Paper presented at the IAGOD international symposium on mineralization related to mafic and ultramafic rocks held in Orleans, France, 1-3 September 1993. The principles of shear-driven aggregation of particulate matter suspended in fluids, a common industrial method of concentration and separation, were applied to a convecting magma to estimate the time required to sparge or strip the PGE and Cr content and concentrate it into the boundary layers. It was calculated that an ore-grade (e.g. 6 ppm PGE) boundary layer about 1 m thick would require 100 000 years at most to form from a body of magma 500 m deep with a PGE content of 20 ppb. Since concentration would be most vigorous when the magma was warmest, at least half of this concentration would take place in the first 10 000 years. The effect of dispersive pressure in the boundary layer would generate a concentration high of refractories just below the top of each boundary layer and another just above the bottom. If the magma was a double-diffusive system, it might evolve by the downward cascade of enriched boundary-layer material into the hotter, lower magma layers, where depending on saturation levels chromites would equilibrate and sulphides undergo partial or total resorption, enriching PGE levels in any remaining sulphides. This cascade process would in time greatly enrich the lower regions in PGE-bearing sulphides and chromites

TransCanada Pipelines, Calgary (TCPL) is one of North America's leading transporters of natural gas through its energy transmission business. TransCanada also operates significant complementary businesses in energy marketing and energy processing in North America and internationally. The main trunk pipeline crossing Canada comprises as many as six pipes, 30" to 48" diameter delivering up to 7.8 trillion cubic feet of natural gas per day. To maintain the maximum operating pressure of 1000 psi, it is necessary to provide compressor stations at 60 to 100 km spacing. One such station is located at Potter, in northern Ontario, some 80 km north of Timmins, referred to as Station 102. The station contains two compressor plants, 'A' and 'B' Each incorporates a gas turbine driven centrifugal compressor unit. 'A' Plant uses an aero-derived gas generator (jet engine) rated at 15 MW (19,000 HP).

To mitigate and control the combined sewer over-flows from 17 outfalls in Detroit, MI, three outfalls in Dearborn Heights, MI and eight outfalls in Redford Township MI, the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department (DWSD) completed the preliminary design of a storage tunnel in 2005. In 2006, a final design revised the alignments and the inside diameter (ID) of the tunnel. The revised tunnel system includes an 11.28-km (7-mile) 9.14-m (30-ft) ID tunnel, a 24.4-m (80-ft) ID pump station, two work shafts about 15.2-m (50-ft) ID each and 14 drop shafts with various IDs. A small portion of combined sanitary and storm sewers serve the majority of the Rouge Valley water-shed. This includes Detroit, MI and most of the western suburbs. The Northwest Interceptor (NWI), that extends between Eight Mile Road and Ford Road and roughly parallel to the Rouge River, intercepts sanitary sewage and some wet weather flows from trunk sewers in the tributary areas for transport to the wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) for treatment. During extreme storm events, when the capacity of the NWI is exceeded, the excess combined sewer and overflow (CSO) over-flows into the Rouge River through 17 outfalls to local rivers. The purpose of the Upper Rouge Tunnel system (URT) is to capture and significantly reduce the uncontrolled CSO from these 17 outfalls in Detroit, three outfalls in Dearborn Heights and eight outfalls in Redford Township. Liquid fuel oils possess certain advantages over solid fuels. Ease in handling, precision temperature control, and almost complete freedom from ash are among those considered when a liquid fuel is selected for use in industrial processing. In some instances these fuels are desirable because more heating units can e packed in a Given space where space is limited, as on snips. In other cases the' are chosen because of lower actual cost per British thermal unit absorbed, or for control of the flame to increase the capacity of furnaces, as in steel and refining.

This report summarizes the principal activities and significant results of the Bureau of Mines respirable dust research program since passage of the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 and the Federal Mine Safety and Health Amendments Act of 1977. This program has investigated new and improved techniques and equipment to reduce or prevent the formation of dust during the cutting cycle; to dilute, suppress, or collect airborne dust generated during mining, handling, and processing; and to improve the measurement of dust levels for evaluation of engineering controls and for enforcement of Federal dust standards. The report is intended for mining industry dust control specialists and other interested parties. It includes a brief summary of the program to date, a section on future research plans and goals, and a list of publications resulting from the Bureau's respirable dust program.

"The Goldex mining and milling complex is operated by Agnico-Eagle Mines Ltd. and is located in the Abitibi greenstone belt of Northwest Quebec, Canada. The mill operates presently at a throughput of 8,250 tpd with gold grade varying between 1.8 and 2.2 g/t. The ore is very high in gravity recoverable gold (GRG) at about 92% and as such a significant emphasis was placed on the gravity circuit. Commercial production started in 2008. Average gold recovery is 93.5% with about 68% of gold recovery coming from the gravity circuit. Over the course of the first several years of production, several gravity audits were carried out. In 2009, a complete gravity audit was completed, including ore, classification, Knelson Concentrators, and the gold room. In 2011, an audit was undertaken of the flotation circuit to determine the efficiency by which GRG is floated. Large samples of flotation feed and tails were collected and process for GRG content. This allowed a link between gravity and overall recovery to be made. This paper presents results of the audits and the development of a model linking gravity and overall gold"

An analysis method for modeling compensation grouting based on the finite element method is presented. By this method the design parameters of compensation grouting, grouting pressure and grouting volume, can be evaluated. Also the subsidence of a building due to tunnel driving as well as the lifting of the building by compensation grouting can be simulated. The stress changes in the tunnel lining and in the foundation of the building are computed as well. The application of the analysis method is demonstrated on two examples for compensation grouting in combination with construction of tunnels.

This paper presents experimental results from a study to assess the interface bond between a cast-in-place concrete seal slab and prestressed concrete piles in cofferdams. Three different seal slab placement conditions - fresh water, salt water and bentonite slurry - were evaluated and the results compared against controls where no fluid had to be displaced by the concrete. Normal pile surfaces were investigated. Additionally, the situation of ?soil caked? piles was also investigated. Both model and full-scale tests were conducted. In the model tests, twenty eight 15 cm square prestressed sections were used with the embedment depth varied between d-2d, where d is the width of the pile. In the full-scale tests, 16 specimens were tested. The prestressed piles were 36 cm square with the embedment varied between 0.5d-2d. Four of the sixteen piles were cast with embedded gages located at the top, middle and bottom of the interface region. The results showed that loads were transferred to the piles over an effective area, not the entire embedded depth. Significant bond stresses developed even for the worst placement condition. Recommendations are made for revising current values in specifications.

Triaxial compression tests at various confining pressures and temperatures, as well as tangent modulus tests using ultrasonic waves, were conducted for wax-coated granular composite materials. The material used is a surface for Thoroughbred horse racing. The purpose of these tests is to examine how track shear strength and tangent modulus at a range of loads respond to changing temperatures. Previous work has shown that a wide range of operational temperatures are experienced which have been reproduced in the lab. Using differential scanning calorimetry, it is confirmed that these operational temperatures correspond to distinct thermal transition regions for the wax that is used to coat the sand in these surfaces. Preliminary results show that both shear strength and tangent modulus are sensitive to temperature changes with maximum strength and modulus correlating with major DSC wax transition regions.

A comparison of 40 statically and dynamically load tested piles was performed to evaluate the variation between testing methods. This evaluation indicated an agreement of 10% to 15% could be obtained when the available static resistance is fully mobilized by both methods and when time dependent capacity changes are minimized. Dynamic pile testing recommendations for minimum induced impact force, ram weight to pile weight ratio, and considerations for time dependent capacity changes are presented.

Eh-pH measurements were taken on an industrial zinc reverse flotation process at Brunswick Mining and Smelting Corporation Limited. Laboratory zinc reverse flotation testwork on samples of the feed to the industrial process produced Eh-pH data which were similar to the data from the industrial process.Later, the Eh-pH data from the industrial process were compared with data from a pilot plant scale zinc reverse flotation process at Mount Isa Mines Limited. After comparison with the data from Brunswick Mining and Smelting Corporation, deficiencies in the pilot plant Eh-pH data could be recognised and corrective actions were taken for the pilot plant. A robust pilot plant zinc reverse flotation process was obtained with consistent performance at the expected level.The implications of these findings for a range of processes are also discussed.

The key to realistic casing stress analysis in thermal recovery installations is accurate knowledge of the temperatures involved. Much information leading to prediction of heat losses from tubing string to wellbore has been published. This .same information permits calculation of casing temperature under certain conditions. This paper reviews the basis for most of the published work, the line source solution to the diflusivity equation and examines some of its application criteria in the light of unsteady-state conditions. An alternate finite differences method is presented for correlation, and experimental data pertaining to the heat transfer mechanism in the annulus is reported. In the light of the information presented in the paper, it appears that the assumption of a line source for the tubing-wellbore system is valid even for reasonably short periods of heat flow, .such as "steam soak" operations. The empirically modified equation presented earlier matches computer derived results of the finite differences approach lor periods as short as 50 hours. Previously predicted cas ing temperatures and the associated stress levels are thus verified based on these correlative computations and the reported experimental information. Fall out from the computer output resulting in some studies of the influence of insulating cement properties on casing temperature, and experimentally studied effects of nitrogen placed in the annulus at various pressures., are described. INTRODUCTION Generally speaking, predictions of average casing temperatures have been based on an idealized model involving a centralized tubing string at uniform constant temperature radiating energy towards the casing under steady-state conditions.'. ' Heat is transferred away from the casing to the formation by unsteady-state conduction across thermal barriers consisting of cement and the mud sheath. Heat balances written on the casing permit prediction of instantaneous casing temperatures. During early periods of injection, casing temperature varies appreciably as a function of time; however, for long injection times this variation decays as heat flow from the wellbore to the formation stabilizes, and it becomes virtually negligible as conditions surrounding the wellbore become quasi-steady-state (Fig. 1). Carslaw and Jaeger -escribe a solution to the diffusivity equation for a line source (Fig. 2). Rehabilitation challenges were met nearly two months ahead of contract schedule for the Design-Build, Fast Track Scituate Aqueduct & Tunnel project in Cranston, Rhode Island. The aqueduct and tunnel were built in the 1920s and consisted of three sections—a 2.3 m diameter reinforced concrete section that extends approximately305 m before it transitions to a horseshoe-shaped 2.3 m wide by 2.1 m high cast-in-place concrete tunnel that continues for approximately 5.3 km until it transitions back to a 2.3 m circular section that extends approximately 1.9 km to the end of this project. Major repairs were required to assure sustained operation of this water supply tunnel.

A sub-level open stoping method is being used to mine the massive deposits at TARGET Gold Mine which uses cemented tailings to backfill the stopes. This requires the construction of bulkheads to contain the freshly placed backfill, capable of resisting the hydraulic pressure imposed by filling. The bulkheads must contain an 8 metre head of backfill slurry within 48 hours and withstand the force exerted by a 35 metre load of consolidated fill at a maximum estimated fill relative density of 1.9. After a variety of methods of construction were evaluated, it was decided to construct the bulkheads using the low density, fast-setting foamed cement-based product TEKSEAL HS manufactured by MINOVA RSA. The cement foam is contained between low-cost steel and fabric brattices which are easy to construct, using a method specially developed for the TARGET bulkheads. The paper will describe the design, trialling and construction of the bulkheads, and results obtained to date.

Introduction The porphyry copper deposit “Borska Reka” is the biggest undeveloped deposit in the Timok Magmatic Complex (TMC). Total reserve calculated manually is 611 Mt (cut-off grade 0.3% Cu) of 0.62% Cu, 0.21 g/t Au and 1.81 g/t Ag and 869 Mt of 0.58% Cu, 0.14 g/t Au and 1.11 g/t Ag using software. But since several deep drill holes are suspended in high grade (0.7% Cu) porphyry, total reserves could exceed 1Gt. The massive sulfide is also detected in the central (12 m at 4% Cu) and the bottom of porphyry style. Deposit was discovered during geologic exploration of deeper part of the Bor copper and gold deposit, i.e. area of high sulfidation with dominant massive sulfides. During exploitation of massive sulfide, constant explorations were carried out aimed at the expansion of reserve and discovery of new ore bodies. In that way, porphyry copper mineralization was discovered without knowing in the beginning that it was different mineralization type in regard to the ones that had been already identified and exploited. Vertical extension of porphyry is 0 m up to -1000 m sea level and not contoured along plunge. In the very beginning (1976), the exploration was focused on the shallow part of porphyry. That is because block caving method of massive underground mining was not developed at that time. Up to 1999, most of activity was related to underground exploration up to level -395 m. Geographic position The Bor deposit is located close to the industrial and University town Bor, which has over 50,000 inhabitants (census made in the year 2002). Apart from the Bor Mines, industrial complex of Mining & Smelting Basin Bor (RTB) comprises also a copper smelter (installed capacity up to 160,000 tons of blister copper) and tank house, copper wire factory, copper tube factory etc. Currently, RTB Bor is under privatization process that is going to be completed by the end of 2006. Up to date, over 20 companies have bought tender documentation.

"In a preliminary report made a year ago it was shown that certain minerals when subjected to heating with water under high pressure and temperature were shattered upon the sudden release of that pressure. The main feature in which the results of this method differ from those of conventional grinding is in the differential effect obtained. The more metallic minerals, and hence the valuable minerals, are shattered more readily than are the gangue minerals. In other words, explosive shattering is unique among possible methods for comminuting an ore in that it wastes the least energy on the useless part of the ore. Explosive shattering, therefore, offers possibilities as a means for reducing grinding costs, arid it is this potential advantage of the process that makes it worthy of further experimental study. The first part of this paper is devoted to a study of the mechanism of the process; the, second part reports results obtained in toots on a selected list of ores to exhibit some of the advantages of explosive shattering."

The Federal Bureau of Mines conducted a study to determine if residues from fractional distillation represent a potential source of mineral values. A literature review and discussions with tar sand specialists failed to disclose the mineralogical nature of residues remaining after bitumen extraction. To develop this information, pilot plant tar sand residues or toluene-cleaned tar sands from 23 deposits were examined. The nature of the residues was determined by standard mineralogical methods and the chemical compositions were determined by X-ray and ICP (inductively-coupled plasma spectroscopy). None of the sands or concentrates examined contained sufficient valuable minerals to be economically important.
