Industrial minerals play a central and dual role in the sustainable development (SD) of natural resources. Over the past decade the mining industry has increasingly focused on sustainably extracting and processing industrial minerals. This trend has been driven by higher energy costs, diminishing water resources and sensitivity towards environmental stewardship. Industrial minerals have been used throughout human history as low cost, naturally occurring, materials. Today they are critical components of recycled packaging, energy efficient building materials, light weight paper coatings, and other products critical to the responsible utilization of global resources. As industrial minerals become more widely used in ?green? products, mining companies have established best practices for the sustainable management of industrial minerals mining and processing. These management practices include reducing energy consumption, minimizing water usage, increasing waste recovery through recycling and process optimization, and maximizing the amount of ore extracted per acre of disturbed land. With the commitment to SD principles, quantitative methods for objectively measuring SD performance have become increasingly important. Measuring sustainability impact is a valuable tool for effectively applying SD principles and for making choices that balance sustainable development against other business objectives. SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT AND MINING Sustainable development is a term that has become a common part of our lexicon; however, it has multiple meanings and interpretations leading to a sometimes confusing and contradictory array of definitions. The absence of a single, precise definition reflects the fact that SD is a broad concept or paradigm that offers guiding principles as opposed to a specific set of criteria or regulations enforceable by government or other oversight agencies. While a principle based conceptual approach allows businesses to broadly apply SD practices that are tailored to their specific situation, it has also led the public to sometimes view voluntary corporate SD programs with a degree of skepticism (Walker and Howard 2002). This is particularly true in the mining industry. One reason for this skepticism is that the relationship between SD and mining is misunderstood and to many, sustainably developing non-renewable mineral resources is a contradiction (Rajaram et al. 2005). However, this view takes a very narrow interpretation of the tenets of SD. The second is that mining carries a legacy of poor environmental stewardship that does not accurately reflect current corporate environmental practices Many minerals companies have adopted the Brundtland Comission?s definition of SD (United Nations 1987): ?? development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs?. This definition is very broad and can be interpreted in a number of ways. It provides a general context for sustainable development and is not intended to provide detailed guidelines addressing specific aspects of sustainable development. To fill this gap the following SD principles were drafted by the international minerals community in 2003 (ICMM 2003): 1. Implement and maintain ethical business practices and sound systems of corporate governance. 2. Integrate sustainable development considerations within the corporate decision-making process. 3. Uphold fundamental human rights and respect cultures, customs and values in dealings with employees and others who are affected by our activities. 4. Implement risk management strategies based on valid data and sound science. 5. Seek continual improvement of our health and safety performance. 6. Seek continual improvement of our environmental performance. 7. Contribute to conservation of biodiversity and integrated approaches to land use planning. 8. Facilitate and encourage responsible product design, use, re-use, recycling and disposal of our products. 9. Contribute to the social, economic and institutional development of the communities in which we operate. 10. Implement effective and transparent engagement, communication and independently verified reporting arrangements with our stakeholders. These guidelines insure that SD concepts are applied equally across the industry while setting a clear performance standard and benchmark against which to evaluate success. By adopting these principles and issuing the Milos Statement (http://www.sdimi.org/milos_decl_October%206_2003.pdf), which provides a more detailed vision for integrating SD into everyday business operations, the minerals industry has embraced SD as a core corporate value. The unifying and holistic approach embodied in SD principles impacts the entire mine to market life cycle and addresses the economic, environmental and social consequences of mining. INDUSTRIAL MINERALS The world economy relies heavily on minerals; they are essential to economic prosperity and the quality of life. Industrial minerals are non-metallic, non-fuel minerals that provide the raw materials for a vast range of products used in most every aspect of daily life. They are mined and processed worldwide and they span the spectrum from relatively low value, high volume commodities (e.g. common clay, crushed stone) that are usually mined locally to high value, low volume specialty materials that are sourced from unique one of a kind deposits (e.g. barite, talc, mica). High volume commodity mining operations are often located near the end use market which, in most cases, means areas of high population density where construction and other urban activities drive demand. In these situations the strict adherence to SD principles is particularly critical as these are highly visible operations that must meet the public?s demand for good corporate citizenship. These operations are similar to chemical or other manufacturing facilities that operate near population centers. This Bureau of Mines report describes the evolution of modern-day blasting agent and slurry products and the state of the art of the usage of these products as it exists today. The steadily increasing consumption of blasting agents and slurries at the expense of cartridged high-explosive usage is related. Although safety is not covered in depth, reference is made to pertinent safety literature available. Product formulations, detonation reactions, and detonation products are discussed. Product terminology is defined and the significant differences between the relatively insensitive modern-day dry blasting agents and slurries and cap-sensitive high explosives are described. Blasting agent and slurry properties are discussed, as well as methods of determining and describing these properties, and specific types of products are also discussed with reference to their ingredients,-properties, and field applications. Increasing consumption of slurries, particularly in small-diameter boreholes, and the development of more cap-sensitive varieties of slurries are forecast although dry blasting agents should continue to dominate the market. The consumption of cartridged high explosives will level off or gradually decrease.

"Mineral resources are typically informed by multiple data sources of varying reliability throughout a mining project life cycle. Abundant data which are imprecise or biased or both (‘secondary data’) are often excluded from mineral resource estimations (the ‘base case’) under an intuitive, but usually untested, assumption that this data may reduce the estimation precision, bias the estimate, or both.This paper demonstrates that the assumption is often wasteful and realized only if the secondary data are naively integrated into the estimation. A number of specialized geostatistical tools are available to extract maximum value from secondary information which are imprecise or biased or both; this paper evaluates cokriging (CK), multicollocated cokriging (MCCK), and ordinary kriging with variance of measurement error (OKVME).Where abundant imprecise but unbiased secondary data are available, integration using OKVME is recommended. This re-appropriates kriging weights from less precise to more precise data locations, improving the estimation precision compared to the base case and to Ordinary Kriging (OK) of a pooled data-set. If abundant secondary data are biased and imprecise, integration through CK is recommended as the biased data are zero-sum weighted. CK consequently provides an unbiased estimate with some improvement in estimation precision compared to the base case."

Resource estimation for the West Leeville deposit is prepared using a conventional explicit approach. The geologic model is developed using interpretive methods based on visual logging. Grade shells are then prepared at low and high grade cutoffs. The low grade shell includes material of interest (Au > 0.010opt), while the high grade shell is developed slightly below the economic cutoff grade for mining. Grade estimates are made within these boundaries. This paper documents a conditional simulation study to evaluate the uncertainty contributed by both the grade shells and grade estimates. Multiple realizations are generated for the grade shells and the grades. The full combinatorial of realizations are merged to assess the uncertainty and the relative contribution of the grade shell and grades.

"Gold gravity recovery circuits utilizing enhanced gravity separators have become an integral part of many of the modern gold processing plants. Thus, efforts to improve the operating efficiency have been a topic of interest for metallurgists for many years. As part of this endeavour, a methodology to estimate the portion of gold in the ore that could be recovered by gravity separation (gravity recoverable gold or GRG) was developed at McGill University. It has been reported in the literature that the gold content estimated with this methodology is the theoretical maximum that is available for gravity recovery that could only be approached but never achieved. A comparison of GRG recovery obtained in the laboratory with the actual recovery in the plant shows that plants recover between one-third to two-thirds of the value predicted by the laboratory test.Research conducted at COREM shows that particle shape transformation during grinding is a major cause of the discrepancy (even though the bleed percent processed, the quality of cyclone classification and the operating conditions of the gravity separator also contribute to the difference). To analyze the gold particle shapes and their deportment, samples were collected from different streams of a grinding-gravity circuit in a gold plant and compared to a concentrate sample from the standard GRG test. A particle characterization methodology based on gold morphology was developed. GRG mapping in a conventional grinding-gravity circuit and the transformation of GRG into non-GRG, as mainly explained by gold particle reshaping, will be discussed. The knowledge gained from the shape analysis will be used to develop shape distributions and partition curves for the classification of shapes.INTRODUCTIONGravity concentration using centrifugal concentrators has gained increasing popularity since the invention of the enhanced gravity concentrators in the nineteen eighties. Among these, the semicontinuous centrifugal gravity concentrators are most commonly used for recovering gold and platinum group minerals (PGM) from grinding circuit streams. The benefits of gold gravity recovery are now well understood and the acceptance by the mining industry is overwhelming. The occurrence of reasonable amounts of gravity recoverable gold (GRG) in an ore prompts gold mills to install gravity circuits. Thus, the increased use of gravity concentration has necessitated a better understanding of the behavior of gold in grinding circuits and of the factors affecting the performance of the gravity concentrator (Laplante et al., 1995). Due to its high density (19.3 g/cm3 when pure) and malleability properties, gold tends to accumulate in circulating streams making it attractive for gravity recovery. The gravity recovery units are typically installed on a bleed stream of the cyclone underflow, mill discharge or cyclone feed."

San Manuel has been a modern prodigy from its inception to its present status as a block-caving operation producing 33,000 tons per day. The deposit was discovered, prospected, and developed with modern techniques, and nearly all planning was done from results of an extensive drilling program through an average overburden of 670 feet. The Federal Government had a prominent part in the discovery and primary development of San Manuel. The first 17 holes were drilled by the Bureau of Mines, and discovery of the large, low-grade, disseminated copper deposit is credited to the Bureau. A loan fund of 94 million was granted through the Reconstruction Finance Corporation to the San Manuel Copper Corp. for development of the deposit and erection of concentrating and smelting facilities. Then, while the mine was still being developed, the Defense Materials Procurement Agency contracted to buy a large amount of copper at a pegged price.

The process of electrostatic separation was developed in the late 19th century, but did not make much headway for about 25 years. High dc voltages, of the order of 20 kilovolts, are involved, and the only means of obtaining such voltages at that time were by the use of frictional machines, such as the Wimshurst. These were not reliable, for two reasons:-a. If a spark discharge occurred it took an appreciable time before a steady voltage was again attained.b. In damp weather the machines were almost useless.In the first 20 years of the 20th century the advent of mechanical and vacuum-tube rectifiers led to promising developments of 'the process. In the early 1920's flotation became widely used commercially, and proved to be more reliable, and capable of wider application, than electrostatic separation. During the last 15 years or so, with a better knowledge of the fundamentals forming the basis of the process, electrostatic separation is beginning to compete with flotation, especially in the treatment of smallsizedgranular material, such as beach sands. Electrostatic separation can be, and is, widely used in many cases where flotation is impossible, such as in the cleaning of food products which must be kept dry.

.1. The purification pilot plant and the equipment, solution, and gas cycle used for removing hydrogen sulfide and carbon dioxide are described. 2. As sulfur recovery is necessary in any large Fischer-Tropsch plant, pilot-plant runs were made at 300 p.s.i.g. to study the efficiency of tri-ethanolamine solutions in removing selectively hydrogen sulfide from gases containing varying amounts of carbon dioxide. 3. Aqueous solutions of TEA of 20, 30; 35, and 50 percent were investi¬gated. Data indicate that 30 to 35 percent is the optimum concentration if both selectivity and economy are considered. Slightly better selectivity is obtained with the.20 percent solution, but steam consumption is greater owing to the higher solution rates. Results from our pilot plant runs indicate that a 50 percent solution not only produces an acid gas of lower hydrogen sulfide content but also requires high solution rates to effect hydrogen sulfide purification. 4. Data from 37 runs using TEA are presented in tabular form. In addition, the data are correlated and presented in three sets of curves. By using these curves, it is possible to calculate the compositions of the purified and acid gases for various raw gas mixtures. 5. In cooperation with the Southern Natural Gas Co., investigations were carried out at 300 p.s.i.g. on the simultaneous removal of hydrogen sulfide and carbon dioxide, from gases using various concentrations of diethanolamine. 6. Data from 17 runs employing 20, 30, and 40 percent DEA are reported in both tabular and graphic form. 7. A comparison of the data from one DEA run made at 200 p.s.i.g. with those from the runs operating at 30O p.s.i.g. shows float the absorption capacity of the solution, and, hence, the steam requirements per gallon are about the sage for both pressures. .The only real advantage of the higher pressure is the additional volume of gas that can be treated. 8. The quantity of steam needed to reactivate fouled TEA and DEA solutions increased as the reactivator pressure was increased about 1,0 to 1.1 pounds of steam was required for each gallon of circulating solution when the reactivator was operated at 5 p.s.i.g. 9. A curve is included that shows the effect of the hydrogen sulfide con-centration in a lean 35 percent TEA solution on the hydrogen sulfide content of the purified gas and on steam consumption for reactivation. 10. Both TEA and DEA reduced the organic sulfur content of the raw synthesis gas considerably. Analyses of the lean amine solutions showed a gradual build up of sulfur compounds, indicating that the compounds formed by the amines and organic sulfur do not break down under the ordinary operating conditions of the reactivator. 11. Considerable operating difficulty was encountered in the pilot plant owing to foaming of the amine solutions. Laboratory experiments in which the effectiveness of certain antifoam agents was studied showed Alkaterge C to be most promising for the particular conditions studied.

Following is a brief resume of the Division's activities that have had a favorable effect on health, safety, and the reduction of injuries at coal mines: 1. The Federal Mine Safety Code for Bituminous Coal and Lignite Mines of the United States was issued originally by the Director of the Bureau of Mines on July 24, 1946, after consulting with management and labor representatives of the coal-mining industry. The code has been used by Federal coal-mine inspectors while inspecting bituminous-coal and lignite mines as a basis for determining the existence of unhealthful and unsafe conditions and practices in these mines. A revised code was issued by the Secretary of the Interior on October 8, 1953, after further consultations with representatives of management and mine workers and was incorporated by reference in the 1952 and subsequent bituminous-coal wage agreements. The agreement of May 29, 1946, between the Secretary of the Interior, acting as Coal Mines Administrator under authority of Executive Order 9728, and the United Mine Workers of America, covering bituminous-coal and lignite mines in Government possession, charged Federal coal-mine inspectors with the responsibility of making periodic investigations of the mines and reporting to the Coal Mines Administrator any violations of the Federal Mine Safety Code. Federal coal-mine inspectors also had temporary authority to close mines found to be imminently dangerous, but such authority under Executive Order 9728 was removed on June 30, 1947, when Government control of the mines was terminated.

In comparison with shallow foundation, usually higher bearing capacity, smaller average settlement and better stability are the engineering characteristics of pile foundation. Besides, a smaller differential settlement and a lower settlement rate which will converge quickly are more important characteristics. The superstructure of the building with pile foundation may not meet with significant differential settlement. In this paper, settlement records and other data of different kinds of buildings are chosen to illustrate the characteristics of pile foundation. Moreover, some technical problems in connection with foundation engineering solved in consideration of the above mentioned characteristics of pile foundation are also introduced.

INTRODUCTION The design/build (D/B) philosophy of contract delivery is neither new nor unusual when it comes to at-grade, elevated or high-rise structures. But when it comes to constructing underground facilities, there were no examples to be followed in early 90sin the continental United States or its territories. When DMJM+HARRIS was selected as general architectural and engineering consultant for the Tren Urbano (TU) project in Puerto Rico, one of the requirements of the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) for funding commitment was to use TU as a demonstration project utilizing design/build contract delivery method. Now fifteen years later, New York City Transit (NYCT) has instituted a similar requirement for their first Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) contract for the Second Avenue Subway. As with most construction mega-projects, lots of things have happened and there were several lessons learned from the TU experience that are now being applied to Second Avenue. Both of these projects require building tunnels and underground transit facilities in heavily traveled corridors of an urban city, in the vicinity of active business and commercial enterprises. To enhance the challenge, there are noise and vibration sensitive and historic urban receptors either over or along both the transit corridors. Column free Tren Urbano station caverns over18 m (60 ft.) wide were built in soft ground conditions within 3.6 m (12 ft.) of the surface under an aging heavy utility corridor, while NYCT tunnels with station structures stretching the limits of rock caverns to 34.8 m (100 ft.), were planned in rocky geology with the presence of shear and fault zones and some mixed face conditions. BACKGROUND During the early period of design/build experimentation, the speed with which the contract procurement packages could be put together enabled the owners to take advantage of the major efforts underway to rebuild the infrastructure that was suffering from post-World War II neglect. Use of design/build for new starts was unheard of and most of the projects were smaller in nature in order to allow the methodology to be tested. Five wells have been drilled in the Basker/Manta Block of VIC/P19, Gippsland Basin, resulting in sub-economic Intra-Latrobe Group oil and gas discoveries at Basker-1 and Manta-1. A total of 21 individual hydrocarbon bearing sandstones were intersected by the two wells. These reservoir sand bodies were deposited by fluvial processes in a lower coastal plain environment. The modelling of sand body orientation and geometry is a critical component in the evaluation of the two accumulations. Seismic resolution of the thin (average 2 m to 5 m) sand bodies is inadequate for mapping their orientation and distribution. Dipmeter data has been successfully applied to the problem of orienting the sand bodies using FMS images acquired during the drilling of Gummy-1 and reprocessed HDT data from Basker-1 and Manta-1. Prediction of lateral extensiveness (geometry) of individual sand bodies has also been attempted. Interpreted palaeocurrent direction from all three wells is dominantly from the NW to the SE. Reservoirs in the Manta-1/Gummy-1 area are interpreted to be predominantly channel sands, deposited by relatively low sinuosity streams. As such they would tend to have a laterally extensive, elongate geometry. Sand bodies deposited in the Basker-1 area show a predominance of laterally accreted cycles deposited by meandering streams. Channel geometry may then be limited in the downstream/upstream direction by internal permeability barriers such as clay plugs.

The U.S. Geological Survey has completed a dig-ital coal resource assessment of six of the top-producing coal beds and coal zones in the northern and central Appalachian Basin coal regions. These include the Pennsylvanian-aged Pittsburgh, Upper Freeport, Lower Kittanning, Fire Clay, Pond Creek, and Pocahontas No. 3 coal beds and coal zones. Resources were calculated on all of the coalbeds/zones, with the exception of the Lower Kittanning coal bed. Preliminary original resources are estimated at about 93 billion short tons (84 billion tonnes), of which about 66 billion short tons (60billion tonnes) remain. Much of the remaining coal in all five coal beds/zones is thinner [<3.5 ft (1.07m)] and deeper [>1,000 ft (305 m)] than the coal that has been mined, but economic resources are still available and mining in each coal bed/zones will continue throughout this decade and into the next given current market conditions.

"Microflotation, laboratory batch, and in-plant minicell continuous tests were conducted to determine if copper ions not only activate sphalerite but also depress pyrite when the minerals are together. Microflotation tests showed that pyrite recovery increased with addition of copper ions in the pH range of 5-10 when alone, but decreased when sphalerite was also present. Batch flotation tests (Red Dog ore) showed that upon addition of copper, pyrite recovery decreased significantly. The continuous tests (Louvicourt Mine) confirmed this and indicated that with excess copper pyrite recovery can increase. The results suggest there is competition for copper and xanthate in favour of sphalerite. To take advantage of this competition it may be necessary to control the sequence and rate of copper, collector, and lime addition. INTRODUCTIONFlotation, in common with all physical separations, is an imperfect process that results in misplacement of minerals. One source of this imperfection is accidental activation by contaminating metal ions. An important practical example is the misplacement of pyrite to zinc concentrates. Flotation of sphalerite generally requires activation by copper ions, added as copper sulphate. Copper ions are also used to activate pyrite [l] hence there is the suspicion that accidental activation contributes to the recovery of pyrite (Py) with the sphalerite (Sp). However, recent literature has shown that copper ions may make Py less floatable if Sp is also present. Xu et al. [2] conducted continuous minicell tests in-plant at Kidd Creek Operations (division of Falconbridge Ltd.) and showed that while the addition of copper sulphate improved zinc/iron selectivity, it did so as much by reducing the recovery of pyrite as increasing zinc recovery (Figure 1)."

Twelve healthy, experienced underground cool miners performed lifting capacity tests in stooped and kneeling postures using a modified psychophysical procedure. Subjects adjusted weight in a lifting box to the maximum they could handle without undue fatigue in an asymmetric lifting task. Lifting periods were 20 min in duration and the frequency was 10 lifts/min. Tests were performed under a 48-in. roof that restricted the subject&apos;s posture. Psychophysical. physiological, and biomechanical dependent measures included the maximum acceptable weight of lift (MAWL), heart rate (HR), rate of oxygen consumption (VO2), ventilation volume rate (VF), respiratory exchange ratio (R), and integrated electromyography (EMG) of eight trunk muscles. Results indicated that the MAWL was significantly lower when kneeling than when stooped (p < 0.05), Furthermore, metabolic demands were greater in terms of HR (p < 0.005) mid VO2 (p < 0.05) when kneeling. Left and tight erectores spinae muscles exhibited increased EMG activity- in the kneeling posture (p < 0.001). It was concluded that psychophysical lifting capacity is decreased, while the metabolic stress and internal load on the spine are increased, in the kneeling posture. Results of this Bureau of Mines study indicate that it may be advisable to reduce the weight of materials that are handled repetitively in the kneeling posture.

By direct aging treated, creep properties measurement and microstructure observation, the influences of the direct aging treatment on the creep behaviors of Hot Continuous Rolled GH4169 superalloy are investigated. Results show that the creep resistance of Hot Continuous Rolled GH4169 superalloy may be obviously improved by directly aged treatment. Under the applied stress of 700MPa at 660, the creep lifetime of the alloy is enhanced to 126h from 60h. During hot continuous rolling, the deformation features of the alloy are the twinning and the double orientations slipping of the dislocation activated within the twinning regions. After direct aging treated, the alloy displays a smaller grain size, and the finer g² phase is dispersedly precipitated in the matrix of the alloy, which is thought to be a main reason of enhancing creep lifetime of the alloy.

Although there are exceptions, oxidized silver ores containing the higher oxides of manganese are generally refractory to hydrometallurgical methods of treatment. When these ores are of high enough grade they can be smelted; indeed, some rather low-grade ores of this type have been smelted at a profit because of their fluxing value. In the past, when these ores could not be smelted, they either were not treated or were treated at low efficiency, generally by cyanidation. The need for thorough investigation of the problem was therefore evident for some time before the writers began their research. The problem of treating manganese-silver ores seems to have been recognized first about 35 years ago by C. W. Goodale in applying pan amalgamation at Tombstone, Ariz. He attributed the low extraction of silver to the fouling of the mercury by manganese rather than to the presence of a refractory compound of manganese and silver. Although definite knowledge as to the cause of the poor extraction of silver was lacking, a more or less effective preliminary treatment, that is, a chloridizing roast, was applied.

Mine wide, underground wireless communications are possible with the use of Ultra Low Frequency (ULF) technology. Due to the propagation through rock of ULF radio signals a relatively small antenna can provide communications coverage over a complete mining operation. Starting as a Personal Emergency Device (PED) for emergency messaging to miners under all circumstances, the ULF communications system has grown to include capabilities of remote control of underground equipment such as pumps and fans and centralised blasting initiation. This technology is now in use on 5 continents having lately made it onto the African mining scene. The paper and presentation will provide the audience with the benefit from international mining know-how in this technology as well as local African experiences. A recent commissioning exercise for example, is expected to pay for itself in electricity savings within a few months. These and other results from practical demonstrations and usage will be covered. This novel technology becomes an integral part of the daily operating infrastructure of a mine with immediate safety and business benefits. It is able to reduce capital expenditure and is designed for ease of routine operational use. The paper will conclude with insights into current R&D for further development of this technology.
