication and monitoring systems. The first phase of the study was devoted to the collection of information on the present underground mine communication systems and monitoring techniques, and the status of applicable fiber optic technology. In the second ph se of the study, a communication and monitoring system for a hypothetical underground coal mine was designed and the costs estimated. The significant findings and conclusions are presented.

"Upon successful commissioning of the Stage Grinding Project (Cormier et. al., 2002), process improvements predicted through pilot plant testing were obtained in several flotation circuits, resulting in higher grades and recoveries for zinc and lead concentrates. Subsequent to establishing new baseline operating conditions from the Stage Grind Project implementation, additional opportunities were identified, and through the application of Six Sigma methodologies further gains were made. Six Sigma improvement projects were carried out in the copper-lead, zinc, lead upgrading and bulk flotation circuits. The overall performance increase resulting from incremental improvement projects has been substantial.Most remarkably, given the operational maturity up to the late 1980’s, the Brunswick concentrator team has continued to deliver a steady stream of major improvements over the past fifteen years. While senior managers and their programs have changed several times, there have been some critical constants over the long run. Common elements have been a commitment to team work, a commitment to recruit and maintain technical personnel, a structured business improvement framework supported organizationally by senior management, and focus on a few priority initiatives rather than trying to fix everything at once.The paper briefly discusses the longer term setting and then endeavors to illustrate, with examples, how improvements are presently achieved by applying the Six Sigma quality program.INTRODUCTIONThe Noranda Inc. Brunswick Mine, located near Bathurst, New Brunswick, is one of the world’s larger lead/zinc mines. Milling of ore began in 1964 from the No. 12 orebody, with an expansion in 1966 to accommodate ore from the No. 6 mine. In excess of 100 million tonnes have been milled to date. The concentrator employs differential flotation to produce lead, zinc, copper, and lead/zinc bulk concentrates. The ore is massive sulphide, with approximately 20% valuable minerals, 60% pyrite and 20% silicates."

"OPENING REMARKS Yesterday and today we have heard some very interesting papers on operating matters and some of you are probably wondering what we are now doing talking about Communications in Plant Design. Let me tell you! Before the techniques we have heard being discussed can be used, there has to be a properly operating plant. It is certainly a fact that many mineral processing plants achieve only limited success and a number of them can even be said to be failures. Some of you sitting here are probably living with operating problems that are clue to errors in the design.If the histories of these problem plants are examined, it will be found that in many cases, the necessary skills were available during the period of the plant design. There was extensive operating know¬ledge together with a full range of project expertise. Why then the failures? In a substantial number of cases it can be traced to the old, old problem of communications. As plants get bigger, money costs more and smooth startups become more important, it becomes less and less economic to fix up any design errors during plant operations.During our careers in mineral processing, nearly all of us will be involved in at least one plant design and I feel that it is as well if we understand some of these communication difficulties that can lead to a problem plant. There is little point in us being experts in mineral processing if the knowledge we have acquired doesn't somehow get incorporated into the plant.I would, therefore, like to present this short paper that mentions a few of the significant communication problems that can occur during the design of mining and mineral processing plants, together with some thoughts on answers to these problems."

Pollution from radioactive nuclides, principally Ra226, in liquid waste from uranium mills can be minimized by reusing the waste solution within the mill. Such reuse of waste solution in the Vitro Chemical Co.-type process was investigated in the laboratory. Vitro employs an acid leaching process for dissolution of the uranium, countercurrent decantation for liquid-solid separation and washing, and amine solvent extraction for recovery of the uranium from solution. The simulated reuse of barren raffinate in the mill circuit was carried through two separate laboratory campaigns of 29 and 31 cycles. Conventional chloride stripping of the amine was employed in the first campaign, whereas nitrate stripping was used in the second campaign. Dissolution of uranium from the are in the acid leaching circuit averaged 96 percent. Washing efficiencies of 98 to 99 percent were attained by using 4 volume tons of combined raffinate and makeup water per ton of ore. Uranium recovery from the pregnant solution using a 5-percent solution of amine LA-1 in kerosine ranged from 99.3 to 99.9 percent.

INTRODUCTION The Macassa Division of Lac Minerals Ltd. is a high grade gold mine that has been operating in Kirkland Lake, Ontario for the past 51 years. It produces approximately 120,000 tonnes of ore per year, averaging approximately 18.7 grams per tonne (0.45 ounzes per ton) of gold. Over the years, the ore body has been developed to a point where mining takes place below the 1,220 m (4,000 feet) elevation and 1,830 m (6,000 feet) west of the original shaft. The mine is currently serviced by two surface and two winze shafts. (Figure 1). The ore body extends below the 1,930 m (6,400 feet) Level which is the bottom of the existing mining operation. An ambitious underground exploration program has substantially increased these reserves. Concurrent with the discovery of greater reserves, has been rapidly escalating mining costs, particularly labour which constituted 66% of the total cost in 1981. These costs continued to escalate as the major proportion of mining was carried out to the west, far away from the existing hoisting systems. This required three lift hoisting for men, materials and ore. I n addition to the increased travel time and ore handling expense, increased humidity and temperature and ventilation and compressed air losses have added to the inefficiency of the operations. As a result, studies were initiated in 1980 to assess the future of the Macassa operation.

Historically bauxite-based refractories have been used in applications where andalusite-based refractories could work. Bauxite-based refractories were chosen over andalusite-based refractories mainly because of the availability of low-cost Chinese bauxite and also because many furnaces were designed by international companies that cannot easily access high-quality products. Currently, the availability of low-cost bauxite is under threat as a result of high export duties and tariffs as well as restrictions on the amount of material that China allows to be exported. South Africa is a major producer of andalusite, and this guarantees stability with respect to both availability and price. Refractories based on andalusite have an added economic advantage over bauxite-based refractories in that unlike bauxite, which requires high-temperature calcination before use, andalusite is used in its raw state. This paper constitutes a literature study of the merits, both technical and economic, of using refractories based on andalusite compared to bauxite-based refractories. A self-contained breathing apparatus has been developed to provide complete respiratory protection for a miner in an irrespirable atmosphere. The apparatus has the desired features of comfort, reliability, maintainability, and quick-donning capability. The apparatus is packaged in a moistureproof envelope and is protected in a shock absorbing, fiberglass resin carrying case. The apparatus is a small, lightweight, one-time-use device that can be readily worn on a miner's belt, requires no maintenance and is designed to have a shelf life of five years and a carrying life of three years. It is deployed to the use position in a period of 15 to 30 seconds. Man tests conducted in-house and at the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) testing laboratories established that this unit meets all performance requirements listed in the Code of Federal Regulations, Title 30, Part 11, Subchapter B, Subpart H (CFR 30, Part 11) for respiratory protective devices. The unit, which has received joint approval (TC-13F-37) on a prototype basis from the Mining Enforcement and Safety Administration (MESA) and NIOSH has: (1) Ten-minute service life under escape conditions. (2) Thirty-minute service life when the wearer is at rest. (3) Peak-to-peak breathing resistance of less than our inches water column height. (4) Inspired gas temperature of less than 135°F. (5) Breathing gas contents greater than 19.5 volume per cent of oxygen and less than 2.5 per cent carbon dioxin. (6) A weight (complete in carrying case) of 2.75 lbs. (7) A carrying case size of 6-1/2"x 5-1/8"x 3-1/8".

Probably the newest thing in mining safety, or safety for mines, is the apparent dissatisfaction on the part of the mineral industries, as represented by both management and labor, and the general public of the Nation, with the safety record of the mining industry. This is reflected by published comments and papers in the technical press;l-9 in labor periodicals,10,11 in popular journals and periodicals,l2, 13 and in the daily press; also by discussions of the Safety Committees sponsored by the National Safety Council,9, 14-15 the American Mining Congress,l.l6 the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers,2,4 the Mine Inspectors' Institute of Amerthe Coal Mining Institute of America,5 19 the American Standards Association, and others.20.21 Mining safety is a joint problem of management and the individual workman. Safety is not attained and will not be attained solely by laws, decrees, and commands because, if it could be done in this manner, acceptable mining safety would have been achieved long ago by the individual states in our Nation and by the nations abroad. The best safety performance is found at plants where management provides a safe environment for the workers; where supervision is efficient and super- visors, others concerned with promoting safety, and the individual worker know through training, experience, and personal contact the safe and unsafe practices of their field; and where the trained individual worker has become safety-minded by experience, quiet influence, unconscious suggestion, and personal guidance. Despite what may be said to the contrary, progress has been and is being made in mining safety. This is shown in Fig 1 to 4. It is beyond the scope of this paper to give possible reasons for the valleys and peaks in the fatal-injury rates. Some recent factors that appear to be contributing to the improvement in these rates are briefly discussed. Aside from mining equipment, "what's new in mining safety" for some mines has been in effect or was tried by others long ago. A safety pro- gram is a living thing; as such, it must be vitalized and continuously fed with enthusiasm, constructive action, and improvements. Because safety is concerned with human conduct, it is necessary to practice safety at all times; if not, it is soon forgotten, and accidents occur. Mining-safety Records The large employment and production concerned with anthracite contribute much to the mining-safety records of the mineral industry. Approximately 81,000 persons are. employed in this industry having mines concentrated in an area of 480 square miles in northeastern Pennsylvania. Because of the achievement of the anthracite industry in safety during 1948, the other branches of the mineral industry can profit by a study of what has been done to achieve that record. Where one mineral is produced by other large groups having methods of mining that are similar in many respects to the anthracite-mining methods, an achievement in such a large industry is important. Salient factors concerned with safetye in the anthracite industry are: no radical change has occurred in the mining-safety regulations pertaining to anthracite mines. The emergence of China as a global economic power has not been without its birth pangs and the current coal market is testimony to this. Traditionally the coal market has been controlled by mature economies that functioned along balanced lines of supply and demand. The emergence of China and India as major forces in the international market has shifted this balance of power from mature economies to the developing economies of China and India. Of late Chinese Central Government policy has caused wide swings in the supply of Chinese coking coal and thermal coal to the international Asian markets. This has resulted in huge increases in demand for coal from producers in Australia, Canada, Indonesia, USA and Russia. Additionally since the late 1990s the liberalised Chinese economy has been growing by between nine to 12 per cent per annum. The corresponding rise in the standard of living of their 1.4 billion people has resulted in a strong demand for raw materials, initially met by domestic production and more recently met by the importation of raw materials including iron ore, oil, coking coal and thermal coal. Commensurate with this growth in China has been the emergence of India (pop one billion) as another major developing economy in the region. Whilst the Indian standard of living is lower than that of the Chinese, this subcontinent still has some 300 million people with middle class consumption demands. India is a major importer of oil, coking coal and thermal coal. It exports iron ore to China with growth parallel to China (seven to nine per cent per annum). These combined new demands from India and China have put unprecedented pressure on the global supply of coking and thermal coals. These pressures are reflected in the current world spot prices for coking and thermal coals which are at historically high levels. Whilst current demand from China and India is high it is anticipated that new projects will partially satisfy this increasing demand. Expectations are that overall thermal and coking coal prices will rise steadily. This paper seeks to identify the potential effects of Chinese and Indian economic growth on the international markets for coal.

In 2005, CANMET-MMSL used its pool of expertise in ground control, open pit and underground mine engineering, mineral processing, information technology and applied mineralogy to launch a mine-to-mill research project. The objective of the project was to optimize the distribution of rock breakage energy among blasting, crushing and grinding activities, thereby maximizing the efficiency of energy utilization within comminution processes. Tests were designed to demonstrate that this approach could reduce energy consumption, thus contributing to the reduction of green house gas (GHG) production in the Canadian mining industry. The project was accomplished in collaboration with DynoConsult and Dyno Nobel Canada Inc., a world leader in commercial explosives. Data analysis from 12 blasts (six with electronic and six with pyrotechnic detonators) in three different geological formations of a quarry (soft, medium and hard rock) shows that electronic blasting technology increases rock fragmentation by 15% (in hard rock) to 20% (in soft rock). A more uniform rock fragment size distribution is also obtained. The impact of the improved quality blast product on downstream processes of the quarry is a productivity increase of 5% in rock excavation and transportation, an energy reduction of 10% at the primary crusher and an increase of 15% of the primary crusher throughput. Extended to the Canadian mining industry, such results would represent a GHG emission reduction of about 0.05 Mt/y. A soft-sensor prototype, based on primary crusher data (i.e., energy consumption, throughput, feed and product size distribution) and a simplified computerized process model, was developed for on-line measurement of the rock operating work index. Additionally, 385 rock samples and specimens were collected and prepared to determine the tensile and compressive strength of the rock material, to evaluate the aggregate crushing work index and to examine the development of micro- and macro-fractures by means of binocular and SEM microscopy. Blast-induced rock damage was evaluated at the end of the laboratory-testing program. Even though a reduction of rock hardness of around 30% was observed after blasting, the impact of the blasting method (i.e., use of electronic or pyrotechnic detonators) on the induced rock damage could not be observed. It is either absent or not perceptible with the accuracy of the measuring techniques and the number of samples analyzed.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with a southwestern Pennsylvania coal mining company, BethEnergy Inc., Mine No. 60, Eighty-Four, PA, recently assessed the feasibility of using pre driven recovery rooms (open entry recovery) when longwall mining to increase the productivity of the coal extraction process. Two recovery entries, one 200 ft long and another 600 ft long, were supplementally supported with bolts, channels, and wire mesh, and either fly ash-cement piers or fiber cribs, then mined into by the longwall face. The recovery entries showed little deterioration as the supports provided adequate resistance to the front abutment loading. Compared with conventional recovery methods, the fullface recovery room allowed for panel extraction to be completed nearly 17 days faster and to reduce face equipment move time by 1-1/2 days. The potential productivity increase accompanying recovery rooms is greater than the cost of supporting a fullface recovery room. The fullface recovery room provided over 18 additional production days and the opportunity to mine nearly 68,400 st of coal per year per panel mined.

Over the life of the mine, ore pass integrity deteriorates, which may eventually result in the ore pass no longer being fit for purpose. This paper presents several case studies of successful ore pass rehabilitation exercises.

The effects of water addition on the solid-state reaction between Cr2O3 and Na2CO3 at low temperatures (up to 873 K) were investigated to determine its possible influence on the reaction rate and the degree of conversion to soluble chromate. Experiments at high temperatures were conducted for comparison. It was found that adding water to the mixture before roasting enhanced both reaction rate and yield significantly. The reactions followed the Lesokhin-Tempelman equation at low temperature and the Ginstling-Brounshtein equation at above 973 K; the respective activation energies were 95 and 22 kJ/mol

Several of the larger copper projects recently built have included a molybdenum byproduct circuit as part of the overall project due to the favorable molybdenum market conditions and overall economic contribution to the project. This paper provides a summary of moly plant flotation practices across a number of both recent projects and historical ones. Modern Molybdenum flotation flowsheets predominantly incorporate self-aspirated cells and forced air cells with nitrogen addition. The paper provides insight into the process considerations, capital and operating costs associated with both of the cell types. It also reviews metallurgical aspects and important safety aspects. Other aspects including instrumentation and degree of automation are also discussed along with overall plant design.
