Despite two zones of known contamination, encountering a zone of loose cobbles and boulders in a matrix of flowing sand, some perched water tables and a flooded tunnel after 2 upstream safety plugs failed, the Contractor finished the work 33 days early and only 1.91% over his original bid.

This manual of practice is to be used in combination with the final reports for the study of spoil stability in the Eastern Coal Province. The manual applies the predictive matrices developed in the parent study for use in evaluating the stability of typical mine spoil slopes. The values of internal friction and pore pressure coefficient are derived for many varied slope conditions. The results can be used in conventional stability analysis equations to assist the mine operator or regulatory personnel in evaluating spoil stability from very limited information.

De Beers? Finsch diamond mine began operation in the 1960s as a surface project using the latest technology available. During the 1990s, the operation, located about 160 km (100 miles) west of Kimberley, South Africa, began its move as an underground mine. The earlier stages (Blocks 1, 2 and 3) of underground work at Finsch used open stope mining methods, also using the latest in technology. The mine began developing Block 4 in 2004. How-ever, studies on this level showed that block caving was a more efficient mining method than open stoping. It was during those studies that De Beers determined that Block 4 would be a good candidate for testing Sandvik?s automated truck haulage technology.

Ceremonies for the induction of four mining industry pioneers into the National Mining Hall of Fame will be held Saturday, Sept. 13, 2008 at the Charles F. Barber Pavilion of the Museum Convention Center in Leadville, CO. This will be the 21st Annual National Mining Museum and Induction Banquet. The four inductees are Lew Eklund, 76, Carrie Jane Billings Everson (1843-1914), ?Colonel? William C. Greene (1851-1911) and Arthur L. Hawkesworth (1860-1905). Lew Eklund founded Eklund Drilling that is now based in Elko, NV. He invented many designs that play a major role in today?s mining industry. His Cyclo Blower and various sampling devices he designed helped to revolutionize gold deposit exploration by allowing mining companies to effectively sample microscopic gold. Carrie Jane Billings Everson discovered and proved a method for bulk oil flotation concentration of mineral ores, the precursor to modern froth flotation methods of minerals concentration. She patented her process in 1886. In the early 1890s, coworkers built and operated demonstration plants incorporating her bulk oil flotation process. ?Colonel? William C. Greene was responsible for the development of the great copper mining properties of Cananea, Mexico. In seven years, he went from ragged cattleman and adventurer to the greatest captain of industry the borderlands have ever seen. Arthur L. Hawkesworth was a master mechanic for Anaconda Copper. He invented the detachable drill bit. His invention generated tremendous savings for the mining industry in time, in dollars and in safer operating conditions underground. His bit?s long lasting contribution to improved mine economics is immeasurable. The 21st Annual National Mining Museum and Induction Banquet will begin with an open house and reception at 5:30 p.m. followed by the dinner and program at 7 p.m. The inductions will bring to 201 the number of mining ?greats? whose engraved photographs and biographical sketches are installed in the National Mining Hall of Fame.

This paper on coarse particle recovery (CPR) summarizes a process to capture coarse particles that are not recoverable by regular flotation. Several porphyry copper operations in the world operate analogous circuits that recover non-floated copper from tailings; however, the case presented here is unique in that extensive underlying test work has allowed the authors to elucidate some fundamental principles behind recovery enhancement. This paper discusses an overview of the flowsheet that is proposed to Minera Escondida Ltda., the nature of copper in the feed to the CPR circuit, and the various unit operations within the recovery circuit.

Soldier pile and lagging is a conventional means of temporary excavation shoring. Timber lagging design has traditionally been based upon the designer's experience or empirical rules. One such method is the Goldberg Zoino chart used by the Federal Highway Administration. Most of these methods restrict the designer to a consistent soil profile, certain pile spacing, construction grade timber lagging, and limited depth. The methods do not take into account surcharge loads or a variety of other factors that could arise. A designer working outside of ordinary circumstances with unusual loads, varying soil conditions, or alternate lagging materials has difficulty estimating lateral earth pressures. In rigid earth retention systems, lateral earth pressure is generally assumed to be constant along the length of the wall. In soldier pile and lagging systems, the lagging is often considerably less stiff than the steel soldier piles. As the lagging deflects, the soil tends to bridge between the stiffer elements resulting in a lower pressure on the lagging. Several previously published methods by others for determining this reduced pressure are summarized and discussed. These methods typically consist of using a portion of the active earth pressure in several different pressure distributions. A simple theoretical model is presented for determination of lateral earth pressures on wood lagging. The model is based on a three-dimensional "silo" shaped sliding wedge analysis. Results of the model are compared with other published methods. The model compares well with these methods which cover the normal spectrum of design situations. In addition, the model can be used to estimate lateral earth pressures outside typical situations.

Portland cement is primarily used to solidify backfill in underground mine workings and it represents a major cost in mining operations. CANMET-MMSL has invented an alternative binder technology that does not contain any amount of Portland cement and is made using waste materials, such as development rock and smelter slag. The technology has been successfully tested with many types of base metal and ferrous slag. Research conducted in collaboration with several mining operations in Canada has shown that the CANMET-MMSL binder has considerable potential as a replacement for Portland cement in mine backfill. An integral part of the overall mining operation, backfill is used for two main purposes: safety and environmental remediation. Depending on the mining method used, backfill provides a working surface, stabilizes stope and pillar walls, as well as the surrounding rock mass, and controls caving of stope backs. There are several benefits associated with the replacement of Portland cement in backfill, including reductions in (i) the footprint by placement of slag waste underground, (ii) the environmental effects and long term liability resulting from disposal and containment of slag waste on surface such as acid rock drainage, (iii) GHG as a result of reduced Portland cement usage (the production of 1 ton of Portland cement produces 1 ton of GHG), and (iv) the significant costs associated with reduced Portland cement usage.

"To adopt new technology advancement in Steel Plant, there is a requirement of shifting of operation process from Coke Wet Quenching (CWQ) to Coke Dry Quenching (CDQ). New CDQ chamber foundation with deep basement and underground conveyor tunnel are to be constructed in an operating plant where heavy foundations and structures are located in close proximity. Furthermore, the existing CWQ system will be in operation during new underground construction and erection. Challenges to deep excavation of tunnel and chamber foundation consist of non-uniform ground condition, prevent washing out of soil from bottom of existing foundations, stability of existing nearby structures, presence of large number of underground utilities, ensuring safe underground workplace to construction resources engaged in new construction work along with project schedule and budget constraints. A combination methods involving use of soil nailing, soil grouting, contiguous bored pile and micro pile had been adopted for protection of excavation sides as well as existing structures. Each side of excavation in different stretches were analysed during design as well as construction stages. The use of combination of all techniques in a single brown field project in context of the nature of site constraints and safety issues made this a unique project.INTRODUCTIONSteel Industry is one of the backbones of industrial growth of any developing country like India. Due to increasing land prices most of the steel plants in India are expanding within their existing plant facilities. In addition to that, there is demand of adoption of new technology for future expansion projects to set new benchmarks with global standards.The property owner had earlier installed a Coke Wet Quenching (CWQ) for their Coke Plant. Now, there is a requirement from process department to proceed with Coke Dry Quenching (CDQ). To facilitate the CDQ within the existing CWQ which will be in operation is the main challenge for the property owner. The second challenge is the limited space for underground construction and subsequent equipment erection within the stipulated time frame.From a geotechnical prospective, the project team had uncertainty and reservations in their mind about the construction methodology. Therefore, the role of three “C”: ‘Consultant’-‘Client’- ‘Contractor’ and their combining brainstorming is essential to freeze a working plan for achieving the goal. In this paper, only the excavation support systems for underground foundation structures have been highlighted in the context of solving geotechnical problems."

The ability to precondition (weaken) a rock mass to enhance caving (cavability and fragmentation) is becoming increasingly important, as more potential caving deposits are in stronger rock masses, and at greater depth. This paper discusses a full-scale blast preconditioning experiment conducted at the Cadia East mining operation, including quantification of visible and microscale blast damage. From a cave mining perspective, the objectives of the experiment were to quantify the effect of confined blasting on rock mass characteristics relevant to enhanced caving, and to provide calibration data for the purpose of numerically modelling alternative blast preconditioning designs.The experiment was located approximately 360 m below surface, and consisted of two f165 mm blastholes (60 m vertical holes) and eight HQ diamond drill monitoring holes (35 m horizontal holes). The diamond drill holes were used to sample the rock mass before and after the blast at varying distances from the blastholes. Rock mass blast damage was quantified both visually using core logging, and on a microscale using LABYRINTH® statistical analysis of X-ray microtomography data. Results from the experiment indicated four major findings:on the visible scale, the experiment indicated a 147 per cent increase in the number of hairline cracks within 5 m (p value = 0.015), but no change in geotechnical logging parametersmicroscale tomography of intact rock samples indicate significant localised intact rock damage up to 4 m from the blasthole (p = 0.007)preliminary point load test results indicate that blast damage results in a significant reduction in intact rock strength (p = 0.050)the significant increase in porosity and microfracture size associated with damage provides a mechanism for reduced intact rock strength due to confined blasting.CITATION:Stewart, P C, Brunton, I, Francis, D and Chitombo, G, 2016. LTl’s MapStar LPS (laser positioning system) utilize both tripod mounted and hand held reflectorless distance meters. These are eye safe, easy-to-use, and specifically designed to endure the harsh environment characteristic to the mining, quarry and explosives industries. Survey data collected by the systems is digitally stored in a ruggedized data collector and then processed with a specialized, interactive software program, which can be run on any standard PC. Win Prof, the Windows-based analytical software package is used to reduce the data for generating bench face profiles, surfaces, volumes, estimating true burdens and mining ratio calculations. In addition, the software has many other built-in routines to calculate powder factors, toe shear, to map structural contacts and to predict the flyrock potential based on the Burden to Energy ratios. An extensive, built-in library of explosive’s data facilitates these calculations. It will also conform automatically to user-specified minimum and/or maximum burden in relation to the explosive energy, hole diameter and bench geometry - for both vertical and inclined holes. Numerical data can be represented in 2D or 3D to emphasize the hole-burden-face relationships.In this workshop, the MapStar LPS instruments and Win Prof analytical software will be thoroughly demonstrated. Demonstrations include equipment configuration, typical field setups and several effective survey procedures, including processing of some sample data.

The Imperial Smelting Process for the simultaneous production of zinc and lead is probably regarded by the ecologist as a necessary evil with the benefits of its products marginally outweighing the adverse effects of its operation. The purpose of the paper is to examine the environmental impact of the process and to provide information which will demonstrate that the process has considerable indirect environmental benefits and that success is being achieved in reducing direct pollution of the environment by the process. About 12 per cent of the world's zinc and seven per cent of its lead is produced by the process. This proportion will increase with the construction of a new smelter in China. After a brief description of the process the paper considers one of its principal advantages, its ability to treat bulk concentrates. The production of these at the mine can have a number of environmental benefits. Less comminution may be required to separate the metals from the gangue than is needed to separate them from each other; recoveries can be improved in flotation resulting in cleaner tailings dams, less power demand and reduced consumption of potentially hazardous reagents. Simplification of mining and above ground ore handling may also give significant benefits . The process is a considerable consumer of secondary materials such as galvanisers' ashes, copper smelter dusts and materials containing zinc and lead derived from steel plant dusts. The majority of these materials are fed to the blast furnace after hot briquetting. The consumption of secondary materials is a considerable environmental benefit since otherwise they would require to be dumped in secure land-fill sites. The operation of the process itself continues to be subjected to increasingly stringent environmental standards of which examples are provided. Details are provided of lead emissions at Avonmouth showing considerable success in reducing these while increasing production. The slag from the process continues to find many useful applications.

The South Nottinghamshire Area has not been greatly troubled by spontaneous combustion until the last few years, during which the Blackshale Seam has been developed and exploited. The problem was first encountered at a colliery which was heavily preoccupied with a major reconstruction scheme, and with the sudden appearance of a completely new hazard both men and management had to adapt themselves very quickly to meet the situation. The paper contributed to the Symposium by the South Nottinghamshire Area illustrates the problems by reference to actual incidents, and shows how the lessons learned from them have been applied to the shaping of future policy on the avoidance and treatment of spontaneous combustion.

Stope support systems, typically consisting of props and packs, are used extensively in the gold and platinum mining industry to stabilize the rock mass in the excavation vicinity and to reduce the hazard associated with rockfalls and rockbursts. The design of stope support systems was historically based predominantly on past experience and practices, and cost considerations. The recent development of a new and improved support design methodology, has led to the potential for significant increases in worker safety and support cost savings. This paper reviews some of the fundamental rock mass and support criteria that form the basis of the improved support design methodology. The considered design criteria are the height of potential fall; quasi-static stope closure rates; dynamic stope closure rates; compressive hangingwall stresses; discontinuity spacing, orientation and interface properties; effect of support length (stoping width); effect of compression rate; consistency of support performance; a real coverage; support spacing; and zone of support influence. The proposed support design methodology combines both the zone of influence and key block stability theories, resulting in optimized support systems for rockfall and rockburst conditions. The site-specific methodology consists of two stages: (i) a tributary area analysis, and (ii) a zone of support influence and a stability analysis, considering hangingwall failure due to buckling, shear and block rotation, which gives maximum safe spacing of individual support units. The methodology is suitable for designing support systems for both blocky hangingwalls and hangingwalls fragmented by face-parallel extension and shear fractures.

Coal carbonization, the basis of a major industry, consists in heating coal in the absence of air at various temperatures (ranging from 500° to 1,000° C.) that are selected according to the kind of products desired. During this treatment, the complex organic substances that comprise the major part of the coal are converted into several useful products that are quite different from the original material. The principal products of coal carbonization or distillation are coke and gas. These products, as well as others of which lower yields are obtained (light oil, tar, and ammonia), occupy an important place in present-day commerce and civilization. This paper is concerned with the composition of the tar and light oil, which, as complex mixtures of organic compounds, are the source of many important dyes, inter-mediates, medicinals, resins, etc. The volatile products obtained when bituminous coals are destructively distilled or carbonized are tar, aqueous liquor, and gas. These products vary in composition and properties, depending on the nature of the coal and the temperature and conditions of carbonization. The tar is a dark, rather thick and viscous liquid at ordinary temperatures, becoming semisolid when cooled to the freezing point of water. The aqueous liquor (chiefly water) contains several inorganic substances and certain organic compounds, which, because of their solubility characteristics, have been extracted from the tar. The carbonization gases consist chiefly of carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, hydrogen, hydrogen sulphide, ammonia, methane, ethane, ethylene, and several hydrocarbons of higher molecular weight. The hydrocarbons of higher molecular weight (benzene, toluene, xylene, etc.) may be re-moved as liquids from the gas by suitable means. This liquid and the first fractions obtained on distilling the tar are known as light oil.

With increasing depth, stresses and stress phenomena are becoming more important considerations in Australian coal mining.A large number of compressive and tensile strength tests was made on coal and rock cubes cut from samples taken in various Australian collieries. In addition, an empirical impact strength test was carriedout on fragments of the same samples, to obtain a correlation with compressive strength.In one colliery, flat-jack measurements were taken to assess stresses in coal ribs and in the roof.INTRODUCTIONBy world standards, some of the New South Wales collieries are approaching depths of cover considered a maximum for bord and pillar the normal Australian coal mining method. Several South Coast collieries are winning coal at depths of about 1500 ft., and future operations are being planned at deeper cover. Some areas of these deep workings produce considerable quantities of seam gas.Phenomena associated with high stress and copious gas under pressure in the seam violent phenoma presenting a danger and a nuisance in mine working - have occasionally occurred, and the phenomena are being investigated as a whole (Hargraves, 1958), and separately as a gas problem (Bolt and Innes, 1959; Hargraves, 1962) and as a stress problem. Durante la explotación de los niveles inferiores en la mina Yauliyacu, se generaron dudas sobre la ubicación de las concentraciones de esfuerzos y sus relaciones con los estallidos de roca. En este sentido, se instala un sistema microsísmico donde mediante el análisis de la microsismicidad se elaboró los estándares que permitieron reducir los incidentes por estallidos de roca presente, así como la frecuencia, magnitud y daños a las personas, y equipo e infraestructura de mina, debido a la energía liberada por los eventos microsísmicos. Por ello, el presente trabajo señala los beneficios del uso del sistema de análisis de microsismicidad como la actualización contínua de la zonificación minera de acuerdo a la concentración de esfuerzos, procediendo al reforzamiento del sostenimiento como medida de prevención.

Contract 240 of the Channel Tunnel Rail Link comprises construction of twin4.7 km long running tunnels through a densely populated area of East London. The tunnels were constructed by EPBM in Sands and Sandy Clays, passing 4.4 m below the existing London Underground tunnels, and at depths of 20–30m below ground level beneath the Great Eastern railway lines into London Liverpool Street and a series of railway bridges and hundreds of buildings. This paper describes how the project team managed the challenges relating to the issue of settlement: mitigating settlement effects, prioritising the structures to be assessed, controlling resource expenditure by incentives and flexible response to urgent work relating to unforeseen events such as ground collapse and discovery of unusual structures.

The distribution or the userul minerals or Tasmania is so closely connected with the geological structure of the island that it will be convenient to briefly recapitulate the principal ract or its geological history, before describing the ore and other deposits. In many cases these present features which are very puzzling in the absence of knowledge of the structure of the districts in which they are found and in all cases it is of benefit to mining engineers to be acquainted with the main facts of the geological·history of the regions in which they have to carry on operations. Moreover, in speculating as to the origin of lodes and other deposits, we have constantly to rerer to the crumplings or the earth's crust by mountain-making movements, and to the igneous rocks which have been thrust throngh the other strata, to explain the origin or the lode fissures, and this discussion cannot be carried on without knowledge of local geology.The oldest rock yet met with in Tasmania are of Archooan age, and consist of highly crystalline quartzites and micaceous schist. They are most extensively developed towards the western side ot the island, forming a belt parallel to the West Coast from South-West Cape to Cradle fountain; but they also crop out here and there to the west and northward of this belt, where the covering strata or later age have been denuded away. Though not seen in situ in the eastern part of the colony, the abundance or pebbles derived from this formation in the conglomerates of the coal measures shows that it must in those day have formed land surfaces there also, and makes it likely that the archooan strata exist at no great depth: below many of the beds of later age now occupying the surface. Lying unconfortably upon these highly metamorphic strata we find next an extensive series of subcrystalline metamorphic conglomerates, grits, sandstones, slates, and limestones,of Cambro-Silurian age. These are well seen in the Gordou River Basin, along the West Coast Range, aloug the North Coast, and in the goldfields of the north-eastern portion of the colony. They are much broken by later intrusive rocks, and covered by younger rormations, but the series is spread more or less over the whole island.
