Mineral production was of little significance in the country's economy, and Bangladesh was not a world-ranked producer of any mineral commodity during 1977. Natural gas was the most important mineral exploited; however, reserves were sufficient to allow for much greater production, Economically, Bangladesh made some progress in 1977-782 in its struggle against poverty, underdevelopment, and rapidly increasing population. The gross domestic product (GDP) grew 8%, mainly owing to a 13% increase in food grain production, the key economic indicator in this highly agricultural nation. GDP at current prices dropped slightly in Fiscal Year (FY) 1976.77 to $6.6 billion3 and rose to $7.2 billion in FY 1977.78. The population rose from 81 million in FY 1975-76 to about 85 million in FY 1977-78, resulting in an increase of per capita GDP from $83 to $85 during the same period. The high annual population growth rate, over 3% in 1976 and about 2.8% in 1977, was recognized by the Government as the main problem facing the country. Average density was 525 people per square kilometer. A similar density would have the entire world population living within the continental United States.

The accurate prediction of the shaft capacity of drives piles in sand continues to present problems for foundation designers. Research in this field has been carried out for many years and has yielded a wide range of design approaches -some of which have been shown by recent experimental work to be based on questionable assumptions. This Paper reviews some of the current popular design methods for piles in sand in the context of recent information obtained from high quality field tests conducted by institutions such as Imperial College London. A database of driven piles in cohesionless soils has been compiled from well documented (and reliable) case histories that have been reported in the literature. The measured shaft capacities of the piles in this database are compared with predictions made by the various methods and an assessment is made of the predictive performance and reliability of each method

The Bureau of Mines is developing methods for reclaiming the metal and mineral values contained in municipal incinerator residues. This report describes the first phase of the research, in which reliable methods for sampling and analyzing municipal residues were established and the composition and characteristics of the residues were determined. Samples were obtained from a variety of grate-type furnaces and also from a rotary kiln furnace. The samples were processed on a batch basis and separated into their natural categories by a variety of methods including screening, magnetic separation, air separation techniques, and handpicking. The main components of the residues were determined to be metal and metal oxides, glass, and ash.

The quartz-cassiterite-wolfram veins at the Aberfoyle Tin Mine, north-eastern Tasmania, form a sheeted zone about 200 ft. wide and 1,600 ft. long in slightly contact metamorphosed shales, slates and greywackes, and are associated with a cupola of aplitic granite whose top is about 1,050 ft. below the present surface. Economic mineralization persists from the surface down to a vertical depth of 1,050 ft. to 1,100 ft., dying away in the vicinity of the cupola. Down to the 9-level there is a progressive increase in wolfram content of the veins, and a decline in cassiterite content, with increasing depth.The veins are banded or zoned, with a seivedge of muscovite on the wall. Cassiterite, wolfram and sphalerite occur inside the selvedges, projecting into a core of quartz of varying width. Other sulphides form the central part of some narrow veins, or occur as clots in the quartz. The general sequence of deposition of the ore minerals was: (1) cassiterite, wolfram; (2) arsenopyrite, pyrite, molybdenite; (3) pyrrhotite (in part); (4) blende-group minerals-chalcopyrite, sphalerite, stannite, pyrrhotite (in part)-as solid solutions; (5) galena, tetrahedrite, matildite, native bismuth, scheelite; (6) marcasite and secondary pyrite, magnetite and hematite. The sequence of deposition of the gangue minerals was: (1) fluorine-bearing minerals-muscovite topaz, apatite, triplite, fluorite-more or less contemporaneous with the cassiterite and wolfram;' (2) quartz-contemporaneous with the earlier sulphides; (3) carbonates--contemporaneous with the later sulphides. The stages overlapped somewhat.The composition of the sphalerite and heat treatment experiments with the solid solutions indicate that the blende-group sulphides were deposited at about 6000 C., and cooled rapidly, so that unmixing of the solid solutions was arrested. This accords with the likelihood that the country rock temperature was not above 2000 C. Annealing experiments at between 3500 C. and 6000 C. led to further precipitation from solid solution at the lower temperatures, and to significant segregation by solid diffusion within, a week, indicating that both deposition and cooling of the ore were rapid processes-completed in a matter of days. "SynopsisRock mass classification systems constitute an integral part of empirical underground excavation design. One system that is commonly used to classify rock mass is the Rock Mass Rating, or RMR, system. The RMR system has evolved over time to better reflect the perceived influence of various rock mass factors on excavation stability. While the introduced modifications have enhanced the applicability of this classification system, there are still areas that cause potential ambiguity. The RMR system cannot deal with input data ambiguities, uncertainties, and vagueness. To deal with the uncertainty, a Fuzzy Rock Mass Rating (FRMR) has been developed. This study aims to describe the main concept of the fuzzy approach, which is implemented in the FRMR to classify rock mass. The FRMR considers the uncertainty associated with the input data (uncertain variables) used in rock mass classification. The Gol-e-Gohar (GEG) area 3 iron ore deposits in the south of Iran were chosen as the case study for investigating the applicability of FRMR. The results of this study show that the FRMR software tool can easily be used for rock mass classification, even if uncertain input parameters have been used. FRMR consists of three parts, each of which is suitable for certain conditions.IntroductionNowadays, rock engineering classification systems, which constitute the backbone of the empirical design approach, are widely employed in both civil engineering and mining engineering. Rock mass classifications have recently been quite popular and are being used mostly for the preliminary design and planning purposes of projects. According to Bieniawski (1989), a rock mass classification scheme is intended to classify the rock masses, provide a basis for estimating deformation and strength properties, supply quantitative data for support estimation, and present a platform for communication between the exploration, design, and construction groups."

The combined 75th Annual Minnesota Section of SME meeting and 63rd Annual University of Minnesota Mining Symposium was held April 9 and 10, 2002, in Duluth, MN. This year’s theme was “Keys to the Future: Imagination, Innovation and Technology.” The meeting consisted of plenary and technical sessions and a special General Manager’s Session. The technical paper presentations included concurrent mining and mineral processing sessions. In the General Manager’s Session, representatives from the region’s taconite operations presented the current status, concerns and future plans for each of their operations.

Nickel containing less than 0.01 percent of total metallic impurities was produced at the Rolla Metallurgy Research Center of the Bureau of Mines by electrodeposition from purified electrolytes. The first report on this research4 described purification of electrolytes by selective precipitation and by liquid-liquid extraction. This second report describes a procedure: or electrodepositing high-purity nickel from electrolytes purified by passing a nickel ammine solution through a column of an ion exchange resin. The nickel electroplated directly from the ammine solution without further treatment; a titanium cathode and two platinum anodes were used. The nickel deposit was dense, smooth, and adherent, and contained less than 0.001 percent each of cobalt, copper, and iron, and spectrographically detectable traces of aluminum, magnesium, and silicon. Nonmetallic impurities in the nickel metal were carbon and sulfur, each present in concentrations of less than 0.01 percent. The results of several experiments planned to purify solid nickel salts by zone refining are also reported. These salts, after purification, were intended for use in preparing electrolytes for deposition of high-purity nickel. Results were not encouraging so that the more promising ion exchange procedure was emphasized chiefly.

The Missouri lead ores are the only domestic sources of cobalt presently being mined and processed for other materials. They represent the best short-term solution for meeting up to 13 pct of the Nation's strategic and critical cobalt needs from domestic sources. Presently, the cobalt is lost as an impurity in the copper, lead, and zinc concentrates and in the mill tailings because the technology to recover it with minium impact on present production does not exist. This paper presents results of research, built upon earlier Bureau of Mines laboratory research, to enumerate the problems encountered in cobalt recovery from the copper concentrate under actual mill conditions; to present alternative solutions to these problems; and finally, to describe the best available technology for cobalt recovery within the imposed constraints. Mineralogical analyses showed the cobalt present as a distinct mineral phase, predominately siegenite, amenable to a physical separation method such as froth flotation. Flotation was chosen for recovery because of easy adaptation by the mills. Unit processes of grinding, conditioning, and flotation were studied individually and in concert, and a series of continuous tests were run based on the parameters developed to obtain engineering data for subsequent economic analysis. Overall cobalt grades of 3.00 wt pct at a recovery of 64.0 pct were achieved.

Increased mechanization .of coal mines has emphasized the need for study of actual power requirements of the various machines employed in the production of coal and losses in the distribution of power to these machines. These studies are being made in order that hazards, excessive use of power, and high maintenance cost of equipment resulting from these losses may be analyzed and eliminated where possible. Research on the use of electric power in-coal mines was suggested by the Advisory Committee of the Bureau of Mines in 1937, and it was decided to begin with a study of individual machines of various types under operating conditions in modern coal mines. The transmission of power, particularly line losses and inadequate return circuits, should be a part of the investigation. This report presents some of the data of an initial study in commercial mines. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS The superintendents, engineers, and other officials of the two mines studied cooperated fully and aided in setting up and transporting the test equipment, giving such information as was requested.

"A full-scale prototype of “Jameson Downcomer” technology has been installed and tested on a Tailings Oil Recovery (TOR) vessel in Syncrude’s Mildred Lake extraction plant. Jameson Downcomers are a type of mineral flotation equipment used in the coal industry that Syncrude has extended to the recovery of secondary bitumen in the oil sand extraction process. The TOR vessels are currently being operated as single-gravity separation vessels, in series with the Primary Separation Vessels (PSV’s). We have developed a model to differentiate between “floating” and “non-floating” bitumen in the PSV’s, and then applied it to verify that the current TOR performance only captures the “floating” bitumen by simple separation. The existence of “non-floating” bitumen provides an opportunity for recovery enhancement by means of the Jameson Downcomers. To achieve bitumen recovery enhancement, middlings slurry is withdrawn from the TOR vessel, and passed through a number of parallel Jameson downcomers, within which the slurry is accelerated to a high-velocity free jet, and impinged upon the slurry surface inside the downcomer, in the presence of air. The aerated slurry is returned to the middlings zone inside the TOR, resulting in an incremental recovery improvement of bitumen in the TOR. The operation of the downcomers is thought to produce suitably small air bubbles for the flotation of bitumen, either by fluid shearing during the slurry jet impingement, and/or by micro-bubble nucleation. This full-scale prototype design has met or exceeded the recovery expectations of the original Research piloting, recovering at least 40% of the non-floating bitumen. In Syncrude Extraction, this provides high business value by a separation efficiency gain achieved with modest expenditure. As well, the system has demonstrated excellent operability and maintainability.INTRODUCTION Syncrude Overview Syncrude Canada Ltd. is one of the largest producers of crude oil from oil sands. Our crude oil production facility has the capacity to produce over 15% of Canada's total oil requirements. To do this, we surface mine oil sand, extract the raw oil known as bitumen from the sand using water-based processes, and upgrade that bitumen into sweet light crude oil by fluid coking, hydro processing, hydro treating and reblending. Our final product, Syncrude Crude Oil (SCO), is sent by pipeline to three Edmonton area refineries and to pipeline terminals which ship it to other refineries in Canada and the United States. The Syncrude operation is comprised of four major technology areas: Mining, Extraction, Upgrading and Utilities. As well, Syncrude invests more than $40 million annually in science and technology, and is among the top 50 companies in Canada for Research and Development (R&D) investment. "A 28-year study of cross folds leads to the conclusion that the northwest-southeast folds recognized in many areas of North America are part of a regional pattern. Detailed examination of over 650 geological maps and reports of Ontario indicates that this folding can be traced across the province. Evidence is presented that this fold pattern played an important part in determining the pattern and scale of intrusion, that its recognition in the field can aid in defining stratigraphy, folding and faulting, and that it may have played an important role in channeling hydrothermal or magmatic mineralization. IntroductionThe concept of regional cross folding in Ontario is not new. W.H. Gross (1955) discussed regional cross folds in the Archean of Northwestern Ontario, and A.M. Goodwin (1961) referred to regional cross folds in the Archean of Ontario and Quebec. However, the interpretation in this paper is new.The writer saw a cross fold for the first time, underground, at Little Long Lac Gold Mines in Geraldton, Ontario, in 1951. This recalled the ""transverse folds"" on E.R. Faribault's classical maps of Nova Scotia, published by the Geological Survey around the turn of the century; M.E. Hurst's cross fold(s) at Timmins, Ontario (Figure I); and the cross folds mapped by A.W. Jolliffe in the Yellowknife area of the Northwest Territories. All these mapped cross folds had one thing in common with the fold at Little Long Lac: A northwest-southeast axial trend. Were such cross folds of purely local extent, or might they be indicative of a widespread regional fold pattern? If so, has such folding any significance for mineral exploration or potential?By 1959, based on a study of about 1000 Canadian geological maps and reports, including 291 in Ontario, the writer reached the conclusion that cross folding trending northwest-southeast is so widespread as to constitute a pattern of folding, and that such cross folding should produce changes in plunge along pre-existing greenstone fold belts."

The mining industry of the United States has for many years possessed the dubious aistinction of having the poorest accident rate of all of the major lines of industrial endeavor in this country, and until recently there ras little or nothing to show that any material improvement might be expected. However, there are now numerous trends indicating that the corner has ceen turned at last, and it is strongly hoped that the mining industry is likely to follow the railroads, the cement and other industries in operating with occurrence of only a reasonable amount of loss of life and limb through accidents. The complete accident figures for metal and nonmetallic mineral mining for 1931 are not yet available, but fragmentary data shor that 1831 vill un- questionably have very low accident rates, probably the lowest in the history of our metal mines. One underground metal mine has produced over 14,000,000 tons of copper ore rithout a fatality; another metal mining company with an electric slovel operation has handled upwards of 75,000,000 tons of material, copper ore and waste, without the occurrence of a fatality; an iron-ore compan, which orns six mines (three underground, three open pit), has operated every one for a year or more without a lost-time accident with a con- siderable number of employees and a large production; and alot.er iron-ore producer with 30 mines and about 3,000 employees as an average of nearly 10 months of operation in 1931 without a lost-time accident. umerous other wonderful safety records of metal mines in 1931 indicate unmistaimbly tat the record of the noncoal mining industry of the United States as a role in 1931 will undoubtedly be found to be excellent. Longwall-induced deformations could jeopardize the mechanical integrity of shale gas well casings positioned in the abutment pillar of a longwall mine. The in situ and induced fracture networks surrounding the gas well could provide pathways for gas flow into the mine creating safety concerns. Hence, this study by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) develops a discrete fracture network (DFN) model to characterize the fractures in the overburden based on geomechanical analyses of mining-induced fracture apertures at a study site in southwestern Pennsylvania. The apertures from the geomechanical model are used to develop a stochastic DFN model of the site in fracture flow code (FFC). Multiple realizations of the stochastic DFN model that replicate potential fracture geometries are simulated, and the fracture permeability is compared with field measurements. A maximum field measurement of 5.03 × 10− 12 m2 (5080 mD) and 3.82 × 10− 13 m2 (386 mD) was estimated over the abutment pillar at the Sewickley and Uniontown horizon, respectively. The results show that the average permeabilities from the DFN model agree closely with the field measurements. In addition, the comparison of all the field measurements and 100 DFN realizations show the model is representative of field conditions. These findings provide critical information regarding fracture characteristics in the overburden, which will further be used to predict potential shale gas flow to the mine in the event of a casing breach for an unconventional gas well.

A series of performance studies have been conducted using counter-current column flotation to recover a marketable clean coal product from existing preparation plant fine waste streams. The test work was conducted at several preparation plant sites in Kentucky and Virginia and utilized a 0.15m (6 in.) I.D. column that was 5.79m (19 ft.) high. The refuse streams tested included both thickener feed and classifying cyclone overflow with a typical size distribution of 100 mesh X O. The percent solids of the column flotation feed varied from 1.5 to 15% while the ash content ranged from 30-60%. The concentrates produced contained 2-10% ash with BTU recoveries of nearly 90% using 0.12-1.25 kg/ton (0.25-2.5 lbs/ton) fuel oil and 0.12 kg/ton (0.25 lb/ton) MIBC. These results were consistent with or better than results obtained in preliminary laboratory scale column flotation evaluation. Test results from 7 different seams are discussed as well as scale-up relationships utilized to design a full scale installation presently in operation.

The objective of this five year study was to investigate the means of establishing non-polluted ground-water and root zone systems in areas where surface mining intercepts physiochemically unsuitable overburden materials. Overburden may need to be sampled on a 60 m grid in order to delineate materials unsuitable for reclamation and to accurately implement selective handling operations. Unsuitable overburden materials were buried successfully in a dragline operation with a minimum of delays, but costs were increased 12 to 53%. After three years the buried material remains above the reestablished aquifer and below the root zone. Construction of a clay cap over the buried material may not be required in semiarid environments. It was shown that some unsuitable overburden materials do not have to be special handled. When inhibitory material constituted <5% of the total overburden volume, such material was essentially not detectable in the resultant spoil pile due to mixing/dilution processes. When inhibitory material exceeded 15% of the overburden volume it was always found in the resultant spoil pile, generally with a smaller extent, indicating partial dilution. At least a portion of the postmine aquifer had hydraulic conductivity rates lower than the premine system, indicating the reestablished aquifer may, in part, conduct ground water very slowly. Postmine ground-water chemical quality in spoil materials had poorer quality compared to premine ground water.

The deposit has been exploited for Mn oxide and carbonate since 1916. Known reserves of MnO, however, are almost depleted and the survival of the mine will depend on the exploitation of the carbonate. Kriging, inverse distance weighting (IDW) and cross-sectional methods have been applied to the evaluation of the carbonate resources and reconciliation of the estimates obtained shows that kriging and IDW give almost identical block values. A comparison using conditional probability indicates that there is virtually no difference between the global reserve estimates derived from the cross-sectional and kriging methods. The physical causes of these similarities are highlighted and the problems of dealing with multimodal distributions are discussed together with the difficulties of semi-variogram modelling

"BACKGROUND Strata mechanics of three underground coal mines in central Utah were recently studied using a specialized finite element technique [1, 2, 3, 4]. The purpose of these studies was to examine relationships between mining and related seismicity. The longwall mining method was predominant, but room and pillar mining and barrier pillar mining were also used in the mines studied. In every case, high correlation between face advance and seismicity was observed. The specialized finite element technique allows for whole mine subsidence estimation at a kilometer scale and for stress concentration at a meter scale near a working face. Comparisons of observed mine subsidence with model subsidence allows for model verification and justifies detailed analysis of the evolution of stress at seam level. Yielding is expected near a longwall panel face and as the face is advanced the extent of yielding is expected to increase. The total number of element failures in a finite element mine model also increases, so a high correlation with associated seismicity, say, event count, is not so surprising. A brief review of recent coal mine studies in Utah is presented in the sequel. The procedures are given in some detail in application to trona mining. COAL MINES The analysis procedure begins with the geologic column and proceeds to specification of strata properties including elastic moduli and strengths. Joints are an integral part of the geologic model and joint set specifications include dip direction, dip, spacing, stiffness and strength. Spatial variability of strata properties in situ may be taken into account during analysis. Topography is important, especially to Utah coal mines that are developed from outcrop in regions of high relief. Mesh generation follows specification of data input. Finite element analysis is next, followed by reporting of results. In this regard, all finite element computations are based on first principles. No model “calibration” is done that involves adjusting computer input to obtain a fit to mine measurements such as subsidence profiles. Figure 1 illustrates the concept of a dual node – dual mesh finite element concept. Dual nodes are roof and floor nodes in mined areas. These nodes replace the seam. The dual mesh is a much refined mesh with displacement boundary conditions obtained from the big mesh and thus replaces the effect of mining in the region outside the dual mesh. The refined dual mesh allows for details of stress, strain and displacement near a working face of interest. Strata Properties Strata properties include elastic moduli and strengths of intact rock between joints and joint stiffness and strength for each joint set present. Both properties sets may be obtained from laboratory test data, although testing joints poses a sampling problem in the field. The statistical variability observed in laboratory test data, say, in unconfined compressive strength tests is often characterized by much variation. In fact, the coefficient of variation, ratio of standard deviation to mean, is often greater than 35 percent. When sample values are mapped back to the mine location, one may observe spatial variability as properties vary from place to place as shown in Figure 2. Spatial variability may be incorporated into a finite element analysis with probabilistic assignment of properties to elements in accordance with measured variability. The result is a more realistic model of rock in situ."

Drifts are an integral component of underground mining. They provide access for men and material, means for transporting ore and rock and serve as air passageways. In view of their importance on the overall safety, economy and productivity of mines, empirical guidelines for controlled blasting design in drifts have been developed in this study. The application of the proposed concept was described by generating blast hole patterns for a mine with the help of a computer program. The mechanism of blast damage and the need for controlled blasting to alleviate ground control problems in underground mines have been outlined in this paper. The economic analysis between normal-and controlled blasting was performed based on the information from an operating mine. In addition, the review of drift blasting practices and problems in Canadian mines was also carried out in this study.

Preliminary examination of the Virgin River manganese deposit was made by C. H. Johnson, Bureau of Mines engineer, in March 1941. During, April and May 8 trenches were dug, a 48-foot inclined shaft was sunk, and 719 linear feet of channel samples were cut. McKelvey and Wiese, of the Federal Geological Survey, completed mapping the deposit, including the entire area of overlying formations comprising the point of land between the outcrop and Lake Mead. The geologic maps, maps, and ore estimates resulting from these examinations formed the basis for a preliminary report by C. H. Johnson, who recommended further exploration by diamond drilling.
