Tyre costs constitute 20-40 per cent of the operating cost of large haulage trucks, and tyre pressure maintenance is an important factor in minimizing costs.In the past, control over the hot (built-up) pressures of earthmover tyres has been inaccurate and inconsistent because it has not been possible, in a practical way, to measure the tyre's contained air temperature.A method for measuring this contained air temperature has now been devised using a bi-metallic probe thermometer inserted through the valve stem. Using these measurements in conjunction with a pressuretemperaturechart drawn up using the general gas equation, very accurate control over hot tyre pressures is now possible.

INTRODUCTION The wet shotcreting system utilizing steelfiber microsilica shotcrete with remote controlled equipment (The Robocon System) was developed in Norway 7-8 years ago. Norway was the natural origin for this system due to several factors. Almost 30% of all underground hydro-power stations in the world are located here. These projects created a need for high productivity shotcreting rigs for the rock support work in the caverns and in the connecting tunnels. During the period of 1976-1980, more than 1000 miles of tunnels were completed in Norway. Secondly, the utilization of microsilica in concrete was also developed in Norway due to a concentration of the world's ferroalloy p ants there. Robocon has presently placed approximately 110,000 m (150,000 cu. yds.) of this superior shotcrete, and has consequently an extensive experience in the shotcreting method. During a relatively short period of time (1975-1980), Robocon had a change from hand-operated, dry-process shotcrete to remote-controlled, wet-process shotcreting, because of improved productivity, reduced rebound, safer and cleaner working conditions. The introduction of microsilica and water-reducing admixture made it possible to produce wet-process shotcrete of high strength.

"This study sought to identify changes in continuous mining machine (CMM) operators’ risk perception and risk behaviors as a result of adding a proximity detection system (PDS) into their environment. To accomplish this research task, 9 CMM operators from 5 locations were interviewed. Interviews were thematically analyzed for constructs including patterns in risk perception and behavior before and after PDS integration and the process of adapting to the PDS. Operators discussed standing in the red zone less than they did before using the PDS; however, they also discussed other risky decisions they made while learning how to operate their CMM with the PDS technology such as “cheating” the technology and working faster to meet production goals. The process of relearning job tasks with technology and unintended behaviors as a result of that relearning process need to be taken into account when introducing new technology into the mine environment. The study results show an in-depth view of mine workers’ perspectives and how their job tasks and environment could be or are affected when learning how to use new technology that are relevant to companies and mine operators when introducing new technology into the mine environment. INTRODUCTION Established “red zones” can help prevent striking and pinning incidents by providing guidance to continuous mining machine (CMM) operators about where they should stand and not stand while operating a CMM. Although red zones influence operator placement positions, these guidelines are not foolproof safety mechanisms. Depending on the job task and circumstances of the mine environment, a CMM operator may unintentionally or intentionally stand in a red zone. For example, CMM operators may work in close proximity to their CMM for better visual attention cues and the ability to work at a higher rate of production [1-3]. To further enhance protection and prevent collisions between vehicles and mine workers, a proximity detection system (PDS) was developed for the industry. The PDS determines an individual’s position relative to a specific piece of machinery, issues visual and/or audible warnings to the mine worker to change positions, and, if necessary, disables machine motion [4]. The introduction of new technology within other sectors has been identified as a factor that influences work decisions. Specifically, previous research demonstrates that when technology debuts there can be an initial intrinsic risk perceived among users about how the technology will interact with their current environment and behaviors; however, these ambiguities, including the possible risks and benefits, are seldom studied [5]. Some research suggests that the constant presence of technology can disrupt situation awareness and decision-making capabilities by increasing worker responsibilities and worker cognitive demands [6-8]. Further, if workers’ perceived risks both with and without technology are misjudged, unsafe decisions that result in human error and injury may be more likely [9-11]. Although these statements are provided within a broad contextual framework, they support the need to study how technology is perceived among end users in their own environment. Because research about technological impact on worker behaviors has suggested both positive and negative consequences of technology, this issue is worth addressing in the mining industry. Specifically, research has not determined whether CMM operators view their placement choices in the red zone as safe or risky and what effect PDS technology has, if any, on risk perception and subsequent risk behavior."

The following observations on the mineral composition of the lead-zinc ores at Captain's Flat, New South Wales, are based upon the examination of a collection of specimens made during a brief visit to the mine in January, 1942, in conjunction with earlier studies of specimens and mill products, which have 'been the subject of various Mineragraphic Reports, Captain's Flat is about 35 miles south of Canberra, and is connected with the main line from Goulburn to Bombala by a branch line to Bungendore, 23 miles away from the mine.The geology of the mine has been described by Kenny and Mulholland2 and by Harper.3 The country consists of Silurian sediments, which have been invaded by a composite sill of quartz-felspar-porphyry. Both sediments and sill have been folded gently, the axial lines of the folds trending north and south. In the vicinity of the orebodies the folds are steeper, and thru,st faults are associated with the anticlines. The intense compression and shearing that accompanied the faulting has converted the adjacent porphyry to schist. The Captain's Flat orebodies occur along such a zone of shearing and faulting, on the eastern limb of a steep, north-pitching anticline. At their southern end the orebodies are enclosed in the slates underlying the porphyry, but the northerly pitch of the fold carries the slate to greater depth in the northern part of the mine, where the orebody lies beween schistose porphyry on the hanging wall and massive porphyry in the footwall.THE OREBODIESThe orebodies occur along a N.-S. strike length of 4,200 ft., and from the point of view of mining, fall into three sections: the Elliot's Section to the north, the Central Section, and the Keating's Section to the south. The Keating's Section is separated from the Central Section by 500-600 ft. of mineralised ground of so low a grade as' to be called barren, and is offset about 125 ft. to the 'east of the Central body by an oblique fault striking N.300E. Chalcopyrite concentrate was combusted in oxygen-nitrogen atmospheres, the composition of which ranged from 1-100 per cent oxygen. Factors studied included particle size, experimental temperature and oxygen concentration. The study was assisted by chemical and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis and temperature measurements of single particles. Size reduction occurring after melting was found to have a major effect on the overall reaction time. Thus time to attain ignition was largely determined by the original particle size, whereas combustion time was independent of this factor. For particles larger than 40 I'm in air the time to attain ignition predominated. The maximum temperatures measured for single particles were the result of pyrite present in the concentrate. Chalcopyrite did not attain thesame temperatures. Vaporization, either as CU(g) or CuO(g) lImited the temperature. Maximum temperatures measured for single particles of pyrite ranged from 1610°C in 14 per cent oxygen to 2360°C in 100 per cent oxygen (both at 700°C). Measured temperatures were compared with those calculated from a diffusion-based model.

The decrease in quality of Australian iron ore, coupled with the demand for more efficient energy use, necessitates closer monitoring and optimisation of process conditions for iron ore sinter production. Sinter properties are correlated with the mineralogical content and traditionally, quality control has relied on methods such as Fe2+ determination, point counting via optical microscopy and automated electron beam techniques such as QEMSCAN; these can have a typical turnaround time of several days between sampling and reporting of results. As well, there is additional uncertainty around quantifying some of the complex mineralogical phases in sinter such as silico-ferrite of calcium and aluminium (SFCA) and SFCA-I, which are key phases influencing sinter quality. There is a clear need for the implementation of alternative analytical methodologies that offer a turnaround in hours or even minutes to provide information to accurately maintain production conditions.X-ray diffraction (XRD) is a technique widely used for the quantitative mineralogical phase analysis (QPA) of ores and processed materials in the iron ore industry. Partial least squares regression (PLSR) analysis methods have recently been suggested as an indicator of sinter Fe2+ content from powder XRD data without the need for rigorous and often time-consuming mineralogical analysis by the operator. In this study we provide results from the implementation of PLSR to predict the strength of iron ore sinter. Results are sourced from a well-constrained data set comprising strength properties (as quantified by a tumble index (TI)) from a series of compact laboratory test samples. La unidad minera Tintaya al igual que la Unidad Minera Antapaccay, son las operaciones de la división Perú de Xstrata Copper dedicados a la producción y comercialización de concentrado y cátodos de cobre. Sin embargo, la mina está en su última etapa de vida. En este sentido, surge el proyecto de integración de la unidad Antapaccay, donde se busca prolongar la vida útil de la mina y por consiguiente, el de la actividad económica minera en la provincia de Espinar. Por ello, el presente trabajo, describe los efectos de esta expansión de la explotación minera a través de la Unidad Minera Antapaccay que utiliza las instalaciones de Tintaya, manteniendo los planes de inversión social y el desarrollo económico local y regional.

A 24,300 tonnes per year state of the art Silicon smelter is being constructed for Barrack Silicon Pty Ltd at Kemerton, 20 kilometres north of the City of Bunbury in Western Australia. The plant is designed for the reduction of high purity quartzite lump to metallic silicon in two 27MVa Demag submerged arc electric furnaces. The primary reductant, a high purity charcoal, will be manufactured at the plant from locally sourced jarrah wood waste (Eucalyptus Marginata). "The ninth yearly National Safety Competition covering the calendar year 1933, conducted by the United States Bureau of Mines, w participated in by 332 mines and quarries situated in 35 States. Enrollment represented as increase of 10 plants over 1932, and one addition was made to the number of States represented.The primary purpose of the United. States Bureau of Mines in conducting the contest is to promote safety in United States mineral industries. This purpose is accomplished directly through the efforts of the competing companies and their employees to win first place in the competition and thereupon receive recognition on a national scale for their achievement the purpose is accomplished indirectly through studies by the United States Bureau of Mines of the facts contained in the accident reports the competing companies furnish to enable the Bureau to compute the accident rates that are the basis for determining the winners of the contest.The statistics which constitute the basis for determining the winning companies and the relative standing of all companies are prepared uniformly without regard to the States in which the companies operate, or to differences in classes of accidents covered by State laws relating to compensation for injuries resulting, from industrial accidents.Bronze trophies, known as 'Sentinels of Safety', which were provided by The Explosives Engineer magazine to be awarded annually by the Bureau of Mines, were presented to five companies in the contest of 1933, each company having established the best accident-prevention record within one of the five classes into which all companies were divided, namely, anthracite-mining companies, bituminous-coal-mining companies, metal-mining companies, operators of nonmetallic-mineral mines other than coal mines, and quarries or opencut mines. The trophies are awarded for 1 year and are then transferred to the winners of the succeeding year's contest.The trophy for bituincus-coal mines was won by a company in Wyoming. A company in Tennessee won the trophy for metal mining. In the nonmetal-mine group the trophy was again won by a company in New York. A quarry in Michigan won the trophy for the quarry-and-opencut-mine group. The trophy for anthracite mines remains in Pennsylvania, as all anthracite mines in the contest are in that State."

"Since the early days of flotation, process technicians have known that the speed at which the froth is recovered over the lip of the cell has a very direct and consistent influence on the grade and recovery of the circuit. No plant would deny that, even to this day, one of the most important aspects of a process technician’s job is ensuring that the froth is moving at a desired and controlled speed over the lip. Unfortunately, process technicians cannot watch the froth throughout the entire shift, as there are always a lot of other tasks to do.A considerable amount of work has thus been done to develop a “system” that automatically measures the speed of the froth. This measurement would then be used in simple controllers to emulate the steps taken by the process technician in correcting deviations of the froth speed from its desired level. Many of the earlier attempts to measure speed were ineffective, as they were unable to cope with turbulence on the froth surface. The FrothMasterTM instrument makes use of machine vision technologies to measure the speed of the froth over the lip of a cell at a very high sampling rate. This instrument produces an extremely reliable and accurate measurement of the froth speed (as well as other parameters such as bubble size and froth stability). As we will show, the effectiveness of the speed measurement in controlling the performance of the plant is a testimony to its reliability.Three FrothMasterTM units have recently been installed on the Cadia Hills Gold Mine in New South Wales (Australia). The objectives of this installation were:To control the mass-recovery of two Tank Cells in series on the same level where differences in the hydrostatic head between the two cells result in the cells pulling inconsistently with respect to each other.Control of the concentrate grade (%Copper) from the first rougher.Reduction in the frother consumption in the rougher circuit by monitoring the froth speed.A simple controller was designed to react to disturbances in the same way that human operators react. This was done after consultation with the metallurgists and the process technicians at Cadia. The controller had two functions:Stabilisation: The stabilising controller made use of three manipulated variables (level, frother addition rate and aeration rate) to control the froth speed to a setpoint.Optimisation: The optimising controller adjusted the froth speed setpoint based on deviations of the grade (measured in real-time with an OSA) from a setpoint. The plant metallurgist adjusted the grade setpoint based on information about the ore."

The Functional Performance Equation for Ball Milling” was first presented in 1988. It now has been used successfully in more than a dozen mineral processing plants. This powerful, yet simple tool provides a new level of understanding of closed circuit grinding. It shows how grinding circuit efficiency is in reality comprised of two distinct efficiencies. It demonstrates how circuit production rate is related, collectively, to these two efficiencies, mill energy input, and the grindability of the ore. It links circuit performance to design and operating variables that can be manipulated, and creates an effective strategy for making plant improvements. This paper covers the derivation and industrial validation of this equation. As part of an engineering and management system that also incorporates suitable metrics and process control, other operators can now use this tool to make improvements and to manage the performance of their grinding operations with clarity and confidence.

During the operation of the Parkes process of desilverising, and in the earlier days of the continuous process, gold and silver were removed separately from softened lead bullion. Gold was removed in the Parkes process by a selective zincing, and -in the continuous process by treatment with zinc in a special de-golding kettle, in each case a crust being obtained carrying the gold and a small portion of the silver. Actually the process could have been more correctly termed a de-copperising process, on accountof the relatively large amount of this metal present, and its affinity for zinc, which caused it to enter the crusts produced.The crust was treated in reverberatory furnaces, where the bulk of the copper and zinc was removed in by-products, and the resulting "gold bullion" cupelled to give adore bullion containing approximately 2,000 ounces gold per ton.For the purpose of parting this dore, a small Balbach-Thum plant of 11 cells was used, and once each six months a short campaign was conducted on the accumulated metal.With the development of the process of de-copperising smelter bullion by means of sulphur, when a bullion averaging about .004% copper was constantly available for refining, the need for a separate de-golding process disappeared.The de-golding kettle of the Continuous Process...

"Today it is more important than ever to get the maximum possible return on capital invested in the processing industry. To this end the plant is often operated continuously and the choice of equipment is, consequently, extremely important.Screening spans a wide range of particle sizes and there are many different types of screening elements. The following types are common:1. Cloths and elements of rubber.2. Wire mesh screens with round wires.3. Wire mesh screens with profiled wires.4. Perforated steel plates.5. Elements of plastic.6. Gratings of steel beams.7. Gratings of iron rods.We would like to deal with two of these types namely rubber and briefly on plastics.We first introduced rubber screens to the Canadian Mining Industry in November, 1963. This stemmed from a conversation with the superintendant of one of Canada's largest screening plants containing 48 vibrating screens, with an average wire cloth life of 10 to 12 days. We contacted the manufacturer of rubber screen cloths who had supplied rubber screens to a mine in Northern Sweden for a 50,000 ton per day plant in 1951."

MinerSIM is an augmented reality system with integrated hypermedia that is suitable for training underground miners in the basics of using a jackleg drill to install rock bolts. While statistical evidence shows that rock bolting with such a drill has an inherent level of risk, it is conjectured that this can be mediated with adequate safety training outside of the actual mine environment using a variety of educational media including interactive three-dimensional images, games, animations, and videos to describe the mechanics of rock bolting and its principles. Ultimately, trainees will install rock bolts in an immersive environment mixed with real and virtual images generated via a gaming graphics engine. This paper will discuss considerations, implementation issues, and evaluation methodologies of the MinerSIM system.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION The York Durham Sanitary System (YDSS) Interceptor in the Town of Richmond Hill located just north of Toronto, Ontario, Canada will see the construction of a tunnel extending along 19th Avenue for a length of approximately 3.8 Km from Yonge Street, east to Leslie Street and will have a minimum internal diameter of 2.1 m. t to Leslie Street and will have a minimum internal diameter of 2.1 m. The tunnel will connect into four shafts, for which two of the shafts will be constructed using the slurry wall construction method given the high water table and difficult ground conditions encountered at these locations. The two shafts noted as Access Shaft No. 2 and No. 3 were designed and constructed to meet regulatory conditions, which required a sealed shaft construction method. GEOGRAPHICAL PROFILE The ground conditions in the Toronto region consist predominately of glacial till, glaciolacustrine and glaciofluvial sand, silt and clay deposits, and beach sands and gravels. The shallow geological formation found in the project area consists of four types of deposits: Oak Ridge Morain deposits, Halton Till, Glacial lake deposits and Organic soils. The Oak Ridge Morain is the dominant deposit encountered along the tunnel alignment. This formation consists of three deposits: The Upper Till, Middle Sand and the Lower Till. Standard penetration tests (SPT) carried out in these deposits measured N-values ranging from 2 to more than 100 blows/300mm which indicate very loose to very dense soil conditions. The Middle Sand deposit will be the dominant feature within the slurry wall construction at access shafts 2 and 3. Access Shaft 3 The base of the slurry wall will be 20.5 M below the ground surface. Slurry wall excavation will be within peat and organic soils found at the upper 3 M, followed by 5 M of the Upper Till. The remainder of the excavation will be within the Middle Sand. The piezometric head elevation is found at the ground surface. Access Shaft 2 The base of the slurry wall will be 22.5 M below the ground surface. Slurry wall excavation will be entirely within the Middle Sand 2.The piezometric head elevation is found at 7 M below the ground surface.

"The development of stirred milling technology has proven to be an enabling technology in fine grained metallic deposits. The increased grinding efficiency allows for the economic size reduction required to produce saleable concentrates. This improvement has opened the door to retreatment projects such as reprocessing of historic gold mine tailings. Recently a VXP2500 stirred mill was installed at Casmyn Mining Zimbabwe Turk mine to allow the reprocessing of historic mine tailings. After commissioning, an extensive joint research project between Casmyn and FLSmidth Minerals was conducted to optimize the performance of the mill. This paper outlines the challenges encountered in the optimization program and the outcomes from the joint research project.INTRODUCTION The development of stirred mills has opened up many new opportunities to recover valuable minerals from refractory ores. Stirred mills have already been reported as an enabling technology for the processing of fine grained ores in lead/zinc applications (Pease, Young and Curry, 2005). Historically, conventional ball mills were unable to economically grind material fine enough to produce the required recovery or concentrate grade. This often resulted in the loss of valuable materials to the final plant tailings. The advent of stirred milling has now provided an opportunity which has both economic and environmental benefits, the reprocessing of historic mine tailings. Many tailings stockpiles now contain economic concentrations of gold because of the ability of stirred mills to efficiently and economically grind the tailings to liberation sizes. The primary advantage of reprocessing historic tailings is very low cost processing. Recovering the tailings is usually as simple as pumping the material into the reprocessing circuit. The disadvantage of reprocessing tailings is the low feed grade and greater difficulty in recovery valuable minerals at the same size distribution. The material has already been previously processed so fresh surface area or an increase in metal exposure is required. These are both provided by regrinding the tailings material."

An extensive laboratory grinding study was carried out on a magnetite ore in order to assess the grinding behaviour of magnetic concentrate and tail from low intensity magnetic separation (LIMS).The test work involved Bond ball mill testing, rod milling, low intensity magnetic separation (LIMS), and batch ball milling down to product sizes of around P80~25 microns. A total of 18 Bond tests and over 150 batch grinding tests and sieve sizing were carried out. Throughout the grinding tests, power draw was continuously monitored. The relationship between the grinding energy and product size was analysed using the conventional energy-size concepts. It was found that the Rittinger equation fits the experimental data well. However, Bond?s equation does not fit the experimental data well, and therefore a modified Bond equation was developed. Differences in grinding properties between the magnetic and non-magnetic component were analysed and compared to the bulk ore. It was found that grinding properties differ significantly and therefore separate grinding test work may be required for each grinding step in the magnetite ore beneficiation flowsheet.
