STATISTICAL data on injuries and employment pertinent to metal mines and to their mills, and/or processing plants are presented in this Information Circular for the calendar year 1960. The information pertains to metal mines, as well as ore-dressing plants and primary nonferrous smelters, refineries and reduction plants, and their auxiliary works. These data are voluntarily submitted annually to the Bureau of Mines by the operators, and contribute greatly toward the promotion of safety in the mineral industries. The data presented are classified according to the principal mineral produced and include information on copper, iron, lead-zinc, gold-silver lode, gold placer, uranium-vanadium and miscellaneous metals. A breakdown of miscellaneous metals by commodities is shown in table 19, page 41. The data also relate to workers engaged in production, exploration, development, construction, and maintenance and repair work, as well as supervisory personnel and office- workers at the mine or plant site. "The Stillwater mine is a 3,000 tons/day platinum/palladium underground mine and flotation concentrator located in the Beartooth mountain range in south-central Montana. The site elevation is 5,000 feet above sea level providing a climate with pleasant summers and cold winters. The winters are particularly characterized by very strong winds.The mining methods at Stillwater had been variations of overhand cut-and-fill and some blast-hole stoping. Until construction of the paste back-fill plant, mine back-filling was being practiced using classified hydraulic sand-fill methods. Where higher strengths were necessary, cement was added to the hydraulic fill, however, excessive quantities were necessary due to significant losses with the water drainage from the comparatively low-density fill. There was a need for higher strength back-fill with reduced cement content to augment the hydraulic-fill process.In early 1998, Stillwater Mining Co. commissioned AGRA Simons (then H.A. Simons) in a joint venture with The Industrial Company, TIC, to design and construct a treatment facility to re-process the mill flotation tailing, incorporating the following process alternatives:Produce 100 tph of low strength paste with unconfined compressive strength of 25 to 50 psi,Produce 100 tph of high strength paste with unconfined compressive strength of 100 to 125 psi,Direct all of the excess mill tailing to the sand-fill plant,While no paste is being produced, pump all of the mill tailing to the sand-fill plant,While no paste is being produced and the sand-fill silos are full, direct the mill tailing to the tailing pond.The paste backfill plant was therefore to be designed to produce the two different types of backfill paste as well as have the function of being the distribution center for the mill process tailing .Moderate to high slump pastes would be required because of the comparatively long horizontal transport distances, up to 8,000 feet, and the requirement for a low angle of repose to fill the stope evenly without numerous discharge points."

We present a review of research and development for coal based clean energy systems aiming for zero emissions to the atmosphere. These systems can utilize all kinds of coal or other solid carbon sources such as tar sands as well as liquid hydrocarbons. The chemical energy of carbon is transferred to hydrogen and used in power generation, in fuel cells, or hydrogen combusting turbines. The waste products of these future power-generating systems are ash, sulfur compounds and CO2. We also summarize current and developing technologies for processing of CO2to produce mineral carbonates for permanent disposal, and associated byproducts.

The innovative Soil-Cement Mixing Wall Technique, developed independently in Japan, consists of mixing in-place soils with cement grout using multi-axis augers and mixing paddles to construct overlapping soil-cement columns. The applications of overlapped soil-cement columns include cutoff walls for groundwater control and structural diaphragm walls for excavation support. The special features of this technique include water tightness, versatile strength design, and efficient installation in subsurface materials varying from clayey soils to cobbles or soft rocks. Through the introduction of two recent subway projects in Japan, this paper presents the design parameters, construction procedure, quality control and performance of soil-cement wall for excavation support and groundwater control.

This paper reviews the potential hazards posed by the toxic fumes produced by detonating explosives in surface mining and construction operations. Blasting operations produce both toxic and nontoxic gaseous products; the toxic being mainly carbon monoxide (CO) and the oxides of nitrogen (NOx). The quantity of toxic gases produced by an explosive is affected by formulation, confinement, age of the explosive, and contamination of the explosive with water or drill cuttings, among others. Techniques to protect workers and the public from the potential hazards of explosive-related toxic fumes are discussed. These include: • Minimizing the quantity of toxic fumes produced. • Determining where the fumes may go so workers and neighbors can be moved out of harm’s way. • Preventing the fumes from moving towards workers and neighbors. • Monitoring the air near workers and neighbors so they can be relocated if fumes appear. • Ventilating structures or confined spaces until CO falls below a hazardous concentration.

Handling materials in underground mines continues to be a major safety problem. To help reduce materials-handling injuries, researchers at the Spokane Research Laboratory of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health are investigating those materials-handling tasks in underground mines that appear to generate a high number of injuries. Data from the Mine Safety and Health Administration for the years 1989-1999 were studied to find out if there were any trends in materials-handling accidents and if so, to determine what tasks were involved and the sources of injuries. Several underground coal and metal mines were visited to document innovative materials-handling technologies. Considerations for safety training and mechanization needs for continued reduction in materials-handling injuries are described.

In a previous paper the writer dealt -with the jasper bar formations and their relationship to the structural geology of older pre-Cambrian rocks in the goldfields districts of Western Australia (24). He has pointed out in this ahd other papers that jasper bars, or banded iron formations, banded hematite or ,magnetite quartzites, jaspilites and related banded ferruginous or non-ferruginous cherts, occur in abundan'ce in the Older Greenstone Series of Western Australia (22), (24), (26). They are considered to represent special forms of banded ferruginous sediments, and are usually fpund in the field interbedded with more or less metamorphosed pasaltic 01' andesitic lavas and tuffs, now amphibolites, together with occasional thin bands of normal pelitic sediments, which go to make up a large proportion of the Older Greenstones in thfs State (26).Great thicknesses of fiat-bedded ]:landed ferruginous cherts are also found associated with cherty' carbonate rocks; quartzites, shales and thin-bedded dolomite whicIi constit'ute the Nullagine (Pl'oterozoic) system in the northwest of Western Australia. In the Hamersley Range district these banded ferruginous chert beds are the hosts of important deposits of blue amphibole asbestos.In the paper mentioned above brief reference was> made to the importance, of geological structure in relation to economic geology, particularly in the goldfields regions of Western Australia, and it was shown that jasper bars may have an important role in the study of 'the structural geology of many of these regions. Of possibly more immediate economic importance is the part that these rocks play, both directly and indirectly, as host rocks for mineral deposits-the chief of Which are gold, iron ores, blue asbestos, and manganese ores. The blue asbestos bearing banded iron formations mentioned above are confined to the younger pre-Cambrian Nullagine formations. They have been described in detail elsewhere (23). In this paper it is proposed to discuss the economic geology of the jasper bars found in the older pre-Cambrian series.The jasper 'bars have in themselves little or no intrinsic value except perhaps some of the more highly coloured and banded varieties which may be utilised for ornamental and decorative purposes. Probably the best known of such varieties is the so-called "marble bar;" a belt of, strikingly coloured banded chert occurring just south and west of the famous town of that name (see Fig. 1t). This consists of a hard, very fine, even-grained rock with alternate individual stripes varying from the thickness of a sheet of paper up to an inch or more in width, and ranging in colour from clear white to yellow, from various shades of pink to brilliant...

Very few of those occupied in pursuits other than mining have any conception of the extent of boring operations that have been carried out on the gold and coal fields of Victoria, or of the valuable and definite knowledge obtainable by such means. The subject comprises various branches, which it will be necessary to describe in detail. The three main divisions are The Administrative, which includes all financial work and general management. The Professional, dealing with topographical and geological work necessary before any scheme of boring can be laid out, the preparation of plans, the inspection of cores obtained from bore holes, the examination of diamonds, etc. The Mechanical Branch, dealing with the drilling machinery, setting of diamonds, maintenance of stores, etc. In 1877, the Goverpment of Victoria decided to assist in prospecting the mineral resources of the colony by the aid of diamond drill boring, and for that purpose, a vote of £5,000 was passed, with which were purchased three diamond dulls, an American type being adopted.

Block caving methods, when operated under favourable rock mass conditions, can achieve higher production rates and lower operating costs than other various existing underground mining applications. For this reason, it has been considered the preferred method for the mining of deep and large orebodies in current and future operations around the world. One of the key aspects in the design of block caves is the selection of the production level layout, which, among other parameters, is based on the gravity flow characteristics of the caved rock. This is because gravity flow has a large impact on total ore recovery and the amount of dilution in a caving operation. Today, there are a number of computer based methods which aim to emulate the gravity flow pattern of the caved rock. In this paper, the authors present the development of FlowSiman improved model of gravity flow based on the cellular automaton approach, to estimate dilution entry, mixing and ore recovery. As part of the model development, flow simulations were conducted and subsequently compared to full-scale data collected at two mine sectors operated by Codelco Chile. The results indicate that by using proper calibrated parameters, good correlations between simulated and measured grades as well as dilution entry are obtained. The potential use of the numerical tool to evaluate drawpoint spacing in terms of recovery and dilution for block/panel caving operations is also presented.

The coal-mining districts of Washington are mainly situated west of the Cascade Mountains. The eastern boundaries of Whatcom, Skagit, Snohomish, King, Pierce, and Lewis Counties, shown in Figure 1, form the backbone of the mountain range. The mines are on the foothills of the slope and extend to the shores of Puget Sound in the central and northern portions. The subbituminous fields of Lewis, Thurston, and Cowlitz Counties extend into the valleys west of the mountains. The Roslyn field, a small but important area, Lies on the eastern slope of the Cascade Range. If western Washington is divided into three areas from north to south the bituminous coal fields and most of the active mining operations will be found largely in the central area. In the southern portion there are large areas of subbituminous coals of varying quality extending from Centralia to the Columbia River. In the northern portion, mining is at present practically restricted to one mine which is working a subbituminous bed near the city of Bellingham.

Every shift provides different conditions and challenges. Coping with stress is an important tool to maintain your physical and mental health. Now, back to mom. Studies on stress tell us that shifting your focus away from what is causing your stress increases your ability to cope. Counting to 10 is one method. Science proves mom right. The stress response We are born with the stress response, which is a survival instinct, sometimes called the "fight or flight" response. When approached by a tiger in the jungle, our ancestors would perceive danger and prepare to fight or run. The body prepares for the fight or flight response in a number of ways. The bloodstream brings extra glucose and oxygen (fuel) to the heart, the sense of pain is dulled, and memory and thinking improve. The pupils dilate for better vision and the lungs take in more oxygen, while heart rate and blood pressure increase. Body hairs become erect, as puffed-out hair makes an animal look bigger and more dangerous. Once the perceived danger is gone - we have run fast enough to get away from the tiger or won the fight - the body returns to normal functions. Unfortunately, civilization gives us too many opportunities to experience this response. If activated too often, it can create wear and tear on the body, which may lead to injury and illness. Chronic and traumatic stress There are two key types of stress: chronic stress and traumatic stress. Both types can cause both physical and psychological symptoms. Chronic stress builds up from the day-to-day hassles. Traumatic stress results from a traumatic event such as a natural disaster, a mine disaster, or the sudden death of a loved one. Chronic stress is associated with an increased risk of a number of health problems including heart disease, depression, back pain, and carpal tunnel syndrome. Traumatic stress may lead to post- traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), Miners may experience both chronic and traumatic stress in their work.

Over the last decade, Fenway Park has undergone annual improvements to modernize the facility for players and fans. These renovations include the Monster Seats, the Right Field Roof expansion, a new pavilion behind home plate, expansion of the Red Sox clubhouse, additional roof seating, and concourse improvements. Retrofitting the historic ballpark to bring it up to current standards required installation of foundations to support the new structural loads for each of the alteration projects. This required evaluation of existing conditions, and in many cases augmentation of the foundations at existing columns to accommodate the structural changes to the park. New foundations, generally consisting of drilled-in micropiles, were installed in numerous configurations and conditions. Since 2003, a total of 215 drilled-in micropiles have been installed to augment various columns around the park. The micropiles range in capacity between 40 and 70 tons and are installed through Fill and Organic Soils and embedded into the dense Glaciofluvial Sand and Gravel layer. Issues and learning related to the foundation augmentation include schedule constraints (work is typically conducted during the off-season and schedule is very aggressive), encountering old/abandoned utilities or foundations, ventilation of equipment, and management of spoils during micropile installation.

This paper on the relation of Granite and Sedimentary Contacts to Victorian Mining will, it is hoped, be of interest to members of the Institute.The broad fact that gold often occurs' at or near the junction of granite with sedimentary silurian or metamorphic rocks has been noted by some Victorian geologists, miners, and prospectors; but the fuq practical value -of the fact does not seem to have been fully realised by prospectors. Glancing at the Geological" Map of Victoria, one can see that many of our goldfields 'are situated at or near the junction of granite with Palceozoic sedimentary formations, and that some of our alluvial fields are on granite. Many prospectors are possessed of this knowledge but when prospecting a contact locality, they would be just as likely to confine their search for auriferous matrices to spots a quarter of a mile on the sedimentary side, as on the actual contact line of two formations.

The 56,000' (17 km) long San Vicente Aqueduct Pipeline tunnel is being constructed using precast concrete rings to act as preliminary ground support through two sections of the bored tunnel with lengths of 9,450' (2.9 km) and 33,700' (10.27 km).The six segment bolted trapezoidal ring was manufactured using a combination of steel fiber reinforced concrete and self compacting concrete in vertical moulds. This paper briefly describes the design and function of the segments, and reviews the development stages of the concrete mix, and the advantages and disadvantages of the adopted manufacturing method.

More than 220,000 diamonds have been found in the United States that range from microdiamonds to 40.42 carats in weight (Table 1). Some reports suggest diamonds weighing more than 100 carats have also been found in this country, although these reports have not been verified. The source of most of the diamonds in the United States is a group of kimberlite pipes, dikes and blows in the Colorado-Wyoming State Line district and a group of lamproite pipes in the Murfreesburo, AR area. Other areas where diamonds have been found include the Great Lakes region, the Pacific Coast and the southern Appalachian Mountains. The latter two regions are generally not considered favorable for diamond deposits. This is based on exploration models. They suggest commercial diamond deposits will be restricted to kimberlites emplaced in Archean cratons and to lamproites emplaced in Proterozoic mobile belts accreted to the cratons.

Economically favored Cr and Cu leaching out process from spent power plant fly ash (PPFA) had been investigated. PPFA, bearing of C, S, V, Ni, Cu and Cr, has been widely used as an assistant fuel in cement industry. Recent environmental regulation in S. Korea prohibits using PPFA as a fuel. Many researchers have also studied on extraction V and Ni from PPFA. Due to low concentration of V and Ni, 2% and 1%, respectively, economical and environmental friendly process could not be found. In this study, Cu and Cr have been removed in an economical way and which satisfied with KS Extraction Test. The rest unburned carbon, V2O5 and NiO2 in residue were found to be applicable for indoor and outdoor colored bricks or deodorant panel. Various parameters such as pH, lixiviates and time on leaching behavior were investigated in order to leach Cr and Cu remaining C, V and Ni. This paper reports on research on leaching pyrite in a germ-free system. The effects of mineral particle size, pulp potential and various oxidation agents on pyrite leaching were studied. The results indicated that a smaller mineral particle size leads to a higher leaching rate of pyrite. The optimum results were obtained with a mineral particle size of -0.037 mm. The pulp potential reflected the leaching process and an increasing pulp potential improved pyrite leaching. The leaching rate rapidly increased with the addition of oxidation agents such as Fe3+ and H2O2. However, the precipitate generated by ferric ion coated the surface of the pyrite and prevented further leaching.

Recently discovered Carboniferous bentonites are variable in charadeI and thickness, but being altered aeolian, ash-fall tuffs, they are probably extensive. Most are the Ca-montmorillonite type without the natural swelling characteristics of the Wyoming deposits, but their situation, thickness, and response to beneficiation through cation exchange may give them some potential as sources of future economic deposits.INTRODUCTIONLoughnan and See (1959) gave an account of bentonites and fuller's earth deposits of New South Wales. The most likely potential industrial sources were those occurring in the uppermost formations of the Newcastle and Singleton Coal Measures (Permian) in the Hunter Valley and deposited during epochs not marked by strong contemporary vulcanicity.One feature of the record of known occurrences at that time was the absence of bentonites from the thick volcanic sequences of the Carboniferous, but since this paper appeared, many bentonite beds have been discovered by the writer in the Carboniferous facies formerly known as the "Kuttung Series".The purpose of this contribution is to report briefly on the occurrence, genesis, mineralogy, and economic potential of these deposits which augment possible sources of bentonite near major industrial centres on the eastern seaboard.The potential world demand for bentonite would increase markedly with the trend to pelletization in the steel industry, if its use in this field became more general. The Bushveld platinum group metal deposits are two distinct, shallow-dipping stratiform tabular orebodies and strike for many hundreds of kilometres. Mining is extensive, with depths ranging from close-to-surface to 2 000 m. The mining method is a variation of planar open stoping. Pillars are widely used to support the openstopes. Little work has been done in the past to determine pillar strength and pillars have been designed using experience and formulae developed for other hard-rock mines. This has led to oversize pillars with consequential loss of ore or undersize pillars resulting in potential collapses or pillar bursts. This paper describes a back-analysis of pillar failures at Impala Platinum, just north of Rustenburg, and provides insights into pillar behaviour. Strength formulae are presented for Merensky Reef pillars at Impala. These formulae may be used cautiously on other platinum mines with similar geotechnical and geomechanical conditions.

Fire suppression systems are now recognised by both NFPA 502 and PIARC as legitimate tools for both life protection and asset protection. The effectiveness of these tools for life protection demands extremely rapid and accurate incident detection coupled with rapid response. This rapid response must be integrated with other emergency systems such as emergency ventilation. The March 2007 fatal Burnley Tunnel incident in Australia graphically illustrates the potential of effectively integrated fixed suppression systems to protect people from harm and save infrastructure from damage. Despite the raft of technology available in that instance to the operator it was the human operatorÆs ability to effectively control the emergency equipment and not the equipment itself which so positively influenced the threat to life and property.
