A point-symmetrical linear coupled consolidation model with displacement boundary condition is suggested for the description of the consolidation around the pile tip after pile penetration. Analytical solution is given. Main features of the solutions are predicted by the analysis of the system of differential equations and, the boundary conditions.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the mechanics of fuming of iron-carbon melts during top-blowing with oxygen. Melts weighing 45 lb were prepared in an induction furnace and blown with oxygen by means of water-cooled lances. The rate of fuming was measured and correlated with the operating variables. The data showed that the primary cause of fuming was a boil at the bath surface in the impingement zone of the oxygen jet. Nucleation of the carbon monoxide bubbles producing the boil was apparently brought about by the precipitation of an oxide phase. The actual fuming mechanism involved partial oxidation and vaporization of bubble films and fine metal spray generated by the bursting of the bubbles. Bubbles that formed outside the impingement zone produced little fume. The distribution of trace elements between the metal and fume strongly indicated that the fume contained fine spray particles as well as particles that had condensed from vapor. The rate of fuming was found to be proportional to the carbon content of the metal) the concentration of oxygen in the jet) and the bath temperature) provided that a continuous boil occurred. In the absence of a boil) very little fume was produced.

Numerous investigators have studied grinding. Each has contributed his bit to a literature that is difficult to correlate. Too many of the results have been transformed into curves with so many "inflection points" and "counterflexures" that they obscure the issue. Some of the investigators have neglected the very essence of the problem, namely the power and the amount of material to which a known amount of work was applied. The purpose of this paper is to show the ease with which results can be interpreted when these quantities are duly recognized. Some grinding tests will be given for illustration. Grinding studies are of two kinds: (1) Study of the character of the ore and (2) study of the performance of the machines. Several ores may be crushed by a given machine, or several machines may be used on a given ore. The illustrations given in this report cover both objectives.

Crude oils from fields throughout the world are analyzed by the Bureau of Mines to determine the characteristics of the oils and their contribution to the petroleum resources of the world. Analyses are reported for 169 foreign crude oil samples from 122 oilfields in Africa, Asia, Australia, the Caribbean, Europe, North America, and South America. Tables show the geographic and geo- logic origin of the samples, names of companies that supplied the samples, annual production for the fields, general characteristics and analytical and computed data, hydrocarbon-type data, cumulative production of the larger fields, and references to sources of geological and field development information. The analyses were made by the Bureau of Mines routine method and comparisons may be made with more than 8,000 other such analyses.

This report describes the total effort that went into developing environmental test criteria for general mine instrumentation. The project was a two-phase effort. Phase I consisted of research and mine visits to develop an environmental profile for mine instrumentation. The profile was translated into general requirements and then into test requirements. A review of existing government and commercial specifications was performed to determine if they matched mine instrumentation test requirements. Finally, a set of environmental test procedures was developed for the testing of mine instrumentation. Phase II consisted of selecting and purchasing sample mine instrumentation and subjecting them to the previously developed tests. The purpose was twofold: (1) to evaluate the criteria developed for use as an instrumentation test document and (2) to determine the effects of the various criteria on a representative sample of both proven and newly developed instrumentation. The test criteria were then modified, based on the results of the testing, and are listed therein.

A review of historic mining information and geological literature pertaining to the Alpine Mine, Lyell Goldfield has been completed. As a result of this work the Alpine reef is inferred to be associated with an upright anticline with a sub-horizontal axis. Structural profiles prepared from limited underground data indicate that the reef is subparallel to the eastern limb of the anticline and cuts across the western limb. Reassessment of structural mapping completed by the New Zealand Geological Survey indicates that Greenland Group metasediments within the Lyell Goldfield are folded into a series of opposed assymetic folds with sub-horizontal axes. It is suggested that the anticline which harbours the Alpine Reef is located on the axis of a synclinorium. Along the western limb of the synclinorium the subsidiary folds have steep west dipping limbs and shallow east dipping limbs (western sense of assymmetry) whereas shallow west dips and steep east dips are typical of the eastern limb. The notion of quartz mineralisation occupying the axis of a synclinorium is contrary to the situation in the Reefton Goldfield where quartz mineralisation is affiliated with folds associated with an anticlinorium. Historic mine data reveals that below No.4 Level the quartz-gold mineralisation, in the Alpine Mine, occupied a steeply dipping ore channel. The strike of the channel was to the northwest and within this structure the are shoots plunged to the north at approximately 40¦. Archival mine plans show that two quartz bodies, the North and South Blocks, were present at No. 4 Level. Although the North Block was followed down to No 14 Level (530 m vertically below the surface outcrop) the South Block was only mined as far as No 7 Level. Sampling on No 7 Level together with the results of trial mining suggest that the grade of quartz underfoot in South Block is low. Information from the Mines Statements and mapping undertaken by the Gold Prospecting Scheme reveals that faulting had a profound influence on the intregity and extent of the Alpine Reef. The reef occupies a Inajor shear zone but little is known about it. It is also apparent that below No 7 Level the reef was progressively shattered by faulting and this may be the chief reason for the decrease in grade in the lower levels of the mine. No substantive facts are available about wall rock alteration effects adjacent to the Alpine Reef Still this is not surprising considering that comments on the mineralised pug envelope and breccias adjacent to the mined quartz shoots at the Globe - Progress Prospect were omitted from contemporary publications. In spite of this the existance of sulphide bearing reef casing lithologies cannot be completely dismissed since 9.15 m of 'reef track' has been reported in Reids No 2 Level.

Pachuca tanks are extensively used for the cyanide leaching of gold and the carbonate leaching of uranium, processes in which oxygen mass transfer plays a very important role. Experiments were carried out to clarify the effect of design and operating parameters on oxygen mass transfer. Parameters such as the ratio of tank height to tank diameter, the ratio of draught-tube diameter to tank diameter and the tank design were found not to influence oxygen mass transfer. Results also showed that equal superficial gas velocities may be used as a criterion for scaling up oxygen mass transfer in both full-centre-column and free-air-lift Pachuca tanks with clear water. A volume-averaged, volumetric gas-liquid mass-transfer coefficient (k'av) was used to characterise oxygen mass transfer in full-centre-column tanks. The axial dispersion model was used to determine k'av. The resulting model used only tank geometry and air flow rate as inputs for the prediction of k'av in industrial-scale tanks. Predictions from the model show clearly that "local" mass-transfer coefficients, measured at one or two locations, may not adequately represent gas-liquid mass transfer in industrial tanks. The recovery of copper and cobalt from ancient copper slags from the Küre region of Turkey was investigated. A fayalitic-type of ancient copper slag containing 1.24% Cu, 0.53% Co and 53.16% Fe were subjected to an experimental study. Two different routes were followed to recover the metal values. The first route was roasting the slag with pyrite followed by leaching. The second route was flotation of the slags, roasting of the flotation tailings with pyrite and leaching. The second route was found to be suitable for the treatment of the copper slag studied. In the flotation step, a copper concentrate containing approximately 11% Cu was produced with a 77% recovery while 93% of the cobalt stayed in the tailings. In the roasting experiments, the effects of roasting time, pyrite: slag ratio and roasting temperature on the dissolution efficiencies of Cu and Co were investigated, and the optimum conditions were determined. In the tests, 87% of the cobalt dissolution was observed after one hour of roasting at 500°C with a pyrite: slag ratio of 3:1. The copper dissolution in the tests was 31%. Based on the results of this study, a process flowsheet is proposed for the evaluation of these slags.

One of the best methods by which the results of accident-prevention work can be measured for any particular period is to keep an accurate record of the accident experience, which may then also be compared with the experience of others. The purpose of this report is to compare records of the salt-mining companies operating in Louisiana, and their assistance in making available their accident records is gratefully acknowledged. PRODUCTION Four companies produce salt in Louisiana -Avery Salt Co., Avery Island; Jefferson Island Salt Mining Co., Jefferson Island; Myles Salt Co., Weeks; and Carey Salt Co., Winnfield. Three of these companies operate within 30 miles of each other in the southern part of the State, and the other operates in the central part.

Titanium aluminide of composition Ti-47.5 at.% Al was prepared by melting titanium and aluminium of commercial purity with additions of precious metals of 0, 0.2, 1, 1.5 and 2 at.% content. The microstructure, hardness and oxidation properties were assessed. It was found that at 47.5 at.% Al, the microstructure of plain TiAl alloys was duplex, consisting of duplex lamellar grains and ? grains. The lamellar grains consisted of alternating lamellae of ? (TiAl) and a2(Ti3Al), with overall aluminium content in the range of 43?47 at.%. The ? grains had a aluminium content above 50 at.%. The addition of precious metals to the TiAl alloy resulted in the formation of a new phase, with a high precious metal content, occurring mostly in the ?phase, without any major change to the microstructure. Increasing the amount of precious metals resulted in an increase of the new phase amount, at the expense of the ? phase. The hardness of the different alloys was around 300HV10. Overall, the research has shown that addition of precious metals to TiAl resulted in a slight increase in hardness and a significant improvement of the oxidation resistance. This shows that alloying TiAl with precious metals, at the addition levels investigated, does not alter the mechanical properties very much, but improves oxidation resistance.

The work to be described is part of a comprehensive research on the influence of impurities on the properties of lead. The author had previously compared an electrolytic lead containing less than 0.002% total impurities with a commercial lead containing 0.008% impurities (excluding oxygen) and had shown that the former recrystallised more readily than the latter under the same conditions of cold work and annealing. This difference in properties was attributed to the difference in purity. Electrolytic lead containing only 0.0005% total impurities has been prepared and cast in vacuo. Some interesting effects have been obtained by working and annealing this lead, and by adding silver to it. The preparation of this lead, and the effects obtained thereon, are described in this paper. A nuclear method was developed for continuously and automatically deter-mining the moisture content of coal flowing through a bin. Fast neutrons from a 1 curie americium-beryllium source penetrate the coal, are thermalized (slowed down) by hydrogen in the moisture, and are counted by a thermal neutron detector. The difference between the number of these thermal neutrons and those thermalized by dry coal (in a reference drum) is a measure of the moisture content of the coal. A materials handling system was developed and in tests at a commercial coal preparation plant, moisture in coal was monitored continuously within 0.2 percent of values determined by conventional means. The meter responded rapidly to change in moisture content, making it adaptable to automatic process control, and was operated for 1 year without malfunction or recalibration. Shielding of the source by the coal kept the neutron flux level at the bin wall less than 1 milliroentgen per hour, a safe level for personnel.

This report summarizes the work performed on Bureau of Mines Contract J0199106, "Portable Trailing Cables, Splices, and Couplers - Design and Installation Considerations," from May 1, 1979 until December 31, 1981. Splice installations and considerations for the possible use of conductive-rubber shielding in low-voltage trailing cables as well as coupler installations in high-voltage cables were the principal tasks. Flammability measurements on cable components and general testing facilities for mine electrical equipment were secondary tasks. Theoretical and empirical data indicate that conductive rubber with high resistivity values is an unsatisfactory shield design for current-sensing fault detection. Elimination of partial discharge in coupler installations requires meticulous care.

This study provides quantitative data on vein distributions within seven selected epithermal systems, four deposits hosted predominantly in rhyolitic rocks: Ohui, Wharekirauponga, Neavesville and Komata, and three major deposits mainly hosted in andesite: Martha Hill, Golden Cross and Karangahake. The technique of fractal analysis was used to help quantify vein distribution patterns. The fractal dimensions (D) obtained are related to the number of veins per metre, the degree of vein clustering, and vein thickness. An increase in any of these tends to increase the fractal dimension.   It is the relative relationship of these parameters that is important for the characterisation of vein distributions, and the comparison of different deposits. Within the same systems, the rhyolites are characterised by lower vein thickness and vein density, but have a higher degree of vein clustering compared to the andesites. Sections that are deeper and more centrally located within the epithermal system and/or close to major structures tend to have a greater degree of vein clustering, higher average vein thickness and density, and higher thickness to density ratios. This depth control is most pronounced in epithermal gold-silver systems because they have formed at shallow crustal levels where physico-chemical conditions change drastically both vertically and laterally. In addition to lithological and structural control at vein scale, deposit scale structure is of great importance in the deposition of economic mineralisation. Large open vein structures capable of sustaining high fluxes of hydrothermal fluid, favourable for the formation of large, high-grade gold deposits, are best developed in andesite sequences.

This paper briefly reviews the adequacy of existing management theories and practices and the managerial proficiency or competency in the South African mining industry. The investigation revealed that existing management practices are totally inadequate to enable all employees on all the levels of the mining industry to achieve the results required from them, in all aspects, at all times. As a result, the South African mining industry is gradually losing its long standing reputation as a relative cheap, competitive, and reliable supplier of minerals to the local and global markets. According to some prominent management authors and theorists, an all-inclusive unified management theory does not exist at present. In this paper the authors summarize the main aspects of a newly developed comprehensive, practical, and integrated management method. It is believed that the application of this method would significantly improve the future performance and competitiveness of the South African mining industry

"Falconbridge’s Raglan Concentrator, located at the northern limit of Quebec’s Nunavik Region, has been in operation since December 1997. Originally designed to process 800,000 tonnes per year of high grade nickel ore, plant capacity is currently approaching 1,000,000 tonnes per year. Optimization of the ABC grinding circuit has proven to be the most challenging component of this capacity increase. Concurrent flotation circuit modifications have allowed concentrate grades to increase from 16 to 18 percent nickel, while maintaining recoveries. Concentrate drying problems encountered during the first 15 months of operation have been addressed through equipment upgrades. The challenges associated with surface deposition of filtered tailings in an arctic environment are now better understood, and detailed design of the progressive reclamation cover is underway.GRINDINGCircuit OverviewOre from open pit and underground mining operations is introduced to the underground ore handling system via surface and underground truck dumps. Two underground bins with a combined capacity of 4000 tonnes provide roughly a day of live capacity for ore storage. Ore from the two bins is conveyed to a 150 tonne surge bin immediately ahead of the grinding circuit in the concentrator.The Raglan grinding circuit has a conventional ABC configuration (Figure 1) with a design capacity of 100 mtph (800,000 tonnes per year). The 24’ AG mill is powered by a 3000 hp motor with variable speed drive. AG discharge is sized on a 8’x16’ single deck vibrating screen, with screen oversize recirculating to a 5 %’ short head cone crusher (400 hp) before returning to the AG mill. Screen undersize is combined with ball mill discharge to feed up to 5 15” Krebs hydrocyclones. The ball mill is a 14’x 21’ overflow mill driven by a 3000 hp motor at 73% critical speed. Target Pgo for the grinding circuit product is 65 microns"

Increased contamination due to sand in spiral feed has had a negative effect on the efficiency of spiral concentrators at Navigation Plant. The no. 1 seam at Kromdraai opencast, which was previously mined by underground bord and pillar methods, is now susceptible to spontaneous combustion because of air ingress into the old workings which are exposed in the opencast high wall. This posed a risk in the loss of reserves to burnt coal. As solutions, buffer blasting of the preceding cut to collapse bords and soft overburden dressing of un-collapsed bords were implemented to prevent air entering the workings. The latter remedy resulted in increased contamination due to addition of sand in Run of Mine. After evaluating alternatives, a low capital option was selected. The 110t/hr Teetered Bed Separator (TBS) has been installed, primarily to desand and upgrade the feed to the spiral concentrators. The unit indicated an upgrade with a yield increase of 0.4% during test work and is currently showing an overall plant yield increase of 0.97%.
