Durante a solidificação de ligas metálicas, o produto fundido se contrai, o qual provoca o surgimento de espaçamentos vazios na interface metal/molde chamados de “gaps”. Estes gaps causam o aumento da resistência térmica influenciando em toda a cinética da solidificação. A transferência de calor durante a solidificação depende do conhecido parâmetro chamado de coeficiente global de transferência de calor ( hg). Este parâmetro é representado pela equação do tipo: hg =C.t-n, a qual indica que a eficiência térmica na interface metal/molde decai com o tempo. Muitos parâmetros podem influenciar o coeficiente global de transferência de calor (hg), neste estudo, os percentuais de Sn em ligas do sistema Al-Sn são analisados (10,20,30 e 40%Sn). Portanto, o principal objetivo deste estudo é propor uma relação matemática que descreva, para o sistema Al-Sn, a evolução hg em função do teor de Sn. Coal bumps are brittle, violent failures associated with high stresses and competent host strata. To study bump mechanisms, conditions in the vicinity of a deep longwall mining face in bump-prone strata were monitored using three discrete systems. First, a microseismic monitoring network recorded mining-induced seismic events throughout the mine and surrounding strata. Second, pressure variations and distributions on the longwall shield legs across the face were recorded. Last, tomography surveys imaged seismic transmission properties ahead of the face. Results from the three systems were correlated in an effort to increase understanding of mining-induced stress redistribution and bump potential. An initial, one-week study showed that the correlation between averaged tomogram values and seismically active areas had a coefficient of correlation (R) of 0.89. Further results of these studies demonstrate that the tomography system is capable of imaging heavy shield-leg loading and bump-prone conditions prior to them disrupting the face operations.

"The Iron Ore Company of Canada (IOC) operations in Labrador and Quebec, in Canada, is among the largest openpit mining complexes on a world wide basis. Since the 1981-82 recession, IOC has embarked on a comprehensive cost reduction and productivity improvement program in order to survive in the world iron ore market.This paper will outline the approach used in prioritizing the cost reduction items.IntroductionMuch of the mining industry in North America is in a crisis state. Most producers are operating at production levels well below capacity, some have been merged or sold, while others have been mothballed or closed permanently. For many of us still operating, the future is uncertain. Despite the many cutbacks and closures, there is still an abundant supply of minerals in the world market and there is almost no hope for any relief on price pressures on most mineral commodities in the near future. The Iron Ore Company of Canada (IOC) operates an iron ore mine, a concentrator and a pellet plant known as the Carol Project located in Labrador City, Newfoundland. This concentrator and the pellet plant have the annual capacity to produce 20 million and 10 million tons respectively. A company owned and operated railway links this operation with the dock terminal facilities in Sept-Iles, Quebec.In the past decade the Iron Ore Company of Canada has been one of the largest producers of iron ore products in the world. Its pellets and concentrates as well as natural ores were sold in North America, Europe and the Far East. In 1981-82, sales, particularly in North America, went into a serious decline. For almost 30 years, the gospel IOC preached to employees was ""production, production!"" There were many innovations, and millions of dollars were spent on the biggest and best equipment, on research and development, on training and developing employees."

Kidd Mine in Northern Ontario is now producing from Stage 1 of the Mine D expansion project ? mining between 2100 m and 2700 m below surface. Planning for Stage 2 of the Mine D project is already well advanced and will see the mine extended potentially to 3100 m below the surface. To ensure adequate ventilation is maintained at such depths, two large axial fans have been installed on the 6000 Level (1800 m below surface) as exhaust booster fans to operate in series with the surface exhaust fans. The Kidd Mine 6000 Level Booster Fans are a unique installation with unique and often unexpected challenges. These challenges have been met and attacked through the combined efforts of mine and fan manufacturer personnel with a common focus.

The Gallinas Mountains are in northern Lincoln County and southern Torrance County, New Mexico, USA where a series of alkaline igneous bodies, including porphyritic latite, trachyte/syenite, andesite, and rhyolite laccoliths, flows, dikes, and plugs, have intruded Permian sedimentary rocks belonging to the Permian Abo, Yeso, and Glorieta Formations. A small amount of bastnaesite, a REE mineral, was recovered during processing for fluorite from the Gallinas Mountains. Four types of deposits are found in the Gallinas Mountains: epithermal REE-F veins, Cu-REE-F veins, REE-F breccia pipes and iron skarn deposits; all are associated with Tertiary alkaline to alkalic-calcic igneous rocks. Alteration includes brecciation, silicification, chloritization, and fenitization. District zonation is defined by Cu-REE-F (±Pb, Zn, Ag) veins that form center of the district, surrounded by REE-F veins. Carbonatites are inferred at depth by the presence of fenitization, carbonatization of the breccias, presence of REE and similarity of the intrusive rocks and mineralization to areas with known carbonatites.

In 2004, the engineers at the Deer Creek Mine located near Huntington, Utah initiated the ventilation planning to exploit a remote area of the mine?s reserves. This area was located under a mountain which would not allow for the incorporation of an additional shaft or portal access near the proposed longwall panels. With this constraint along with the desire to maintain a two entry gate road system and the expected condition of frequent coal wash outs a ventilation plan was established. Different options were examined that included; increasing the current exhaust fan power, adding another exhaust fan installation, converting the ventilation fans in the active portion of the mine to a forcing system, and modifying the ventilation system in the active area of the mine to a push-pull system. The push-pull ventilation system was ultimately selected. This paper details the design process of the ventilation system upgrade, the procurement process for the new fans, and the new fan startup testing.

"History can provide many answers with regard to what today’s mining industry looks like and how we got to where we are today. It has always been self-evident that safety has to be given the highest priority and, throughout history, many mine workers have been injured, become ill and have even sacrificed their lives due to the way in which attempts have been made to extract the ore, often due to ignorance of the dangers being faced. In more recent stages of history we have seen certain dangers being compensated by means of higher wages and bonus systems in order to have the work carried out: one example of this is when the rock heating method was employed and the men who first went underground to put out the fires that were burning, were paid extra. The working conditions, to which these people were exposed, with smoke-filled closed spaces, shortened their life expectancy considerably and today we can ask ourselves whether it is really possible to value these efforts just by higher wages. In all mines worldwide the working environment has been improved and many mining companies have a zero vision where work-related injuries and accidents are concerned. Despite this, incidents of varying severity still occur and a continuous improvement process and ongoing training is necessary in order to constantly minimise risks and improve the working environment. Atlas Copco takes this into account in all its development and we not only review our own production units but also the needs of our customers, with regard to the machinery that is produced in order to cater for customers’ safety and production objectives. Underground mining probably started at the beginning of the 11th century when people with modest tools tried to extract ores that were present in the bedrock. Methodology has developed enormously over the years with a strong focus on increased efficiency and higher production. In different parts of the world the development is driven forwards at different rates depending on which controlling factors are regarded as necessary. Political decisions, profit goals and productivity have partly controlled the development, but the greatest factor where improvement is concerned still remains with increased understanding of the totality. During more than 1000 years since underground mining has been conducted, all individuals at all levels have constantly improved their expertise and the human element has been of great importance with regard to the development that has been made, even though technology often occupies a leading role when we describe the improvements made."

Introduction Froth flotation is one of the most common unit engineering operations in use today. Its aim is to upgrade the quality of coal by removing ash/pyrite and separating selected minerals from undesired gangue materials. Flotation has been successfully practiced at the industrial scale for more than 50 years. Its use is increasing due to the ever decreasing feed grades of the coals and minerals being processed. Flotation has also shown itself to be a flexible process that lends itself well to many solid/solid separations. Thus, with surprisingly little equipment modification, separations can involve very different particle sizes and densities, and relative weight ratios of materials to be separated. In addition, the flotation process is economic, especially when compared to size reduction, its associated precursor process. Flotation also lends itself to continuous operations with a given equipment configuration. The operation must exhibit an ability to vary feed rate of solid to the process by as much as 50% without a total collapse of separating efficiency. In addition, the mechanical flotation cell is scaleable from 2.8 to 57 or 85 m3 (100 to 2000 or 3000 cu ft) with surprising ease relative to other unit engineering operations over the same relative size increase. The separating medium used is water. Most of the chemicals required - pH regulators, frothers, collectors, activators, and depressants - are all relatively inexpensive and common. They are not usually used in large quantities. Froth flotation is certainly one of the most versatile and forgiving unit operations in the chemical, mining, and agricultural industries. The problem with the industrial flotation process is that it is fairly easy to get reasonable results and relatively difficult to get excellent results. Why is it so difficult to fine tune the froth flotation process? There are some obvious reasons and a few not-so-obvious factors. The obvious category would certainly contain the tendency of natural feed materials (ores and raw coals) to have variable physical, metallurgical, and surface properties. This occurs even when special care is taken to minimize such differences with blending. There is another obvious reason for difficulty. An inherent broadness of the feed particle size range to flotation results from using any of the common industrial-scalefine grinding devices - ball-, rod-, or autogenous mills. Research has been done into the chemical reagent and equipment aspects of flotation. It has shown strong interactions (limitations) of chemical reagents and equipment on larger and smaller particles. The point is that current flotation practice works best on average- or medium-sized feed particles. The greater the amount of large or small particles, or of both large and small, the more difficult it is to achieve excellent flotation results. Other reasonably obvious factors include: • variations in mineral type and liberation sizes; • water chemistry variations such as those involving Ca", C03, or Fe", or various soluble metal cations; • the presence of stray organic materials such as returning soluble reagents or partially degraded reagents in reuse water; • the lack of reliable on-line instrumentation for monitoring and control; • frequent equipment malfunctions of all types; • excessive feed rates for installed plant capacity; • poor operator interaction with the process; and • poor reagent dosage control. There are less obvious, but real limitations to flotation. These are inherent in the design and operating characteristics of the most common cell design in use today - the mechanical flotation cell. Individual performance attributes of the chemical reagents used, along with their manner of use, also carry limitations. The bulk of this paper will deal with chemical reagents and their use. Chemical reagents In 1979, the author and his co-workers were asked to invent and implement, at the industrial scale, new flotation reagent chemistry. After reviewing some of the literature (Sutherland and Wark, 1955; Klassen and Mokrousov, 1959; M. Fuerstenau, 1962; D. Fuerstenau, 1976; and Leja, 1982), a series of carefully controlled plant scale tests were set up. These tests were designed to understand existing reagent scale-up from the laboratory to the plant. They were to quantify at the plant level the effect of some of the more important, controllable chemical reagent factors (frother and collector type, frother and collector dosage, pH effects). The Mouat mine, Nye, Mont., was reopened in 1953 by the American Chrome Co. under a Defense Minerals Production Administration contract. Operations were terminated in 1961 after completion of the contract. Mining methods employed during this period are described in detail, and cost data are presented by years for 1953 through 1959. Ultramafic rocks of the Stillwater complex in Montana contain the largest domestic resource of chromite, and the Mouat mine has been the largest producer. Mine reserves were estimated in 1960 to be about 4.4 million tons containing 22.5 percent Cr2O3. The chromite deposits occur as a series of overlapping bands or lenses roughly paralleling the steeply dipping layers of the complex. Only two of the chromite layers have proven to be of economic importance. One layer is 2 to 16 feet wide; the other is 3 to 8 feet wide. Shrinkage stoping was generally used throughout the mine, but various methods of ore breaking, stope drawing, chute construction, etc., were tested to improve output and lower costs. Long-hole stoping proved to have limited use. Breasting down benches, developed outward from the center of the stope with air-leg drills, was satisfactory only in wider stopes. At the close of operations, the company had standardized the use of lightweight stopers to advance a flat back by breaking from a centrally located face. Mining costs were reduced 47 percent during 7 years of operation.

Compliance with existing regulations is generally achieved through constraints in the blast design, or monitoring programs. Commonly, blast vibration and airblast signals are rated and compared by their maximum amplitude and the associated principal frequency. However, this data reduction limits the interpretation of the influence of varying blast design parameters on the vibration and airblast.

Automatic control of semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mills has often been considered complex. Recent experiences at Century Zinc (worldÆs second largest open pit zinc mine) refute this. Together with operating knowledge and appropriate control techniques high quality control is achievable. In this application model-based, constraint, and multiple output control were employed. The control was implemented using standard blocks in the plant DCS. The resulting overall control strategy fulfils the operating objectives and controls the mill with minimal operator involvement over 95 per cent of the time. Previous campaigns using expert systems and complex DCS based control have lacked durability. Their fall into disuse is briefly discussed.

This paper provides an account of the efforts undertaken to construct the Northeast Interceptor Sewer (NEIS) project, which is a portion of a much larger program in Los Angeles, California to upgrade the city’s wastewater facilities. The project consisted of a number of elements, including both soft ground and rock slurry wall shafts, drilled shafts, soft ground EPBM mining, rock TBM mining, large diameter pipe placement, and underground structure construction. The need to complete the project under strict schedule constraints, in addition to the challenges of underground construction in congested urban areas, necessitated the work be undertaken with the proper balance of state of the art equipment, and thoughtful planning. The paper will detail the means, methods, and equipment used on the project, as well as discuss several of the unforeseen conditions encountered during construction.

The Western Mining Training and Translation Center is a consortium of four universities devoted to developing educational and training projects to reduce the incidence/accident rates in the mining industry. The center consists of Missouri University of Science and Technology, Montana Tech, the Colorado School of Mines and the University of Utah. It is fully funded by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). The center manages 15 educational projects and one translation project. Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment (HIRA) for Small Mines is an educational project managed by the University of Utah. The objectives of this project are to identify critical mine hazards, assess risks; outline procedures to reduce accident/incident rates in small mines in the western United States and to train mine workers and super-visors on HIRA in each participating mine. To accomplish these objectives, the HIRA personnel visited 15 small mines in Utah, Colorado, Nevada and California. At these mines, most operators were employing independent contractors to perform several tasks ranging from drilling, blasting and mucking of rock at the work site to hauling ore to a processing plant. The operation of diesel-powered equipment was one of the major tasks performed by the contractors. This article presents three case studies in which contract workers performed a number of tasks with no reportable incidents but did so unsafely. It also highlights the training received by most contractors, the constraints imposed upon them and the safety hazards to which they are exposed most frequently.
