Through whole analysis of static testing piles information of a teaching building, this paper put for ward that when the ratioes of unload rebound amount to residual deformation and to total settlement reach the maximum, the testing load is selected as allowable capacity of single pile by camparing with the settlement in the practical engineering, it is proved that this method fits to practice, for other several projects, its also available. Therefore non-destructive testing pile method was improved, so all the tested piles can be reused as engineering piles.

U.S. Minerals Coordinating Council Advised. -The Critical Materials Act of 1981, H. R. 4281, introduced on July 27, would create a Council on Critical Materials in the White House Executive Office to oversee Federal materials programs involving $1 billion committed to research by 14 agencies, and to serve as the President's focal point to evaluate materials policy. It was introduced by Congressman Fuqua (D-Fla.) whose Committee on Science and Technology has over-sight over the implementation of P. L. 96-479, the National Materials and Minerals Policy, Research and Development Act of 1980. Bulgaria's Mineral Bank. -Recently Bulgaria established a mineral bank to facilitate receipt of foreign credits for exploiting Bulgaria's mineral raw materials. The bank has wide powers to enter into business arrangements with foreign creditors. Bulgaria's main interest in trading with the West is to import the technology for developing energy and mineral resources.

Mining One (M1) is often challenged with the task of evaluating deposits considering open cut and/or underground (UG) mining methods. In many near surface deposits a combination of both methods results in the optimum economic means of exploitation. As common as it is to have open pit mines eventually develop into underground mines, theory associated with determining the optimum underground/open pit interface location continues to be subject to refinement. With recent developments in underground software packages, the generation of rudimentary underground mining stopes from basic economic inputs is not only fast, it provides a practical underground mining solution. The determination of the open pit/underground interface is not new to Gemcom's Whittle 4X (Whittle). However, its solution has only ever claimed to be indicative, mainly due the rudimentary nature of how Whittle represents any potential underground mining. The efficient generation of the aforementioned underground mining solution has provided mining engineers with a unique opportunity. Underground mining can now be represented within the Whittle environment to allow the open pit/underground mining scenario to be modelled with increased accuracy. Providing Whittle with the ability to now consider mineable underground stopes combined with the consideration of time value of money (discounting), has delivered a solution with higher credibility than ever before.This paper will elaborate on the potential value gains associated with improved accuracies in the modelling of any potential underground mining in the Whittle environment. Furthermore, it will explain the importance of incorporating time value of money in the optimisation process to provide a consistent solution through to pit selection and final analysis.

This chapter summarizes data on crude nonfuel mineral production for the United States, its island possessions, and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rim. Also included are tables that show the principal nonfuel mineral commodities exported from and imported into the United States and that compare world and U.S. mineral production. The detailed data from which these tables were derived are contained in the individual commodity chapters of Volume I and in the State chapters of Volume II of this edition of the Minerals Yearbook. Although crude mineral production may be measured at any of several stages of extraction and processing, the stage of measurement used in this chapter is what is normally termed "mine output." It usually refers to minerals or ores in the form in which they are first extracted from the ground, but customarily includes the output from auxiliary processing at or near the mines.

Part of the PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) mine production is in the process of transitioning from the deep ore zone (DOZ) mine to the deep mill level zone (DMLZ) mine. The DMLZ mine is the next lift in the caving series and lies 500 m below the current DOZ footprint.In order to reduce the need for a very expensive additional ventilation system for the DMLZ mine, it was decided to reconfigure some infrastructure and upgrade the performance of the three existing DOZ mixed flow ventilation fans in situ, reducing the new fans required to two. This was far less costly than providing complete new installations.These fans are installed in individual underground chambers in DOZ mine exhaust drifts and connected to the DMLZ mine exhaust drifts system in 7 m × 7 m airways size, through sets of 6 m diameter by 500 m high raises.The upgrade process involved replacement of motors, fan shafts and bearings. The existing 1600 kW DOZ mixed flow fans are 3500 mm diameter and operate at a speed of 595 rev/min and were originally designed to deliver 390 m3/s at 3.3 kPa. Efficiency optimisation may be required at a later date.The upgraded DMLZ fans are required to deliver 425 m3/s at 3.7 kPa and it was necessary to increase in motor size and speed to 2200 kW at 710 rev/min. The Bureau of Mines has participated in the American Petroleum Institute Research Project 48A (API-RP48A) program on the Separation and Identification of Sulfur Compounds in Crude Petroleum. The lack of reference compounds or infrared spectral data has made difficult the identification of individual sulfur compounds boiling above 140° C. The recent acquisition of 24 alkylthiophnnes has made possible a limited study of this important class of sulfur compounds. The infrared spectra of 2-monoalkylthiophenes and 2,5-dialkylthiophenes for the 2 to 15p range are reported. Correlations for determining the 2-alkyl and 2,5-dialkyl substituted thiophenes are derived from this information. The 2-alkylthiophenes show a unique pattern in the 5.50 to 6.54 region, while the 2,5-dialkylthiophenes show a distinctive pattern in the 5.6µ to 6.7µ region. A skeletal vibration occurs in the 9.5 to 10.0µ region for all of the thiophenes investigated. These data will aid the infrared spectroscopist in the identification of compounds of the type reported.

This report is the 26th in a series summarizing Bureau of Mines research and technologic work on coal and related investigations and the 8th of these reports to be issued on a calendar-year basis.1 It reviews briefly work in progress during 1961, and it provides references to publications by Bureau personnel during 1961 and also to a few older papers that were not cited in prior reports of this series. Details about some of the researches mentioned may be obtained by referring to the publications cited in the footnotes or in the further list in the Bibliography; other phases of work are reported here for the first time and will be covered in more detail by later publications. The coal program of the Bureau of Mines extends over the wide range of applied and theoretical studies indicated by the table of contents of this report. Applied studies are conducted in connection with the development and evaluation of new mining techniques, and the effective processing and utilization of coal and coal products. A new analytical formula for predicting ground vibrations induced by blasting is proposed. One factor accounts for geometrical spreading. One factor corresponds to inelastic attenuation. The geometrical spreading function is based on likely source geometries, idealized as either square-root, cube-root or site-specific scaling, and on the propagation characteristics of predominant wave types. The inelastic attenuation is approximated by an exponential function. The empirical constants in these functions are backcalculated from field measurements. Regression analysis has been performed on twenty-three sets of measured data in order to determine the validity and the effectiveness of the proposed method. In many cases, the proposed method gives better correlation than the conventional method. In most of the remaining cases, there was no difference between the two methods. Best-fit lines given by the proposed method fit the data trend very well, especially at large scaled distances. At large distances the proposed method gives a prediction much closer to the actual values than the conventional methods. The statistical analysis shows not much difference between square-root, cube-root or site-specific scalings.

How to monitor and control the support and surrounding strata system on a longwall face effectively is one of the major research problems in ground control. Based on observations on movements of the support and surrounding strata of face No. 2703 of Dongpang colliery, the relationship between the downtime related to support and surrounding strata and other influential factors is analysed systematically in this paper. Monitoring indices and control measures are then determined by taking corresponding downtime as an objective function. When the monitoring method, developed from the above findings, was used on face No. 2703, the downtime due to support and surrounding strata was remarkably reduced, and the face advanced normally.

Coal mining has evolved into extensive use of continuous mining machines for development and production. This has resulted in an increase in dependence on the versatile continuous miners. The present-day continuous miners are powerful in terms of rated power but are still plagued by wear of bits which hinders development and production as the bits have to be continuously changed at regular intervals. Previous attempts to analyze bit wear has been either restricted to the theoretical approach and or laboratory testing. This paper discusses about the overall aspect of bit and drum design for different conditions. Using the laboratory model set up, numerical models and field testing, a new bit and drum design was analyzed to evaluate their performance under different conditions. The results proved that a newer bit design and drum design were successful in limiting the amount of wear as well as improving the performance of the continuous miner and production.

Devitrification of a glassy volcanic ash equivalent to an alkaline trachyte in composition has resulted in the formation of an interstratified illite-montmorillonite with an 1:1\1 content of 1:4 as the principal clay mineral.A high concentration of potassium ions and a deficiency of magnesium ions favoured the formation of the potassium-bentonite.A poorly ordered mica mineral, equivalent to illite, was produced by weathering of potassic feldspar. Subsequent degradation of the illite through the loss of potassium was responsible for the formation of several interstratified minerals with very approximate 1:1\1 contents of 4: I as minor components.Other authigenic minerals present in small amounts were u-cristobalite, sepiolite, and the zeolite clinopitolite.The non-swelling character of the potassium-bentonite makes it economically unattractive...

The beneficiation of heavy metal oxides, such as iron ore, is usually performed with heavy medium separation in cyclones, static baths and lately with Larcodems. Atomized ferrosilicon is most suitable as a heavy medium at densities above 3600 kg/m3 whereas a mixture of milled and atomized ferrosilicon is suitable at densities below 3600 kg/m3. When operating a beneficiation plant at densities higher than 3600 kg/m3 the quality of the ferrosilicon particles is an important factor that influences the control of the beneficiation process. Therefore, it is important to know how the rheology would be affected by the ferrosilicon quality as it also influences the control of the process at these elevated densities. Background The Kumba Resources Sishen Iron Ore Mine in South Africa produces 26.5 Mt iron ore per annum from its beneficiation plant. The ore body consists mainly of laminated and massive type hematite ore that is crushed down to ?90mm before being beneficiated by means of a combination of Wemco drums, Larcodem and dense medium cyclone separators. The need for higher densities When the percentage of high-density gangue2 is higher than normal in the run-of-mine (ROM), a higher separation density is necessary to produce a product to specification. Certain ore types of this quality in the Sishen reserves require a separating density higher than 4000 kg/m3, whereas densities would normally average 3600 kg/m3 when beneficiating ores of normal high-density gangue content. Sink and float tests conducted on the ROM material at Sishen revealed some interesting characteristics. In the waste fraction, (density < 3600 kg/m3) it was found that the %Fe was <21% (Fig. 1). Similarly, for the product fraction (density >3000 kg/m3), the percentage Fe varied between 35% and 67.2%. The bulk of the material (88%) actually had a density greater than 4000 kg/m3 and a Fe content that varied between 63% and 67.2%. At a density interval of 3600 to 4000 kg/m3, the Fe content varied from 37% to 60% with an average of 45%.

This report examines practical considerations in longwall support selection that have evolved from Bureau of Mines ground control research. The scope of discussion includes trends in support selection, analysis of shield designs, performance testing, and an examination of support and strata interaction theories and their relevance to in situ support loading. Application recommendations are made for two-leg shields. four-leg shields, and chock-shields. Two-leg shields account for 67 pct of the current active longwall installations and are used in a variety of applications. Automated control systems are likely to continue to grow in utilization. The next major change in shield design is likely to be the application of wider supports. The most effective method of performance testing longwall shields is by controlled displacement of the canopy relative to the base. Controlled force application does not control the load transfer through the shield and may not produce maximum loading in all support components. Theories of estimating support capacity based upon a detached roof block that must be maintained in equilibrium by the powered support are being challenged by concepts based upon the equivalent stiffness of the total ground supporting system.

Whilst spontaneous combustion has never been considered a major problem in south Durham, certain collieries in the area have a history of heatings and precautions are essential. Three collieries are affected - Shotton, Vane Tempest and Seaham - and in the case of the last two, there are huge areas of high quality coal to work under conditions where spontaneous combustion is a real hazard. The seam being extracted has an immediate roof in goaf left by the incomplete extraction of a contiguous seam worked before the turn of the century. The presence of residual coal stocks and old roadways and cavities adds to the difficulty of preventing unwanted air movement. The main preventive measures adopted are the construction of airtight gateside packs and the use of sprayed surface coatings in the gate. Sampling systems and sampling points are described and, in particular the field of continuous monitoring from the surface is examined. The resulting possibility of a quantitative as well as qualitative assessment of the preventative measures required is discussed.

In-situ measurements of ground stress were made from surface boreholes, using overcoring and hydrofracturing techniques, to obtain data for the detailed design of the underground works at Pergau. Unexpectedly low stresses were measured and appeared to correlate with apparent hydrofracturing observed during permeability testing. The low values of the minor principal stress had a major impact on design, particularly of the lining for the pressure tunnel and shaft. Additional hydrofracture tests were made underground during construction of the low- and high-pressure headrace tunnels and the pressure shaft, to define the vertical reduction in the minor principal stress with overburden. These data were then used to locate and design the steel and reinforced concrete linings

All large-scale applications of conditional simulations intend to benefit from the ‘correct’ (or’ accurate’) characterization of uncertainty, adequately describing the variability observed from the data and its impact on the final objective. This paper discusses a number of relevant issues that highlight the extent to which, in reality, a model of uncertainty is dependent on the random function model chosen. Often in the presence of large number of conditioning data most available random function models will provide similar models of uncertainty. When conditioning is scarce, the resulting models of uncertainty will vary more widely, since the final output will depend mostly on the underlying assumptions of the model chosen. The application described in this paper is taken from a large porphyry Cu operation in northern Chile, and it demonstrates the impact of several variables on the resulting models of uncertainty. In particular, some of the decisions involved include the number of conditioning data and the underlying Random Function model used (Gaussian or indicator-based). Also, implementation-specific parameters must be decided upon, such as grid size used, random number generator, simple or ordinary kriging, multiple-grid simulation, and simulation of irregular three-dimensional bodies (as opposed to regular grids). Some practical guidelines are proposed to deal with these decisions.

A procedure, which can be performed in the field by nonanalytical personnel, is given for sensitive spot tests for detecting tellurium or selenium. The expressed need of a field test for detecting small amounts of tellurium, which may be accompanied by relatively large amounts of selenium, has led to the development of this method. Tellurium search has been impeded by the lack of a satisfactory test from the standpoint of sensitivity and specificity. A quantitative laboratory method exists, but it is expensive and relatively laborious. Several other qualitative tests are known, but they require unstable solutions, which must be freshly prepared for use, and a greater variety of laboratory equipment. The particular advantages of the test described are its simplicity and the stability of the reagents required, there-fore is is well adapted for field use. Also, this test was found to be of practical use in the analytical laboratory when screening samples, thereby reducing analytical costs. The roughly quantitative interpretation of the results can save time by indicating the approximate size of the sample taken for a quantitative determination.
