Numerical simulations of the physicochemical processes related to acid rock drainage (ARD) in the Sugar Shack South rock pile of the Questa Mine were performed with the TOUGH AMD simulator. The objectives were to 1) identify the main processes responsible for observed present-day conditions, 2) provide an estimate of gas phase humidity transfer, and 3) give a preliminary indication of the potential impact of closure involving the installation of an alluvial soil cover. Modeling results indicated that the mine rock geometry (thin layers placed along steep mountain slopes) favors the onset of strong thermal air convection. Simulations also indicate that resloping the piles would not significantly reduce convection and oxidation. For simulation purposes, a potential cover with the permeability range of a local alluvium was investigated and found to be of questionable effectiveness since its permeability can exceed the value of 3x10-13 m2 required to prevent thermal air convection and reduce ARD.

Over the past few years developments in heavy minerals processing have concentrated on the mineral separation portion of the business. The best example of this would include new developments in rare-earth magnetic separators and associated flowsheet modifications. Except for some minor modifications in spirals, the æwetÆ side of the separation business has lagged behind the ædryÆ side. Basic concentrator design has not changed in 20 years. Recent pilot trials by Outokumpu Technology have shown the benefits of a new gravity flowsheet that combines density separation and spiral concentration on a variety of heavy mineral deposits. This concept is already well utilised within the iron ore industry. The synergistic combination of these two technologies allows smaller, simpler, and controllable gravity concentrators to be built while providing equivalent or better grade and recoveries of valuable heavy mineral. This is contrasted to the all spiral flowsheet characterised by the diminishing returns of multiple stages of spirals and associated recirculating loads. Examples of the flowsheets and associated benefits will be presented from a variety of cases.

"Longwall abutment loads are influenced by several factors, including depth of cover, pillar sizes, panel dimensions, geological setting, mining height, proximity to gob, intersection type, and size of the gob. How does proximity to the gob affect pillar loading and entry condition? Does the gob influence depend on whether the abutment load is a forward, side, or rear loading? Do non-typical bleeder entry systems follow the traditional front and side abutment loading and extent concepts? If not, will an improved understanding of the combined abutment extent warrant a change in pillar design or standing support in bleeder entries?This paper details observations made in the non-typical bleeder entries of a moderate depth longwall panel; specifically, it explores data collected from borehole pressure cells and roof extensometers, observations of the conditions of the entries, and numerical modeling of the bleeder entries during longwall extraction. The primary focus was the extent and magnitude of the abutment loading experienced due to the extraction of the longwall panels. Due to the layout of the longwall panels and bleeder entries, the borehole pressure cells (BPCs) and roof extensometers did not show much change due to the advancing of the first longwall. However, they did show a noticeable increase due to the second longwall advancement, a maximum of about 4 MPa of pressure increase and 5 mm of roof deformation. The observations of the conditions showed little to no change from before the first longwall panel extraction began to when the second longwall panel had been advanced more than 915 meters. Localized pillar spalling was observed on the corners of the pillars closest to the longwall gob as was an increase in water in the entries. In addition to the observations and instrumentation, numerical modeling was performed to validate modeling procedures against the monitoring results and evaluate the bleeder design. ITASCA Consulting Group’s FLAC3D numerical modeling software was used to evaluate the bleeder entries. The results of the models indicated only a minor increase in load during the extraction of the longwall panels. These models showed a much greater increase in stress due to the development of the gateroad and bleeder entries—about 80% development and 20% longwall extraction. The FLAC3D model showed very good correlation between modeled and expected gateroad loading during panel extraction. The front and side abutment extent modeled was very similar to observations from this and previous panels."

The involvement of concerned parties in all aspects of the Lihir Project from an early stage has promoted good relations between all groups. Activities involving landowners, the Lihir community, the New Ireland Provincial Government (NIPG) and the prospective developer include the Lihir Liaison Committee, Lihir Working Group, Environmental Planning Committee, Provincial Mining Task Force and the Lihir Mining Area Landowners Association (LMALA). With modifications, the Lihir Liaison model may be of use in promoting good relationships among parties in other mineral developments.

I n the simplest application of a shock tube initiation system, the tubing acts as a “relay line” which passes a detonation signal from borehole to borehole. When the signal arrives at each borehole, it causes the detonator attached to it to fire. Such a single path constitutes a progressive series where each unit must function properly in order to activate the following units. Any application error, malfunction, or mistake in connecting any surface unit will stop the progression of the detonation signal through the system and result in a “cutoff” or misfire of the following charges.

The Bureau of Mines (Bureau), in cooperation with the Alaska Division of Geological and Geophysical Surveys (ADGGS), conducted field investigations from 1987 through 1989 in the 5.7 million-acre Valdez Creek Mining District (VCMD) in south-central Alaska. The objective of the VCMD investigation was to evaluate the mineral resources and the mineral development potential of the mining district. The investigation was part of the Bureau's continuing statewide mining district evaluation program. Nineteen new mineral occurrences were identified as a result of this investigation. Reconnaissance placer sampling resulted in the identification of 10 previously unreported occurrences that primarily contain gold, however, some contain subsidiary platinum-group metals and/or tin. Reconnaissance lode sampling resulted in the identification of two gold-silver occurrences, three platinum-group metal occurrences that contain elevated quantities of subsidiary chromium, nickel and/or cobalt, three copper occurrences that contain subsidiary molybdenum or zinc, and one zinc occurrence.

"Abstract Although one can think that it is very low the probability of a seism occurrence during the execution of an excavation in an urban lot protected by a diaphragm wall curtain, reality shows that whenever a seism occurs in an urban area several diaphragm walls will be affected by it. So it is advisable to consider the seismic action when designing a diaphragm wall curtain. The paper refers the main information about the seismic design of diaphragm walls according to the Eurocodes 7 and 8 and to the Portuguese Norms related to them (respectively NP EN 1997-1 2010 and NP EN 1998-5 2010), as the Eurocodes consider the possibility of each European country to adopt their own seismic parameters as the seismic risk is different in each country. Magnetic separation is an age-old technique for mineral beneficiation operations. The existing mathematical models for magnetic separators are quite complicated, and it is very difficult to measure the theoretical separation efficiency. The connectionist approach of modeling, to establish the relationships of the inputs and outputs, is preferred for this kind of problem. Experiments were carried out on a high-intensity roll magnetic separator to develop a database using four input variables (magnetic flux intensity, particle size, splitter position and roll speed) and two output variables (weight recovery and Fe recovery). The artificial neural network (ANN) and statistical methods (MLRG) were used to model the magnetic separation process. For the ANN, the regression coefficient (R2) values between the predicted and measured results were 0.89 and 0.94 for Fe recovery and weight recovery, respectively. Compared to ANN, the multivariable linear regression analysis showed inferior performance in predicting the weight recovery and the Fe recovery. The ANN models for the roll magnetic separator can predict the separation efficiency up to an acceptable limit. These models can be used to modify the operational parameters at mineral beneficiation plants to minimize the effects of variations in the raw material characteristics.

San Martin Mine is an open pit, gold heap leach operation located approximately 70 kilometers from the Honduran capital of Tegucigalpa. Mining operations commenced in 2000 and were completed late in 2007, while heap leaching operations continue. Reclamation was executed concurrently with operations to the extent practical. The area has distinct rainy and dry seasons and closure objectives include: prevention and mitigation of acid rock drainage, sediment and erosion control, and mitigation of visual impacts. Final closure is well underway at San Martin and this paper describes the closure processes conducted to date, problems encountered, and the subsequent lessons learned.

In the federal state of North Rhine Westphalia (Germany) small and medium sized companies are beginning to extract the related gas via old shafts or boreholes and to use it as a source for the production of electricity and heat. More than 100 applications for the separate mining right on mine gas had already been filed by beginning of 2002, since mine gas is treated as a mineral resource under the Federal Mining Law. Meanwhile more than 40 mine gas concessions have been granted and first projects are being developed with encouraging results so far. To enhance the applied techniques and their efficiency Aachen University has formed a research team in this discipline. Scope and goals of this research activities are being presented in this paper. Several years ago, Hudco Industrial Products began experimenting with the idea of levitating a conveyor belt with a film of air, much like the puck on an air-hockey table. While conducting its research, the company found out that some Russian and Dutch companies attempted the concept during the 1970s. After studying those conveyors, Hudco determined that its design was better. The Hudco advanced air-supported conveyor consists of an air-tight plenum, or chamber, that runs the length of the belt. The topside of the plenum has a formed trough. It corresponds to the profile of conventional troughing rollers. Low-pressure air is provided to the sealed plenum from a low horsepower blower. This pressurized air is metered and released through the central portion of the trough and reacts against the underside of the belt. The differential pressure between the top and bottom surfaces creates the lift to support the loaded belt. Airtight covers are installed to seal the transported materials in the plenum trough.

The State Division of Geology Arkansas Resources and Development Commission, and the Arkansas-Oklahoma Coal, Operators Association requested assistance from the Bureau of Mines in a study of coal-mining methods and practices in .Arkansas coal mines with the objective of reducing production costs. On October 7, 1946, a joint meeting was held by representatives of the Arkansas Resources and Development Commission, approximately 30 coal-mine Operators of the Arkansas -Oklahoma Coal Operaters Association, and representatives of the Bureau of Mines. The many problems confronting the coal industry in Arkansas, including mechanical mining in thin beds, costs, labor, and working time were discussed. Following this Meeting, a joint letter from Harold B. Foxhall, State geologist, and -P. R. Stewart, commissioner, Arkansas-Oklahoma Coal Operators Association, was addressed to Dr. R. R. Sayers; former ,Director of the Bureau of Mines, requesting that mining conditions in Arkansas be studied.

This is a progress report summarizing more than 5 years of a long-range Bureau of Mines research program. The purpose of this program has been to investigate the fire and explosion properties of Green River oil shale in the Bureau's Experimental Mine, in laboratories, and in the field. The lean limits of explosibility of oil shale dust, by small-and large-scale tests, are reported as a function of grade, ignition source, and particle size. A limited number of laboratory tests on the autoignition of oil shale dust layers and the spontaneous combustion tendencies of oil shale are described. Moderate-scale rubble fire tests were conducted to determine flame spread rates as a function of ventilation flow. With the aid of a system to continuously monitor methane emissions in a deep oil shale mine, the characteristics of the methane flow are reported as a function of ventilation and blasting procedures, and are compared with gas yields from core samples. Tentative predictions as to the emission of the methane to be expected in deep oil shale mines, far from the outcrop, are offered. Brief reference is made to a parallel investigation into the fire and explosion hazards of oil shale mining and processing by a Bureau contractor; detailed results of the latter investigation are to be found in the contractor's reports.

The markets and applications of Wyoming bentonite deposits are primarily determined by the functional properties of a bentonite ore which results from the unique mineralogy and chemistry of each deposit. Commercial bentonite products contain sodium montmorillonite as the major mineral component, with minor concentrations of accessory minerals such as quartz, opal (silica hydrate), mica, feldspar, gypsum and zeolites. The chemical composition of the sodium montmorillonite influences the functional properties of the bentonite in significant ways. The type and concentration of various accessory minerals also influence the acceptability of the bentonite in each market.

The paper describes a technique that has been developed by the Health and Safety Executive (USE) to make an assessment of the effectiveness of Health and Safety (H and S) management at complex sites. The paper then describes how the technique was adapted and used for the first time at a large coal mine. The results highlighted certain deficiencies in the safety management system, allowing directed advice to he given to management.

The Mitsubishi Process is the sole pyrometallurgical process for the continuous production of blister copper from copper concentrates. Continuous converting originates from the application of the proven technology of a lime-ferrite slag (CaO-FeOX-Cu2O) on the Converting Furnace (C-furnace). Recent improvements on the C-furnace operation have included increasing the processing of recycled materials and the investigation of alternative fluxing agents. However, some minor oxides adversely affect C-furnace operation, with respect to magnetite behavior of the slag, with the most significant impact having been observed with the silica content of the slag. This paper will quantify the impact of silica on the lime-based slag, and discusses the controls that have been identified to sustain continuous converting operation.

For decades, the mining industry has been focussed to find an efficient and economically attractive process for the leaching of chalcopyrite. Jetti Resources has developed a novel hydrometallurgical alternative to extract metals of value from mineral ores that the mining industry has struggled to process. Jetti’s catalytic technology, whilst being especially advantaged for extracting copper from low-grade and highly refractory minerals, such as chalcopyrite, seamlessly integrates with existing heap leaching methods and downstream processing operations. The technology uses a catalyst which weakens the metal-sulfide bond in the crystalline structure of the chalcopyrite mineral and alters the structure of the passivation layer allowing the leaching process to continue. Metallurgical test work was conducted to examine the effect of ore variability, in terms of grade and copper deportment. The results presented in this study highlight the amenability of the technology and demonstrate that it is possible to enhance leaching performance of copper primary sulfides over a wide range of copper grades, from 0.1 to 2.2%. Further, it is concluded that despite the copper grade, the tests with increasing chalcopyrite content render copper recoveries up to 4 times higher compared to the tests under non-catalyzed conditions. Jetti’s catalytic technology is currently being evaluated at larger scales, namely a commercial dump leach operation and 50-tonne crib tests. The results obtained thus far are compared to the results from conventional sulfide heap leaching tests. INTRODUCTION For decades, the mining industry has been focussed to find an efficient and economically attractive process for the leaching of chalcopyrite. Chalcopyrite (CuFeS2) is the most abundant and recalcitrant of the copper sulfides (Singer, 2017). Owing to its abundance and economic importance, it is the most demandable natural source for copper worldwide. In fact, the projected demand for copper is further expected to rise much higher beyond the current demand by the year 2020 (Panda et al., 2015). Therefore, it becomes imperative to find low intensity hydrometallurgical technologies for the extraction of copper from chalcopyrite in ores of such low-grades that are un-economic to concentrate and to augment the supply by extracting copper from ores with complex mineralogy that cannot be concentrated (Watling, 2013).

Although ASARCO Incorporated, the only domestic producer, had terminated copper smelting operations and associated recovery of byproduct arsenic trioxide at Tacoma, WA, in 1985, it shipped small quantities of both trioxide and metal from its remaining stocks in 1986. Imports for consumption of arsenic trioxide increased significantly, owing to increased demand for arsenical wood preservatives and the decrease in domestic shipments of trioxide. Prices remained unchanged throughout the year. Development of gallium arsenide integrated circuits, important in advanced military and commercial electronics circuitry, continued to gain momentum during 1986. Domestic Data Coverage.-Shipments of small amounts of arsenic trioxide and metal from remaining stocks by Asarco were reported voluntarily to the Bureau of Mines.
