An approach of geological mapping and descriptive criteria has been used to identify hydrothermal eruption breccias, named the Onemana Breccia. These in part mantle a gold bearing fossil hydrothermal system located on the eastern side of the Coromandel Peninsula, New Zealand. Whilst eruption breccias are documented from active and recent geothermal centres within the Taupo Volcanic Zone and in Northland their recognition at Onemana is the first confirmed discovery for this lithotype within ancient hydrothermal systems of the Coromandel Volcanic Zone. At Onemana the widespread occurrence of silicification, sinters, volcanic lake sediments, eruption breccias and advanced argillic alteration allows classic hot spring epithermal modelling. The geological setting, distribution, lithological characteristics, hydrothermal alteration and trace element geochemistry of the Onemana eruption breccias are described. These breccias are closely comparable with hydrothermal eruption deposits elsewhere, particularly those in active ore forming hydrothermal systems. Consideration is given specifically to the role of the Onemana Breccia in an exploration strategy for discovering epithermal gold-silver deposits.

Within a 30-mile radius of Sudbury, Ontario, the Ontario division of the International Nickel Co. of Canada, Ltd., operates nine underground mines and two open pits. Prior to 1966, ore removal from the underground workings was mainly by scraping, using 125-hp electric slushers in blasthole and caving mining, and 30-hp or less air-operated slushers for fill- method mining. The development and evaluation of low-profile, diesel-powered front-end loaders, designed specifically for underground operations, was followed with keen interest during the period 1964-1965.

The overall purpose of this study was to develop and evaluate, in the laboratory, instrumentation and procedures which might allow for the use of physical measurements of earmuff attenuation which would yield results equivalent to those obtained from psychophysical measures of attenuation. The ultimate goal was to evaluate techniques which might subsequently prove feasible for physical measurement of earmuff attenuation in the field. Current instruments were modified to have a response similar to differrences observed in earmuff attenuation as observed in Volume 1 of the current contract. Mining noise spectra were selected and presented to a single subject seated in a diffuse noise field. The subject wore one of the muffs evaluated in the earlier study and was also fitted with two physical sound measurement systems. A linear system measured the "outside" noise level and a linear system plus "correction" filter measured the "in-side" noise level. These measurements indicated that, under the procedures presented in this report, a laboratory method for measuring earmuff attenuation is feasible and yields results comparable to an extensive psycho-physical procedure.

This report contains the results of an investigation into the feasibility of periodically measuring parameters of the insulation for a mine electrical power system in order to detect incipient faults. The variety of insulation parameters evaluated included insulation resistance, dissipation factor, power factor (vs. applied voltage), current harmonics, leakage current, infrared radiation, as well as certain circuit breaker parameters and tests. In order to augment field tests a program of accelerated life testing was also carried out. Apparent inconsistencies in data were identified as the result of environmental effects, primarily temperature and relative humidity. A series of environmental tests were conducted to develop correction factors that allow one to refer measured parameters to standard conditions. A portable data collector was develop-ed to aid in the accurate collection and analysis of laboratory and field data. The primary conclusion is that insulation deterioration can be measured and failure predicted with reasonable confidence. The secondary conclusion is that most of the tests are impractical in the field although useful in the laboratory. Infrared sensing, insulation resistance and dissipation factor are the best insulation field tests when portability is taken into account.

Blasting conducted in the USA using the new Electronic Initiation System developed by Altech has shown that an accurate delay system will benefit the customer. Results from test work clearly showed that improved fragmentation was effected and blast vibration was at least similar to that currently found at the test venue with improvements possible.

An environmental assessment or impact statement for onshore waste disposal under the Notional Environmental Policy Act is expected to occur with the development of commercial deep seabed mining. An environmental assessment was conducted in order that testing and refinement of nodule waste disposal techniques can he completed prior to 1988, when commercial seabed mining can begin under U.S. legislation. Within this study three classes of process and four classes of waste disposal technique were identified, and five sites were selected as representative of first-generation nodule operations. Each realistic site/process/disposal technique combination was compared against potential effects to determine important characteristics of the rejects and the sites. Regulatory requirements were also considered at each site to identify important issues and their effect on the permitting process. Principal conclusions in the report are the following: (1) uncertainties exist in the regulatory regimes for hydrometallurgical process tailings, primarily regarding classification as hazardous waste; (2) slogs from nodule processing are expected to be inert and relatively easy to dispose of at all sites; and (3) additional physical and chemical information on properties of rejects from all processes is necessary to predict environmental effects.

The primary aim of the present investigation is to develop a model which permits to calculate/predict the viscosities of ferromanganese slags, typically focus on the MnO-SiO2-Al2O3-CaO-MgO-FeO multicomponent system. The present viscosity model emphasizes the ability of prediction, i.e. using the binary parameters to extrapolate the viscosities in ternary and higher order systems. To this end, a physical sound model is essential. Temperature dependence of viscosity is described by the Eyring?s formalism. The well-known cell model is used to define the SiO44- tetrahedra in the silicate melts. Composition dependence is expressed in term of viscous activation energy, which is characterized by the binary structural units. The viscosities in ternary and higher order systems are hence predicted using the binary activation parameters. The model has been used to calculate the viscosities in the whole liquid composition range of ferromanganese slag.

The extraction of ore in panel caving operations also involves the coextraction of non-economic material, known as dilution. Forecasting, avoiding, and understanding the mechanics of dilution is critical to longterm planning. The models of dilution that are currently in use in panel caving operations are those by Laubscher (1994), who postulated that dilution is due to gravitational flow and depends on the height of interaction, the column height, and the draw uniformity. This paper presents a back-analysis of extraction and dilution behaviour at Codelco?s El Salvador and Andina Divisions, which use panel caving as a mining method. This analysis was conducted in order to review the existent dilution entry mechanisms and calculation methods. Three sources of dilution were identified. The first source is ?gravitational dilution?, which is due to gravitational flow and mixing as dilution migrates by gravity from a sector located above the panel under analysis. The second source of dilution is ?caving dilution?, which occurs when an air gap is formed in a large area and a sudden propagation of a hang-up occurs, inducing early ingress of waste into the production level from a level above. The third mode observed is ?lateral dilution?, which occurs when the panel is located next to an exhausted sector and the broken material enters the draw column early during draw. In the last two cases, dilution could migrate large distances horizontally. The mine data indicated that draw and caving strategy are key for long-term planning of large panel caves.

Continuing analysis of environmental samples for asbestos content has resulted in the misidentification of non-asbestos amphibole particles as asbestos fibers. These errors have received wide publicity (such as in the asbestos-in-crayon story) and have caused unnecessary reformulation of products. The primary cause of these errors has been a poor understanding of mineralogy and analytical techniques among the many asbestos laboratories that arose following the passage of the AHERA regulations. Presented here is a procedure based on published data that can be used to correctly classify an elongated particle as asbestos or as non-asbestos.

Fan applications in the mining industry have changed during the last 70 years. In 1922, J.R. Robinson authored a technical volume entitled Practical Mine Ventilation. At that time, atmospheric control had only recently shifted from natural to mechanical. The large, mechanical draft fans that were used then were centrifugal. The fans ran at low speeds, about300 rpm. Most were steam-engine driven. In the late 1920s and early 1930s, mines became larger, increasing the pressure and volume requirements of the fan equipment. Axial fans were designed to run at much higher speeds (710 to 880 rpm) and were driven by electric motors. They were also smaller and less expensive to install than the cumbersome centrifugal units. However, changes in mining have resulted in progressively higher static-pressure requirements. So centrifugal fans are once again proving to be a good choice.

A Bureau of Mines procedure was developed for the analysis of volatile matter in airborne coal dust-rock dust mixtures prior to, and resulting from, coal mine fires and explosions. Dust in the 10-to 20-mg weight range can be analyzed. Volatile matter is determined by a greatly scaled-down version of the empirical macro-scale method used by the Bureau. The alkaline earth carbonates in the rock dust are dissolved in acid prior to the volatile matter determination of the residue, and the rock dust content is calculated from the analysis of calcium and magnesium by atomic absorption.

The construction of 1144 nos. of piles, each 1.5 m diameter, bored-cast-in-situ type and varying in depths from 6.5 to 23m, has been completed as foundation for 26 piers of 548 m long aqueduct across Orsang river to carry 1128 m3 water of Narmada Main Canal of the Sardar Sarovar Project in Gujarat. These piles are socketed 1.5 m into foundation grade rockmass. The portal system of 44 nos. of piles and pile cap at the top for each pier is analyzed considering the portal fixed at bottom of piles. The borings for pile shaft were done deploying reverse mud circulation rigs and also by conventional chiseling and bailing operations. Besides vertical loading tests and lateral loading test on piles, dynamic tests such as low strain integrity testing on 290 piles and high strain pile testing on 17 piles were also conducted. The results indicated that (a) the settlement/ displacement are much less than the prescribed limits (b) good quality of concrete (c) piles are firmly socketed and (d) piles have adequate structural capacity to withstand the design load.

"This paper investigates the conditions leading to the indefinite termination of production in four critical primary panels at an underground coal mining operation, the observed shortcomings in the mining approach, and the proposed strategy to mine through the affected panels. Initial assessment of the abandoned panel conditions indicated time-dependent strata failure,(i.e. bolted roof failure overrunning intersections), which occurred from mere minutes to up to four weeks post-production, with and without prior warning of failure. This prompted the constant re-supporting of back areas, which raised safety and productivity concerns. Investigation of the initial mining conditions revealed that the failures were due to a critical combination of factors, the chief of which was isolated horizontal stress. Other factors that were initially overlooked by the mine (i.e. influence of hydraulic stress, misinterpretation of borehole data), resulted in the conditions being described as abnormal. Remedial actions were determined, and in so doing, a new strategic approach was formulated to thoroughly address all failure concerns. The four panels were explicitly planned to serve as the main intake and return airways for the recently commissioned secondary ventilation shaft, as well as providing access to millions of tons in proven coal reserves. It is thus imperative to mine the panels. A feasibility study showed that the proposed strategy set for implementation would be financially viable. Today, mine backfilling has become an integral part of mining operations, both from a local and overall ground control point of view, and as regards mining techniques and environmental considerations. During the past decade, substantial research has been carried out to contribute to the better understanding of the mechanisms involved in mine backfill behaviour. This work involved analytical, experimental and numerical studies at different scales. Accordingly, this work has been aimed at developing backfill design guidelines for actual working conditions. Backfill design for deep mining conditions is complex and requires understanding of various elements. The most important of these elements are: backfill inherent strength parameters, backfill placement method, stope geometry and interaction between backfill and host rock. The mobilization of backfill strength parameters controls the backfill behaviour and thus, its failure mode. It is believed that the governing boundary conditions and backfill-rock interaction influence the backfill strength mobilization significantly. Accordingly, the interaction between backfill and host rock is an influential factor in overall backfill behaviour under applied loads. The focus of this research is to investigate the backfill-rock interaction, considering a nonlinear behaviour for both backfill and rock mass. Assuming typical stope geometry, the FLAC code was used to model the complex boundary condition associated with narrow vein mining conditions and to simulate the backfill behaviour. A comprehensive numerical study was conducted and the results obtained were compared against field observations. The analysis of findings provides qualitative results, which can be used for backfill design. The high resolution resistivity method (HRRM) is developed specifically for detecting underground cavities and tunnels. HRRM has a special feature in that it can recognize and cancel static shift, which makes it different &om the high density resistivity method (HDRM). In searching for various means for detecting underground cavities, we found that the detecting depth of the transient electromagnetic field method (EM) depends mainly on the measurement duration, not the loop area. In addition, TEM can also be used to locate the high-resistivity bodies. In order to use them for local working site conditions, we combine HRRM with TEM to become a combined electromagnetic method. Since the late 1980's this method has been used to locate abandoned mines and air passages and burning centers of mine fires with great success. This paper cites case studies for which this technique was successfully used.

El avance tecnológico en los sistemas de iniciación en voladura abarca desde el sistema convencional (Mecha de Seguridad y Fulminantes hasta el sistema de iniciación electrónica, donde a través de un control de vibraciones se controla la energía liberada en un disparo, optimizando la fragmentación y disminuyendo el daño a las paredes del pit. En ese sentido, el sistema de iniciación con detonadores electrónicos, fija con claridad los conceptos de precisión, flexibilidad y seguridad. Por ello, el presente trabajo señala el uso de detonadores electrónicos por la Sociedad Minera Cerro Verde con la finalidad de evaluar sus resultados en seguridad, precisión, fragmentación, vibraciones, y control de daño a las paredes de la mina. Los resultados fueron óptimos -en tanto mejoró la fragmentación, el proceso de carguío y se incrementó el flujo en chancado primario.

Australia is not capitalizing on the raw gems and precious minerals that it produces in abundance. In particular, there is an unrealised value for diamonds due to lack of processing after mining. Australia could enhance the value of its raw jewellery products by developing and integrated jewellery industry. For instance, initiation of a diamond industry would require training programmes to educate people in the requisite skills, such as diamond sorting, cleaving, sawing, bruting and polishing. Equally important would be the training of people in design jewellery, manufacturing, and appropriate diamond grading and sales techniques. Future technological advances in diamond processing will decide where the major diamond processing centres of the world will be. Australia, for a relatively small investment, could develop a highly productive diamond processing capacity using the new technology available. Australia's geographical position, and advanced banking and communication facilities provide the potential for this country to become a major trading centre for diamonds. An experimental study has been made of the possible mechanisms for foam stability in the system CaO-SiO2-Cr2O3, where Cr2O3is the foaming agent. The degree of lowering of surface tension by Cr2O3 was determined at 1600 "C for high -silica melts. Measurements were also made of foam stability under standardized conditions. The results of the two sets of measurements then were correlated by applying the Gibbs and Marangoni theories of film elasticity. It was demonstrated that the Marangoni elasticity effect is probably the largest single contributor to foam stability, although the high uiscosity of' silicate melts makes some contribution in controlling the rate of drainage of liquid from bubble lamellae. ThE tendency of metallurgical slags to foam has frequently been observed during steel-refining operations. In the open-hearth furnace,this tendency is considered undesirable because it slows down the rate of heat transfer from the burners to the molten-metal bath. On the other hand, it is sometimes desirable to have a "foamy" slag in the basic oxygen converter.' A more effective blanket over the steel bath is made by a "foamy" slag, and loss in yield of metal due to splashing is minimized. In addition, a flush slag can be removed more easily in this condition. Since slag-foaming problems in the field have been attacked largely on an empirical basis, it appeared desirable to obtain a better basic understanding of the mechanism of foam stability. The experimental work was directed almost entirely toward the behavior of Cr2O3 as the foaming agent in CaO-SiO,-Cr2O3 melts. In the first stage of the investigation, the degree of lowering of surface tension by Cr2O3 was determined at 1600°C. The second stage consisted of measuring foam stabilities under standardized conditions. The two sets of experimental results then were correlated by applying various theories of foam stability. For convenience in interpreting the surface-tension and foam-stability results reported here, a portion of the CaO-SiO2-Cr2O3 phase diagram2 is reproduced in Fig. 1. EXPERIMENTAL 1) Surface-Tension Measurements. Very little information is available in the literature on the lowering of surface tension of slags by foaming agents. Kozakevitch 3 mentioned that the addition of 1.5 pct Cr2O3 lowered the surface tension of FeO slightly. In another system, some data on the lowering of surface tension of foaming slags by P2O5 were reported by Cooper and Kitchener.4 The technique used for the surface-tension measurements was the maximum bubble-pressure method,' using a single tube immersed to various depths in the melt. This method has been used extensively in high-temperature systems, such as in liquid metals, slags, and glasses.6,7 It has the advantage that the contact angle between the liquid and the tube material need not be known.
